  1. You are listening to a message from Southwood Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama.

  2. Our passion is to experience and express grace. Join us.

  3. God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, we do pray for your help.

  4. We always need your help.

  5. Every moment, every day.

  6. Amen.

  7. We are especially needy as we come to your word and seek to know it and understand it,

  8. to see it cut to our hearts, that it would shape us and mold us as you would have it.

  9. And so we ask that you would speak this morning as we look to your word.

  10. In Jesus' name, amen.

  11. Last Sunday, I had the privilege of preaching in Memphis as the church that I grew up in celebrates its 50th anniversary, 50 years as a church.

  12. And looking back 50 years to remember God's faithfulness is really neat.

  13. But God has been faithful a lot longer than 50 years.

  14. He's been a God of redemption since before He created the world.

  15. That's who He is.

  16. Looking back to the Old Testament even to see His character on display generation after generation

  17. is a beautiful reminder to us of who God has always been and who He continues to be today and in our lives.

  18. So this summer, we're going to do that for a few weeks to look at what we will call redemption stories in the Old Testament.

  19. You can see a couple of them up there.

  20. You might be able to figure out which ones they are.

  21. He's been working to redeem for thousands and thousands of years.

  22. And some pastors and churches these days are critiquing the Old Testament.

  23. They're fearful of the wrathful God that we will find there and not like and be turned off by.

  24. But we will see there a God who is indeed holy and who is and has always been all about redemption, full of grace.

  25. So that's going to expand our vision of God's greatness, of His love.

  26. That vision we have that Paul tells us in Ephesians is the one thing that is absolutely essential

  27. essential to us being the people in the church God has called us to be.

  28. That we would have a glorious vision of God, of His great love for us.

  29. And as we look back to the Old Testament, it's going to expand that vision that we have.

  30. That we might love God as we should.

  31. That we might be used of Him to transform Huntsville and the world.

  32. We need that vision.

  33. I love being able to go to the Old Testament for that.

  34. One other reason that we pastors wanted to spend some time in the Old Testament this summer

  35. besides the fact that we've been in Luke for 17 years, not that long, just a couple of years.

  36. We're almost finished, by the way.

  37. Many of these great stories are stories that we and our kids know and love.

  38. And so we get a chance as we look at some of these Sunday school stories and some others

  39. to understand stories that we love in the context of the big story.

  40. God's big story.

  41. So that's an opportunity we'll have all through this summer.

  42. This morning we're going to start near the beginning of God's big story

  43. with a familiar episode.

  44. The story of Adam and Eve.

  45. A serpent.

  46. Forbidden fruit.

  47. The fallout of the first sin as they rebel against the Holy Creator.

  48. Is there redemption there in that story?

  49. Absolutely.

  50. Because God is here and that's who He is.

  51. Read with me in Genesis chapter 3 the whole story

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  52. and then we'll look back at parts of it together.

  53. Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made.

  54. He said to the woman,

  55. Did God actually say you shall not eat of any tree in the garden?

  56. And the woman said to the serpent,

  57. We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden,

  58. but God said you shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden,

  59. neither shall you touch it lest you die.

  60. But the serpent said to the woman,

  61. You will not surely die,

  62. for God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened

  63. and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.

  64. So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food

  65. and that it was a delight to the eyes

  66. and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise,

  67. she took of its fruit and ate.

  68. She also gave some to her husband who was with her and he ate.

  69. Then the eyes of both were opened and they knew that they were naked

  70. and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths.

  71. And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day

  72. and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God

  73. among the trees of the garden.

  74. But the Lord God called to the man and said to him,

  75. Where are you?

  76. And he said, I heard the sound of you in the garden

  77. and I was afraid because I was naked and I hid myself.

  78. He said, Who told you that you were naked?

  79. Have you eaten of the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?

  80. The man said, The woman whom you gave to be with me,

  81. she gave me fruit of the tree and I ate.

  82. And the Lord God said to the woman, What is this that you have done?

  83. And the woman said, The serpent deceived me and I ate.

  84. The Lord God said to the serpent,

  85. Because you have done this, cursed are you above all livestock

  86. and above all beasts of the field.

