  1. You are listening to a message from Southwood Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama.

  2. Our passion is to experience and express grace.

  3. Join us.

  4. Turn with me this morning to Luke 17.

  5. It's our last Sunday in Luke for a while.

  6. Just letting you groan or something.

  7. Nobody's going to cry.

  8. We're going to jump just for a little while to the Old Testament this summer.

  9. See the gospel of grace in some of those great stories that we love.

  10. But this morning, this passage at the end of Luke 17 has a little bit of everything.

  11. And it can be a bit confusing as you get into it.

  12. Jesus redirects Pharisees.

  13. He quotes Proverbs.

  14. He discusses some Old Testament characters.

  15. He even looks forward and talks about end times.

  16. But he's responding here to a question about the kingdom of God.

  17. Now, we need to know what he says about the kingdom of God because that's our vision as a church is to advance the kingdom of God, right?

  18. So, Jesus, we really need to know what that means.

  19. What it's all about.

  20. I think it's helpful before we read this passage together to give you a little background that may help parts of it make a bit more sense to you as we read it.

  21. In the Bible, the kingdom of God is wherever Yahweh is worshipped, trusted, and obeyed.

  22. Where his reign is active.

  23. And people submit to him as king.

  24. So, we as a church, in seeking to advance the kingdom of God, are doing that in our hearts, in our lives.

  25. Here and everywhere.

  26. People more and more trusting and following the king.

  27. That's what we're about.

  28. That phrase, kingdom of God, is also used then to talk about eternity.

  29. When the rule and reign of Yahweh will be fully and finally established, right?

  30. Where he's perfectly obeyed and worshipped and trusted in the new heavens, the new earth.

  31. The prophets talk a lot about these days.

  32. And Daniel, in particular, explains that the Son of Man, this glorious divine figure,

  33. will reign with God the Ancient of Days in an everlasting kingdom.

  34. That's Daniel 7, the Son of Man.

  35. He's the king who comes for that everlasting kingdom.

  36. Daniel 7, great to read later.

  37. Really important to know for this morning.

  38. The Son of Man is the king.

  39. So, when those days come that the prophets talk about looking forward to,

  40. when the king returns to be enthroned forever,

  41. perhaps the most notable theme of everything in the Old Testament about it,

  42. is that that day is both a joyful one and a fearful one.

  43. It's a day of judgment as well as a day of salvation at the same time.

  44. When that eternal kingdom comes,

  45. those who have refused to submit to Yahweh,

  46. to bow the knee and trust and follow the king,

  47. will be punished.

  48. On the other hand,

  49. those who have suffered much,

  50. but who are aligned with the king,

  51. will find rescue and rest in his victory.

  52. A day of judgment and salvation.

  53. A day of separation.

  54. Destinies being settled.

  55. In fact, we see at times this eternal kingdom break into human history.

  56. And we get a taste of that reality,

  57. of that separation.

  58. Think, for example, of Noah and the ark.

  59. You may know that story.

  60. But judgment comes on the wicked, right?

  61. Many are destroyed.

  62. And yet, those inside the ark are rescued,

  63. miraculously,

  64. from the flood.

  65. God's people saved.

  66. His enemies destroyed.

  67. It doesn't happen catastrophically like that often.

  68. But you can think of, for instance,

  69. the entrance into the promised land.

  70. Idolatrous nations tasting the inbreaking of that eternal judgment, right?

  71. And God's people delivered.

  72. Or you could think of Sodom and Gomorrah,

  73. tasting God's righteous wrath on their sin,

  74. while Lot, who is also a sinner,

  75. is spared by God's grace.

  76. Sometimes the eternal kingdom shows up in moments like that in the present.

  77. Which, by the way, helps us some with understanding some of those really tough passages

  78. and what is God doing in these moments of judgment.

  79. But whether you side with the true king or not,

  80. leads to two extremely different outcomes.

  81. Devastating judgment

  82. or glorious salvation

  83. at the kingdom of God's coming.

  84. Let's read what Jesus says

  85. and then we'll pray together.

  86. You'll see we need His help

  87. always

  88. and especially

  89. today as we look at this passage.

  90. Luke 17 at verse 20.

  91. This is God's Word.

  92. Being asked by the Pharisees

  93. when the kingdom of God would come,

  94. He answered them,

  95. The kingdom of God is not coming with signs to be observed,

  96. nor will they say,

  97. Look, here it is,

  98. or there.

  99. For behold, the kingdom of God is in the midst of you.

  100. And He said to the disciples,

  101. The days are coming when you will desire to see

  102. one of the days of the Son of Man

  103. and you will not see it.

  104. And they will say to you,

  105. Look there!

  106. Or look here!

  107. Do not go out or follow them.

  108. For as the lightning flashes

  109. and lights up the sky

  110. from one side to the other,

  111. so will the Son of Man be in His day.

  112. But first He must suffer many things

  113. and be rejected by this generation.

