  1. You are listening to a message from Southwood Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama.

  2. Our passion is to experience and express grace.

  3. Join us.

  4. Turn with me, if you will, this morning to Luke 16, Luke chapter 16.

    Luke 16 chapter mention

  5. Last week we finished up looking at one of the most beloved parables in all the Bible,

  6. the story of the prodigal son.

  7. And this week we turned the page to find another parable, but let's just say that it's a little

  8. less beloved parable by most people.

  9. This is a hard one.

  10. It's a hard parable on actually two levels.

  11. First, just understanding what Jesus means in this story.

  12. It's the parable of the dishonest manager.

  13. And yet the dishonest manager is commended?

  14. What's up with that?

  15. What does Jesus mean?

  16. What does He not mean?

  17. But then, on another level, once we do understand it, it's hard for us because it challenges our

  18. hearts in ways that for many of us we'd just rather avoid.

  19. Chapter 16 talks a lot about money issues, rich and poor.

  20. But it does so not merely to talk about money, but really to address our hearts.

  21. It's difficult.

  22. Now, we must always listen to God's Word, every part of it.

  23. But this week in particular, as I've been studying and praying for this, I feel like God has been

  24. saying, I must really listen to this.

  25. We really need to listen to this.

  26. We have this tendency, I think, when we hear God start talking about money to shut down here.

  27. But Jesus keeps bringing it up.

  28. So let's listen to God's Word and then together ask His Spirit to give us tender hearts, to mold our hearts the way He wants to this morning.

  29. This is Luke 16 at verse 1.

  30. He also said to the disciples,

  31. There was a rich man who had a manager, and charges were brought to him that this man was wasting his possessions.

  32. And He called him and said to him,

  33. What is this that I hear about you?

  34. Turn in the account of your management, for you cannot be the manager any longer.

  35. And the manager said to himself,

  36. What shall I do since my master is taking the management away from me?

  37. I'm not strong enough to dig, and I'm ashamed to beg.

  38. I've decided what to do so that when I am removed from management, people may receive me into their houses.

  39. So, summoning his master's debtors one by one, he said to the first,

  40. How much do you owe my master?

  41. He said, A hundred measures of oil.

  42. He said to him, Take your bill, sit down quickly, and write fifty.

  43. Then he said to another,

  44. And how much do you owe?

  45. He said, A hundred measures of wheat.

  46. And he said to him, Take your bill and write eighty.

  47. The master commended the dishonest manager for his shrewdness.

  48. For the sons of this world are more shrewd in dealing with their own generation than the sons of light.

  49. And I tell you, make friends for yourselves by means of unrighteous wealth,

  50. so that when it fails, they may receive you into the eternal dwellings.

  51. One who is faithful in a very little is also faithful in much,

  52. and one who is dishonest in a very little is also dishonest in much.

  53. If then you have not been faithful in the unrighteous wealth,

  54. who will entrust to you the true riches?

  55. And if you have not been faithful in that which is another's,

  56. who will give you that which is your own?

  57. No servant can serve two masters,

  58. for either he will hate the one and love the other,

  59. or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other.

  60. You cannot serve God and money.

  61. This is God's holy, inerrant, infallible, eternal word.

  62. Let's pray and ask him to help us as we look at it.

  63. Father, we are here this morning

  64. to place ourselves under your word.

  65. So Holy Spirit, as we look at it,

  66. as we seek to understand,

  67. as we struggle to obey,

  68. would you break us?

  69. Would you shape us?

  70. Would you inspire us,

  71. even inflame our hearts with passion and zeal for you and your kingdom?

  72. Do that work in each of us,

  73. and together as a group,

  74. for the sake of Jesus, we pray.

  75. Amen.

  76. Proverbial wisdom tells us that money can't buy happiness, right?

  77. But for decades, people have offered other reminders.

  78. Money can't buy you happiness,

  79. but it can buy you coffee.

