  2. Our passion is to experience and express grace. Join us.

  3. Good Friday. What makes this Good Friday good?

  4. Is it candy? Certainly plenty of that to come.

  5. Not that. Maybe it's people.

  6. Maybe it's the focus.

  7. But more than that, it's the cross of Christ.

  8. This is good in the purest sense of the word.

  9. Not an enjoyment sense, but a holiness.

  10. The cross.

  11. The vertical relationship between man and God,

  12. which changes every relationship that we have here on earth.

  13. If one is right, the other is affected.

  14. So we have an opportunity to focus tonight.

  15. So let's do that.

  16. Let's look at Matthew chapter 27, verses 45 through 54.

    Matthew 27:45–54

  17. Now from the sixth hour, there was darkness over all the land until the ninth hour.

  18. And about the ninth hour, Jesus cried out with a loud voice saying,

  19. Eli, Eli, lama sagbaktani?

  20. That is, my God, my God, why have you forsaken me?

  21. And some of the bystanders hearing it said,

  22. This man is calling Elijah.

  23. And one of them at once ran and took a sponge,

  24. filled it with sour wine,

  25. put it on a reed, and gave it to him to drink.

  26. But the other said,

  27. Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to save him.

  28. And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice

  29. and yielded up his spirit.

  30. And behold,

  31. the curtain of the temple was torn in two,

  32. from top to bottom,

  33. and the earth shook,

  34. and the rocks were split.

  35. The tombs also were opened,

  36. and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised.

  37. And coming out of the tombs after his resurrection,

  38. they went into the holy city and appeared to many.

  39. When the centurion and those who were with him,

  40. keeping watch over Jesus,

  41. saw the earthquake and what took place,

  42. they were filled with awe and said,

  43. Truly, this was the Son of God.

  44. darkness,

  45. cries,

  46. mocking,

  47. waiting,

  48. doubt,

  49. innocence,

  50. betrayal,

  51. pain,

  52. unimaginable pain,

  53. fear,

  54. hope,

  55. death,

  56. earthquakes,

  57. open tombs,

  58. peace,

  59. this was a day like no other.

  60. What would it have been like to be there?

  61. To see the darkness

  62. in the middle of the day?

  63. To hear the cries of Jesus on the cross?

  64. To hear those mocking one you loved,

  65. or perhaps to be the one mocking

  66. that you doubted?

  67. To see the innocence,

  68. to know he was innocent and he was betrayed,

  69. and to see his pain and his screams.

  70. He's looking up and screaming.

  71. And to see fear and hope and then death.

  72. The words of the centurion,

  73. they,

  74. in verse 54,

  75. they,

  76. and the people that were with him,

  77. they sum it up,

  78. what it would have been like.

  79. Truly,

  80. this was the Son of God,

  81. he said.

  82. Now,

  83. this was a man who had the respect

  84. and commanded so many.

  85. We don't know if he really believed.

  86. Some translations say,

  87. a son of God,

  88. but he was in shock.

  89. Utter shock.

  90. Imagine,

  91. if you're there,

  92. you see this,

  93. you turn and you see the temple curtain torn,

  94. this massive thick curtain

  95. that no man could rip,

  96. but it's torn straight down the middle.

  97. And what used to separate you

  98. from going into God,

  99. where you had one go on your behalf,

  100. you could now see straight through.

  101. It would definitely mess with your mind.

  102. Here's the truth.

  103. We remember that Jesus said,

  104. these things had to happen.

  105. Right?

  106. There's no life

  107. if there's no payment for sin.

  108. There's no payment for sin

  109. if there's no bloodshed

  110. and there's no forgiveness of sins,

  111. past,

  112. present,

  113. and future,

  114. unless the bloodshed

  115. is of one greater than time itself.

  116. And there is no one greater than time itself

  117. except for the author of time.

  118. Truly this was

  119. the Son of God?

  120. Is Jesus

  121. just a was

  122. to you today?

  123. Or as Revelation says,

  124. is he a was

  125. and is

  126. and is to come?

  127. He was there.

  128. He was here.

  129. He did die.

  130. And it was

  131. so that we will be with him forever.