  87. On your belly you shall go and dust you shall eat all the days of your life.

  88. I will put enmity between you and the woman and between your offspring and her offspring.

  89. He shall bruise your head and you shall bruise his heel.

  90. To the woman he said, I will surely multiply your pain and childbearing.

  91. In pain you shall bring forth children.

  92. Your desire shall be for your husband and he shall rule over you.

  93. And to Adam he said, Because you have listened to the voice of your wife

  94. and have eaten of the tree of which I commanded you,

  95. you shall not eat of it.

  96. Cursed is the ground because of you.

  97. In pain you shall eat of it all the days of your life.

  98. Thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you.

  99. And you shall eat the plants of the field.

  100. By the sweat of your face you shall eat bread

  101. till you return to the ground.

  102. For out of it you were taken.

  103. For you are dust.

  104. And to dust you shall return.

  105. The man called his wife's name Eve

  106. because she was the mother of all living.

  107. And the Lord God made for Adam and for his wife

  108. garments of skins and clothed them.

  109. Then the Lord God said,

  110. Behold the man has become like one of us in knowing good and evil.

  111. Now lest he reach out his hand and take also of the tree of life

  112. and eat and live forever.

  113. Therefore the Lord God sent him out from the garden of Eden

  114. to work the ground from which he was taken.

  115. He drove out the man and at the east of the garden of Eden

  116. he placed the cherubim and a flaming sword

  117. that turned every way to guard the way to the tree of life.

  118. Thus far God's holy, inerrant, infallible word

  119. for which we give him great thanks.

  120. It was a really hot August day

  121. that I first learned a lot

  122. about my offensive line coach

  123. in high school.

  124. I was a freshman on the football team.

  125. It was the first time through two-a-day practices.

  126. It was sweltering out there.

  127. I didn't know what it would feel like.

  128. And I watched as one of the upperclassmen

  129. tried to block his own way,

  130. the way he wanted to do it

  131. rather than the way that the coach had taught us.

  132. And he ended up face first on the ground.

  133. He could have gotten seriously injured

  134. trying to do it his own way.

  135. And to remind him of that,

  136. he got a metal visor clip

  137. from my coach on the back of his helmet.

  138. And the way he reacted,

  139. wincing in pain as the ringing in his ears,

  140. I said,

  141. I never want that ringing in my ears.

  142. I'm sure of that.

  143. But then he decided to talk back to the coach.

  144. And he got sent in full pads,

  145. all of his football gear,

  146. to run up and down the steep hill

  147. up to the locker room

  148. for the rest of practice.

  149. Dripping with sweat,

  150. you can imagine he didn't run too long.

  151. Pretty soon he was crawling up the hill

  152. and almost rolling down it.

  153. I knew,

  154. as I watched this develop,

  155. that coach took quite seriously

  156. both blocking your own way

  157. and the dangers that come with that

  158. and disrespecting his authority.

  159. Adam and Eve had been promised

  160. that disobeying God

  161. would have frightful consequences.

  162. And man's first sin here,

  163. determining to distrust his good creator

  164. and insist on his own way,

  165. indeed receives God's just punishment.

  166. We learn right away about God

  167. that he takes sin quite seriously,

  168. don't we?

  169. I mean, just look at how this develops

  170. for a second in this passage.

  171. Satan, having inhabited the serpent,

  172. begins to cast doubt on the word of God.

  173. Did God really say?

  174. Are you sure?

  175. But beyond that,

  176. he casts doubt on the character of God.

  177. Can God really be trusted?

  178. Does he really have your best in mind?

  179. Is he really good?

  180. Y'all, what a monstrous evil.

  181. Right?

  182. Can you imagine this?

  183. This God who has just created

  184. this glorious, good world

  185. and put Adam and Eve in the midst of it

  186. and said,

  187. here's everything you need.

  188. Eat fruit from all these trees.

  189. Look at all these animals.

  190. And I'm going to walk and talk with you

  191. every day with me.

  192. And evil suggests

  193. that he might not be good.

  194. Evil questions his goodness?

  195. Preposterous!

  196. No way will they buy that.

  197. I mean, we would never.

  198. But Eve begins to wonder, doesn't she?

  199. And soon, Adam and Eve decide

  200. to try their own way

  201. rather than God's.

  202. It may seem astounding,

  203. but we still try to handle relationships

  204. and our marriages our own way

  205. rather than God's, don't we?

  206. We try to handle our bodies

  207. and our sexuality

  208. our own way

  209. rather than God's.

