  1. You are listening to a message from Southwood Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama.

  2. Our passion is to experience and express grace.

  3. Join us.

  4. I love Christmas.

  5. Singing these songs that we've heard and love, enjoying these beautiful decorations.

  6. Thank you, ladies.

  7. Mostly ladies.

  8. I think there were a couple men who helped.

  9. It's wonderful.

  10. People especially celebrating the life-changing, history-altering entrance of God into this world in human flesh.

  11. That's what we're celebrating, right?

  12. As we often do, I want us to focus for a few weeks in our sermons on Christmas.

  13. And this year we're going to use John chapter 1 as our starting point.

    John 1 chapter mention

  14. Over the next few weeks we're going to leave John 1 and jump into a few other passages from time to time.

  15. But that will be our focus, where we'll be getting our themes.

  16. It's this glorious prologue to John's gospel.

  17. Talking about the glory of Christmas.

  18. We'll read it in a couple of minutes.

  19. But as you'll see here in this really nice graphic that Eli made for us,

  20. the focus, the most Christmas part of these 18 verses is there in the middle.

  21. The Word became flesh.

  22. This shocking statement that John has for us.

  23. One that no Jew or Gentile, no one would have had categories for this.

  24. The Word became flesh.

  25. If that's true, that God became man, that the material, the immaterial actually became material

  26. and walked among us, then it changes everything.

  27. If that happened, that can't be ignored.

  28. Nothing else could possibly be more important than that.

  29. That's why we need to spend some time thinking about the incarnation.

  30. The Word became flesh.

  31. I'll use this as a working description of the incarnation for our time together.

  32. What the essence of Christmas is over the next few weeks.

  33. You know that Christmas means the coming of Christ, right?

  34. That's what the Word means.

  35. So we'll talk about the incarnation as the intentional entrance of the divine Son of God

  36. into our fallen world in human flesh to secure our redemption at the cost of His life

  37. because of His great love.

  38. Nothing fancy or complicated in that, but it is glorious.

  39. We're going to look in the next few weeks at all the aspects of that description,

  40. but right now I especially want to point out the uniqueness of the incarnation.

  41. This is a one-time event in history that we cannot replicate.

  42. The divine Son of God becoming man to accomplish redemption.

  43. And you may say, yeah, well, we know.

  44. That's what it's all about.

  45. I say that in part because part of my heart in this series is that we would understand

  46. and learn for ourselves a few things about how the incarnation impacts our lives.

  47. How it changes the way we live.

  48. The pattern in that the way Jesus relates to people can be for the way we relate to others.

  49. Jesus is sometimes referenced biblically as a pattern for us, an example for us.

  50. Now, that's not the point of John chapter 1.

    John 1 chapter mention

  51. It's simply not there.

  52. But we'll see it in some other passages as we read in the next few weeks.

  53. And I want you to know something as we see that.

  54. I want you to know how important it is that we not see the incarnation primarily as an example

  55. for us to replicate.

  56. First and foremost, it is the unique, unrepeatable event by which we are rescued, not merely redirected.

  57. So we're going to talk in the next few weeks about the sacrifice of the incarnation.

  58. What Jesus gave up.

  59. The pain of the incarnation.

  60. What Jesus endured.

  61. The motivation for the incarnation.

  62. What drove Jesus to become flesh.

  63. And in all of those, we're going to learn important principles for our lives.

  64. How we relate to God and those around us.

  65. How in some ways, as Jesus says in John 17, 18,

  66. as God sent Jesus into the world, so Jesus sends us into the world.

  67. There's connectivity there, right?

  68. There is a pattern going on.

  69. But we're going to end by coming back to the uniqueness of the incarnation.

  70. The one and only Son of God who became man.

  71. You got that?

  72. Am I belaboring this point at this point?

  73. We're going to focus on the incarnation of Jesus.

  74. On Him.

  75. The glory and the uniqueness of Jesus' incarnation.

  76. Celebrate it.

  77. Worship Him for it.

  78. And learn, where appropriate, how He's a pattern for us.

  79. This morning, we'll focus on the need for the incarnation.

  80. The first few verses of John 1.

  81. I'm going to read this whole beautiful prologue this morning.

  82. Why don't we stand together and give our attention to the reading of God's holy word in John 1.

  83. This is the word of God.

  84. In the beginning was the word, and the word was with God, and the word was God.

  85. He was in the beginning with God.

  86. All things were made through Him, and without Him was not anything made that was made.

  87. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.

