  1. You are listening to a message from Southwood Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama.

  2. Our passion is to experience and express grace. Join us.

  3. If you have a Bible with you, open it to the book of Judges.

  4. How many of you have never—well, let's ask it differently.

  5. Instead of shaming some of you, I'll let some of you boast.

  6. How many of you have read the book of Judges?

  7. How many know who Ehud is?

  8. If you do, you're probably left-handed, which we'll see why.

  9. We're going through a series of sermons over the summer, which we call redemption stories.

  10. But stories in the Old Testament that don't just tell stories, but also point us to the gospel and the grace we see in Jesus.

  11. And this morning, leave it up to me to find an obscure story.

  12. I want us to look at a story that you probably have not heard, but is in many ways funny, but also quite sad.

  13. So follow with me.

  14. We're going to be reading Judges chapter 3, verses 12 through 30.

    Judges 3:12–30

  15. Judges 3, 12 through 30.

  16. Where we have the story of Ehud.

  17. And the people of Israel, again, did what was evil in the sight of the Lord.

  18. And the Lord strengthened Eglon, the king of Moab, against Israel, because they had done what was evil in the sight of the Lord.

  19. He gathered to himself the Ammonites and the Amalekites and went and defeated Israel.

  20. And they took possession of the city of Palms, which is Jericho.

  21. And the people of Israel served Eglon, the king of Moab, 18 years.

  22. Then the people of Israel cried out to the Lord, and the Lord raised up for them a deliverer.

  23. Eglon, the son of Gerah, the Benjaminites, a left-handed man.

  24. The people of Israel sent tribute by him to Eglon, the king of Moab.

  25. And Eglon made for himself a sword with two edges, a cubit in length.

  26. And he bounded on his right thigh under his clothes.

  27. And he presented the tribute to Eglon, king of Moab.

  28. Now, Eglon was a very fat man.

  29. And when Ehud had finished presenting the tribute, he sent away the people who carried the tribute.

  30. But he himself turned back at the idols near Gilgal and said,

  31. I have a secret message for you, O king.

  32. And he commanded, silence.

  33. And all his attendants went out from his presence.

  34. And Ehud came to him as he was sitting alone in his cool roof chamber.

  35. And he had said, I have a message from God for you.

  36. And he arose from his seat.

  37. And Ehud reached with his left hand, took the sword from his right thigh,

  38. and thrust it into his belly.

  39. And the hilt also went in after the blade.

  40. And the fat closed over the blade, for he did not pull the sword out of his belly.

  41. And the dung came out.

  42. Then Ehud went out into the porch and closed the doors of the roof chamber behind him and locked them.

  43. And when he had gone, the servants came.

  44. And when they saw that the doors of the roof chamber were locked,

  45. they thought, surely he is relieving himself in the closet of the cool chamber.

  46. And they waited until they were embarrassed.

  47. But when he still did not open the doors of the roof chamber,

  48. they took the key and opened them.

  49. And there lay their Lord, dead on the floor.

  50. He had escaped while they delayed.

  51. And he passed beyond the idols and escaped to Sierra.

  52. And when he arrived, he sounded the trumpet in the hill country of Ephraim.

  53. Then the people of Israel went down with him from the hill country,

  54. and he was their leader.

  55. And he said to them, follow after me,

  56. for the Lord has given your enemies the Moabites into your hand.

  57. And so they went down after him and seized the fords of the Jordan against the Moabites

  58. and did not allow anyone to pass over.

  59. And they killed at that time about 10,000 of the Moabites,

  60. all strong, able-bodied men, not a man escaped.

  61. So Moab was subdued that day under the hand of Israel,

  62. and the land had rest for 80 years.

  63. You know, the Ehud, I think,

  64. is by far one of the most interesting and fun stories in the book of Judges,

  65. in particular, maybe through the Old Testament.

  66. And it's primarily known because this left-handed guy,

  67. this Benjaminite Southpaw,

  68. overthrows, contrives this brilliant scheme,

  69. and then overthrows with his leadership,

  70. this Moabite domination of Israel.

  71. But at the same time,

  72. it's stories like this that give us difficulty.

  73. Part of it is this story,

  74. if you didn't pick up a little bit,

  75. the English doesn't do justice,

  76. but it's the graphic nature

  77. of the telling of this story.

  78. I'm going to have

  79. a very difficult time

  80. relating to you what is in this text

  81. in a way that will not violate

  82. our Southern polite church sensibilities.

  83. This is a story of every middle school boy's dream.

  84. It's got everything in here.

  85. But maybe the toughest aspect of this

  86. is there are some moral dilemmas here.

  87. Is this what we want?

  88. Is this the kind of leader that we need

  89. who leads by deception and outright murder?

