  1. You are listening to a message from Southwood Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama.

  2. Our passion is to experience and express grace.

  3. Join us.

  4. We're thinking this morning as we've already begun celebrating God's love about relationships

  5. in the family of God.

  6. And as we get started this morning, I want us to look briefly at a passage in Ephesians

  7. 3 that orients this topic in the broader conversation that we've been having about our core commitments,

  8. about being a church that God would use to bring revival and renewal.

  9. See, it's really easy to think that relationships within the church are about this inwardly focused,

  10. self-serving idea, but they're actually at the heart of the others-focused, outwardly focused

  11. mission that God has called us to.

  12. We see that in Ephesians where Paul's writing to a church and he's telling its members about

  13. God's grace that has come and rescued each of them.

  14. That's where it starts.

  15. But very quickly he moves to say God's grace hasn't just come to each of you individually,

  16. but to a whole community of you.

  17. That actually Jesus in the cross has rescued Jew and Gentile and brought them into one family.

  18. That's chapter 2.

  19. It's the work of Christ on the cross, the bond of His love that unites.

  20. And that group that's united, he then says this is where the remarkable power of God is at work,

  21. to do things that they couldn't even imagine doing.

  22. He says the way you plug in to that power that He's going to show through you is through knowing

  23. more and more of His love.

  24. This is what we've been saying the last three weeks, that the church must be focused on Jesus.

  25. That when we are, God promises to do amazing things, to build His kingdom, to storm the gates of hell through us.

  26. And that of course we are utterly dependent upon Him, His power that is going to be working if that's going to happen.

  27. So as we figure out what does it look like together to depend on Him today,

  28. one little phrase in the midst of this conversation in Ephesians,

  29. says the necessity of vital relationships within the church.

  30. This love of God is what we must grasp more and more for His power to flow through us.

  31. And it is experienced, this one phrase says,

  32. together with all the saints.

  33. In other words, what Paul's saying in one sentence,

  34. a church prayerfully dependent on God for its Christ-centered mission must lock arms in meaningful relationships.

  35. Locking arms with each other to move outward.

  36. Listen to this glorious passage in that light.

  37. Ephesians 3 verse 17, this is God's holy word.

    Ephesians 3:17

  38. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love,

  39. may have power together with all the saints

  40. to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ.

  41. To know this love that surpasses knowledge,

  42. that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.

  43. Now to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine,

  44. according to His power that is at work within us,

  45. to Him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus,

  46. throughout all generations, forever and ever.

  47. Amen.

  48. Let's pray together.

  49. Father, all glory is Yours.

  50. May there be glory to You in this place,

  51. in this community,

  52. as we know and love and reflect our Savior more.

  53. May they know You because they see Your love in us.

  54. Through that we ask for the glory of Jesus.

  55. Amen.

  56. It's been a long time since I agreed to participate in a three-legged race.

  57. You may have been in one before.

  58. If you're at all like me, it's fraught with danger.

  59. If you're like me, a person who is very competitive

  60. and who believes that everything should be done at full speed,

  61. all the time, no matter what, three-legged race is.

  62. It's not where you should start.

  63. The idea, of course, is to move in sync with your partner

  64. across the finish line, right?

  65. Seems fairly simple.

  66. The catch, of course, is that you each have a leg tied together.

  67. If you've never been to a field day before,

  68. you know how disastrous these can be.

  69. And if you haven't seen it, let me tell you the secret.

  70. The key is that bond that is connecting the two legs.

  71. It has to be tied really tightly to keep you together.

  72. Working with your teammate to move at the same pace,

  73. to support each other,

  74. to cross the finish line and win the race together.

  75. If that bond gets loose or you try to win the race alone,

  76. no matter how good an athlete you are,

  77. it will get ugly very fast.

  78. This is usually the way it ends,

  79. and the finish line is far in the distance.

  80. It's simply not a race that you can win on your own.

  81. We've said that the same is true

  82. for the mission God has called us to

  83. as His people in this world.

