  1. You are listening to a message from Southwood Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama.

  2. Our passion is to experience and express grace. Join us.

  3. Amen. Thank you, guys. Let's pray together.

  4. Father, that's our desire this morning, that we would know your power more,

  5. that we would experience more of who you are.

  6. You are almighty.

  7. And you've come to meet with us.

  8. And that doesn't ever leave anyone unchanged.

  9. And so would you prepare our hearts, continue to till the soil there that it might be hard

  10. or they might not be eager to meet with you or to hear from your word.

  11. Would you help us?

  12. Would you speak to us by your spirit?

  13. Would you give us confidence in your power and love?

  14. And would you give us great joy in living for you, we ask in Jesus' name.

  15. Amen.

  16. Perhaps you're familiar with this famous story.

  17. One nation is aligned on one side.

  18. Another nation lined up on the other side.

  19. And one man stands forth from each side and marches towards the other to battle against each other.

  20. The others stand with bated breath awaiting the outcome as their two champions march toward this decisive showdown.

  21. And within moments it's over.

  22. Dismay for one side is matched by jubilation from the other nation

  23. who has just won a penalty kick shootout to advance in the World Cup.

  24. And some of you thought we were going to talk about David and Goliath today.

  25. In the middle of the World Cup.

  26. Now, I actually do want that picture at the end of a soccer match to be in your mind.

  27. Because this is something we don't have a great image of a lot of times.

  28. You're going to see it countless times in the coming days, that penalty kick shootout.

  29. Because most, we've reached the knockout stage of the World Cup now.

  30. And all these games are going to be 0-0 at the end.

  31. Nobody ever scores.

  32. And then they're going to have to do penalty kicks.

  33. That's just how soccer works every time I watch it.

  34. But that aside, that penalty kick shootout,

  35. it comes down to one player and one goalie against each other

  36. deciding the outcome of after two hours of strenuous work,

  37. the whole match is there, comes down to those two against each other.

  38. Each team sends a representative and stakes its hopes and its future

  39. on the performance of its hero.

  40. That's what a champion, a representative is.

  41. If he wins, the whole team wins.

  42. If he loses, the whole team loses.

  43. And Israel finds itself in 1 Samuel 17,

  44. this encounter of David and Goliath in need of a champion.

  45. After all, here are the two rival countries lined up.

  46. Israel is on one mountain,

  47. and Philistia has lined up on the other.

  48. A valley in between them,

  49. and neither army foolish enough to find itself engaged in an uphill battle,

  50. so they're stuck on these two mountains facing off.

  51. Except that the Philistines have an imposing champion, Goliath.

  52. All nine feet, nine inches of him,

  53. with armor that weighs as much as most young men by itself.

  54. He defies the armies of Israel to send a champion out to fight against him,

  55. winner take all.

  56. Imagine, put yourself in that Israel battle line.

  57. You're one of those soldiers that day,

  58. and you hear him day after day after day coming out.

  59. Goliath challenges you,

  60. somebody come fight me.

  61. And you're trembling with fear.

  62. Not just at the idea of you being the one to have to fight him,

  63. but you're despairing about the future for you and your family.

  64. Staring the reality of death or slavery for the rest of your lives right in the face.

  65. Your theme song as one of those soldiers becomes,

  66. I need a hero.

  67. Just you sing it in Hebrew.

  68. They used different lyrics back then,

  69. but regardless, you're desperate for someone who can face Goliath.

  70. In fact, as Israel stands there on that mountainside around 1050 BC,

  71. they've been singing,

  72. I need a hero for generations.

  73. It's been a long, long time that they've been in this situation.

  74. Ever since mankind's first champion, Adam,

  75. failed as he represented them

  76. in what should have been the faithful pursuit of God's glory

  77. that they were created for,

  78. they've needed a true hero.

  79. Abraham loves God, right?

  80. Maybe he's the one,

  81. but he looks to save his own skin

  82. when the money's on the line.

  83. Moses is a powerful leader,

  84. but he doesn't trust God all the time.