  90. Is this what God calls us to?

  91. And I think because of this,

  92. this story is kind of left off to the side

  93. because we don't know how to process this,

  94. especially today.

  95. But we don't know what to think of it.

  96. Ehud's not one of these leaders

  97. that's put up here for our admiration,

  98. kind of like Gideon is.

  99. Gideon is the poster child of the book of Judges.

  100. But unfortunately, he had his issues too.

  101. So what do we do with this story?

  102. I think I really want to change our approach,

  103. maybe to the whole of the book of Judges,

  104. but particularly to Ehud here.

  105. And I want us to see

  106. three basic things in this story.

  107. One is that we're going to see

  108. some very wonderful things

  109. about the character of God

  110. and his compassion for his people.

  111. we're going to see

  112. the pure idiocy of idolatry.

  113. And then we're going to see some pointers

  114. that point us to a much better Savior to come.

  115. So first, let's look.

  116. Our covenant God's compassion

  117. in the face of ongoing rejection.

  118. You see there in the text,

  119. and the people of Israel again

  120. did what was evil in the sight of their God.

  121. That word again is very prominent.

  122. Because if you read through the book of Judges,

  123. it's a downward progression.

  124. They start with faithfulness

  125. as they enter into the land of Canaan,

  126. led by Joshua.

  127. But then as soon as these leaders die,

  128. things deteriorate spiritually.

  129. And so they do evil.

  130. Then God sends a judge,

  131. a savior,

  132. to take care of them.

  133. The first one was Othniel.

  134. And so he just overpowered.

  135. Overpower.

  136. He came against these overpowering forces

  137. and saved Israel.

  138. And they had rest for 40 years.

  139. Well, at the end of 40 years,

  140. now we see the cycle starting all over.

  141. Othniel dies out.

  142. Those leaders die out.

  143. And again, Israel does evil

  144. in the sight of the Lord.

  145. After 40 years,

  146. you would think that they took that time

  147. to learn their lessons

  148. from their previous enslavement,

  149. but it did not sink in.

  150. And so very quickly,

  151. they revert back

  152. to their idolatries,

  153. their old ways of rejecting Yahweh,

  154. their covenant God,

  155. for the gods of the land around them.

  156. But this time,

  157. God does it differently.

  158. The last time he brought

  159. this overwhelming force

  160. against them

  161. and enslaved them.

  162. This time,

  163. he strengthens

  164. this

  165. sniveling little king.

  166. He empowers him

  167. to bring Israel

  168. into slavery.

  169. Now, it's probably just a regional issue

  170. around the Jordan,

  171. around where Jericho was.

  172. But still,

  173. what God does here

  174. is he strengthens somebody

  175. who really has no power at all

  176. and makes them

  177. unstoppable

  178. and brings his own people

  179. into slavery.

  180. And after 18 years

  181. of this slavery,

  182. after 18 years,

  183. they finally cry out

  184. for help.

  185. And this tells us

  186. two very important things.

  187. Also,

  188. well,

  189. notice before I say that,

  190. we never,

  191. in this whole thing,

  192. see evidence

  193. that Israel repented.

  194. Never.

  195. They cry out.

  196. God.

  197. So,

  198. two things

  199. we need to see

  200. from this.

  201. First,

  202. when God disciplines

  203. his people,

  204. he doesn't do it

  205. just out of anger,

  206. but he does it

  207. with this strong

  208. sense of compassion

  209. for those people.

  210. He does not enjoy

  211. bringing pain.

  212. But in fact,

  213. when they are in pain,

  214. pain that he himself

  215. brings on them,

  216. it's his heart

  217. that breaks first.

  218. If you look back

  219. in chapter 2,

  220. verse 18,

  221. when we see

  222. this overall description,

  223. kind of the

  224. shortened version

  225. of the rest

  226. of the book of Judges,

  227. we have this statement

  228. in verse 18.

  229. Whenever the Lord

  230. raised up a judge

  231. for them,

  232. the Lord was with

  233. the judge

  234. and he saved them

  235. from the hand

  236. of their enemies

  237. all the days

  238. of the judge.

  239. For the Lord

  240. was moved

  241. to pity

  242. by their groaning

  243. because of those

  244. who afflicted

  245. and oppressed them.

  246. This is kind of like

  247. when you have to

  248. give your child

  249. a, well,

  250. should I say spanking?

  251. I'll say it anyway.

  252. If you had to give

  253. your child a spanking

  254. and you want to say

  255. to your child,

  256. this is going to hurt me

  257. a lot more

  258. than it's going to hurt you.

  259. And your child

  260. kind of looks up

  261. at you incredulous.

  262. Is it seriously?

  263. It's my behind

  264. that's going to be sore.

  265. Not yours.

  266. But what they don't

  267. realize is

  268. is that it's

  269. the heart of a parent

  270. for his child

  271. that is breaking

  272. for the child.