  84. We're designed to lean on each other.

  85. It's together with all the saints

  86. that our vision of God's love grows.

  87. We say that, but we love to try on our own, don't we?

  88. And we often end up face down in the grass.

  89. We've bought into the lie

  90. that me and Jesus is enough, really.

  91. That surface relationships and social media connections

  92. is really deep community and all that I'll ever need.

  93. That having a busy schedule where I see lots of people,

  94. that that qualifies as true community.

  95. That's one I believe a lot.

  96. We like the perceived safety of anonymity, don't we?

  97. We fear being exposed if we move out of our isolation

  98. and we're truly known by someone.

  99. We've been hiding behind fig leaves

  100. since the very first sin in the garden, haven't we?

  101. We all do it differently,

  102. but do you feel that reality in your life?

  103. That you have that tendency to do that?

  104. Let me ask you a couple of questions.

  105. Is there anyone at all

  106. with whom you have shared your secret sin struggle?

  107. Who has a hunting license in your heart and life

  108. to ask you hard questions?

  109. Do you ever feel like no one at church

  110. or maybe no one at all truly understands you?

  111. Have you had friends from church get divorced

  112. and you didn't even have any idea

  113. they were struggling or having any trouble at all?

  114. When was the last time you redirected plans you had made

  115. based on input from a brother or sister?

  116. See, all too often we try to run on our own, don't we?

  117. We think, I got this.

  118. I can win this race.

  119. I'm strong.

  120. I'm fast.

  121. Plus, it's risky to involve anybody else.

  122. All too often the church is sprawled

  123. face down across the grass

  124. with legs loosely dangling from each other

  125. rather than running in sync

  126. towards our neighbors bound tightly together.

  127. No one has ever won a three-legged race

  128. or brought revival on his own.

  129. The bond for our three-legged race, if you will,

  130. is Jesus.

  131. He unites us to each other

  132. in a way that must produce

  133. radically different relationships

  134. from what most of us are used to.

  135. What kind of relationships develop

  136. in a Christ-centered community?

  137. One where his influence is primary,

  138. where his word directs our relationships.

  139. What's different when the bond of Jesus unites us?

  140. Well, first, and there are a lot of these.

  141. I'm just looking at a couple this morning.

  142. We value people not because of what they offer us,

  143. but because of who they are.

  144. Relationships in this world often form

  145. because someone helps us.

  146. We invest further in the relationship

  147. because they offer us laughter

  148. or support or advancement

  149. in some sort of way, right?

  150. You do this all the time.

  151. They help the team succeed.

  152. It makes me look good or feel good

  153. to be with them.

  154. Value comes from something you do.

  155. In God's family, it must be different.

  156. We value people, period.

  157. They are not a means to an end.

  158. We don't see them merely as tools.

  159. People are valuable in themselves

  160. as created in the image of God,

  161. a relational God within the Trinity

  162. who creates us to reflect that image

  163. in relationship with each other.

  164. And then people are valuable and significant

  165. as children of God.

  166. In his family, the bond of Jesus unites us,

  167. whether you improve my social status,

  168. whether you help me get the project done,

  169. whether you have money to contribute or not.

  170. All the saints, valuable in one body,

  171. one family.

  172. We say in our core commitments,

  173. we genuinely love people

  174. and are committed to developing

  175. life-giving relationships.

  176. These relationships where people are valued

  177. for themselves.

  178. It means that we genuinely listen to each other,

  179. that we sincerely seek to understand

  180. each other's perspective.

  181. We even share of ourselves

  182. and of our lives with each other.

  183. Listen, we've all been in relationships

  184. where we know we're not valuable

  185. to the other person, right?

  186. They didn't really care about what I said.

  187. They never shared vulnerably with me.

  188. They just got what they needed from me

  189. and moved on.

  190. What I had to offer was valuable.

  191. I was not.

  192. They and I stayed safely hidden.

  193. We didn't have to know each other

  194. to get what we needed, perhaps,

  195. from each other.

