  1. You are listening to a message from Southwood Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama.

  2. Our passion is to experience and express grace.

  3. Join us.

  4. Let's step back in Matthew a little ways to Matthew 16.

  5. Beginning at verse 21, from that time Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go

  6. to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders and the chief priests and the scribes

  7. and be killed and on the third day be raised.

  8. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him saying, far be it from you, Lord, this

  9. shall never happen to you.

  10. But he turned and said to Peter, get behind me, Satan.

  11. You are a hindrance to me, for you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but

  12. on the things of man.

  13. And Jesus told his disciples, if anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take

  14. up his cross and follow me.

  15. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake

  16. will find it.

  17. For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul?

  18. Or what shall a man give in return for his soul?

  19. For the Son of Man is going to come with his angels in the glory of his Father, and then

  20. he will repay each person according to what he has done.

  21. Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see

  22. the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.

  23. Pray with me as I lead us.

  24. Father, the inadequacy of my ability to communicate the truth that is here weighs heavy, maybe more

  25. than most times.

  26. So Father, I pray for just an outpouring of your Spirit, that you would use the foolishness

  27. of a preacher, that you would draw us into the wisdom, the divine wisdom of God, the King,

  28. and the significance and the treasure that this night represents.

  29. Help us, we pray, to know you, to know ourselves.

  30. Help us, we pray, in Jesus' name.

  31. Amen.

  32. Amen.

  33. Now, there's something wrong with Good Friday.

  34. There's something wrong at its deepest levels.

  35. You know, Easter is supposed to be one of, really should be one of the great celebrations

  36. of the year, and it is because we celebrate that day when the first disciples beheld the risen

  37. Christ.

  38. And just try to imagine what that experience was like.

  39. You know, when Peter writes in 1 Peter about this inexpressible joy, he was talking from experience.

  40. You know, Sunday when we worship at Easter, it's going to be upbeat.

  41. It's going to be celebrative.

  42. Even tomorrow, we're going to have all the kids here.

  43. It's going to be more like a party, trying to, you know, find eggs out here on the lawn.

  44. And, but there's something wrong with Friday.

  45. It is a, even as we worship here together, it's very sullen, maybe depressing.

  46. You know, we don't like to talk about pain and suffering.

  47. It's not in our cultural makeup.

  48. I was just with some of my friends a couple nights ago, and somehow,

  49. some way, and none of these friends are a part of the church,

  50. but somehow we got on the subject of death at a Mexican restaurant.

  51. And as fast as we got there, they ran as fast as they could away from it.

  52. And so, we don't like to talk about pain and suffering,

  53. but when we think about that Friday,

  54. there was plenty to go around.

  55. You know, Good Friday is just hard.

  56. Because I think down inside, we feel that this, there is something wrong here.

  57. This is not what it should have been.

  58. You know, when we come to the gospel,

  59. the gospel is good news.

  60. And so, we want to talk about good news.

  61. We want to be upbeat and positive,

  62. and again, celebrate all the great things that God has done.

  63. We think of Jesus.

  64. We think how much He's loved us,

  65. the hope that we have in Him.

  66. We think of all of this infinite grace and mercy

  67. that is poured out upon us.

  68. And so, we should be celebrating.

  69. We should be upbeat.

  70. The gospel, indeed, is good news.

  71. But it's only good news

  72. when we contemplate

  73. the wrong

  74. that was done on Friday.

  75. There is no resurrection.

  76. There is no resurrected life.

  77. There is no celebration

  78. before.

  79. There is a death.

  80. And that death, we must look into deeply.

  81. You know, it's interesting,

  82. even as we read these verses in Matthew 16,

  83. you know, it's not just our culture,

  84. because the disciples had the same struggle.

  85. I mean, as soon as Jesus starts talking about them,

  86. he says, yeah, we're going to go to Jerusalem,

  87. and I'm going to suffer,

  88. and they're going to put me to death.

