  3. 2 Kings 18, beginning in verse 1.

  4. In the third year of Hosea, son of Elah, king of Israel, Hezekiah, son of Ahaz, king of Judah, began to reign.

  5. He was 25 years old when he began to reign, and he reigned 29 years in Jerusalem.

  6. His mother's name was Abi, the daughter of Zechariah.

  7. And he did what was right in the eyes of the Lord according to all that David, his father, had done.

  8. He removed the high places and broke the pillars and cut down the Asherah.

  9. And he broke in pieces the bronze serpent that Moses had made.

  10. For until those days, the people of Israel had made offerings to it.

  11. It was called Nehushtan.

  12. He trusted in the Lord, the God of Israel, so that there was none like him among all the kings of Judah after him,

  13. nor among those who were before him.

  14. For he held fast to the Lord.

  15. He did not depart from following him, but kept the commandments that the Lord commanded Moses.

  16. And the Lord was with him.

  17. Wherever he went out, he prospered.

  18. He rebelled against the king of Assyria and would not serve him.

  19. He struck down the Philistines as far as Gaza and its territory from watchtower to fortified city.

  20. But in the fourth year of King Hezekiah, which was the seventh year of Hosea, son of Elah, king of Israel,

  21. Shalmaneser, king of Assyria, came up against Samaria and besieged it.

  22. And at the end of three years, he took it.

  23. In the sixth year of Hezekiah, which was the ninth year of Hosea, king of Israel, Samaria was taken.

  24. The king of Assyria carried the Israelites away to Assyria and put them in Hala.

  25. And on the harbor, the river Gozon and in the cities of the Medes.

  26. Because they did not obey the voice of the Lord their God, but transgressed his covenant,

  27. even all that Moses, the servant of the Lord, commanded, they neither listened nor obeyed.

  28. Let's pray together as we approach this portion of God's word.

  29. Oh, Father, we thank you for how you have worked in your people.

  30. We thank you for just the gift of this history.

  31. Because there we see you at work.

  32. But we also get the promise of how you will work.

  33. So, Father, as we study this part of Scripture that many of us have never read,

  34. we pray that you would open our eyes to what is here,

  35. but also open our hearts to how you might speak into us and give us hope.

  36. So, Father, come and pour out your Spirit.

  37. Lead us as we study.

  38. And use my words, as weak as they are,

  39. in such a way that we will know

  40. that by your Spirit,

  41. we have heard from you.

  42. So, come and do your work.

  43. In Jesus' name.

  44. Amen.

  45. You know, I'm sure there's many of you in here

  46. that are big fans of HGTV

  47. and Chip and Joanna Gaines.

  48. We like those rebuilding shows.

  49. I got a nine-year-old grandson who loves that show.

  50. Watches it a lot.

  51. You know, and it's the same story.

  52. You know, somebody goes and buys a house.

  53. They want to buy a house.

  54. And they want to refresh it.

  55. And so, you know, you go through the story.

  56. You look at all the things you can do.

  57. We got to paint a wall here,

  58. take a wall out over here.

  59. But then when you get down into the nitty-gritty

  60. of what's really there,

  61. basically the whole thing has to come down.

  62. Because there's a lot more going on

  63. than what you can see on the surface.

  64. Well, I think in a lot of ways,

  65. we take, when it comes to spiritual renewal,

  66. we take an HGTV approach.

  67. But it's more of we want a refreshing.

  68. We want a kind of redoing, you know,

  69. paint this room, change this wall.

  70. We're going to just kind of make it look better,

  71. look nicer.

  72. We want good curb appeal.

  73. Because everybody else that drives by our home,

  74. we want them to see how well we're doing.

  75. But we want life to get better.

  76. We want it to look better.

  77. We want it to feel better.

  78. But the problem is,

  79. there might be a lot more at work

  80. under the surface than you realize.

  81. You see, we can do this as a church as well.

  82. Maybe, you know, we just need to change our schedule.

  83. Maybe we need to freshen up our preacher.

  84. Maybe we need to...

  85. I'm not suggesting anything since Will is not here.

  86. Not at all.

  87. But this is the kind of approach we take.

  88. We just need to touch up here and fix this.

  89. But under the surface,

  90. there might be a dwelling

  91. that needs to be gutted

  92. and started over.

