  1. You are listening to a message from Southwood Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama.

  2. Our passion is to experience and express grace. Join us.

  3. Open your Bibles, if you will, to Luke 13.

  4. I'm going to be reading Luke 13, beginning of verse 10, down through verse 17.

  5. Luke 13, beginning of verse 10.

  6. Now, he was teaching in one of the synagogues on the Sabbath,

  7. and there was a woman who had had a disabling spirit for 18 years.

  8. She was bent over and could not fully straighten herself.

  9. And when Jesus saw her, he called her over and said to her,

  10. Woman, you are freed from your disability.

  11. And he laid his hands on her, and immediately she was made straight,

  12. and she glorified God.

  13. But the ruler of the synagogue, indignant because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath,

  14. said to the people,

  15. There are six days in which work ought to be done.

  16. Come on those days and be healed, and not on the Sabbath day.

  17. Then the Lord answered him,

  18. You hypocrites.

  19. Does not each of you, on the Sabbath,

  20. untie his ox or his donkey from the manger and lead it away to water it?

  21. And not this woman, a daughter of Abraham,

  22. whom Satan bound for 18 years?

  23. He loosed from this bond on the Sabbath day?

  24. And he said these things.

  25. As he said these things, all his adversaries were put to shame.

  26. And all the people rejoiced at all the glorious things that were done by him.

  27. Let's pray together that the Father would give us understanding of his word.

  28. Father, we thank you for your word.

  29. Your word is a light into the depth of our souls.

  30. Your word pierces down through all of our defenses, all of our justifications.

  31. It pierces down to places that we don't even know are there.

  32. And that's what we need.

  33. But your word also shines upon and shows the light of your glory and the wonder of your grace.

  34. And as we see ourselves, we also desperately need to see your grace.

  35. So would you shine the light in both ways that we would see honestly who we are,

  36. but also see the glory of grace

  37. and be drawn more deeply into the knowledge of Jesus

  38. and all that he has done for us.

  39. Give me words from your spirit.

  40. Help me in the weakness of my own words

  41. in such a way that by your spirit,

  42. we will hear you speak to us.

  43. And we pray in Jesus' name.

  44. Amen.

  45. Amen.

  46. And some of y'all saw the gift,

  47. or the title of this sermon,

  48. saw the gift of the Sabbath,

  49. you may have been a little anxious

  50. because there are certain sermons that you can preach

  51. that are automatically guaranteed to inspire guilt.

  52. You know, one of those is on prayer,

  53. one of those is witnessing,

  54. and this is another one.

  55. And I don't think in all my years

  56. that I have heard

  57. a good, balanced, uplifting, encouraging sermon

  58. on the Sabbath,

  59. especially in a church

  60. that emphasizes so strongly God's grace.

  61. You know, I appreciate, you know,

  62. the way that we go through,

  63. we are going through the Gospel of Luke

  64. because probably if the topic was just left up to us,

  65. we would have gone here.

  66. But when you go through the text,

  67. you can't avoid it

  68. because, you know,

  69. in the place of just a few verses,

  70. not only here in Luke 13,

  71. but you get over in a couple weeks,

  72. we're going to be seeing it again in Luke 14,

  73. beginning of verse 1,

  74. and we've already seen it

  75. back earlier in Luke.

  76. You can't avoid this subject.

  77. So, you know,

  78. it seems like there's no single command

  79. that Jesus has had to deal with

  80. and runs into so much trouble

  81. with the Pharisees

  82. than this whole idea of the Sabbath.

  83. And so, you know,

  84. at the heart of Jesus' teaching here,

  85. what he's having to deal with,

  86. with the Pharisees,

  87. again, over and over and over again,

  88. is simply their abuse.

  89. It's not the idea of the Sabbath,

  90. but it's their abuse of the law itself.

  91. And this is one of those places in the law

  92. that they have majored on.

  93. And so Jesus is dealing here

  94. with the Pharisees

  95. and their whole concept of the law.

  96. And in that day,

  97. there were these rabbinical writings.

  98. It was called the Mishnah.

  99. And in that Mishnah,

  100. there were about five volumes.

  101. One whole volume of this

  102. was devoted just to Sabbath keeping.

  103. So in a sense,

  104. what Jesus is dealing with

  105. is not so much their misunderstanding of the law,

  106. but it's the way they were dealing with the traditions

  107. even around the law.

  108. They had turned the Sabbath law

  109. more than almost anything else

  110. into a means

  111. where they could show off,

  112. not just to God,

  113. but to the world,

  114. to the culture and society,

  115. their own goodness,

  116. their own religious zeal,

  117. their righteousness.

  118. And they were quite proud of it.

  119. But at the same time,

  120. and this is where we struggle,

  121. you know,

  122. at the same time,

  123. we,

  124. a lot of us,

  125. wouldn't put ourselves in that camp.

  126. But Jesus is not

  127. throwing out the Sabbath.

  128. Not in any way.

  129. What he's dealing with

  130. is the abuse

  131. of the Sabbath law.

  132. You see,

  133. our struggle

  134. is typically

  135. just in the other direction.

  136. I mean,

  137. we,

  138. we're people of grace.

  139. We're not under the law.

  140. We don't have to keep

  141. all these rules and regulations.

