  1. You are listening to a message from Southwood Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama.

  2. Our passion is to experience and express grace.

  3. Join us.

  4. Turn with me this morning to Luke 16, page 875 of the Bible in the pews in front of you.

  5. Last week we heard Jesus address the issue of money, of wealth, in order to get at our hearts,

  6. what we really value, what we really worship.

  7. And that same conversation continues in the rest of Luke 16 today.

  8. As Jesus enters through the door of money, rich and poor, to get at eternal matters of heaven and hell.

  9. Honestly, I've really struggled with this passage this week.

  10. If you have a bulletin, you can see where the outline was when it was time to print the bulletins.

  11. It's a little further along now.

  12. But I've decided that the best way for us to consider this text and its challenges to us

  13. is to walk through it together and to talk about it as we go.

  14. So let's pray and ask God to help all of us in that.

  15. And then we'll read the passage as we walk through it.

  16. Pray with me.

  17. God, this is your word.

  18. God, and I'm so grateful for that.

  19. It reminds me that you want us to hear it.

  20. That you want us to be shaped by it.

  21. That your spirit will use it.

  22. And so, Father, keep teaching me this morning.

  23. And would you be so kind to us as to use the foolishness of what is preached

  24. to bring eternal light and hope and life to us

  25. because of your great mercy and grace.

  26. We ask it in Jesus' name.

  27. Amen.

  28. So last week, we finished up with verse 13.

  29. You cannot serve God and money.

  30. What you value and love is of utmost importance.

  31. Is it the things of God or the things of this world?

  32. It can't be both.

  33. And as we turn to verse 14, we find some listening to Jesus

  34. who were told explicitly, love money.

  35. The Pharisees, who were lovers of money,

  36. heard all these things and they ridiculed Jesus.

  37. The Pharisees, the religious leaders, the ones who were teaching others,

  38. they ridiculed Jesus.

  39. They mock Him, which we'll find out in a minute is not really a good idea.

  40. But why?

  41. Why are they ridiculing Jesus?

  42. Well, they loved money, the text tells us.

  43. And they saw no problem with this.

  44. All of the teaching at the time was telling them

  45. that that was a reasonable thing to do.

  46. Financial prosperity and wealth was a sign of God's blessing.

  47. Poverty was viewed as a punishment from God.

  48. And here's Jesus saying, these two things don't go together.

  49. Well, you can't chase both of them at the same time.

  50. And they laugh.

  51. No way, Jesus.

  52. Now we know you've lost it.

  53. We're plenty holy here and God's keeping the money coming right in.

  54. It's the poor guy you ought to be suspicious of.

  55. This guy's way off.

  56. I think this attitude is more true in our hearts than we would care to admit.

  57. The health and wealth gospel is exploding here and around the world,

  58. becoming increasingly popular.

  59. And even though many of us would say we don't hold to some of its assertions,

  60. we're drawn to read a book by a slick-talking, good-looking, successful, well-marketed Christian leader, aren't we?

  61. Certainly he must know something.

  62. Successful as he is.

  63. Try this for just a minute.

  64. Picture for me in your minds just an average Christian guy.

  65. Just picture one.

  66. See if you can just picture a Christian in your head.

  67. I'm willing to bet that for most of us, the image we get in our heads is white,

  68. somewhat upper-middle class, well-mannered, well-spoken.

  69. For most of us, that is what pops into our minds when I tell you to picture a Christian.

  70. But most Christians today are, and through history, far from affluent.

  71. And most suffer greatly.

  72. You probably think if you went to Chick-fil-A tomorrow, because you can't go today,

  73. but if you went tomorrow, you could hang out for about five minutes

  74. and pretty much kind of pick out who the Christians are.

  75. You know, if you hang around people for just a little while, you can figure that out.

  76. Just watching, right?

  77. It's the ones who say, my pleasure.

  78. That's always the ones to be looking for.

  79. But we need to caution ourselves when we think that way.

  80. Mere outward appearances are often misleading, aren't they?

  81. See, Jesus is going to upend these expectations

  82. and particularly challenge the Pharisees and us on our outward righteousness.