  80. Which is kind of the same thing.

  81. Whoever said money can't buy happiness

  82. simply didn't know where to go shopping,

  83. Bo Derek once said.

  84. You can't buy happiness,

  85. but you can buy a plane ticket,

  86. which is kind of the same thing.

  87. See, there's a lot of things

  88. that you can get really close, right?

  89. What else?

  90. Oh yeah, money, not happiness,

  91. but it's much more comfortable

  92. to cry in a Lamborghini than on a bicycle.

  93. You can't buy happiness,

  94. but real estate?

  95. That's just pretty close, right?

  96. And my personal favorite,

  97. you can't buy happiness,

  98. but you can buy donuts.

  99. And there is the real answer.

  100. Donuts, therein is happiness.

  101. All of these things,

  102. that people use this regularly in advertising, right?

  103. Your money can't buy you happiness,

  104. can't buy you love,

  105. whatever it happens to be,

  106. but don't get down,

  107. don't get discouraged.

  108. We chuckle at these,

  109. but there's a lot of truth

  110. in what they show us

  111. about our hearts, isn't there?

  112. I would say most American Christians

  113. are functioning with this mindset.

  114. The mindset that money can't buy happiness,

  115. but we pursue it.

  116. We cling to it.

  117. We think about it as if it can bring us happiness.

  118. We're seeking to serve God,

  119. but we're trying to serve money at the same time,

  120. which this passage tells us

  121. in no uncertain terms

  122. means we are not serving God at all.

  123. Yikes!

  124. And that can happen regardless

  125. of how much money we have.

  126. Whether we are clipping coupons

  127. or buying real estate,

  128. our hearts can start to grasp at money

  129. and the seeming safety,

  130. security, pleasure, control,

  131. whatever it is that it appears to offer us.

  132. And money may not buy us happiness,

  133. but I think it is pretty good

  134. at showing us where we think

  135. happiness is found, isn't it?

  136. It does that real well.

  137. We use it to get what we value.

  138. That may be donuts.

  139. It may be clothes.

  140. It may be education.

  141. It may be an organization or mission

  142. that you believe in and support.

  143. But the title of this sermon

  144. is actually kind of silly.

  145. No one has to tell you

  146. to put your money where your heart is.

  147. You already do.

  148. We all do.

  149. That's why as Jesus talks to us

  150. about money,

  151. and actually it really is about

  152. all our earthly possessions

  153. and time and energy,

  154. that's what He's talking about.

  155. He's actually pushing towards our hearts.

  156. Let's see how He does that.

  157. Let's talk about the parable

  158. for just a minute.

  159. When you're studying parables,

  160. it's helpful to remember

  161. that they usually have

  162. one primary point or meaning.

  163. Don't look for hidden messages

  164. under every stone

  165. unless Jesus tells us to do so.

  166. Let's review what happens in the parable

  167. and then see how Jesus helps us

  168. with the main point.

  169. This manager has been entrusted

  170. to steward all his master's possessions, right?

  171. He's the guy who's been put in charge

  172. and he's been mismanaging,

  173. probably skimming off the top

  174. for himself among other things.

  175. And so he's fired.

  176. There's no questions asked.

  177. He's done,

  178. but he's given a little bit of time

  179. to update the accounts

  180. and bring them up to speed

  181. to turn them in before he walks off.

  182. So he's stuck, right?

  183. His job,

  184. his influence,

  185. his source of well-being,

  186. they're all disappearing quickly.

  187. Now caring for himself

  188. is this manager's top priority, right?

  189. He feels that he can't do that well

  190. by manual labor for whatever reason

  191. or by begging.

  192. So he hatches a plan.

  193. He's got this idea

  194. of how he can take care of himself.

  195. Jesus doesn't tell us for sure,

  196. but probably what's happening here

  197. is Jews were not allowed by law

  198. to charge interest to other Jews.

  199. And so what many people did

  200. to get around that law

  201. was work an extra fee

  202. into the original bill.

  203. Unethical,

  204. but on the razor's edge of illegal.