  114. Just as it was in the days of Noah,

  115. so will it be in the days of the Son of Man.

  116. They were eating and drinking and marrying

  117. and being given in marriage

  118. until the day when Noah entered the ark

  119. and the flood came

  120. and destroyed them all.

  121. Likewise, just as it was in the days of Lot,

  122. they were eating and drinking,

  123. buying and selling,

  124. planting and building.

  125. But on the day when Lot went out from Sodom,

  126. fire and sulfur rained from heaven

  127. and destroyed them all.

  128. So will it be on the day

  129. when the Son of Man is revealed.

  130. On that day let the one who is on the housetop

  131. with his goods in the house

  132. not come down to take them away.

  133. And likewise let the one who is in the field

  134. not turn back.

  135. Remember Lot's wife.

  136. Whoever seeks to preserve his wife,

  137. his life, will lose it.

  138. But whoever loses his life will keep it.

  139. I tell you in that night

  140. there will be two in one bed.

  141. One will be taken and the other left.

  142. There will be two women grinding together.

  143. One will be taken and the other left.

  144. And they said to him,

  145. Where, Lord?

  146. He said to them,

  147. Where the corpse is.

  148. There the vultures will gather.

  149. Let's pray.

  150. Father, we do ask for your help.

  151. We want to understand.

  152. But more than that, Father,

  153. we want to know

  154. this message that you have for us.

  155. Jesus, we need to know more of you

  156. and we want to know

  157. what you speak of so clearly

  158. and directly

  159. and so, Holy Spirit,

  160. would you teach us

  161. that we might know things

  162. that are too lofty

  163. for us to understand on our own.

  164. We cry out for your help.

  165. Would you teach us

  166. and would you change us?

  167. In Jesus' name,

  168. Amen.

  169. Let's walk through this passage

  170. together this morning,

  171. the one we just read,

  172. to understand

  173. the significant things

  174. Jesus is saying

  175. and then we'll take a few minutes

  176. to talk about

  177. what it means

  178. for us.

  179. Jesus begins here

  180. by saying to the Pharisees,

  181. the kingdom

  182. may look different

  183. from what you expect.

  184. The Pharisees ask

  185. when the kingdom is coming

  186. and Jesus says

  187. the kingdom of God

  188. is not coming

  189. with signs

  190. to be observed,

  191. nor will they say,

  192. look, here it is

  193. or there,

  194. for behold,

  195. the kingdom of God

  196. is in the midst of you.

  197. See, the Pharisees

  198. were one group

  199. among many at the time

  200. who taught and believed

  201. that the kingdom of God,

  202. when it showed up,

  203. there were going to be

  204. some really easy things

  205. to notice

  206. among which,

  207. probably most prominent,

  208. was the Romans

  209. were going to be defeated

  210. and driven out

  211. and so the power

  212. and prestige

  213. of the Jews

  214. was going to flourish

  215. in some really

  216. tangible, exciting ways.

  217. They were looking forward

  218. to that,

  219. looking for signs

  220. that that was happening

  221. and perhaps not seeing them

  222. the way they'd hoped.

  223. And when they say when,

  224. Jesus says,

  225. let me clear something up

  226. for you.

  227. You're looking

  228. for the wrong thing.

  229. God's kingdom

  230. is not tied to

  231. or dependent upon

  232. any political power

  233. or party.

  234. God's kingdom

  235. is not tied to

  236. or dependent upon

  237. any political power

  238. or party,

  239. then or now.

  240. It doesn't look like

  241. God's people

  242. increasing earthly success

  243. or social influence

  244. that they have per se.

  245. It's more about

  246. God's people

  247. individually

  248. and corporately

  249. submitting to the king,

  250. embodying the values

  251. and the priorities

  252. of the king.

  253. And friends,

  254. I think if we

  255. want to see society impacted,

  256. if we're confused

  257. about political power,

  258. we've got a lot

  259. to work on

  260. just right there,

  261. don't we?

  262. A lot that will have

  263. a big influence

  264. in our society

  265. when we work on

  266. embodying the king's

  267. values and priorities,

  268. submitting to him

  269. ourselves.

  270. Beyond that kind of

  271. redirection

  272. of the Pharisees,

  273. Jesus seems to be saying

  274. in some ways

  275. the kingdom is already here.

  276. The kingdom of God

  277. is in the midst of you.

  278. I mean,

  279. after all,

  280. the king is here,

  281. right?

  282. Jesus came preaching

  283. the kingdom of heaven

  284. is at hand.

  285. That's been the message.

  286. But in looking for

  287. the kind of signs

  288. that they wanted to see,

  289. the Pharisees were missing

  290. the glorious signs

  291. that the king was bringing.

  292. Outsiders welcomed in.

  293. Sick, healed.

  294. Poor having good news

  295. preached to them.

  296. This is what the kingdom

  297. is going to be, right?