  89. And he even tells them about the resurrection,

  90. but that thought,

  91. that totally escapes them.

  92. And so, Peter,

  93. at least exercising a little bit of tact,

  94. didn't do this in front of the group,

  95. but took him off to the side.

  96. And basically saying,

  97. you got this wrong.

  98. This is not the script.

  99. This is not the way it's supposed to be.

  100. And then Jesus

  101. refers to maybe his closest friend

  102. as Satan himself.

  103. And he says,

  104. you are thinking in man's terms.

  105. You're not thinking in God's terms.

  106. And when you're thinking in men's terms,

  107. you're a hindrance to me.

  108. And so Jesus tells him here,

  109. he's determined to go to Jerusalem,

  110. because that's why he was called.

  111. That's why he came.

  112. He did not come just to make life better.

  113. He did not come just to heal diseases.

  114. He did not come

  115. just to teach people a better way of life.

  116. He did all that.

  117. That was a prelude,

  118. a foretaste of what the kingdom would look like.

  119. But what Jesus came for

  120. was a garden.

  121. A very eventful garden.

  122. But you know,

  123. all this started,

  124. you know,

  125. there's two things I want us to see about this tonight.

  126. And the first is the calling of Jesus

  127. is all about death.

  128. It is all about death.

  129. The year,

  130. you know,

  131. as Jesus came,

  132. you know,

  133. his ministry was glorious

  134. in so many ways,

  135. but yet his goal

  136. was this garden.

  137. But way back in the beginning,

  138. there was another garden.

  139. A garden where things

  140. should have gone better.

  141. God created all things,

  142. declared it to be good,

  143. and at the heart of that creation

  144. was man,

  145. and he put him in a garden.

  146. And man was made

  147. to give glory

  148. to his creator

  149. through his trust,

  150. through his submission,

  151. through his service,

  152. to declare the creator's

  153. greatness

  154. and value

  155. above all things.

  156. It was a perfect world,

  157. a perfect environment.

  158. He had one,

  159. only one way

  160. to do that,

  161. and that was simply

  162. to stay away from

  163. this one tree.

  164. And at that critical point,

  165. where he should have bowed

  166. in trust,

  167. and in submission,

  168. the one point

  169. when he should have

  170. given glory to the creator,

  171. he took it

  172. for himself.

  173. He said,

  174. I will submit to only one,

  175. and that's me.

  176. And so in doing that,

  177. as promised,

  178. they were cursed.

  179. They were exiled

  180. from the pleasure,

  181. the intimacy,

  182. the love,

  183. and joy

  184. of the creator.

  185. They were enslaved

  186. to futility

  187. along with

  188. all of the rest

  189. of creation.

  190. They were

  191. enslaved

  192. to suffering

  193. to suffering,

  194. and ultimately

  195. to death.

  196. Everything they touched,

  197. everything they thought,

  198. everything they dreamed,

  199. everything they did

  200. from here on

  201. was corrupt.

  202. it was polluted

  203. by a heart

  204. that wanted

  205. glory.

  206. The friend of God

  207. was now an enemy,

  208. separated

  209. in enmity

  210. with no hope

  211. of making it

  212. any better.

  213. well,

  214. now we can fast

  215. forward

  216. to another garden,

  217. a garden

  218. where Jesus

  219. finds himself.

  220. After the supper

  221. with his disciples,

  222. he goes to

  223. a garden.

  224. but there

  225. in that garden,

  226. it was not

  227. the created man

  228. that was put to test,

  229. but it was the God man.

  230. It was Jesus himself

  231. facing

  232. the same

  233. challenge

  234. with the odds

  235. so much heavier

  236. against him.

  237. This was not

  238. the perfect world.

  239. This was now

  240. a very broken world.

  241. He was not

  242. promised

  243. this

  244. you know,

  245. riches

  246. of intimacy

  247. with the Father.

  248. He was promised

  249. exactly the opposite.