  205. Basically everyone did it.

  206. And the manager

  207. goes to some of these wealthy clients

  208. and he lowers their debts

  209. probably by that kind of interest-added amount

  210. that would have been worked in.

  211. And so two things happen.

  212. What happens there?

  213. His master can't punish him further

  214. without exposing himself

  215. for these unethical practices, right?

  216. But secondly,

  217. he's made some new friends.

  218. He's got people

  219. who might want to help him out,

  220. give him a job,

  221. a meal,

  222. a bed to sleep in

  223. when he loses his

  224. and has nowhere else to go.

  225. In his future,

  226. he's going to be taken care of.

  227. What a great plan.

  228. Even his master says,

  229. pretty sharp, man.

  230. Good thinking.

  231. I didn't see that one coming.

  232. He commends his shrewdness.

  233. Verse 8.

  234. Now that word for shrewdness,

  235. when we say shrewd,

  236. usually means conniving, right?

  237. Less than ethical,

  238. which does fit here.

  239. But it really means

  240. wisely preparing or investing.

  241. In other words,

  242. carefully prioritizing

  243. what one deems valuable or important.

  244. It's used in parables often.

  245. For instance,

  246. the wise man who built his house where?

  247. On a rock.

  248. It was a shrewd,

  249. a wise decision.

  250. In other parables,

  251. for people being properly prepared

  252. for the coming of Jesus.

  253. So the point of this parable

  254. is not to say

  255. the ends justify the means

  256. or be dishonest

  257. as long as you make more money.

  258. No, no, no kids.

  259. No.

  260. The primary point of the parable is

  261. it is wise and commendable

  262. to use things of fading value

  263. toward things of longer lasting value.

  264. The manager's money and position

  265. were fading, right?

  266. And he shrewdly,

  267. wisely,

  268. used them to secure something

  269. with ongoing value to him.

  270. In this case,

  271. his own protection

  272. and provision.

  273. Now Jesus has been teaching us

  274. all through this section

  275. as we've walked through

  276. the Gospel of Luke

  277. about the kingdom of God, right?

  278. About the immense value

  279. of the kingdom.

  280. About its lasting value.

  281. In fact,

  282. its eternal value.

  283. So Jesus is not going

  284. to commend honesty.

  285. Neither is he going to say,

  286. look out for number one.

  287. The manager's got his priorities straight.

  288. That's exactly what

  289. your priorities should be.

  290. No.

  291. He says this,

  292. verse 9,

  293. I tell you,

  294. make friends for yourselves

  295. by means of unrighteous wealth

  296. so that when it fails,

  297. as it will,

  298. they may receive you

  299. into the eternal dwellings.

  300. Jesus makes the first

  301. of his points of application

  302. for us.

  303. Invest eternally

  304. in what truly lasts.

  305. Friends,

  306. welcoming you into homes

  307. is only a picture

  308. of being welcomed by God

  309. into an eternal home.

  310. An everlasting kingdom.

  311. Jesus says his followers

  312. could learn some things

  313. from the people of the world,

  314. right?

  315. About how this principle

  316. works out.

  317. Again,

  318. he's not commending

  319. the methods

  320. or the ultimate values,

  321. but rather the consistent

  322. strategic thinking

  323. of the world.

  324. Verse 8,

  325. the sons of this world

  326. are more shrewd

  327. in dealing with

  328. their own generation

  329. than the sons of light.

  330. What's Jesus saying?

  331. He's saying,

  332. why do the children

  333. of God fail to invest

  334. in what they believe

  335. is truly valuable?

  336. Everyone else seems

  337. to do that pretty consistently.

  338. They figure out

  339. what their priorities are

  340. and they work towards them.

  341. They invest in them.

  342. We say the thing

  343. that we want most

  344. to see happen

  345. is the kingdom of God

  346. advanced in this world,

  347. right?

  348. For people to come

  349. to know King Jesus,

  350. for Huntsville

  351. to experience

  352. the flourishing

  353. of justice and mercy,

  354. for the nations

  355. to be transformed

  356. by the power

  357. of the gospel of grace.