  298. Don't miss it,

  299. Jesus says.

  300. But then I love

  301. how Jesus comforts

  302. and helps his followers

  303. in this next section.

  304. He turns to them

  305. and what he says to them

  306. is so much what

  307. we need to hear

  308. because we live

  309. in between

  310. Jesus' two comings,

  311. don't we?

  312. That's where

  313. we find ourselves

  314. in the course of history.

  315. He's come once

  316. but he's coming again.

  317. And so we live

  318. where his kingdom

  319. is already here

  320. and not yet here fully.

  321. We feel this every day,

  322. don't we?

  323. Sin is defeated

  324. but it's still fighting against us.

  325. Satan is conquered

  326. but he's still prowling around

  327. and seeking to devour.

  328. The curse has been reversed

  329. but we still look around

  330. and see evidence of it everywhere.

  331. creation is still longing

  332. to be restored

  333. to what God created it

  334. to be.

  335. And so as we live there,

  336. Jesus says,

  337. don't fear.

  338. Listen,

  339. when the kingdom comes

  340. fully and finally,

  341. it may look different

  342. from what you expect.

  343. But you won't miss the king

  344. when he returns to reign.

  345. The days are coming,

  346. he says to his disciples,

  347. when you will desire

  348. to see one of the days

  349. of the Son of Man

  350. and you will not see it.

  351. When you will long

  352. to see the king come

  353. and to be in those days

  354. where everything's made

  355. the way it's supposed to be.

  356. In your suffering and pain

  357. as Jeremy led us

  358. in acknowledging this morning,

  359. as you cry out,

  360. you'll long for the day

  361. when that full

  362. and final rescue comes

  363. and you won't see it.

  364. You'll still ache.

  365. Jesus says we're going to be

  366. living in the in-between

  367. and he knows

  368. it's going to be hard for us.

  369. And when it is,

  370. when we're struggling,

  371. when it's hard,

  372. people will say,

  373. look there

  374. or look here.

  375. Do not go out

  376. or follow them

  377. for as the lightning flashes

  378. and lights up the sky

  379. from one side to the other,

  380. so will the Son of Man

  381. be in his day.

  382. You won't miss the king.

  383. No one will

  384. when he returns to reign.

  385. So don't let your focus

  386. be distracted from Jesus.

  387. People will offer you

  388. easier ways.

  389. People will offer you

  390. paths of life

  391. that avoid suffering.

  392. People will tell you

  393. there's hope

  394. somewhere else.

  395. You're crazy to wait

  396. for Jesus.

  397. Don't you believe it,

  398. Jesus says.

  399. You remember

  400. that though the kingdom

  401. is here only in seed form,

  402. it's not yet

  403. what it will be.

  404. And so in the distress

  405. and difficulty

  406. of living in the not yet,

  407. cling to Jesus

  408. peace and hope

  409. in him.

  410. I was pulling weeds

  411. last week

  412. under the shade

  413. of a beautiful

  414. Japanese maple tree

  415. in our front yard.

  416. It turns these

  417. beautiful orange colors

  418. and it's grown

  419. just in the few years

  420. that we've been in the house

  421. all over the place.

  422. It's got some branches

  423. that hang out

  424. over the front yard

  425. and some spread up

  426. onto the roof

  427. of the house

  428. and every year

  429. it seems like branches

  430. sprout up in a new

  431. in different direction.

  432. And so keeping cool

  433. under that shade,

  434. I'm pulling up weeds

  435. in the flower bed

  436. and I really easily

  437. plucked up this little sprig

  438. and I looked down

  439. to see what it was.

  440. You know what I was holding

  441. in my hand?

  442. A Japanese maple.

  443. Right there in my hand.

  444. I looked at it.

  445. It had a stump,

  446. you know,

  447. as it were.

  448. It had some leaves

  449. that sure enough

  450. were Japanese maple leaves.

  451. Little sprigs

  452. of branches on it.

  453. everything

  454. that you needed

  455. to be a real

  456. Japanese maple tree

  457. right there

  458. in the palm of my hand.

  459. It was already

  460. a Japanese maple

  461. but one day,

  462. not yet,

  463. it will look

  464. very, very different.

  465. What fit in my hand

  466. will be taller

  467. than our house

  468. if it survives

  469. extreme weather

  470. and severe storms

  471. and careless gardeners

  472. who pull them up?

  473. And that's a bit like

  474. living in the already

  475. and not yet

  476. of the kingdom.

  477. All the essential properties

  478. of the kingdom

  479. are here

  480. but there are days

  481. of smallness,

  482. of dryness,

  483. windy days

  484. where you're sure

  485. that the kingdom

  486. is never going to come

  487. in its fullness

  488. and if it ever does

  489. you sure won't be able

  490. to hang in there

  491. until it comes.

  492. But it's much more certain

  493. that the kingdom

  494. is coming

  495. in its fullness

  496. than the growth

  497. of my little Japanese

  498. maple tree

  499. in my hand.

