  1. You are listening to a message from Southwood Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama.

  2. Our passion is to experience and express grace.

  3. Join us.

  4. Such a fun song.

  5. Thank you all.

  6. It's a lot to rejoice in this morning.

  7. Thank you to the one of you who texted me during the song to say you wanted to dance,

  8. but I needed to start it.

  9. I felt that, but you want me to dance in my heart, and that's where you want it to stop.

  10. We'll keep it there.

  11. Part of the beauty in that song is that it tells our story, doesn't it?

  12. It's a story that Scotty Smith talked about last week in terms of desperation and delight.

  13. Did you hear that in there?

  14. I know you heard the delight, but in the words, the desperation of where we found ourselves,

  15. that's at the heart of what it means to be a follower of Jesus, isn't it?

  16. To be so desperately dependent on Him and delighted in what He has done for us.

  17. It's at the heart of what it means to be a community of people who gather together to celebrate Jesus.

  18. That's what we're doing this morning.

  19. We delight in welcoming people into a church family.

  20. Even as they do so, they begin by acknowledging their desperation, right?

  21. They're sinners without hope, except in God's mercy rescuing them.

  22. So on this day where we consider young people and older people trusting Jesus,

  23. promising to follow Jesus as a part of this church,

  24. it's appropriate that in our study of Luke,

  25. we come to a passage where Jesus is telling us what it looks like

  26. to be a part of His community, to follow Him.

  27. I want you to notice this morning as Jesus tells us what His community looks like,

  28. the honesty of it.

  29. The reality that sin and struggle will still be present in this community is not a surprise to Jesus.

  30. In fact, it's where Jesus begins when He's talking about it.

  31. He's going to tell us some really important things that are,

  32. on the one hand, very basic to following Jesus.

  33. Normal, everyday stuff.

  34. And on the other hand, those same things are also so difficult

  35. that it's not an exaggeration to call them supernatural.

  36. Let's listen to Jesus tell about this extraordinary, ordinary Christian community.

  37. And we'll talk about it for a few minutes after we read.

  38. Picking up Jesus' conversation at Luke 17, verse 1.

    Luke 17:1

  39. He's talking now to His disciples.

  40. This is God's holy, inerrant, infallible Word that He gives to us

  41. so that we can know how to have relationship with Him

  42. and that that relationship would transform all our other relationships.

  43. Wow. Let's listen.

  44. He said to His disciples,

  45. Temptations to sin are sure to come,

  46. but woe to the one through whom they come.

  47. It would be better for Him if a millstone were hung around His neck

  48. and He were cast into the sea than that He should cause one of these little ones to sin.

  49. Pay attention to yourselves.

  50. If your brother sins, rebuke him.

  51. And if he repents, forgive him.

  52. And if he sins against you seven times in the day

  53. and turns to you seven times saying,

  54. I repent, you must forgive him.

  55. The apostles said to the Lord,

  56. Increase our faith.

  57. And the Lord said,

  58. If you had faith like a grain of mustard seed,

  59. you could say to this mulberry tree,

  60. Be uprooted and planted in the sea,

  61. and it would obey you.

  62. Will any one of you who has a servant plowing or keeping sheep

  63. say to him when he has come in from the field,

  64. Come at once and sit down at table?

  65. Will he not rather say to him,

  66. Prepare supper for me and dress properly

  67. and serve me while I eat and drink

  68. and afterward you will eat and drink?

  69. Does he thank the servant because he did what was commanded?

  70. So you also,

  71. when you have done all that you were commanded,

  72. say,

  73. We are unworthy servants.

  74. We have only done what was our duty.

  75. Let's pray.

  76. Father, thank You for this,

  77. Your word.

  78. In some ways,

  79. they are hard words for us.

  80. And we ask Your help.

  81. We acknowledge again our need for You,

  82. every one of us.

  83. Come by Your Spirit and teach us,

  84. but also mold us and shape us,

  85. even in ways that are painful,

  86. that help us.

  87. We might know You,

  88. love You,

  89. and live as You've called us to.

  90. We ask in Jesus' name.

  91. Amen.

  92. Before we jump in this morning

  93. to what Jesus tells us

  94. about being a part of His community,

  95. a couple of words to those of you

  96. who don't follow Jesus,

  97. or who maybe aren't sure

  98. that you would really want to.

  99. As we go into this,

  100. as we talk through this passage,

  101. I'm going to point out things

  102. that Christians must take seriously.

  103. And you may well think to yourself

  104. when I say some of them,

  105. well, that's not what I've seen

  106. or experienced

  107. from the Christians I know.

  108. Sounds like a lot of talk to me.

  109. That's fair enough.

  110. You can probably help us see

  111. some blind spots

  112. that we have in these areas

  113. where we don't actually live

  114. like the type of community

  115. that God has called us to.

  116. And I'd welcome that input.

  117. I'd love to hear

  118. where you see that

  119. from me, from us.

  120. We need to know.

  121. But I'd also encourage you

  122. as you listen this morning

  123. to consider

  124. not just other Christians

  125. you've seen,

  126. but Jesus Himself.

  127. What He both calls for

  128. and what He creates

  129. in a community.