  83. Verse 15.

  84. He said to them, to the Pharisees, Jesus says,

  85. You are those who justify yourselves before men, but God knows your hearts.

  86. For what is exalted among men is an abomination in the sight of God.

  87. You like to look good, to appear religious, to have people think well of you,

  88. but you're not fooling God, Jesus says.

  89. Your external law-keeping righteousness without regard for your heart,

  90. for deeply loving God may be praised by others,

  91. but it's abominable to God.

  92. And he continues.

  93. The law and the prophets were until John.

  94. Since then, the good news of the kingdom of God is preached,

  95. and everyone forces his way into it.

  96. But it is easier for heaven and earth to pass away

  97. than for one dot of the law to become void.

  98. Yes, the Messiah has come, and that changes things, Jesus is saying.

  99. But the law stays.

  100. In fact, elsewhere, what does Jesus say about the law?

  101. That he has come not to abolish it, but to fulfill it.

  102. It's an unchanging picture of God's character,

  103. and it exposes our hearts, doesn't it?

  104. To call us back to his heart.

  105. It shows us God's heart, and it shows us ours,

  106. where ours doesn't look like God's,

  107. to call us back to that heart.

  108. Jesus' point here is that the Pharisees,

  109. who pride themselves on keeping the law,

  110. actually are neglecting it.

  111. The Pharisees, who think they are experts on God's heart,

  112. are actually missing it altogether.

  113. Instead of listening to God's word and clearly letting it do what it's supposed to do,

  114. expose them and shape them,

  115. show them where their hearts are misguided,

  116. instead of doing that, they've lowered the bar

  117. to a place they can reach,

  118. so they can feel good about themselves,

  119. so they can look good to others.

  120. Jesus says that's so dangerous.

  121. God hates it.

  122. And Jesus says that in the context of how they pursue money

  123. and neglect the poor.

  124. They're failing to take his word seriously,

  125. and when we do that, it's actually a rejection of God himself.

  126. This is what he will talk about at length in the parable that's coming up here.

  127. But first, he gives another quick example,

  128. a one-verse example before he gives a ten-verse example.

  129. And it may seem out of place here, verse 18,

  130. everyone who divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery,

  131. and he who marries a woman divorced from her husband commits adultery.

  132. What's Jesus saying?

  133. Where does that show up?

  134. Well, the Pharisees over time had written law codes,

  135. many of them lengthy codes,

  136. with reasons for divorce

  137. that basically meant that men could get a divorce,

  138. get out of their marriages,

  139. for just about any reason at all.

  140. And Jesus is making the point

  141. that the law of God in his word still stands.

  142. This issue of divorce is a significant one

  143. and a sensitive one in our own context, right?

  144. So I actually want us, after Easter,

  145. to come back to this verse

  146. and just talk a little bit more about what it means for us

  147. and how our hearts engage with God's law in that regard.

  148. So we'll do that in a couple of weeks.

  149. But for the context of this passage,

  150. what Jesus is saying is that

  151. he's giving the Pharisees an example

  152. of how they're lowering the standard of God's law

  153. in order to keep it from exposing their hearts,

  154. exposing them as frauds, as sinners,

  155. as those who are needy.

  156. Jesus is emphasizing the seriousness of God's word.

  157. And there are several things in this passage

  158. he's urging us to take seriously,

  159. and this is the first,

  160. it's God's word.

  161. It's call on our lives.

  162. So he said that briefly with regard to divorce.

  163. You need to take God's word seriously.

  164. But now he's going to tell a story

  165. to make the same point with regard to rich and poor.

  166. Tracking with me?

  167. This is example two now for Jesus engaging their hearts.

  168. He's going to tell a story to expose the Pharisees' hearts

  169. and our hearts.

  170. This parable we're about to read,

  171. the story of the rich man and Lazarus,

  172. is going to remind us primarily

  173. that our response to God and his word,

  174. in this case particularly with regard to money,

  175. has eternal consequences.

  176. Remember, this is a story Jesus tells

  177. to engage our hearts with that particular point.

  178. He's not recounting historical events,

  179. historical details.

  180. He's teaching our hearts important lessons

  181. through a story to engage our hearts, right?

  182. You do that with stories.

  183. Jesus is telling this story to engage our hearts

  184. and to teach us these important things.

