  1. During this Christmas season, we have been working our way through the prologue to John's

  2. Gospel, talking together about some different aspects of the Incarnation.

  3. In particular, in the last couple of weeks, we have been considering how Jesus leaves the glories

  4. and the comforts of heaven and enters into our pain.

  5. We've said that when the Word becomes flesh, He sacrifices the status and privilege of divinity

  6. and He runs toward the pain and suffering of this world.

  7. And that's glorious.

  8. It's awe-inspiring to consider what God has done when the Word becomes flesh.

  9. But it also begs the question, why?

  10. Why?

  11. What could possibly motivate God to leave those glories and comforts in order to enter into

  12. pain and suffering?

  13. What could drive Him to do that?

  14. This morning, we get to the climax of John's prologue and we'll get to see a glimpse of

  15. the heart of God in becoming man.

  16. Hear God's Word from John chapter 1, starting at verse 1.

    John 1 chapter mention

  17. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

  18. He was in the beginning with God.

  19. All things were made through Him, and without Him was not anything made that was made.

  20. In Him was life, and that life was the light of men.

  21. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

  22. There was a man sent from God whose name was John.

  23. He came as a witness to bear witness about the light that all might believe through Him.

  24. He was not the light, but came to bear witness about the light.

  25. The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world.

  26. He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, yet the world did not know Him.

  27. He came to His own, and His own people did not receive Him.

  28. But to all who did receive Him, who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children

  29. of God, who were born not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man,

  30. but of God.

  31. And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen His glory, glory as of the only

  32. Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.

  33. If you turn over just a couple chapters to chapter 3 at verse 16, we hear these familiar words.

  34. For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should

  35. not perish, but have eternal life.

  36. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the

  37. world might be saved through Him.

  38. This is God's holy word.

  39. Let's pray and ask Him to teach us together.

  40. Father, we give You thanks for Your word.

  41. We thank You for Your love for us and how it is displayed beautifully there.

  42. Father, Father, would You give us Your heart.

  43. By Your Spirit, teach us and change us this morning, that we might know more of Your heart

  44. this Christmas.

  45. Pray in Jesus' name.

  46. Amen.

  47. When we ask the question of what motivated God to become man, to send His Son as the Word

  48. become flesh, the answer is profound, but it's not complicated.

  49. It's love.

  50. That's it.

  51. I'm not even going to leave you in suspense.

  52. The sermon's kind of over at this point.

  53. It's love.

  54. That's all there is to it.

  55. Love.

  56. If we look at the definition of the incarnation that we've been considering, you'll see it's

  57. in there.

  58. The incarnation is the intentional entrance of the divine Son of God into our fallen world

  59. in human flesh to secure our redemption at the cost of His life.

  60. Why?

  61. Because of His great love.

  62. It's because of His great love that He would do that.

  63. Love.

  64. It's certainly there in John 3.16, those words you're familiar with, but that word love is

  65. not even in the verses we're considering in John 1.

  66. Rather, what we'll see in John 1 this morning is God demonstrating to us how much He loves.

  67. When I was a freshman at Clemson, several upperclassmen reached out to me very early on.

  68. They welcomed me in.

  69. They made me feel part of a community and like I had a home during that very difficult transition

  70. that we all go through and leaving home and living away from home for the first time.

  71. They made me feel a part of a community, especially in RUF, the campus ministry that I was involved

  72. in there at Clemson.

  73. And so that next year, when I was a sophomore, I was on the ministry team with RUF and before

  74. the year started, I went to our campus minister and said, that's what I want to do.

  75. I want to be focused on those new freshman guys.

  76. I want to make them feel loved.

  77. And so I asked him, I said, what would you do?

  78. How do you make them feel loved?

  79. And his answer was not exactly what I was expecting.

  80. I was looking forward to hearing like strategies and events to do and things to say and things

  81. not to say.

  82. And he gave a fairly simple answer, but it's stuck with me for many years.

  83. He said, well, if you want them to feel loved, I would say the easiest way is to start by

  84. actually loving them and then just kind of see where that takes you.

  85. But it's actually best if you really love them.

  86. And I thought, wow, that's crazy.

  87. You mean it's actually easier to love them than to pretend that I love them and try to make

  88. them feel like I love them to actually begin caring about them.

  89. And that step one is genuinely loving is true because love is a feeling and a commitment

  90. that drives actions, isn't it?

  91. Actually loving them was easier than pretending to.

  92. When you actually love, it will be demonstrated and usually then felt as well.

  93. In John 3.16, we see that God so loved the world that he gave.

  94. There's really no other or better explanation for the incarnation, for the seemingly inexplicable

  95. decision that Jesus made to sacrifice for us than love.