  273. And no parent

  274. enjoys in any form

  275. bringing pain

  276. to a child.

  277. And if that's true

  278. of us

  279. who are

  280. evil,

  281. how much more so

  282. is it true

  283. of the covenant God

  284. who now pursues

  285. this rebellious,

  286. rejecting

  287. people?

  288. The second thing is

  289. notice

  290. his salvation

  291. is not

  292. always

  293. or necessarily

  294. precipitated

  295. by repentance.

  296. God brings

  297. salvation

  298. to his people

  299. long before

  300. their hearts

  301. are ready

  302. to turn

  303. back.

  304. Their cry

  305. out to God

  306. is not

  307. oh we're so sorry

  308. for our sin.

  309. Their cry

  310. is from the pain

  311. that they're having

  312. to live with

  313. because of

  314. God's discipline.

  315. That's all

  316. they wanted.

  317. They wanted

  318. relief.

  319. And God

  320. gave it to

  321. them.

  322. Only Israel

  323. it's interesting

  324. in this passage

  325. is said

  326. to have done

  327. evil.

  328. Not Moab

  329. not anybody

  330. else

  331. but Israel.

  332. I think

  333. sometimes

  334. we often

  335. believe

  336. that God

  337. is only

  338. going to

  339. come and

  340. help us.

  341. He's only

  342. going to

  343. come and

  344. get us

  345. take care

  346. of us

  347. and give

  348. us

  349. good

  350. things

  351. when

  352. we

  353. finally

  354. repent.

  355. That we

  356. are

  357. repentant

  358. and we

  359. get our

  360. hearts

  361. right

  362. and that's

  363. when he

  364. comes to

  365. save us.

  366. When I

  367. quit

  368. pursuing

  369. this

  370. addiction

  371. then God's

  372. going to

  373. come and

  374. help me.

  375. He's not

  376. going to

  377. come and

  378. help me

  379. until I

  380. stop.

  381. Until I

  382. can change

  383. my heart

  384. about this

  385. God's not

  386. going to

  387. come.

  388. When I

  389. change it

  390. then that's

  391. when he's

  392. going to

  393. come.

  394. We think

  395. that the

  396. pain that

  397. God brings

  398. us is

  399. corrective.

  400. Well

  401. in some

  402. ways it

  403. is.

  404. And as we

  405. go through

  406. the book

  407. of Judges

  408. you'll see

  409. that more

  410. and more

  411. and more

  412. it becomes

  413. that.

  414. But the

  415. pain also

  416. points

  417. what he

  418. gets

  419. the reason

  420. he gives

  421. us the

  422. pain is

  423. so that

  424. we can

  425. see the

  426. dead

  427. end of

  428. our

  429. idolatries.

  430. The pain

  431. is not

  432. directly

  433. inflicted

  434. on him

  435. it's what

  436. we bring

  437. on

  438. ourselves.

  439. The real

  440. corrective

  441. in this

  442. discipline

  443. is that

  444. this covenant

  445. keeping

  446. God

  447. shows

  448. kindness

  449. to his

  450. people.

  451. when they

  452. are the

  453. most

  454. desperate

  455. and they

  456. can do

  457. nothing.

  458. He just

  459. comes

  460. because

  461. they're

  462. his

  463. people.

  464. We

  465. as his

  466. people

  467. are not

  468. like

  469. animals

  470. that have

  471. to be

  472. punished

  473. to correct

  474. our

  475. behavior.

  476. We are

  477. like

  478. wandering

  479. spouses

  480. houses

  481. that he

  482. is now

  483. in pursuit

  484. of

  485. to win

  486. back

  487. by his

  488. love.

  489. And that's

  490. what he's

  491. doing here.

  492. And they

  493. will come

  494. back

  495. it'll be

  496. very short

  497. lived

  498. but this

  499. is a

  500. picture

  501. of the

  502. heart

  503. of this

  504. covenant

  505. God

  506. that we

  507. serve.

  508. God

  509. is

  510. the

  511. second

  512. thing we

  513. see in

  514. this

  515. passage

  516. again is

  517. just the

  518. total

  519. utter

  520. foolishness

  521. of

  522. idolatry.

  523. In here

  524. I love

  525. reading one

  526. of the

  527. commentators

  528. and I

  529. think he's

  530. really on

  531. target here.

  532. You have

  533. to imagine

  534. a bunch

  535. of Israelis

  536. sitting around

  537. the campfire

  538. telling this

  539. story.

  540. And as

  541. they go

  542. through this

  543. story they

  544. are in

  545. stitches.

  546. This is

  547. hilarious

  548. stuff.

  549. I wish I

  550. could give

  551. you all

  552. of it

  553. that's in

  554. here but I

  555. can't.

  556. But I'll

  557. give you

  558. enough.