  185. Listen to the first part of the parable.

  186. It starts at verse 19.

  187. There was a rich man who was clothed in purple

  188. and fine linen and who feasted sumptuously every day.

  189. And at his gate was laid a poor man named Lazarus

  190. covered with sores

  191. who desired to be fed with what fell

  192. from the rich man's table.

  193. Moreover, even the dogs came and licked his sores.

  194. The poor man died and was carried by the angels

  195. to Abraham's side.

  196. The rich man also died and was buried

  197. and in Hades, being in torment,

  198. he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham far off

  199. and Lazarus at his side.

  200. And he called out,

  201. Father Abraham, have mercy on me

  202. and send Lazarus to dip the end of his finger in water

  203. and cool my tongue

  204. for I'm in anguish in this flame.

  205. But Abraham said,

  206. Child, remember that you in your lifetime

  207. received your good things

  208. and Lazarus in like manner bad things.

  209. But now he is comforted here

  210. and you are in anguish.

  211. And besides all this,

  212. between us and you,

  213. a great chasm has been fixed

  214. in order that those who would pass from here to you

  215. may not be able

  216. and none may cross from there to us.

  217. Perhaps the most obvious aspect of this story

  218. is the remarkable study and contrasts, right?

  219. These two men, very different.

  220. This first one's not merely a man who is rich,

  221. but he is lavishly rich

  222. and he feels it.

  223. Enjoying fine food

  224. and clothes fit for a king all the time.

  225. And right outside his front door

  226. where he would pass by all the time

  227. is not merely a man who is poor,

  228. but he is devastatingly poor.

  229. And he feels it.

  230. The aching hunger that longs for any scraps.

  231. The bread they would use

  232. to scoop up the other food that they were eating.

  233. He just wants that

  234. or the crumbs from their table.

  235. He's so hungry.

  236. The sharp pain of wounds

  237. being licked by wild dogs

  238. that roam the streets of the city.

  239. The humiliating reality

  240. of not being able to fend for himself.

  241. Two very different men, right?

  242. But they both die

  243. as we all do eventually.

  244. And there's a great role reversal

  245. that happens there, isn't there?

  246. Jesus flips the script upside down

  247. when he gives us a glimpse into eternity.

  248. Things are very different.

  249. First, Lazarus, the poor man, dies

  250. and perhaps no one cares.

  251. There's no mention even of a burial.

  252. We would expect here in Jesus' time

  253. to hear of public officials

  254. tossing his body in a cart,

  255. taking it outside the city to Gehenna,

  256. the waste dump to dispose of it.

  257. But actually, instead,

  258. we get a window into God's heart

  259. for the poor whom he loves.

  260. Jesus says he was carried by angels

  261. to Abraham's side.

  262. Don't you love that?

  263. So far from being cursed or despised by God

  264. or even just ignored or overlooked by heaven,

  265. Lazarus is cherished and beloved

  266. by the hosts of heaven.

  267. He went from a seat of dishonor

  268. to a place of high honor in heaven,

  269. close to the heart of Father Abraham.

  270. He went from discomfort to comfort.

  271. He went from deep suffering to great glory.

  272. Don't you love God's heart

  273. for the poor and the suffering?

  274. Is it any wonder that many slaves

  275. in this country years ago

  276. began to sing a song?

  277. I remember loving it as a child.

  278. Swing low, sweet chariot,

  279. coming for to carry me home.

  280. I looked over Jordan and what did I see?

  281. Coming for to carry me home.

  282. A band of angels coming after me.

  283. Coming for to carry me home.

  284. I love that.

  285. Because their hope

  286. and their home

  287. was in heaven.

  288. Never home here.

  289. Never comfortable here.

  290. Never honored here.

  291. But Jesus says,

  292. don't miss God's heart

  293. and think that despised in this world

  294. means despised in heaven.

  295. No, that's not what it's like.

  296. Angels come and carry him

  297. and place him against Abraham's chest

  298. so he can rest.

  299. If you're poor,

  300. if you're suffering,

  301. if you're aching with emptiness

  302. here in this world,

  303. I've got good news.

  304. If you trust Jesus,

  305. you're not home yet.

  306. And he will honor you

  307. and comfort you

  308. and fulfill you

  309. forever.

