  1. You are listening to a message from Southwood Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama.

  2. Our passion is to experience and express grace. Join us.

  3. We are back in Luke chapter 13 this morning, although what a great break it was last week

    Luke 13 chapter mention

  4. for our Express Grace conference. If you missed the sermon last Sunday about how remembering the

  5. gospel drives us to mission both here and everywhere, or the great panel discussion that

  6. we had with some of our global mission partners, those are both online. You can go hear those. I

  7. encourage you to check those out there. But we've been in a series walking through Luke,

  8. listening right now to Jesus teaching us about his kingdom as he journeys toward the cross.

  9. In the passage we just finished, Jesus taught us about kingdom significance, what matters,

  10. what's important. And this morning, it's about kingdom participation. Who gets to be a part

  11. of his kingdom? As I read, listen to Jesus' passion, his emotional intensity. There's stern warnings,

  12. deep angst and grief at the end. We're going to read it Luke 13 beginning at verse 22. This is God's

  13. holy word. It's the only thing you'll hold this week that is absolutely reliable. The only thing you'll

  14. read that is unfailingly for your good. Luke 13 verse 22. Jesus went on his way through towns and

    Luke 13:22

  15. villages teaching and journeying toward Jerusalem. And someone said to him, Lord, will those who are

  16. saved be few? And he said to them, strive to enter through the narrow door. For many, I tell you, will

  17. seek to enter and will not be able. When once the master of the house has risen and shut the door and

  18. you begin to stand outside and to knock at the door saying, Lord, open to us, then he will answer you,

  19. I do not know where you come from. And then you will begin to say, we ate and drank in your presence

  20. and you taught in our streets. But he will say, I tell you, I do not know where you come from.

  21. Depart from me, all you workers of evil. In that place, there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth

  22. when you see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, but you yourselves

  23. cast out. And people will come from east and west and from north and south and recline at table in

  24. the kingdom of God. And behold, some are last who will be first. And some are first who will be last.

  25. At that very hour, some Pharisees came and said to him, get away from here for Herod wants to kill you.

  26. And he said to them, go and tell that fox, behold, I cast out demons and perform cures today and

  27. tomorrow. And the third day I finished my course. Nevertheless, I must go on my way today and

  28. tomorrow and the day following, for it cannot be that a prophet should perish away from Jerusalem.

  29. Oh, Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it.

  30. How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings?

  31. And you would not. Behold, your house is forsaken. And I tell you, you will not see me until you say,

  32. blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Let's pray together.

  33. Father, we're grateful for your word,

  34. especially because it tells us about Jesus,

  35. your son, our only hope,

  36. our great joy.

  37. Would you show us him clearly

  38. and brilliantly

  39. this morning.

  40. Teach us through your word, Holy Spirit, come

  41. and speak to our hearts, we ask in Jesus' name.

  42. Amen.

  43. Someone was telling me earlier this morning

  44. that there is a football game tonight,

  45. which was really confusing to me

  46. since like some of you,

  47. I was certain that football season ended in early January.

  48. I think that's how it should be.

  49. But apparently,

  50. the Patriots and the Eagles

  51. are playing a game

  52. in Minneapolis tonight

  53. and probably in front of a

  54. close to sellout crowd

  55. in a pretty full stadium.

  56. But imagine

  57. that you actually

  58. flew up there

  59. after this service

  60. in time

  61. to be there

  62. for the game

  63. because the Patriots

  64. are your team.

  65. And so you

  66. fly up there

  67. and you meet all your friends

  68. there

  69. outside the stadium.

  70. You've got your number 12

  71. Tom Brady jersey on.

  72. You put some eye black

  73. underneath your eyes.

  74. You are fired up

  75. for this game, man.

  76. You are,

  77. you're marching toward the stadium

  78. chanting and ready to go

  79. and you get up there

  80. to the gate

  81. and there's this lady

  82. with a scanner

  83. and your friends

  84. are pulling out

  85. these like strange

  86. little rectangular pieces

  87. of paper

  88. and handing them to her

  89. and walking in.

  90. And so you're just

  91. kind of walking along

  92. with all your friends

  93. headed into the game

  94. and she says,

  95. I'm sorry sir,

  96. you don't have a ticket.

  97. Now imagine

  98. that when she says that

  99. you respond this way,

  100. ma'am,

  101. I grew up

  102. a Patriots fan.