  88. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

  89. There was a man sent from God whose name was John.

  90. He came as a witness to bear witness about the light that all might believe through Him.

  91. He was not the light, but came to bear witness about the light.

  92. The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world.

  93. He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, yet the world did not know Him.

  94. He came to His own, and His own people did not receive Him.

  95. But to all who did receive Him, who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God,

  96. who were born not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

  97. And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us.

  98. And we have seen His glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.

  99. John bore witness about Him and cried out,

  100. This was He of whom I said,

  101. He who comes after me ranks before me, because He was before me.

  102. And from His fullness, we have all received grace upon grace.

  103. For the law was given through Moses, grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

  104. No one has ever seen God.

  105. The only God, who is at the Father's side,

  106. He has made Him known.

  107. Thus far, God's holy Word.

  108. Father, pray with me.

  109. Father, for Your Word, we give You great thanks.

  110. And we beg this morning that You would teach us,

  111. not just lessons for our heads,

  112. but that You would help us to experience Your truth,

  113. to know it in the depths of our beings,

  114. and to have it transform us that we might be different people,

  115. that we might worship You,

  116. and know You,

  117. and serve You.

  118. To that work, we pray,

  119. by Your Spirit, in Jesus' name.

  120. Amen.

  121. Please be seated.

  122. If you've ever been on a tour deep into a cave,

  123. where they get you in the middle of the tour,

  124. and then turn all the lights out,

  125. and you can't even see your hand in front of your face,

  126. then you know what darkness feels like.

  127. My family took a trip this fall break up to Mammoth Cave, Kentucky,

  128. and went on a tour like that in this huge cave.

  129. And while we were in the dark part of that cave,

  130. at that part of the tour where they turn all the lights out,

  131. the tour guide told us the story of a man who decades ago

  132. had been on a tour like that.

  133. And he forgot his hat early in the tour,

  134. and so he asked if he might be allowed to go back and get his hat.

  135. And they allowed him to, in fact,

  136. gave him a lantern to take with him to go back and find his hat.

  137. And they were going to meet up later.

  138. He found the hat and went back to look for the tour group,

  139. but took a wrong turn and couldn't find them.

  140. He thought perhaps he saw them coming

  141. and thought he would see the light of the tour better

  142. if he blew his lamp out.

  143. So he blew the lamp out,

  144. only to find himself alone in utter darkness,

  145. stuck, no way to turn the light back on.

  146. He sat down, and as the hours passed,

  147. he, as you can imagine, began to get pretty frantic.

  148. He thought he heard footsteps coming nearer to him

  149. and began to call out and to bang rocks together over and over.

  150. And the closer the footsteps got,

  151. the louder he would bang the rocks.

  152. And nobody showed up.

  153. It was late the next day, in fact,

  154. before a rescue team finally found him.

  155. And when they found him,

  156. they said, you know,

  157. how have you been doing?

  158. How's it going?

  159. And he said, well,

  160. people were close so many times.

  161. Were you all in this part of the cave overnight?

  162. They said, no, no one's been near here.

  163. Those footsteps you thought you heard,

  164. do you know what those were?

  165. That was his heart.

  166. That was his own heart beating in the darkness,

  167. in the silence.

  168. It was so confusing,

  169. so disconcerting,

  170. that he didn't even recognize his own heart beating.

  171. He was stuck.

  172. Trying to get out of the cave by himself

  173. would have ended in certain injury or death,

  174. falling into something that he couldn't see.

  175. All he could do was sit

  176. and wait for light to come.

  177. I tell you that story

  178. because it's a good picture

  179. of what darkness feels like and is like.

  180. We've been talking already this morning

  181. of the darkness of our lives

  182. and the light of Christ.

  183. It's the kind of darkness

  184. that John describes Jesus bringing light into.

  185. Jesus' incarnation is necessary.

  186. It's so needed

  187. because of the darkness of this world.

  188. That can't see my hand in front of my face

  189. kind of darkness.

  190. Can't take a single confident step

  191. in the right direction.

  192. Darkness.

  193. Desperate for light.

  194. Look at verse 4.

  195. In him was life

  196. and the life was the light of men.

  197. The light shines in the darkness

  198. and the darkness has not overcome it.