  500. Jesus says,

  501. I know it's hard,

  502. I know it looks

  503. bleak some days,

  504. I am coming back,

  505. the kingdom

  506. will come,

  507. I've got you.

  508. So,

  509. don't let suffering

  510. cause you

  511. to lose hope.

  512. After all,

  513. you're not the only one

  514. who suffers,

  515. the king must suffer too,

  516. right?

  517. Verse 25,

  518. first,

  519. he must suffer

  520. many things

  521. and be rejected

  522. by this generation.

  523. It's the way

  524. the kingdom works,

  525. isn't it?

  526. Not the way

  527. the Pharisees

  528. or the disciples

  529. perhaps would have

  530. planned it,

  531. but the seed

  532. must fall to the ground

  533. and die

  534. before it grows.

  535. There's a cross

  536. coming before

  537. the crown

  538. even and especially

  539. for the king.

  540. Here we are again.

  541. Jesus,

  542. remember where we are

  543. in Luke,

  544. marching

  545. toward Jerusalem,

  546. intent

  547. on going

  548. to the cross

  549. to die

  550. and wanting

  551. us to understand

  552. how utterly

  553. essential it is

  554. that he do that.

  555. He must

  556. suffer.

  557. We can expect

  558. similar struggles

  559. to come for us

  560. while we wait

  561. for our king

  562. to come again.

  563. So,

  564. keep hoping

  565. in him

  566. and in his promised

  567. return.

  568. He's coming.

  569. Then Jesus

  570. turns to some

  571. of those Old Testament

  572. examples

  573. that we've already

  574. mentioned

  575. to say in a few

  576. different ways,

  577. but come what may,

  578. no matter how bad

  579. it gets,

  580. don't get so

  581. preoccupied

  582. with your life

  583. that you are

  584. unprepared

  585. for the return

  586. of the king.

  587. See,

  588. nothing

  589. could be more

  590. important

  591. than being prepared,

  592. than being ready,

  593. for the kingdom.

  594. And there are

  595. many things

  596. every day

  597. calling our attention

  598. away from that.

  599. He gives these

  600. examples so we

  601. understand.

  602. Verse 26,

  603. just as it was

  604. in the days of Noah,

  605. so will it be

  606. in the days

  607. of the Son of Man.

  608. They were eating

  609. and drinking

  610. and marrying

  611. and being given

  612. in marriage

  613. until the day

  614. when Noah

  615. entered the ark

  616. and the flood

  617. came and destroyed

  618. them all.

  619. They were doing

  620. normal things,

  621. right?

  622. Good things.

  623. but not

  624. trusting

  625. the king,

  626. not prepared

  627. for when the

  628. kingdom

  629. broke into

  630. their world.

  631. Most of them

  632. received judgment

  633. rather than

  634. salvation.

  635. Same with

  636. Sodom and

  637. Gomorrah.

  638. Verse 28,

  639. likewise,

  640. just as it was

  641. in the days of Lot,

  642. they were eating

  643. and drinking,

  644. buying and selling,

  645. planting and building,

  646. but on the day

  647. when Lot

  648. went out from

  649. Sodom,

  650. fire and sulfur

  651. rained from heaven

  652. and destroyed

  653. them all.

  654. So will it be

  655. on the day

  656. when the Son of Man

  657. is revealed.

  658. Again,

  659. good,

  660. normal stuff

  661. to be doing,

  662. except

  663. they hadn't

  664. prepared themselves

  665. for the king

  666. and the kingdom

  667. comes suddenly.

  668. Unmistakably,

  669. you see it,

  670. inescapably,

  671. you can't avoid it,

  672. but normal life

  673. is interrupted

  674. by sudden

  675. destruction.

  676. And it's disaster

  677. for those who

  678. don't know the king,

  679. isn't it?

  680. So be ready,

  681. Jesus says.

  682. How?

  683. By trusting Jesus

  684. and treasuring

  685. him above

  686. all else.

  687. Verse 31,

  688. on that day,

  689. let the one

  690. who's on the housetop

  691. with his goods

  692. in the house

  693. not come down

  694. to take them away

  695. and likewise

  696. let the one

  697. who's in the field

  698. not turn back.

  699. Remember Lot's wife.

  700. Whoever seeks

  701. to preserve his life

  702. will lose it,

  703. but whoever loses

  704. his life

  705. will keep it.

  706. Don't look back

  707. for anything

  708. that's been left there

  709. and think,

  710. oh,

  711. I need that.

  712. That's what's most important.

  713. That's what I'm

  714. hanging on to.

  715. It's something

  716. in my house.

  717. It's the crops

  718. I have.

  719. That's what keeps me safe.

  720. I need to make sure

  721. I take them with me.

  722. What did Lot's wife do?

  723. She looked back

  724. against God's command

  725. as they were

  726. leaving Sodom

  727. and instead of being

  728. rescued,

  729. she becomes

  730. a pillar

  731. of salt.