  85. The judges lead them to some helpful victories

  86. as God's people,

  87. but they don't maintain a passion for Yahweh's name very long.

  88. The kings are about to be really unpredictable

  89. as to what direction they're going to lead.

  90. These people are desperate.

  91. They need someone who can stand up against their enemies,

  92. who can lead them in battle to defend the honor of Yahweh

  93. against this pagan who is cursing his name.

  94. Someone who's going to protect them,

  95. God's people lead them in loving God

  96. and living their lives for God.

  97. They're desperate for someone.

  98. Well, in fact, Israel does have a champion, don't they?

  99. You're sitting there in the battle line.

  100. It's not unclear to you who should be taking on Goliath, is it?

  101. After all, just a few years prior to this battle,

  102. the whole country has demanded

  103. that God give them a king like the nations.

  104. Why?

  105. 1 Samuel 8,

  106. the people refused to obey the voice of Samuel.

  107. They said,

  108. no, but there shall be a king over us.

  109. Why?

  110. That we also may be like all the nations,

  111. that our king may judge us

  112. and go out before us and fight our battles.

  113. God give us a king to do this.

  114. And God gave them Saul.

  115. Exactly what they asked for,

  116. a king like the nations.

  117. Chapter 9, verse 2 says,

  118. Saul was a handsome young man.

  119. There was not a man among the people of Israel

  120. more handsome than he.

  121. From his shoulders upward,

  122. he was taller than any of the people.

  123. A head taller.

  124. He's the one

  125. who's the champion, right?

  126. This is the moment you were made for, Saul.

  127. Tall, handsome,

  128. strong to fight Israel's battles.

  129. Your God is being maligned.

  130. Your people are being threatened.

  131. You are their king.

  132. Saul wants no part of it.

  133. Remember how fearful and despairing you were feeling

  134. when Goliath came out?

  135. Unfortunately, Saul too.

  136. 1 Samuel 17, verse 11,

    1 Samuel 17:11

  137. When Saul and all Israel heard these words of the Philistine,

  138. they were dismayed and greatly afraid.

  139. All of you.

  140. Stuck there.

  141. Fearful, afraid, desperate.

  142. But there's this shepherd boy

  143. who shows up with food for his brothers.

  144. Too young, apparently,

  145. to be a part of the standing army of Israel,

  146. but old enough to be sent on an important mission.

  147. And he hears the cursing

  148. and the mocking of the giant Philistine.

  149. And he responds quite differently

  150. from everyone else, doesn't he?

  151. What is it that he hears?

  152. David says,

  153. Who does this guy think he is?

  154. He's big, but he's messing with God.

  155. Despising God's people.

  156. That's not okay.

  157. Verse 26,

  158. Who is this uncircumcised Philistine

  159. that he should defy the armies of the living God?

  160. David has a zeal for God's honor, doesn't he?

  161. The first thing he hears in Goliath's challenge

  162. is dishonor to the name of Yahweh.

  163. And he won't stand for it.

  164. Saul, on the other hand, won't stand up to it.

  165. Saul's zealous for his own safety.

  166. For his own comfort back in his royal tent.

  167. And this contrast between David and Saul

  168. is largely what this whole section of 1 Samuel is about.

  169. This story in particular,

  170. showing what the heart of a true champion of God's people looks like.

  171. In the previous chapter,

  172. when David is anointed to be the next king of Israel,

  173. God has made clear that man looks at what?

  174. The outward appearance

  175. and picks handsome, tall, imposing Saul as leader.

  176. But God looks where?

  177. At the heart.

  178. When he wants a leader for his people,

  179. God is concerned about the heart.

  180. And David shows us what he's looking for there.

  181. A zeal for God's honor

  182. that mankind was created to have burn within us.

  183. We see that zeal all through this story,

  184. but especially when David is talking to Goliath.

  185. Verse 46.

  186. David says,

  187. This day the Lord will deliver you into my hand

  188. and I will strike you down and cut off your head

  189. and I'll give the dead bodies of the host of the Philistines this day

  190. to the birds of the air and the wild beasts of the earth

  191. that all the earth may know

  192. that there's a God in Israel.