  310. And you'll be home.

  311. But then the rich man,

  312. too,

  313. dies,

  314. doesn't he?

  315. It's not quite such a warm story.

  316. He, of course,

  317. is buried,

  318. likely as lavishly

  319. as he lived,

  320. but then the reversal

  321. of fortunes

  322. is equally stark.

  323. Tormented

  324. in hell,

  325. not heaven.

  326. in great anguish,

  327. not comforted at all.

  328. Far off

  329. from Abraham,

  330. distant from the one

  331. he thought he was close to,

  332. not at his side.

  333. Pleading for a drop

  334. of water

  335. from one

  336. whose name

  337. he knows,

  338. Lazarus,

  339. send Lazarus,

  340. but whom he never

  341. apparently gave

  342. a crumb of bread to.

  343. It's a heart-wrenching

  344. picture,

  345. isn't it?

  346. It should be.

  347. He's reminded

  348. by Abraham

  349. that he received

  350. his good things

  351. on earth.

  352. Lots of them,

  353. right?

  354. Lots of good things.

  355. That's where he

  356. invested his treasure.

  357. It reminds me

  358. of all those passages

  359. about doing things

  360. for the praise of men

  361. and being told

  362. that we've received

  363. our reward

  364. in full

  365. here.

  366. Now,

  367. there's no relief.

  368. It's too late

  369. to change his station.

  370. He has neglected

  371. God's heart

  372. and he endures

  373. torment

  374. and anguish.

  375. If we were watching

  376. a video of this scene,

  377. I think we would

  378. turn our eyes away.

  379. hell is hard

  380. to stomach

  381. for all of us,

  382. isn't it?

  383. In fact,

  384. our grasp

  385. of God's

  386. utter holiness

  387. and our

  388. wretched

  389. sinfulness

  390. is so limited

  391. that for us,

  392. because of that,

  393. hell's hard

  394. to believe in.

  395. while we would

  396. be misunderstanding

  397. a parable

  398. like this

  399. to suggest

  400. that Jesus

  401. is giving us

  402. a detailed map

  403. of heaven

  404. and hell

  405. and how all

  406. of this works,

  407. it's not at all

  408. going too far

  409. to see the clear

  410. reminder of the

  411. reality

  412. of both heaven

  413. and,

  414. in particular,

  415. hell.

  416. The torment

  417. of hell

  418. without which

  419. this story

  420. Jesus tells

  421. makes no sense.

  422. The permanence

  423. of hell

  424. in this

  425. great chasm

  426. that separates

  427. people who can't

  428. go back

  429. and forth.

  430. Jesus affirms

  431. these teachings

  432. in many other

  433. places

  434. and we dare

  435. not ignore

  436. them.

  437. It's a warning,

  438. isn't it?

  439. That's why

  440. he's teaching

  441. this parable.

  442. It's a warning

  443. for hearts

  444. that love

  445. money,

  446. for hearts

  447. that take

  448. God's law

  449. lightly,

  450. for hearts

  451. that have

  452. a hard time

  453. imagining

  454. a loving

  455. God

  456. punishing

  457. sin.

  458. It's a warning

  459. that we must

  460. heed God's

  461. word.

  462. We should

  463. take God's

  464. word seriously

  465. and Jesus

  466. is urging

  467. us now

  468. to take

  469. eternity

  470. seriously.

  471. Don't delay

  472. until it's

  473. too late

  474. to wrestle

  475. with matters

  476. of eternity

  477. like it was

  478. for the rich

  479. man.

  480. Is the

  481. seriousness

  482. of eternity

  483. grabbing your

  484. heart

  485. for yourself?

  486. What about

  487. for the

  488. sake of

  489. others?

  490. Do you

  491. speak of

  492. eternity

  493. with them

  494. and plead

  495. with them

  496. as though

  497. heaven and

  498. hell were

  499. real places?

  500. And once

  501. we die

  502. it's too

  503. late to

  504. change

  505. reservations

  506. and switch

  507. across the

  508. chasm.

  509. I think

  510. for many

  511. of us

  512. it's hard

  513. to imagine

  514. ourselves

  515. or our

  516. friends and

  517. neighbors who

  518. are really

  519. decent people

  520. suffering

  521. torment in

  522. hell.

