  1. You are listening to a message from Southwood Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama.

  2. Our passion is to experience and express grace.

  3. Join us.

  4. Pray with me.

  5. Father, thanks for a love like that.

  6. Love that never lets us go.

  7. Where would we be without it?

  8. What would our hope be?

  9. It's only a love like that that could even enable us to look honestly at the darkness of our hearts and our lives without just despairing.

  10. And so would you reassure us of that love this morning as we look at your word, at a challenging part of it?

  11. And Father, by your Spirit, please do challenge us.

  12. Would you do so well, would you comfort those who are afflicted?

  13. Holy Spirit, come and do that as we look at your word.

  14. We ask it in Jesus' name.

  15. Amen.

  16. This morning we're going to look at God's word together on the issue of marriage and divorce.

  17. Divorce, a significant and sensitive issue in our culture, in our lives.

  18. You've probably heard a lot of statistics about divorce.

  19. Divorce, while the 50% of marriages end in divorce one has never been true in the U.S., divorce does seem often to be all around us, doesn't it?

  20. Another one you've probably heard is that Christians get divorced at the same rate as anyone else.

  21. Again, not true according to the best statistics.

  22. But still, it's very believable for us because many of us in this room have endured the pain of divorce.

  23. Most all of us have a family member who has.

  24. And we've seen the reality of it, the hurt of it, the difficulty there.

  25. Over the last 10 years or so, I've talked with a lot of people considering divorce.

  26. And I often hear things like this, things that reflect on our vision, our goals for marriage.

  27. I hear people say, her unreasonableness, his uncontrolled anger, her demeaning distance, his emotional neglect, whatever it may be, is not something I can live with any longer.

  28. Or, I know God doesn't like divorce, but He doesn't like unhappy marriages either.

  29. Or, God doesn't want me or my kids to be unhappy.

  30. I know He wouldn't want us living like this.

  31. And there's an element of truth in those statements, isn't there?

  32. In a culture flooded with divorce, it makes sense that when I'm miserable in my marriage, I need to get out.

  33. I notice similar things actually at the other end of marriage when I talk with those at the beginning, maybe in premarital counseling, for example.

  34. If you ask them why they're getting married, you'll hear things like, I just like being with her.

  35. Or, we're really a great partnership, we get along so well.

  36. Or, I just realized I can't live without Him.

  37. A little bit different words and wonderful things to feel, but you may hear a similar focus.

  38. All of these seemingly focus on a relationship that exists to fulfill me, right?

  39. Isn't that the natural way that we think about relationships and marriage in particular?

  40. It's here to help me become the best version of me.

  41. We might call it self-actualization.

  42. So, it's no surprise when a few months or years in and my spouse doesn't seem to be helping me feel good about myself and be the best that I can be.

  43. In fact, it feels quite different.

  44. I need another plan.

  45. It's not just our culture that has focused on self or that has promoted divorce.

  46. Jesus encountered the same situation with the Pharisees, the religious teachers of His day.

  47. Some rabbis did teach that divorce should be very rare, but many of them taught that a man could get a divorce for just about any reason,

  48. including some who taught that if dinner was overcooked, that was grounds for divorce.

  49. Or if a man found another woman he found more attractive than his wife, that was grounds for a divorce.

  50. You see, basically for anything that one came up with.

  51. And so, as we've been reading and studying through Luke, we came to this passage back before Easter,

  52. and what Jesus is doing in Luke 16 is challenging the Pharisees about their attitude actually towards money.

  53. That's primarily what he's been talking about here and how they have a low view of God's law

  54. that actually calls them to sacrificial generosity and they've lowered that bar way down here.

  55. And while he's talking about it, he mentions as another example of them lowering the bar of God's law,

  56. their view on divorce.

  57. It seems to be a common place to drop that standard.

  58. Luke 16 at verse 18, Jesus says,

  59. Adultery.

  60. They heard that, didn't they?

  61. They knew the law.

  62. That's one of the big ten.

  63. That grabbed their attention.

  64. What's going on here?

  65. What's Jesus doing?

  66. They know not to take adultery.

  67. Adultery being unfaithfulness.

  68. The breaking of a promise.

  69. The breaking of the bond of a relationship and a commitment to someone else.

  70. It doesn't take long to see that Jesus' view of divorce is a bit different for Mars, does it?

  71. He reaffirms this strong passion for marriage and strong distaste for divorce in another conversation

  72. with the Pharisees where they actually ask him about marriage and divorce specifically.