  132. But for now,

  133. if we were there,

  134. silence.

  135. The disciples,

  136. we would see them scatter.

  137. We would see the fear in their eyes.

  138. We would see them weeping.

  139. We would see them hiding.

  140. We would see them trying to comfort.

  141. We would see some hope.

  142. And today,

  143. in our silence,

  144. in our hearts,

  145. don't we scatter?

  146. Don't we fear?

  147. Don't we weep

  148. if we admit it?

  149. Don't we hide

  150. and we comfort

  151. and we're just clinging on

  152. to find some hope?

  153. Do we really understand

  154. the meaning of this cross?

  155. We have an opportunity

  156. to focus on that.

  157. One of my friends

  158. texted me a few weeks ago

  159. that they saw

  160. that Hershey's was selling

  161. a chocolate cross.

  162. He said,

  163. is this sacrilegious?

  164. You know,

  165. we can't sugarcoat this.

  166. I'm not trying to knock Hershey's,

  167. but do we really get

  168. what's going on here?

  169. Dan Doriani writes

  170. that the cross

  171. was originally an emblem

  172. of pain,

  173. shame,

  174. criminality,

  175. and death.

  176. R.C. Sproul says

  177. that the cross

  178. is tragedy and victory

  179. in the same moment.

  180. It's scandal

  181. and honor,

  182. defeat and triumph,

  183. shame and esteem.

  184. The cross represents

  185. the great suffering

  186. of Christ

  187. and the suffering

  188. far transcends

  189. physical pain.

  190. It's more than

  191. a human death.

  192. It's an atonement.

  193. Atonement.

  194. What does that mean?

  195. It's,

  196. in Christian thought,

  197. an atonement

  198. is that act

  199. by which God

  200. and man

  201. are brought together

  202. in a personal relationship.

  203. The term was originally

  204. from an Anglo-Saxon word,

  205. meaning making at one.

  206. So, hence,

  207. at one-ment.

  208. So,

  209. it presupposes

  210. that there's a separation

  211. that has occurred

  212. between God

  213. and man

  214. and that human beings,

  215. if we're to know God,

  216. to have fellowship

  217. with God,

  218. there has to be

  219. an atonement

  220. to make us one,

  221. an at-one-ment.

  222. This was the most

  223. torturous instrument

  224. of death

  225. and punishment

  226. that existed.

  227. Think electric chair.

  228. Okay?

  229. This was, though,

  230. the only way

  231. for the way.

  232. And it was our sin

  233. that nailed him there.

  234. My sin,

  235. your sin,

  236. made God the Son

  237. bleed and die.

  238. Our sin

  239. caused the death.

  240. Our disobedience

  241. split his side.

  242. Our brokenness

  243. crowned him

  244. with thorns.

  245. Our darkness

  246. crucified the light,

  247. the one who is life.

  248. In him was the life.

  249. And the life

  250. was the light

  251. of men,

  252. but the light

  253. shines in the darkness

  254. and the darkness

  255. has not overcome it.

  256. Verse 45 says that,

  257. tells us about

  258. this darkness.

  259. From the sixth hour

  260. there was darkness

  261. over all the land

  262. until the ninth hour.

  263. This was not

  264. a normal darkness.

  265. It wasn't like a storm.

  266. This would have been

  267. understood as

  268. dark in daylight.

  269. Imagine the sun

  270. went out.

  271. And this would have

  272. meant that it was

  273. dark from noon

  274. until three o'clock.

  275. The Jews and the Greeks

  276. would have understood

  277. this darkness

  278. as an omen.

  279. It was an omen

  280. of judgment.

  281. Jesus here

  282. was enduring

  283. God the Father's

  284. judgment on sin.

  285. His cries of anguish,

  286. they were true

  287. because he was

  288. separated

  289. from God the Father

  290. in this moment

  291. in outer darkness

  292. so that we may be

  293. welcomed into the

  294. Father's arms

  295. in eternal light.

  296. Verse 46

  297. says that,

  298. Jesus cried out

  299. with a loud voice

  300. saying,

  301. Eli, Eli,

  302. lama sagwaktani.