  96. Love fuels God's heart.

  97. It overflows from God's heart because, as the Bible tells us, God is love.

  98. 1 John 4.8.

  99. From cover to cover of the Bible, it's a story of a God who loves.

  100. Loves enough to have relationship with the people he created.

  101. Loves powerfully enough to deliver them out of Egypt and slavery.

  102. Loves patiently enough to bear with their sin, their idolatry, their rebellion against him.

  103. Loves persistently enough to bring them back from exile and bring them to the promised land

  104. again.

  105. The love of God is a love that reaches down to care about and to tangibly help those who

  106. are in need.

  107. As Sally Lloyd-Jones says, God's love is a never-stopping, never-giving-up, unbreaking,

  108. always-and-forever love.

  109. It's an irrevocable commitment to relationship with his people, to their ultimate good, no

  110. matter what it takes.

  111. And sometimes it takes a lot, a lot of sacrifice, as it does in the incarnation.

  112. And so in John 1, we are shown, in essence, how much God loves.

  113. In the incarnation, God demonstrates the reality and the enormity of the love in his heart as

  114. he takes on flesh.

  115. Kids, if you were to think at Christmastime, what is one way that our parents show us that

  116. they love us, what would you think of?

  117. How do your parents at Christmastime show you that they love you?

  118. You got any idea?

  119. Presents.

  120. That is one way, isn't it?

  121. They give gifts.

  122. Giving gifts is one way to show love.

  123. And God gives us gifts.

  124. The gift of God, Romans 6.23 says, is eternal life.

  125. That true and everlasting life referenced in John 1 and in John 3.16.

  126. A gift that really can't be matched.

  127. The best gift you could possibly ever receive.

  128. The good news of Christmas is that Jesus didn't come to give merely a little social improvement,

  129. a few family values, temporary political deliverance.

  130. No, he came to give eternal life, which in the meantime can and does transform all of life.

  131. But he came primarily to meet our greatest need, life in the face of death, which is what

  132. we deserved.

  133. God so loved the world that he gave.

  134. But he didn't just send a gift in the mail.

  135. That would have been loving, certainly.

  136. But he didn't just send a gift in the mail.

  137. That gift of eternal life is given in Christ Jesus our Lord.

  138. 1 John 4 says, the way God shows that he is love is by giving himself.

  139. He loves us so much more that he would even give himself.

  140. Look at verse 9 of 1 John 4.

  141. In this, the love of God was made manifest among us that God sent his only son into the

  142. world so that we might live through him.

  143. So that we could have life.

  144. God himself came.

  145. He gives himself in the incarnation.

  146. That's another way at Christmas that many of us will show love or will receive love.

  147. By showing up.

  148. Right?

  149. Don't you love when people don't only send gifts, but some of you are here this morning

  150. because you have shown up face to face in the lives of those you love.

  151. You've perhaps come a long way.

  152. And don't we appreciate and receive that love all the more when we know how much it's

  153. cost them to get there?

  154. All they've had to sacrifice to be there with us because they love us.

  155. In Jesus, God shows up to be Emmanuel.

  156. God with us.

  157. We've considered it over the last few weeks as light breaking into our darkness.

  158. As God running toward our pain.

  159. John says it this way in verse 14 of chapter 1.

  160. And the word became flesh and dwelt among us.

  161. You may know that word for dwelt, dwelt among us, is the word that in the Old Testament was

  162. for tabernacle.

  163. God's mobile home, the place he lived among his people, even while they wandered through

  164. the desert and failed to trust him and obey him.

  165. Here God lived in the tabernacle.

  166. And so this verse is telling us that the word became flesh and tabernacled among us.

  167. He shows up to demonstrate his love in person.

  168. Not merely driving across the country to be with someone he loves, but reaching across

  169. space and time, moving heaven and earth so that he can be with us.

  170. So God didn't just give a gift, but he actually gave himself.

  171. And one final demonstration, he doesn't just show up himself temporarily, but permanently.

  172. This is not the obligatory 24-hour drop-in because it's the holidays and I don't want to get

  173. in trouble with mom and dad.

  174. No, the incarnation establishes, confirms our permanent relationship with God.

  175. Verse 12 of John 1.

  176. To all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children

  177. of God who were born not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man,

  178. but of God.

  179. God gives not just life, not just eternal life, but he gave the right to live that life

  180. as his children in relationship with him, with him as our father.

  181. Born into God's family, given the right to be his child because we wanted it so badly and we worked so hard?

  182. No.

  183. By the will of God, it was his idea to have you in his family.

  184. How much does God love you?

  185. God demonstrates his love by not merely forgiving our deadly sins and giving us life,

  186. by not merely entering into our world and our lives here and there from time to time

  187. to help us out in tight spots,

  188. but particularly by once and for all adopting us into his family forever.