  559. You know

  560. this is one

  561. of those

  562. great examples

  563. where if you

  564. see in

  565. Psalm 2

  566. where God

  567. just holds

  568. the nations

  569. as they

  570. rage against

  571. him he

  572. holds them

  573. in derision.

  574. Here's a

  575. good example

  576. of that

  577. derision

  578. that

  579. these

  580. enemies

  581. of God's

  582. people

  583. have.

  584. We begin

  585. with the

  586. statement

  587. the Lord

  588. raised up

  589. for them

  590. a deliverer

  591. Ehud

  592. the son

  593. of Gera

  594. the

  595. Benjaminite

  596. a left

  597. handed

  598. man.

  599. Now

  600. you've got

  601. to know

  602. that in

  603. Middle Eastern

  604. culture

  605. being left

  606. handed

  607. was not

  608. normal.

  609. In fact

  610. it was so

  611. contrary

  612. because the

  613. left hand

  614. is considered

  615. highly

  616. unclean

  617. because of

  618. what was

  619. done with

  620. it.

  621. And so

  622. here the

  623. author is

  624. telling you

  625. there's

  626. something

  627. unusual

  628. about to

  629. happen

  630. with him

  631. being left

  632. handed.

  633. And it's

  634. not just

  635. that he

  636. was left

  637. handed.

  638. Again you

  639. read farther

  640. down through

  641. the book of

  642. Judges you

  643. find out

  644. that in

  645. Benjamin

  646. there was a

  647. group of

  648. soldiers.

  649. There was a

  650. whole group

  651. of them

  652. that were

  653. specifically

  654. trained to

  655. fight with

  656. their left

  657. hands.

  658. Literally the

  659. text says his

  660. right hand was

  661. restricted.

  662. Because

  663. everybody's

  664. fighting with

  665. their right

  666. hand with

  667. their sword

  668. and they

  669. got their

  670. shield but

  671. if you put

  672. somebody now

  673. with a

  674. sword in

  675. their left

  676. hand that's

  677. totally

  678. unexpected and

  679. it gives

  680. them an

  681. advantage.

  682. And so

  683. we're told

  684. here again

  685. pointing to

  686. something

  687. unusual.

  688. Ehud is

  689. left handed.

  690. Important

  691. detail.

  692. So you

  693. know and

  694. at this

  695. point I

  696. have to

  697. say too

  698. there are

  699. more than

  700. one theory

  701. of what

  702. happens in

  703. this story.

  704. I'm going

  705. to give

  706. you what

  707. I think

  708. is the

  709. one that

  710. makes the

  711. most sense.

  712. Okay.

  713. All right

  714. we've met

  715. Ehud.

  716. Now we

  717. need to

  718. meet

  719. Eglon.

  720. Oh the

  721. funny thing

  722. I forgot

  723. Ehud

  724. he's left

  725. handed but

  726. actually what

  727. his name

  728. means son

  729. of my

  730. right hand.

  731. Now we

  732. get Eglon.

  733. Eglon's

  734. name means

  735. little

  736. calf.

  737. It's

  738. also

  739. feminine.

  740. Eglon.

  741. This is

  742. a rotund

  743. effeminate

  744. king

  745. of Moab

  746. who has

  747. made

  748. himself

  749. fat

  750. off of

  751. Israel.

  752. And so

  753. Ehud

  754. makes

  755. he is

  756. going

  757. with

  758. this

  759. group

  760. to

  761. present

  762. the

  763. required

  764. tax

  765. but

  766. actually

  767. the

  768. text

  769. says

  770. it's

  771. more

  772. like

  773. an

  774. offering

  775. with

  776. this

  777. delegation

  778. but

  779. before

  780. he

  781. does

  782. he

  783. makes

  784. himself

  785. a

  786. sword.

  787. This

  788. is

  789. not

  790. a

  791. battle

  792. sword.

  793. This

  794. is

  795. more

  796. like

  797. a

  798. foot

  799. or

  800. 18

  801. inches

  802. long

  803. and

  804. then

  805. he

  806. straps

  807. it

  808. because

  809. he's

  810. left

  811. handed

  812. he

  813. straps

  814. it

  815. on

  816. his

  817. right

  818. thigh.

  819. Now

  820. this

  821. is

  822. important

  823. if

  824. every

  825. soldier

  826. fights

  827. with

  828. his

  829. right

  830. hand

  831. he's

  832. going

  833. to

  834. have

  835. his

  836. sword

  837. on

  838. his

  839. left

  840. thigh

  841. so

  842. when

  843. they

  844. go

  845. in

  846. and

  847. search

  848. these

  849. are

  850. enemies

  851. so

  852. when

  853. they

  854. search

  855. them

  856. for

  857. weapons

  858. they're

  859. more

  860. than

  861. likely

  862. not

  863. even

  864. going

  865. to

  866. think

  867. about

  868. a

  869. sword

  870. being

  871. on

  872. the

  873. right

  874. side.