  93. You see, this is really what happens

  94. in the kingdom of Judah.

  95. Judah at this point...

  96. Well, let's go back

  97. and get a little history lesson here.

  98. Ever since the reign of Solomon,

  99. when Solomon died,

  100. the nation was split

  101. because of just a lot of foolishness.

  102. And so you had the northern tribes,

  103. 10 of the 12 tribes of Israel in the north

  104. went off to themselves

  105. and they were called Israel

  106. and their capital was Samaria.

  107. But the other tribes remained in the south.

  108. They were called Judah

  109. where the capital was Jerusalem.

  110. And so they really fared

  111. over these years,

  112. many, many decades,

  113. a whole lot better

  114. than their northern cousins

  115. because their northern cousins

  116. were really led into a lot of

  117. bad religion and idolatry

  118. through the leadership of Jeroboam.

  119. So much so that Jeroboam

  120. became the standard of badness

  121. for all of the kings

  122. that would come after him.

  123. So Judah fared a bit better

  124. and they had some good kings

  125. and some not so good kings.

  126. kings.

  127. But then comes Ahaz.

  128. And Ahaz was one of the worst.

  129. Ahaz built an altar

  130. and put it in the temple

  131. that was modeled after a pagan altar

  132. that he had seen in Syria.

  133. Ahaz took his sons

  134. and put them on the altar

  135. and burned them in the fire

  136. to these pagan gods.

  137. This is the king of God's people.

  138. He was awful.

  139. And towards the end,

  140. when he was threatened

  141. by the Syrians,

  142. he sent to the empire of Assyria

  143. who then was really kind of

  144. coming into their own

  145. and paid them

  146. to get the Syrians' office back.

  147. But in so doing,

  148. he made Judah and Jerusalem

  149. a slave to the Assyrians.

  150. And they served Assyria for years.

  151. And so he was as spiritually bankrupt

  152. as all the kings of Israel.

  153. And Israel now was finally

  154. and totally defeated

  155. at the hands of the Assyrians

  156. as an act of judgment of God

  157. and Judah and Jerusalem

  158. were very quickly heading

  159. in the same direction.

  160. These were dark days.

  161. Along comes a son,

  162. fortunately, who didn't get burned.

  163. His name was Hezekiah.

  164. Hezekiah, at the age of 25,

  165. the death of his father Ahaz

  166. becomes king.

  167. He is the product of this evil father

  168. but also, I think,

  169. a righteous mother.

  170. And he makes a U-turn

  171. for the nation.

  172. He brings about

  173. one of the most glorious times

  174. of renewal and revival

  175. in Jerusalem's history.

  176. It is wonderful.

  177. And there's much written

  178. about this reign.

  179. You'll find Hezekiah,

  180. parts of his reign,

  181. mentioned in three or four places

  182. in the scriptures.

  183. And I think we can learn a lot

  184. about what renewal

  185. actually looks like.

  186. You know, we may pray for it.

  187. We may want it in our lives,

  188. personally.

  189. We may want it corporately

  190. as a church.

  191. But what does it look like

  192. when it comes?

  193. We can get a good idea

  194. here from Hezekiah.

  195. So first,

  196. there are four things

  197. that I think I want to

  198. call our attention to.

  199. The first is that

  200. spirit-led renewal

  201. always,

  202. always

  203. begins

  204. with repentance.

  205. You know,

  206. there's a parallel account

  207. of Hezekiah's history.

  208. If you go over to

  209. 2 Chronicles 29,

  210. in there we see

  211. a few more details.

  212. It's almost like

  213. on the very first day

  214. of his reign,

  215. he's got this new job.

  216. Day one,

  217. he begins

  218. this cleansing process.

  219. He goes straight

  220. to the temple

  221. and

  222. throws open

  223. the doors

  224. and commands

  225. everybody

  226. to do a major

  227. house cleaning.

  228. All the altars,

  229. all of the

  230. trash,

  231. all of the

  232. filth

  233. that Ahaz

  234. had allowed

  235. to come in there

  236. was taken out.