  250. He said,

  251. if you obey,

  252. if you trust,

  253. if you serve,

  254. you will be

  255. separated

  256. from the one

  257. through all eternity

  258. he has

  259. enjoyed

  260. and loved.

  261. In this second garden,

  262. the son

  263. faced

  264. rejection

  265. and suffering

  266. beyond belief,

  267. beyond our

  268. comprehension.

  269. He did not

  270. choose prosperity.

  271. He

  272. did

  273. what the first

  274. man

  275. should have

  276. done.

  277. He bowed

  278. and said,

  279. not my will

  280. but yours

  281. be done.

  282. He trusted,

  283. submitted

  284. himself

  285. to the

  286. Father.

  287. He chose

  288. alienation.

  289. He chose

  290. judgment.

  291. He chose

  292. death.

  293. He chose

  294. death.

  295. what the

  296. first man

  297. should have

  298. done,

  299. now the

  300. second Adam

  301. did do.

  302. He put

  303. the Father's

  304. glory above

  305. all things

  306. and he

  307. bowed

  308. in submission

  309. and trust

  310. to the

  311. one

  312. who

  313. was

  314. above

  315. all

  316. others.

  317. This

  318. was his

  319. journey.

  320. His

  321. journey

  322. came.

  323. He came

  324. to this

  325. garden

  326. to stand

  327. in

  328. for that

  329. first man

  330. who had

  331. now lived

  332. for centuries

  333. in this

  334. slavery of

  335. futility,

  336. but he

  337. stood in

  338. for him

  339. in two

  340. different

  341. ways.

  342. He

  343. stood in

  344. and obeyed.

  345. He served.

  346. He worshipped

  347. the creator

  348. the way

  349. that first

  350. man should

  351. have done.

  352. He did

  353. it for

  354. him.

  355. But he

  356. also stood

  357. in and

  358. took the

  359. payment.

  360. It was

  361. not his.

  362. it was

  363. a payment

  364. that

  365. belonged

  366. to

  367. someone

  368. else.

  369. He

  370. was the

  371. sacrificial

  372. lamb,

  373. the

  374. innocent

  375. standing

  376. in

  377. for the

  378. guilty.

  379. and there

  380. is

  381. something

  382. very

  383. wrong

  384. with this.

  385. There's

  386. something

  387. very

  388. unfair.

  389. The

  390. righteous

  391. one

  392. is

  393. treated

  394. as a

  395. criminal.

  396. The

  397. righteous

  398. one

  399. is now

  400. the

  401. recipient

  402. of

  403. contempt

  404. and

  405. wrath

  406. and

  407. alienation

  408. while the

  409. guilty

  410. party

  411. gets

  412. off

  413. scot-free.

  414. We need

  415. to feel

  416. the weight

  417. of this.

  418. A lot

  419. more than

  420. we

  421. typically

  422. do.

  423. Because

  424. we are

  425. the

  426. guilty

  427. party.

  428. He

  429. received

  430. the

  431. punishment

  432. on

  433. himself,

  434. the

  435. innocent

  436. one

  437. that we

  438. should have

  439. received.

  440. But this

  441. was his

  442. calling.

  443. the

  444. death

  445. Jesus

  446. died,

  447. I

  448. should,

  449. you

  450. should

  451. have

  452. died.

  453. The

  454. glory

  455. that the

  456. father

  457. deserved

  458. that he

  459. gave,

  460. I

  461. should

  462. have,

  463. you

  464. should

  465. have

  466. given.

  467. He

  468. did

  469. all of

  470. that

  471. in our

  472. place.

  473. He,

  474. the

  475. beloved,

  476. was treated

  477. as the

  478. enemy.

  479. in

  480. eye,

  481. the

  482. enemy,

  483. and I

  484. have now

  485. become the

  486. friend of

  487. the throne.

  488. He was

  489. treated with

  490. contempt,

  491. so I can

  492. now be

  493. treated with

  494. joy.

  495. scorn,

  496. so that I

  497. can now

  498. be

  499. welcomed

  500. home.