  875. So

  876. and

  877. more

  878. than

  879. likely

  880. he

  881. straps

  882. this

  883. on

  884. the

  885. inner

  886. thigh

  887. again

  888. so it

  889. would be

  890. totally

  891. undetected.

  892. And now

  893. the story

  894. is framed

  895. between

  896. the idols

  897. these idols

  898. that demarcated

  899. the land

  900. of

  901. that now

  902. Moab

  903. controls

  904. these stone

  905. idols

  906. that were

  907. set up

  908. you see

  909. that they

  910. come in

  911. past

  912. these idols

  913. and after

  914. presenting

  915. their

  916. offering

  917. Ehud

  918. follows

  919. with

  920. the

  921. group

  922. back

  923. to

  924. those

  925. idols

  926. and then

  927. says

  928. goodbye

  929. to them

  930. sends

  931. them

  932. off

  933. but then

  934. returns

  935. and he's

  936. returning

  937. with

  938. a message

  939. or

  940. literally

  941. a thing

  942. for

  943. Eglon

  944. now

  945. again

  946. if you're

  947. sitting

  948. around

  949. the

  950. campfire

  951. you're

  952. hearing

  953. this

  954. story

  955. you know

  956. the thing

  957. that

  958. Eglon

  959. is going

  960. to get

  961. and it's

  962. just

  963. starting

  964. to get

  965. funny

  966. so

  967. Ehud

  968. comes

  969. back

  970. catches

  971. Eglon

  972. sitting

  973. in the

  974. cool

  975. roof

  976. chamber

  977. this is

  978. the

  979. toilet

  980. and the

  981. way they

  982. designed

  983. these

  984. toilets

  985. was

  986. it was

  987. a raised

  988. room

  989. so that

  990. when

  991. the

  992. toilet

  993. was

  994. used

  995. it

  996. could

  997. be

  998. cleaned

  999. out

  1000. below

  1001. important

  1002. detail

  1003. but

  1004. literally

  1005. the text

  1006. says

  1007. when

  1008. Ehud

  1009. comes

  1010. back

  1011. Eglon

  1012. was

  1013. sitting

  1014. on his

  1015. throne

  1016. you

  1017. wondered

  1018. where that

  1019. came

  1020. from

  1021. so now

  1022. the question

  1023. is

  1024. why

  1025. would

  1026. Eglon

  1027. send

  1028. out

  1029. all

  1030. of his

  1031. people

  1032. to be

  1033. alone

  1034. with

  1035. an

  1036. enemy

  1037. in the

  1038. toilet

  1039. this is

  1040. where it

  1041. gets a

  1042. little

  1043. tricky

  1044. Eglon

  1045. we think

  1046. was expecting

  1047. sexual

  1048. favors

  1049. and so

  1050. you know

  1051. which would

  1052. explain why

  1053. he sends

  1054. everybody out

  1055. and so

  1056. forth

  1057. but then

  1058. Ehud

  1059. rephrases

  1060. his statement

  1061. he says

  1062. I have a

  1063. message for

  1064. you

  1065. reaches

  1066. with his

  1067. left hand

  1068. to his

  1069. right thigh

  1070. pulls out

  1071. his little

  1072. sword

  1073. thrusts

  1074. it in

  1075. to his

  1076. belly

  1077. and this

  1078. guy is

  1079. rotund

  1080. he was

  1081. so fat

  1082. the sword

  1083. went all

  1084. the way

  1085. in

  1086. and

  1087. disappeared

  1088. causing

  1089. a reflex

  1090. bowel

  1091. movement

  1092. and

  1093. Eglon

  1094. dies

  1095. in the

  1096. toilet

  1097. in his

  1098. own

  1099. dung

  1100. now

  1101. the

  1102. escape

  1103. well

  1104. Ehud

  1105. locks

  1106. the door

  1107. from the

  1108. inside

  1109. and then

  1110. escapes

  1111. down

  1112. through

  1113. the

  1114. toilet

  1115. into

  1116. the

  1117. room

  1118. below

  1119. where

  1120. they're

  1121. not

  1122. going

  1123. to

  1124. be

  1125. looking

  1126. for

  1127. it

  1128. and

  1129. he's

  1130. able

  1131. to

  1132. clear

  1133. and

  1134. goes

  1135. all

  1136. the

  1137. way

  1138. out

  1139. again

  1140. past

  1141. the

  1142. idols

  1143. that

  1144. supposedly

  1145. had

  1146. given

  1147. control

  1148. of

  1149. Israel

  1150. over

  1151. Israel

  1152. to

  1153. Moab

  1154. but

  1155. were

  1156. now

  1157. powerless

  1158. to

  1159. stop