  142. In fact,

  143. there's some people would say,

  144. but you know,

  145. even in the New Testament,

  146. we're not even commanded

  147. to keep the Sabbath anymore.

  148. So it really,

  149. it doesn't even apply.

  150. I mean,

  151. why are we even talking about this?

  152. Well,

  153. I would counter

  154. that the Sabbath

  155. is deeply rooted

  156. in many ways

  157. in the gospel itself.

  158. And

  159. in reality,

  160. as we reject

  161. all the rules

  162. and regulations

  163. of the Sabbath,

  164. we find ourselves

  165. more closely aligned

  166. with the Pharisees

  167. than we would want to know.

  168. So what I want to do

  169. this morning

  170. is

  171. we're going to do

  172. an overview

  173. of this whole

  174. Sabbath principle.

  175. And then next week,

  176. Will is going to come back

  177. and deal with

  178. the specific context

  179. here

  180. of Jesus

  181. healing this woman.

  182. But because it comes up

  183. so often,

  184. we need to take a look

  185. at what the Bible

  186. really says

  187. about the Sabbath.

  188. So what we're going to do

  189. is we're going to do

  190. basically

  191. a quick overview

  192. and a Bible study

  193. of

  194. what is taught

  195. here.

  196. Because a lot of us,

  197. I don't think,

  198. I really don't think

  199. we know.

  200. And then we're going to see

  201. from that

  202. then

  203. what are the

  204. implications

  205. for us.

  206. You know,

  207. for Christians,

  208. you know,

  209. what are we supposed

  210. to do

  211. with the Sabbath?

  212. The Sabbath

  213. is a gift

  214. that we rarely

  215. take advantage of.

  216. So,

  217. let's look at Scripture

  218. and see what it says.

  219. First,

  220. I mean,

  221. we have to begin

  222. all the way back

  223. in Genesis,

  224. particularly in Genesis

    Genesis 2 chapter mention

  225. chapter 2.

  226. In Genesis 2,

    Genesis 2:2

  227. verses 2 and 3,

  228. we read this.

  229. And on the seventh day,

  230. God finished

  231. His work

  232. that He had done

  233. and He rested

  234. on the seventh day

  235. from all His work

  236. that He had done.

  237. So,

  238. God blessed

  239. the seventh day

  240. and made it holy

  241. because on it

  242. God rested

  243. from all His work

  244. that He had done

  245. in creation.

  246. Here,

  247. all the way back

  248. at the very beginning

  249. in the act of creation,

  250. the Sabbath

  251. is instituted.

  252. It is not instituted

  253. in the Ten Commandments.

  254. It is instituted

  255. way before

  256. the Ten Commandments.

  257. And it was a principle

  258. that should have been

  259. governing all of life

  260. in God's creation.

  261. But in these,

  262. in this couple of verses,

  263. there are three things

  264. that God says

  265. that we need to look at

  266. just quickly.

  267. One is that

  268. God celebrates.

  269. You know,

  270. what we did not read

  271. is the end of chapter 1

  272. in creation

  273. where God looked over

  274. all that He had created

  275. and He said,

  276. behold,

  277. it is

  278. very good.

  279. God looked over

  280. His creation,

  281. all that He had made

  282. from the world

  283. and the animals

  284. and the plants

  285. and man Himself

  286. and said,

  287. yeah,

  288. this is good.

  289. God,

  290. and so when He gets

  291. to the seventh day,

  292. He rests.

  293. But part of that rest

  294. is He's looking back

  295. and He's celebrating.

  296. He said,

  297. look,

  298. my glory

  299. in creation.

  300. and that's one

  301. of those points

  302. about that seventh day

  303. that we just miss.

  304. It's a day of celebration

  305. but then He's,

  306. and at the culmination

  307. of that,

  308. then He blesses

  309. that day.

  310. You know,

  311. God is ceasing

  312. His creative work.

  313. He blesses this day.

  314. He is satisfied

  315. with all that He has done

  316. and that satisfaction

  317. then leads Him

  318. to the next thing

  319. which is He rests.

  320. Not because He's tired.

  321. He doesn't cease working

  322. because,

  323. I need a break.

  324. He's resting

  325. because He looks

  326. and He's satisfied.

  327. It's done.

  328. It's good.

  329. You know,

  330. it's like an artist

  331. who would paint

  332. this glorious painting

  333. and they work

  334. and they work

  335. and finally

  336. they stop painting

  337. and they look at the work

  338. and say,

  339. there's nothing more to do.

  340. And so God rests.

  341. He simply ceases

  342. from His work.

  343. And then thirdly,

  344. in that celebration,

  345. in His rest,

  346. He sanctifies it.

  347. He makes it holy.

  348. He sets it apart

  349. from every other day

  350. and establishes this now

  351. as a pattern.

  352. as we have six days

  353. to work,

  354. to do our work

  355. but yet there's this seventh

  356. for celebrating

  357. and being satisfied

  358. with

  359. all that God has done

  360. is creation.

  361. celebration.