  303. That is my God,

  304. my God,

  305. why have you

  306. forsaken me?

  307. Why have you

  308. forsaken me?

  309. Forsaken.

  310. What does that mean?

  311. It means to abandon.

  312. It means to leave.

  313. It means to reject.

  314. The innocent one

  315. who has known

  316. nothing but intimacy

  317. with his Father

  318. is for a moment

  319. completely rejected.

  320. And it's because of us.

  321. God can't look upon sin

  322. and smile.

  323. A righteous judge

  324. cannot not punish

  325. or he is no longer righteous.

  326. Yet Jesus chose

  327. to do this

  328. to do this

  329. for us.

  330. Dr. Doriani writes

  331. that at the moment

  332. when Jesus bore our sin,

  333. the Father was distant

  334. because he was too pure

  335. to look upon sin.

  336. So for those moments,

  337. Jesus was forsaken,

  338. abandoned,

  339. rejected.

  340. Yet the Father

  341. did not forsake him

  342. absolutely

  343. or forever.

  344. We know this.

  345. He still loved his son.

  346. He never forgot

  347. his plan

  348. to reconcile

  349. our lost race

  350. to himself.

  351. As soon as Jesus

  352. finished bearing our sin,

  353. fellowship would be restored

  354. perfectly

  355. and forever.

  356. After that cry,

  357. my God,

  358. my God,

  359. why have you forsaken me?

  360. Why me?

  361. He had pain.

  362. But after that moment

  363. came the death,

  364. that eerie

  365. silence of death.

  366. If you've ever been around it,

  367. you know it

  368. and you never forget it.

  369. Christ's body

  370. was lifeless

  371. and still.

  372. And in these moments,

  373. when it seems

  374. that God is gone,

  375. he's very present.

  376. He's overcoming death

  377. and killing it

  378. and allowing a relationship

  379. to take place

  380. between us

  381. and him.

  382. He's killing

  383. and conquering death.

  384. And in three days,

  385. everybody will see.

  386. But for now,

  387. silence,

  388. darkness,

  389. grief.

  390. But in the silence,

  391. God is working.

  392. In the darkness,

  393. God is working.

  394. In Jesus' cries,

  395. God is working.

  396. In Jesus' unimaginable pain,

  397. God is working.

  398. And in Jesus' death,

  399. God is alive.

  400. But why?

  401. Why that death?

  402. Again,

  403. atonement.

  404. Somebody had to take

  405. the wrath of God.

  406. Blood must be shed

  407. to forgive the offense.

  408. Light cannot exist

  409. in darkness.

  410. So he died.

  411. So that your sins

  412. can be forgiven.

  413. So that you may know

  414. the love of Christ.

  415. That you may know

  416. the love of God

  417. through faith in Jesus Christ.

  418. So that you can be certain

  419. that in your darkness,

  420. God is working.

  421. And in your cries,

  422. God is working.

  423. And in your pain,

  424. right now,

  425. God is working.

  426. And in your death,

  427. if you have faith in Christ,

  428. you may be alive

  429. forever

  430. with him.

  431. But don't miss the good

  432. in this Good Friday

  433. because sometimes

  434. in the darkness,

  435. it's hard to see

  436. the beauty,

  437. isn't it?

  438. One time I was driving

  439. down 431

  440. over the mountain

  441. and on one side

  442. of the mountain,

  443. there was light

  444. and sunlight

  445. coming down.

  446. It was beautiful.

  447. I could see every detail

  448. of the trees.

  449. But on this side,

  450. it was dark

  451. and everything was blurry.

  452. The same beauty existed,

  453. but the darkness clouded it.

  454. Well, in this darkness

  455. is light.

  456. In this darkness

  457. is beauty.

  458. Because the light

  459. was conquering the darkness

  460. and in the darkness,

  461. God is shining.

  462. And here's the beauty.

  463. That you, sinner,

  464. me, sinner,

  465. are guilty of killing

  466. the Son of God

  467. with our sins.

  468. Yet,

  469. you are offered freedom

  470. from the punishment

  471. that you deserve.