  103. I've got a picture

  104. of me coming home

  105. from the hospital

  106. in a Patriots onesie.

  107. All my life

  108. I'm the biggest fan

  109. I have been to

  110. every single game

  111. this year,

  112. home and away.

  113. I haven't missed one.

  114. You don't understand

  115. what a huge

  116. Patriots fan I am.

  117. I'm sorry sir.

  118. You can't come in.

  119. And you start to get

  120. a bit worked up

  121. at this point, right?

  122. Like this is not okay.

  123. But all my friends

  124. are in there

  125. and we hang out

  126. and watch these games

  127. together

  128. and talk football

  129. all the time.

  130. I'm sorry sir.

  131. And perhaps

  132. she would add

  133. if she had heard

  134. this sermon

  135. which would seem unlikely,

  136. association

  137. does not equal

  138. participation.

  139. In other words,

  140. apparently

  141. you didn't consider

  142. thoughtfully

  143. what qualified someone

  144. to be a part

  145. of the Super Bowl.

  146. And that would be

  147. really sad for you,

  148. wouldn't it?

  149. To have made that trip

  150. all the way up

  151. to Minnesota

  152. and be left out

  153. in a frigid winter

  154. listening to the game

  155. in a cold parking lot

  156. on a radio.

  157. But Jesus is cautioning us

  158. in this passage

  159. about an even more subtle

  160. and even more significant

  161. situation

  162. to consider.

  163. And that's not

  164. considering thoughtfully

  165. what qualifies someone

  166. to be a part

  167. of the kingdom of God.

  168. And that would be

  169. so much more tragic

  170. for you to have made

  171. the trip to church

  172. so many times

  173. and end up

  174. missing out

  175. on the glory

  176. of the kingdom.

  177. I think that's partially

  178. why you hear

  179. Jesus' emotions

  180. come out so strongly

  181. in this passage.

  182. He wants you to understand

  183. and experience

  184. what it takes

  185. truly to participate

  186. in the kingdom.

  187. To be a child of God

  188. rather than of Satan.

  189. To be on the side of good

  190. rather than of evil.

  191. To be welcomed into heaven

  192. rather than left out

  193. in hell.

  194. How would you

  195. determine that?

  196. How would you know

  197. if you were in

  198. a right relationship

  199. with God?

  200. Jesus wants us to know.

  201. Let's look at how

  202. he teaches us

  203. in this passage.

  204. At first

  205. he highlights

  206. the importance

  207. of true participation.

  208. Verse 22.

  209. He went on his way

  210. through towns

  211. and villages

  212. teaching and journeying

  213. toward Jerusalem.

  214. He's been headed there

  215. for several chapters now.

  216. He's going there to die.

  217. Right?

  218. He's not been unclear

  219. about that.

  220. And someone said to him,

  221. Lord, will those who are saved

  222. be few?

  223. And Jesus' response,

  224. strive to enter

  225. through the narrow door

  226. for many, I tell you,

  227. will seek to enter

  228. and will not be able.

  229. Hmm.

  230. Not really a

  231. straightforward answer

  232. to the question.

  233. Right?

  234. He answers

  235. this question

  236. from the crowd

  237. with a command

  238. not to consider

  239. how many will be saved.

  240. Seems like that would have

  241. been an easy thing.

  242. Just give us a number.

  243. But rather to consider

  244. whether you

  245. will be.

  246. Now let me remind you

  247. what these crowds

  248. of Jews

  249. following Jesus

  250. would have believed

  251. at this point in time.

  252. Most of the influential

  253. Jewish teaching

  254. during Jesus' day

  255. was teaching

  256. that more or less

  257. all

  258. or at least

  259. most

  260. of the Jews

  261. would be in the kingdom.

  262. They would be saved

  263. a part of the kingdom

  264. of God.

  265. Perhaps a few

  266. of the worst

  267. would get left out

  268. depending on

  269. who you read.

  270. But most or all

  271. would be in.

  272. On the other hand,

  273. most or all

  274. Gentiles

  275. were left out.

  276. Yes,

  277. for most of them

  278. there was the occasional

  279. Gentile

  280. who got grafted

  281. into the family of God,

  282. got through all

  283. the right ceremonies,

  284. could become a part

  285. of that

  286. and be a part

  287. of the kingdom.

  288. But most

  289. of the Gentiles

  290. were left out.