  210. We try to handle our money,

  211. our time,

  212. our priorities,

  213. our own way

  214. rather than God's.

  215. And it's dangerous to us.

  216. And God knows that.

  217. The Creator's just judgment is severe.

  218. The man and woman

  219. must not be left to think

  220. that they can find life their own way.

  221. It's not true.

  222. And so God pronounces curses

  223. on all of creation.

  224. In fact,

  225. right on the places

  226. they hurt the most.

  227. Adam and Eve were created

  228. to reflect God's image

  229. by filling

  230. and subduing

  231. the earth.

  232. Two things He told them to do.

  233. Now,

  234. filling

  235. will be hard

  236. and painful.

  237. Pain and childbirth.

  238. Now,

  239. subduing

  240. will be hard

  241. and painful.

  242. Thorns,

  243. thistles,

  244. a cursed

  245. ground.

  246. But it gets worse.

  247. As you read through

  248. the rest of the story,

  249. what happens to Adam and Eve?

  250. Banishment

  251. from God's presence,

  252. right?

  253. Their closest friend.

  254. Out of the garden.

  255. Sent away.

  256. And the spiritual

  257. and eventually

  258. physical death

  259. that they'd been promised

  260. if they disobeyed.

  261. all the good creation

  262. broken.

  263. Those around you

  264. hurt

  265. by your failure.

  266. Can you imagine

  267. for a minute

  268. the guilt

  269. and shame

  270. that Adam and Eve

  271. must have felt

  272. as that sunk in?

  273. As they experienced

  274. the Holy Creator

  275. pronouncing these

  276. curses,

  277. sending them away.

  278. How did we get

  279. taken in by that?

  280. We've blown it

  281. and we can't fix it.

  282. Have you felt

  283. the shame

  284. of sin

  285. and failure?

  286. Kids,

  287. have you felt

  288. so embarrassed

  289. or ashamed

  290. at disobeying

  291. your parents?

  292. At something

  293. you've looked at?

  294. At something

  295. you've said?

  296. the first audience

  297. of the book

  298. of Genesis

  299. had felt this.

  300. That the Exodus

  301. generation

  302. that God had just

  303. brought out of Egypt

  304. now they're

  305. wandering

  306. in the wilderness.

  307. Why?

  308. Because they

  309. didn't trust

  310. God.

  311. And they

  312. doubted Him

  313. and insisted

  314. on their own way

  315. didn't they?

  316. And so

  317. here they are

  318. wandering

  319. and perhaps

  320. wondering

  321. how will this

  322. God respond?

  323. What's He like

  324. anyway?

  325. And they learn

  326. that He does

  327. take sin

  328. seriously

  329. don't they?

  330. They're tasting

  331. that when they

  332. get this story

  333. from Moses.

  334. But is that

  335. the end of the story?

  336. Is that all

  337. there is?

  338. See

  339. all the other

  340. gods that

  341. they've heard about

  342. in Egypt

  343. and the other

  344. nations around them

  345. those other

  346. gods are like

  347. that?

  348. They take sin

  349. seriously.

  350. They're

  351. terrifying.

  352. Retributive.

  353. You need to

  354. watch out

  355. or they'll

  356. get you.

  357. Is Yahweh

  358. any different?

  359. Is there

  360. any hope

  361. for us

  362. in our failure

  363. now that we've

  364. blown it?

  365. Maybe you're

  366. wondering that

  367. this morning.

  368. Here's the

  369. good news

  370. God's

  371. of this story.

  372. In the midst

  373. of our failures

  374. which are huge.

  375. The holy

  376. creator

  377. and He is

  378. holy

  379. and He

  380. takes sin

  381. very seriously

  382. He is also

  383. our gracious

  384. redeemer.

  385. And this makes

  386. all the difference

  387. y'all.

  388. There's no other

  389. God like

  390. this.

  391. Look at how we

  392. see God's

  393. character on

  394. display here.

  395. How do we

  396. and the

  397. Israelites

  398. learn about

  399. a redeeming

  400. God who

  401. gives failures

  402. hope?

  403. Well it

  404. starts with

  405. a question.

  406. Where are

  407. you?

  408. Nearly every

  409. day when I

  410. get home from

  411. work my

  412. five-year-old

  413. Lily runs

  414. and hides

  415. away from

  416. me.

  417. That's kind

  418. of a thing.