  130. Because that's the kind of community

  131. that He is making us into

  132. even if we're not there yet.

  133. So it's the kind of church,

  134. the kind of family

  135. that you too could be a part of.

  136. And notice how essential Jesus is

  137. to sustaining relationships like this.

  138. Notice Jesus as we talk this morning.

  139. First thing in this passage that we see

  140. biblical Christianity takes sin seriously.

  141. And you may be saying,

  142. well, yeah,

  143. that's what Christians are known for, right?

  144. They got that one down.

  145. They're pointing out

  146. everybody else's sin.

  147. That's all I ever hear from them.

  148. That's not what I'm talking about.

  149. It's not what this means.

  150. It's quite the opposite, in fact.

  151. When I say we take sin seriously,

  152. I mean first and foremost

  153. our own sin

  154. within the community of believers

  155. in Jesus.

  156. Jesus begins

  157. by saying

  158. temptations to sin

  159. are sure to come.

  160. It's certain.

  161. I love how Jesus recognizes

  162. that we will struggle.

  163. It's a repeated theme

  164. in the Gospel of Luke

  165. when Jesus talks about

  166. His followers

  167. and that community.

  168. Commentator Dane Ortland

  169. says it this way,

  170. the fundamental distinction

  171. between churches

  172. is not that some of them

  173. have sinners

  174. and others do not.

  175. The fundamental distinction

  176. is that some churches

  177. have honest sinners

  178. and other churches

  179. have self-protecting sinners.

  180. The question is not

  181. whether we are sinful or not,

  182. but whether or not

  183. we are honest about it.

  184. But,

  185. even though those things

  186. are certain,

  187. what's Jesus saying here?

  188. Woe to the one

  189. through whom they come.

  190. It would be better for Him

  191. if a millstone

  192. were hung around His neck

  193. and He were cast into the sea

  194. than that He should cause

  195. one of these little ones

  196. to sin.

  197. We hear it a little more clearly

  198. now at the end

  199. of what Jesus is saying.

  200. That's a pretty clear warning,

  201. isn't it?

  202. We understand what that means,

  203. but what's got Jesus so worked up?

  204. What's He warning against?

  205. Jesus is strongly condemning,

  206. leading someone else

  207. towards sin

  208. and away from Him.

  209. Like,

  210. how, Will?

  211. How would someone do that

  212. that Jesus would be condemning?

  213. Well,

  214. I think it's hard for us

  215. to understand

  216. because when I read the phrase

  217. temptations to sin,

  218. I picture in my mind

  219. like a drug dealer

  220. or something

  221. who's kind of tempting

  222. little kids over here

  223. to get involved

  224. with bad stuff,

  225. to make a bad decision

  226. and a bad choice.

  227. And that's not wrong,

  228. but it's not really

  229. the picture here.

  230. The word that's translated

  231. temptations to sin

  232. has in mind

  233. more than a single bad choice

  234. or action,

  235. but rather a heart

  236. being bent towards sin

  237. away from Jesus,

  238. a direction

  239. that is away from Jesus,

  240. a stumbling block

  241. that leads someone

  242. towards sin

  243. which is always away

  244. from Jesus.

  245. The little ones

  246. could be kids,

  247. but really it's anyone

  248. who's young in faith,

  249. who's little in the community,

  250. an outsider

  251. to spiritual things.

  252. don't dare lead them

  253. or keep them

  254. away from Jesus.

  255. That's what he's saying.

  256. So the warning

  257. is for those

  258. in the Christian community,

  259. perhaps especially

  260. for leaders,

  261. teachers,

  262. don't teach someone

  263. by your words

  264. that self-righteousness

  265. and good behavior

  266. is the way to Jesus.

  267. That actually leads

  268. away from him

  269. as Jesus so often

  270. told the Pharisees.

  271. don't lead someone

  272. away from Jesus

  273. on the other hand

  274. by your flagrant

  275. and unrepentant sin

  276. that says there's another story

  277. that's truer

  278. than what I preach.

  279. Don't through hypocrisy

  280. or pride

  281. or favoritism

  282. keep someone

  283. away from Jesus

  284. whom you've been charged

  285. to lead to Jesus.

  286. It will not go well

  287. with you,

  288. Jesus says,

  289. if you find yourself

  290. doing those things.

  291. Taking sin seriously

  292. certainly means

  293. not trifling

  294. with what God's word

  295. tells us is dangerous.

  296. But it doesn't mean

  297. merely avoiding sin

  298. which you're never

  299. going to do perfectly.

  300. Does your defensiveness

  301. or your lack of repentance

  302. say to your kids

  303. that the only safe place

  304. is in successful,

  305. obedient living?

  306. On the other end

  307. of the spectrum,

  308. does your sacrificial

  309. following of Jesus

  310. communicate to those

  311. around you

  312. that He really is worth

  313. giving up everything for?

  314. Or do those who are

  315. newer, younger,

  316. potential Christians

  317. in your life,

  318. do they watch you

  319. and get the impression

  320. that as much as you say

  321. Jesus is worth everything,

  322. really,

  323. the true path to pleasure

  324. is indulging self

  325. and what you need.