  291. And Jesus

  292. will actually say

  293. in this passage,

  294. in answer to the question

  295. how many will be saved,

  296. fewer Jews

  297. than you expect.

  298. Fewer

  299. of those

  300. who think

  301. they're in

  302. and

  303. more.

  304. More Gentiles

  305. than you expect.

  306. And here goes Jesus

  307. again

  308. turning our expectations

  309. upside down,

  310. right?

  311. Insiders out

  312. and outsiders in.

  313. The religious

  314. missing out

  315. on the kingdom

  316. and the irreligious

  317. walking right in.

  318. Sounds like a warning

  319. for people sitting

  320. in a place like this,

  321. doesn't it?

  322. Jesus says,

  323. strive to enter

  324. through the narrow

  325. door

  326. for many

  327. will seek

  328. to enter

  329. and not be able.

  330. Now he doesn't

  331. mean that very few

  332. people will be saved.

  333. He's actually

  334. just told us

  335. in the previous passage

  336. about the great growth

  337. of the kingdom

  338. and how many

  339. get to be a part of it.

  340. He's going to

  341. say that again

  342. in just a moment.

  343. But he does start

  344. by focusing

  345. on those

  346. who are not

  347. saved.

  348. What does he mean

  349. by a narrow

  350. door with these

  351. many

  352. who are not

  353. able

  354. to get in?

  355. It can be

  356. confusing.

  357. So first,

  358. one thing he doesn't

  359. mean

  360. is this passage

  361. contradicting

  362. the one

  363. where it says,

  364. ask and it will

  365. be given to you.

  366. Seek and you will

  367. find.

  368. Knock and the door

  369. will be opened

  370. to you.

  371. Is this a

  372. contradiction?

  373. No,

  374. it's not.

  375. Jesus is not

  376. painting a picture

  377. here as we

  378. continue to read

  379. through the passage

  380. where these people

  381. are left out

  382. standing,

  383. banging on the

  384. door saying,

  385. God,

  386. we need your

  387. help.

  388. We trust Jesus.

  389. We want a

  390. relationship with

  391. you.

  392. Only to find

  393. God coldly

  394. locking the door

  395. and walking

  396. away,

  397. refusing

  398. them entrance.

  399. That's not

  400. the biblical

  401. picture of

  402. God at all.

  403. These many

  404. instead,

  405. as we keep

  406. reading,

  407. we find out

  408. they're Jews

  409. who are

  410. religious.

  411. They're the

  412. insiders.

  413. They're the ones

  414. who've been around

  415. the things of

  416. God and they

  417. are seeking to

  418. enter the kingdom

  419. of God on

  420. their own

  421. terms.

  422. That's what we

  423. find out as we

  424. keep reading.

  425. They presume,

  426. like the

  427. Super Bowl fan,

  428. that their

  429. association

  430. with Team

  431. Jesus

  432. is enough.

  433. Well,

  434. if that's not

  435. true participation,

  436. then what is it?

  437. What does the

  438. narrow door

  439. mean?

  440. Well,

  441. Jesus has been

  442. teaching about that

  443. every time he's

  444. opened his mouth

  445. in these chapters,

  446. hasn't he?

  447. In chapter 12,

  448. over and over,

  449. he said,

  450. it's your

  451. connection to

  452. Jesus that

  453. saves you.

  454. You have to

  455. trust the king

  456. to be a part

  457. of the kingdom.

  458. Eternity hinges

  459. on your active

  460. embrace of

  461. Jesus.

  462. And in chapter

  463. 13, he starts

  464. to show us a

  465. little bit more

  466. what that means.

  467. What does that

  468. look like?

  469. He says,

  470. repent,

  471. or you too

  472. will perish.

  473. And he says

  474. that repeatedly.

  475. Repent.

  476. Turn from your

  477. sin and

  478. yourself and

  479. trust Jesus.

  480. Give up hope

  481. of deserving

  482. salvation,

  483. of earning your

  484. way into the

  485. kingdom,

  486. and trust

  487. the Savior

  488. King.

  489. See, the narrow

  490. door is not

  491. to say how

  492. few are

  493. saved,

  494. but rather

  495. that there is

  496. one way in.

  497. Jesus.

  498. Not knowing

  499. a lot about

  500. him,

  501. not hanging

  502. around his

  503. people,

  504. not talking

  505. like him.

  506. No,

  507. it's easier

  508. than that

  509. and harder

  510. than that

  511. at the same

  512. time.