  419. It's a game

  420. right?

  421. Except that

  422. I know

  423. where she

  424. is.

  425. Invariably

  426. Lily has

  427. run up

  428. to her

  429. bed

  430. and hidden

  431. herself under

  432. a blanket

  433. creating an

  434. unmistakable

  435. lump in the

  436. exact shape

  437. of a five-year-old

  438. little girl.

  439. It's hard to

  440. miss.

  441. But she hides

  442. there and I

  443. walk up the

  444. stairs and I

  445. say Lily

  446. where are

  447. you?

  448. Now I know

  449. where Lily

  450. is.

  451. But I

  452. I ask

  453. where are

  454. you?

  455. And so

  456. she gets

  457. engaged,

  458. right?

  459. She can

  460. make noises

  461. to give me

  462. hints or

  463. usually she

  464. just starts

  465. giggling

  466. underneath the

  467. blanket so

  468. now it's a

  469. moving lump

  470. even easier

  471. to spot.

  472. And I

  473. say where

  474. are you?

  475. Not to

  476. get an

  477. answer but

  478. to get her

  479. engagement because

  480. I love her and

  481. being in

  482. relationship with

  483. her, right?

  484. If I know

  485. where Lily is

  486. under her

  487. blanket, do

  488. you think

  489. God, the

  490. Creator knew

  491. where Adam

  492. was behind

  493. his fig

  494. leaves?

  495. Yeah.

  496. Yes he

  497. did.

  498. And yet he

  499. says, where

  500. are you?

  501. Here comes

  502. God on his

  503. daily walk

  504. in the garden

  505. as he always

  506. does.

  507. Used to

  508. being with

  509. the man and

  510. the woman in

  511. intimate

  512. relationship.

  513. He loves

  514. them, doesn't

  515. he?

  516. He comes to

  517. walk with

  518. them.

  519. And yet

  520. today they're

  521. not running

  522. out to greet

  523. him.

  524. They're hiding,

  525. aren't they?

  526. Verse 7,

  527. they sewed

  528. fig leaves

  529. together and

  530. made themselves

  531. loincloths and

  532. they heard the

  533. sound of the

  534. Lord God walking

  535. in the garden.

  536. They knew that

  537. sound.

  538. He always came

  539. to walk with

  540. them in the

  541. cool of the

  542. day and the

  543. man and his

  544. wife did what?

  545. Hid

  546. themselves.

  547. from the

  548. presence of

  549. the Lord

  550. God among

  551. the trees of

  552. the garden.

  553. And the

  554. first question

  555. that God

  556. asks in the

  557. Bible's whole

  558. story, it's

  559. not, what

  560. were you

  561. thinking?

  562. It's not, how

  563. could you

  564. possibly?

  565. What's the

  566. first thing he

  567. asks?

  568. Where are

  569. you?

  570. God's not

  571. looking for

  572. information.

  573. God's

  574. pursuing Adam

  575. in his

  576. guilt and

  577. shame to

  578. engage him in

  579. relationship

  580. because he

  581. loves him and

  582. being in

  583. relationship with

  584. him.

  585. A pastor

  586. friend of mine

  587. recently said

  588. to me that

  589. God asks

  590. fallen man

  591. here, where

  592. are you?

  593. And we are

  594. still avoiding

  595. that question

  596. and hiding

  597. from him.

  598. We love to

  599. hide, don't

  600. we?

  601. Adam says

  602. he was

  603. ashamed and

  604. afraid and

  605. so he

  606. hid.

  607. He didn't

  608. run out and

  609. throw himself at

  610. God's feet and

  611. say, oh

  612. father, I'm

  613. right here, I'm

  614. feeling the pain

  615. of my mistakes,

  616. the embarrassment

  617. of my failures, I

  618. need you desperately,

  619. here I am.

  620. No, he went to

  621. the fig leaves.

  622. Man, I get

  623. that.

  624. He'd really

  625. blown it.

  626. Big time

  627. failure, genuine

  628. guilt and

  629. when I feel

  630. that, my

  631. instinct is to

  632. hide.

  633. Don't let

  634. anybody know.

  635. Some of you

  636. hide the way

  637. that I often

  638. do, behind

  639. busyness.

  640. Just so no

  641. one can know

  642. where my heart

  643. really is.

  644. I'll be really

  645. busy, I'll

  646. avoid God's

  647. word, avoid

  648. prayer, just

  649. let's do a lot.