  199. There's in these verses

  200. a connection of light and life.

  201. And so what we see is that

  202. darkness is quite the opposite.

  203. There's death associated with darkness.

  204. The absence of life.

  205. The Word, the light, is with God.

  206. Connected to Him in relationship closely.

  207. But the darkness is not.

  208. You can feel the distance

  209. from the light of life.

  210. No connection to God whatsoever.

  211. The world into which Jesus entered

  212. was marked by the violence

  213. and debauchery and idolatry of Rome.

  214. Having nothing to do with Yahweh,

  215. the God of Israel.

  216. In fact, it's very similar

  217. to the darkness of Babylon.

  218. In that famous prophecy from Isaiah 9,

  219. we've read a couple of times already

  220. this morning,

  221. verse 2,

  222. the people who walked in darkness

  223. there in exile in Babylon,

  224. those people have seen a great light.

  225. Those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness,

  226. darkness on them has light shone.

  227. The darkness of exile in Babylon

  228. featured a nation in control

  229. who was totally opposed to Yahweh

  230. and everything that He stood for.

  231. Notice as well that feeling of distance from God

  232. was not just true for that nation,

  233. not just true for the Romans

  234. and the Babylonians.

  235. It was true as a feeling

  236. for the people of God

  237. in Babylon

  238. and in John chapter 1, right?

    John 1 chapter mention

  239. They were feeling that distance from God.

  240. In Babylon,

  241. away from the promised land,

  242. feeling neglected,

  243. not knowing where to go

  244. or what to do.

  245. By the time of the incarnation,

  246. John chapter 1,

    John 1 chapter mention

  247. God's people have been hearing what?

  248. Silence from God

  249. for hundreds of years,

  250. generations,

  251. not knowing if He's still there,

  252. if He can still be trusted.

  253. Darkness for God's people too.

  254. Of course, darkness in the Bible

  255. involves this element of moral confusion as well.

  256. It's not just being separated from God,

  257. but the people in power in Rome

  258. and in Babylon,

  259. they seem to do whatever they want.

  260. They live however they please.

  261. Maybe it's okay.

  262. Where does obeying the commands of God

  263. get one anyway?

  264. Apparently not very far,

  265. they might be thinking.

  266. Perhaps right and wrong is,

  267. you know,

  268. it's more difficult to define

  269. than we thought.

  270. It's really quite confusing.

  271. There's a word in verse 5,

  272. the light shines in the darkness,

  273. but the darkness has not overcome it.

  274. Overcome.

  275. That word there means

  276. to grasp or seize something.

  277. Sometimes physically.

  278. So like it's translated here,

  279. it would mean the darkness

  280. has not overcome

  281. or defeated the light.

  282. Sometimes it means

  283. hasn't been grasped

  284. or seized mentally.

  285. Hasn't been understood.

  286. The thought hasn't been mastered.

  287. It rejects it offhand

  288. as later in chapter 1

  289. we're going to see

  290. the darkness just rejects

  291. the light.

  292. Just utter confusion

  293. about what truth

  294. would even be.

  295. Sometimes that's because

  296. of willful blindness.

  297. Like what Jesus describes

  298. in John chapter 3.

    John 3 chapter mention

  299. This is the judgment.

  300. The light has come into the world

  301. and people loved the darkness

  302. rather than the light

  303. because their works

  304. were evil.

  305. Why did they prefer

  306. the darkness to the light?

  307. Everyone who does wicked things

  308. hates the light

  309. and does not come to the light

  310. lest his works

  311. should be exposed.

  312. Because of our willful choice

  313. of these evil deeds,

  314. I don't want the light

  315. to expose the darkness.

  316. darkness.

  317. You're in that cave

  318. and the right way out

  319. is not just a 50-50 guess

  320. this way or that way.

  321. It's one of a million passageways

  322. will get you out

  323. but most of them

  324. you'll fall

  325. to your great injury

  326. or death.

  327. You can't see which step

  328. has clear footing.

  329. And even if you could,

  330. perhaps you're not sure

  331. you'd want to get out

  332. that way.

  333. You've kind of grown accustomed

  334. to the darkness.

  335. I'd rather stay safe here

  336. than risk moving in that direction.

  337. Moral confusion.

  338. Finally, perhaps the most prominent aspect

  339. of the darkness described here

  340. is its utter helplessness.