  73. So he gives a much fuller explanation than he does here when he's just using it as an example about something else.

  74. Let me read that for you in Matthew 19.

  75. In other words, don't get divorced.

  76. So they said, well, why then did Moses command one to give her certificate of divorce and to send her away?

  77. Why is that in the Old Testament?

  78. And Jesus says, if we keep going into verse 8 on the next slide,

  79. Because of your hardness of heart, Moses allowed you to divorce your wives.

  80. But from the beginning, it was not so.

  81. And I say to you, whoever divorces his wife except for sexual immorality and marries another commits adultery.

  82. The disciples understood what he was saying.

  83. And in their response, they said to him, if such is the case of a man with his wife, it's better not to marry.

  84. Wow.

  85. Jesus says again, divorce except in very specific circumstances is adultery.

  86. Don't do it.

  87. And we're not misunderstanding him.

  88. That challenges our personal and cultural sensibilities, doesn't it?

  89. It certainly did for the disciples when they heard it.

  90. Quick side note.

  91. If God and his word never challenge our personal and cultural sensibilities,

  92. we're probably not listening to it very honestly.

  93. Think about that.

  94. God being God and us being not God,

  95. if nothing he said ever challenged our hearts or stretched us beyond what seemed right to us,

  96. we would need to wonder why that was,

  97. why we just naturally knew so well.

  98. This is one of those points where it stretches us a bit, doesn't it?

  99. Let's not write it off.

  100. It is God's word.

  101. Let's ask Jesus, why set the bar so high for divorce?

  102. I think to understand Jesus' strong passion against divorce,

  103. we have to understand his strong passion for marriage.

  104. It's what he keeps referencing here.

  105. God's purpose for marriage is much different from what our approach usually is

  106. and where our goals are typically focused.

  107. See, for God from the very beginning when he invented marriage,

  108. which he did, didn't he?

  109. He invented it to have a purpose that was God-centered first,

  110. not merely man-centered.

  111. To display who God is and how he loves.

  112. That's what was on his heart.

  113. I love to think of it, and you've heard me talk about it in terms of storytelling, right?

  114. That we get this privilege to share the great story of God's work in all of history in relationship.

  115. Because that's really where it starts, Jesus says.

  116. God created us, male and female, in his image.

  117. And Jesus, in that passage we just read, goes all the way back to Genesis 2, in the garden,

  118. and says relationships are part of the way that we reflect the image of God,

  119. Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

  120. We're to reflect his image in all of our relationships,

  121. and especially in our marriages where Paul says we tell the story of the love of Jesus

  122. for his bride, the church, that particular relationship.

  123. You remember Ephesians chapter 5?

    Ephesians 5 chapter mention

  124. Paul 2, like Jesus, goes all the way back to Genesis chapter 2

    Genesis 2 chapter mention

  125. and explains what marriage was designed for.

  126. A man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife,

  127. and the two shall become one flesh.

  128. And Paul says this mystery is profound.

  129. I'm saying that it refers to Christ and the church.

  130. That's what God was up to.

  131. A profound mystery.

  132. But marriage about Christ and the church.

  133. That's the great story our marriages are to tell.

  134. So I think what we have to do is remember that great love story,

  135. the greatest of all love stories,

  136. what's going on in that story that we're supposed to reflect,

  137. that we're supposed to tell in our marriages.

  138. Just a few minutes, we're going to look at it

  139. to help us see why divorce is so abhorrent to God,

  140. and also why it's so painful for us.

  141. It's a true Cinderella story where a princess who's intended for glory

  142. is lost and abandoned and broken in need of rescue.

  143. And the prince of heaven comes on a rescue mission, doesn't he?

  144. To find this princess and at the cost of his own life

  145. to restore her to the beauty and glory that she was created for.