  650. Nobody will

  651. really know

  652. what's going

  653. on.

  654. Maybe you

  655. hide by not

  656. telling your

  657. parents what's

  658. really going

  659. on.

  660. Maybe you

  661. hide behind

  662. blame shifting

  663. like Adam.

  664. This woman,

  665. you gave

  666. me.

  667. It's always

  668. someone else's

  669. fault, right?

  670. Plenty of

  671. people to

  672. blame.

  673. Maybe you

  674. hide behind

  675. alcohol,

  676. behind

  677. religiosity,

  678. being a good

  679. person,

  680. behind humor,

  681. behind

  682. intellect,

  683. telling

  684. yourself as

  685. you hide

  686. that no

  687. one, not

  688. even God,

  689. really knows

  690. you.

  691. We all have

  692. our favorite

  693. hiding spots,

  694. don't we?

  695. And of

  696. course,

  697. they're fig

  698. leaves.

  699. God sees

  700. right through

  701. us.

  702. He knows

  703. where we

  704. are, but

  705. we hide.

  706. Maybe you're

  707. hiding this

  708. morning.

  709. God says,

  710. where are

  711. you?

  712. This won't

  713. sound like

  714. good news,

  715. perhaps, if

  716. you're hiding

  717. from Him,

  718. but it is.

  719. No matter

  720. how good you

  721. are at

  722. hiding,

  723. your father

  724. is even

  725. better at

  726. seeking.

  727. It's not

  728. even like

  729. the odds

  730. of me

  731. finding Lily

  732. under her

  733. blanket.

  734. He's way

  735. better at

  736. seeking than

  737. we are

  738. at hiding.

  739. He pursues

  740. you because

  741. He loves

  742. you.

  743. And that's

  744. good news

  745. because God

  746. makes a

  747. promise that

  748. He's not

  749. coming merely

  750. to shame

  751. us and

  752. punish us.

  753. He's seeking

  754. us for our

  755. good, to

  756. redeem what

  757. once was

  758. lost.

  759. God pledges

  760. to remove

  761. our guilt

  762. and shame.

  763. Isn't it

  764. remarkable that

  765. the first

  766. promise in

  767. the Bible

  768. comes in

  769. this

  770. passage?

  771. The one

  772. where we

  773. blow it

  774. and the

  775. Creator King

  776. has just

  777. been spurned

  778. by His

  779. creatures,

  780. rebellion

  781. is rampant,

  782. here come

  783. the curses,

  784. and the

  785. verse that

  786. Christians since

  787. the first

  788. century have

  789. referred to

  790. as the

  791. Proto-Evangelium,

  792. the first

  793. promise of

  794. the gospel

  795. comes in

  796. the midst

  797. of God

  798. pronouncing

  799. curses.

  800. Verse

  801. 15,

  802. I will put

  803. enmity between

  804. you and the

  805. woman,

  806. between your

  807. offspring and

  808. her offspring,

  809. he shall

  810. bruise your

  811. head and

  812. you shall

  813. bruise his

  814. heel.

  815. What's God

  816. saying?

  817. I haven't

  818. given up on

  819. these failures.

  820. sinners.

  821. There's a

  822. singular

  823. person

  824. coming from

  825. this disobedient

  826. woman who

  827. will bring

  828. hope.

  829. There's a

  830. child I'll

  831. send who

  832. will defeat

  833. the serpent

  834. once and

  835. for all.

  836. Listen to

  837. this promise,

  838. y'all.

  839. Right at the

  840. low point

  841. in the story,

  842. right?

  843. There's a

  844. certainty

  845. that evil

  846. will

  847. lose.

  848. that your

  849. arch enemies

  850. will be

  851. defeated,

  852. that Satan

  853. will be

  854. crushed and

  855. all creation

  856. will be

  857. redeemed.

  858. That's what

  859. God's saying.

  860. Adam and

  861. Eve, don't

  862. lose hope

  863. in your

  864. failure.

  865. Israelites

  866. wandering in

  867. the wilderness,

  868. don't lose

  869. hope in

  870. your failure.

  871. Southwood,

  872. dear friends,

  873. don't lose

  874. hope in

  875. your failure.

  876. The one

  877. true God

  878. is a

  879. redeeming

  880. God.

  881. That's the

  882. unchanging

  883. nature of

  884. his character.