  513. It's repent

  514. and believe

  515. the good

  516. news.

  517. You must

  518. actually see

  519. your own

  520. emptiness,

  521. which is really

  522. hard,

  523. and embrace

  524. Jesus desperately

  525. and fully

  526. with your heart

  527. and all your

  528. life.

  529. That's true

  530. participation

  531. in God's

  532. kingdom.

  533. But see,

  534. there's a

  535. subtle fraud

  536. out there

  537. that still

  538. lives today,

  539. and Jesus

  540. tells a brief

  541. story to

  542. highlight it,

  543. to highlight

  544. the deception

  545. of mere

  546. association.

  547. Verse 25,

  548. the people

  549. who want in

  550. knock,

  551. and the

  552. master says,

  553. I don't know

  554. where you

  555. come from.

  556. Verse 26,

  557. then you

  558. will begin

  559. to say,

  560. we ate

  561. and drank

  562. in your

  563. presence,

  564. and you

  565. taught in

  566. our streets.

  567. Jesus,

  568. Jesus,

  569. we hung

  570. out.

  571. You were

  572. here,

  573. you were

  574. around with

  575. us.

  576. Remember,

  577. we ate

  578. dinner that

  579. time.

  580. We heard

  581. lots of

  582. things that

  583. you said.

  584. You're

  585. clearly just

  586. confused.

  587. Do you

  588. see the

  589. deception

  590. and the

  591. warning that

  592. Jesus gives

  593. to those

  594. who've been

  595. around him

  596. a lot?

  597. Jesus,

  598. we heard

  599. what you

  600. taught.

  601. We grew

  602. up around

  603. the Bible

  604. all the

  605. time.

  606. We

  607. memorized

  608. a lot

  609. of it.

  610. I mean,

  611. honestly,

  612. Jesus,

  613. what do you

  614. think we

  615. are?

  616. Muslim?

  617. Hindu?

  618. Atheist?

  619. No way!

  620. We must

  621. be Christians.

  622. You don't

  623. remember us?

  624. Check the

  625. Southwood

  626. attendance

  627. register.

  628. We signed

  629. in.

  630. We were

  631. there.

  632. All of

  633. our friends

  634. were there

  635. with us.

  636. You know,

  637. our family,

  638. they're in

  639. there too.

  640. I'm sure

  641. there's just

  642. been a

  643. mistake,

  644. an oversight.

  645. Do you

  646. see how

  647. deceptive

  648. mere

  649. association

  650. can be?

  651. How being

  652. around the

  653. things of

  654. God and

  655. the people

  656. of God

  657. can give

  658. you a

  659. temptation

  660. to believe

  661. there's

  662. something

  663. genuine

  664. happening

  665. when it's

  666. not?

  667. It's a

  668. struggle that

  669. some don't

  670. have.

  671. I don't

  672. know any

  673. atheists in

  674. Huntsville

  675. who are

  676. planning on

  677. explaining to

  678. God how

  679. to get

  680. into

  681. heaven.

  682. That's

  683. not their

  684. intention.

  685. But I

  686. know lots

  687. of professing

  688. Christians

  689. whose answers

  690. sound a

  691. lot like the

  692. people knocking

  693. and hearing

  694. Jesus say,

  695. I don't know

  696. where you

  697. come from.

  698. You never

  699. trusted me.

  700. You never

  701. shaped your

  702. life around

  703. my kingdom.

  704. You just

  705. enjoyed your

  706. coffee,

  707. talked to

  708. some friends,

  709. watched from

  710. a distance,

  711. and were

  712. content in

  713. your own

  714. associations.

  715. It made

  716. you happy.

  717. And so

  718. you plead

  719. your association

  720. with religious

  721. people and

  722. religious

  723. organizations,

  724. and Jesus

  725. says,

  726. verse 27,

  727. I tell you,

  728. I do not

  729. know where

  730. you come

  731. from.

  732. Depart from

  733. me, all you

  734. workers of

  735. evil.

  736. In that place

  737. where you're

  738. going, there

  739. will be

  740. weeping and

  741. gnashing of

  742. teeth.

  743. You're going

  744. to see

  745. Abraham,

  746. Isaac,

  747. Jacob,

  748. and the

  749. prophets

  750. in, but

  751. you yourselves

  752. cast out.

  753. And that's

  754. the devastation

  755. of mere

  756. association.