  146. And he does that.

  147. He marries her, in fact.

  148. She delights in his love,

  149. and they live in intimate relationship happily ever after.

  150. Three things, particularly in this story,

  151. that we see about God.

  152. The first is we see God's purifying grace on display in this story

  153. where failings are met with forgiveness.

  154. It's this way from the very beginning of the relationship, actually.

  155. I'm not going to read all of Ezekiel chapter 16 this morning.

    Ezekiel 16 chapter mention

  156. It's kind of long.

  157. But you should do that this afternoon.

  158. Ezekiel 16.

  159. God describes finding Israel, his people, for the first time

  160. as a baby born and never washed,

  161. lying in its blood, weak, undesirable.

  162. And he, rather than rejecting her,

  163. tells the rest of the story in terms of marriage.

  164. Verse 8.

  165. I made my vow to you and entered into a covenant with you,

  166. declares the Lord God,

  167. and you became mine.

  168. Then I bathed you with water

  169. and washed off your blood from you

  170. and anointed you with oil.

  171. And your renown went forth among the nations

  172. because of your beauty.

  173. For it was perfect through the splendor

  174. that I had bestowed on you,

  175. declares the Lord God.

  176. This is what happens.

  177. In his grace, he comes to one not deserving of anything,

  178. not beautiful at all.

  179. And he loves the unlovely.

  180. He doesn't merely overlook the weakness,

  181. but he washes, cleanses, purifies in his grace.

  182. And then you know what happens

  183. in the next 40 verses or so?

  184. Israel runs off.

  185. Dirties herself with the nations of the world

  186. and their idolatry, adultery.

  187. And God says this in verse 60.

  188. Yet, despite all that you've done,

  189. yet I will remember my covenant with you

  190. in the days of your youth,

  191. and I will establish for you an everlasting covenant.

  192. I will establish my covenant with you,

  193. and you shall know that I am the Lord,

  194. that you may remember and be confounded

  195. and never open your mouth again

  196. because of your shame.

  197. When I atone for you

  198. for all that you have done,

  199. declares the Lord God.

  200. That covenant commitment,

  201. no matter what the other one did,

  202. intended never to be broken,

  203. that's why divorce is so painful, isn't it?

  204. Several of my friends who have experienced divorce

  205. said to me this week,

  206. that no matter what else they felt

  207. in their divorce,

  208. no matter what the circumstances,

  209. the pain,

  210. the breaking of that relationship

  211. is so awful.

  212. It hurts so deeply.

  213. It's like tearing apart two things

  214. that were never meant to be separated.

  215. It hurts.

  216. And God has given us

  217. this purifying grace.

  218. It's often painful in its application too,

  219. but it ultimately washes the dirtiest,

  220. forgives the biggest failures,

  221. and makes beautiful the ugliest

  222. and most undeserving.

  223. That's what God does

  224. in His relationship with us.

  225. So then as we get to the middle of the story,

  226. at the real climax of it,

  227. we see God's sacrificial love.

  228. It's a story where sacrifice

  229. is not a burden,

  230. but a delight.

  231. Where it's not a path to misery,

  232. but a road to glory, isn't it?

  233. The Father sends His only Son,

  234. the Prince,

  235. who sacrifices His rights

  236. as the Prince of Heaven.

  237. Who sacrifices His riches and comforts

  238. as the heir of all things.

  239. Who sacrifices eventually His very life

  240. in order to marry the princess.

  241. In order to make the unworthy one worthy.

  242. That's the picture that Paul paints

  243. in Philippians 2

  244. when Jesus,

  245. rather than clinging to heaven's glories,

  246. lets go of them.

  247. He humbles Himself

  248. and sacrifices His life for us.

  249. But He did that all

  250. not out of some obligation,

  251. but out of love, right?

  252. Out of His love for us

  253. because of the joy set before Him

  254. that He endured the cross.

  255. He suffered certainly,

  256. unimaginably,

  257. but purchased for Himself

  258. a bride whom He loves,

  259. with whom He will enjoy glory forever.

  260. And that was the path there.

  261. It's a concept of sacrifice

  262. that we know very little about these days,

  263. isn't it?