  885. That's who

  886. he is.

  887. Do you want

  888. to know how

  889. gracious your

  890. father is?

  891. Yes?

  892. Yes, you do

  893. want to know?

  894. See, ask me,

  895. right?

  896. How gracious

  897. is he?

  898. Okay, can you

  899. ask me that?

  900. One, two,

  901. three.

  902. How gracious is he?

  903. That was really

  904. good, all

  905. talking during

  906. the sermon.

  907. Even in the

  908. midst of

  909. meeting out

  910. justice, he

  911. oozes out

  912. grace, doesn't

  913. he?

  914. Even in the

  915. face of our

  916. greatest rebellion,

  917. he promises

  918. redemption.

  919. Even to the

  920. most guilty

  921. and the most

  922. ashamed, he

  923. brings hope.

  924. Even to those

  925. facing certain

  926. death, he

  927. brings life,

  928. eternal life.

  929. He's so

  930. good.

  931. He's so

  932. gracious.

  933. That's who

  934. he is.

  935. But the

  936. redemption

  937. story gets

  938. even more

  939. beautiful.

  940. Before they're

  941. sent out of

  942. the garden

  943. because of

  944. their sin,

  945. God doesn't

  946. just speak

  947. hope.

  948. He begins

  949. to act to

  950. cover our

  951. guilt and

  952. shame.

  953. I don't

  954. want to

  955. overplay the

  956. sacrifice

  957. imagery here,

  958. but it's

  959. almost certain

  960. that we see

  961. the first

  962. example of

  963. an animal

  964. having to

  965. die so a

  966. person could

  967. be covered.

  968. Look at

  969. verse 21.

  970. The Lord

  971. God made

  972. for Adam

  973. and for

  974. his wife

  975. garments of

  976. skins and

  977. clothed

  978. them.

  979. This probably

  980. means there

  981. was an

  982. animal

  983. sacrificed,

  984. but it

  985. definitely

  986. means that

  987. God

  988. demonstrates

  989. tangibly

  990. that he's

  991. continuing

  992. to care

  993. for Adam

  994. and Eve

  995. even better

  996. than they

  997. could care

  998. for themselves,

  999. right?

  1000. No fig leaves,

  1001. garments of

  1002. skin.

  1003. He hasn't

  1004. abandoned them

  1005. even when

  1006. they've sought

  1007. to abandon

  1008. him.

  1009. He offers

  1010. protection,

  1011. covering for

  1012. their shame

  1013. much better

  1014. than their fig

  1015. leaves.

  1016. This time,

  1017. God himself

  1018. does the

  1019. covering,

  1020. doesn't he?

  1021. God.

  1022. And in that

  1023. sense,

  1024. at least,

  1025. we get a

  1026. taste already

  1027. of the

  1028. redeeming

  1029. grace of

  1030. God that

  1031. we know

  1032. most fully

  1033. in Jesus.

  1034. Covering

  1035. Adam and

  1036. Eve with

  1037. animal skins

  1038. is only the

  1039. beginning of

  1040. what God's

  1041. going to do,

  1042. of his

  1043. care for

  1044. his rebellious

  1045. people.

  1046. In Jesus,

  1047. God provides

  1048. not merely

  1049. a second

  1050. chance for

  1051. failures who

  1052. would blow

  1053. that second

  1054. chance anyway,

  1055. but a second

  1056. Adam,

  1057. one who

  1058. comes and

  1059. who when

  1060. he is

  1061. tempted to

  1062. doubt God's

  1063. word and

  1064. God's good

  1065. character,

  1066. he does

  1067. what?

  1068. He trusts

  1069. his father.

  1070. He obeys

  1071. the father.

  1072. He succeeds

  1073. where Adam

  1074. has failed

  1075. and where

  1076. we have

  1077. failed.

  1078. And yet,

  1079. even though

  1080. he's the

  1081. successful one,

  1082. the one who

  1083. doesn't give

  1084. in to temptation,

  1085. he does

  1086. actually go

  1087. to the

  1088. cross,

  1089. doesn't he?

  1090. He goes

  1091. to the

  1092. cross to

  1093. die where

  1094. we deserve

  1095. to.

  1096. Galatians 3

  1097. actually says

  1098. it this way,

  1099. he redeemed

  1100. us from

  1101. the curse

  1102. of the law

  1103. by becoming

  1104. a curse

  1105. for us.