  358. That's what we say

  359. is most valuable.

  360. But do we invest

  361. in that

  362. like it's most valuable?

  363. Do we employ

  364. all the wisdom

  365. and skill

  366. God has given us

  367. toward kingdom ends?

  368. The manager used

  369. everything at his disposal,

  370. right?

  371. To pursue

  372. what was most valuable

  373. to him.

  374. Jesus says

  375. to his followers,

  376. you've got a kingdom

  377. that really lasts,

  378. that is most valuable.

  379. Use everything

  380. at your disposal

  381. to pursue it.

  382. Pastor Ross Lester

  383. encourages us

  384. to think of our money

  385. specifically

  386. as mission ammunition.

  387. I like that.

  388. Ammunition

  389. for God's mission

  390. in the world

  391. that we can use,

  392. he says,

  393. to blow holes

  394. in the gates

  395. of hell.

  396. I really like that.

  397. That's good.

  398. When you worship God

  399. through giving

  400. this morning,

  401. you didn't just

  402. check a box,

  403. fulfill an obligation,

  404. make a charitable donation

  405. for tax purposes.

  406. You blew a hole

  407. in the gates

  408. of hell

  409. in Huntsville.

  410. You blasted

  411. through the gates

  412. of hell

  413. in India.

  414. that's how you

  415. invested

  416. the resources

  417. God had given

  418. to you.

  419. But it's not simply

  420. about our money,

  421. is it?

  422. I mean,

  423. it's not less

  424. than that,

  425. but it's so much

  426. more.

  427. Verse 9 again,

  428. I tell you,

  429. make friends for

  430. yourselves

  431. by means of

  432. unrighteous wealth.

  433. That word there

  434. that's translated

  435. unrighteous wealth

  436. sometimes translated

  437. money like in

  438. verse 13.

  439. It's the word

  440. mammon.

  441. It doesn't mean

  442. wealth that you

  443. got by dishonest

  444. dealings.

  445. That's not the idea.

  446. It's a general term

  447. speaking of

  448. all your earthly

  449. possessions,

  450. all your worldly

  451. wealth,

  452. all the resources

  453. you have in this

  454. world.

  455. Jesus is saying

  456. use those

  457. for eternal

  458. purposes.

  459. Use everything

  460. you have

  461. to pursue

  462. things

  463. that last.

  464. The manager

  465. used his position,

  466. his connections.

  467. Invest your time

  468. to pursue

  469. the eternal

  470. souls of

  471. men and women.

  472. Invest your

  473. relationships

  474. to see

  475. God's kingdom

  476. come in

  477. Huntsville.

  478. Invest your

  479. vacation time

  480. to love

  481. the least of

  482. these.

  483. Invest your

  484. homes to

  485. help people

  486. experience

  487. the gracious

  488. welcome

  489. of King

  490. Jesus who

  491. gives freely

  492. and generously.

  493. this leads us

  494. to Jesus

  495. next point.

  496. We must

  497. steward

  498. faithfully.

  499. Verse 11

  500. if then you

  501. have not been

  502. faithful in

  503. the unrighteous

  504. wealth and

  505. the mammon

  506. and the earthly

  507. resources who

  508. will entrust to

  509. you the true

  510. riches and

  511. if you've not

  512. been faithful

  513. in that which

  514. is another's who

  515. will give you

  516. that which is

  517. your own.

  518. Jesus says all

  519. those things that

  520. you're to invest

  521. for the eternal

  522. kingdom you must

  523. do it because

  524. they're not

  525. actually yours at

  526. all are they?

  527. You are a

  528. steward that

  529. God has

  530. entrusted to

  531. manage his

  532. resources for

  533. his purposes.

  534. He's telling us

  535. to be faithful

  536. with that which

  537. belongs to

  538. another.

  539. It's his.

  540. That's what a

  541. steward does

  542. right?

  543. Manages what

  544. belongs rightly

  545. to someone

  546. else.