  264. Divorce often offers to us fulfillment

  265. in other people,

  266. in other situations,

  267. whatever it takes

  268. to take care of number one.

  269. But marriage

  270. is not meant to be merely

  271. a rejection of personal fulfillment

  272. into misery

  273. for the sake of someone else,

  274. but rather,

  275. in the steps of the one

  276. who designed us

  277. and invented marriage,

  278. it's finding mutual fulfillment

  279. through mutual sacrifice.

  280. Finally, as we get

  281. toward the end of the story,

  282. marriage is to display

  283. God's tenacious faithfulness.

  284. It's to tell the story

  285. of a God

  286. who continues

  287. to pursue

  288. the unfaithful

  289. with love

  290. rather than punishing them

  291. with rejection.

  292. The prophet Hosea

  293. tells that part of the story

  294. really well

  295. through his own life

  296. as God sends him

  297. to marry a prostitute

  298. in order to teach God's people

  299. about His love for them

  300. in the midst of their

  301. adulterous idolatry.

  302. Listen to how Hosea

  303. describes God's faithfulness

  304. to an unfaithful people.

  305. In that day,

  306. declares the Lord,

  307. you will call me

  308. my husband

  309. and no longer

  310. will you call me

  311. my Baal.

  312. For I will remove

  313. the names of the Baals

  314. from her mouth

  315. and they shall be remembered

  316. by name no more

  317. and I'll make for them

  318. a covenant on that day

  319. with the beasts

  320. of the field,

  321. the birds of the heavens,

  322. the creeping things

  323. of the ground.

  324. I'll abolish the bow,

  325. the sword,

  326. and war from the land

  327. and I will make you

  328. lie down in safety.

  329. I will betroth you

  330. to me forever.

  331. I will betroth you

  332. to me in righteousness

  333. and in justice,

  334. in steadfast love

  335. and mercy.

  336. I will betroth you

  337. to me in faithfulness

  338. and you shall know

  339. the Lord.

  340. I will betroth you

  341. to me in faithfulness

  342. forever.

  343. forever.

  344. You can run away

  345. to other lovers

  346. but I will chase you

  347. down and buy you back.

  348. And there may be

  349. painful discipline

  350. in the process

  351. but we will be together

  352. forever.

  353. I'm committed to it.

  354. There ain't no darkness

  355. strong enough

  356. that could tear you out

  357. from my heart.

  358. There ain't no strength

  359. that's strong enough

  360. that could tear this love apart.

  361. No, I won't let you go.

  362. Tenacious faithfulness.

  363. When repeated rejection

  364. has come from one side

  365. to the other,

  366. when the name of your lover

  367. has been dragged

  368. through the mud publicly,

  369. when divorce seems to be

  370. the only reasonable option,

  371. I won't let you go.

  372. God says.

  373. We all probably know people

  374. who in the midst

  375. of their unfaithfulness

  376. have experienced

  377. this tenacious faithfulness

  378. from a forgiving spouse.

  379. As one of my friends

  380. has said,

  381. it's experiencing a grace

  382. that he had only been taught

  383. existed.

  384. Isn't that supposed to be

  385. the daily reality

  386. in all of our marriages?

  387. Man, I could never repay

  388. my wife

  389. for the number of times

  390. that she has in my failures

  391. met me with faithful,

  392. forgiving love,

  393. giving me a taste

  394. of God's love

  395. when I didn't deserve it

  396. at my lowest points.

  397. Loving the unlovely

  398. requires grace.

  399. It requires sacrifice.

  400. It requires tenacious faithfulness.

  401. And when we experience those,

  402. we experience and tell

  403. the story of God's love

  404. for us in Christ.

  405. It's beautiful.

  406. It's glorious

  407. when you see it, isn't it?

  408. I'm just going to share

  409. two stories of this

  410. with you

  411. that I've shared before.

  412. They display this kind of love

  413. in the midst of physical trauma

  414. that could have altered

  415. a relationship entirely.

  416. And it's a kind of love

  417. that God would call us

  418. to show

  419. not just when

  420. physical realities

  421. change things,

  422. but emotional and relational

  423. trauma

  424. comes to us too.