  341. If you try to find your own way

  342. to safety in the darkness,

  343. you're only going to hurt yourself.

  344. You can provide no light.

  345. All you can do

  346. is sit there in the dark

  347. with your heart pounding

  348. and wait for light,

  349. for help to come to you.

  350. It's like Paul telling us

  351. we're spiritually dead,

  352. completely unable

  353. to move toward light,

  354. hopelessly stuck, right?

  355. We've got to feel

  356. the weight of this darkness

  357. in the world

  358. before the incarnation.

  359. The darkness into which

  360. Jesus as the light of the world

  361. would come.

  362. There's no help

  363. for those walking in darkness,

  364. for those in a land

  365. of deep darkness.

  366. No one else in the darkness

  367. can help.

  368. Sadly, it's not just

  369. the pagan nations of old

  370. or the people of God

  371. in Babylon or Rome

  372. who have felt darkness

  373. like this, is it?

  374. Relational distance from God.

  375. moral confusion.

  376. Utter helplessness.

  377. Felt any of that lately?

  378. Thought any of those things

  379. recently?

  380. Would you sometimes

  381. describe the darkness

  382. of the world

  383. in which we live

  384. as tangible,

  385. as palpable?

  386. I can feel it

  387. everywhere I look

  388. and everything I do.

  389. You can feel the weight

  390. of it all around you,

  391. can't you?

  392. We've been reminded daily

  393. in recent months

  394. and again this week

  395. that we live in a culture

  396. where we think

  397. we have some special

  398. kind of light,

  399. but celebrities,

  400. those lives that we follow

  401. and idolize

  402. and watch closely,

  403. sports or entertainment figures,

  404. they're openly acknowledged

  405. to be distant from God

  406. and regularly found

  407. to be empty

  408. and debased.

  409. A culture where

  410. moral confusion

  411. is so epidemic

  412. that even the most

  413. basic issues

  414. of right and wrong

  415. can hardly be established.

  416. We can't agree

  417. on almost anything.

  418. A culture where

  419. elected leaders,

  420. far from helping us

  421. sort through

  422. our deep confusion

  423. and see virtue

  424. and the right path

  425. more clearly,

  426. are the exemplars

  427. in many cases

  428. of this present darkness

  429. displaying

  430. and at times

  431. even defending

  432. their own corruption.

  433. What makes it hard

  434. for us to feel this

  435. the way Israel

  436. would have in Isaiah

  437. or the Jews

  438. in John 1

  439. is that we now

  440. within the church

  441. of Jesus Christ

  442. are shielded

  443. from all of that.

  444. The darkness

  445. never comes in here.

  446. We're immune

  447. from those struggles.

  448. Right?

  449. Who are we kidding?

  450. We certainly feel

  451. oppressive darkness

  452. around us,

  453. but usually,

  454. if we're honest,

  455. we also feel it

  456. inside of us.

  457. Don't we?

  458. In some ways,

  459. we've been called

  460. to be a light

  461. in a dark world,

  462. shining the light

  463. of God before men.

  464. But we too,

  465. even in the church,

  466. have neglected

  467. God's Word so much

  468. that He does feel distant.

  469. And the path of righteousness

  470. does seem unclear.

  471. We too fail to love

  472. each other faithfully.

  473. Even the ones closest to us

  474. whom we have

  475. particularly promised

  476. to love,

  477. we fail to love.

  478. We too experience leaders

  479. preying on the vulnerable

  480. and demonstrating

  481. their own idolatry

  482. and moral confusion.

  483. And so,

  484. because of these things,

  485. we ourselves

  486. often approve

  487. of the darkness.

  488. Why?

  489. Why?

  490. Just like in John 3,

  491. we approve of the darkness

  492. so that our own evil

  493. is not exposed.

  494. So we don't have to deal

  495. with the ugly reality

  496. we see in our own hearts

  497. and in our own relationships.

  498. Or we're at times

  499. guilty of avoiding darkness,

  500. hiding our light,

  501. rather than putting the lamp

  502. on a stand

  503. where Jesus has called us to.

  504. We keep to ourselves

  505. thinking,

  506. aha,

  507. we will avoid darkness

  508. altogether.

  509. We'll just stay in here.

  510. The completely nonsensical

  511. opposite

  512. of what our Savior

  513. has done Himself

  514. and called us

  515. to do.