  237. Now,

  238. all the pagan,

  239. all the defilement,

  240. it had to go

  241. in right worship

  242. of Yahweh,

  243. the covenant

  244. God

  245. restored.

  246. Now,

  247. this had been

  248. done,

  249. you know,

  250. in previous kings

  251. have come

  252. and done well

  253. and they had done

  254. similar

  255. things,

  256. but not

  257. to the degree

  258. that Hezekiah

  259. did.

  260. Because in the text

  261. here in

  262. 2 Kings,

  263. the writer

  264. makes a point.

  265. He says,

  266. you know,

  267. back in the other

  268. accounts,

  269. we see that

  270. the high places

  271. were not removed.

  272. These kings

  273. would do well,

  274. this king would do well

  275. and he would bring

  276. reform,

  277. but the high places

  278. were not removed.

  279. And it's interesting,

  280. here in Kings,

  281. Hezekiah

  282. removes

  283. the high places.

  284. The high places

  285. are places

  286. of pagan worship.

  287. They,

  288. on top of

  289. every hill,

  290. they erected

  291. these pillars,

  292. they had altars,

  293. and they worshiped,

  294. those were for

  295. the worship

  296. of the local

  297. fertility gods.

  298. And these were

  299. kind of leftovers,

  300. carryovers,

  301. from the pagan

  302. Christians,

  303. the Canaanites,

  304. that Israel

  305. was supposed

  306. to have wiped

  307. out when they

  308. occupied the land.

  309. But that didn't

  310. go as planned,

  311. and so a lot

  312. of these remained.

  313. And so even

  314. from the time,

  315. before the time

  316. of the occupation,

  317. these high places

  318. were places

  319. of worship

  320. of these local

  321. fertility gods.

  322. And they had

  323. become popular

  324. for the Israelites

  325. to do as well.

  326. And so they

  327. worshipped there,

  328. they sacrificed

  329. to the local

  330. fertility gods,

  331. and it was,

  332. and it had been

  333. going on

  334. for hundreds

  335. of years.

  336. This is what

  337. we would call

  338. syncretism.

  339. Syncretism

  340. is a blending.

  341. We saw this,

  342. I saw this

  343. very clearly

  344. when I went

  345. down to Peru

  346. back in July,

  347. where the

  348. Inca

  349. religion

  350. of those areas

  351. was blended

  352. in with the

  353. Catholicism

  354. that the

  355. Spaniards brought.

  356. And so you see

  357. signs of both

  358. of these,

  359. you know,

  360. the local

  361. religion and the

  362. Catholicism of the

  363. Spaniards,

  364. it all just kind of

  365. merged and blended.

  366. And so they took

  367. things of this

  368. and took things

  369. of this

  370. and made

  371. something

  372. altogether

  373. sort of

  374. new.

  375. But syncretism

  376. does that.

  377. It's kind of like

  378. hedging your bets.

  379. You don't want to

  380. put all your

  381. eggs in one

  382. basket,

  383. so you worship

  384. here,

  385. but you also

  386. worship over here

  387. just in case,

  388. you know,

  389. you're covered.

  390. So the Israelites

  391. had become

  392. very syncretistic

  393. in their religion

  394. and that

  395. syncretism

  396. was leading

  397. them

  398. towards

  399. death.

  400. It's what

  401. happened,

  402. in fact,

  403. really what

  404. happened in the

  405. north was not

  406. syncretism at all.

  407. It was an

  408. abandonment

  409. of their covenant

  410. religion,

  411. but not in Judah.

  412. They held on to

  413. temple worship

  414. but added some

  415. things to it

  416. as well.

  417. So on the

  418. surface,

  419. they still

  420. claimed worship

  421. to Yahweh,

  422. but their hearts

  423. were divided.

  424. They were trying

  425. to live with

  426. one foot

  427. in both worlds.

  428. And God

  429. had sent them

  430. prophets

  431. to warn them.

  432. He had sent

  433. circumstances

  434. to really

  435. kind of break

  436. them so that

  437. they would

  438. understand where

  439. they were headed.

  440. But up

  441. until now,

  442. they didn't

  443. get the

  444. point.

  445. But Hezekiah

  446. did.

  447. And he did

  448. some.

  449. So,

  450. are we prone

  451. to syncretism?