  425. The first is

  426. Robertson McQuilkin.

  427. He was president

  428. of Columbia Bible College

  429. over 20 years

  430. until in 1990

  431. his wife Muriel

  432. was struggling deeply

  433. with Alzheimer's,

  434. becoming frantic

  435. whenever he was not with her,

  436. even bloodying her feet

  437. walking back and forth

  438. from their home

  439. to his office

  440. looking for him.

  441. So he wrote

  442. to the Bible College community

  443. about his decision

  444. to step down

  445. from the job he loved.

  446. The decision was made

  447. in a way

  448. 42 years ago

  449. when I promised

  450. to care for Muriel

  451. in sickness

  452. and in health

  453. till death do us part.

  454. So as I told

  455. the students and faculty

  456. as a man of my word,

  457. integrity has something

  458. to do with it.

  459. But so does fairness.

  460. She's cared for me

  461. fully and sacrificially

  462. all these years.

  463. If I cared for her

  464. for the next 40 years

  465. I would not be out

  466. of her debt.

  467. Duty, however,

  468. can be grim

  469. and stoic,

  470. but there's more.

  471. I love Muriel.

  472. She is a delight

  473. to me.

  474. Her childlike dependence

  475. and confidence in me,

  476. her warm love,

  477. occasional flashes

  478. of that wit

  479. I used to relish so,

  480. her happy spirit

  481. and tough resilience

  482. in the face

  483. of her continual

  484. distressing frustration.

  485. I don't have to care

  486. for her.

  487. I get to.

  488. It's a high honor

  489. to care for so wonderful

  490. a person.

  491. He sacrificed,

  492. laid down his life

  493. as it were,

  494. and yet found joy

  495. and fulfillment

  496. there.

  497. Shortly after David Ireland's

  498. young wife got pregnant,

  499. David found out

  500. he had a disease

  501. like Lou Gehrig's

  502. and his body began

  503. to shut down rapidly.

  504. He realized

  505. that he may not meet

  506. his child.

  507. So he decided

  508. to do some parenting

  509. through letters,

  510. now published

  511. in a book called

  512. Letters to an Unborn Child.

  513. He introduces

  514. his baby boy

  515. to his mother

  516. this way.

  517. My child,

  518. I want you to know

  519. what your mother is like.

  520. She is absolutely

  521. incredible.

  522. I think I can make

  523. it clear to you

  524. by just telling you

  525. what she has to do

  526. when we go out

  527. to eat at night.

  528. When we go out

  529. to a restaurant,

  530. this is what she has to do.

  531. Because I'm a quadriplegic

  532. now and in a wheelchair,

  533. she has to bathe me,

  534. dress me,

  535. empty the urine

  536. and fecal bags

  537. that are strapped

  538. to my legs,

  539. then put me

  540. in the wheelchair,

  541. drive me out

  542. to the garage,

  543. open the garage,

  544. open the door,

  545. get out aboard,

  546. pull up the arm

  547. on my chair,

  548. slide me across

  549. the board,

  550. put me in the car,

  551. put down the arm,

  552. fold up the chair,

  553. open the trunk,

  554. put in the chair,

  555. close the trunk,

  556. close the door,

  557. get in the car,

  558. back it out,

  559. close the garage door

  560. and drive to the restaurant.

  561. When we get there,

  562. the whole process

  563. is reversed.

  564. We sit down

  565. at a table,

  566. she feeds me,

  567. wipes the drool

  568. from my mouth

  569. because I can barely eat,

  570. gets up,

  571. pays the check

  572. and then the whole process

  573. is reversed again.

  574. Go out to the car,

  575. open the door,

  576. take off the arm,

  577. put down the board,

  578. slide me across,

  579. put down the arm,

  580. fold up the chair,

  581. go to the back,

  582. open the trunk,

  583. put up the chair,

  584. close the trunk,

  585. get in the car,

  586. drive.