  757. This is no

  758. football game

  759. that you're

  760. missing out on

  761. to sit in a

  762. cold parking

  763. lot.

  764. It's a lot

  765. more serious

  766. than that.

  767. You can't

  768. just be a

  769. decent guy

  770. in the

  771. middle,

  772. just didn't

  773. get everything

  774. you wanted.

  775. Now, Jesus

  776. says to those

  777. who are not

  778. in the

  779. kingdom,

  780. workers of

  781. evil.

  782. workers of

  783. evil cast

  784. out into a

  785. place with

  786. weeping and

  787. gnashing of

  788. teeth.

  789. That's the

  790. warning.

  791. He wants you

  792. to know the

  793. truth about

  794. the eternal

  795. difference between

  796. mere association

  797. and true

  798. participation,

  799. lest you

  800. suffer eternal

  801. torment.

  802. If you know

  803. you're here

  804. this morning

  805. just playing

  806. a game,

  807. please hear

  808. this warning.

  809. Please consider

  810. your own

  811. heart.

  812. It's a

  813. serious

  814. warning.

  815. So who

  816. gets in?

  817. Boy, we

  818. really need to

  819. know now,

  820. don't we?

  821. Who gets

  822. in?

  823. Verse 28

  824. gives us a

  825. window into

  826. the kingdom

  827. feast.

  828. Who's in

  829. there?

  830. What's the

  831. identity of

  832. the true

  833. participants?

  834. Some of the

  835. ones in the

  836. kingdom are

  837. the ones you'd

  838. expect, the

  839. usual suspects.

  840. Abraham,

  841. Isaac,

  842. Jacob,

  843. all the

  844. prophets.

  845. Hmm.

  846. So,

  847. so religious

  848. association

  849. doesn't

  850. disqualify you.

  851. Those are

  852. pretty religious

  853. people.

  854. Maybe you

  855. have to be a

  856. really holy

  857. Jew.

  858. Maybe it's

  859. all about

  860. one's

  861. performance.

  862. Except that

  863. Abraham said

  864. his wife was

  865. his sister to

  866. protect himself

  867. and violate

  868. her.

  869. And he had a

  870. son by his

  871. maidservant.

  872. And Jacob was

  873. a serial liar

  874. and deceiver.

  875. So,

  876. no.

  877. But,

  878. Abraham

  879. believed

  880. God.

  881. And it was

  882. counted to him

  883. as righteousness.

  884. He was called

  885. a friend of

  886. God.

  887. That's what the

  888. prophets were

  889. famous for,

  890. wasn't it?

  891. Calling God's

  892. people to

  893. repent and

  894. to trust

  895. him again.

  896. So,

  897. being a

  898. Jew is

  899. not enough,

  900. Jesus says.

  901. But even

  902. Jews who

  903. fail can

  904. be saved

  905. by repentance

  906. and faith.

  907. So,

  908. I look in

  909. the stadium,

  910. so to speak,

  911. and sure

  912. enough,

  913. some of my

  914. church friends

  915. are in

  916. there.

  917. But there's

  918. even bigger

  919. news.

  920. There's

  921. unusual

  922. suspects.

  923. I don't

  924. know if

  925. that's a

  926. thing.

  927. But verse

  928. 29,

  929. people coming

  930. from east

  931. and west,

  932. north and

  933. south,

  934. and reclining

  935. at table

  936. in the kingdom

  937. of God.

  938. Some who

  939. are last

  940. who will be

  941. first,

  942. and some

  943. are first

  944. who will be

  945. last.

  946. Right there,

  947. as you look in

  948. at the head

  949. of the table

  950. in the kingdom

  951. feast,

  952. Gentiles,

  953. those who

  954. seem the least

  955. likely to be

  956. included,

  957. the unclean,

  958. the ones with

  959. no association

  960. with God's

  961. people at all.

  962. Jesus,

  963. this is not

  964. okay.

  965. They're not

  966. supposed to

  967. be there.

  968. It's not how

  969. we do things.

  970. I thought you

  971. said something

  972. about a narrow

  973. door,

  974. and now there

  975. just seems to

  976. be doors

  977. everywhere.

  978. North,

  979. south,

  980. east,

  981. and west,

  982. come on

  983. in,

  984. everybody.

  985. Can we

  986. go back

  987. to the

  988. narrow one

  989. where only

  990. we get

  991. in?