  547. Is that how you

  548. view your money?

  549. Your time?

  550. Your home?

  551. Are they yours

  552. or are they

  553. someone else's?

  554. I read this

  555. week of a man

  556. who bought a

  557. new car only

  558. to have it

  559. crashed into

  560. a couple of

  561. days later

  562. and he

  563. responded,

  564. well God

  565. I don't know

  566. why you want

  567. a dent in

  568. the side of

  569. your new car

  570. but you

  571. certainly have

  572. a big one.

  573. John Wesley

  574. once said

  575. when told his

  576. house was on

  577. fire,

  578. the Lord's

  579. house burned

  580. one less

  581. responsibility

  582. for me.

  583. Now the

  584. triteness of

  585. those comments

  586. can seem to

  587. minimize

  588. genuine

  589. suffering

  590. but

  591. I use them

  592. to the point

  593. of how vital

  594. it is

  595. for us to

  596. have the right

  597. perspective on

  598. who owns

  599. our

  600. stuff.

  601. if everything

  602. we have

  603. is a gift

  604. from God

  605. and it's

  606. merely entrusted

  607. to us

  608. then we must

  609. ask the

  610. question

  611. perhaps different

  612. from the

  613. question we

  614. usually ask

  615. what does

  616. faithful stewardship

  617. of God's

  618. stuff look

  619. like?

  620. Not how do

  621. I want to

  622. use it

  623. but how

  624. would God

  625. want this

  626. used?

  627. That's the

  628. heart behind

  629. the leadership

  630. of our

  631. church as we

  632. consider our

  633. budget each

  634. year and as

  635. we in recent

  636. months wrestled

  637. through pursuing

  638. the sale of the

  639. White House

  640. property.

  641. How would God

  642. want us to

  643. use what He

  644. has entrusted

  645. to us?

  646. And the

  647. principle Jesus

  648. teaches is that

  649. we should be

  650. faithful in the

  651. small things like

  652. money before

  653. being entrusted

  654. with true

  655. riches.

  656. Verse 11

  657. In other words

  658. if we as a

  659. church don't

  660. steward our

  661. money faithfully

  662. for God's

  663. kingdom purposes

  664. pointing all

  665. our money there

  666. why would God

  667. entrust eternal

  668. souls for us

  669. to point them

  670. toward Him and

  671. His kingdom?

  672. If we're not

  673. even pointing our

  674. money in that

  675. direction.

  676. But if we are

  677. oriented toward

  678. His kingdom in

  679. the little things

  680. what a great

  681. pattern that sets

  682. for us when He

  683. entrusts a new

  684. church plant

  685. a new generation

  686. of kids

  687. a new revival

  688. in Huntsville

  689. to us

  690. and we're looking

  691. towards His

  692. kingdom purposes.

  693. God has entrusted

  694. every one of us

  695. in this room

  696. with so much

  697. hasn't He?

  698. Do we long

  699. for more so

  700. that we can

  701. pursue our

  702. dreams of a

  703. better lifestyle

  704. a better situation

  705. for our kids

  706. a better

  707. retirement?

  708. Or are we

  709. willing to say

  710. enough?

  711. God's given me

  712. what I need

  713. and whenever we

  714. see more

  715. we think

  716. kingdom

  717. whenever we get

  718. more we think

  719. others

  720. we think

  721. give it away

  722. and we start

  723. to get excited

  724. as we see God

  725. provide for us

  726. and He does it

  727. so richly

  728. and so generously

  729. and as what

  730. He's given us

  731. grows

  732. we think

  733. of the size

  734. of hole

  735. we're going

  736. to blow

  737. in the gates

  738. of hell

  739. right?

  740. Isn't that

  741. exciting?

  742. Don't you want

  743. to see what

  744. God gives you

  745. that way?

  746. He entrusts to us

  747. so much

  748. and that's the

  749. attitude He's

  750. calling us to.