  1160. one

  1161. little

  1162. Benjaminite

  1163. soldier

  1164. the

  1165. utter

  1166. powerlessness

  1167. of

  1168. idols

  1169. but

  1170. the story

  1171. keeps

  1172. going

  1173. the

  1174. writer

  1175. because

  1176. now

  1177. you've

  1178. got

  1179. Egon

  1180. dead

  1181. Ehud

  1182. has

  1183. escaped

  1184. but

  1185. now

  1186. you've

  1187. got

  1188. these

  1189. buffoons

  1190. of

  1191. soldiers

  1192. that

  1193. are

  1194. Egon's

  1195. and

  1196. they're

  1197. outside

  1198. the

  1199. toilet

  1200. they're

  1201. waiting

  1202. on

  1203. their

  1204. king

  1205. they

  1206. smell

  1207. something

  1208. that

  1209. tells

  1210. them

  1211. this

  1212. is

  1213. not

  1214. the

  1215. time

  1216. to

  1217. go

  1218. in

  1219. but

  1220. they

  1221. keep

  1222. waiting

  1223. and

  1224. waiting

  1225. and

  1226. he

  1227. doesn't

  1228. come

  1229. out

  1230. and

  1231. he

  1232. doesn't

  1233. come

  1234. out

  1235. and

  1236. they

  1237. don't

  1238. know

  1239. what

  1240. to

  1241. do

  1242. if

  1243. we

  1244. go

  1245. in

  1246. there

  1247. and

  1248. we

  1249. embarrass

  1250. him

  1251. it's

  1252. going to

  1253. be

  1254. trouble

  1255. for

  1256. us

  1257. and

  1258. finally

  1259. they

  1260. just

  1261. had

  1262. to

  1263. they

  1264. break

  1265. in

  1266. they

  1267. unlock

  1268. the

  1269. door

  1270. and

  1271. find

  1272. their

  1273. king

  1274. dead

  1275. and

  1276. then

  1277. you

  1278. see

  1279. the

  1280. rest

  1281. of

  1282. the

  1283. story

  1284. if

  1285. Israel

  1286. is

  1287. held

  1288. captive

  1289. by

  1290. this

  1291. bunch

  1292. of

  1293. Moabite

  1294. idiots

  1295. whose

  1296. gods

  1297. are

  1298. totally

  1299. impotent

  1300. to

  1301. save

  1302. their

  1303. people

  1304. who

  1305. are

  1306. the

  1307. real

  1308. fools

  1309. the

  1310. enemies

  1311. of

  1312. God's

  1313. people

  1314. are

  1315. powerful

  1316. for

  1317. one

  1318. reason

  1319. because

  1320. God

  1321. gave

  1322. them

  1323. that

  1324. power

  1325. over

  1326. them

  1327. but

  1328. the

  1329. idea

  1330. that

  1331. these

  1332. it's

  1333. not

  1334. the

  1335. Moabites

  1336. the

  1337. issue

  1338. of

  1339. idolatry

  1340. they

  1341. don't

  1342. know

  1343. any

  1344. different

  1345. but

  1346. Israel

  1347. rejected

  1348. the

  1349. covenant

  1350. God

  1351. for

  1352. these

  1353. other

  1354. idols

  1355. and

  1356. they

  1357. thought

  1358. these

  1359. idols

  1360. would

  1361. be

  1362. enough

  1363. to

  1364. satisfy

  1365. them

  1366. and

  1367. save

  1368. them

  1369. and

  1370. protect

  1371. them

  1372. and

  1373. then

  1374. they

  1375. were

  1376. overrun

  1377. by

  1378. this

  1379. fat

  1380. effeminate

  1381. powerless

  1382. little

  1383. calf

  1384. Isaiah

  1385. 44

  1386. 16

  1387. and

  1388. 17

  1389. says

  1390. this

  1391. very

  1392. starkly

  1393. about

  1394. idolatry

  1395. speaking

  1396. of a

  1397. cedar

  1398. tree

  1399. that a

  1400. man

  1401. cuts

  1402. down

  1403. he

  1404. says

  1405. over

  1406. half

  1407. of it

  1408. he

  1409. eats

  1410. meat

  1411. he

  1412. roasts

  1413. it

  1414. and

  1415. is

  1416. satisfied

  1417. also

  1418. he

  1419. warms

  1420. himself

  1421. and

  1422. says

  1423. aha

  1424. I'm

  1425. warm

  1426. I have

  1427. seen

  1428. the

  1429. fire

  1430. and

  1431. the

  1432. rest

  1433. he

  1434. makes

  1435. into

  1436. a

  1437. god

  1438. his

  1439. idol

  1440. and

  1441. falls

  1442. down

  1443. to

  1444. it

  1445. and

  1446. worships

  1447. it

  1448. he

  1449. prays

  1450. to

  1451. it

  1452. and

  1453. says

  1454. deliver

  1455. me

  1456. for

  1457. you

  1458. are

  1459. my

  1460. god

  1461. how

  1462. foolish

  1463. idolatry

  1464. is

  1465. not only