  472. Why?

  473. Because it is finished.

  474. To tell us die.

  475. It is finished.

  476. Every drop of blood

  477. has paid

  478. for every sin

  479. that you can possibly commit

  480. or conceive

  481. or think about.

  482. But,

  483. only if you receive

  484. that payment.

  485. You do have to take it.

  486. And that's called faith.

  487. Verse 50,

  488. you see that Jesus

  489. cried out again

  490. with a loud voice

  491. that says

  492. he yielded up

  493. his spirit.

  494. That means that he died.

  495. He was still in control.

  496. He had authority

  497. to give up his spirit.

  498. But you were worth it.

  499. But what did that accomplish?

  500. Two things.

  501. Two big words.

  502. Propitiation

  503. and expiation.

  504. That's what the atonement

  505. accomplished.

  506. The death of Christ,

  507. as R.C. Sproul writes,

  508. was both a propitiation

  509. and an expiation.

  510. Propitiation refers

  511. to the turning away

  512. of wrath

  513. by an offering.

  514. God's wrath

  515. is now satisfied.

  516. His justice

  517. is met

  518. by the sacrifice

  519. and the blood

  520. of Jesus Christ.

  521. Expiation refers

  522. to the covering

  523. of sins.

  524. By the atonement,

  525. the at-one-ment,

  526. our sins

  527. are now removed

  528. from us.

  529. The atonement

  530. satisfies both

  531. the demands

  532. of God the Father

  533. and the needs

  534. of Christ's people.

  535. That such a double

  536. transaction

  537. can be achieved

  538. by one person

  539. and one event,

  540. R.C. Sproul says,

  541. is a matter

  542. of eternal glory.

  543. This was no

  544. ordinary death.

  545. This was a payment.

  546. This was a mission.

  547. And the mission

  548. was accomplished.

  549. Paid in full.

  550. Completely successful.

  551. It is finished,

  552. as Dan Doriani writes,

  553. means that God's

  554. displeasure with us

  555. is finished.

  556. If you have faith,

  557. acknowledging

  558. your need

  559. for forgiveness

  560. and your inability

  561. to achieve it

  562. on your own,

  563. if you believe

  564. that He died for you,

  565. and you have

  566. certainty in the things

  567. not seen,

  568. the eternal things,

  569. then He promises

  570. to adopt you

  571. into His family

  572. as brothers,

  573. as sisters,

  574. as daughters,

  575. as sons of the

  576. Most High God,

  577. Yahweh,

  578. heirs of His kingdom.

  579. Do you believe

  580. this?

  581. Do you believe

  582. in Jesus Christ?

  583. Maybe you're here

  584. and you have

  585. and you've forgotten

  586. your way.

  587. Maybe you're here

  588. and you never have.

  589. it's never too late

  590. to turn to Christ

  591. until we don't have

  592. the opportunity anymore.

  593. You know,

  594. knowing someone

  595. who knows about Jesus

  596. is not the same thing

  597. as knowing Jesus.

  598. Reading a book

  599. is not the same thing

  600. as knowing the author.

  601. I was with a man

  602. this week,

  603. a dear man,

  604. and I asked him

  605. when he came to know Jesus

  606. and he said,

  607. well,

  608. later in life,

  609. but he realized

  610. that he was religious

  611. for so long

  612. that he had no relationship.

  613. Are you religious?

  614. America is very religious.

  615. There's a difference

  616. between religion

  617. and a relationship

  618. with the creator

  619. of the universe.

  620. For me,

  621. I sat at 16 years old

  622. not knowing anything

  623. about Jesus

  624. in a room of people

  625. who prayed to him

  626. for an hour

  627. and I realized,

  628. I have no idea

  629. who you're talking to.

  630. I started asking questions

  631. and I've been different

  632. ever since.

  633. Do you believe

  634. that if you just read

  635. the medicine bottle

  636. that tells how

  637. it's going to cure you,

  638. that it's the same

  639. as taking the pill?

  640. Well,

  641. Christianity

  642. is the difference,

  643. the difference

  644. between Christianity

  645. and every other religion.