  516. But some days,

  517. you look around

  518. and the darkness

  519. just feels

  520. too strong,

  521. doesn't it?

  522. Feels ever-present

  523. around us,

  524. too.

  525. Are you starting

  526. to feel a little bit

  527. of why we need

  528. the good news

  529. of Christmas,

  530. of the incarnation?

  531. Why we need God

  532. to break in

  533. with light

  534. to our darkness?

  535. Back in the 11th century,

  536. a theologian

  537. named Anselm

  538. asked that very question,

  539. why did God

  540. have to become

  541. a man?

  542. In Latin,

  543. he said,

  544. cur Deus homo.

  545. Why the God-man?

  546. And he gave us

  547. a great start

  548. on the answer

  549. to that question.

  550. Now,

  551. Anselm understood

  552. this dynamic

  553. that even though

  554. men ought

  555. to be the one

  556. to make the payment

  557. to satisfy

  558. divine justice

  559. because men

  560. were the debtors,

  561. the ones who

  562. owed that debt,

  563. even though men

  564. ought to pay it,

  565. only God

  566. was capable

  567. of paying

  568. the infinite debt,

  569. of satisfying

  570. the perfect standard,

  571. and so God

  572. had to become

  573. man.

  574. That's why

  575. God had to

  576. become man.

  577. In my words,

  578. human flesh

  579. must be

  580. divinely

  581. perfect.

  582. That's what

  583. had to happen.

  584. God created

  585. humanity

  586. to live in this

  587. perfect relationship

  588. with Him

  589. where we trusted

  590. Him

  591. and obeyed Him

  592. and reflected

  593. His image.

  594. He commanded

  595. us to be

  596. what?

  597. Holy.

  598. Just a little

  599. bit holy?

  600. No,

  601. as holy

  602. as He

  603. is

  604. holy.

  605. Human

  606. flesh,

  607. divinely

  608. perfect.

  609. That's what

  610. was necessary.

  611. But then in our

  612. rebellion,

  613. we found ourselves

  614. in the darkness.

  615. Distant from

  616. this close

  617. relationship

  618. with God

  619. we were

  620. created for.

  621. Contradicting

  622. His commands.

  623. Without hope

  624. and without

  625. God in the

  626. world.

  627. Ephesians

    Ephesians 2 chapter mention

  628. chapter 2.

  629. The darkness

  630. of this world

  631. leaves everyone

  632. alone

  633. and hopeless

  634. and helpless

  635. stuck,

  636. right?

  637. Unless,

  638. unless light

  639. comes

  640. and finds

  641. us.

  642. Unless

  643. light

  644. moves into

  645. our darkness

  646. and shines

  647. there.

  648. and so

  649. the Word

  650. had to

  651. become

  652. flesh.

  653. The light

  654. had to

  655. come

  656. shine

  657. in the

  658. darkness.

  659. God

  660. Himself

  661. had to

  662. come

  663. find

  664. us.

  665. Have you

  666. been there

  667. in the dark

  668. cave

  669. on one of

  670. those tours

  671. when the

  672. light comes

  673. on?

  674. Usually it may

  675. even just be

  676. one flashlight

  677. or something.

  678. It doesn't

  679. just light up

  680. a little spot

  681. in the

  682. huge empty

  683. cavern,

  684. does it?

  685. Very quickly

  686. the light

  687. fills the

  688. entire space.

  689. The people

  690. of God

  691. failed over

  692. and over

  693. and over

  694. to be a

  695. light to

  696. the nations.

  697. And so

  698. God promised

  699. to send

  700. one

  701. to bring

  702. them

  703. light.

  704. Even more

  705. than bringing

  706. light just

  707. to God's

  708. people,

  709. that one

  710. was going

  711. to be

  712. a light

  713. that would

  714. light up

  715. and bring

  716. light to

  717. the nations.

  718. Isaiah 49

    Isaiah 49:6

  719. verse 6.

  720. Not just

  721. for the

  722. tribes of

  723. Jacob and

  724. the preserved

  725. of Israel,

  726. but a

  727. light for

  728. the nations

  729. was this

  730. one who

  731. was coming

  732. to fill

  733. the entire

  734. world

  735. with light.

  736. This is

  737. what Jesus

  738. offers to

  739. all of

  740. us.

  741. The

  742. light

  743. of

  744. life.