  992. Come on,

  993. Jesus.

  994. They're letting

  995. anyone in

  996. these days.

  997. People not

  998. even wearing

  999. team colors.

  1000. They're Vikings

  1001. fans up here

  1002. in Minneapolis.

  1003. They don't

  1004. even root

  1005. for the

  1006. Patriots.

  1007. They have

  1008. no connections

  1009. at all.

  1010. Look what

  1011. I'm wearing.

  1012. I got the

  1013. jersey and the

  1014. eye black.

  1015. I'm in,

  1016. right?

  1017. I used to

  1018. drive by that

  1019. guy mowing his

  1020. grass on my

  1021. way to church

  1022. on Sundays.

  1023. She got

  1024. pregnant in

  1025. high school,

  1026. didn't even

  1027. keep the

  1028. baby.

  1029. He's never

  1030. been to

  1031. Bible study.

  1032. How can

  1033. someone like

  1034. that be in

  1035. the kingdom

  1036. while a

  1037. decent,

  1038. church-going

  1039. person like

  1040. me is

  1041. left out?

  1042. How are

  1043. all these

  1044. half-hearted

  1045. Patriots and

  1046. Eagles and

  1047. couldn't-care-less

  1048. fans in that

  1049. stadium while

  1050. I'm out here

  1051. in my jersey

  1052. and I

  1053. black?

  1054. Well,

  1055. everyone in

  1056. the stadium

  1057. has one

  1058. thing in

  1059. common,

  1060. a ticket.

  1061. They entered

  1062. through the

  1063. ticket gate,

  1064. door,

  1065. which is

  1066. Jesus,

  1067. a door that

  1068. requires not

  1069. purchasing

  1070. qualification in

  1071. this case,

  1072. but rather

  1073. putting down

  1074. your own

  1075. qualifications

  1076. and trusting

  1077. his.

  1078. It's grace.

  1079. That's what

  1080. makes you a

  1081. participant in

  1082. this kingdom.

  1083. Kids,

  1084. I want to

  1085. talk especially

  1086. to you for

  1087. just a minute.

  1088. I know it

  1089. can be really

  1090. hard to listen

  1091. to me for a

  1092. long time.

  1093. I get that.

  1094. I've been

  1095. there.

  1096. But I want

  1097. you to

  1098. concentrate for

  1099. a minute because

  1100. this is God's

  1101. word, so it's

  1102. really important.

  1103. Jesus wants

  1104. you to know

  1105. what it really

  1106. means to be

  1107. a Christian.

  1108. Because it's

  1109. confusing sometimes

  1110. to us,

  1111. isn't it?

  1112. To really be a

  1113. Christian, it

  1114. doesn't mean

  1115. going to church

  1116. with your

  1117. family, or

  1118. even going to

  1119. Sunday school

  1120. every week, or

  1121. even praying a

  1122. lot, like when

  1123. you eat and when

1124. you go to bed and

  1125. other times.

  1126. Although those are

  1127. good things, and

  1128. those are things

  1129. that Christians do,

  1130. but that's not

  1131. what makes you a

  1132. Christian.

  1133. Christian.

  1134. What makes you a

  1135. Christian is not

  1136. anything good that

  1137. you do.

  1138. It's something

  1139. perfect that Jesus

  1140. does.

  1141. Does that difference

  1142. make sense?

  1143. You can't do enough

  1144. good things.

  1145. Jesus has done

  1146. something perfect for

  1147. you.

  1148. Jesus lived a

  1149. perfect life, right?

1150. And then he died on

  1151. the cross to forgive

  1152. your sins.

1153. And he rose from the

1154. dead so that you can

  1155. live like him.

  1156. And that's what it

  1157. means to be a

  1158. Christian.

1159. Not to do a lot of

  1160. good things, but to

1161. trust the one who is

  1162. really good and

  1163. really perfect.

  1164. That you trust him,

  1165. that you believe in

  1166. him.

  1167. Rather than saying to

  1168. yourself, I'm really

  1169. good, you say, God,

1170. I want to be in your

  1171. family, and I know

1172. that the only one good

1173. enough to be in your

  1174. family is Jesus.

  1175. So I trust him.

  1176. If you've never

  1177. trusted Jesus, you

  1178. don't have to wait.

1179. You can do that today,

  1180. right now, and then

  1181. come talk with your

  1182. parents or with me

  1183. after the service about

1184. that, or come to the

  1185. communicants class if you

  1186. want.

