  1. You are listening to a message from Southwood Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama.

  2. Our passion is to experience and express grace.

  3. Join us.

  4. Thank you all.

  5. Beautiful, beautiful reminder of our hope.

  6. We started talking last Sunday about being a biblical community, the things that God's

  7. Word tells us about a church that God would use to storm the gates of hell, to bring revival,

  8. renewal.

  9. And we saw last week that it must begin with our being Christ-centered, focused on Jesus,

  10. His person, His cross, His Word, His body.

  11. That's our first core commitment as a church, committed to being Christ-centered.

  12. It has implications for us.

  13. We're going to talk about those over the next few weeks.

  14. What does it mean when you're Christ-centered?

  15. What else does that look like?

  16. This morning, talking about being a missional community, a community on mission together.

  17. Now, when you think about it, most groups of people have a mission that brings them together

  18. and unites them.

  19. A sense of purpose.

  20. A definition of success that the group kind of unites around.

  21. In fact, you know, as we speak, there are football teams across the country beginning

  22. to practice with national championship aspirations in mind.

  23. All right?

  24. That's where we want to go.

  25. Every player on the team is working toward that goal of standing there in January, holding

  26. the trophy with the confetti coming down around them.

  27. That's what they're working towards.

  28. Many of you work for businesses where being successful means making money, paying off for

  29. shareholders, perhaps other things too.

  30. But the bottom line is the bottom line.

  31. You've got to make money to keep going.

  32. Like my family, many of you are members of a neighborhood pool or a club of some sort or another

  33. where the goal, the purpose of its existence is to provide benefits, services to those who are members of that club.

  34. Right?

  35. That purpose, that's what's going on, why they get together.

  36. And that goal of benefiting those who are a part of a group is so normal to us, whether it's a team or a club or a business.

  37. How can we benefit each other?

  38. That's often the way we approach church too, isn't it?

  39. It's the consumer mentality of how is the church making me feel?

  40. What services does the church provide my family?

  41. How does it reflect on me or contribute to my personal success in life?

  42. Can we admit that those are often the things we think of as the mission of the church?

  43. We might not call it the mission of the church, but we think that's the purpose.

  44. That's why I would want to be a part of the church.

  45. That's what I'm looking for in a church.

  46. Don't we often look at it that way?

  47. No, we're talking about being a community, a group, connecting relationally with each other.

  48. And that's valuable, isn't it?

  49. Having those relationships, but not merely community for community's sake.

  50. That's not the mission of the church of Jesus Christ.

  51. And in fact, the Bible says it's quite the opposite.

  52. Did you know, for instance, that we could keep every single one of our members happy

  53. and still not accomplish the mission of the church?

  54. Did you know that we could meet budget 30 years in a row and fail to achieve the mission

  55. of the church?

  56. Did you know that we could grow numerically, double in size, and look like we're doing

  57. great things and still not achieve the mission God has given to us as His church?

  58. We see the mission of the church all over the place in God's Word.

  59. But I want to read us just a couple verses from 1 Peter as we get started and then we'll

  60. pray.

  61. Peter is writing in chapter 2 of his letter about the church that God is building on the

  62. cornerstone of Jesus.

  63. And in verse 9, he gives us this clear statement of our identity and mission as those following

  64. Jesus.

  65. This is God's holy Word.

  66. But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for His own possession

  67. that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous

  68. light.

  69. Once you were not a people, but now you are God's people.

  70. Once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

  71. Let's pray.

  72. Jesus, would you be with us this morning?

  73. Would you, as we have just prayed in song, would you abide with your church?

  74. Your church everywhere and especially, Father, would you abide here in our presence this morning

  75. with this church for the sake of your kingdom?

  76. God, would you abide with us?

  77. Show us what you would have for us.

  78. Show us Jesus by your Holy Spirit.

  79. We ask in His name.

  80. Amen.

  81. Here's the bottom line this morning.

  82. I'm not going to trick you or hide it from you.

  83. For this aspect of being a biblical community, a church God uses.

  84. Last week we said that the church God uses must remain focused on the person of Jesus.

  85. Now, today, as we are, a church centered on Jesus, what does it look like?

  86. It must be on the mission of God together.

  87. Now, that's very simple, but it's a harder mission than you think.

  88. And it's a more glorious mission than you could even imagine that we are called to and put here for.

  89. So, before we come back to 1 Peter 2 and other passages that tell us about that,

  90. let's remember briefly what God's mission in this world is.