  745. John

    John 8 chapter mention

  746. chapter 8.

  747. Jesus

  748. says it.

  749. He spoke

  750. to them

  751. and says,

  752. I'm the

  753. light of

  754. the world.

  755. Here's

  756. why I

  757. came.

  758. Whoever

  759. follows

  760. me will

  761. not walk

  762. in darkness,

  763. but will

  764. have the

  765. light of

  766. life.

  767. Later in

  768. John

    John 12 chapter mention

  769. chapter 12,

  770. I have

  771. come into

  772. the world

  773. as light

  774. so that

  775. whoever

  776. believes

  777. in me

  778. may not

  779. remain

  780. in darkness.

  781. That's

  782. why he

  783. came.

  784. God

  785. may seem

  786. very

  787. distant

  788. to you

  789. this morning.

  790. I know

  791. there are

  792. some of

  793. you for

  794. whom

  795. life

  796. seems

  797. purposeless

  798. and

  799. confusing

  800. and you're

  801. thinking

  802. the best

  803. way forward

  804. is to

  805. escape

  806. from it.

  807. Others

  808. of you

  809. have

  810. failed

  811. in such

  812. humiliating

  813. ways that

  814. you just

  815. feel like

  816. there's

  817. no hope

  818. for you

  819. at all.

  820. Some of

  821. you have

  822. been harmed

  823. in such

  824. dark,

  825. devastating

  826. ways that

  827. you think

  828. there's no

  829. way forward.

  830. There's no

  831. hope for

  832. me.

  833. Others

  834. of you

  835. have felt

  836. the emptiness

  837. of success

  838. and you've

  839. gotten there

  840. and it

  841. didn't

  842. fulfill

  843. and you're

  844. feeling

  845. nothing

  846. left

  847. to live

  848. for.

  849. And I've

  850. had the

  851. privilege

  852. of seeing

  853. some of

  854. you in

  855. all of

  856. those

  857. situations

  858. hopeless

  859. and stuck

  860. and with

  861. no way

  862. forward

  863. and to

  864. find

  865. God

  866. show up

  867. to see

  868. Jesus

  869. bring light

  870. and meet

  871. you in

  872. those dark

  873. places

  874. and bring

  875. life

  876. and to

  877. see you

  878. rejoice

  879. in that.

  880. Jesus

  881. says

  882. no matter

  883. how thick

  884. the darkness

  885. you feel

  886. he brings

  887. light

  888. and life

  889. into that

  890. darkness.

  891. That's the

  892. message of

  893. Christmas

  894. that Jesus

  895. has come

  896. to be the

  897. light of the

  898. world that

  899. whoever knows

  900. him will

  901. have the

  902. life of

  903. light in

  904. you.

  905. Will no

  906. longer walk

  907. in darkness

  908. that there is

  909. something on

  910. the other

  911. side of

  912. where you

  913. are right

  914. now that

  915. there is

  916. deliverance

  917. from that

  918. pain and

  919. hopelessness

  920. that you

  921. feel.

  922. Because Jesus

  923. comes as a

  924. man who has

  925. a perfect

  926. relationship

  927. with God.

  928. The word

  929. was with

  930. God.

  931. The word

  932. was God.

  933. And all

  934. through the

  935. life of

  936. Jesus it's

  937. not just

  938. in his

  939. birth we

  940. see him

  941. and we

  942. hear him

  943. talking with

  944. the father

  945. seeking the

  946. glory of

  947. the father

  948. always doing

  949. the will

  950. of his

  951. father.

  952. He loves

  953. and trusts

  954. him as

  955. we were

  956. always

  957. supposed

  958. to.

  959. No

  960. relational

  961. distance.

  962. Absolute

  963. intimacy

  964. and knowledge

  965. and trust.

  966. That's why

  967. Jesus has

  968. life and

  969. light.

  970. And then

  971. he provides

  972. the perfect

  973. righteousness.

  974. He lives

  975. as a man.

  976. Human

  977. flesh being

  978. divinely

  979. perfect.

  980. Keeping all

  981. the father's

  982. commands.

  983. Always

  984. obedient even

  985. in the great

  986. temptations.

  987. Even in

  988. the agonizing

  989. situations.

  990. All the

  991. way to

  992. the cross

  993. obedient.