  326. That's where life

  327. is really found.

  328. You just have to say

  329. this other thing

  330. about Jesus.

  331. I can tell by watching you

  332. He's not worth it.

  333. See, the opposite

  334. of temptations to sin,

  335. stumbling blocks

  336. to lead them away

  337. from Jesus

  338. is helping them

  339. to stand firm

  340. in the Lord,

  341. to trust His strength,

  342. to find their hope

  343. only in Him.

  344. So if it's woe

  345. to those who lead

  346. away from Jesus,

  347. then blessed are those

  348. who anchor others

  349. in Jesus,

  350. be they kids

  351. in your home

  352. or friends

  353. that you have.

  354. That's what taking sin

  355. seriously does

  356. for little ones

  357. in our community.

  358. It anchors them

  359. to Jesus.

  360. Then,

  361. verse 3,

  362. pay attention

  363. to yourselves.

  364. In other words,

  365. watch out for each other.

  366. Look out for each other.

  367. Not just yourself.

  368. If your brother sins,

  369. rebuke him.

  370. How seriously

  371. must we take sin?

  372. So seriously

  373. that whenever we see

  374. a brother or sister

  375. in sin,

  376. we must rebuke them.

  377. Jesus clearly

  378. commands us

  379. to confront sin

  380. in each other.

  381. I'll be honest.

  382. There is very little

  383. in all of God's Word

  384. that my heart

  385. runs away from

  386. faster than those

  387. couple of words

  388. right there.

  389. I don't enjoy this.

  390. There's all sorts

  391. of things in me

  392. that come up

  393. with reasons

  394. to avoid it.

  395. There's my desire

  396. to be loved.

  397. My aversion

  398. to conflict.

  399. My idol

  400. of peace

  401. and comfort

  402. that would like

  403. just a nice,

  404. easy conversation,

  405. nothing really hard.

  406. lots of reasons

  407. not to confront

  408. people.

  409. In fact,

  410. it's easier for me

  411. to stand up here

  412. and hide behind

  413. this pulpit

  414. and rebuke

  415. your sins

  416. than it is to sit

  417. across the lunch table

  418. one-on-one

  419. and have that conversation.

  420. And some of us

  421. hide behind

  422. social media,

  423. hide behind

  424. busy schedules,

  425. or any number

  426. of other things

  427. when Jesus says

  428. quite simply,

  429. we must address

  430. sin personally

  431. and consistently.

  432. And we're failing

  433. to love

  434. a brother or sister

  435. just as grievously

  436. as if we didn't

  437. tell our toddler

  438. to take his finger

  439. out of the electrical

  440. outlet when we saw him.

  441. And we knew

  442. there was danger there

  443. and we didn't say anything.

  444. That's how,

  445. you know how unloving

  446. that would be

  447. for a parent?

  448. It would be equally

  449. or more

  450. unloving for us.

  451. Do we really believe

  452. sin is what drags

  453. us away from Jesus?

  454. Is it really

  455. that serious,

  456. that dangerous

  457. to us?

  458. Of course,

  459. there are other places

  460. where we're told

  461. to do this gently,

  462. graciously,

  463. and humbly

  464. because we sin too,

  465. so don't get too excited

  466. about running off

  467. to tell people off.

  468. But here,

  469. we're simply told

  470. to do it.

  471. The reason we can,

  472. what actually enables us

  473. to rebuke sin

  474. in a brother or sister

  475. is the rest

  476. of the sentence.

  477. We can do this

  478. because if he repents,

  479. forgive him.

  480. As seriously

  481. as we take sin,

  482. we must also

  483. take forgiveness

  484. seriously,

  485. perhaps even more so.

  486. See,

  487. if you think about it

  488. for a second,

  489. if I take forgiveness

  490. seriously,

  491. then work backwards

  492. a little bit.

  493. then I'm actually able,

  494. it's a bit easier,

  495. to rebuke sin

  496. graciously

  497. because I've got a salve

  498. for the wound

  499. I may be creating.

  500. If sin is a problem

  501. in the community,

  502. forgiveness

  503. is the solution

  504. to it.

  505. Imagine,

  506. if you will,

  507. a friend

  508. in your small group

  509. who's been complaining

  510. to you about her husband

  511. and she's been talking

  512. glowingly

  513. about this guy

  514. at work

  515. who's so wonderful

  516. and it feels easier

  517. for you to avoid

  518. having the conversation

  519. that Jesus tells you

  520. you must have.

  521. But if you remember

  522. first your own sin,

  523. if you are eager

  524. to forgive,

  525. then it actually

  526. makes the conversation

  527. a more hopeful one

  528. to enter into.

  529. You're not coming

  530. to scold

  531. or condemn,

  532. right?

  533. Rather,

  534. you're coming

  535. to bring hope

  536. and restoration.

  537. Sin may be

  538. different for you.

  539. It may be pride

  540. or anger,

  541. racism,

  542. selfishness,

  543. alcohol abuse,

  544. whatever that sin is

  545. that you need

  546. to confront.

  547. But regardless,

  548. forgiveness

  549. must be

  550. the immediate

  551. response

  552. to repentance.

  553. If he repents,

  554. forgive him.