  193. And that all this assembly may know

  194. that the Lord saves,

  195. not with sword and spear.

  196. For the battle is the Lord's

  197. and he will give you into our hand.

  198. You hear what David wants to defend?

  199. It's God's honor, isn't it?

  200. It's not his reputation,

  201. but God's reputation.

  202. Not his personal security,

  203. but the safety of God's people.

  204. David wants everyone in Israel

  205. and the nations to know

  206. how great Yahweh is.

  207. That's what drives David.

  208. Of course, we see as that happens

  209. that he trusts God's promises.

  210. Despite this seeming mismatch,

  211. David is confident in God's provision

  212. that he will protect his people.

  213. He tells Saul in verse 36,

  214. Saul's saying,

  215. I don't know,

  216. is this a good idea?

  217. David has said,

  218. your servant has struck down

  219. both lions and bears,

  220. and this uncircumcised Philistine

  221. shall be like one of them,

  222. for he has defied the armies

  223. of the living God.

  224. He's picked the wrong fight.

  225. Not with David,

  226. but with the living God.

  227. The Lord who delivered me

  228. from the paw of the lion

  229. and the paw of the bear

  230. will deliver me

  231. from the hand of this Philistine.

  232. Saul still tries to put his armor

  233. on David, doesn't he?

  234. Here, you might need this.

  235. But David's trust

  236. is not in his weapons,

  237. but in his God.

  238. That leads to a love

  239. for God's people

  240. and that he's willing

  241. to stand in their place

  242. to represent them,

  243. even in danger.

  244. And finally,

  245. a willingness to sacrifice

  246. for God's glory.

  247. David's zeal

  248. for God's honor

  249. means that he will defend

  250. the name of Yahweh

  251. and seek to see his glory,

  252. even if it costs him his life.

  253. And they tell him

  254. it's going to.

  255. Saul says,

  256. you are not able,

  257. David.

  258. This is not going to end well.

  259. And yet,

  260. David goes.

  261. David's trust

  262. is in the Lord.

  263. He's not concerned

  264. with his own strength.

  265. In fact,

  266. he tells Saul

  267. that God is so great

  268. that no man's heart

  269. should fail

  270. because of Goliath.

  271. Come on, Saul.

  272. Here's another chance

  273. for you, right?

  274. Don't let him

  275. make your heart fail.

  276. Here's some encouragement.

  277. Even then,

  278. it doesn't spur Saul's zeal.

  279. It doesn't build Saul's trust.

  280. It doesn't call Saul

  281. to action

  282. on behalf of God's people.

  283. It will, after all,

  284. be the shepherd boy

  285. with a slingshot

  286. and no armor

  287. who will be sent out

  288. from the sideline

  289. against the mighty

  290. Philistine warrior.

  291. David may not look

  292. like a champion.

  293. Looks pretty weak.

  294. But he has the heart

  295. of a champion

  296. that is zealous

  297. for God.

  298. So,

  299. that sets us up

  300. for the climax

  301. of the story

  302. that we all know

  303. and love.

  304. You know what happens.

  305. But even as they start

  306. to fight,

  307. Goliath helps David

  308. make clear

  309. that this is indeed

  310. a battle of champions

  311. but even more,

  312. it's a contest

  313. between gods,

  314. isn't it?

  315. Verse 43,

  316. Am I a dog

  317. that you come to me

  318. with sticks,

  319. he says?

  320. And he cursed David

  321. by his gods.

  322. The Philistines said

  323. to David,

  324. Come to me

  325. and I'll give your flesh

  326. to the birds of the air

  327. and the beasts

  328. of the field.

  329. What he's saying is,

  330. I'm going to expose you

  331. for as utterly weak

  332. and helpless

  333. as you are,

  334. that you're not worth

  335. anybody caring about,

  336. you're going to be killed

  337. and left for the birds.

  338. And your powerless deity

  339. can do nothing

  340. to stop it.

  341. That's what Goliath

  342. says to him.