  196. Jesus creates a different kind of relationship.

  197. Secondly, the bond of Jesus

  198. produces relationships

  199. where sins are regularly confessed

  200. and forgiven.

  201. Listen to James chapter 5.

    James 5 chapter mention

  202. Therefore, confess your sins to one another

  203. and pray for one another

  204. that you may be healed.

  205. This is to be normative in Jesus' church.

  206. It's the way we're to relate regularly.

  207. When was the last time you sat down

  208. with someone outside your family

  209. and confessed specific sin?

  210. It seems a little scary,

  211. like something really bad

  212. must have happened, right?

  213. God's word says this is normal.

  214. This is how we relate to each other.

  215. It's a pretty tight bond, isn't it,

  216. that Jesus creates.

  217. See, because our value

  218. comes not from our performance,

  219. but from being in His family,

  220. we're freed to be honest

  221. with each other.

  222. See, because that's true of all of us,

  223. because I'm never the only sinner

  224. in the conversation,

  225. because we all are sinners

  226. saved by grace,

  227. I never open up and confess a sin

  228. to an innocent party

  229. who can look down on me

  230. and condemn me.

  231. I'm always confessing

  232. to a fellow sinner

  233. who has forgiveness in Jesus

  234. to extend to me.

  235. We share our sins

  236. and pray for each other,

  237. and there's healing

  238. in that kind of prayer,

  239. that kind of relationship,

  240. James says.

  241. There is, isn't there?

  242. Have you experienced that?

  243. Healing in my relationship with God

  244. and healing in my relationship

  245. with my brother or sister

  246. because we look to Jesus together.

  247. Our experience of that bond

  248. grows stronger,

  249. and we're pulled together

  250. to run the race better.

  251. Dietrich Bonhoeffer writes

  252. in his classic book

  253. on Christian community,

  254. Life Together,

  255. in confession,

  256. the breakthrough to community

  257. takes place.

  258. Sin demands to have a man

  259. by himself.

  260. It withdraws him

  261. from the community.

  262. Sin wants to remain unknown.

  263. Hiding, right?

  264. That's why we don't share

  265. and confess much.

  266. Sin pulls us away

  267. and wants us to keep it

  268. to ourselves,

  269. and Bonhoeffer says

  270. there's danger there

  271. in being pulled away

  272. into isolation

  273. with our sin,

  274. but the gospel of Jesus Christ

  275. breaks in

  276. and allows confession

  277. that brings the sinner

  278. back to the fellowship

  279. of sinners saved by grace.

  280. Bonhoeffer concludes this,

  281. beautiful.

  282. If a Christian is in the fellowship

  283. of confession

  284. with a brother,

  285. he will never be alone again

  286. anywhere.

  287. Yes.

  288. Yes, as we confess

  289. and we forgive each other.

  290. And listen,

  291. to us natural hiders,

  292. that sounds a bit scary,

  293. doesn't it?

  294. I know it can

  295. to think about

  296. stepping out there

  297. and being exposed.

  298. It's not really worth the risk.

  299. Why would I bother?

  300. But God is telling us

  301. in His Word,

  302. this is the kind of relationship

  303. I've created you for.

  304. To know this

  305. and to enjoy this.

  306. I've sent my son

  307. so that you can have

  308. the safety,

  309. the ability

  310. to have this kind of

  311. honest relationship

  312. where people know

  313. and they forgive

  314. and love,

  315. and they love the real you.

  316. the sinful version,

  317. not merely the Facebook version

  318. of you

  319. that some of them like,

  320. but they know and love

  321. and forgive the real you.

  322. One more unique thing

  323. about relationships

  324. through the bond of Jesus.

  325. We delight

  326. to carry each other's burdens.

  327. In the world,

  328. relationships are typically

  329. you scratch my back,

  330. I'll scratch yours, right?

  331. Community does come.

  332. It comes when you invest

  333. in others.

  334. You give to them.

  335. You serve them.

  336. And when you need help,

  337. they'll give back to you.