  555. For some of us,

  556. that's harder

  557. than confrontation.

  558. It doesn't seem

  559. just

  560. or fair,

  561. right?

  562. It doesn't seem

  563. to account

  564. for all the pain

  565. I've endured.

  566. And sometimes

  567. it just doesn't work

  568. to change things.

  569. That doesn't get us

  570. anywhere.

  571. Where?

  572. Jesus says,

  573. forgive him.

  574. Is there someone

  575. you need to

  576. forgive

  577. this morning?

  578. Better take the chance

  579. right now.

  580. Write the name down.

  581. It's only getting harder.

  582. Verse 4.

  583. And if he sins

  584. against you

  585. seven times

  586. in the day

  587. and turns to you

  588. seven times

  589. saying,

  590. I repent,

  591. you must

  592. forgive him.

  593. Forgive

  594. not just

  595. immediately

  596. but repeatedly.

  597. Forgiveness

  598. must be

  599. the persistent

  600. response

  601. to repentance.

  602. Now listen,

  603. I know where

  604. some of you

  605. are going

  606. right now.

  607. I know

  608. there's two sides

  609. to this.

  610. There are two

  611. people involved

  612. and you've got

  613. a theology

  614. of repentance

  615. that you want

  616. to pull out

  617. right now

  618. and say,

  619. this is what

  620. gospel repentance

  621. looks like

  622. and it has fruit

  623. and can I just

  624. encourage you

  625. with something?

  626. That's true.

  627. It's not what

  628. Jesus is talking

  629. about right here.

  630. Right now

  631. you are the

  632. forgiver.

  633. You're not worried

  634. about the

  635. repenter.

  636. You're the

  637. forgiver

  638. that Jesus

  639. is talking

  640. to.

  641. And he's

  642. saying to you

  643. seven times

  644. in one day

  645. someone repents.

  646. You forgive.

  647. For reference,

  648. three times

  649. was considered

  650. magnanimous

  651. by the religious

  652. leaders of

  653. Jesus'

  654. day.

  655. They thought

  656. that was

  657. very gracious

  658. and forgiving.

  659. Jesus says

  660. seven

  661. implying

  662. full,

  663. free,

  664. persistent

  665. forgiveness

  666. even against

  667. repeat offenders.

  668. Oh,

  669. they frustrate

  670. us,

  671. don't they?

  672. The same

  673. thing you

  674. just did.

  675. Let me ask

  676. you to think

  677. about something.

  678. How many

  679. times a day

  680. do you think

  681. God forgives

  682. you?

  683. I want an

  684. actual number

  685. to go in your

  686. head.

  687. It's okay

  688. if it's not

  689. exactly right

  690. but just

  691. kind of

  692. an estimate.

  693. You know,

  694. back to

  695. math class.

  696. How many

  697. times a day

  698. do you think

  699. God forgives

  700. you?

  701. Did you

  702. remember to

  703. include the

  704. thoughts and

  705. attitudes of

  706. your heart,

  707. not just the

  708. actions and

  709. bad decisions

  710. that you

  711. include?

  712. Don't leave

  713. those out.

  714. Did you

  715. remember to

  716. count the

  717. sins of

  718. omission,

  719. the duties

  720. that you

  721. neglected to

  722. do?

  723. You could

  724. have done,

  725. should have

  726. done,

  727. but just

  728. didn't?

  729. Number

  730. getting a

  731. little bit

  732. bigger.

  733. I don't

  734. know how many

  735. zeros yours

  736. has,

  737. but just pick a

  738. round number.

  739. And as we

  740. start to

  741. contemplate that

  742. for just a

  743. minute,

  744. it's where the

  745. beauty of

  746. Jesus'

  747. community actually

  748. comes into

  749. this.

  750. Because,

  751. listen,

  752. I totally

  753. relate to the

  754. difficulty that

  755. we feel in

  756. following some

  757. of these things

  758. Jesus said.

  759. I mean,

  760. just imagine

  761. those situations.

  762. He disrespected

  763. you again.

  764. She hurt your

  765. kids' feelings

  766. again.

  767. they let you

  768. down,

  769. left you

  770. out again.

  771. And nothing

  772. about you

  773. wants to

  774. forgive,

  775. does it?

  776. You don't

  777. feel that

  778. way.

  779. You don't

  780. have any

  781. forgiveness to

  782. give,

  783. do you?

  784. Have you

  785. been there?

  786. Are you

  787. there today,

  788. maybe?

  789. I don't have

  790. any forgiveness

  791. to give there.

  792. It doesn't

  793. make sense.

  794. See,

  795. forgiveness is

  796. costly,

  797. isn't it?

  798. There is a

  799. debt that

  800. must be

  801. paid.

  802. And forgiveness

  803. is painful.

  804. There is a

  805. wound that

  806. needs to be

  807. mended.

  808. And so it

  809. hurts and it

  810. costs to think

  811. about this.

  812. And if you have

  813. been hurt enough,

  814. and some of you

  815. have been,

  816. if they owe you

  817. enough,

  818. and some people

  819. owe you,

  820. moralism will

  821. never compel

  822. you to forgive.