  343. David responds to it

  344. this way,

  345. verse 45,

  346. You come to me

  347. with a sword

  348. and with a spear

  349. and with a javelin,

  350. but I come to you

  351. in the name

  352. of the Lord of hosts,

  353. the God of the armies

  354. of Israel

  355. whom you have defied.

  356. This day the Lord

  357. will deliver you

  358. into my hand

  359. and I will strike you down

  360. and cut off your head

  361. and I will give

  362. the dead bodies

  363. of the host

  364. of the Philistines

  365. this day

  366. to the birds of the air

  367. and the wild beasts

  368. of the earth

  369. that all the earth

  370. may know

  371. that there is a God

  372. in Israel

  373. and that all this assembly

  374. may know

  375. that the Lord saves

  376. not with sword and spear

  377. for the battle

  378. is the Lord's

  379. and he will give you

  380. into our hand.

  381. You hear what David's

  382. responding to, right?

  383. This is not David

  384. boasting,

  385. Goliath,

  386. I'm about to get you

  387. because I'm faster,

  388. smarter,

  389. stronger than you are.

  390. No.

  391. Don't you love

  392. David's passion in this?

  393. He's almost won

  394. before the battle starts.

  395. You might call it

  396. foolhardiness

  397. or youthful naivete

  398. if his God

  399. wasn't real

  400. and strong.

  401. But David has a faith

  402. in his God

  403. that Saul

  404. and many other

  405. Israelites

  406. seem to lack.

  407. Put yourself

  408. in the battle line

  409. again.

  410. You're watching

  411. and listening now

  412. as they yell

  413. back and forth

  414. to each other.

  415. Maybe David's faith

  416. gives you some faith,

  417. some hope.

  418. Or maybe

  419. you're increasingly

  420. fearful that

  421. there's going to be

  422. an ugly end

  423. soon.

  424. David's

  425. famous statement,

  426. the battle

  427. is the Lord's

  428. makes all the difference,

  429. doesn't it?

  430. Because Yahweh

  431. fights for David,

  432. one smooth stone

  433. and a slingshot

  434. takes down

  435. the great giant

  436. and this battle

  437. of champions

  438. ends as quickly

  439. as it began.

  440. Our kids have been

  441. learning about David

  442. this summer

  443. and our kids

  444. love to sing

  445. and we love to sing

  446. with them about

  447. David and the slingshot

  448. and the giant

  449. and all of this

  450. that happens

  451. but the passage

  452. actually emphasizes

  453. the greatness

  454. of God

  455. more so than

  456. the might of David,

  457. doesn't it?

  458. Look at just the details

  459. as this happens.

  460. Verse 50,

  461. so David prevailed

  462. over the Philistine

  463. with a sling

  464. and a stone

  465. and struck the Philistine

  466. and killed him.

  467. There was no sword

  468. in the hand

  469. of David.

  470. David ran

  471. and stood over

  472. the Philistine

  473. and took his sword

  474. and drew it

  475. out of its sheath

  476. and killed him

  477. and cut off

  478. his head with it.

  479. When the Philistines

  480. saw that their champion

  481. was dead,

  482. they fled.

  483. God is so great

  484. that he uses people

  485. you might not expect

  486. to accomplish

  487. his purposes.

  488. Young shepherd boys,

  489. for example.

  490. Here,

  491. David,

  492. as the representative

  493. of God's people,

  494. conquers their enemy.

  495. Of course,

  496. David is simply

  497. one of the best

  498. in a long,

  499. long list

  500. of imperfect

  501. champions,

  502. isn't he?

  503. Goes all the way

  504. back to Adam.

  505. And David,

  506. we learn,

  507. is very,

  508. very imperfect.

  509. He's an incomplete

  510. foretaste

  511. of the great champion,

  512. Jesus,

  513. who reflects

  514. perfectly

  515. the heart

  516. and the victory

  517. of a champion.

  518. Jesus'

  519. zeal

  520. for God's honor

  521. and pursuit

  522. of his Father's will

  523. is without equal,

  524. right?