  1187. But listen, one last

  1188. thing.

  1189. Well, you can keep

  1190. listening, but for now.

  1191. If you think you're a

  1192. good kid, you really

1193. need to trust Jesus and

  1194. not you.

1195. And if you think you're

  1196. a bad kid, and you're

  1197. not really good enough,

  1198. you can trust Jesus

  1199. too.

1200. And he loves you, and he

  1201. forgives you, and you

1202. can all be a part of his

  1203. family.

1204. That's the good news of

  1205. Jesus.

  1206. That's what Jesus wants.

1207. Jesus wants to have us in

  1208. his family.

1209. This is not a passage about

1210. how Jesus wants to keep

  1211. people out.

1212. Look at the end of it,

  1213. and this beautiful look

1214. we get at the heart of

  1215. Jesus.

1216. Verse 31, at the very

  1217. hour, some Pharisees came

1218. and said to him, get away

1219. from here, for Herod wants

  1220. to kill you.

1221. And he said to them, go

1222. and tell that fox, behold,

1223. I cast out demons and

  1224. perform cures today and

  1225. tomorrow, and the third

1226. day I finish my course.

1227. Nevertheless, I must go on

1228. my way today and tomorrow

1229. and the day following, for

1230. it cannot be that a prophet

  1231. should perish away from

  1232. Jerusalem.

1233. Tell Herod, I'm not afraid

1234. of his threats because I'm

1235. already on my way to my

  1236. death.

1237. I'm headed to Jerusalem to

  1238. die, right?

1239. And that prompts a thought

  1240. for Jesus.

  1241. Jerusalem.

1242. The city at the center of

  1243. God's people, Israel.

  1244. Verse 34, oh, Jerusalem.

  1245. Jerusalem, the city that

  1246. kills the prophets and

1247. stones the ones who were

  1248. sent to it.

1249. How often would I have

  1250. gathered your children

1251. together as a hen gathers

1252. her brood under her wings

  1253. and you would not.

  1254. Behold, your house is

  1255. forsaken.

1256. And I tell you, you will

1257. not see me until you say,

1258. blessed is he who comes

1259. in the name of the Lord.

1260. There will come a time

  1261. later when the Jews

  1262. embrace the Messiah.

1263. But as Jesus heads to the

1264. cross, he grieves for the

1265. people of God as he

1266. considers how many of them

  1267. are actually rejecting

  1268. God.

1269. His heart is for associates

  1270. and participants in God's

  1271. kingdom, right?

  1272. Oh, Jerusalem, Jerusalem,

1273. how often I would have

1274. gathered you as a hen

  1275. gathers her chicks.

  1276. You've been hanging

1277. around me, but I long

1278. to gather you into myself

1279. because it breaks my heart

1280. to see you left out.

1281. It's the heart of Jesus

  1282. for those not actively

  1283. trusting him.

  1284. It breaks his heart.

  1285. In Matthew's gospel,

1286. when he says these words,

1287. we're told Jesus is weeping

  1288. over Jerusalem.

1289. By the way, is that your

  1290. heart?

1291. For those of you who know

1292. Jesus but know others who

1293. don't, is that your heart

  1294. for them?

1295. Do you weep more than you

  1296. scold?

1297. Do you grieve out of love

1298. for them more than you

1299. lecture out of pride over

  1300. them?

  1301. Are you truly heartbroken

1302. for them or are you

  1303. truly angry at them?

  1304. Whether they are Hindus

  1305. in India, atheists in

  1306. Ireland, nominal Presbyterians

  1307. in Huntsville, do you

1308. truly long for them to be

  1309. gathered to Jesus?

  1310. Jesus does.

1311. He wants them and me

1312. and you gathered to the

  1313. one place of salvation.

  1314. It's a picture of safety

  1315. and refuge and rest,

  1316. isn't it?

1317. Get that picture in your

  1318. head?

1319. It's the one Jesus gives

  1320. us.

1321. It's one used warmly for

  1322. God's loving protection

  1323. throughout the Bible.

1324. But I've got to be honest

  1325. with you, it's not such a

  1326. cute, warm and fuzzy

  1327. picture in this passage.

1328. The context here is one

  1329. of eternal danger.