  362. And I think,

  363. again,

  364. it's this whole idea

  365. of blessedness

  366. and celebration

  367. is one of those

  368. key ideas

  369. about the Sabbath

  370. that we miss

  371. because we look

  372. at the Sabbath,

  373. we look at,

  374. you know,

  375. whether it's Sunday

  376. or Monday

  377. or Saturday

  378. or whatever,

  379. I'm not dealing

  380. with that part

  381. of the issue.

  382. But we look at it

  383. as a burden.

  384. We look at it

  385. as something,

  386. oh shoot,

  387. I gotta do this,

  388. I can't do this,

  389. I can't do this,

  390. okay.

  391. This is a day

  392. for celebrating.

  393. It's kind of like,

  394. you know,

  395. in a sense,

  396. we never feel burdened

  397. over our birthdays.

  398. Our birthdays

  399. are to be celebrated.

  400. I made it another year.

  401. But here God's celebrating

  402. something so much greater,

  403. all that he's done.

  404. There's another passage

  405. a little bit later,

  406. still back in the Old Testament,

  407. Exodus 16.

  408. I'm not gonna read

  409. this whole passage,

  410. but there's something

  411. that God does here.

  412. And the passage

  413. is particularly focused

  414. on God providing manna

  415. in the wilderness.

  416. But this idea of Sabbath

  417. comes into play.

  418. And what God is doing here

  419. is that he's telling people

  420. how to,

  421. he's feeding them

  422. in the middle

  423. of the wilderness

  424. out of nothing.

  425. And he says,

  426. every morning,

  427. I want you to go out

  428. and you're gonna find

  429. scattered all over the ground,

  430. basically,

  431. it's this heavenly bread,

  432. this manna,

  433. that they are to gather.

  434. But he gives them

  435. very strict rules,

  436. particular rules

  437. on how to do this.

  438. And he specifically

  439. tells them,

  440. he says,

  441. this is a test.

  442. I'm gonna test you.

  443. He says,

  444. you're to go out,

  445. gather enough

  446. for one day.

  447. Don't gather two.

  448. Don't gather enough

  449. for three.

  450. You're not storing it.

  451. You're not packing it away

  452. in Tupperware.

  453. You're gathering enough

  454. just for that day

  455. until you get

  456. to the sixth day.

  457. And on the sixth day,

  458. you gather enough

  459. for two days.

  460. Only on the sixth day.

  461. And there was a reason

  462. why he was doing this.

  463. What he wanted them to do

  464. was to trust him.

  465. He says,

  466. I'm gonna provide for you.

  467. I'm gonna supply

  468. all your needs.

  469. I'm gonna do it

  470. from one day

  471. to the next.

  472. But a day in the week,

  473. that seventh day,

  474. you're gonna rest.

  475. You're not gonna go out

  476. and gather.

  477. You don't have to.

  478. You're gonna stay put.

  479. And I'm gonna provide

  480. for you then as well.

  481. And so he sets apart

  482. the Sabbath

  483. as a different day.

  484. But it's a test.

  485. A test

  486. for them

  487. to demonstrate

  488. that they actually

  489. do trust

  490. in their father's

  491. provision.

  492. That's Exodus 16.

  493. You go on

  494. a little bit farther

  495. in Exodus 31

    Exodus 31:12–17

  496. verses 12 through 17.

  497. And I'm gonna read

  498. just a couple of verses

  499. from that.

  500. He says,

  501. And the Lord said to Moses,

  502. you are to speak

  503. to the people of Israel

  504. and say,

  505. above all

  506. you shall keep

  507. my Sabbath

  508. for this is a sign

  509. between me

  510. and you

  511. throughout your generations

  512. that you may know

  513. that I,

  514. the Lord,

  515. sanctify you.

  516. There's a couple

  517. of statements

  518. in there

  519. that draws

  520. my attention.

  521. One he says,

  522. he says,

  523. above all.

  524. Wow.

  525. That is a pretty

  526. strong statement.

  527. He didn't say that

  528. about adultery.

  529. He didn't say that

  530. about anything else.

  531. He says,

  532. the Sabbath is above all.

  533. which is raising

  534. the importance

  535. and the value

  536. of this

  537. significantly.

  538. And now,

  539. why are they

  540. to keep it?

  541. Well,

  542. here,

  543. in this passage,

  544. the emphasis is

  545. that it's a sign.

  546. It's a sign

  547. of what?

  548. It's a sign

  549. that really

  550. is a sense

  551. that God

  552. is gonna set

  553. them apart

  554. apart

  555. from all

  556. the other

  557. nations

  558. around them.

  559. All these

  560. other nations

  561. that don't know

  562. anything about

  563. keeping the

  564. Sabbath.

  565. But he's going

  566. to,

  567. in a sense,

  568. make Israel

  569. peculiar.

  570. He's gonna

  571. make them

  572. different.

  573. He's gonna

  574. set them apart.

  575. He says,

  576. this is what

  577. you're gonna do.

  578. because I

  579. sanctify you.

  580. I'm the one

  581. setting you

  582. apart

  583. and you

  584. are mine.

  585. It's a sign

  586. of ownership

  587. that these

  588. people

  589. are now,

  590. because of the

  591. way they treat

  592. that seventh

  593. day,

  594. they are going

  595. to distinguish

  596. themselves

  597. as God's

  598. people,

  599. not like

  600. any other

  601. people.