  501. He was

  502. treated with

  503. wrath,

  504. so that I

  505. can now

  506. know peace.

  507. let the

  508. weight of

  509. Jesus'

  510. death

  511. sink in.

  512. Let it

  513. weigh heavy,

  514. because this

  515. is why he

  516. came.

  517. But as he

  518. continues in

  519. Matthew to

  520. talk to his

  521. disciples,

  522. Jesus came

  523. to glorify

  524. the father,

  525. and in that

  526. process was

  527. a road to

  528. a cross,

  529. to his

  530. death.

  531. And now,

  532. all of those

  533. who follow

  534. him, as he

  535. tells the

  536. disciples there,

  537. are to,

  538. everyone who

  539. would come

  540. after me

  541. must take

  542. up his

  543. cross.

  544. cross, we

  545. are called to

  546. follow him

  547. into death.

  548. When Luke

  549. writes this, he

  550. adds a word.

  551. He says, to

  552. take up her

  553. cross daily.

  554. This is not a

  555. one-time thing.

  556. This is a

  557. constant, I've

  558. got to do this

  559. every day kind

  560. of thing.

  561. Because as we

  562. follow Jesus,

  563. that self-determining,

  564. self-centered,

  565. self-glorifying

  566. aspect of who

  567. we are,

  568. must die.

  569. You know,

  570. coming to

  571. Jesus is a

  572. good thing.

  573. Life goes so

  574. much better in

  575. many ways because

  576. of him, you

  577. know, relationships

  578. and so forth,

  579. but,

  580. but,

  581. Easter,

  582. the joy of

  583. resurrected life,

  584. only happens

  585. after death.

  586. And so what

  587. does it mean for

  588. us to take up

  589. our cross daily?

  590. We don't die

  591. like Jesus

  592. died.

  593. His death

  594. was once

  595. for all.

  596. So what is he

  597. calling us here

  598. to?

  599. Well, I think

  600. we are to die

  601. in multiple

  602. ways.

  603. And all of

  604. it is,

  605. centers around

  606. this core of

  607. self-glorification.

  608. First thing is,

  609. it means dying

  610. to our self-determination.

  611. It was,

  612. last week I was

  613. reading through

  614. the Psalms,

  615. and I got to

  616. Psalm 100,

  617. 110.

  618. And at

  619. verse 2,

  620. this verse had

  621. never struck me

  622. this way,

  623. but verse 2

  624. simply says,

  625. the Lord sends

  626. forth from Zion

  627. your mighty

  628. scepter.

  629. Rule in the

  630. midst of your

  631. enemies.

  632. And I read

  633. that verse,

  634. and I got a

  635. knot in my

  636. stomach.

  637. Because there

  638. was something

  639. down deep

  640. inside that

  641. says,

  642. I do

  643. not

  644. want

  645. someone

  646. ruling

  647. over me.

  648. I do

  649. not

  650. like

  651. submission.

  652. I want

  653. to determine

  654. my own

  655. thing.

  656. Just like

  657. every other

  658. part of our

  659. culture,

  660. I am

  661. hopelessly

  662. determined

  663. to be the

  664. king

  665. king and

  666. to rule

  667. over

  668. Klagastan.

  669. It's

  670. my kingdom

  671. and I'll

  672. do what

  673. I want.

  674. But that

  675. self-rule

  676. must die

  677. daily.

  678. I need to

  679. join with

  680. Jesus and

  681. pray

  682. constantly,

  683. not my

  684. will,

  685. but yours

  686. be done,

  687. even to

  688. the point

  689. of my own

  690. death,

  691. that I

  692. might declare

  693. the glory

  694. of the

  695. true king,

  696. not this

  697. imposter

  698. king.

  699. I also

  700. need to

  701. die to

  702. my own

  703. personal

  704. significance.

  705. You know,

  706. one of the

  707. things that

  708. terrifies me

  709. is

  710. obscurity.

  711. You know,

  712. that I would

  713. mean nothing.