  823. A preacher

  824. yelling loudly

  825. at you will not

  826. compel you to

  827. forgive if you

  828. hurt enough.

  829. You need

  830. Jesus.

  831. He's absolutely

  832. essential.

  833. There's no

  834. other way it

  835. works.

  836. You actually

  837. have to stare

  838. at your own

  839. debt before

  840. the face of

  841. God to have

  842. that number

  843. start piling

  844. up, to

  845. consider who

  846. is it that

  847. we've sinned

  848. against.

  849. You have to

  850. cry out to

  851. Him to

  852. feel again

  853. the tidal

  854. wave of

  855. His grace

  856. rushing over

  857. you in

  858. Jesus Christ.

  859. To feel

  860. His forgiveness

  861. that has to

  862. wash you

  863. clean every

  864. day.

  865. And then,

  866. then you

  867. have the

  868. resources to

  869. forgive someone

  870. else.

  871. Then you have

  872. rivers of

  873. grace flowing

  874. out from you

  875. because the

  876. ocean, the

  877. tidal wave of

  878. God's grace

  879. has poured

  880. over you.

  881. God's grace

  882. will

  883. have you

  884. ever wondered

  885. why God

  886. left His

  887. people as

  888. sinners in

  889. the world?

  890. God, why is

  891. sin just still

  892. a part of

  893. life when

  894. You've forgiven

  895. us for all

  896. those sins and

  897. You know God

  898. better than we

  899. do how sin

  900. divides and

  901. devastates and

  902. destroys?

  903. Why did You

  904. leave us still

  905. sinners?

  906. You ever thought

  907. about that

  908. before?

  909. I think it

  910. must be at

  911. least partially

  912. that it is even

  913. more important to

  914. God than

  915. eliminating sin

  916. is and that's

  917. really important.

  918. That we delight

  919. in Jesus.

  920. That we remain

  921. aware of our

  922. desperate need

  923. of Him.

  924. That we learn

  925. to live in

  926. relationship with

  927. Him where He

  928. is glorious to

  929. us.

  930. That's important

  931. to God.

  932. Really important.

  933. Important enough

  934. to leave us

  935. battling against

  936. sin.

  937. Did you know,

  938. by the way,

  939. that's why we

  940. talk about sin

  941. so much?

  942. Some of you

  943. probably think,

  944. what a crazy

  945. church,

  946. they talk about

  947. sin all the

  948. time.

  949. In fact,

  950. you could get

  951. the impression

  952. in a service

  953. like this one

  954. that we're

  955. almost proud

  956. of our sin.

  957. May it

  958. never be.

  959. May that

  960. never be

  961. true,

  962. that we

  963. would be

  964. proud of

  965. our sin.

  966. We talk

  967. about sin

  968. a lot

  969. because it

  970. is so

  971. important

  972. that we

  973. remember

  974. how much

  975. we need

  976. our Savior.

  977. Because we

  978. must never

  979. forget

  980. how great

  981. a Savior

  982. Jesus is

  983. and how

  984. much we

  985. need Him.

  986. That's the

  987. reason we

  988. try to be

  989. honest about

  990. our sin.

  991. Part of it

  992. is just

  993. honesty,

  994. but part

  995. of it

  996. is how

  997. important

  998. it is

  999. for our

  1000. hearts

  1001. to cling

  1002. to Jesus

  1003. and the

  1004. temptation

  1005. to forget

  1006. that we

  1007. need Him

  1008. if we

  1009. minimize

  1010. our sin.

  1011. If it's

  1012. important to

  1013. take sin

  1014. seriously

  1015. and more

  1016. important to

  1017. take forgiveness

  1018. seriously,

  1019. it's most

  1020. important to

  1021. take Jesus

  1022. seriously.

  1023. When we

  1024. see our

  1025. sin,

  1026. we see the

  1027. requirement of

  1028. forgiveness,

  1029. we need a

  1030. great Savior.

  1031. Not just a

  1032. decent teacher,

  1033. not just a

  1034. guy who's a

  1035. good life

  1036. coach,

  1037. we need a

  1038. great Savior

  1039. who alone

  1040. can rescue

  1041. us and

  1042. provide the

  1043. resources for

  1044. us to be the

  1045. community that

  1046. He commands

  1047. us to be.

  1048. we don't

  1049. just need

  1050. the path,

  1051. we need

  1052. the power

  1053. to live

  1054. like this

  1055. and only

  1056. Jesus gives

  1057. it.

  1058. He's the

  1059. only one.

  1060. Jesus,

  1061. the object

  1062. of our

  1063. faith,

  1064. gives

  1065. supernatural

  1066. power for

  1067. things naturally

  1068. beyond us.

  1069. It's the

  1070. point of the

  1071. next couple

  1072. of verses.

  1073. Verse 5,

  1074. the apostles

  1075. say to

  1076. Jesus,

  1077. increase our

  1078. faith.

  1079. The Lord

  1080. said,

  1081. if you had

  1082. faith like a

  1083. grain of

  1084. mustard seed,

  1085. you could

  1086. say to

  1087. this mulberry

  1088. tree,

  1089. be uprooted

  1090. and planted

  1091. in the sea

  1092. and it

  1093. would obey

  1094. you.