  602. people.

  603. And this

  604. is indeed

  605. a serious

  606. matter.

  607. Now we

  608. get to

  609. probably one

  610. of the places

  611. where most

  612. of us would

  613. start when we

  614. think of

  615. the Sabbath,

  616. and that is

  617. when you look

  618. at the Ten

  619. Commandments,

  620. but particularly

  621. I'm gonna look

  622. at those from

  623. Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 5 chapter mention

  624. chapter 5.

  625. You'll find it

  626. back in

  627. Exodus 20,

  628. a little bit

  629. different,

  630. but specifically

  631. in Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 5:12–15

  632. 5,

  633. verses 12

  634. through 15,

  635. this is what

  636. we see.

  637. Observe the

  638. Sabbath day

  639. to keep it

  640. holy,

  641. as the Lord

  642. your God

  643. commanded you,

  644. you shall

  645. remember that

  646. you were a

  647. slave in the

  648. land of Egypt,

  649. and the Lord

  650. your God

  651. brought you

  652. out from

  653. there with

  654. a mighty

  655. hand and

  656. an outstretched

  657. arm,

  658. therefore the

  659. Lord your God

  660. commanded you

  661. to keep

  662. the Sabbath

  663. day.

  664. Now here,

  665. we have a

  666. different emphasis.

  667. it is a

  668. celebration,

  669. but not so

  670. much about

  671. what God

  672. did in

  673. creation,

  674. it's a

  675. celebration

  676. of what God

  677. does in

  678. redemption.

  679. They are to

  680. set apart

  681. this one

  682. day in

  683. their week

  684. and remember.

  685. They are to

  686. remember we

  687. used to be

  688. slaves.

  689. We used to

  690. be under

  691. the yoke

  692. of Pharaoh.

  693. We used

  694. to be

  695. helpless,

  696. but God

  697. with a

  698. mighty hand

  699. and a

  700. mighty arm

  701. broke the

  702. power of

  703. Egypt and

  704. delivered us

  705. and made

  706. us his

  707. own people.

  708. And so

  709. here, I

  710. mean the

  711. emphasis,

  712. I mean it

  713. is on work

  714. and rest,

  715. but the

  716. reason why

  717. is so

  718. that we

  719. can celebrate

  720. God's

  721. work

  722. at setting

  723. us free,

  724. setting us

  725. free from

  726. our slavery,

  727. setting us

  728. free from

  729. all of that

  730. which would

  731. oppress us

  732. in Christ,

  733. looking ahead

  734. at the

  735. ultimate

  736. redemption

  737. that was

  738. coming.

  739. We rest

  740. on the

  741. Sabbath day,

  742. especially in

  743. light of

  744. redemption,

  745. we rest

  746. on the

  747. Sabbath day

  748. as a way

  749. of saying

  750. our labors,

  751. our work,

  752. the strength

  753. of our hand

  754. does not

  755. give me

  756. freedom,

  757. does not

  758. give me

  759. satisfaction,

  760. does not

  761. supply my

  762. needs,

  763. my rest

  764. comes

  765. in Christ

  766. himself.

  767. And here,

  768. because I

  769. celebrate

  770. redemption,

  771. I can

  772. rest.

  773. But this

  774. is talking

  775. about a

  776. rest that's

  777. deep,

  778. not just

  779. physical.

  780. A rest

  781. that goes

  782. down in

  783. our souls

  784. where I

  785. can rest

  786. from my

  787. striving to

  788. be

  789. good enough.

  790. I can

  791. rest for

  792. my striving

  793. that God

  794. would smile

  795. upon me.

  796. I can

  797. rest.

  798. And I

  799. would venture

  800. to say

  801. that most

  802. of you,

  803. or at

  804. least,

  805. a lot

  806. of you,

  807. are tired.

  808. Maybe

  809. you're tired

  810. because you've

  811. been working

  812. non-stop.

  813. Maybe you're

  814. tired because

  815. you stayed up

  816. last night

  817. until almost

  818. midnight at a

  819. rock concert,

  820. like some

  821. of us.

  822. Maybe you're

  823. tired for

  824. chasing your

  825. kids around

  826. all over the

  827. community,

  828. but I would

  829. say there's

  830. a deeper

  831. tiredness.

  832. We are all

  833. in the business

  834. of self-justifying

  835. because we

  836. want that

  837. smile of

  838. God.

  839. We want

  840. God to

  841. say,

  842. I am

  843. satisfied.

  844. And we

  845. don't get

  846. there.

  847. But we

  848. keep working.

  849. We keep

  850. working because

  851. we're not

  852. sure he's

  853. going to

  854. provide.

  855. We keep

  856. working because

  857. we're not

  858. sure we've

  859. done enough.

  860. We keep

  861. working and

  862. striving to

  863. earn that

  864. place that

  865. Christ has

  866. already

  867. finished.

  868. finished.

  869. And so we

  870. celebrate the

  871. redemption and

  872. the rest that

  873. Christ gives

  874. us.

  875. And I think

  876. this is where,

  877. if you go back

  878. and look at the

  879. Pharisees and

  880. their struggle,

  881. this is where the

  882. Pharisees missed it

  883. the most.