  714. You know,

  715. I want to

  716. be somebody.

  717. I want to

  718. be somebody

  719. important.

  720. I want to

  721. be somebody

  722. that's known.

  723. I want to

  724. be somebody

  725. that's wanted.

  726. I want to

  727. be somebody

  728. that people

  729. will look up

  730. to and find

  731. value in

  732. them.

  733. And so I

  734. live and

  735. govern all

  736. that I do

  737. around this

  738. pursuit.

  739. I am

  740. addicted to

  741. glory.

  742. I am

  743. addicted to

  744. creating it

  745. for myself.

  746. I need

  747. to come

  748. once again

  749. daily to

  750. the place

  751. where I

  752. see I'm

  753. only the

  754. creature.

  755. Yes,

  756. I'm

  757. significant.

  758. Yes,

  759. I'm

  760. created in

  761. the image

  762. of God,

  763. but I

  764. am

  765. created in

  766. the image

  767. of God

  768. just like

  769. everyone

  770. else.

  771. And my

  772. significance

  773. does not

  774. come from

  775. me and

  776. what I

  777. produce.

  778. It comes

  779. from bowing

  780. before the

  781. king and

  782. serving him

  783. and exalting

  784. him.

  785. My glory

  786. daily

  787. must die.

  788. You know,

  789. Good Friday

  790. is a good

  791. time to

  792. contemplate

  793. Jesus'

  794. death in

  795. our place.

  796. It's also

  797. a good time

  798. for us to

  799. contemplate

  800. the need

  801. of our

  802. own

  803. deaths.

  804. Yes,

  805. yes,

  806. yes,

  807. yes,

  808. yes.

  809. Yes,

  810. yes,

  811. yes,

  812. yes.

  813. Yes,

  814. yes,

  815. yes,

  816. yes,

  817. yes,

  818. yes,

  819. yes,

  820. we need

  821. to acknowledge

  822. the weight

  823. of our

  824. sin.

  825. We need

  826. to acknowledge

  827. the weight

  828. of that

  829. sin in

  830. our rebellion

  831. against the

  832. glory of

  833. God

  834. that we're

  835. addicted to.

  836. We are

  837. addicted to

  838. this rebellion.

  839. We are

  840. addicted to

  841. our own

  842. glory.

  843. We must

  844. contemplate

  845. also

  846. the cost

  847. the cost

  848. of that

  849. rebellion.

  850. It doesn't

  851. cost you

  852. a whole

  853. lot.

  854. You are

  855. really the

  856. beneficiaries

  857. of great

  858. riches,

  859. but it

  860. cost

  861. someone

  862. terribly.

  863. I must

  864. come to

  865. terms

  866. that the

  867. cross

  868. where Jesus

  869. died

  870. was my

  871. cross.

  872. It's

  873. coming to

  874. terms,

  875. too,

  876. with that

  877. daily dying

  878. that I need

  879. to be as a

  880. follower of

  881. Christ to

  882. embrace,

  883. not to

  884. fight.

  885. Christ.

  886. We who are

  887. in Christ

  888. can't

  889. embrace such

  890. a death

  891. because we

  892. know Easter

  893. is coming.

  894. But let's

  895. don't go to

  896. Easter too

  897. soon.

  898. Let's

  899. linger.

  900. Linger here

  901. on Friday.

  902. Linger here

  903. in the drama

  904. of the death

  905. of Christ.

  906. And then

  907. when Sunday

  908. morning gets

  909. here,

  910. the

  911. sweetness

  912. will be so

  913. much greater.

  914. Let's

  915. pray.

  916. Lord Jesus,

  917. help us to

  918. contemplate

  919. death.

  920. A death

  921. that was

  922. necessary.

  923. The death

  924. that you

  925. took that

  926. should have

  927. been ours,

  928. but a death

  929. that you

  930. gladly took

  931. for the

  932. glory of

  933. the Father.

  934. Thank you.

  935. Amen.