  189. You know that I love the image of the judge who says our penalty is paid in full by Jesus

  190. and we are declared not guilty but righteous before him.

  191. And that same judge in criminal court jumping out from behind his desk,

  192. grabbing you by the hand, running all the way down the hall to family court

  193. and adopting you as his child, becoming your father.

  194. Behold what manner of love the father has for us that we should be called children of God

  195. and that is what we are, 1 John 3.

  196. How much must the heart of God be full of love towards you

  197. that he would adopt you into his family?

  198. How committed is he to this relationship with you?

  199. How certain is he that he never wants to be separated from you?

  200. To those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God,

  201. born by his choice.

  202. Behold what manner of love the father has given to us.

  203. Now God's word has been challenging us and I've been pushing us a bit in the last few weeks

  204. to consider how the incarnation challenges us

  205. and how God sends us into the lives of others.

  206. The darkness of the world, the suffering of those around us every day.

  207. But today I have to admit and we have to remember that there's no way

  208. we will sacrifice our comfort and our riches and our peace

  209. to run toward pain unless we actually love.

  210. You can't pretend that.

  211. It's no surprise to you that God calls us to love others.

  212. Right after that great definition of love in 1 John 4,

  213. John says this,

  214. this is how God loves.

  215. He's loved.

  216. He's loved us and sent his son.

  217. Beloved, if God so loved us,

  218. we also ought to love one another.

  219. We are to love each other.

  220. Our brothers and sisters in Christ,

  221. elsewhere our neighbors,

  222. and even our enemies,

  223. we're called to love.

  224. We are called to give sacrificially,

  225. to show up in the pain,

  226. to give of ourselves,

  227. and consistently to be there for a relationship

  228. that is outlasted only by the eternal relationship

  229. they can know with their God.

  230. We are called to love how?

  231. Like God.

  232. We are called to love as we have been loved,

  233. as he has loved us.

  234. Y'all, we better pray for God's heart

  235. to love like God,

  236. because we don't love like that naturally.

  237. We ought to pray that we would actually,

  238. truly love,

  239. because there are a lot of people

  240. hard to love in our lives.

  241. Not just the ones we've talked about this morning,

  242. like college freshmen,

  243. family members at Christmas.

  244. Don't raise your hand

  245. if you've got hard people to love

  246. sitting on the pew next to you this morning.

  247. Just think it

  248. and anticipate the next 24 hours together.

  249. You can make it.

  250. There are a lot of people

  251. who are hard to love

  252. that God is sending us

  253. to show his love to.

  254. But that's exactly what his love is like.

  255. God's love is for the unlovely.

  256. You know, that's what John 3.16 actually says

  257. when it says,

  258. God so loved the world.

  259. Remember last week,

  260. what we learned about the world?

  261. It's a world in rebellion against him.

  262. Who doesn't love him.

  263. Who ignores him.

  264. Who won't receive him.

  265. And God so loved that world

  266. that he sent his son into it.

  267. He showed us his love

  268. while we were yet sinners

  269. and enemies of his

  270. by being born in a manger,

  271. living perfectly,

  272. and then showing his love

  273. to its fullest extent

  274. by dying on the cross

  275. in our place.

  276. God's love is for those

  277. who are against him.

  278. It's love for the unlovely

  279. that makes them lovely

  280. because he loves them

  281. rather than the other way around.

  282. So if you feel unlovely this morning,

  283. if you think your failures

  284. and your shame

  285. have made you hard to love,

  286. perhaps have even put you

  287. beyond the reach of God's love,

  288. you need to know

  289. that's not the case at all.

  290. God's love is drawn to

  291. and reaches toward

  292. the most unlovely.

  293. God, give us that love.

  294. Love for the unlovely.

  295. Love that is both deeply felt

  296. and tangibly demonstrated.

  297. Robert Benson

  298. is the original author

  299. of a Christmas story

  300. that many have adapted

  301. and I'm going to do that

  302. as well this morning.

  303. It's the story

  304. of a homeless boy

  305. in Chicago

  306. on Christmas Eve.

  307. I'll read.

  308. It was a cold, dark night.

  309. A blizzard was coming.

  310. A little homeless boy

  311. was selling newspapers

  312. on the corner.

  313. He finally walked up

  314. to a policeman and said,

  315. Mister, do you know

  316. where a poor boy

  317. could find a warm place

  318. to sleep tonight?

  319. I sleep in a box

  320. in the alley

  321. and it is very cold.

  322. It's the night

  323. before Christmas.

  324. I sure wish

  325. I had a nice, warm place

  326. to stay.