  1095. Do you

  1096. relate with

  1097. the disciples?

  1098. They take

  1099. to heart

  1100. what Jesus

  1101. is saying

  1102. about forgiveness,

  1103. don't they?

  1104. Jesus,

  1105. increase our

  1106. faith.

  1107. How could

  1108. we ever

  1109. do that?

  1110. Help!

  1111. We can't

  1112. do it.

  1113. We need

  1114. more faith.

  1115. And Jesus

  1116. says,

  1117. well,

  1118. not exactly.

  1119. it's the

  1120. object of

  1121. the faith

  1122. that's the

  1123. source of

  1124. power.

  1125. So that

  1126. even the

  1127. smallest

  1128. amount of

  1129. faith can

  1130. uproot even

  1131. the strongest

  1132. tree in

  1133. their world

  1134. and heave it

  1135. into the

  1136. ocean.

  1137. We all know

  1138. days where our

  1139. faith feels

  1140. small,

  1141. don't we?

  1142. Jesus says

  1143. on those

  1144. days,

  1145. you get the

  1146. same strong

  1147. Savior,

  1148. the same

  1149. tidal wave

  1150. of forgiveness,

  1151. the same

  1152. supernatural

  1153. Holy Spirit

  1154. empowerment

  1155. for life

  1156. and living

  1157. in a sin

  1158. stained world

  1159. that you

  1160. would get

  1161. on the

  1162. days you

  1163. think you're

  1164. strong.

  1165. It's not

  1166. that people

  1167. need to be

  1168. more like

  1169. us,

  1170. great in

  1171. faith.

  1172. It's that

  1173. they,

  1174. like us,

  1175. need a

  1176. great Savior.

  1177. If someone

  1178. comes to you,

  1179. someone may

  1180. have said to

  1181. you before,

  1182. I just

  1183. need your

  1184. faith.

  1185. say,

  1186. no,

  1187. you need

  1188. my Jesus.

  1189. He sustains

  1190. me.

  1191. He holds

  1192. on to me.

  1193. He empowers

  1194. me in my

  1195. weakest

  1196. hour.

  1197. Then Jesus

  1198. concludes with

  1199. a parable

  1200. to remind us

  1201. that He has

  1202. done so much

  1203. for us

  1204. that no matter

  1205. how much we

  1206. serve Him,

  1207. He will

  1208. never be

  1209. in our

  1210. debt.

  1211. Verse 7,

  1212. will any

  1213. one of you

  1214. who has a

  1215. servant plowing

  1216. or keeping

  1217. sheep say

  1218. to him

  1219. when he's

  1220. come in

  1221. from the

  1222. field,

  1223. come at

  1224. once and

  1225. recline

  1226. at table?

  1227. No.

  1228. Will he

  1229. not rather

  1230. say to

  1231. him,

  1232. prepare supper

  1233. for me

  1234. and dress

  1235. properly

  1236. and serve

  1237. me while

  1238. I eat

  1239. and drink

  1240. and afterward

  1241. you will

  1242. eat and

  1243. drink?

  1244. Yes,

  1245. that is what

  1246. they would

  1247. say.

  1248. Does he

  1249. thank the

  1250. servant

  1251. because he

  1252. did what

  1253. was commanded?

  1254. No.

  1255. So you

  1256. also,

  1257. when you

  1258. have done

  1259. all that

  1260. you were

  1261. commanded,

  1262. say,

  1263. we are

  1264. unworthy

  1265. servants,

  1266. we have

  1267. only done

  1268. what was

  1269. our duty.

  1270. The point

  1271. here in

  1272. saying

  1273. unworthy

  1274. servants

  1275. here at

  1276. the end,

  1277. it's not

  1278. that we're

  1279. insignificant,

  1280. worthless,

  1281. that's not

  1282. what the

  1283. word means,

  1284. it's not

  1285. that we

  1286. should treat

  1287. others as

  1288. though they

  1289. are worthless,

  1290. rather it

  1291. means that

  1292. we never

  1293. merit a

  1294. change in

  1295. places with

  1296. God.

  1297. We don't

  1298. become

  1299. creditor

  1300. master

  1301. and him

  1302. debtor.

  1303. We don't

  1304. become

  1305. master

  1306. and him

  1307. servant.

  1308. The servant

  1309. works hard

  1310. all day

  1311. but still

  1312. fixes

  1313. dinner

  1314. rather than

  1315. earning the

  1316. right to

  1317. be fed

  1318. by the

  1319. master.

  1320. That's how

  1321. great the

  1322. gift of

  1323. Jesus is

  1324. to us,

  1325. that we

  1326. remain

  1327. dependent

  1328. on him,

  1329. that we

  1330. never stop

  1331. needing

  1332. him,

  1333. we never

  1334. become the

  1335. source of

  1336. his

  1337. forgiveness.

  1338. It's the

  1339. other way

  1340. around,

  1341. right?

  1342. This is

  1343. the spirit

  1344. of humility

  1345. many see

  1346. as the

  1347. thread of

  1348. the whole

  1349. passage.