  587. Get to the garage,

  588. up goes the garage door,

  589. everything else reversed,

  590. take me in,

  591. clean me,

  592. empty the fecal

  593. and urine bags,

  594. bathe me,

  595. put me in my pajamas

  596. and lay me in bed.

  597. And then he says this,

  598. Son,

  599. these are her last words to me.

  600. Thank you, honey,

  601. for taking me out

  602. to eat tonight.

  603. That's tenacious faithfulness

  604. at not letting go.

  605. Sacrificial love

  606. that honors the weak

  607. and the seemingly undeserving.

  608. What beautiful pictures

  609. of how Jesus cherishes

  610. and cares for his bride,

  611. right?

  612. That's how he loves you.

  613. And so often,

  614. the picture we present

  615. tells a different story.

  616. A story of Prince Charming

  617. turning up his nose

  618. at Cinderella,

  619. sending her away from him.

  620. Do you see why God

  621. takes divorce so seriously?

  622. Yes, he wants to spare us

  623. the pain,

  624. but ultimately,

  625. what's his heart?

  626. He's telling the world

  627. a story.

  628. The good news,

  629. the good news of great joy

  630. for all people

  631. and right at the climax

  632. of this story,

  633. divorce seeks to rewrite it.

  634. Seeks to tell a different one

  635. with a different ending.

  636. And that's why we as a church

  637. seek to take divorce

  638. seriously as well.

  639. It's not to be difficult,

  640. but to protect the glory

  641. of the story of Jesus' love for us

  642. and believing that God's design

  643. is best for us too,

  644. even in the pain.

  645. That may well mean

  646. some hard situations

  647. and difficult decisions.

  648. I don't have the time

  649. to go into this morning

  650. as we wrestle with broken covenants.

  651. It happens.

  652. But in the midst of that,

  653. focusing on the glorious purpose

  654. for marriage

  655. really does change things.

  656. Think about it in your own marriage.

  657. Be honest.

  658. What's your goal

  659. in your marriage?

  660. Or in a potential marriage

  661. that you're thinking about.

  662. You see,

  663. if I prioritize

  664. personal fulfillment

  665. in marriage,

  666. I actually overemphasize

  667. and idolize marriage

  668. as though there's someone

  669. or some relationship

  670. that could completely fulfill me.

  671. And at the same time,

  672. I underemphasize

  673. the glorious purpose

  674. of marriage.

  675. I make it a consumer contract

  676. to stay in while it serves me

  677. rather than an unbreakable covenant

  678. that serves God's mission

  679. and His glory

  680. in the world.

  681. So practically,

  682. if my purpose

  683. is self-fulfillment,

  684. then how do I have to act?

  685. Well, I have to deny

  686. any sin or weakness in myself.

  687. That doesn't fit.

  688. I have to redefine marriage

  689. by my desires,

  690. what I want it to look like

  691. and feel like

  692. and reach for divorce quickly

  693. when they're threatened

  694. or almost as bad.

  695. Even if I stay,

  696. I begin to tell the wrong story.

  697. It's one about me

  698. where I'm the hero.

  699. On the other hand,

  700. if my purpose

  701. is telling the story

  702. of Christ's love

  703. for His church,

  704. then I can actually acknowledge

  705. sin

  706. and true forgiveness

  707. because in those moments,

  708. we can actually best

  709. tell the story, right?

  710. The story that's about grace

  711. and redemption

  712. in the lowest moments

  713. with Jesus as the hero

  714. and the great lover,

  715. not me as the one

  716. who's perfect.

  717. See, the miracle of marriage

  718. is not two relatively

  719. compatible people

  720. surviving in the same house

  721. for 50 years.

  722. But rather,

  723. the miracle that reflects

  724. the miracle of God's love

  725. is two people

  726. at great cost

  727. to themselves

  728. loving the unlovely

  729. and the unworthy.

  730. That's the story,

  731. isn't it?

  732. That's what marriage

  733. is to be about.

  734. And so in the low points,

  735. we get a chance

  736. to tell that story

  737. beautifully.

  738. It's why we honor

  739. marriage now

  740. because of the glorious,

  741. great love story

  742. that it's telling.