  646. I've heard it said

  647. it's the difference

  648. between two words,

  649. doing and done.

  650. What are you doing

  651. to try to make

  652. that relationship

  653. right with God

  654. because Jesus

  655. has already done it.

  656. This is the only religion

  657. that offers

  658. true relationship

  659. with God

  660. on your behalf,

  661. asking nothing of you

  662. but to believe it.

  663. that we may be

  664. children of light

  665. shining as stars

  666. in this dark world.

  667. Do you believe that?

  668. Do you believe

  669. that you can shine

  670. the love and the redemption

  671. and forgiveness of Jesus

  672. everywhere you go?

  673. That's why he died.

  674. That you have a purpose

  675. right now.

  676. Whatever you do,

  677. wherever you work,

  678. he will use you

  679. to change this world.

  680. It can be a smile,

  681. it can be a hug,

  682. it can be a listening ear,

  683. it can be a shoulder

  684. to cry on

  685. but he's using you.

  686. I'll tell you what,

  687. it's not a paycheck.

  688. You don't have to work

  689. for God's love.

  690. This father loves you perfectly

  691. and the only time

  692. that he had that wrath

  693. against you,

  694. his son took it

  695. for you.

  696. If you've ever held

  697. a baby in your hands

  698. and think how beautiful it is,

  699. that's what God thinks of you

  700. if you have faith

  701. in Jesus Christ

  702. and it's all because

  703. of what happened

  704. on that cross.

  705. You're free

  706. to love

  707. and to be loved.

  708. And to hurt

  709. and to be healed

  710. and to hope.

  711. After Jesus died,

  712. three significant things

  713. happened.

  714. The curtain temple

  715. was torn

  716. from top to bottom.

  717. This meant that now

  718. we can approach

  719. the throne of grace

  720. with confidence

  721. because there is one

  722. who is both man

  723. and God,

  724. whose sacrifice

  725. paid for the sins

  726. of the people

  727. temporarily

  728. and eternally

  729. forever.

  730. And he reigns

  731. in heaven

  732. guaranteeing

  733. that that is true.

  734. And the temple

  735. being torn

  736. shows that you can

  737. walk straight to God.

  738. Now,

  739. you don't need anybody

  740. but the great high priest

  741. Jesus Christ.

  742. Then there was

  743. an earthquake

  744. because the foundation

  745. of the entire cosmos

  746. was shaken.

  747. Sin has been forgiven

  748. and now Jesus

  749. is going to make

  750. all things new.

  751. All of them.

  752. You ever thought

  753. about that?

  754. I want to visit

  755. another planet

  756. with Jesus one day.

  757. I can.

  758. You can.

  759. He controls

  760. everything.

  761. And then the tombs

  762. were opened.

  763. People really walked

  764. out of the grave.

  765. Christians who had

  766. fallen asleep

  767. as they call it.

  768. This was a

  769. cataclysmic

  770. event.

  771. God is Father,

  772. Son,

  773. and Holy Spirit

  774. and Jesus is God

  775. and his death

  776. offers us

  777. cleansing

  778. forever.

  779. Relationship

  780. with God.

  781. He really is

  782. who he said he was.

  783. And he's not just a was.

  784. He's the son of God.

  785. Not a son

  786. or a God.

  787. He offers you

  788. eternal life

  789. and he paid

  790. the death penalty

  791. for your sins.

  792. And he offers you

  793. his perfect righteousness.

  794. I don't want to

  795. sugar coat this cross.

  796. I don't want to

  797. put chocolate on it.

  798. On this cross,

  799. this instrument of death

  800. and destruction,

  801. Jesus absorbed

  802. the wrath of God

  803. that you deserve,

  804. that I deserve,

  805. and he offers you

  806. eternal life.

  807. This is serious,

  808. y'all.

  809. It's serious.

  810. Do you know Jesus

  811. as your Savior?

  812. Know him.

  813. Does he know you?

  814. If you don't,

  815. remember the Passover?

  816. There was the angel

  817. of destruction

  818. and it passed over

  819. all of those

  820. who had the blood

  821. of the lamb

  822. on their doorposts.