  1350. Seeing sin,

  1351. extending

  1352. gracious

  1353. forgiveness,

  1354. grasping

  1355. for more

  1356. of Jesus

  1357. by faith,

  1358. serving

  1359. his kingdom

  1360. rather than

  1361. my own.

  1362. Humility

  1363. is essential

  1364. in Jesus'

  1365. community

  1366. because while

  1367. we are

  1368. significant in

  1369. his story,

  1370. the story is

  1371. not ultimately

  1372. about us.

  1373. We're not

  1374. the heroes.

  1375. While we are

  1376. meaningful servants

  1377. in the kingdom,

  1378. we are not

  1379. the king.

  1380. Imagine you

  1381. come up to

  1382. me after the

  1383. service and

  1384. say,

  1385. what a great

  1386. sermon,

  1387. pastor.

  1388. I know,

  1389. I said,

  1390. imagine,

  1391. imagine that

  1392. you did.

  1393. And if I

  1394. responded by

  1395. saying,

  1396. well,

  1397. yes,

  1398. I am quite

  1399. fantastic.

  1400. In fact,

  1401. I hope you'll

  1402. tell many

  1403. others about

  1404. me and this

  1405. morning is

  1406. after all,

  1407. all about

  1408. me,

  1409. so thank

  1410. you for

  1411. noticing.

  1412. I hope you

  1413. would slap

  1414. me.

  1415. Jesus says

  1416. you have to

  1417. rebuke me,

  1418. so there.

  1419. hopefully,

  1420. what I would

  1421. not just say

  1422. but actually

  1423. feel is what

  1424. a joy it is

  1425. to do something

  1426. God has called

  1427. me to do.

  1428. What a privilege

  1429. it is to share

  1430. such good news

  1431. about Jesus

  1432. that I need

  1433. so desperately

  1434. myself.

  1435. And I hope

  1436. you'll tell

  1437. others about

  1438. Jesus too.

  1439. Similarly,

  1440. when you

  1441. gently rebuke

  1442. a brother

  1443. or sister,

  1444. when you

  1445. forgive the

  1446. seventh time

  1447. even though

  1448. it hurts,

  1449. when you

  1450. trust Jesus

  1451. in a hard

  1452. situation

  1453. where you

  1454. would more

  1455. likely grasp

  1456. for control,

  1457. you have

  1458. merely done

  1459. ordinary

  1460. Christianity.

  1461. But it

  1462. required

  1463. an extraordinary

  1464. Jesus.

  1465. You may say

  1466. what a joy to

  1467. reflect the

  1468. heart of

  1469. Jesus to

  1470. me by

  1471. forgiving

  1472. someone else.

  1473. And that

  1474. pointing someone

  1475. else to

  1476. Jesus,

  1477. that confronting

  1478. a fellow

  1479. sinner,

  1480. that forgiving

  1481. a repeat

  1482. offender

  1483. was

  1484. supernatural.

  1485. Basic

  1486. Christianity,

  1487. yes,

  1488. Jesus says,

  1489. but absolutely

  1490. supernatural,

  1491. only possible

  1492. through the

  1493. grace of

  1494. Jesus.

  1495. It's why

  1496. those of us

  1497. who have

  1498. taken vows

  1499. of membership

  1500. here promise

  1501. to live as

  1502. followers of

  1503. Jesus only

  1504. in humble

  1505. reliance upon

  1506. the grace

  1507. of the Holy

  1508. Spirit.

  1509. Are you

  1510. clinging

  1511. desperately to

  1512. Him today?

  1513. Is that the

  1514. posture in

  1515. which you

  1516. live?

  1517. Are you

  1518. drawing strength

  1519. from His

  1520. Spirit?

  1521. We've said

  1522. it's the only

  1523. way we can

  1524. live.

  1525. I don't have

  1526. those resources

  1527. to live like

  1528. that in

  1529. myself,

  1530. but I

  1531. have a

  1532. great Savior

  1533. and He

  1534. gives them

  1535. an abundance

  1536. far beyond

  1537. what I

  1538. deserve to

  1539. enable me

  1540. to live

  1541. for Him.

  1542. See,

  1543. this table

  1544. says exactly

  1545. that to us.

  1546. It says,

  1547. first of all,

  1548. that sin is

  1549. serious.

  1550. So serious

  1551. Jesus had to

  1552. die for it.

  1553. It says

  1554. forgiveness is

  1555. serious.

  1556. So serious

  1557. we should

  1558. celebrate it

  1559. often because

  1560. we need it.

  1561. And it

  1562. says Jesus

  1563. is most

  1564. serious.

  1565. We cling

  1566. to Him

  1567. as our

  1568. great Savior.

  1569. The only

  1570. way

  1571. that we

  1572. can live

  1573. with God.

  1574. The only

  1575. food we

  1576. need

  1577. to empower

  1578. us and

  1579. strengthen

  1580. us for

  1581. living as

  1582. He has

  1583. called us

  1584. to.

  1585. He owes

  1586. us nothing,

  1587. does He?