  338. They'll be there for you.

  339. They'll carry your burdens.

  340. I remember watching this

  341. unfold at our school

  342. a few years ago

  343. when one family

  344. who seemed to lovingly

  345. and tirelessly

  346. serve everybody

  347. in every situation

  348. had a child

  349. that had surgery.

  350. And all of a sudden,

  351. out of the woodwork,

  352. everybody came out

  353. because they'd been served

  354. by this family

  355. so many times.

  356. They thought,

  357. how can we support you?

  358. How can we help?

  359. We're all in.

  360. And that's beautiful

  361. and wonderful

  362. and good in community

  363. that you respond

  364. to help someone

  365. who has helped you.

  366. Y'all,

  367. biblical community

  368. goes far beyond that

  369. and is so much more glorious.

  370. It says something

  371. a little different.

  372. Jesus has carried

  373. all my burdens,

  374. poured himself out

  375. for me

  376. to overflowing,

  377. served me so consistently

  378. that I am delighted

  379. to do the same

  380. for all of you,

  381. whether you've personally

  382. poured into me

  383. or not,

  384. for all of you,

  385. and especially if Jesus

  386. has brought you

  387. into his family too,

  388. right?

  389. Say,

  390. come on, preacher.

  391. That's what it's like.

  392. That's what Jesus does,

  393. doesn't he?

  394. He pours himself into us

  395. so that it will overflow

  396. from us to others,

  397. not so that we'll see

  398. who we owe lately.

  399. That's community

  400. created by God's word

  401. and his spirit.

  402. Doesn't your spirit resonate

  403. with that truth,

  404. with that reality?

  405. It's not because

  406. it's my words,

  407. it's God's word.

  408. It's right there

  409. in James 5,

  410. the passage we looked

  411. at earlier.

  412. You're suffering,

  413. you're sick,

  414. you're struggling

  415. with sin,

  416. share those things,

  417. pray together,

  418. mourn with those

  419. who mourn,

  420. rejoice with those

  421. who rejoice.

  422. Galatians 6,

  423. 2,

  424. carry one another's

  425. burdens

  426. and so fulfill

  427. the law of Christ.

  428. This passage

  429. in Galatians

  430. is in the context

  431. of our sin,

  432. burdens of sin,

  433. spiritual burdens.

  434. In Acts chapter 2,

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  435. the picture

  436. of the early church

  437. that we read

  438. last week

  439. says they were

  440. committed

  441. to the fellowship

  442. among other things.

  443. Carrying each other's

  444. physical burdens,

  445. sharing all they had

  446. to care for each other's

  447. physical needs,

  448. right?

  449. I love how this

  450. church family

  451. here at Southwood

  452. does this.

  453. We've experienced that.

  454. We as a church

  455. are not perfect.

  456. We want to keep

  457. growing here

  458. in this area.

  459. But brothers and sisters

  460. helping others

  461. walk through

  462. healing from an affair.

  463. Crying and supporting

  464. each other

  465. through the loss

  466. of a loved one.

  467. Just this week

  468. showing up

  469. to help someone

  470. recover from a car accident.

  471. And that church member

  472. that was in the accident

  473. this week

  474. said of the love

  475. that she'd received

  476. not just in that moment

  477. but over the previous months,

  478. I don't know

  479. how I could ever

  480. repay all of them.

  481. You don't.

  482. We're family.

  483. That's what being

  484. a community

  485. of grace

  486. means.

  487. You don't

  488. repay anybody.

  489. You just look

  490. for the next person

  491. who's got a burden

  492. that you can help carry

  493. because Jesus

  494. has already

  495. carried yours,

  496. right?

  497. Y'all,

  498. this is the kind

  499. of community

  500. God is making us

  501. if we will but

  502. lean into Him,

  503. trust Him,

  504. let His love

  505. overwhelm us together

  506. so that it overflows

  507. from us.

  508. See,

  509. Ephesians told us

  510. it was all about

  511. experiencing God's love,

  512. right?

  513. That's where

  514. the power was from.