  525. He trusts God's promises,

  526. loves God's people,

  527. in fact,

  528. so much

  529. that he actually

  530. willingly sacrifices

  531. his life

  532. in their place.

  533. And in doing so,

  534. even in what appeared

  535. again to be

  536. great weakness,

  537. he achieves

  538. eternal victory

  539. over our

  540. greatest enemies,

  541. sin,

  542. Satan,

  543. and death.

  544. Triumphing over them,

  545. Colossians says,

  546. by his cross.

  547. We stand

  548. desperately

  549. in need

  550. of a champion,

  551. don't we?

  552. Have you ever felt

  553. fearful

  554. in the face

  555. of

  556. death?

  557. Have you felt

  558. too weak

  559. on your own

  560. to battle

  561. against sin

  562. in your life?

  563. Powerless

  564. against the

  565. attacks of Satan

  566. that you can

  567. feel being

  568. waged against you?

  569. Have you ever felt

  570. like you're not

  571. enough on your own?

  572. We all have.

  573. And Jesus

  574. is that champion

  575. that we

  576. desperately need

  577. that David

  578. is merely a picture

  579. of here

  580. in this story.

  581. That's one of the

  582. reasons I've been

  583. encouraging us

  584. to think of ourselves

  585. in this story

  586. as the Israelite

  587. soldiers.

  588. while there are

  589. things we can

  590. learn from David,

  591. Jesus

  592. fills the David

  593. role

  594. in our story

  595. as the hero

  596. and champion,

  597. right?

  598. We are the

  599. followers

  600. of the champion.

  601. What do the

  602. followers

  603. of the champion

  604. do

  605. after he

  606. defeats

  607. their enemy?

  608. Verse 52,

  609. the men

  610. of Israel

  611. and Judah

  612. rose with a

  613. shout.

  614. You know what

  615. this looks like,

  616. right?

  617. Back to the

  618. soccer field.

  619. Here they come,

  620. they rush off

  621. the sidelines,

  622. they are yelling

  623. and shouting,

  624. they douse David

  625. with Gatorade,

  626. they lift him up

  627. onto their shoulders

  628. and carry him

  629. off the field.

  630. I mean,

  631. it was a little

  632. bit different

  633. from that,

  634. but that's the

  635. essence of what's

  636. going on.

  637. They're rejoicing

  638. in him,

  639. they're shouting

  640. in triumph

  641. and relief

  642. and in celebration

  643. of their hero

  644. who has achieved

  645. victory for them.

  646. They realize

  647. the battle is won

  648. before they perform

  649. it all.

  650. They want everyone

  651. to know how great

  652. their champion is,

  653. right?

  654. They're lifting him

  655. up and celebrating

  656. him,

  657. that he's delivered

  658. them in their

  659. great distress,

  660. that he's the one

  661. they're going to

  662. follow.

  663. Is that how you

  664. feel about Jesus?

  665. I mean,

  666. you can leave

  667. out the Gatorade,

  668. but is that how

  669. you feel about Jesus?

  670. Do you act like

  671. someone rescued

  672. by him from

  673. desperate need?

  674. Do you rejoice

  675. in him?

  676. Do you delight

  677. in telling others

  678. about him

  679. and about what

  680. he's done for you?

  681. Keep reading.

  682. They rose with a shout

  683. and pursued the

  684. Philistines as far

  685. as Gath

  686. and the gates

  687. of Ekron,

  688. so the wounded

  689. Philistines fell

  690. on the way

  691. from Sharem

  692. as far as Gath

  693. and Ekron

  694. and the people

  695. of Israel

  696. came back

  697. from chasing

  698. the Philistines

  699. and they plundered

  700. their camp.

  701. This is what I call

  702. living in the victory

  703. of our champion.

  704. Now that David

  705. has defeated

  706. the Philistine champion,

  707. all the Israelite

  708. soldiers

  709. rush forward

  710. and chase

  711. the Philistines

  712. and plunder

  713. their camp.

  714. Victory

  715. is theirs!