  1106. For it's

  1107. written,

  1108. cursed is

  1109. everyone who

  1110. is hanged

  1111. on a tree.

  1112. Jesus

  1113. takes the

  1114. curse so

  1115. that we

  1116. receive the

  1117. blessing he

  1118. earned.

  1119. That's why

  1120. we sang in

  1121. that great

  1122. hymn,

  1123. the beginning

  1124. of the

  1125. service.

  1126. He comes

  1127. to make

  1128. his blessings

  1129. flow far

  1130. as the

  1131. curse is

  1132. found.

  1133. Where's the

  1134. curse in

  1135. this story?

  1136. It's on

  1137. creation,

  1138. it's on

  1139. you,

  1140. it's on

  1141. me,

  1142. it's everywhere

  1143. and Jesus

  1144. comes to

  1145. make blessing

  1146. flow

  1147. everywhere.

  1148. That's why

  1149. we rejoice.

  1150. That's why

  1151. we have

  1152. hope.

  1153. For

  1154. failures

  1155. buried

  1156. beneath

  1157. their

  1158. guilt

  1159. and

  1160. their

  1161. shame.

  1162. Jesus

  1163. sacrifices

  1164. himself

  1165. to be

  1166. a

  1167. covering

  1168. for us.

  1169. Hebrews

    Hebrews 10 chapter mention

  1170. chapter 10

  1171. says it

  1172. this way,

  1173. but when

  1174. Christ had

  1175. offered for

  1176. all time

  1177. a single

  1178. sacrifice

  1179. for sins,

  1180. he sat

  1181. down at

  1182. the right

  1183. hand of

  1184. God,

  1185. waiting

  1186. from that

  1187. time until

  1188. his enemies

  1189. should be

  1190. made a

  1191. footstool

  1192. for his

  1193. feet.

  1194. For

  1195. by a

  1196. single

  1197. offering,

  1198. he has

  1199. perfected

  1200. for all

  1201. time those

  1202. who are

  1203. being

  1204. sanctified.

  1205. He

  1206. crushes

  1207. the head

  1208. of the

  1209. serpent,

  1210. defeats

  1211. all his

  1212. and our

  1213. enemies,

  1214. and by

  1215. his one

  1216. sacrifice

  1217. covers us

  1218. safely

  1219. forever.

  1220. Verse 17

  1221. keeps going.

  1222. I will remember

  1223. their sins

  1224. and their

  1225. lawless deeds

  1226. no more.

  1227. Where there

  1228. is forgiveness

  1229. of these,

  1230. there is no

  1231. longer any

  1232. offering for

  1233. sin.

  1234. No more

  1235. sacrifice

  1236. needed for

  1237. your sin.

  1238. It is

  1239. finished.

  1240. His was

  1241. enough.

  1242. No matter

  1243. how shameful

  1244. your failure,

  1245. no matter

  1246. how big

  1247. your sin,

  1248. his death

  1249. covers

  1250. you.

  1251. What's God

  1252. like when

  1253. you fail?

  1254. Can you

  1255. answer that

  1256. a little bit

  1257. better now?

  1258. He pursues

  1259. you to draw

  1260. you out

  1261. of hiding

  1262. into a

  1263. relationship

  1264. with him.

  1265. He promises

  1266. hope at

  1267. your lowest

  1268. and darkest

  1269. moments.

  1270. He takes

  1271. action to

  1272. provide what

  1273. you need.

  1274. He's always

  1275. been that

  1276. way.

  1277. He always

  1278. will be.

  1279. It's who

  1280. he is.

  1281. It's the

  1282. first glimpse

  1283. of his

  1284. redeeming

  1285. nature in

  1286. this story,

  1287. but there

  1288. are many,

  1289. many more

  1290. preparing us

  1291. for the

  1292. ultimate

  1293. redemption

  1294. we find

  1295. in Jesus.

  1296. Yahweh is

  1297. the king

  1298. of creation

  1299. who rules

  1300. justly and

  1301. firmly and

  1302. living your

  1303. own way

  1304. rather than

  1305. his is

  1306. dangerous to

  1307. your soul.

  1308. So take

  1309. heed.

  1310. Don't trust

  1311. yourself.

  1312. And at the

  1313. same time,

  1314. he loves

  1315. to redeem.