  515. It told us

  516. we needed

  517. all the saints

  518. to grasp

  519. the height

  520. and width

  521. and breadth

  522. and depth

  523. of God's love.

  524. All the saints.

  525. It's a pretty

  526. broad term.

  527. Involves a lot

  528. of people,

  529. some of whom

  530. you've probably

  531. never met.

  532. With whom

  533. does the bond

  534. of Jesus

  535. put us

  536. in relationship?

  537. We're going to

  538. talk about this

  539. more in our last

  540. core commitment

  541. where we see

  542. particularly

  543. the beauty

  544. and the priority

  545. of loving

  546. the least,

  547. the lost,

  548. the littlest,

  549. the lonely,

  550. and the left out,

  551. even beyond

  552. God's family.

  553. But for today,

  554. let's stop at

  555. what all

  556. the saints

  557. means.

  558. It means

  559. at least this.

  560. I need

  561. way more

  562. than those

  563. like me

  564. and those

  565. I like.

  566. Way more

  567. than those

  568. like me

  569. and those

  570. I like.

  571. this is

  572. where the

  573. power of

  574. the gospel,

  575. the beauty

  576. of Christ-centered

  577. community

  578. really becomes

  579. evident

  580. because Jesus

  581. bonds together

  582. people who are

  583. otherwise

  584. different.

  585. Remember,

  586. he makes

  587. enemies

  588. family

  589. who love

  590. each other

  591. for Christ's

  592. sake,

  593. even if there's

  594. no other

  595. reason.

  596. We don't

  597. gather out of

  598. mutual admiration

  599. we like

  600. each other,

  601. but out of

  602. shared admiration

  603. we love

  604. God

  605. because he

  606. has loved

  607. us.

  608. See,

  609. apart from

  610. Christ,

  611. the power

  612. of self-pursuit

  613. and my own

  614. preferences,

  615. it puts me

  616. in relationship

  617. with people

  618. who are like

  619. me.

  620. It puts me

  621. in community

  622. with others

  623. that I

  624. naturally

  625. and easily

  626. click with,

  627. who root

  628. for the same

  629. football team,

  630. who vote

  631. for the same

  632. party,

  633. who like

  634. the same

  635. worship style.

  636. Listen,

  637. Jesus doesn't

  638. need to be

  639. around for

  640. you to

  641. connect with

  642. people like

  643. that,

  644. right?

  645. That's how

  646. you naturally

  647. function,

  648. pursuing what's

  649. comfortable for

  650. you.

  651. But Jesus

  652. puts me in

  653. different

  654. relationships.

  655. He puts me

  656. in relationship

  657. where our

  658. differences,

  659. which are

  660. usually divisive

  661. in other

  662. arenas in

  663. life and

  664. keep us

  665. apart,

  666. are actually

  667. desirable

  668. people because

  669. they show

  670. us what?

  671. Greater

  672. dimensions

  673. of God's

  674. love.

  675. Remember,

  676. that's what

  677. we need

  678. all the

  679. saints for,

  680. right?

  681. Grasping a

  682. greater vision

  683. of God's

  684. love.

  685. Think with me

  686. for just a

  687. minute how

  688. people different

  689. from you

  690. enlarge and

  691. expand your

  692. view of

  693. God's love

  694. as you live

  695. in relationship

  696. with them,

  697. valuing them

  698. personally,

  699. confessing and

  700. forgiving sins,

  701. carrying each

  702. other's burden.

  703. We could go

  704. on all day,

  705. but think just

  706. a few examples.

  707. When you share

  708. life with a

  709. materially poor

  710. brother or

  711. sister and you

  712. listen to them

  713. well, you might

  714. get a glimpse of

  715. depending on God

  716. to provide one

  717. meal at a

  718. time.

  719. Like God

  720. thought was so

  721. important to

  722. teach his Old

  723. Testament people,

  724. his daily

  725. love may become

  726. sweeter to you.

  727. love.

  728. When you engage

  729. in relationship

  730. with a married

  731. couple, you may

  732. see a broken

  733. but beautiful

  734. picture of the

  735. love of God

  736. and people

  737. bearing with

  738. one another

  739. through deep

  740. sin and

  741. offense.