  1330. And Jesus' death, that's

  1331. what he's talking about

  1332. that he's going to

  1333. Jerusalem for.

1334. So when Jesus talks about

  1335. gathering us under his

  1336. wings like a hen, we've

1337. got to realize that the

  1338. picture is a gruesome

  1339. reality for the hen.

  1340. Hens gather their chicks

  1341. under their wings when

  1342. there's danger nearby.

1343. It could be a fox like

  1344. Herod.

  1345. Possibly freezing cold

  1346. weather.

1347. Maybe a fire in the barn.

1348. And the hen rushes to

  1349. gather her chicks.

1350. While the hen could easily

  1351. fly away from danger

1352. herself, she will stay and

  1353. endure the pain.

  1354. Even at times sacrificing

  1355. her own life.

1356. To save the chicks who

  1357. stay safe, protected beneath

  1358. her wings.

  1359. That's the painful picture.

1360. But beautiful picture of our

1361. Savior who endures the pain

1362. of sin's curse on the cross.

1363. That we might be safe.

  1364. Protected under his wings.

1365. So of course he grieves

1366. when some of God's people

  1367. are unwilling to be

  1368. gathered to safety.

1369. Are you willing to be

  1370. gathered under Jesus'

  1371. protection?

  1372. I didn't ask, are you

1373. willing to play church to

  1374. make your spouse happy?

1375. Or would you rather be

  1376. associated with Christians

  1377. than any other religion?

  1378. Christian?

1379. My heart for all of you,

1380. I think most of you know

  1381. I love you a lot.

1382. And for all of you who are

1383. here and spend any time

1384. with us, my heart, I want

1385. you to be in with me.

1386. Now and in this life, but

  1387. especially forever.

1388. That we would together know

1389. that kind of refuge of safety

1390. and joy, resting with Jesus

  1391. and serving and enjoying

  1392. him forever.

1393. And there's only one way in.

1394. To experience the grace of God.

1395. To despair of your own

  1396. qualifications and actively

  1397. embrace Jesus.

1398. To run under the loving

1399. wings of Jesus for refuge

  1400. and rest.

  1401. That's why I'm always talking

  1402. to you about Jesus.

  1403. Jesus.

1404. Because he's the only one.

1405. The only way that we find

1406. a true relationship with God.

  1407. True participation in his

  1408. kingdom.

1409. Listen, if you're just here

1410. to make someone else happy.

1411. Just to get your kids

  1412. some good morals.

1413. Just to hang out with

  1414. some nice friends.

  1415. As Derek said earlier,

  1416. I'm really glad you're here.

1417. I'm not trying to run you

  1418. off at all.

1419. But I want to love you

  1420. enough to offer you

  1421. the only hope

1422. that any of us has.

  1423. To plead with you

  1424. to receive the forgiveness

  1425. and freedom

  1426. and joy

  1427. of Jesus.

1428. He wants to gather you in

  1429. under his wings.

1430. How tragic it would be

1431. to have spent so much time

1432. around the things of God

1433. and the people of God

1434. and then to spend eternity

  1435. apart from him.

1436. I want so much more

  1437. than that for you.

  1438. Don't be deceived

  1439. by good feelings

  1440. of association.

  1441. Don't assume the door

  1442. remains open forever.

  1443. Don't conclude

1444. that it is no big deal

  1445. where you stand.

  1446. Jesus longs to gather

  1447. all people in.

  1448. Come to him.

  1449. Trust him.

  1450. Today.

  1451. Let's pray.

  1452. Jesus, we hear that

  1453. in your voice

1454. even as it was sung

  1455. over us earlier.

  1456. How often I've longed

  1457. to gather you

  1458. beneath my gentle wings.

  1459. Jesus, you longed

1460. to do that so much

1461. that you gave your life

  1462. for us.

  1463. that you covered us

  1464. even as the blows

  1465. of the cross

  1466. and the nails

  1467. pierced you.

  1468. You stayed

  1469. because you love us.

1470. And so you call us

  1471. into that relationship

  1472. and Jesus,

1473. as you call young people

  1474. and older people

  1475. and people who've never

  1476. been to church

  1477. and people who've never

  1478. missed a Sunday

  1479. to yourself.

1480. Would we hear your voice

  1481. and come and find

  1482. rest and refuge?

  1483. Do your work,

  1484. Holy Spirit,

  1485. in our hearts

1486. for the glory of Jesus

1487. and for our eternal good.

1488. We ask in Jesus' name.

  1489. Amen.