  523. Can we

  524. acknowledge

  525. that?

  526. It's just

  527. not where

  528. we picture

  529. people who

  530. look and

  531. talk and

  532. act very

  533. much like

  534. us.

  535. It doesn't

  536. seem to

  537. fit.

  538. We're decent

  539. people,

  540. upstanding

  541. citizens,

  542. better than

  543. many others,

  544. pretty accomplished

  545. and successful

  546. in general,

  547. and Jesus

  548. says that's

  549. what I'm

  550. warning you

  551. about.

  552. It's

  553. tempting to

  554. be taken

  555. in by a

  556. pretty good

  557. outward

  558. appearance in

  559. this life

  560. and to

  561. connect that

  562. with decent

  563. results in

  564. the next.

  565. Don't

  566. make that

  567. mistake.

  568. If you're

  569. walking past

  570. the poor

  571. in this

  572. life and

  573. thinking you're

  574. pretty good,

  575. you may be

  576. missing God's

  577. heart and

  578. His presence

  579. forever.

  580. And the

  581. end of the

  582. parable has

  583. one final

  584. interaction.

  585. Jesus brings

  586. us back to

  587. the subject

  588. of God's

  589. word and

  590. how we

  591. respond to

  592. it.

  593. Listen for

  594. that, verse

  595. 27.

  596. The rich

  597. man said,

  598. then I beg

  599. you, Father,

  600. if Lazarus

  601. can't come

  602. over here to

  603. me to give

  604. me some

  605. water, I

  606. beg you,

  607. Father, to

  608. send him to

  609. my father's

  610. house, for

  611. I have five

  612. brothers, so

  613. that he may

  614. warn them,

  615. lest they also

  616. come into this

  617. place of

  618. torment.

  619. But Abraham

  620. said, they

  621. have Moses

  622. and the

  623. prophets, let

  624. them hear

  625. them.

  626. And he

  627. said, no,

  628. no, Father

  629. Abraham, but

  630. if someone

  631. goes to

  632. them from

  633. the dead,

  634. they will

  635. repent.

  636. Abraham

  637. said to

  638. him, if

  639. they do

  640. not hear

  641. Moses and

  642. the prophets,

  643. neither will

  644. they be

  645. convinced if

  646. someone should

  647. rise from

  648. the dead.

  649. The rich

  650. man says,

  651. well, it's

  652. too late for

  653. me, but at

  654. least go warn

  655. my brothers

  656. about these

  657. eternal realities

  658. I'm experiencing.

  659. And Abraham

  660. responds, they

  661. have the

  662. warnings of

  663. the Old

  664. Testament

  665. scriptures.

  666. They know

  667. them.

  668. The rich

  669. man responds

  670. like many

  671. of us, I

  672. think, yeah,

  673. yeah, that's

  674. nice, but I

  675. really didn't

  676. take those

  677. seriously.

  678. I needed

  679. more evidence.

  680. If something

  681. else, if I

  682. had heard the

  683. voice of

  684. God, if I

  685. had seen

  686. something clearly

  687. supernatural take

  688. place right in

  689. front of me,

  690. then I would

  691. have believed,

  692. so how about

  693. try that with

  694. them?

  695. Have you ever

  696. felt that?

  697. You ever

  698. said something

  699. like that?

  700. Abraham says,

  701. our unbelief,

  702. our lack of

  703. repentance, as it

  704. were, is not

  705. from lack of

  706. evidence, but

  707. rather from

  708. hearts that love

  709. and worship

  710. things that are

  711. not God,

  712. things other

  713. than God.

  714. God's word is

  715. sufficient.

  716. His law

  717. exposes us

  718. and points

  719. those of us

  720. with hearts

  721. that don't

  722. match God's

  723. heart to

  724. our need

  725. for someone

  726. to live

  727. and die

  728. for us

  729. and to

  730. rise from

  731. the dead.