  732. Anything that

  733. makes up this life,

  734. even life itself,

  735. pales in comparison

  736. to eternal life

  737. with Jesus.

  738. If I asked you today,

  739. what's your heart

  740. set on?

  741. What are you longing

  742. for?

  743. What do you most want?

  744. Would Jesus

  745. and his kingdom

  746. come to mind?

  747. Be honest.

  748. Where's your heart

  749. set?

  750. Is it on him?

  751. Or is it distracted

  752. from the king

  753. by other things

  754. that you love

  755. and you long for

  756. just a little bit more?

  757. Listen to Jesus.

  758. There's a great

  759. separation coming.

  760. I tell you

  761. in that night

  762. there will be

  763. two in one bed.

  764. One will be taken

  765. and the other left.

  766. There will be

  767. two women

  768. grinding together.

  769. One will be taken

  770. and the other

  771. left.

  772. A day where

  773. two people are sleeping,

  774. two people are working,

  775. otherwise

  776. very similar people

  777. receive very

  778. different destinies.

  779. Upon what basis?

  780. Are they prepared

  781. for trusting

  782. in the king?

  783. Don't tell yourself

  784. you'll think about it later.

  785. Don't say other things

  786. are more important.

  787. Don't let the busyness

  788. of life,

  789. lots of good things

  790. to do,

  791. keep you from

  792. prioritizing

  793. eternity.

  794. busy.

  795. Because Jesus

  796. will return

  797. suddenly

  798. in the midst

  799. of that normal

  800. busy life

  801. and you must

  802. be prepared.

  803. Perhaps

  804. taken aback

  805. or not wanting

  806. to miss out

  807. again on any of this,

  808. the disciples

  809. ask,

  810. where?

  811. And Jesus

  812. says,

  813. where the corpse

  814. is,

  815. there the

  816. vultures

  817. will gather.

  818. Now,

  819. in some ways

  820. that's not a

  821. particularly

  822. complicated

  823. proverb to

  824. understand.

  825. He's saying

  826. you'll see it,

  827. you won't miss it,

  828. you'll be able

  829. to look up

  830. from where you are

  831. and find out

  832. what's going on,

  833. but there's lots

  834. of ways to say

  835. that,

  836. aren't there?

  837. This is Jesus

  838. in a very

  839. pointedly

  840. serious

  841. way

  842. saying it's

  843. coming

  844. and you'll

  845. see it

  846. and death

  847. will be there.

  848. There will be

  849. death around

  850. and you'll

  851. notice it.

  852. Be warned!

  853. So that's a summary

  854. of what Jesus

  855. is teaching

  856. in this passage.

  857. God's kingdom

  858. may look different

  859. from what you expect,

  860. but you won't

  861. miss the king

  862. when he returns

  863. to reign,

  864. so don't let

  865. suffering cause

  866. you to lose

  867. hope.

  868. After all,

  869. the king must

  870. suffer too,

  871. but come what may,

  872. don't get so

  873. preoccupied

  874. with your life

  875. that you're

  876. unprepared

  877. for the return

  878. of the king.

  879. That's pretty

  880. direct talk,

  881. isn't it?

  882. You know,

  883. as I was

  884. pondering

  885. this week

  886. Jesus

  887. speaking to us

  888. this directly

  889. and this clearly,

  890. it began

  891. to have

  892. this weight

  893. on my heart.

  894. What's Jesus

  895. trying to say

  896. to us?

  897. I looked back

  898. to the end

  899. of Luke 9,

  900. seems like

  901. a long time

  902. ago.

  903. The end

  904. of Luke 9

  905. is where

  906. Jesus tells

  907. us he set

  908. his face

  909. to Jerusalem.

  910. He said,

  911. I'm going

  912. to the cross

  913. and everything

  914. starts to head

  915. in that direction.

  916. For us

  917. here at Southwood,

  918. that's been

  919. really this

  920. entire school

  921. year that

  922. we've been

  923. following Jesus

  924. as he teaches

  925. about the kingdom

  926. on the way

  927. to the cross.

  928. And for some

  929. reason,

  930. for the first

  931. time this week,

  932. it kind of

  933. sunk in to me

  934. that I seem

  935. to be talking

  936. about eternity

  937. a lot.

  938. Heaven

  939. and hell

  940. and eternal

  941. significance

  942. and being ready

  943. and it's come

  944. up over and over

  945. and I look back

  946. and sure enough,

  947. that's what Jesus

  948. has been talking

  949. about.

  950. It's interesting,

  951. isn't it,

  952. that as he makes

  953. his way to the

  954. cross to die

  955. for immortal

  956. souls,

  957. that these issues

  958. of eternity

  959. keep being

  960. pressed in

  961. to us.

  962. He doesn't

  963. want anybody

  964. to miss it.