  452. well,

  453. yeah,

  454. probably

  455. far more

  456. than we

  457. realize.

  458. Now,

  459. when we buy

  460. into our

  461. culture's

  462. values

  463. and worship

  464. at the

  465. cultural

  466. altars,

  467. we claim

  468. this

  469. religion,

  470. we claim

  471. faithfulness

  472. to this

  473. God,

  474. but at the

  475. same time,

  476. we're bowing

  477. over here

  478. and we

  479. blend them

  480. in so

  481. that it

  482. all looks

  483. like one

  484. neat

  485. package,

  486. we become

  487. syncretistic.

  488. Now,

  489. I get a

  490. chance

  491. often,

  492. and I

  493. enjoy the

  494. opportunity

  495. when I

  496. do,

  497. is to do

  498. premarital

  499. counseling.

  500. But when I

  501. do premarital

  502. counseling,

  503. as soon as

  504. a couple

  505. walks in

  506. my door,

  507. I make

  508. an assumption.

  509. And I'm

  510. rarely proven

  511. wrong.

  512. That couple

  513. will come in

  514. and claim

  515. to be

  516. Christians.

  517. They'll claim

  518. to believe in

  519. God.

  520. They'll claim,

  521. you know,

  522. whatever.

  523. But I also,

  524. I assume

  525. when they walk

  526. in that door

  527. that they're

  528. sleeping together.

  529. It's just

  530. a given.

  531. And I'm

  532. real happy

  533. if I'm

  534. proven wrong.

  535. Don't

  536. but I

  537. rarely am.

  538. Most,

  539. you know,

  540. just,

  541. why would

  542. we stay

  543. chaste?

  544. Why would

  545. we stay

  546. apart in

  547. this culture

  548. where we

  549. live?

  550. Where it's

  551. expected?

  552. Why would

  553. I want to

  554. be so

  555. different?

  556. One of the

  557. cultural values

  558. that tells me

  559. is that I'm

  560. supposed to

  561. be happy.

  562. And sex

  563. is the way

  564. there.

  565. The problem

  566. is that our

  567. faith values

  568. something very

  569. different.

  570. difference.

  571. And we

  572. can talk

  573. why we

  574. value

  575. something

  576. different

  577. maybe another

  578. day.

  579. But too

  580. many people

  581. want to

  582. claim that

  583. they worship

  584. Jesus

  585. all the

  586. while

  587. bowing

  588. at the

  589. altars

  590. of our

  591. modern

  592. culture.

  593. love

  594. and

  595. it's not

  596. just

  597. sex.

  598. It's also

  599. our

  600. affluence.

  601. I was

  602. thinking this

  603. week,

  604. I wonder

  605. how I

  606. would have

  607. reacted

  608. when the

  609. rich young

  610. ruler comes

  611. to Jesus

  612. and he

  613. says,

  614. you know,

  615. what must

  616. I do to

  617. enter the

  618. kingdom of

  619. God?

  620. He says,

  621. hey,

  622. Jesus,

  623. I want to

  624. be a good

  625. Christian.

  626. What do

  627. I need

  628. to do?

  629. And so

  630. he's

  631. supposedly

  632. asking the

  633. right question.

  634. Well,

  635. Jesus gives

  636. him the

  637. wrong

  638. answer.

  639. According to

  640. him,

  641. he said,

  642. go,

  643. sell all

  644. your

  645. possessions,

  646. give the

  647. money to

  648. the poor,

  649. and you'll

  650. have treasure

  651. in heaven,

  652. and then

  653. come follow

  654. me.

  655. So how

  656. would I

  657. respond if

  658. Jesus said

  659. that to

  660. me?

  661. Would I

  662. say,

  663. run off,

  664. or would I

  665. run off in

  666. despair like

  667. that rich

  668. young

  669. ruler,

  670. or would

  671. I say

  672. to him,

  673. been there,

  674. done that,

  675. I'm with

  676. you,

  677. it's all

  678. gone?

  679. Sadly,

  680. no.

  681. See,

  682. worship is

  683. all about

  684. what I

  685. treasure.

  686. And do

  687. I find my

  688. treasure in

  689. Jesus,

  690. or do I

  691. find it

  692. somewhere

  693. else?