  751. Martin Luther wrote

  752. we must use

  753. all these things

  754. upon earth

  755. in no other way

  756. than as a guest

  757. who travels

  758. through the land

  759. and comes to a hotel

  760. where he must

  761. lodge overnight.

  762. He takes only food

  763. and lodging

  764. from the host

  765. and He says not

  766. that the property

  767. of the host

  768. belongs to Him

  769. just so

  770. we also

  771. should treat

  772. our temporal

  773. possessions

  774. as if they

  775. were not ours

  776. and enjoy only

  777. so much of them

  778. as we need

  779. to nourish the body

  780. and then help

  781. our neighbors

  782. with the balance.

  783. Thus the life

  784. of the Christian

  785. is only a lodging

  786. for the night

  787. since we have

  788. no continuing city

  789. but must journey

  790. on to heaven

  791. where the Father

  792. is.

  793. Treat our temporal

  794. possessions

  795. as if they were

  796. not ours.

  797. Seems un-American.

  798. Steward them

  799. and why?

  800. Why does He say?

  801. It's because of

  802. what's eternal, right?

  803. We have an eternal city.

  804. Another homeland

  805. where my possessions

  806. lie.

  807. But Jesus has

  808. one more point

  809. and it

  810. presses this

  811. into our hearts.

  812. He does care

  813. how we invest

  814. and steward

  815. our money,

  816. our resources.

  817. But He especially

  818. wants us this morning

  819. to examine our hearts

  820. in light of how we live.

  821. Look at verse 13.

  822. No servant

  823. can serve two masters

  824. for either

  825. he will hate the one

  826. and love the other

  827. or he will be devoted

  828. to the one

  829. and despise the other.

  830. You cannot

  831. serve

  832. God

  833. and money.

  834. You cannot

  835. serve God

  836. and money.

  837. God

  838. and mammon.

  839. Worldly pleasures

  840. and possessions.

  841. Notice

  842. He doesn't

  843. merely say

  844. that you

  845. should not.

  846. You probably

  847. knew that

  848. before you came

  849. this morning, right?

  850. He doesn't say

  851. you should not

  852. serve

  853. God and money.

  854. He says

  855. you cannot

  856. serve both.

  857. They are

  858. mutually

  859. exclusive

  860. masters

  861. because God

  862. demands

  863. wholehearted

  864. worship.

  865. He must

  866. have

  867. the whole

  868. of my heart

  869. or He has

  870. none of it.

  871. that's really

  872. the crux

  873. for many of us

  874. I think

  875. because we would

  876. like to think

  877. that we serve

  878. God,

  879. wouldn't we?

  880. That He's the one

  881. that we most

  882. value.