  965. Over and over

  966. he gathers

  967. his followers

  968. around and says,

  969. listen to me.

  970. There's something

  971. you can't miss

  972. here.

  973. It's on his

  974. heart for us.

  975. Just in these

  976. few chapters

  977. we've walked

  978. through,

  979. he said things

  980. like,

  981. we must repent

  982. or we too

  983. will perish.

  984. That there's a

  985. place of weeping

  986. and gnashing

  987. of teeth

  988. for some

  989. while others

  990. feast at the

  991. banquet of God.

  992. A banquet

  993. where a lot

  994. of religious

  995. insiders

  996. are not

  997. actually going

  998. to be present

  999. although they

  1000. expect to be.

  1001. But actually

  1002. you must be

  1003. willing to leave

  1004. everything else

  1005. in order to

  1006. follow him.

  1007. He even put

  1008. words in the

  1009. mouth of a

  1010. rich man

  1011. warning everyone

  1012. he loved about

  1013. the seriousness

  1014. of eternity.

  1015. How many

  1016. times have I

  1017. stood up here

  1018. and said,

  1019. this is really

  1020. weighty.

  1021. We must

  1022. really consider

  1023. eternity.

  1024. We must

  1025. repent and

  1026. embrace

  1027. Jesus.

  1028. Y'all,

  1029. please,

  1030. please hear

  1031. the call

  1032. of Jesus.

  1033. He's speaking

  1034. clearly and

  1035. seriously and

  1036. lovingly to

  1037. you.

  1038. It's a

  1039. drum that he

  1040. continues to

  1041. beat.

  1042. He's not

  1043. mincing words.

  1044. He's saying,

  1045. trust me

  1046. today.

  1047. Here's what

  1048. God's

  1049. particularly

  1050. been putting

  1051. on my

  1052. heart in

  1053. light of

  1054. this.

  1055. We've been

  1056. watching Jesus

  1057. and what I'll

  1058. call the

  1059. sober passion

  1060. that he has

  1061. for bringing

  1062. this eternity

  1063. in front of

  1064. everyone who's

  1065. around him.

  1066. As he

  1067. pleads with

  1068. people passionately,

  1069. I was asking

  1070. myself,

  1071. do I share

  1072. Jesus'

  1073. sober passion?

  1074. This passage

  1075. really drove it

  1076. home for me.

1077. Let me say it to

  1078. you this way.

  1079. There's an

  1080. eternal separation

  1081. coming with

  1082. two different

  1083. outcomes that

  1084. couldn't possibly

  1085. be further

  1086. apart.

  1087. One of

  1088. eternal

  1089. destruction

  1090. and one

  1091. of everlasting

  1092. glory.

  1093. And two

  1094. spouses

  1095. sharing the

  1096. same bed

  1097. for a few

  1098. years will

  1099. go to

  1100. different

  1101. places

  1102. forever.

  1103. And two

  1104. people working

  1105. in the same

  1106. office building

  1107. on the

  1108. arsenal

  1109. will be

  1110. apart from

  1111. each other

  1112. for all of

  1113. eternity.

  1114. And two

  1115. moms playing

  1116. with their

  1117. kids on

  1118. the same

  1119. playground

  1120. won't play

  1121. together

  1122. again.

  1123. And two

  1124. students

  1125. sitting in

  1126. the same

  1127. classroom on

  1128. the same

  1129. campus for a

  1130. whole semester

  1131. will spend

  1132. eternity in

  1133. two different

  1134. places.

  1135. And two

  1136. people sitting

  1137. shoulder to

  1138. shoulder in

  1139. the same

  1140. church pew

  1141. week after

  1142. week and

  1143. year after

  1144. year will

  1145. do that

  1146. apart from

  1147. each other

  1148. for eternity.

  1149. And that

  1150. has to

  1151. break our

  1152. hearts.

  1153. It's not a

  1154. reality we

  1155. like to talk

  1156. about a lot

  1157. but it's also

  1158. not one Jesus

  1159. is unclear

  1160. on.

  1161. Does it

  1162. break your

  1163. heart?

  1164. Who comes

  1165. to mind

  1166. mind for

  1167. you?

  1168. Is that

  1169. not why God

  1170. has us

  1171. here?

  1172. Isn't that

  1173. why he's put

  1174. you in

  1175. Huntsville?

  1176. In your

  1177. house?

  1178. In your

  1179. neighborhood?

  1180. In your

  1181. workplace?

  1182. With your

  1183. friends?

  1184. Are we as

  1185. committed to

  1186. eternal souls

  1187. and eternal

  1188. realities as

  1189. Jesus is?

  1190. All the

  1191. examples of

  1192. God's

  1193. destruction

  1194. coming on

  1195. many with

  1196. a few being

  1197. rescued are

  1198. sobering but

  1199. perhaps none

  1200. more than

  1201. Lot's wife.

  1202. Because she

  1203. reminds us that

  1204. nearness to

  1205. kingdom people

  1206. does not

  1207. equal

  1208. preparation

  1209. for the

  1210. kingdom.