  732. In Jesus'

  733. day, they

  734. had a different

  735. guy named

  736. Lazarus, who

  737. many had

  738. watched walk

  739. out of the

  740. tomb, and

  741. many Pharisees

  742. and others

  743. still did not

  744. believe in

  745. Jesus, right?

  746. In our

  747. day, we

  748. have now the

  749. testimony of

  750. the risen

  751. Jesus Himself,

  752. the eyewitness

  753. accounts of

  754. many who saw

  755. Him, and the

  756. evidence of

  757. His resurrection

  758. power in this

  759. world and

  760. through His

  761. church, and

  762. still many of

  763. us don't

  764. believe.

  765. The rich man

  766. knows what's

  767. needed.

  768. Repentance.

  769. He identifies

  770. it really

  771. clearly.

  772. He sees it

  773. clearly on

  774. this side of

  775. eternity.

  776. Verse 30

  777. says it this

  778. way,

  779. No,

  780. Father Abraham,

  781. but if

  782. someone goes

  783. to them from

  784. the dead,

  785. they will

  786. repent.

  787. That's what

  788. they need.

  789. They need

  790. repentance.

  791. We need our

  792. hearts exposed

  793. by God's

  794. law so that

  795. we see we

  796. fall short

  797. of His

  798. glory.

  799. We need

  800. then, when

  801. that happens,

  802. we need

  803. then not to

  804. lower or

  805. relax the

  806. standard so

  807. we can meet

  808. it.

  809. That's maybe

  810. what the

  811. Pharisees were

  812. suggesting, that

  813. they could

  814. measure up to

  815. God's law.

  816. What we need

  817. is for the

  818. standard to be

  819. kept high and

  820. us to be

  821. exposed as

  822. falling short

  823. so that we

  824. turn to

  825. God.

  826. Cry out for

  827. His rescue.

  828. Ask Him to

  829. give us His

  830. heart to

  831. follow His

  832. word.

  833. And if we

  834. take eternity

  835. seriously, and

  836. we must, if

  837. we take God's

  838. word seriously,

  839. Moses and the

  840. prophets will

  841. tell us we

  842. must take

  843. repentance

  844. seriously.

  845. The point

  846. here is much

  847. broader than

  848. rich and poor,

  849. isn't it?

  850. it's getting

  851. at our

  852. hearts.

  853. But that's

  854. the window,

  855. the primary

  856. one here,

  857. that Jesus is

  858. using into the

  859. Pharisees'

  860. hearts.

  861. I've been

  862. convicted this

  863. week, it's

  864. one we don't

  865. look through

  866. enough at our

  867. own hearts.

  868. We're used to

  869. it.

  870. We're comfortable.

  871. We need to

  872. have our own

  873. hearts exposed

  874. by God's

  875. law so that

  876. we turn to

  877. Him in

  878. repentance.

  879. So as we

  880. close, just a

  881. chance for us

  882. to take all

  883. three of these

  884. things seriously

  885. this morning.

  886. I'm just going

  887. to give you a

  888. sampling.

  889. A lot more

  890. verses we could

  891. read.

  892. But starting

  893. with Moses and

  894. the prophets,

  895. I'm going to

  896. include Proverbs,

  897. a book of

  898. wisdom for

  899. living in

  900. relationship with

  901. God.

  902. These are

  903. things the

  904. Pharisees had

  905. been told that

  906. we have as

  907. well.

  908. Leviticus 19,

  909. you shall not

  910. strip your

  911. vineyard bare,

  912. neither shall

  913. you gather the

  914. fallen grapes of

  915. your vineyard.

  916. You shall leave

  917. them for the

  918. poor and for

  919. the sojourner.

  920. I am the

  921. Lord your God.

  922. In Deuteronomy,

  923. if among you one

  924. of your brothers

  925. should become

  926. poor, you shall

  927. not harden your

  928. heart or shut

  929. your hand against

  930. your poor

  931. brother, but you

  932. shall open your

  933. hand to him and

  934. lend him sufficient

  935. for his need,

  936. whatever it may

  937. be.

  938. You shall give to

  939. him freely and

  940. your heart shall

  941. not be grudging

  942. when you give to

  943. him.

  944. Because for this

  945. the Lord your

  946. God will bless

  947. you in all your

  948. work and all you

  949. undertake.

  950. For there will

  951. never cease to be

  952. poor in the land.

  953. Therefore I command

  954. you, you shall open

  955. wide your hand to

  956. your brother, to the

  957. needy and to the

  958. poor in your land.