  884. Because the whole

  885. reason why they're

  886. keeping all these

  887. rules and all of

  888. these laws is that

  889. they're working

  890. hard,

  891. endlessly working,

  892. to keep their

  893. good standing

  894. before God.

  895. And in their

  896. working,

  897. they missed the

  898. boat completely.

  899. Instead,

  900. they should have

  901. been resting in

  902. him and then

  903. fulfilling the

  904. call for justice

  905. and mercy,

  906. which is what

  907. Jesus does here.

  908. Which kind of

  909. leads us into the

  910. last passage,

  911. which we're going

  912. to look at,

  913. and that's up

  914. into Isaiah,

  915. Isaiah 58,

  916. particularly verse

  917. 13 and 14.

  918. And it's

  919. interesting because

  920. in Isaiah 58,

  921. the whole chapter

  922. is a rebuke.

  923. This is a chapter

  924. that the Pharisees

  925. should have known.

  926. It was a rebuke

  927. of Israel

  928. because of their

  929. Sabbath keeping.

  930. It was a rebuke

  931. because they had

  932. turned to their

  933. religion and their

  934. ritual and the

  935. performance of the

  936. ritual of thinking

  937. that was enough.

  938. But the problem

  939. was when they

  940. prayed,

  941. God wasn't

  942. answering.

  943. They kept calling

  944. and praying and

  945. all they got was

  946. silence.

  947. And they're

  948. wondering,

  949. what's wrong?

  950. We're doing

  951. everything we're

  952. supposed to.

  953. And then we get

  954. these words

  955. in verse 13

  956. and 14,

  957. which you'll see

  958. there on the

  959. screen.

  960. If you turn your

  961. back from the

  962. Sabbath and from

  963. doing your pleasures

  964. on my holy day

  965. and call the

  966. Sabbath a delight

  967. and the holy day

  968. of the Lord

  969. honorable.

  970. If you honor it,

  971. not going your

  972. own ways

  973. or seeking

  974. your own

  975. pleasure

  976. or talking

  977. idly,

  978. then you shall

  979. take delight

  980. in the Lord.

  981. And notice

  982. the point here

  983. is they're

  984. doing all of

  985. the religious

  986. stuff,

  987. but their

  988. hearts are

  989. directed

  990. somewhere else.

  991. And the

  992. focus is not

  993. so much on

  994. the specific

  995. duties they

  996. do,

  997. but what they

  998. really want.

  999. And so the

  1000. message of this

  1001. that really

  1002. Jesus gives

  1003. to the

  1004. Pharisees,

  1005. and I think

  1006. he gives to

  1007. us,

  1008. self-absorption

  1009. can take

  1010. many forms.

  1011. It can take

  1012. the form of

  1013. being highly

  1014. religious,

  1015. very particular

  1016. in our

  1017. following the

  1018. codes and

  1019. the rules.

  1020. It can also

  1021. take the

  1022. form of

  1023. doing whatever

  1024. we want.

  1025. But it all

  1026. comes from

  1027. the same

  1028. place.

  1029. I'm trusting

  1030. me.

  1031. I'm looking

  1032. at me.

  1033. I'm the

  1034. one that

  1035. provides.

  1036. I am the

  1037. one that

  1038. satisfies.

  1039. I am the

  1040. one that

  1041. will give

  1042. myself the

  1043. most pleasure.

  1044. It's all

  1045. about me.

  1046. And God

  1047. simply says,

  1048. I give you

  1049. the Sabbath

  1050. to tell you

  1051. it's not

  1052. about you.

  1053. so to sum

  1054. things up,

  1055. the Sabbath

  1056. is a day

  1057. of rest.

  1058. It's what we

  1059. see from the

  1060. beginning,

  1061. from God

  1062. rested.

  1063. It's a day

  1064. of celebration.

  1065. It's a day

  1066. of celebrating

  1067. all that God

  1068. has done in

  1069. creation,

  1070. but also in

  1071. redemption,

  1072. what he's done

  1073. to bring us

  1074. back into

  1075. fellowship with

  1076. him.

  1077. And this

  1078. is a point

  1079. that we may

  1080. think strange

  1081. because we

  1082. so often see

  1083. the Sabbath

  1084. as a burden,

  1085. but John

  1086. Piper says

  1087. something

  1088. interesting.

  1089. He explains

  1090. it this way.

  1091. He said,

  1092. if we spend

  1093. the day

  1094. focused on

  1095. Jesus,

  1096. the most

  1097. pleasurable

  1098. and the most

  1099. desirable one

  1100. there is,

  1101. it is impossible

  1102. that that day

  1103. would become

  1104. a burden.

  1105. It's a burden

  1106. because we're

  1107. still working.

  1108. We're still

  1109. striving.

  1110. It's all about

  1111. us and it's

  1112. all up to us.

  1113. The Sabbath

  1114. is to be set

  1115. apart from

  1116. all other days,

  1117. made special

  1118. for these purposes.

  1119. It's a day

  1120. of focused

  1121. concentration

  1122. and worship

  1123. and celebrating

  1124. what God

  1125. has done.

  1126. It's a day

  1127. we remember

  1128. all that God

  1129. has done.