  743. So Jesus speaks

  744. certainly strong

  745. and direct words

  746. to the Pharisees

  747. and to us

  748. to elevate

  749. the seriousness

  750. of God's law.

  751. Verse 18 again,

  752. everyone who divorces

  753. his wife

  754. and marries another

  755. commits adultery

  756. and he who marries

  757. a woman divorced

  758. from her husband

  759. commits adultery.

  760. It's a perfect law

  761. and he won't tolerate

  762. our lowering the standard,

  763. will he?

  764. He doesn't want

  765. marriage redefined,

  766. divorce made easy.

  767. And so for some of you

  768. this morning,

  769. perhaps it's painful

  770. to think back

  771. through things

  772. you've endured

  773. in your life.

  774. Hard moments,

  775. deep grief,

  776. wrestling with God

  777. about what's next.

  778. Man, if you're there

  779. this morning,

  780. love to walk with you

  781. through that

  782. because there's not

  783. much that's more

  784. difficult than this

  785. because it's a battleground

  786. where God's telling

  787. a story and Satan

  788. wants to write

  789. a different one.

  790. And we need each other

  791. in that.

  792. And you may be sitting

  793. there and hearing

  794. words this strong

  795. from Jesus

  796. like adultery

  797. and feel someone

  798. pointing a finger

  799. at you

  800. and saying,

  801. adultery.

  802. You feel you've got

  803. a scarlet letter

  804. on you

  805. because of your

  806. divorce

  807. or your

  808. unfaithfulness.

  809. In just a minute,

  810. I'm going to do

  811. something that

  812. sounds very

  813. unpastoral.

  814. To have all those

  815. who've committed

  816. adultery

  817. raise their hands.

  818. First, let me remind

  819. you of God's law.

  820. Exodus chapter 20.

    Exodus 20 chapter mention

  821. You shall not

  822. commit adultery.

  823. Adultery.

  824. Matthew chapter 5

    Matthew 5:27

  825. verse 27.

  826. You have heard

  827. that it was said

  828. you shall not

  829. commit adultery.

  830. But I say to you

  831. that everyone

  832. who looks at a woman

  833. with lustful intent

  834. has already committed

  835. adultery

  836. with her

  837. in his heart.

  838. Then,

  839. in our passage,

  840. Luke 16,

  841. Jesus says to them,

  842. you are those

  843. who justify yourselves

  844. before men,

  845. but God knows

  846. your hearts.

  847. For what is exalted

  848. among men

  849. is an abomination

  850. in the sight of God.

  851. And then he goes

  852. to apply it

  853. to divorce and marriage.

  854. Everyone who divorces

  855. his wife and marries

  856. another commits adultery.

  857. And he who marries

  858. a woman divorced

  859. from her husband

  860. commits adultery.

  861. And we now understand

  862. that what Jesus

  863. is saying

  864. in this passage

  865. is much harder

  866. than we might realize.

  867. That if we have

  868. ever longed

  869. for marriage

  870. or for anything else

  871. other than God

  872. to fulfill us,

  873. that's adultery.

  874. adultery.

  875. If we have ever

  876. had a less than

  877. glorious view

  878. of marriage,

  879. whether in our own

  880. or toward another's,

  881. that's adultery.

  882. If we have said things

  883. or avoided saying things

  884. rather than embrace

  885. the truth of God's Word

  886. on divorce

  887. or anything else,

  888. that's adultery

  889. in our hearts.

  890. Now with a fresh reminder

  891. of God's perfect standard,

  892. let's go back

  893. to the hands being raised

  894. and I'll start.

  895. All those who have

  896. committed adultery

  897. according to all

  898. of God's holy law,

  899. raise your hand with me.

  900. There's no one left

  901. to throw stones.

  902. There's no one

  903. who's got it together

  904. and can accuse you.

  905. Adultery is a sin,

  906. but it's not

  907. the unforgivable sin.

  908. And that's why

  909. God gives us His law

  910. so that we see

  911. His holy character

  912. and pray that the Holy Spirit

  913. would work in each of us

  914. that we would,

  915. in our friendships,

  916. and if appropriate,

  917. as spouses

  918. and as a church family,

  919. that we would love

  920. with purifying grace

  921. and sacrificial love

  922. and tenacious faithfulness.