  959. The prophets are

  960. constantly calling

  961. God's people back to

  962. God's heart and his

  963. law, aren't they?

  964. Just a couple of

  965. them.

  966. Isaiah 58,

  967. Is not this the

  968. fast which I choose

  969. to loosen the bonds

  970. of wickedness, to

  971. undo the bands of

  972. the yoke, to let the

  973. oppressed go free and

  974. break every yoke?

  975. Is it not to divide

  976. your bread with the

  977. hungry and bring

  978. the homeless poor

  979. into the house?

  980. When you see the

  981. naked to cover him

  982. and not to hide

  983. yourself from your

  984. own flesh?

  985. Amos chapter 5,

    Amos 5 chapter mention

  986. Therefore because you

  987. trample on the poor

  988. and you exact taxes

  989. of grain from him,

  990. you have built houses

  991. of hewn stone, but

  992. you shall not dwell

  993. in them.

  994. You've planted

  995. pleasant vineyards, but

  996. you shall not drink

  997. their wine.

  998. But let justice roll

  999. down like waters,

  1000. and righteousness

  1001. like an ever-flowing

  1002. stream.

  1003. Zechariah 7,

  1004. Thus has the Lord

  1005. of hosts said,

  1006. Dispense true justice

  1007. and practice kindness

  1008. and compassion each

  1009. to his brother, and

  1010. do not oppress the

  1011. widow or the orphan,

  1012. the stranger or the

  1013. poor.

1014. Do not devise evil in

  1015. your heart against one

  1016. another.

  1017. Proverbs says it

  1018. shorter and clearer

  1019. perhaps for some of

  1020. us.

  1021. Whoever despises his

  1022. neighbor is a sinner,

1023. but blessed is he who

  1024. is generous to the

  1025. poor.

  1026. Whoever oppresses a

  1027. poor man insults his

1028. maker, but he who is

  1029. generous to the needy

  1030. honors him.

  1031. Whoever closes his

1032. ear to the cry of the

  1033. poor will himself call

  1034. out and not be

  1035. answered.

  1036. We could keep reading

  1037. all day.

  1038. I think you understand

  1039. what God's word is

  1040. saying.

  1041. Whoever despises his

  1042. neighbor is a sinner,

1043. but blessed is he who's

  1044. generous to the poor.

  1045. Whoever closes his

1046. ear to the cry of the

  1047. poor will himself call

  1048. out and not be

  1049. answered.

  1050. The rich man experienced

  1051. that the hard way,

  1052. didn't he?

  1053. Jesus affirms all of

  1054. these laws.

1055. Not one will pass away,

  1056. right?

1057. And he adds to them,

1058. Luke 14, when you give

1059. a feast, invite the poor,

  1060. the crippled, the lame,

  1061. the blind.

  1062. James chapter 2, we get a

    James 2 chapter mention

1063. good look at our hearts.

  1064. My brothers, show no

  1065. partiality as you hold

1066. the faith in our Lord

  1067. Jesus Christ, the Lord

  1068. of glory.

1069. Imagine this, if a man

1070. wearing a gold ring and

  1071. fine clothing comes into

1072. your assembly and a poor

  1073. man in shabby clothing

1074. also comes in, and if you

1075. pay attention to the one

  1076. who wears the fine

1077. clothing and say, you sit

1078. here in a good place,

1079. while you say to the

1080. poor man, you stand over

1081. there or sit down at my

1082. feet, have you not then

  1083. made distinctions among

  1084. yourselves and become

  1085. judges with evil thoughts?

  1086. Listen, my beloved

  1087. brothers, has not God

  1088. chosen those who are

1089. poor in the world to be

1090. rich in faith and heirs

  1091. of the kingdom?

  1092. He could have said,

  1093. hasn't God decided to

  1094. bring the poor to

  1095. Abraham's side in heaven?

  1096. But you've dishonored

  1097. the poor man.

  1098. So he challenges us

  1099. later in that chapter,

1100. if a brother or sister

  1101. is poorly clothed and

  1102. lacking in daily food,

1103. and one of you says to

1104. them, go in peace, be

  1105. warmed and filled without

  1106. giving them the things

  1107. needed for the body,

  1108. what good is that?