  1316. So take

  1317. comfort

  1318. and trust

  1319. him.

  1320. I said I

  1321. learned a lot

  1322. about my

  1323. coach that

  1324. really hot

  1325. August day.

  1326. I did.

  1327. I actually

  1328. came to

  1329. realize I

  1330. could trust

  1331. my coach,

  1332. that he

  1333. really loved

  1334. me.

  1335. Coach would

  1336. eventually say

  1337. encouraging

  1338. things.

  1339. He would

  1340. pray for us

  1341. before every

  1342. game.

  1343. God,

  1344. take care of

  1345. my guys.

  1346. And so he

  1347. would demonstrate

  1348. his love.

  1349. But I knew

  1350. by the end

  1351. of that first

  1352. practice I

  1353. could trust

  1354. him.

  1355. By the end

  1356. of practice

  1357. that day,

  1358. I saw what

  1359. he was like

  1360. having been

  1361. disregarded,

  1362. having been

  1363. disrespected.

  1364. He went

  1365. and walked

  1366. over to that

  1367. hill where

  1368. of course the

  1369. player is now

  1370. crawling up

  1371. the hill.

  1372. And my

  1373. coach, who

  1374. is not a

  1375. small man

  1376. himself,

  1377. got down on

  1378. his hands

  1379. and knees

  1380. beside him

  1381. and started

  1382. crawling up

  1383. the hill.

  1384. Shouting

  1385. encouragement

  1386. to the guy

  1387. next to him.

  1388. Come on,

  1389. you can do

  1390. it.

  1391. You can do

  1392. it.

  1393. Keep

  1394. coming.

  1395. Of course,

  1396. my coach

  1397. beat him

  1398. up the hill

  1399. because it

  1400. was his

  1401. first trip.

  1402. He got

  1403. up to the

  1404. top and

  1405. he turned

  1406. around and

  1407. reached down,

  1408. grabbed the

  1409. guy by the

  1410. arm and

  1411. pulled him

  1412. up to

  1413. stand next

  1414. to him and

  1415. threw his

  1416. arms around

  1417. his big

  1418. sweaty,

  1419. stinky

  1420. self and

  1421. hugged

  1422. him.

  1423. And I

  1424. thought,

  1425. I can

  1426. trust him.

  1427. He does

  1428. love us.

  1429. I don't

  1430. want to

  1431. blow it,

  1432. but he's

  1433. the one I

  1434. want around

  1435. when I

  1436. do.

  1437. Y'all,

  1438. God has

  1439. entered into

  1440. our sin.

  1441. He has

  1442. suffered for

  1443. us and

  1444. given us

  1445. not just a

  1446. hand up

  1447. but an

  1448. eternal

  1449. security,

  1450. a righteous

  1451. standing with

  1452. him,

  1453. a new

  1454. family when

  1455. we deserved

  1456. none of it.

  1457. there's no

  1458. other God

  1459. like him.

  1460. No one

  1461. else meets

  1462. you in

  1463. your failure

  1464. to bring

  1465. you hope

  1466. and redemption.

  1467. Everyone

  1468. and all

  1469. of creation

  1470. needs to

  1471. know about

  1472. a God who

  1473. redeems like

  1474. that.

  1475. Amen?

  1476. Let's pray.

  1477. Father,

  1478. we need to

  1479. know that

  1480. because we

  1481. forget.

  1482. we fail

  1483. and we

  1484. forget that

  1485. you still

  1486. love us

  1487. and that

  1488. you're more

  1489. gracious and

  1490. merciful than

  1491. we believe.

  1492. Thank you for

  1493. giving us a

  1494. reminder of that

  1495. this morning,

  1496. a picture

  1497. of your

  1498. redeeming

  1499. nature,

  1500. how you love

  1501. to rescue us

  1502. in the midst

  1503. of our failure.

  1504. Would you

  1505. so excite us

  1506. by that

  1507. that we

  1508. might long

  1509. for the

  1510. world to

  1511. know

  1512. for everyone

  1513. and every

  1514. part of this

  1515. creation to

  1516. be touched

  1517. by the

  1518. God who

  1519. rules over

  1520. it all

  1521. and who

  1522. redeems

  1523. so gloriously.

  1524. We ask it

  1525. in Jesus'

  1526. name.

  1527. Amen.