  1588. He's the

  1589. Master.

  1590. But you

  1591. may remember

  1592. in Luke

    Luke 12 chapter mention

  1593. chapter 12

  1594. a few

  1595. weeks ago,

  1596. when He

  1597. comes back

  1598. as the

  1599. Master

  1600. returning

  1601. to unworthy

  1602. servants

  1603. who have

  1604. done only

  1605. their duty

  1606. and often

  1607. done very

  1608. poorly at

  1609. that.

  1610. Remember

  1611. what He

  1612. does,

  1613. Luke 12?

  1614. He serves

  1615. us.

  1616. Verse 37,

  1617. blessed are

  1618. those servants

  1619. whom the

  1620. Master finds

  1621. awake when

  1622. He comes.

  1623. Truly I

  1624. say to

  1625. you,

  1626. He will

  1627. dress

  1628. Himself

  1629. for service

  1630. and have

  1631. them recline

  1632. at table

  1633. and He

  1634. will come

  1635. and serve

  1636. them.

  1637. He's

  1638. just

  1639. established

  1640. this morning

  1641. there's no

  1642. reason for

  1643. that to

  1644. happen.

  1645. There's

  1646. nothing that

  1647. we deserve

  1648. for Him

  1649. to come

  1650. to us

  1651. and yet

  1652. that's

  1653. how He

  1654. loves us.

  1655. That's

  1656. what He

  1657. does this

  1658. morning in

  1659. setting this

  1660. table before

  1661. us and

  1662. every day

  1663. throughout

  1664. eternity

  1665. He sets

  1666. it,

  1667. He invites

  1668. you to

  1669. dine with

  1670. Him and

  1671. He serves

  1672. you beyond

  1673. what you

  1674. could ever

  1675. repay.

  1676. Right after

  1677. He took

  1678. off His

  1679. outer garment

  1680. and washed

  1681. His disciples

  1682. feet,

  1683. serving

  1684. them,

  1685. He served

  1686. them the

  1687. Passover meal

  1688. 1 Corinthians

  1689. reminds us

  1690. that He took

  1691. bread

  1692. and He

  1693. broke it

  1694. and He

  1695. gave it to

  1696. them saying

  1697. this is

  1698. my body

  1699. broken for

  1700. you,

  1701. do this

  1702. in remembrance

  1703. of me.

  1704. In the same

  1705. way after

  1706. supper He

  1707. took the

  1708. cup and

  1709. said this

  1710. cup is

  1711. the new

  1712. covenant

  1713. in my

  1714. blood,

  1715. shed for

  1716. many for

  1717. the forgiveness

  1718. of sins,

  1719. drink from

  1720. it,

  1721. all of

  1722. you.

  1723. Young

  1724. people,

  1725. some of

  1726. you are

  1727. coming to

  1728. partake of

  1729. this table

  1730. for the

  1731. first time

  1732. this morning

  1733. and we're

  1734. so excited

  1735. to celebrate

  1736. Jesus in

  1737. this way

  1738. with you.

  1739. Hopefully it's

  1740. the first

  1741. time of

  1742. many,

  1743. many times

  1744. in your

  1745. life that

  1746. you will

  1747. come to

  1748. the Lord's

  1749. table,

  1750. that Jesus

  1751. will invite

  1752. you to

  1753. sit down

  1754. with Him

  1755. and here's

  1756. what I want

  1757. you to hear

  1758. when you

  1759. come.

  1760. I want

  1761. you every

  1762. time to

  1763. hear Jesus

  1764. whispering in

  1765. your ear,

  1766. I love

  1767. you so

  1768. much.

  1769. I died

  1770. for you

  1771. so you

  1772. could live

  1773. with me.

  1774. Every time

  1775. you come,

  1776. it's a chance

  1777. to remember

  1778. that sin

  1779. is serious

  1780. and confess

  1781. sin.

  1782. It's a chance

  1783. to remember

  1784. forgiveness

  1785. is serious

  1786. and think

  1787. is there

  1788. someone I

  1789. need to

  1790. forgive

  1791. and need

  1792. to be

  1793. made right

  1794. with before

  1795. I come

  1796. and most

  1797. importantly

  1798. kids,

  1799. when you

  1800. come it's a

  1801. chance to

  1802. remember at

  1803. this table

  1804. Jesus

  1805. and remember

  1806. how much

  1807. He loves

  1808. you,

  1809. that He

  1810. would hang

  1811. on a cross

  1812. so that you

  1813. wouldn't have

  1814. to,

  1815. so that He

  1816. would be there

  1817. in your

  1818. place so that

  1819. you could live

  1820. with Him

  1821. forever.

  1822. That's how

  1823. much He

  1824. loves you.

  1825. Let's pray

  1826. and then we'll

  1827. come and celebrate

  1828. this together.

  1829. Jesus,

  1830. we're so grateful

  1831. for what You

  1832. have done for us.

  1833. And You didn't

  1834. just do it once

  1835. upon a time,

  1836. but You come

  1837. to meet with us

  1838. and feed us

  1839. now,

  1840. so use these

  1841. elements,

  1842. not only to

  1843. remind us

  1844. of what You

  1845. have done,

  1846. but to strengthen

  1847. us afresh

  1848. for loving

  1849. and serving.

  1850. We ask it in

  1851. Your name.

  1852. Amen.

  1853. Amen.