  91. We must be on His mission, not just whatever we want to do.

  92. We must be on His mission together.

  93. And the Bible tells us that God is up to something from the very beginning.

  94. In the very beginning, God creates a world to display His glory,

  95. to give Himself in relationship to people,

  96. and those people then in turn are to reflect His glory over the whole creation.

  97. That's God's mission, His glory being known in relationship and shared everywhere,

  98. filling the earth.

  99. But we messed that up, didn't we?

  100. Looking at ourselves, we didn't reflect His image,

  101. but instead rebelled against Him and wanted to do things our own way.

  102. Brought a curse on the entire creation that was intended to display His great glory.

  103. And so, God sets about, from early in the Bible,

  104. a mission of redeeming and restoring all of His glorious,

  105. now broken, creation.

  106. Especially those broken people that He made in His image.

  107. God is on a restoration mission.

  108. He is making all things new, Revelation 21.

  109. Bringing us back into relationship with Him that we were created for

  110. and renovating all of creation, Romans 8,

  111. so that it reflects His glory perfectly again.

  112. His kingdom coming on earth as He always intended.

  113. And just as God first created people to live in relationship with Him

  114. and then to reflect His glory to the whole creation,

  115. in that same way, God on His restoration mission is up to the same thing.

  116. giving Himself for people in relationship,

  117. to restore that relationship with them,

  118. and then giving them to others

  119. to restore those people in relationship.

  120. Everyone and everything restored to the glory that He intended for it at first.

  121. You can see this pattern in the story of Abraham.

  122. Peter read for us earlier as we confessed.

  123. God says, I will bless you.

  124. We'll have this special relationship

  125. and then you will be a blessing to others, to the nations.

  126. And perhaps the clearest Old Testament image of this

  127. is the entire nation of Israel.

  128. All of them told in Exodus 19

  129. what their mission is as God's people.

  130. Verse 4,

  131. You yourselves have seen what I did to the Egyptians,

  132. how I bore you on eagles' wings and brought you to myself.

  133. Now therefore, if you'll indeed obey my voice and keep my covenant,

  134. you shall be my treasured possession among all peoples.

  135. That's who they are.

  136. They have this special relationship with God, right?

  137. As His treasured possession.

  138. God's brought them into that relationship,

  139. but then they have this glorious mission.

  140. All the earth is mine,

  141. and you shall be to me a kingdom of priests

  142. and a holy nation.

  143. They have a glorious mission to be priests,

  144. to restore relationship with the rest of creation,

  145. to represent God and pass along His glory to everyone around them.

  146. That's what that means.

  147. You don't see it there maybe in that verse,

  148. but that's what priests do.

  149. They stand between God and the people.

  150. In the nation of Israel,

  151. there was one tribe out of the twelve.

  152. They were the priests, right?

  153. They stood between God and the rest of the nation.

  154. Sacrifices,

  155. prayers,

  156. speaking for God to the people.

  157. That was their function.

  158. They represented Him to the rest of the nation.

  159. But then God says here

  160. that the entire nation

  161. will be a kingdom of priests.

  162. It's not Israel alone

  163. that God wants to have relationship with.

  164. Who's He interested in?

  165. The whole earth.

  166. All the earth is mine,

  167. and so I need a group of you to be priests

  168. to represent me to them.

  169. You be priests, Israel.

  170. Passing along the glory of restored relationship.

  171. Restoring every person,

  172. every plant,

  173. every policy that's gone wrong

  174. to the way I intended this world to be.

  175. Israel struggled with that.

  176. But that restoration mission reached its climax,

  177. of course,

  178. in the life,

  179. death,

  180. and resurrection of Jesus,

  181. who restored relationship with God

  182. ultimately through His cross.

  183. He died to see us restored

  184. in our relationship with God.

  185. And He sends His followers,

  186. His people,

  187. out on that glorious mission of restoration,

  188. doesn't He?