  694. I read

  695. this last

  696. week,

  697. there was

  698. an interview

  699. done by

  700. this author,

  701. her name

  702. was Nancy

  703. Jo Sales,

  704. and she

  705. did this

  706. with some

  707. teenage girls,

  708. and I'm

  709. talking about

  710. teenage girls

  711. here,

  712. but just

  713. realize that

  714. this refers

  715. to most of

  716. us adults

  717. as well,

  718. particularly

  719. talking about

  720. their social

  721. media habits,

  722. and their

  723. level of

  724. social standing

  725. with their

  726. peers,

  727. there was a

  728. very elaborate

  729. protocol on

  730. social media

  731. of how you

  732. maintain your

  733. position and

  734. status.

  735. In other words,

  736. who you liked,

  737. what you liked,

  738. what you commented

  739. on, who could

  740. comment on this,

  741. all of this

  742. stuff.

  743. And a young

  744. girl simply

  745. said,

  746. social media is

  747. destroying our

  748. lives.

  749. So the

  750. interviewer asked,

  751. so why don't

  752. you get off

  753. it?

  754. And the

  755. girl responded,

  756. because then we

  757. would have no

  758. life.

  759. I don't know

  760. if she was a

  761. believer or not.

  762. I know a lot

  763. of us that claim

  764. faith in Jesus

  765. would have a

  766. very hard time

  767. putting down

  768. our phones

  769. and social

  770. media.

  771. Because that's

  772. where we're

  773. trying to

  774. build life.

  775. If I have

  776. no life

  777. outside my

  778. devices,

  779. if I have

  780. no life

  781. outside my

  782. retirement

  783. account,

  784. if I have

  785. no life

  786. outside of

  787. pleasure,

  788. I'm

  789. syncretistic.

  790. When I

  791. throw off

  792. the worship

  793. of God,

  794. in order to

  795. offer my

  796. kids on the

  797. altar of

  798. sports,

  799. experiences,

  800. or

  801. entertainment,

  802. I'm

  803. syncretistic.

  804. When I

  805. think that my

  806. highest value is

  807. personal freedom

  808. or individual

  809. choice,

  810. I might be

  811. syncretistic.

  812. Shall I

  813. continue?

  814. Notice I

  815. haven't even

  816. brought up

  817. football.

  818. It was a

  819. very inconvenient

  820. schedule,

  821. preaching that

  822. this week.

  823. Though I will

  824. say Marshall in

  825. West Virginia

  826. did very well.

  827. we are too

  828. often trying

  829. to stand with

  830. one foot in

  831. both worlds.

  832. One with

  833. Jesus and

  834. the other in

  835. our high

  836. places.

  837. And we're

  838. dying.

  839. Too often we

  840. want renewal

  841. without disrupting

  842. those worship

  843. sites.

  844. Too often we

  845. want renewal

  846. that just helps

  847. us to feel

  848. better, to

  849. make life work

  850. better, so

  851. that I will

  852. be more

  853. affluent or

  854. more popular

  855. or you name

  856. it, more

  857. successful.

  858. And we think

  859. that's what Jesus

  860. has come to

  861. do.

  862. And the

  863. high places

  864. remain.

  865. But if real

  866. renewal, if a

  867. real restoration

  868. with Jesus is

  869. going to take

  870. place, those

  871. high places

  872. must come

  873. down.

  874. To let them

  875. remain is like

  876. getting married

  877. and then not

  878. getting rid of

  879. the pictures of

  880. the old

  881. girlfriends,

  882. keeping their

  883. phone numbers

  884. and addresses

  885. and even

  886. going back and

  887. visiting now

  888. and then.

  889. Because again,

  890. you don't want

  891. to, you got to

  892. hedge your bets

  893. here.

  894. Ask your spouse

  895. what she would

  896. think of that.

  897. Or he would

  898. think of that.

  899. It's the renewal

  900. of a love

  901. relationship is

  902. what we're

  903. after.

  904. And it's a

  905. relationship with

  906. our first love,

  907. our true love,

  908. who will

  909. tolerate no

  910. rivals.

  911. And that's

  912. what renewal

  913. is.