  1211. She was

  1212. walking right

  1213. there with

  1214. those who

  1215. were being

  1216. rescued and

  1217. found herself

  1218. not.

  1219. There are

  1220. family,

  1221. friends,

  1222. others we

  1223. would call

  1224. loved ones.

  1225. And y'all I

  1226. think every

  1227. neighbor is

  1228. supposed to

  1229. be a loved

  1230. one, yes?

  1231. Do we

  1232. really actively

  1233. love them?

  1234. It's not

  1235. merely about

  1236. wanting to

  1237. spend eternity

  1238. with them,

  1239. although that's

  1240. sweet and

  1241. desirable, but

  1242. wanting them to

  1243. spend eternity

  1244. with Jesus.

  1245. Pastor Peter,

  1246. when we were

  1247. talking about

  1248. this passage

  1249. this week,

  1250. said what

  1251. comes to

  1252. mind for

  1253. him is are

  1254. we soul

  1255. conscious?

  1256. I love

  1257. that.

  1258. Consider for

  1259. a minute how

  1260. you think of

  1261. and treat the

  1262. people in

  1263. your life.

  1264. Are they

  1265. merely a

  1266. means to

  1267. an end

  1268. for you?

  1269. Ways to be

  1270. entertained?

  1271. Someone who

  1272. can care for

  1273. your kids,

  1274. an avenue for

  1275. you to get

  1276. food or make

  1277. money or pass

  1278. the time?

  1279. Is that

  1280. what people

  1281. are some

  1282. days for

  1283. you?

  1284. Or do you

  1285. think of

  1286. them as

  1287. eternal souls?

  1288. Do you

  1289. consider their

  1290. eternal destiny?

  1291. Are you

  1292. soul conscious?

  1293. Now listen,

  1294. that doesn't

  1295. mean that we

  1296. all need to

  1297. go rent

  1298. megaphones

  1299. this afternoon,

  1300. drive around

  1301. Huntsville

  1302. announcing heaven

  1303. and hell to

  1304. everyone within

  1305. earshot.

  1306. It doesn't

  1307. have to look

  1308. like that.

  1309. It also

  1310. doesn't mean

  1311. that we

  1312. get to put

  1313. on headphones

  1314. and start

  1315. going through

  1316. life,

  1317. oblivious to

  1318. everyone around

  1319. us,

  1320. driving by,

  1321. missing eternal

  1322. souls all around

  1323. you every day,

  1324. forgetting the

  1325. priority of

  1326. Jesus for

  1327. each of them,

  1328. for each of

  1329. us.

  1330. Al Eller

  1331. prayed last

  1332. week,

  1333. people need

  1334. the Lord,

  1335. and he said,

  1336. Jesus, I need

  1337. you.

  1338. This is not

  1339. us versus

  1340. them.

  1341. This is

  1342. all of us

  1343. together

  1344. needing

  1345. Jesus.

  1346. So what

  1347. do we do?

  1348. If our

  1349. hearts start

  1350. beating with

  1351. this same

  1352. passion that

  1353. Jesus has,

  1354. what do we

  1355. do?

  1356. You know,

  1357. it's interesting,

  1358. there's one

  1359. specific thing

  1360. we're told to

  1361. do, and

  1362. it's to pray

  1363. persistently.

  1364. It's the next

  1365. verse actually,

  1366. chapter 18,

  1367. it's a passage

  1368. connected to

  1369. this one still,

  1370. Jesus tells a

  1371. parable,

  1372. the first

  1373. verse says,

  1374. to teach

  1375. them, in

  1376. light of all

  1377. these things,

  1378. that they

  1379. ought always

  1380. to pray,

  1381. and never

  1382. to give up.

  1383. For someone

  1384. who's on your

  1385. heart,

  1386. for people you

  1387. haven't met yet,

  1388. or you'll be

  1389. with this week,

  1390. we must be

  1391. on our knees

  1392. for our

  1393. neighbors.

  1394. prayers.

  1395. If you need

  1396. somewhere to

  1397. start, take

  1398. this prayer

  1399. guide, and

  1400. the very

  1401. first item

  1402. this week,

  1403. pray for

  1404. specific

  1405. opportunities

  1406. to engage

  1407. meaningfully

  1408. with those

  1409. in your

  1410. neighborhood

  1411. who do

  1412. not know

  1413. Jesus.

  1414. There's one

  1415. if you need

  1416. something to

  1417. pick, pray

  1418. that this

  1419. week, and

  1420. then don't

  1421. stop praying.

  1422. Keep

  1423. praying

  1424. persistently.

  1425. I don't know

  1426. anything better

  1427. than praying

  1428. for someone

  1429. to help lead

  1430. our hearts

  1431. toward loving

  1432. them

  1433. intentionally.