  189. 1 Peter 2 is just one great picture of that.

  190. It actually quotes that Exodus 19 passage.

  191. Who are we?

  192. We, like Israel,

  193. have this special relationship with God

  194. because He restored it by His mercy.

  195. That's the cross.

  196. And now we have not only the relationship,

  197. we have this mission as priests

  198. to carry that on with everyone else.

  199. To proclaim His excellencies.

  200. To tell His glory, right?

  201. Everywhere.

  202. That's why we're priests.

  203. We're a special people

  204. in order that something might happen,

  205. that we have a purpose and a mission

  206. proclaiming His excellencies everywhere

  207. so God's mission can be accomplished.

  208. In other places,

  209. the church is called ministers of reconciliation,

  210. ambassadors of the King.

  211. Jesus tells His followers before He ascends,

  212. you will be my witnesses

  213. to the ends of the earth.

  214. And as you go throughout all creation,

  215. what are you going to do?

  216. Make disciples of all nations.

  217. Others who reflect the glory of God

  218. all over His creation.

  219. Do you begin to see why it's not enough for us

  220. as a community just to be about ourselves?

  221. It's not enough, is it?

  222. It's not enough just to exist

  223. for making each other happy

  224. and enjoying life together.

  225. All of these descriptions that I just read

  226. of the church's calling

  227. turn us outward toward the rest of creation.

  228. God's got a glorious mission

  229. that He calls us into.

  230. It's a mission of restoration.

  231. That as we know His glories,

  232. we declare His glories to others.

  233. As we experience His justice,

  234. we share His justice with others.

  235. As we taste the wonder of His grace,

  236. we offer grace to others.

  237. Experience and express grace.

  238. That's our shorthand mission statement here.

  239. God gives Himself in relationship with you

  240. over and over when you don't deserve it.

  241. Experience grace.

  242. And then God sends you to give yourself

  243. in relationship with others

  244. over and over again

  245. when they don't deserve it.

  246. That's what we're called to.

  247. Being Christ-centered

  248. means we must be outward-facing,

  249. priests who represent God to others,

  250. proclaiming His excellencies

  251. so that the earth is filled with His glory.

  252. See, that's why God created you.

  253. It's why God called you into this community.

  254. Did you know you were created

  255. for greatness like that?

  256. For glory?

  257. For being a part of something that's eternal?

  258. That will always matter?

  259. Don't you want that?

  260. It's what He made you for.

  261. It's why He's in relationship with you

  262. and loves you and cares about you.

  263. He has something great and glorious for you.

  264. Bishop William Temple said,

  265. the church is the only society

  266. that exists for the benefit

  267. of those who are not its members.

  268. Dietrich Bonhoeffer said it this way,

  269. the church is the church

  270. only when it exists for others.

  271. The sad thing is that through history,

  272. the story of church history

  273. is one of Christians and churches

  274. forgetting this over and over

  275. and needing to remember it

  276. and come back to it.

  277. They've neglected this mission

  278. that God gives them.

  279. But when a rekindling of love for Christ

  280. has happened in the church,

  281. it inevitably and invariably

  282. involves the church being on this mission

  283. as a result.

  284. If you go back to the early church

  285. and read through the book of Acts,

  286. they go off on this mission

  287. that Jesus has sent them on

  288. with great passion, right?

  289. Sharing the good news of a risen Savior.

  290. Caring for each other in incredible ways

  291. and as one Roman emperor even noticed,

  292. caring for their poor too.

  293. But as you study church history,

  294. time and time again,

  295. that's been forgotten.

  296. What usually happens is something like this.

  297. The church gets some cultural influence.

  298. Having shared some of that good news,

  299. it begins to take root

  300. and they begin to feel comfortable

  301. and see their impact on the society

  302. and that missionary impulse fades.

  303. It doesn't seem nearly as important anymore.

  304. The church settles in

  305. and gets comfortable

  306. pursuing the same goals

  307. and missions as everyone else.