  994. He has

  995. come to

  996. do the

  997. will of

  998. the father

  999. and to

  1000. finish his

  1001. work.

  1002. John 4

  1003. 34.

  1004. This is

  1005. why we

  1006. need the

  1007. incarnation.

  1008. We needed

  1009. someone to

  1010. come do

  1011. that for

  1012. us.

  1013. The perfect

  1014. obedience.

  1015. The perfect

  1016. relationship

  1017. that we

  1018. were created

  1019. for.

  1020. Except it

  1021. gets even

  1022. better than

  1023. that.

  1024. God

  1025. because Jesus

  1026. doesn't just

  1027. come to

  1028. show the

  1029. way.

  1030. He doesn't

  1031. just walk

  1032. in and say

  1033. here's how

  1034. you can

  1035. do it.

  1036. Here's how

  1037. you can

  1038. relate to

  1039. God.

  1040. Here's what

  1041. obedience

  1042. looks like.

  1043. He doesn't

  1044. merely show

  1045. us how to

  1046. relate to

  1047. God.

  1048. And how to

  1049. obey the

  1050. father so

  1051. that we

  1052. could maybe

  1053. find our

  1054. way to

  1055. light and

  1056. life.

  1057. No.

  1058. He is the

  1059. help that

  1060. we really

  1061. need.

  1062. Because of

  1063. our utter

  1064. helplessness.

  1065. That's why

  1066. there's hope

  1067. for every

  1068. one of us.

  1069. No matter

  1070. how thick

  1071. the darkness

  1072. you feel

  1073. is, there's

  1074. hope because

  1075. of this.

  1076. I want you

  1077. to imagine

  1078. for a minute

  1079. that you're

  1080. that person

  1081. stuck in

  1082. the darkness

  1083. of the cave.

  1084. You're utterly

  1085. helpless.

  1086. Just imagine

  1087. you've fallen

  1088. down to this

  1089. place and

  1090. broken both

  1091. of your

  1092. legs.

  1093. Is it

  1094. any use

  1095. to you for

  1096. someone to

  1097. show up and

  1098. say, hey, I

  1099. know the way

  1100. out.

  1101. If you climb

  1102. up this

  1103. really tall

  1104. rock face

  1105. and get to

  1106. the top of

  1107. it and turn

  1108. left and go

  1109. down that

  1110. passageway

  1111. about 500

  1112. yards and

  1113. then, that's

  1114. no help to

  1115. you at all.

  1116. In fact, it's

  1117. almost just

  1118. heaping a

  1119. heavier burden

  1120. on you,

  1121. taunting you

  1122. that you can't

  1123. do and get

  1124. out the way

  1125. that you've

  1126. been told

  1127. you could.

  1128. Those kinds

  1129. of directions

  1130. are not

  1131. enough.

  1132. Imagine you're

  1133. lying there

  1134. in utter

  1135. darkness,

  1136. stuck on

  1137. the floor

  1138. of the cave

  1139. and all

  1140. of a sudden

  1141. the ceiling

  1142. of the cave

  1143. starts to

  1144. shake and

  1145. pull apart

  1146. and light

  1147. comes crashing

  1148. in and a

  1149. rescue team

  1150. reaches down

  1151. and plucks

  1152. you up and

  1153. pulls you up

  1154. into the

  1155. light.

  1156. light.

  1157. That's the

  1158. vision you

  1159. need to have

  1160. in your head

  1161. of what the

  1162. incarnation is.

  1163. See, Jesus

  1164. has broken

  1165. through heaven

  1166. and earth

  1167. to come into

  1168. your darkness

  1169. and not just

  1170. shine a little

  1171. light in the

  1172. corner, but

  1173. to come flooding

  1174. in with light

  1175. to grab you,

  1176. to rescue you

  1177. and bring you

  1178. into light

  1179. and life.

  1180. Not merely to

  1181. show us where

  1182. rescue can be

  1183. found, but

  1184. truly to

  1185. rescue us,

  1186. to give us

  1187. that perfect

  1188. righteousness,

  1189. to restore

  1190. that perfect

  1191. relationship with

  1192. our Father.

  1193. Did you know

  1194. you could know

  1195. that?

  1196. Did you know

  1197. as you trust

  1198. Christ that's

  1199. the relationship

  1200. that He's

  1201. invited you

  1202. into?