  883. But if we're honest

  884. we'd also like

  885. to think

  886. that we can

  887. manage

  888. chasing our own

  889. dreams

  890. on the side

  891. or

  892. if we're more

  893. honest

  894. chasing our own

  895. dreams

  896. Monday through

  897. Saturday

  898. which is

  899. more of a main

  900. course than a side

  901. but either way

  902. God says

  903. we

  904. cannot

  905. I've got to

  906. believe there are

  907. a lot of people

  908. sitting in churches

  909. like ours

  910. who are not

  911. serving

  912. God

  913. because they're

  914. serving

  915. mammon

  916. earthly things

  917. or

  918. eternal

  919. things

  920. what do we

  921. talk with our

  922. spouses about

  923. when we

  924. get time

  925. to talk

  926. together

  927. what do we

  928. plan for

  929. schedule around

  930. and

  931. prioritize

  932. with our

  933. time

  934. what purposes

  935. are we working

  936. for during the

  937. week when we're

  938. not in this

  939. building

  940. what are we

  941. most excited

  942. to tell our

  943. friends

  944. or show our

  945. friends

  946. earthly

  947. things

  948. or

  949. eternal

  950. things

  951. whom do our

  952. hearts

  953. worship

  954. see this is

  955. really where

  956. Jesus wants to

  957. go here

  958. isn't it

  959. you thought he

  960. was meddling

  961. when he reached

  962. in and put his

  963. hands on your

  964. wallet

  965. earlier

  966. he wants to

  967. reach through

  968. that

  969. to your

  970. heart

  971. to what you

  972. really value

  973. he wants us

  974. to consider

  975. deeply this

  976. morning who

  977. our God

  978. truly is

  979. who's the

  980. one we

  981. love

  982. whose goals

  983. do we

  984. most pursue

  985. whose

  986. priorities

  987. actually shape

  988. how we

  989. use

  990. resources

  991. you know

  992. we won't

  993. invest our

  994. resources in

  995. something that

  996. our hearts

  997. don't truly

  998. value and

  999. love

  1000. right

  1001. I love to

  1002. listen to

  1003. people who

  1004. love God's

  1005. kingdom

  1006. and have the

  1007. gift of

  1008. generosity

  1009. I love to

  1010. hear them

  1011. just brim

  1012. with excitement

  1013. and joy

  1014. over how

  1015. they were able

  1016. to free up

  1017. some extra

  1018. money to help

  1019. out a seminary

  1020. student in a

  1021. tight spot

  1022. how they were

  1023. able to restructure

  1024. some of their

  1025. assets to make a

  1026. special gift to

  1027. the church

  1028. how they were

  1029. able to

  1030. coordinate some

  1031. friends with

  1032. resources to

  1033. help someone in

  1034. need

  1035. there's this

  1036. joy there

  1037. because they

  1038. know they're

  1039. investing in

  1040. eternity

  1041. they know

  1042. they're stewarding

  1043. what God has

  1044. entrusted to

  1045. them for his

  1046. eternal purposes

  1047. and nothing

  1048. makes them

  1049. more excited

  1050. regardless of

  1051. how many

  1052. digits are in

  1053. your paycheck

  1054. or how many

  1055. dollars are in

  1056. your bank

  1057. account

  1058. would you be

  1059. willing to ask

  1060. yourself some

  1061. hard heart

  1062. questions this

  1063. morning

  1064. do you get

  1065. more joy

  1066. from buying a

  1067. new car

  1068. new clothes

  1069. or

  1070. from supporting

  1071. a global

  1072. mission partner

  1073. do you get

  1074. more joy from

  1075. an evening of

  1076. Netflix

  1077. a Saturday of

  1078. college football

  1079. or

  1080. an afternoon

  1081. spent listening

  1082. to the pains

  1083. of a hurting

  1084. friend and

  1085. praying for

  1086. them

  1087. do you get

  1088. more joy from

  1089. adding on to

  1090. your home

  1091. or having

  1092. neighbors

  1093. in your home

  1094. which

  1095. master

  1096. do you

  1097. serve

  1098. God

  1099. calls us

  1100. to serve

  1101. him

  1102. wholeheartedly

  1103. with every

  1104. dollar

  1105. with every

  1106. minute

  1107. with every

  1108. decision

  1109. why

  1110. because

  1111. his

  1112. kingdom

  1113. lasts

  1114. forever

  1115. one of the

  1116. reasons we

  1117. can't serve

  1118. God and

  1119. money

  1120. is that these

  1121. two masters

  1122. are so entirely