  1130. It's a day

  1131. that we

  1132. remember

  1133. our dependence

  1134. and it's a day

  1135. we turn away

  1136. from our

  1137. self-sufficiency.

  1138. So,

  1139. that said,

  1140. how are we

  1141. going to live

  1142. as Christians?

  1143. As those

  1144. who embrace

  1145. God's grace,

  1146. how are we

  1147. supposed to live

  1148. then in light

  1149. of the

  1150. Sabbath?

  1151. I think there's

  1152. three things.

  1153. The first

  1154. is just

  1155. avoiding

  1156. the extremes.

  1157. The extremes

  1158. are really

  1159. two things,

  1160. two directions.

  1161. One is

  1162. that highly

  1163. legislating

  1164. what you're

  1165. supposed to do

  1166. in the specific

  1167. acts.

  1168. In here,

  1169. you can go

  1170. to such extremes.

  1171. I got into

  1172. a conversation

  1173. once.

  1174. I was doing

  1175. a presbytery

  1176. exam with a guy

  1177. and we were

  1178. talking about

  1179. this whole

  1180. Sabbath

  1181. principle

  1182. and asked

  1183. him,

  1184. he says,

  1185. well,

  1186. what can

  1187. you do

  1188. and what

  1189. do you

  1190. think of

  1191. the

  1192. Sabbath?

  1193. What can

  1194. you do?

  1195. What can

  1196. you not

  1197. do on the

  1198. Sabbath?

  1199. And he says,

  1200. well,

  1201. I don't think

  1202. going to a

  1203. Braves game

  1204. on the

  1205. Sabbath

  1206. fits with

  1207. what the

  1208. Sabbath

  1209. means.

  1210. because that's

  1211. doing

  1212. commerce.

  1213. And he says,

  1214. well,

  1215. what if you

  1216. buy your

  1217. ticket on

  1218. Saturday?

  1219. Can you

  1220. go then?

  1221. Well,

  1222. what about

  1223. if you go

  1224. on a

  1225. Saturday night

  1226. game but

  1227. you stay

  1228. out so

  1229. late,

  1230. it's a

  1231. double header

  1232. and it

  1233. goes into

  1234. extra innings

  1235. and you're

  1236. totally exhausted.

  1237. Is that?

  1238. Can you do

  1239. that?

  1240. Or

  1241. can you go

  1242. to the game

  1243. and not buy

  1244. hot dogs?

  1245. Or

  1246. you see,

  1247. if we start

  1248. asking the

  1249. questions,

  1250. if we even

  1251. begin to ask

  1252. the question,

  1253. what specifically

  1254. can I

  1255. and I

  1256. cannot do

  1257. on the

  1258. Sabbath,

  1259. you get into

  1260. a quagmire.

  1261. So we need

  1262. to avoid

  1263. that approach

  1264. because it's

  1265. hopeless.

  1266. You'll never

  1267. get to the

  1268. end.

  1269. But there's

  1270. another

  1271. extreme.

  1272. The other

  1273. extreme is

  1274. we throw

  1275. it out

  1276. altogether.

  1277. And that

  1278. misses the

  1279. point as

  1280. well.

  1281. The

  1282. Sabbath is

  1283. a gift.

  1284. It's given

  1285. to us.

  1286. It was not

  1287. thrown out

  1288. when Jesus

  1289. came.

  1290. He put it

  1291. back in its

  1292. rightful place

  1293. as a place

  1294. for us to

  1295. celebrate.

  1296. And so

  1297. the day

  1298. is a day

  1299. to be special

  1300. and set

  1301. aside.

  1302. where we

  1303. can express

  1304. our faith,

  1305. our trust

  1306. in the

  1307. one who

  1308. provides.

  1309. So

  1310. avoiding the

  1311. two extremes.

  1312. The second

  1313. thing is

  1314. embracing it

  1315. as a gift.

  1316. God gives

  1317. us a

  1318. Sabbath as

  1319. a gift

  1320. of rest

  1321. but I

  1322. think it's

  1323. a bigger

  1324. gift than

  1325. that.

  1326. And it's

  1327. not just

  1328. that physical

  1329. rest.

  1330. Some of you

  1331. need some

  1332. physical rest.

  1333. Some of you

  1334. need to quit

  1335. carting your

  1336. kids around

  1337. town,

  1338. quit running

  1339. to the

  1340. store,

  1341. quit work

  1342. for one

  1343. day,

  1344. quit studying

  1345. and just

  1346. rest.

  1347. But we're

  1348. talking here

  1349. about something

  1350. more deeply.

  1351. And the

  1352. gift that

  1353. God gives

  1354. us on

  1355. the

  1356. Sabbath

  1357. is actually

  1358. a gift

  1359. that protects

  1360. us from

  1361. our

  1362. idolatries.

  1363. It first

  1364. protects us

  1365. from this

  1366. idolatry of

  1367. self-dependence.

  1368. By telling us

  1369. not to work

  1370. on one day,

  1371. it simply

  1372. tries to

  1373. break that

  1374. hold of

  1375. I am the

  1376. one that

  1377. has to make

  1378. it happen.

  1379. If I don't

  1380. work, I

  1381. won't eat.

  1382. And God

  1383. says,

  1384. uh-uh.

  1385. You eat

  1386. because I

  1387. provide.