  308. Existing for themselves.

  309. Personal success, wealth, power, comfort, fame

  310. becomes the driving mission

  311. for which individuals

  312. and the church together exists

  313. and with that as the driving mission

  314. of people's lives,

  315. the church is relegated

  316. to spiritualizing birth and death

  317. and maybe some occasional moral guidance

  318. for how I'm supposed to live

  319. while I run the same rat race

  320. everybody else is running.

  321. Church historian Richard Loveless

  322. explains that this was exactly

  323. what Jonathan Edwards found in America

  324. in the early 1700s.

  325. The people in his congregation

  326. were respectable

  327. and had a rote orthodoxy.

  328. Quote,

  329. but their ultimate concerns

  330. were not God and His kingdom

  331. but land and the pursuit of affluence.

  332. Skip that, it's too convicting.

  333. Let's see.

  334. Actually, what he's describing

  335. is an approach to life

  336. that if we're honest,

  337. most of us can identify with

  338. pretty quickly, can't we?

  339. It looks something like this.

  340. An approach to life

  341. where at the center of everything

  342. is myself.

  343. And everything else in my life

  344. works to make me feel

  345. like a successful self.

  346. What I want to be,

  347. this idealized version of myself.

  348. Everything contributes to that

  349. and it revolves around

  350. that idea of me being successful

  351. however I define that.

  352. In Huntsville, Alabama,

  353. you've got to acknowledge

  354. that many people

  355. have spirituality

  356. as a key part of that.

  357. Even Jesus.

  358. It's important

  359. to their overall image

  360. of what a good self is.

  361. You've got to sprinkle

  362. some going to church

  363. and some knowing some phrases

  364. and being with the right kind of people

  365. in order to be who you want to be.

  366. But the biblical picture

  367. is actually quite different.

  368. It's just a small change

  369. but Jesus actually

  370. moves into the center.

  371. His mission,

  372. His glory

  373. is what I'm about

  374. and why I exist

  375. and that defines my identity.

  376. That changes how I spend my time.

  377. Rearranges what relationships

  378. I invest in.

  379. It transforms my purpose

  380. in the workplace.

  381. It's an entirely reoriented life.

  382. When Jesus is the hub

  383. not merely a spoke on the wheel.

  384. It makes all the difference.

  385. It actually drives and changes

  386. all the rest of

  387. what I'm involved in.

  388. And when what we call

  389. the Great Awakening

  390. came to Jonathan Edwards' congregation

  391. the Holy Spirit

  392. used the doctrines of sin

  393. and Jesus' death on the cross

  394. as we talked about last week

  395. to show them

  396. the glory of God

  397. afresh.

  398. They'd lost sight of it.

  399. Here's what he writes.

  400. The gravity of covetousness

  401. which had drawn their hearts

  402. to earthly concerns

  403. was reversed

  404. and merchants began

  405. to neglect their business

  406. to talk about God

  407. and their souls.

  408. The Word of God

  409. suddenly had free course

  410. in congregational worship

  411. since the laity

  412. were now in touch

  413. with the reasons described

  414. in the minister's sermons.

  415. Hymns were now a delight

  416. rather than a habit

  417. and a duty.

  418. The lay people's passivity

  419. and witness

  420. gave way to a new concern

  421. for others.

  422. You hear that?

  423. Their restored relationship

  424. with God

  425. that they'd never really

  426. experienced like this before

  427. created a passion

  428. to spread that restoration

  429. to others around them.

  430. And what happened?

  431. the great awakening

  432. was born.

  433. A great revival

  434. across a whole region

  435. of this country.

  436. Stop and think about that.

  437. That may seem crazy.

  438. You may think

  439. that doesn't happen anymore.

  440. Can you imagine

  441. the impact

  442. when not just one person

  443. but a whole community

  444. of people together

  445. see Jesus move

  446. from a spoke to the hub?

  447. See Jesus move

  448. from being something nice

  449. to sprinkle on the top

  450. to being what drives

  451. everything that I do?

  452. Can you imagine

  453. how it impacts

  454. not just a Sunday morning

  455. worship service

  456. but lots of your neighbors

  457. and the city's business

  458. and schools

  459. and government?

  460. we now see our homes

  461. as mission outposts.

  462. Our money

  463. as mission ammunition.