  914. And like in a

  915. marriage, when

  916. you get married,

  917. the scriptures

  918. say in Genesis

  919. 1, it says

  920. you are to

  921. leave your

  922. father and

  923. mother and

  924. then cleave.

  925. And that

  926. means to

  927. kind of stick

  928. like glue.

  929. And it's

  930. interesting, that's

  931. the very word

  932. that the writer

  933. of Kings uses

  934. here in this

  935. text.

  936. When it says

  937. that Hezekiah

  938. held fast,

  939. it's the word

  940. cleave.

  941. Hezekiah was

  942. leaving and

  943. cleaving.

  944. He was

  945. leaving all

  946. rivals behind

  947. and He was

  948. cleaving to

  949. His true

  950. love.

  951. And that

  952. is what

  953. repentance

  954. is.

  955. It is

  956. throwing off

  957. false loves

  958. and coming

  959. home.

  960. We belong

  961. to only

  962. one and

  963. to only

  964. one we

  965. are to

  966. cleave.

  967. So renewal

  968. begins with

  969. repentance.

  970. Always

  971. begins with

  972. repentance.

  973. But secondly,

  974. renewal,

  975. spirit-led

  976. renewal

  977. pays the

  978. price of

  979. repentance.

  980. The

  981. cleansing

  982. that Hezekiah

  983. brought about

  984. in this

  985. nation was

  986. incredible.

  987. But it

  988. was costly.

  989. You know

  990. what he

  991. risked by

  992. even tearing

  993. down all

  994. those high

  995. places that

  996. everybody else

  997. in the

  998. country was

  999. very used

  1000. to using?

  1001. But even

  1002. more so,

  1003. there was

  1004. Assyria.

  1005. Because when

  1006. Ahaz turned

  1007. to Assyria

  1008. for his

  1009. security,

  1010. which was

  1011. something very

  1012. clearly taught

  1013. to him that

  1014. he was not

  1015. supposed to

  1016. do,

  1017. and the

  1018. prophets

  1019. warned him

  1020. that he was

  1021. not supposed

  1022. to do it,

  1023. he subjected

  1024. Jerusalem to

  1025. their

  1026. authority,

  1027. to their

  1028. reign,

  1029. and Israel,

  1030. Jerusalem,

  1031. not Israel,

  1032. Jerusalem,

  1033. Judah,

  1034. had to

  1035. pay a

  1036. very high

  1037. price to

  1038. them on a

  1039. regular basis

  1040. to keep that

  1041. security.

  1042. And for

  1043. Hezekiah,

  1044. if he was

  1045. going to

  1046. worship and

  1047. trust Yahweh

  1048. alone,

  1049. he had to

  1050. deal with

  1051. Assyria.

  1052. And so what

  1053. the text says,

  1054. he rebelled

  1055. against the

  1056. king of

  1057. Assyria.

  1058. But if you

  1059. notice in the

  1060. text, the

  1061. writer of

  1062. Kings very

  1063. importantly

  1064. puts verses

  1065. 9 through

  1066. 12 right

  1067. here.

  1068. It's like,

  1069. why is there

  1070. this little

  1071. section,

  1072. it jumps out

  1073. and talks about

  1074. Israel and

  1075. their downfall?

  1076. It's because

  1077. to show that

  1078. when Hezekiah

  1079. made this

  1080. choice,

  1081. he was

  1082. doing so

  1083. in this

  1084. context.

  1085. He's already

  1086. seen what

  1087. Assyria can

  1088. do and

  1089. will do.

  1090. And he

  1091. chose that.

  1092. So here

  1093. was Hezekiah's

  1094. choice.

  1095. He could

  1096. die,

  1097. just like

  1098. Israel.

  1099. They could

  1100. not do

  1101. anything.

  1102. They could

  1103. not go

  1104. through all

  1105. this cleansing.

  1106. He didn't

  1107. have to

  1108. repent.

  1109. And they

  1110. could just

  1111. hope that

  1112. they could

  1113. repel the

  1114. armies of

  1115. Assyria,

  1116. which no

  1117. one up to

  1118. this point

  1119. has done,

  1120. nor even

  1121. slowed them

  1122. down.