  1388. You have

  1389. all you need

  1390. because I

  1391. give.

  1392. And so the

  1393. Sabbath is a

  1394. way to protect

  1395. our hearts

  1396. from that

  1397. kind of

  1398. self-dependence

  1399. of thinking

  1400. it's all

  1401. up to

  1402. me.

  1403. It also

  1404. protects us

  1405. from the

  1406. idolatry of

  1407. acceptance.

  1408. What are

  1409. your neighbors

  1410. going to

  1411. think?

  1412. What are

  1413. your kids'

  1414. friends going

  1415. to think

  1416. when they

  1417. can't do

  1418. travel sports

  1419. on Sunday?

  1420. They said,

  1421. man,

  1422. y'all a bunch

  1423. of weirdos,

  1424. a bunch

  1425. of religious

  1426. freaks.

  1427. You're going

  1428. to be looked

  1429. at as

  1430. different and

  1431. weird.

  1432. Yeah.

  1433. In some

  1434. ways,

  1435. that's part

  1436. of the

  1437. point.

  1438. Our

  1439. acceptance

  1440. doesn't

  1441. come from

  1442. other people.

  1443. Our identity,

  1444. our sense

  1445. of belonging

  1446. doesn't come

  1447. from somebody

  1448. else's smile

  1449. and pat on

  1450. my back.

  1451. It comes

  1452. from the

  1453. Father who

  1454. has set

  1455. me apart

  1456. as his

  1457. own.

  1458. And I

  1459. am different.

  1460. I don't

  1461. belong here in

  1462. this world.

  1463. If that's

  1464. news to

  1465. you,

  1466. we are

  1467. citizens of

  1468. another kingdom.

  1469. We don't

  1470. belong here.

  1471. And when

  1472. we follow

  1473. Christ,

  1474. we are

  1475. different.

  1476. We can't

  1477. help it.

  1478. And so,

  1479. in a sense,

  1480. this guards

  1481. us from

  1482. this idolatry

  1483. that we

  1484. have of

  1485. other people's

  1486. approval.

  1487. The third

  1488. thing,

  1489. it guards

  1490. us from

  1491. this idolatry

  1492. of self-determination.

  1493. The Sabbath,

  1494. in a way,

  1495. is a

  1496. line.

  1497. And all

  1498. you have

  1499. to do

  1500. is draw

  1501. a line

  1502. in front

  1503. of someone

  1504. and then

  1505. they're going

  1506. to feel

  1507. there's a

  1508. fence,

  1509. there's a

  1510. barrier,

  1511. and then

  1512. they want

  1513. to cross

  1514. it.

  1515. So,

  1516. don't put

  1517. a barrier

  1518. up to

  1519. me.

  1520. Don't

  1521. restrain

  1522. me.

  1523. I am

  1524. self-determining.

  1525. I am

  1526. the one

  1527. who rules.

  1528. You know,

  1529. and Paul

  1530. himself said

  1531. in Romans 7,

  1532. all you got

  1533. to do

  1534. to tell

  1535. somebody,

  1536. if you want

  1537. to get

  1538. them to sin

  1539. is tell

  1540. them don't

  1541. do it.

  1542. There's

  1543. the fence.

  1544. And that

  1545. rears up

  1546. in us

  1547. this

  1548. self-determination

  1549. that we

  1550. have.

  1551. And the

  1552. Sabbath

  1553. is one

  1554. of those

  1555. things where

  1556. God gives

  1557. us and

  1558. says,

  1559. no,

  1560. you don't.

  1561. This is not

  1562. about you.

  1563. This is the

  1564. place

  1565. where you

  1566. hear my

  1567. word

  1568. and you

  1569. say,

  1570. I trust

  1571. you.

  1572. it.

  1573. And so

  1574. this is one

  1575. of those

  1576. gifts that

  1577. we have

  1578. that guards

  1579. us.

  1580. But then

  1581. the third

  1582. thing we

  1583. see as

  1584. we celebrate

  1585. the

  1586. Sabbath

  1587. is we

  1588. celebrate

  1589. a hope

  1590. of something

  1591. greater.

  1592. See,

  1593. we need

  1594. rest.

  1595. We need

  1596. rest more

  1597. than just

  1598. one day.

  1599. But in

  1600. Hebrews,

  1601. as Will's

  1602. already read,

  1603. a rest is

  1604. coming.

  1605. Where a

  1606. rest from

  1607. all of our

  1608. striving,

  1609. all of our

  1610. working,

  1611. all of our

  1612. performing,

  1613. we're going

  1614. to get to

  1615. rest

  1616. ultimately,

  1617. finally,

  1618. completely,

  1619. because

  1620. it'll all

  1621. be over.

  1622. A rest

  1623. is coming

  1624. where we

  1625. will stand

  1626. before God

  1627. and we

  1628. will see

  1629. him smile,

  1630. say,

  1631. well done,

  1632. good and

  1633. faithful servant,

  1634. enter into

  1635. the rest

  1636. of your

  1637. master.

  1638. And when

  1639. we celebrate

  1640. the Sabbath

  1641. together,

  1642. we are

  1643. saying,

  1644. that is

  1645. my hope.