  464. Our jobs

  465. and our free time

  466. as mission opportunities

  467. for Jesus.

  468. It's all for Jesus.

  469. The Bible says

  470. God has made you

  471. for so much more

  472. than merely seeing

  473. how much money

  474. you can make.

  475. Seeing how many people

  476. you can impress

  477. and get to think

  478. you're great.

  479. Seeing how early

  480. you can retire

  481. and with how many toys.

  482. He's got more

  483. in mind for you

  484. than that.

  485. He's made you

  486. to know

  487. and share

  488. His glory.

  489. And we haven't even

  490. touched what it's like.

  491. We're just getting

  492. to know Him

  493. and more and more

  494. growing in that.

  495. He's got that.

  496. He wants you to continue

  497. growing in that.

  498. His word tells each of us

  499. to offer our bodies

  500. as living sacrifices.

  501. Romans 12.

  502. That whether we eat

  503. or drink

  504. or whatever we do

  505. we should do it all

  506. for the glory of God.

  507. 1 Corinthians 10.

  508. That whatever we do

  509. in word or deed

  510. we should do it

  511. as unto the Lord.

  512. Colossians 3.

  513. And when a community

  514. of people

  515. facing outward

  516. on mission like that

  517. gathers together

  518. it is a force

  519. on God's mission

  520. for God's glory.

  521. glory.

  522. That's

  523. what He's creating

  524. here.

  525. And one of the

  526. greatest challenges

  527. to this

  528. is that

  529. God calls us

  530. to stay

  531. in many of the

  532. same places

  533. while we have

  534. this uncommon mission

  535. that we're pursuing.

  536. He calls us

  537. to very normal

  538. jobs

  539. to engage

  540. with normal

  541. people

  542. to participate

  543. in many normal

  544. activities

  545. activities

  546. and y'all

  547. can we just be honest

  548. it's simply

  549. hard

  550. to engage

  551. in normal life

  552. without normal

  553. goals and motivations

  554. isn't it?

  555. It's really hard

  556. to be a part

  557. of a community

  558. and a culture

  559. where you're doing

  560. everything

  561. that everybody else

  562. is doing

  563. but your goals

  564. and motivations

  565. and the way

  566. you go about it

  567. is different.

  568. That's just not easy.

  569. And yet

  570. it would in a sense

  571. be easier

  572. to find a mountain

  573. somewhere

  574. to go live

  575. on the top

  576. of that mountain

  577. and just think

  578. about Jesus

  579. all day

  580. every day

  581. wouldn't it?

  582. If Jesus

  583. was going to be

  584. at the center

  585. it would be easier

  586. up on a mountaintop

  587. somewhere

  588. and God

  589. has put you

  590. where?

  591. Right here

  592. in Huntsville

  593. and he's called

  594. you actually

  595. to have

  596. Jesus

  597. and his mission

  598. shape every moment

  599. of every day

  600. right where you are.

  601. One of the most

  602. important things

  603. to remember

  604. in that

  605. is that it's

  606. it's a mission

  607. of word

  608. and deed.

  609. Whatever we do

  610. in word

  611. or in deed

  612. those things

  613. must stay

  614. connected to each other.

  615. We proclaim

  616. his excellencies

  617. with our words

  618. and our actions.

  619. Jesus did it

  620. the Bible

  621. teaches it

  622. we say it

  623. in our core

  624. commitments

  625. you can see

  626. there in your bulletin

  627. but what does that mean?

  628. What does it mean

  629. that we're about

  630. God's mission

  631. every time we speak

  632. and act?

  633. Well

  634. think of it

  635. this way

  636. there's a reason

  637. that grocery stores

  638. give you samples

  639. you know

  640. you've had them before

  641. don't act like

  642. you haven't been

  643. to Sam's

  644. or Costco

  645. there's a reason

  646. they do that

  647. it's not just

  648. to keep you there

  649. shopping longer

  650. so you'll spend

  651. more money

  652. why do they do it?

  653. Because they know

  654. that you're more likely

  655. to buy something

  656. that you've tasted

  657. and enjoyed.