  716. They rush

  717. forward

  718. shouting,

  719. rejoicing

  720. in their champion

  721. and the speakers

  722. are now blaring

  723. a different theme song,

  724. no longer

  725. I need a hero

  726. but we are

  727. the champions.

  728. That's what's going,

  729. I think,

  730. as they're rushing

  731. forward

  732. because it's not

  733. merely that they're

  734. celebrating their champion.

  735. They're now living

  736. like champions,

  737. aren't they?

  738. They're acting

  739. like someone

  740. who just won.

  741. See,

  742. they get the privilege

  743. of benefiting

  744. from a victory

  745. achieved

  746. by someone else

  747. on their behalf.

  748. David fought

  749. for them

  750. but now

  751. they get to

  752. act like champions,

  753. defeating their enemies,

  754. plundering their camp.

  755. They are transformed.

  756. They're very different people.

  757. Think about this

  758. for a second.

  759. They start acting

  760. like David.

  761. Just a few minutes ago,

  762. no one in the whole group

  763. would be like David.

  764. David,

  765. their cowardice

  766. now turns into confidence,

  767. doesn't it?

  768. Their fear

  769. turns into joy.

  770. Their inactivity,

  771. embarrassing inactivity

  772. against the enemy

  773. turns into

  774. victorious battling

  775. against the now

  776. defeated enemy.

  777. It's what God

  778. calls us to

  779. as followers

  780. of our champion,

  781. Jesus.

  782. Please hear me clearly.

  783. There is only

  784. one champion,

  785. right?

  786. One true hero.

  787. But in the Bible,

  788. God regularly

  789. calls leaders

  790. to do particularly

  791. what He actually

  792. requires of

  793. all of us.

  794. Followers too.

  795. Those of us

  796. in leadership

  797. ought to be

  798. especially listening

  799. but it's for all of us.

  800. Start by examining

  801. our own hearts.

  802. Are we zealous

  803. for God's honor?

  804. No, I'm actually

  805. asking, really,

  806. what is your passion

  807. in life?

  808. Does your heart

  809. burn

  810. or yawn

  811. when God

  812. is dishonored?

  813. What would your spouse,

  814. your friends,

  815. your kids

  816. say you're

  817. passionate about?

  818. We're all zealous,

  819. passionate for something.

  820. Is it football?

  821. Fashion?

  822. Facebook?

  823. Facebook?

  824. Do you so

  825. trust God's

  826. promises

  827. and love

  828. God's people

  829. that you would be

  830. willing

  831. to sacrifice

  832. anything

  833. to see

  834. His name

  835. glorified?

  836. In other words,

  837. can people

  838. see

  839. your zeal?

  840. I know you say

  841. it's there,

  842. it's in my heart,

  843. I am,

  844. I'm zealous,

  845. I'm passionate

  846. for God,

  847. but it looks

  848. and sounds

  849. like something

  850. when David

  851. wants to make

  852. sure the nations

  853. know there is a

  854. God in Israel,

  855. doesn't it?

  856. Are you committed

  857. to the nations

  858. knowing the

  859. greatness of your

  860. God?

  861. Do you invest

  862. your time,

  863. money,

  864. and energy

  865. to that end?

  866. You don't have

  867. to go to Peru

  868. or somewhere else,

  869. but that's one

  870. place you can.

  871. You know,

  872. we have a great

  873. tendency to do

  874. as Christians

  875. these days.

  876. I think it's

  877. part of our

  878. fearfulness

  879. a part of it

  880. is our

  881. self-protective

  882. love of comfort.

  883. A part of it

  884. is the celebrity

  885. culture that we

  886. live in and are

  887. surrounded by.

  888. What we like to

  889. do is we like

  890. to find

  891. Christian heroes

  892. and delegate

  893. our zeal

  894. for God

  895. to them.

  896. Even pay them

  897. to be zealous

  898. for God

  899. so we can

  900. focus our

  901. passions on

  902. ourselves.

  903. Do you

  904. find that in

  905. your heart

  906. sometimes?