1109. So also faith by itself,

1110. if it does not have

  1111. works, is dead.

  1112. 1 John 3, if anyone has

1113. the world's goods and sees

1114. his brother in need, yet

  1115. closes his heart against

1116. him, how does God's love

  1117. abide in him?

1118. Does the law of God

  1119. convict your heart?

  1120. Do our lives indicate

  1121. that we embrace God's

1122. law and share his heart

1123. for the poor, or would

1124. we just like to think we

  1125. do?

1126. Do we really believe that

1127. Jesus is good news of

1128. great joy for all people,

  1129. even those who look

  1130. different from us?

1131. By the way, don't just

  1132. tell yourself, I don't

  1133. know any poor people,

  1134. there aren't any right

  1135. outside my front door

1136. like the rich man had.

  1137. You know, the closest

  1138. elementary school to this

1139. church has 72% of its

  1140. students below the poverty

  1141. line for free lunch.

  1142. There's been a homeless

  1143. camp within walking

  1144. distance of this church

  1145. property for several years.

  1146. South Huntsville alone

  1147. has three separate

  1148. Section 8 housing

  1149. complexes.

  1150. Madison County alone

  1151. currently needs an

  1152. additional 50 foster

  1153. families to care for

1154. kids they need to place.

  1155. There are people working

1156. in each of our offices,

1157. on our streets, and just

1158. about every place we go

1159. to eat or shop, who know

  1160. material need deeply.

1161. If you want help engaging

1162. there with God's heart, if

1163. you don't really know where

1164. to start but your heart

1165. wants to, talk with Robert

  1166. Blevins.

  1167. He's sitting over here.

1168. He's here on staff, not

1169. because he's got all the

1170. answers, but he's here to

1171. help equip us to love as

1172. God has called us to.

1173. He would love to sit down and

1174. have coffee, I mean tea, he

  1175. doesn't drink coffee.

1176. He'd love to have tea with

1177. you, to meet with your

1178. small group, to talk with

1179. you about what this could

1180. look like in your life.

1181. But this is really important.

  1182. Don't leave here thinking

  1183. that that is repentance.

1184. That may be fruit of

  1185. repentance in your life.

  1186. Repentance, remember

  1187. repentance turns first where?

1188. From bad deeds and failures to

  1189. good deeds and successes?

1190. Repentance turns first to God.

1191. Turns back to Him and seeks

  1192. His forgiveness first.

  1193. And then His heart.

1194. Do you know there's only one

1195. character in all of Jesus'

1196. parables who gets a name?

  1197. Lazarus.

  1198. Lazarus.

  1199. Lazarus.

  1200. Lazarus.

  1201. The poor homeless beggar.

1202. You know what Lazarus means?

  1203. God helps.

1204. Don't leave here today with

1205. your hope in doing better.

1206. That's not what will save you.

  1207. You'll need a new heart for

1208. that and you can't do that

  1209. for yourself.

1210. Our hope is that God

  1211. helps.

1212. That God sends a Savior.

1213. And we get to celebrate that

1214. in a special way this week.

1215. A Savior who lives for us,

1216. who dies to offer us

  1217. forgiveness of our sins

1218. for all of our failures

1219. so they can be forgiven forever.

1220. And then He rises from the dead

1221. to give us new life

1222. and the hope of having new hearts

  1223. that love like God's.

1224. that's what His resurrection power

  1225. does in those who

  1226. trust Him.

1227. Today if you hear His voice,

  1228. don't harden your hearts

1229. but have your heart broken

  1230. and turn to Him

  1231. and have it healed

  1232. forever.

  1233. Let's pray.

  1234. Father, we confess together

  1235. our great sin,

  1236. our failures.

  1237. Your law,

  1238. one verse is enough

  1239. to expose our hearts.

1240. To show us that we don't

  1241. live and love

1242. as you have called us to.

  1243. And so Father,

  1244. first we ask

  1245. for your forgiveness.

1246. We need the blood of Jesus

  1247. to cover us,

  1248. not our own efforts.

  1249. And then Father,

  1250. as it does,

1251. as we continue to drink

  1252. deeply of His grace,

  1253. might you make us

  1254. a community

1255. that loves the way you love,

  1256. that reflects your heart