  658. One of our favorite

  659. dinners that

  660. Christy makes

  661. our family

  662. is a shrimp pasta

  663. she may never

  664. have tried

  665. making it

  666. but she

  667. sampled it

  668. at the grocery store

  669. one day

  670. and when she

  671. tasted it

  672. and loved it

  673. she turned around

  674. and walked back

  675. to the counter

  676. and did what?

  677. Do you have a recipe

  678. for that?

  679. What did you use

  680. to make this?

  681. Can I have that recipe?

  682. You see the recipe

  683. tells people

  684. how they find

  685. the life

  686. that God intended

  687. for them

  688. but the taste

  689. makes them

  690. long for it.

  691. We are to declare

  692. that true significance

  693. is found

  694. in the glory

  695. of God

  696. that's the recipe

  697. and we are to

  698. demonstrate

  699. the glory

  700. of His kingdom

  701. in how we work

  702. and love

  703. and serve

  704. that's the taste.

  705. Think about it

  706. people don't want

  707. to hear about

  708. a holy God

  709. who's worthy

  710. of everything

  711. from someone

  712. who lives

  713. to please Himself.

  714. People don't want

  715. to hear about

  716. a God of grace

  717. and forgiveness

  718. from someone

  719. who condemns them

  720. and looks down

  721. on them.

  722. People don't want

  723. to hear about

  724. a God

  725. who loves

  726. the poor

  727. and the oppressed

  728. from rich people

  729. who try hard

  730. to avoid them.

  731. It doesn't

  732. match up

  733. does it?

  734. The taste

  735. and the recipe

  736. the word

  737. and the deed

  738. churches that God

  739. has used

  740. in bringing revival

  741. have kept both

  742. aspects of that

  743. restoration mission

  744. together.

  745. That both are

  746. vitally important

  747. word and deed

  748. the recipe

  749. and the sample

  750. you could say

  751. the blueprint

  752. of your new home

  753. that tells you

  754. how to build it

  755. and the model home

  756. in that new neighborhood

  757. that you walk through

  758. and it makes you

  759. long to live there

  760. right?

  761. The church

  762. is to be

  763. that model home

  764. a taste

  765. of heaven

  766. on earth

  767. and that

  768. requires a community

  769. living and loving

  770. together.

  771. That great work

  772. that God is doing

  773. is global

  774. it's happening

  775. all over the place

  776. but he has placed us

  777. right here in Huntsville.

  778. We use this image

  779. as a reminder

  780. of that

  781. that

  782. Southwood S

  783. in the middle of

  784. Huntsville community

  785. for the sake of

  786. the city.

  787. God's put us here

  788. for a reason.

  789. That olive branch

  790. that you see up top

  791. there and you see

  792. in our logo

  793. all over the place

  794. is to be a visual

  795. reminder to us

  796. that we are here

  797. to extend

  798. God's peace

  799. to share

  800. God's restoration

  801. mission.

  802. We're not here

  803. for ourselves.

  804. We're here

  805. to extend

  806. God's grace

  807. with all of creation

  808. and every person

  809. in it.

  810. How can we do that

  811. together here?

  812. Mostly you're going to

  813. get to talk about that

  814. outside of this room

  815. but just to whet

  816. your appetite.

  817. Turn and look out

  818. those windows

  819. for a minute.

  820. Just

  821. you're not going to

  822. say anything unusual

  823. but just so you'll

  824. remember

  825. outside

  826. there's cars

  827. driving by

  828. right now

  829. a bunch of them

  830. just in these

  831. few seconds

  832. lonely neighbor

  833. after lonely neighbor

  834. drives by.

  835. Some of them

  836. have visibly

  837. broken lives.

  838. Some of them

  839. look really

  840. successful

  841. when they drive

  842. by or when you

  843. drive by their

  844. home but

  845. they have broken

  846. hearts.

  847. People in our

  848. city suffer from

  849. generational poverty.

  850. Schools in our

  851. city struggle

  852. with systemic

  853. racial injustice.

  854. Neighbors on

  855. the street you

  856. live on

  857. battle addiction

  858. and depression

  859. and an eternal

  860. sense of

  861. emptiness

  862. even though

  863. life seems to

  864. be going

  865. really well.

  866. And we are

  867. sent.