  1123. different

  1124. they promise

  1125. to provide us

  1126. some of the

  1127. same things

  1128. but they do so

  1129. through entirely

  1130. different means

  1131. listen to the

  1132. differences this

  1133. morning as we

  1134. close and

  1135. consider which one

  1136. you want to

  1137. serve

  1138. money says

  1139. you can't buy

  1140. safety and

  1141. security but

  1142. but you can buy

  1143. storm shelters

  1144. education for your

  1145. kids and insurance

  1146. plans and that's

  1147. pretty close

  1148. God says

  1149. safety

  1150. security

  1151. keep your life

  1152. free from love

  1153. of money and be

  1154. content with what

  1155. you have

  1156. for he has

  1157. said

  1158. why

  1159. why

  1160. how

  1161. can we avoid

  1162. the love of

  1163. money

  1164. God has said

  1165. I will never

  1166. leave you

  1167. nor forsake

  1168. you

  1169. so we can

  1170. confidently say

  1171. the Lord is my

  1172. helper

  1173. I will not

  1174. fear

  1175. what can

  1176. man

  1177. do

  1178. to me

  1179. how do you

  1180. pull your

  1181. heart away

  1182. from the love

  1183. of money

  1184. embracing God's

  1185. promise to be

  1186. with you and to

  1187. care for you

  1188. God offers

  1189. himself

  1190. always

  1191. with you

  1192. money says

  1193. the secret

  1194. to being

  1195. fulfilled

  1196. is to work

  1197. hard

  1198. get enough

  1199. sit back

  1200. relax

  1201. and enjoy

  1202. all the

  1203. benefits

  1204. of what

  1205. you've

  1206. worked

  1207. for

  1208. God

  1209. says

  1210. Philippians

    Philippians 4 chapter mention

  1211. chapter 4

  1212. in any

  1213. and every

  1214. circumstance

  1215. I have

  1216. learned the

  1217. secret of

  1218. facing plenty

  1219. and hunger

  1220. abundance

  1221. and need

  1222. I can do

  1223. all things

  1224. through him

  1225. who strengthens

  1226. me

  1227. and my

  1228. God will

  1229. supply all

  1230. your needs

  1231. according to

  1232. his glorious

  1233. riches

  1234. in Christ

  1235. Jesus

  1236. true

  1237. fulfillment

  1238. in him

  1239. money says

  1240. you can't

  1241. buy fame

  1242. and significance

  1243. but

  1244. but if you

  1245. get enough

  1246. of me

  1247. people will

  1248. eventually

  1249. respect you

  1250. and come to

  1251. you for help

  1252. and then you

  1253. will really

  1254. matter

  1255. you'll really

  1256. be somebody

  1257. God says

  1258. the Lord

  1259. is my

  1260. shepherd

  1261. I shall

  1262. not

  1263. want

  1264. I

  1265. shall

  1266. lack

  1267. nothing

  1268. you have

  1269. everything

  1270. you need

  1271. your 401k

  1272. might disappear

  1273. I will make

  1274. you lie down

  1275. in green

  1276. pastures

  1277. your home

  1278. might burn

  1279. you will dwell

  1280. in the house

  1281. of the Lord

  1282. forever

  1283. your body

  1284. may break

  1285. down

  1286. I will

  1287. never

  1288. let you

  1289. down

  1290. I will

  1291. always

  1292. be your

  1293. shepherd

  1294. you

  1295. shall

  1296. lack

  1297. nothing

  1298. which

  1299. master

  1300. do you

  1301. love

  1302. money

  1303. says

  1304. just a

  1305. little

  1306. bit

  1307. more

  1308. God

  1309. says

  1310. Jesus

  1311. paid

  1312. it all

  1313. it is

  1314. finished

  1315. give me

  1316. Jesus

  1317. let's pray

  1318. God

  1319. might we

  1320. see having

  1321. you

  1322. as the

  1323. one we

  1324. serve

  1325. and worship

  1326. as what

  1327. we truly

  1328. need

  1329. you know

  1330. the things

  1331. that turn

  1332. our hearts

  1333. even in

  1334. these moments

  1335. away from

  1336. you

  1337. away from

  1338. seeing you

  1339. as worthy

  1340. and valuable

  1341. and eternal

  1342. Holy Spirit

  1343. would you

  1344. fight for

  1345. our hearts

  1346. would you

  1347. push back

  1348. the evil

  1349. one who

  1350. would bring

  1351. things in

  1352. to kill

  1353. and to

  1354. destroy

  1355. and to

  1356. lie to us

  1357. and make us

  1358. believe there's

  1359. something else

  1360. that we really

  1361. need

  1362. to lie to us

  1363. and make us

  1364. think we can

  1365. have our cake

  1366. and eat it

  1367. too

  1368. we can