  1466. the epitome

  1467. of

  1468. evil

  1469. and

  1470. rebellion

  1471. it

  1472. is

  1473. idiocy

  1474. when

  1475. I

  1476. lived

  1477. back

  1478. in

  1479. Atlanta

  1480. there

  1481. was

  1482. a

  1483. radio

  1484. commercial

  1485. that

  1486. I

  1487. heard

  1488. a

  1489. couple

  1490. of

  1491. times

  1492. as

  1493. I

  1494. would

  1495. drive

  1496. around

  1497. town

  1498. when

  1499. you're

  1500. in

  1501. Atlanta

  1502. you

  1503. drive

  1504. around

  1505. town

  1506. a

  1507. lot

  1508. but

  1509. it

  1510. was

  1511. a

  1512. car

  1513. commercial

  1514. for

  1515. some

  1516. luxury

  1517. car

  1518. it

  1519. could

  1520. have

  1521. been

  1522. Audi

  1523. something

  1524. but

  1525. the

  1526. tagline

  1527. of

  1528. commercial

  1529. was

  1530. what

  1531. does

  1532. your

  1533. car

  1534. say

  1535. about

  1536. you

  1537. meaning

  1538. that

  1539. if

  1540. you

  1541. really

  1542. want

  1543. to

  1544. be

  1545. somebody

  1546. you

  1547. need

  1548. one

  1549. of

  1550. their

  1551. cars

  1552. well

  1553. I

  1554. drove

  1555. an

  1556. old

  1557. 20

  1558. year

  1559. old

  1560. almost

  1561. red

  1562. pickup

  1563. truck

  1564. with

  1565. oversized

  1566. tires

  1567. electronics

  1568. that went

  1569. haywire

  1570. it had

  1571. a nice

  1572. brush guard

  1573. on the

  1574. front

  1575. and a

  1576. tree

  1577. shaped

  1578. indentation

  1579. in the

  1580. back

  1581. end

  1582. because

  1583. I forgot

  1584. to put

  1585. the

  1586. brake

  1587. on

  1588. once

  1589. and so

  1590. I'm

  1591. sitting

  1592. in this

  1593. truck

  1594. thinking

  1595. hmm

  1596. what does

  1597. my truck

  1598. say about

  1599. me

  1600. and the

  1601. temptation

  1602. was

  1603. you don't

  1604. want to

  1605. know

  1606. but when I

  1607. think

  1608. the purchase

  1609. of a bunch

  1610. of metal

  1611. and rubber

  1612. and wires

  1613. is going to

  1614. somehow give

  1615. me a sense

  1616. of value

  1617. going to give

  1618. me an

  1619. identity

  1620. maybe if

  1621. I buy

  1622. a house

  1623. in a

  1624. certain

  1625. neighborhood

  1626. maybe if

  1627. I get

  1628. this

  1629. certain

  1630. person

  1631. to put

  1632. their arms

  1633. around me

  1634. in such

  1635. a way

  1636. that's

  1637. going to

  1638. tell me

  1639. I'm

  1640. somebody

  1641. who's

  1642. the fool

  1643. you got

  1644. that right

  1645. when I

  1646. turn from

  1647. the one

  1648. who's

  1649. loved

  1650. me

  1651. who

  1652. continues

  1653. to love

  1654. me

  1655. who

  1656. calls me

  1657. by name

  1658. who

  1659. made me

  1660. his own

  1661. and then

  1662. saves me

  1663. from

  1664. myself

  1665. who

  1666. makes me

  1667. into

  1668. his image

  1669. and promises

  1670. me

  1671. everything

  1672. if I

  1673. turn from

  1674. him to

  1675. a heap

  1676. of metal

  1677. or to

  1678. another

  1679. person

  1680. I am

  1681. the one

  1682. to be

  1683. pitied

  1684. you know

  1685. maybe

  1686. Eglon's

  1687. got the

  1688. excuse

  1689. he just

  1690. doesn't

  1691. know

  1692. any

  1693. better

  1694. but

  1695. we

  1696. do

  1697. we

  1698. do

  1699. but

  1700. there's

  1701. one more

  1702. thing

  1703. in this

  1704. text

  1705. that you

  1706. may

  1707. not

  1708. see

  1709. you know

  1710. at this

  1711. point

  1712. we really

  1713. should be

  1714. asking

  1715. a question

  1716. that we're

  1717. probably

  1718. not

  1719. asking

  1720. what

  1721. do

  1722. and that is

  1723. Eglon

  1724. this

  1725. food

  1726. is put

  1727. to death

  1728. by an

  1729. act

  1730. of God's

  1731. judgment

  1732. the

  1733. methods

  1734. by which

  1735. he was

  1736. murdered

  1737. of course

  1738. are not

  1739. necessarily

  1740. those we

  1741. should

  1742. emulate

  1743. but

  1744. nonetheless

  1745. God