  868. We who know

  869. what it's like

  870. to battle

  871. addiction

  872. and suffer

  873. depression

  874. and feel

  875. empty.

  876. We who've been

  877. oppressed

  878. and poor

  879. and who've

  880. struggled

  881. and still don't

  882. quite know

  883. how to make

  884. life work

  885. the way we'd

  886. like to.

  887. We are actually

  888. called and sent

  889. on a mission

  890. of restoration

  891. to them.

  892. We have the

  893. good news

  894. of a kingdom

  895. and a king

  896. who will right

  897. every wrong.

  898. Y'all,

  899. God sends us

  900. to this city.

  901. How can we

  902. drive by and

  903. slip behind

  904. our garage doors

  905. when Huntsville

  906. cries out

  907. for restoration?

  908. They don't know

  909. those words

  910. to use.

  911. Many don't know

  912. who it is

  913. they're looking

  914. for but they're

  915. desperate for hope,

  916. for healing,

  917. and you

  918. know

  919. the king.

  920. I know you

  921. can't combat

  922. all this alone.

  923. You can't go out

  924. and fix

  925. Huntsville,

  926. save the city.

  927. That's why God

  928. gives us each other.

  929. It's why we must

  930. lock arms

  931. in community

  932. together

  933. and be on

  934. mission.

  935. You need

  936. brothers and

  937. sisters with a

  938. range of

  939. different gifts

  940. to run a

  941. Jobs for Life

  942. program.

  943. You need

  944. a small

  945. group to

  946. pray with

  947. you through

  948. how to

  949. impact your

  950. neighborhood

  951. and labor

  952. alongside you

  953. for the

  954. kingdom as

  955. you do that.

  956. You need

  957. a connect

  958. community

  959. starting in a

  960. few weeks

  961. to spur

  962. you on to

  963. Christ-centered

  964. missional

  965. living and

  966. equip you with

  967. God's word

  968. to know how

  969. to love your

  970. coworkers.

  971. workers.

  972. We're not

  973. doing these

  974. relational

  975. community

  976. building

  977. things to

  978. play church

  979. or just to

  980. make each

  981. other feel

  982. good for an

  983. hour every

  984. Sunday so we

  985. can go back

  986. to life.

  987. We're diving

  988. in here

  989. together because

  990. we can't

  991. accomplish this

  992. mission alone.

  993. Community is a

  994. catalyst for

  995. this mission.

  996. We need

  997. each other.

  998. Amen?

  999. Amen?

  1000. Amen?

  1001. Amen?

  1002. Amen?

  1003. Amen?

  1004. Amen?

  1005. Amen?

  1006. Amen?

  1007. Amen?

  1008. Amen?

  1009. Amen?

  1010. And the mission

  1011. is so big

  1012. that it must

  1013. drive us

  1014. to our knees

  1015. which is where

  1016. we'll pick up

  1017. the conversation

  1018. next Sunday.

  1019. We need

  1020. our Father's

  1021. help.

  1022. But as we

  1023. reorient our

  1024. lives around

  1025. our Savior

  1026. and His glory

  1027. and His

  1028. mission

  1029. we must be

  1030. on God's

  1031. mission

  1032. together.

  1033. Matter of

  1034. fact,

  1035. Jesus doesn't

  1036. just tell us

  1037. that that's

  1038. what we

  1039. must do.

  1040. He shows

  1041. us that,

  1042. doesn't He?

  1043. He keeps

  1044. word and

  1045. deed perfectly

  1046. connected to

  1047. each other.

  1048. Jesus comes

  1049. and calls

  1050. us to a

  1051. mission of

  1052. giving ourselves

  1053. away and

  1054. He demonstrates

  1055. for us what

  1056. that looks like

  1057. and empowers

  1058. us to give

  1059. our lives

  1060. away by

  1061. giving His

  1062. for us.

  1063. Jesus lays

  1064. down the

  1065. comforts of

  1066. heaven.

  1067. He takes a

  1068. hit to His

  1069. bottom line

  1070. so to speak.