  907. We find an

  908. amazing person

  909. like Billy

  910. Graham.

  911. We delegate

  912. to him

  913. or to

  914. lesser

  915. pastors

  916. the job

  917. of making

  918. sure our

  919. neighbors

  920. are saved

  921. and the

  922. nations hear

  923. the good

  924. news of

  925. Jesus.

  926. We delegate

  927. to Mother

  928. Teresa

  929. or other

  930. lesser

  931. mercy

  932. ministry

  933. leaders

  934. the job

  935. of making

  936. sure the

  937. poor

  938. experience

  939. the love

  940. of God.

  941. And yes

  942. God does

  943. call us

  944. all to

  945. different

  946. places

  947. but he

  948. calls

  949. all of

  950. us

  951. to be

  952. actively

  953. zealous

  954. for his

  955. honor

  956. not just

  957. to share

  958. it with

  959. somebody

  960. else

  961. not just

  962. to pay

  963. someone else

  964. to do

  965. it

  966. but all

  967. of us

  968. to be

  969. driven

  970. by what

  971. drives

  972. David

  973. into battle

  974. against

  975. Goliath

  976. and the

  977. great part

  978. is because

  979. Jesus has

  980. conquered

  981. because his

  982. spirit lives

  983. within each

  984. of us

  985. we really

  986. can live

  987. in his

  988. victory

  989. running

  990. toward

  991. the enemy

  992. joyfully

  993. to plunder

  994. their camp

  995. who's the

  996. enemy that

  997. Jesus has

  998. conquered for

  999. us

  1000. we're not

  1001. chasing with

  1002. swords

  1003. the Philistine

  1004. army

  1005. Jesus has

  1006. conquered

  1007. sin

  1008. and death

  1009. and the

  1010. devil

  1011. this is

  1012. where it

  1013. gets really

  1014. exciting

  1015. y'all

  1016. we get

  1017. to storm

  1018. the gates

  1019. of hell

  1020. knowing that

  1021. they are

  1022. flattened

  1023. already

  1024. by our

  1025. savior

  1026. he's already

  1027. knocked them

  1028. down

  1029. we charge

  1030. against them

  1031. and nothing

  1032. can stand

  1033. we get to

  1034. turn to our

  1035. own hearts

  1036. and find

  1037. sin there

  1038. and begin

  1039. to root it

  1040. out and battle

  1041. against it

  1042. knowing that

  1043. it's not

  1044. stronger than

  1045. we are

  1046. because

  1047. we can turn

  1048. to our king

  1049. we get to

  1050. move into

  1051. this world

  1052. and plunder

  1053. a culture

  1054. of death

  1055. see the work

  1056. of the devil

  1057. in our city

  1058. and in the name

  1059. of the champion

  1060. who has gained

  1061. us victory

  1062. over them

  1063. we march in

  1064. and no greater

  1065. is he who is

  1066. in us

  1067. than he

  1068. who is in

  1069. the world

  1070. we battle

  1071. defeated

  1072. foes

  1073. on all those

  1074. fronts

  1075. what if we

  1076. were altogether

  1077. zealous

  1078. for that

  1079. for the

  1080. victory

  1081. of king

  1082. Jesus

  1083. to be displayed

  1084. in Huntsville

  1085. and for the

  1086. effects of

  1087. sin

  1088. and Satan

  1089. to be driven

  1090. back in our

  1091. city

  1092. and around

  1093. the world

  1094. y'all our

  1095. king promises

  1096. that the gates

  1097. of hell

  1098. will not stand

  1099. against his

  1100. church

  1101. how can we

  1102. stand on the

  1103. sidelines

  1104. wondering if it

  1105. will cost too

  1106. much

  1107. or be worth

  1108. all the effort

  1109. after the

  1110. olympics

  1111. there's a

  1112. tour of

  1113. champions

  1114. you may have

  1115. watched it

  1116. before

  1117. gymnastics

  1118. or figure

  1119. skating

  1120. medalists

  1121. or whatever

  1122. the sport