  1203. He's done all

  1204. that we were

  1205. supposed to do

  1206. and He comes

  1207. to restore

  1208. true life

  1209. to those of

  1210. us stuck in

  1211. the death

  1212. of darkness.

  1213. Not to put a

  1214. heavy burden

  1215. on already

  1216. confused and

  1217. helpless people,

  1218. but to give

  1219. you life.

  1220. In fact,

  1221. God breaking

  1222. in to be the

  1223. light in the

  1224. darkness is not

  1225. over yet.

  1226. He rescues

  1227. so thoroughly

  1228. that He brings

  1229. life forever

  1230. as the eternal

  1231. light.

  1232. Isaiah tells us

  1233. what it's going

  1234. to be like.

  1235. Chapter 60,

  1236. darkness shall

  1237. cover the

  1238. earth in

  1239. thick darkness.

  1240. The peoples,

  1241. we know that

  1242. condition,

  1243. but the Lord

  1244. will arise upon

  1245. you and His

  1246. glory will be

  1247. seen upon you

  1248. and nations

  1249. shall come to

  1250. your light and

  1251. kings to the

  1252. brightness of

  1253. your rising.

  1254. Where's the

  1255. light coming

  1256. from?

  1257. The sun shall

  1258. be no more

  1259. your light by

  1260. day, nor for

  1261. brightness shall

  1262. the moon give

  1263. you light, but

  1264. the Lord will

  1265. be your everlasting

  1266. light and your

  1267. God will be your

  1268. glory.

  1269. Your sun shall

  1270. no more go

  1271. down, nor your

  1272. moon withdraw

  1273. itself, for the

  1274. Lord will be your

  1275. everlasting light

  1276. and your days of

  1277. mourning shall be

  1278. ended.

  1279. There's hope.

  1280. Those dark days

  1281. are over.

  1282. John actually

  1283. sees a picture of

  1284. it in Revelation.

  1285. Here's what it's

  1286. going to be like.

  1287. The city has no

  1288. need of sun or

  1289. moon to shine on

  1290. it, for the glory

  1291. of God gives it

  1292. light and its

  1293. lamp is the

  1294. Lamb.

  1295. By its light will

  1296. the nations walk.

  1297. The kings of the

  1298. earth will bring

  1299. their glory into

  1300. it.

  1301. That's how great

  1302. this light is.

  1303. An eternal light

  1304. for the people of

  1305. God and all the

  1306. nations who in the

  1307. midst of their

  1308. darkness cry out

  1309. even today for the

  1310. light of Jesus, the

  1311. light we know only

  1312. he can offer.

  1313. it's for us, yes.

1314. And it's for all the

  1315. nations.

  1316. May Christmas remind

  1317. you of something.

  1318. May you remember

  1319. when you think of

  1320. the incarnation and

  1321. you think of

  1322. Christmas that there

  1323. is a light powerful

  1324. enough and passionate

  1325. enough to break into

  1326. whatever darkness you

  1327. feel no matter how

  1328. thick it is.

  1329. Would you remember

  1330. that there's hope

  1331. because of that?

  1332. That there's life

  1333. on the other side

  1334. of where you are

  1335. because the light

  1336. has come in and

  1337. broken into our

  1338. darkness.

  1339. And would we not

  1340. rest until we have

  1341. shared the good news

  1342. of that light with

  1343. every nation and

  1344. every person who

  1345. needs to know there's

  1346. hope in Jesus.

  1347. Let's pray.

  1348. Jesus, thank you.

  1349. You have broken into

  1350. the darkness for us

  1351. to find us.

  1352. Come now,

  1353. day spring.

  1354. Come and cheer our

  1355. spirits by your

  1356. advent here.

  1357. Disperse the gloomy

  1358. clouds of night and

  1359. death's dark shadows

  1360. put to flight.

  1361. Jesus, we need you

  1362. to come.

  1363. We know what that

  1364. darkness feels like.

1365. Many of us feel it

  1366. weighing us down this

  1367. morning and we beg

  1368. that you would come

  1369. and we rejoice that

  1370. you have come.

1371. Might we glory in the

  1372. light that you have

1373. given us and might you

  1374. come again quickly,

  1375. Lord Jesus, to bring

  1376. us into your eternal

1377. light where you are our

1378. light and you are our

  1379. life forever.

  1380. Thank you.

  1381. Amen.

  1382. Amen.