  1123. So He

  1124. could die

  1125. this same

  1126. death that

  1127. Israel has

  1128. died as

  1129. an act of

  1130. the judgment

  1131. of His

  1132. God,

  1133. death.

  1134. He could

  1135. die.

  1136. He could

  1137. die.

  1138. He could

  1139. die.

  1140. He could

  1141. die.

  1142. He could

  1143. die.

  1144. Throwing

  1145. himself on

  1146. the protection

  1147. of God,

  1148. but facing

  1149. this huge

  1150. army of

  1151. Assyria.

  1152. His choice

  1153. was not

  1154. whether he

  1155. wanted to

  1156. die or

  1157. not.

  1158. The choice

  1159. was how.

  1160. His choice

  1161. was death,

  1162. or death.

  1163. And that's

  1164. what

  1165. repentance

  1166. is.

  1167. Repentance

  1168. is choosing

  1169. death

  1170. one way

  1171. or the

  1172. other.

  1173. If we

  1174. choose not

  1175. to repent,

  1176. we choose

  1177. death.

  1178. Because our

  1179. sin will

  1180. kill us.

  1181. it will

  1182. suck the

  1183. life out

  1184. of us

  1185. eventually.

  1186. Maybe

  1187. slowly,

  1188. but eventually.

  1189. And it

  1190. hardens

  1191. us.

  1192. Or,

  1193. we can

  1194. choose

  1195. death.

  1196. To die

  1197. to those

  1198. high places.

  1199. To die

  1200. to the

  1201. grip those

  1202. idols have

  1203. in our

  1204. hearts.

  1205. some years

  1206. ago,

  1207. I had to

  1208. deal

  1209. with an

  1210. area of

  1211. sin in

  1212. my own

  1213. life

  1214. that was

  1215. slowly

  1216. but surely

  1217. crushing

  1218. me.

  1219. And my

  1220. life and

  1221. joy were

  1222. being sucked

  1223. away,

  1224. drawn away,

  1225. and living

  1226. under this

  1227. weight

  1228. of the

  1229. guilt and

  1230. the shame,

  1231. the slavery

  1232. that comes

  1233. with it,

  1234. I had a

  1235. choice.

  1236. I could

  1237. either

  1238. let it

  1239. continue

  1240. and let

  1241. it take

  1242. my life.

  1243. Or,

  1244. I could

  1245. choose to

  1246. die.

  1247. Die

  1248. to myself.

  1249. Die

  1250. to my

  1251. reputation.

  1252. Die

  1253. to my

  1254. shame

  1255. and guilt.

  1256. And tear

  1257. down the

  1258. high place.

  1259. Those

  1260. are the

  1261. choices.

  1262. The

  1263. question was

  1264. this.

  1265. It was not

  1266. whether I was

  1267. going to die,

  1268. it was whether

  1269. how.

  1270. But the

  1271. big question

  1272. was,

  1273. if I chose

  1274. death through

  1275. repentance,

  1276. would Christ

  1277. be enough?

  1278. Could

  1279. Christ be

  1280. sufficient in

  1281. his righteousness,

  1282. in his caring,

  1283. in his presence?

  1284. Would that

  1285. be enough

  1286. to make

  1287. do,

  1288. to make up

  1289. for everything

  1290. else?

  1291. Would

  1292. Christ be

  1293. sufficient

  1294. for me?

  1295. And I

  1296. came to

  1297. one

  1298. conclusion,

  1299. that he

  1300. would.

  1301. Our

  1302. high

  1303. places

  1304. must

  1305. come down.

  1306. They

  1307. offer

  1308. only

  1309. temporary

  1310. relief.

  1311. They

  1312. promise

  1313. only

  1314. temporary

  1315. rest

  1316. and hope.

  1317. But true

  1318. death

  1319. is coming.

  1320. And we

  1321. can either

  1322. die to

  1323. those high

  1324. places

  1325. or we'll

  1326. die on

  1327. them.

  1328. You can

  1329. sell your

  1330. possessions

  1331. and it

  1332. will feel

  1333. like death.

  1334. You can

  1335. get off

  1336. of your

  1337. computers,

  1338. put your

  1339. phones down

  1340. and it'll

  1341. feel like

  1342. death.