  327. The policeman told

  328. the little boy

  329. to go down the street

  330. to the big white house

  331. and knock on the door.

  332. When a lady comes

  333. to the door,

  334. you just say,

  335. John 3.16

  336. and she will let you

  337. in the house.

  338. The shivering little boy

  339. ran to the house.

  340. He walked up the steps

  341. and knocked on the door

  342. and a lady came to the door.

  343. He looked up and said,

  344. John 3.16.

  345. The lady said,

  346. Come in, my son.

  347. She took him inside

  348. the warm house

  349. and gave him a seat

  350. in front of the fireplace.

  351. The little boy

  352. sat near the fireplace

  353. and thought,

  354. John 3.16,

  355. I don't know what it means,

  356. but it sure makes

  357. a cold boy warm.

  358. Later she asked him,

  359. Are you hungry?

  360. And he said,

  361. Well, just a little.

  362. I have not eaten

  363. in a couple of days.

  364. She sat the boy down

  365. at the kitchen table

  366. full of food.

  367. He ate and ate

  368. until he was full.

  369. As he was eating,

  370. he thought,

  371. John 3.16.

  372. I don't know what it means,

  373. but it sure makes

  374. a hungry boy full.

  375. She took him upstairs

  376. to a huge bathtub

  377. filled with warm water.

  378. She told him to take

  379. a warm bath

  380. and put on warm pajamas.

  381. And as he soaked

  382. in the tub,

  383. he thought,

  384. John 3.16,

  385. I don't know what it means,

  386. but it sure makes

  387. a dirty boy clean.

  388. Then she tucked him in bed

  389. and kissed him

  390. on the forehead.

  391. The boy lay there

  392. and thought,

  393. John 3.16,

  394. I don't know what it means,

  395. but it sure makes

  396. a tired boy rested.

  397. The next morning

  398. was Christmas Day

  399. and the woman gave

  400. the boy a big wrapped present.

  401. He quickly pulled off

  402. the ribbons

  403. and opened it

  404. and he was surprised

  405. to find new clothes

  406. and a Bible.

  407. He happily thought again,

  408. John 3.16,

  409. I don't know what it means,

  410. but it sure makes

  411. a poor boy happy.

  412. And the lady took his Bible

  413. and sat down near him

  414. and asked him,

  415. do you know John 3.16?

  416. And he said,

  417. no ma'am,

  418. I don't.

  419. The first time I heard of it

  420. was when the policeman

  421. told me to use it.

  422. She opened the Bible

  423. to John 3.16

  424. and he read,

  425. for God so loved the world

  426. that he gave his only son

  427. that whoever believes in him

  428. should not perish

  429. but have eternal life.

  430. And she said,

  431. you are always welcome

  432. in this house

  433. and I would love for you

  434. to be a part of my family

  435. but even more importantly,

  436. you are loved by God

  437. and can be a part of his family

  438. forever.

  439. Now he understood

  440. what Christmas really was about.

  441. He held his new Bible

  442. as he sat in front of the warm fire

  443. and thought,

  444. John 3.16,

  445. now I know a little

  446. what it means

  447. and it sure makes

  448. a cold boy feel warm inside.

  449. It sure makes

  450. a lonely boy

  451. feel loved.

  452. What a beautiful story

  453. of love

  454. for the unlovely

  455. demonstrated

  456. in word

  457. and in deed

  458. for God

  459. so loved the world

  460. that he gave,

  461. that he gave

  462. his only son

  463. that whoever believes

  464. in him

  465. might not perish

  466. but have

  467. eternal life.

  468. When God wanted

  469. to show us

  470. his love,

  471. he gave.

  472. He gave himself.

  473. He gave himself

  474. forever

  475. to us

  476. as our father

  477. so that we,

  478. though we be

  479. completely unworthy

  480. and unlovely,

  481. would be his children

  482. who know

  483. and revel in

  484. and delight

  485. to share freely

  486. his immeasurable love.

  487. Let's pray.

  488. God,

  489. we worship you

  490. for your

  491. heart

  492. of love.

  493. we plead

  494. with you

  495. that you

  496. would give us

  497. your heart

  498. that we might

  499. truly love

  500. in the way

  501. that we have

  502. been loved.

  503. Father,

  504. would those of us

  505. who haven't

  506. experienced that

  507. love for ourselves

  508. this Christmas

  509. see a glimpse

  510. of it

  511. in a baby

  512. in a manger

  513. in a God

  514. who would become

  515. flesh

  516. for us

  517. because of

  518. his great love

  519. for us.

  520. Do that work

  521. in our hearts.

  522. We ask

  523. for Jesus' sake

  524. and for the sake

  525. of those

  526. he would send us

  527. to with his love.

  528. Amen.