  1646. This is

  1647. just a taste.

  1648. It's just

  1649. a foretaste.

  1650. This is

  1651. not the

  1652. end of

  1653. the story.

  1654. This just

  1655. sets our

  1656. sights on

  1657. something

  1658. much,

  1659. much

  1660. greater

  1661. and more

  1662. glorious

  1663. to come.

  1664. God

  1665. is

  1666. to

  1667. God

  1668. is

  1669. the

  1670. gift

  1671. of the

  1672. Sabbath.

  1673. And really,

  1674. when we

  1675. come to

  1676. this table,

  1677. when we

  1678. come to

  1679. the Lord's

  1680. table,

  1681. this is

  1682. what we

  1683. celebrate.

  1684. We

  1685. celebrate.

  1686. We stop

  1687. our rest,

  1688. we stop

  1689. our working,

  1690. and we

  1691. gather around

  1692. the table

  1693. as a

  1694. feast.

  1695. we rest

  1696. in the

  1697. work that

  1698. Christ has

  1699. done.

  1700. His

  1701. broken body,

  1702. His shed

  1703. blood,

  1704. has paid,

  1705. and has

  1706. earned,

  1707. and established

  1708. our rest.

  1709. And so we

  1710. celebrate

  1711. this

  1712. together.

  1713. So let

  1714. me,

  1715. this is the

  1716. invitation.

  1717. Those of

  1718. you who

  1719. are in

  1720. Christ,

  1721. come

  1722. and

  1723. remember

  1724. the deep

  1725. rest that

  1726. has been

  1727. given and

  1728. provided for

  1729. us through

  1730. Christ.

  1731. But I

  1732. will also

  1733. acknowledge that

  1734. some of you

  1735. here may not

  1736. know Christ,

  1737. but I

  1738. would also

  1739. say,

  1740. more than

  1741. likely,

  1742. you are

  1743. exhausted,

  1744. you are

  1745. tired.

  1746. Don't

  1747. come to

  1748. the table,

  1749. but come

  1750. to Jesus.

  1751. Come to

  1752. the one

  1753. who says,

  1754. all you

  1755. are weary

  1756. and heavy

  1757. laden,

  1758. I have

  1759. given you

  1760. rest.

  1761. So come

  1762. to Christ,

  1763. stop your

  1764. striving to

  1765. be good

  1766. enough.

  1767. stop your

  1768. striving to

  1769. provide

  1770. enough.

  1771. Come to

  1772. the one

  1773. who has

  1774. done

  1775. everything

  1776. and is

  1777. satisfied.

  1778. Come to

  1779. the table

  1780. and again

  1781. and remember

  1782. and taste

  1783. the rest

  1784. we have in

  1785. Christ.

  1786. Let's pray

  1787. together.

  1788. Lord Jesus,

  1789. as we

  1790. come,

  1791. would you

  1792. in a very

  1793. tangible way

  1794. help us to

  1795. remember the

  1796. rest that

  1797. you've given?

  1798. Help us to

  1799. taste it.

  1800. Help us to

  1801. sense it.

  1802. Help us to

  1803. know it.

  1804. Come and meet

  1805. us here.

  1806. We are tired

  1807. Lord.

  1808. And we

  1809. don't have

  1810. to be.

  1811. Bring us

  1812. into your

  1813. rest.

  1814. Through your

  1815. shed blood,

  1816. your broken

  1817. body,

  1818. it was all

  1819. done for

  1820. us.

  1821. We pray in

  1822. Jesus' name.

  1823. Amen.

  1824. Let me read

  1825. you these

  1826. words from

  1827. 1 Corinthians

  1828. where Paul

  1829. says,

  1830. For I

  1831. received from

  1832. the Lord

  1833. what I

  1834. also delivered

  1835. to you,

  1836. that the

  1837. Lord Jesus

  1838. on the

  1839. night when

  1840. he was

  1841. betrayed,

  1842. he took

  1843. bread,

  1844. and when

  1845. he had

  1846. given

  1847. thanks,

  1848. he broke

  1849. it and

  1850. said,

  1851. This is

  1852. my body

  1853. which is

  1854. for you.

  1855. Do this

  1856. in remembrance

  1857. of me.

  1858. In the same

  1859. way he took

  1860. the cup

  1861. after supper

  1862. saying,

  1863. This cup

  1864. is the

  1865. new covenant

  1866. in my

  1867. blood.

  1868. Do this

  1869. as often

  1870. as you

  1871. drink it

  1872. in remembrance

  1873. of me,

  1874. for as

  1875. often as

  1876. you eat

  1877. this bread

  1878. and drink

  1879. this cup,

  1880. you proclaim

  1881. the Lord's

  1882. death

  1883. until he

  1884. comes.

  1885. The body

  1886. of the

  1887. Lord Jesus

  1888. as we

  1889. see in

  1890. this bread

  1891. was broken,

  1892. took our

  1893. judgment.

  1894. His blood

  1895. was poured

  1896. out to

  1897. wash us

  1898. clean from

  1899. all of our

  1900. failure,

  1901. all of our

  1902. sin.

  1903. Come and

  1904. eat,

  1905. come and

  1906. drink,

  1907. and remember

  1908. the gift

  1909. of rest.