  823. If you don't

  824. know Jesus,

  825. you're saying,

  826. I don't want you

  827. to pass over my sins.

  828. I think I can do it better.

  829. I think that

  830. wasn't enough.

  831. I'll take it from here.

  832. And the wrath

  833. that you will absorb

  834. is in a place

  835. called hell

  836. that is a very real place.

  837. I don't want anybody

  838. to go there.

  839. Jesus spent more time

  840. talking about that

  841. than any other place.

  842. And I don't say that

  843. to scare you.

  844. I say that to let you know

  845. that Jesus is the only way.

  846. And I don't want you

  847. to choose to pass over that.

  848. The free gift

  849. offered to you

  850. because it would be

  851. payable at your death.

  852. Hell is also

  853. what he took

  854. on the cross

  855. so that you don't have to.

  856. Did you know that

  857. John Calvin,

  858. the great theologian,

  859. he struggled

  860. with the Apostles'

  861. Creed phrase,

  862. he descended into hell.

  863. Not the accuracy of it,

  864. but where it was placed

  865. in the actual creed.

  866. Rather than

  867. the traditional order

  868. which says,

  869. who suffered under

  870. Pontius Pilate,

  871. was crucified,

  872. dead,

  873. and buried,

  874. he descended into hell.

  875. Calvin wanted it

  876. to be reordered

  877. to say,

  878. who suffered under

  879. Pontius Pilate,

  880. was crucified,

  881. descended into hell,

  882. dead,

  883. and buried.

  884. Why?

  885. Because Jesus received

  886. the punishment of hell

  887. while he was on the cross.

  888. The punishment

  889. that he saves us from.

  890. But he saves us

  891. for something great,

  892. to renew the world

  893. until he renews

  894. the entire cosmos.

  895. On the cross

  896. in the silence,

  897. God was reconciling

  898. sinners to himself

  899. as he absorbed

  900. the wrath of God,

  901. suffered the hell

  902. that we deserve,

  903. and now offers us

  904. the eternal life

  905. that only he could hurt.

  906. But now death is dead.

  907. Love has won.

  908. Christ has conquered.

  909. Is Jesus just a was,

  910. as the centurion

  911. and those looking on said,

  912. or is he your Savior

  913. who was,

  914. and is,

  915. and is to come.

  916. There's no more payment

  917. necessary because it is finished.

  918. And if you let Jesus

  919. pay the debt,

  920. you are free.

  921. Free to have a relationship

  922. with God.

  923. Free to have purpose

  924. and meaning in life

  925. like no other.

  926. And free to live forever.

  927. How do you accept that gift?

  928. You simply ask,

  929. help me,

  930. Lord.

  931. ask him to give you that gift.

  932. I love you.

  933. You're not alone.

  934. You have a purpose.

  935. You have a place

  936. to belong

  937. in God's people.

  938. Don't wait to ask.

  939. It's never too late.

  940. Let me pray for us.

  941. Father,

  942. you're real.

  943. And people in here

  944. need you

  945. in so many different ways.

  946. I don't know where they are,

  947. but I know they hurt

  948. because they're human.

  949. And Lord Jesus,

  950. I pray

  951. that if anyone in here

  952. does not know you,

  953. that they would simply

  954. right now

  955. ask,

  956. come into my life.

  957. thank you for dying for me.

  958. Give me the purpose

  959. and meaning

  960. I'm looking for

  961. in everything besides you.

  962. And if they're here

  963. and they've known you

  964. for a lifetime,

  965. give them the fervor

  966. that only you can give

  967. of the Holy Spirit.

  968. Remind them

  969. of who you've called them to be

  970. and fill them,

  971. Lord Jesus,

  972. with the power

  973. that we will hear about

  974. on Sunday.

  975. We love you

  976. and we lift these things to you

  977. only in the name

  978. of the atoning one himself,

  979. Jesus Christ,

  980. who we believe.

  981. Thank you for paying our debt.

  982. It is in his name

  983. that I walk straight

  984. into the Holy of Holies

  985. and say,

  986. I love you, Dad.

  987. Amen.