  1071. He operates

  1072. on a schedule

  1073. that wasn't

  1074. His preferred

  1075. schedule for

  1076. us to

  1077. restore our

  1078. relationship

  1079. with our

  1080. Father.

  1081. If your house

  1082. is a mission

  1083. outpost and

  1084. your money is

  1085. mission ammunition,

  1086. if it's all

  1087. about Jesus,

  1088. His body and

  1089. blood is

  1090. mission fuel

  1091. for you as

  1092. you go out

  1093. where He

  1094. sends you.

  1095. He empowers

  1096. us for

  1097. what He

  1098. calls us

  1099. to.

  1100. That's what

  1101. this body

  1102. and blood

  1103. is about.

  1104. That as we

  1105. go out on

  1106. the glorious

  1107. mission of

  1108. restoration,

  1109. He goes

  1110. with us

  1111. and in us

  1112. as we live

  1113. for Him.

  1114. Remember what

  1115. Jesus said to

  1116. His disciples

  1117. the night that

  1118. He was

  1119. betrayed.

  1120. He sat

  1121. with them.

  1122. He took

  1123. bread.

  1124. He broke

  1125. it.

  1126. He gave

  1127. it to them

  1128. as I,

  1129. ministering in

  1130. His name,

  1131. give this

  1132. bread to

  1133. you.

  1134. He said,

  1135. take,

  1136. eat.

  1137. This is

  1138. my body

  1139. broken

  1140. for you.

  1141. Do this

  1142. in remembrance

  1143. of me.

  1144. Remember how

  1145. I've loved

  1146. you.

  1147. And in the

  1148. same manner

  1149. after giving

  1150. thanks He

  1151. took the

  1152. cup saying

  1153. this cup

  1154. is the new

  1155. covenant

  1156. in my

  1157. blood.

  1158. Shed for

  1159. many for

  1160. the forgiveness

  1161. of sins.

  1162. Drink from

  1163. it.

  1164. All of

  1165. you.

  1166. Jesus

  1167. gives us

  1168. Himself.

  1169. And so if

  1170. you've trusted

  1171. Jesus and

  1172. if you've

  1173. connected

  1174. with a

  1175. branch of

  1176. His church,

  1177. it doesn't

  1178. have to be

  1179. this particular

  1180. one.

  1181. This is His

  1182. table,

  1183. not ours.

  1184. Then come

  1185. and celebrate

  1186. together the

  1187. Savior who

  1188. goes with us

  1189. as He calls

  1190. us to join

  1191. Him in His

  1192. mission.

  1193. And if you

  1194. don't know

  1195. Jesus,

  1196. if you haven't

  1197. trusted Him

  1198. yourself,

  1199. I invite you

  1200. too to come

  1201. in just a

  1202. minute as we

  1203. gather around

  1204. these tables.

  1205. You're welcome

  1206. to come

  1207. too,

  1208. to pray with

  1209. us,

  1210. to watch

  1211. and consider

  1212. what Jesus

  1213. has said.

  1214. But I invite

  1215. you not to

  1216. take His

  1217. body and

  1218. blood.

  1219. Don't take

  1220. the bread

  1221. and the juice

  1222. as you come,

  1223. but rather

  1224. consider what

  1225. Jesus has

  1226. offered you.

  1227. Consider the

  1228. mission that

  1229. He says,

  1230. this is what

  1231. you were

  1232. created for

  1233. and how

  1234. significant you

  1235. are.

  1236. And you

  1237. have to

  1238. have me

  1239. to be

  1240. restored to

  1241. what God

  1242. intended for

  1243. you.

  1244. Consider that.

  1245. We'd love to

  1246. talk with you

  1247. and pray with

  1248. you about

  1249. that.

  1250. Let me pray

  1251. and then we'll

  1252. come to this

  1253. table together.

  1254. Jesus, thank

  1255. You for not

  1256. leaving us

  1257. alone to do

  1258. something too

  1259. big for us.

  1260. Thank You for

  1261. giving Yourself

  1262. for us and

  1263. for empowering

  1264. us for what

  1265. You have

  1266. called us

  1267. to.

  1268. Would You

  1269. set aside

  1270. these very

  1271. common elements

  1272. to a special

  1273. purpose in our

  1274. hearts that

  1275. we would be