  742. Forgiving as

  743. God has

  744. forgiven them

  745. and his

  746. persistent love

  747. may become

  748. more glorious

  749. in your eyes.

  750. But when those

  751. of us who are

  752. married engage

  753. in relationship

  754. with an

  755. unmarried

  756. brother or

  757. sister, you

  758. may realize

  759. afresh the

  760. reality that

  761. God's love

  762. is so great

  763. it provides

  764. fulfillment and

  765. identity apart

  766. from my family

  767. or my sexuality.

  768. You might learn

  769. the joy of

  770. singleness that

  771. such brothers as

  772. Jesus and

  773. Paul knew.

  774. And God's

  775. love may become

  776. more satisfying

  777. to your heart

  778. than you realized

  779. it could be.

  780. I wish you

  781. all would have

  782. the privilege

  783. I have to

  784. know former

  785. prostitutes,

  786. ex-convicts,

  787. recovering addicts

  788. who find freedom

  789. from their shame

  790. in this forgiving

  791. and cleansing

  792. love of God.

  793. By the way,

  794. if you listen

  795. long enough

  796. to people's

  797. stories in this

  798. church, you

  799. will know them.

  800. If you confess

  801. sins to each

  802. other, you'll

  803. learn that.

  804. And your

  805. ability to

  806. comprehend the

  807. love of a

  808. God who makes

  809. you new

  810. will grow.

  811. I wish every

  812. newlywed couple

  813. in the church

  814. could have been

  815. in my small

  816. group to watch

  817. Miss Betty

  818. love Mr. John

  819. through his

  820. last few years

  821. of life as he

  822. struggled to

  823. know where he

  824. was or what

  825. was going on.

  826. As I got to

  827. watch them

  828. together, I

  829. witnessed the

  830. patient and

  831. tender love

  832. of God in her

  833. that treasures

  834. us in our

  835. weakness.

  836. in a new

  837. way that has

  838. helped me

  839. in my

  840. marriage.

  841. Younger

  842. people struggling

  843. to hope in

  844. God's promises

  845. as they

  846. parent.

  847. They may see in

  848. older people's

  849. stories a God

  850. whose love is

  851. faithful to his

  852. promises even

  853. when it doesn't

  854. look like it.

  855. Older people

  856. struggling to

  857. maintain a zeal

  858. for the kingdom

  859. in their later

  860. years may see in

  861. younger people's

  862. stories a God

  863. whose love is the

  864. only hope of the

  865. next generation.

  866. God's love is

  867. so great.

  868. I still have a

  869. purpose to

  870. testify to that

  871. love and it's a

  872. great purpose.

  873. You get the idea

  874. of how beautiful

  875. God's design for

  876. his church is?

  877. We're a family.

  878. Same loving

  879. father, same

  880. older brother,

  881. same indwelling

  882. spirit.

  883. This is why we

  884. need to lean into

  885. these deep

  886. relationships with

  887. each other so we

  888. will experience his

  889. love more and be

  890. empowered to share

  891. that love so that

  892. my neighbors and

  893. Huntsville and the

  894. whole world will

  895. know more of his

  896. glory.

  897. Let me talk to you

  898. for just a couple

  899. minutes as we close

  900. about our new

  901. Connect communities.

  902. I really want to

  903. encourage you all to

  904. participate in these

  905. Connect communities as

  906. we pursue these kind

  907. of life-giving

  908. relationships.

  909. relationships.

  910. To be clear, I hope

  911. you realize as we

  912. talk this morning that

  913. these kind of

  914. relationships where

  915. we're confessing sin

  916. and carrying burdens

  917. and valuing each

  918. other, they don't

  919. take place in one

  920. hour a week in a

  921. room of 30 people.

  922. We got way too many

  923. sins and burdens for

  924. that, yes?

  925. Yep, we don't have

  926. time for mine next

  927. week.