  923. We would see how He does that

  924. and long to reflect that

  925. to those around us.

  926. And,

  927. and He gives us His law

  928. set perfectly

  929. beyond what we can measure up to

  930. so that,

  931. seeing our sin,

  932. so that realizing

  933. we can't fix the problem,

  934. we would turn

  935. to our Savior

  936. to find forgiveness

  937. and to actually believe

  938. that as far as the east

  939. is from the west,

  940. so far has He removed

  941. our transgressions from us.

  942. Amen?

  943. We read it earlier,

  944. do you believe that?

  945. Has He wiped

  946. the adultery

  947. that far away

  948. from you?

  949. Don't lower the standard.

  950. Embrace the Savior.

  951. It almost makes you wonder

  952. why God allows divorce

  953. at all,

  954. doesn't it?

  955. You remember how Jesus,

  956. when He allowed

  957. for divorce

  958. reluctantly,

  959. said,

  960. well,

  961. only because of the hardness

  962. of human hearts,

  963. is divorce even permitted?

  964. Why?

  965. Why then does it have to be?

  966. It's because He's saying

  967. human hearts

  968. are not divine.

  969. We can't love

  970. as perfectly,

  971. as infinitely,

  972. as eternally

  973. as God can.

  974. And it's because

  975. human marriage

  976. is not ultimate.

  977. See, the ultimate hope

  978. of the gospel

  979. is not in your marriage

  980. now being a perfect

  981. reflection of God's

  982. love for you.

  983. The hope,

  984. the promise

  985. to us

  986. is of the ultimate

  987. marriage

  988. where your perfect

  989. spouse

  990. removes

  991. the scarlet letter.

  992. He's the perfect one.

  993. In fact,

  994. He's the only one

  995. standing

  996. who could

  997. rightly judge you

  998. for that.

  999. And instead of

  1000. judging you for that,

  1001. He does what?

  1002. He removes it

  1003. from you

  1004. and He not only

1005. takes that off of you

  1006. and removes your sin

1007. as far as the east

  1008. is from the west,

  1009. He clothes you

  1010. with white robes

  1011. in glorious beauty

  1012. and He comes

  1013. to you

  1014. to be with you

  1015. forever,

  1016. He promises.

  1017. No divorce

  1018. to endure

  1019. ever.

  1020. He's the perfectly

  1021. faithful

  1022. spouse

  1023. and He loves you

  1024. passionately.

  1025. Even unlovely

  1026. you

  1027. in your worst moments

  1028. in fact,

  1029. His promise

  1030. is to make you

  1031. lovely

  1032. because He loves you.

  1033. If your marital

  1034. or relational

  1035. experience

  1036. makes you feel

  1037. unlovely now,

  1038. know that Jesus

  1039. will make you

  1040. lovely

  1041. and will love you

  1042. forever.

  1043. Let's pray.

  1044. Jesus,

  1045. we give you

  1046. thanks

  1047. for a love

  1048. we don't deserve

  1049. and could never

  1050. earn.

  1051. We confess

  1052. we like better

  1053. the idea

  1054. of fixing things

  1055. ourselves,

  1056. but we need

  1057. you

  1058. to rescue us.

  1059. none of us

  1060. stands

  1061. on our own

  1062. without our

  1063. great need

  1064. for you

  1065. and so we

  1066. thank you

  1067. that you love

  1068. us.

  1069. We rejoice

  1070. in the story

  1071. that you give

  1072. to us

  1073. and that you give

  1074. us the privilege

  1075. of telling

  1076. and we plead

  1077. for your grace

  1078. that we would

  1079. tell it

  1080. in all of our

  1081. relationships,

  1082. in our marriages,

  1083. in this church

  1084. family.

  1085. Father,

  1086. would we love

  1087. and would we

  1088. especially love

  1089. where the

  1090. brokenness of

  1091. life interrupts

  1092. and knocks us

  1093. down?

  1094. Would we be there

  1095. and love each

  1096. other well?

  1097. In Jesus' name,

  1098. Amen.