  1746. brings

  1747. about

  1748. his

  1749. fate

  1750. which

  1751. he

  1752. deserves

1753. why not the same thing for Israel

  1754. they deserve it

1755. in fact they deserve it worse

  1756. because they knew better

  1757. Israel was more foolish

  1758. they broke the covenant

  1759. even here

1760. a story where God is very conspicuously absent

  1761. except for that statement

1762. that he would raise up a savior

1763. we find some clues as to why

1764. if you read through here

  1765. this story is full

  1766. of sacrificial language

  1767. egg line

  1768. the fattened calf

1769. ehud's sword is more like a sacrificial knife

1770. rather than a sword for battle

  1771. and this little calf

  1772. was offered

  1773. as a sacrifice

  1774. for the salvation

  1775. of God's people

1776. what they did not recognize was

  1777. in all of this

  1778. that God himself

  1779. provided

  1780. that

  1781. sacrifice

1782. but there's something else here

1783. and this is a picture that Israel did not catch on to

  1784. that sacrifice

  1785. of this king

  1786. pointed to

  1787. another king

  1788. who would come

  1789. he would not be

  1790. a buffoon

  1791. but he would be

  1792. the pure

  1793. the holy

  1794. one

  1795. the king

  1796. over Israel

  1797. where he himself

  1798. would come

  1799. and he

  1800. would be sacrificed

  1801. for the sins

  1802. of his people

  1803. he would die

  1804. the death

  1805. that Israel deserved

  1806. as egg line

  1807. dies this death

  1808. and takes this judgment

  1809. though he deserved it

  1810. this other king

  1811. would not

  1812. he would be

  1813. innocent

  1814. but because

  1815. of the compassion

  1816. and the love

  1817. and the mercy

  1818. and justice

  1819. of God

  1820. he would pay

  1821. for the sins

  1822. of his people

  1823. himself

  1824. and set them

  1825. free

  1826. from their

  1827. idolatry

  1828. this is

  1829. what

  1830. the covenant

  1831. God

  1832. does

  1833. this is what

  1834. he has done

  1835. here in this table

  1836. this table

  1837. is really

  1838. a remembrance

  1839. of

  1840. how that king

  1841. came

  1842. and was

  1843. slaughtered

  1844. justice

  1845. was fulfilled

  1846. but it was

  1847. our sin

  1848. not his

  1849. and so

  1850. he

  1851. came

  1852. offered

  1853. himself

  1854. went under

  1855. the knife

  1856. and was

  1857. the sacrifice

  1858. that was

  1859. sufficient

  1860. to pay

  1861. for all

  1862. of your

  1863. foolishness

  1864. all

  1865. of your

  1866. idolatry

  1867. all of your

  1868. sin

  1869. all of your

  1870. rebellion

  1871. this is the one

  1872. we celebrate

  1873. here

  1874. a much

  1875. much

  1876. better

  1877. sacrifice

  1878. than a

  1879. fat

  1880. moabite

  1881. king

  1882. this king

  1883. would do

  1884. the job

  1885. completely

  1886. let's pray

  1887. before we come

  1888. to the table

  1889. lord jesus

  1890. we

  1891. thank you

  1892. that you

  1893. have come

  1894. that you

  1895. took the

  1896. judgment

  1897. that we

  1898. deserve

  1899. oh

  1900. lord jesus

  1901. we are

  1902. the fools

  1903. we are

  1904. rebellious

  1905. we turn so

  1906. quickly to so

  1907. many other

  1908. things

  1909. to give us

  1910. life

  1911. to give us

  1912. satisfaction

  1913. to give us

  1914. hope

  1915. and

  1916. we turn away

  1917. from the real

  1918. source

  1919. of life

  1920. and hope

  1921. we think we can

  1922. make it with our

  1923. own hands

  1924. we are

  1925. such fools

  1926. but we

  1927. bow now

  1928. and we

  1929. come to this

  1930. table and

  1931. celebrate

  1932. that you

  1933. say fools

  1934. you have

  1935. given yourself

  1936. for the

  1937. greatest of

  1938. fools

  1939. that we

  1940. might again

  1941. know life

  1942. as sons

  1943. so as we

  1944. eat

  1945. as we

  1946. celebrate

  1947. this

  1948. table

  1949. would you

  1950. feed us

  1951. with your

  1952. grace

  1953. in jesus

  1954. name

  1955. amen