  928. So it's not just

  929. there, but God's

  930. word is calling us,

  931. challenging us to

  932. lock arms with

  933. brothers and sisters

  934. more often than on

  935. Sundays.

  936. Breaking bread together

  937. in each other's homes,

  938. helping each other out

  939. day by day, praying in

  940. every situation.

  941. Those relationships take

  942. time to foster, don't

  943. they?

  944. And they're well worth

  945. it.

  946. Even our precious time

  947. that is so valuable is

  948. well worth the

  949. investment.

  950. So think of connect

  951. communities as places

  952. that we come together

  953. around God's word, not

  954. as placing you at the

  955. destination of

  956. relationship, but rather

  957. moving you down the

  958. path of relationship.

  959. They're called connect

  960. communities for a

  961. reason.

  962. You may well meet a

  963. brother or sister there

  964. with whom you develop

  965. deeper relationship

  966. beyond the group.

  967. We will urge each

  968. other there toward

  969. meeting regularly in

  970. small groups to share

  971. and confess and forgive

  972. and pray more.

  973. So if it's a three

  974. legged race that we're

  975. on, the connect

  976. community is not the

  977. finish line, but rather

  978. the starting line where

  979. you find your partner,

  980. where you get bound

  981. together through Jesus

  982. and his word to run the

  983. race together.

  984. together.

  985. Y'all don't go home to

  986. run alone.

  987. Lean into the

  988. relationships that God

  989. has made us for.

  990. You know, the tightness

  991. of that bond that we have

  992. in Jesus is so vitally

  993. important.

  994. But no matter how tight you

  995. tie that bond, most of the

  996. three legged races I run in

  997. end up with people scattered

  998. on the ground.

  999. Relationships, even in

1000. Jesus, even in the church

  1001. are messy, aren't they?

  1002. Yes?

1003. Can we get amen on that

  1004. one?

  1005. Yeah, okay.

1006. Come on, we gotta pick our

  1007. spots here.

1008. That seemed like an easy

  1009. one.

  1010. It's messier than

  1011. isolation, than hiding

  1012. alone, isn't it?

  1013. But that's actually another

  1014. reason that relationships

  1015. are worth the investment.

1016. It's not merely that Jesus

  1017. unites us in relationship.

  1018. But these relationships

1019. drive us back to Jesus,

  1020. don't they?

1021. Because when I get tied

1022. tightly to a brother or

1023. sister and rub up against

1024. them, my selfishness and my

  1025. weakness and my insecurity

  1026. become exposed.

  1027. And I see it.

1028. And I see my need for a

1029. Savior and a cross again.

  1030. But guess what?

1031. I'm not the only one who

  1032. sees it.

1033. This is the scary but

  1034. beautiful part.

1035. My brother or sister sees

1036. it too and is right there to

1037. point me to the Savior we

1038. both have who will never

  1039. leave us.

1040. Two are better than one.

1041. For if they fall, one will

  1042. lift up his fellow.

1043. But pity the one who falls and

1044. has no one to help him up.

1045. Praise God for a Savior.

1046. And because of him, brothers

1047. and sisters to help us up.

  1048. Let's pray.

1049. Father, we confess our need of

  1050. you again.

  1051. We need your help.

1052. Father, we need your love.

  1053. And we especially this

1054. morning need your spirit to

  1055. acknowledge that we need

  1056. each other.

1057. Father, show us that this is

1058. what you've created us for.

1059. That we might be known and

1060. that we might be loved.

1061. And you have loved us like

  1062. that.

1063. Thank you for being the one

1064. place we know we can be safe.

  1065. Father, would your love

  1066. transform a community like

1067. this one that people would

1068. begin to experience more and

1069. more safety among each other

1070. that they've found in you.

1071. Help us to love as we have

  1072. been loved.

1073. Thank you, Jesus, for your

  1074. love.

1075. Show it to us again this

  1076. morning.

1077. It's height and width and

1078. depth and breadth that it

  1079. would change our hearts.

1080. We thank you and we pray in

  1081. your name.

  1082. Amen.