  1123. is

  1124. will tour

  1125. together

  1126. go around

  1127. and do a

  1128. series of

  1129. exhibitions

  1130. after the

  1131. intense

  1132. competition

  1133. and pressure

  1134. of the

  1135. olympics

  1136. where everything

  1137. was on the

  1138. line

  1139. they now

  1140. relax

  1141. and enjoy

  1142. the tour

  1143. of champions

  1144. have you seen

  1145. that before

  1146. can you imagine

  1147. the boldness

  1148. and the

  1149. freedom

  1150. of those

  1151. exhibitions

  1152. athletes

  1153. no longer

  1154. performing

  1155. before the

  1156. watchful eye

  1157. of the judges

  1158. or the world

  1159. but having

  1160. already earned

  1161. the gold medal

  1162. now just

  1163. having fun

  1164. they might

  1165. even try

  1166. an amazingly

  1167. difficult

  1168. routine

  1169. it's actually

  1170. really fun

  1171. to watch

  1172. because

  1173. the pressure

  1174. is off

  1175. right

  1176. what if

  1177. I fall

  1178. in front

  1179. of the

  1180. crowd

  1181. the scorn

  1182. of the

  1183. crowd

  1184. couldn't

  1185. make any

  1186. difference

  1187. hey

  1188. who are you

  1189. laughing at

  1190. gold medal

  1191. gold medal

  1192. I've already

  1193. I've already

  1194. won

  1195. I can't

  1196. lose this

  1197. you can't

  1198. take it

  1199. away

  1200. do you

  1201. know that

  1202. kind of

  1203. joy

  1204. and freedom

  1205. in your

  1206. life

  1207. is your

  1208. reputation

  1209. in Christ

  1210. so secure

  1211. that you

  1212. can rush

  1213. boldly

  1214. toward an

  1215. enemy

  1216. stronghold

  1217. that really

  1218. might make

  1219. you look

  1220. foolish

  1221. and risk

  1222. your reputation

  1223. what will

  1224. storming the

  1225. gates of hell

  1226. look like

  1227. for you

  1228. where God

  1229. has placed

  1230. you

  1231. for us

  1232. where God

  1233. has placed

  1234. us

  1235. for us

  1236. where God

  1237. has sent

  1238. us

  1239. into the

  1240. world

  1241. if you

  1242. trust

  1243. Jesus

  1244. the

  1245. great

  1246. champion

  1247. then your

  1248. victory

  1249. is won

  1250. and you're

  1251. living in a

  1252. tour of

  1253. champions

  1254. now

  1255. go for

  1256. it

  1257. we were

  1258. created

  1259. to be

  1260. zealous

  1261. not for

  1262. our own

  1263. comfort

  1264. but to be

  1265. zealous

  1266. for the

  1267. honor

  1268. of God

  1269. we were

  1270. redeemed

  1271. by our

  1272. great

  1273. champion

  1274. who

  1275. defeated

  1276. all his

  1277. and our

  1278. enemies

  1279. not to

  1280. live

  1281. self

  1282. protectively

  1283. but to

  1284. live

  1285. self

  1286. sacrificially

  1287. giving all

  1288. that we

  1289. are

  1290. and all

  1291. that we

  1292. have

  1293. to rejoice

  1294. in our

  1295. champion

  1296. and to

  1297. live in

  1298. his

  1299. victory

  1300. let's

  1301. pray

  1302. Jesus

  1303. we

  1304. confess

  1305. to you

  1306. that

  1307. we

  1308. often

  1309. like the

  1310. narrative

  1311. better

  1312. where we

  1313. get to

  1314. be

  1315. the

  1316. strong

  1317. one

  1318. where we

  1319. have

  1320. enough

  1321. where we

  1322. get the

  1323. glory

  1324. but we

  1325. also

  1326. confess

  1327. that we

  1328. are not

  1329. enough

  1330. on our

  1331. own

  1332. that we

  1333. can't

  1334. manage

  1335. that our

  1336. zeal

  1337. wanes

  1338. and we

  1339. are grateful

  1340. that you

  1341. have stood

  1342. in our

  1343. place

  1344. that you

  1345. have

  1346. defeated