  1434. Don't be

  1435. preoccupied

  1436. with your

  1437. life.

  1438. If you get

  1439. preoccupied

  1440. with something,

  1441. let it be

  1442. with giving

  1443. others a

  1444. taste of

  1445. the kingdom,

  1446. showing them

  1447. the love

  1448. of King

  1449. Jesus.

  1450. How can I

  1451. love them?

  1452. How can we

  1453. get more

  1454. time together?

  1455. Some of us

  1456. are very well

  1457. trained at this

  1458. point to say,

  1459. oh, I don't

  1460. want to make

  1461. somebody a

  1462. project to

  1463. treat them as

  1464. though they're

  1465. just something

  1466. I can use to

  1467. get a feather

  1468. in my Christian

  1469. cap.

  1470. Y'all,

  1471. that's true,

  1472. but can I

  1473. be honest

  1474. with you?

  1475. That's just

  1476. by and large

  1477. not our

  1478. problem.

  1479. Talking about

  1480. Jesus too

  1481. much with

  1482. other people.

  1483. When you

  1484. have two of

  1485. your friends

  1486. come to me

  1487. and complain

  1488. that you

  1489. won't leave

  1490. them alone

  1491. about Jesus

  1492. and you

  1493. keep sharing

  1494. your heart

  1495. about eternity

  1496. with them,

  1497. then we'll

  1498. talk about

  1499. that problem.

  1500. Let's not

  1501. hide behind

  1502. that.

  1503. avoid loving

  1504. people intentionally

  1505. and sharing

  1506. with them

  1507. the hope

  1508. of our

  1509. Savior.

  1510. Last thing,

  1511. we get to do

  1512. that with

  1513. great joy.

  1514. What's so

  1515. exciting about

  1516. this?

  1517. It's because I

  1518. could berate

  1519. you and say,

  1520. leave here with

  1521. a guilt trip

  1522. that you should

  1523. do this more

  1524. and if you

  1525. don't,

  1526. your friends

  1527. and neighbors

  1528. will go to

  1529. hell.

  1530. Y'all,

  1531. what's the

  1532. one thing

  1533. that must

  1534. be done

  1535. to secure

  1536. their eternity?

  1537. There's one

  1538. thing that's

  1539. required

  1540. and it's

  1541. not on your

  1542. list.

  1543. What did

  1544. Jesus tell us?

  1545. One thing

  1546. that must

  1547. happen,

  1548. he must

  1549. suffer

  1550. and be

  1551. rejected.

  1552. He must

  1553. go to the

  1554. cross

  1555. and he

  1556. has

  1557. done it.

  1558. It's

  1559. finished.

  1560. All that's

  1561. needed

  1562. to secure

  1563. your eternity,

  1564. my eternity

  1565. and that

  1566. of your

  1567. neighbors,

  1568. Jesus

  1569. has

  1570. done

  1571. and so

  1572. we get

  1573. to go

  1574. not with

  1575. intense

  1576. pressure

  1577. but with

  1578. great joy

  1579. to tell

  1580. them about

  1581. a Savior

  1582. who loves

  1583. them and

  1584. has died

  1585. for them.

  1586. It's why

  1587. we keep

  1588. pointing each

  1589. other to

  1590. Him.

  1591. As we

  1592. wait in

  1593. every

  1594. circumstance

  1595. for Him

  1596. to return,

  1597. we remember

  1598. that the

  1599. hard work

  1600. to secure

  1601. eternity

  1602. has been

  1603. done.

  1604. It's

  1605. over.

  1606. So we

  1607. exhale.

  1608. So we

  1609. rest in

  1610. hope.

  1611. And so

  1612. we rejoice

  1613. in telling

  1614. forth the

  1615. glories of

  1616. the eternal

  1617. kingdom and

  1618. the gracious

  1619. King to

  1620. everyone,

  1621. everywhere.

  1622. Amen?

  1623. Let's

  1624. pray.

  1625. Jesus,

  1626. you have

  1627. given us

  1628. eternal

  1629. hope.

  1630. Let us

  1631. see it

  1632. clearly this

  1633. morning.

  1634. And would

  1635. you break

  1636. our hearts

  1637. for the

  1638. reality

  1639. of separate

  1640. eternal

  1641. destinies?

  1642. of anyone

  1643. not getting

  1644. to be

  1645. with you

  1646. forever.

  1647. See,

  1648. the glory

  1649. of God

  1650. in the

  1651. face of

  1652. Jesus

  1653. Christ.

  1654. And would

  1655. we long

  1656. that all

  1657. of our

  1658. family and

  1659. friends,

  1660. that all

  1661. of Huntsville,

  1662. that everyone

  1663. we touch

  1664. would be there

  1665. with us

  1666. to know

  1667. Him,

  1668. to glory

  1669. in Him

  1670. forever.

  1671. forever.

  1672. We ask

  1673. it in

  1674. His name.

  1675. Amen.