  1343. The

  1344. promise

  1345. we have

  1346. is that

  1347. if that's

  1348. the choice

  1349. we make,

  1350. there is

  1351. life on

  1352. the other

  1353. side.

  1354. Hezekiah

  1355. knew it.

  1356. do we

  1357. know that.

  1358. The warning

  1359. giving us

  1360. here by

  1361. kings is

  1362. that our

  1363. true love

  1364. will simply

  1365. not tolerate

  1366. these rivals

  1367. and we

  1368. need to

  1369. choose

  1370. to die

  1371. to those

  1372. idols

  1373. because there

  1374. is a

  1375. redeemer

  1376. who will

  1377. come

  1378. and save

  1379. us.

  1380. third

  1381. thing.

  1382. Now

  1383. you're

  1384. seeing that

  1385. I wasn't

  1386. lying about

  1387. the sermon.

  1388. Spirit-led

  1389. renewal

  1390. remembers

  1391. the

  1392. redeemer

  1393. always.

  1394. Spirit-led

  1395. renewal

  1396. always runs

  1397. to the

  1398. redeemer.

  1399. It's

  1400. interesting

  1401. if you

  1402. go back

  1403. to 2

  1404. Chronicles

  1405. and you

  1406. see more

  1407. of what

  1408. Hezekiah

  1409. did,

  1410. one of the

  1411. things that

  1412. he did

  1413. was he

  1414. reinstituted

  1415. the

  1416. Passover

  1417. a Passover

  1418. that had

  1419. not been

  1420. celebrated

  1421. for

  1422. decades

  1423. maybe

  1424. centuries

  1425. and so

  1426. the Passover

  1427. was critical.

  1428. Why the

  1429. Passover?

  1430. Well the

  1431. Passover

  1432. reminded

  1433. the people

  1434. of Jerusalem

  1435. a couple

  1436. of key

  1437. things.

  1438. One

  1439. it reminded

  1440. them that

  1441. they were

  1442. God's

  1443. people

  1444. and that

  1445. he bought

  1446. them

  1447. through the

  1448. blood of

  1449. the Lamb

  1450. that he

  1451. was their

  1452. God.

  1453. They were

  1454. his people

  1455. and that

  1456. lamb was

  1457. offered as

  1458. part of the

  1459. covenant that

  1460. he made

  1461. with them

  1462. so it

  1463. reminded them

  1464. of that

  1465. covenant

  1466. but it

  1467. also

  1468. reminded

  1469. them of

  1470. his power

  1471. to save

  1472. and preserve

  1473. because through

  1474. that Passover

  1475. the very first

  1476. one he took

  1477. down one of

  1478. the most

  1479. powerful nations

  1480. the world

  1481. had known

  1482. and that was

  1483. the nation

  1484. of Egypt

  1485. and so

  1486. that Passover

  1487. as they came

  1488. and celebrated

  1489. it was a

  1490. reminder

  1491. it was

  1492. remembering

  1493. who they

  1494. were

  1495. what was

  1496. their identity

  1497. who are we

  1498. and whose

  1499. are we

  1500. who do we

  1501. belong to

  1502. and what

  1503. will this

  1504. one do

  1505. that we

  1506. belong to

  1507. to work

  1508. for those

  1509. who wait

  1510. for him

  1511. and so

  1512. the Passover

  1513. was

  1514. wonderfully

  1515. significant

  1516. in fact

  1517. you ought to

  1518. go back

  1519. and read

  1520. this

  1521. they had

  1522. so much

  1523. fun

  1524. celebrating

  1525. the Passover

  1526. that they

  1527. extended it

  1528. for an extra

  1529. week

  1530. they were

  1531. supposed to

  1532. this feast

  1533. of unleavened

  1534. bread

  1535. they celebrated

  1536. for a week

  1537. and they got

  1538. through

  1539. and it says

  1540. we're not

  1541. done

  1542. and so

  1543. they

  1544. did it

  1545. for another

  1546. week

  1547. and it

  1548. also said

  1549. that the

  1550. Levites

  1551. who were

  1552. leading them

  1553. in worship

  1554. were singing

  1555. at the top

  1556. of their

  1557. lungs

  1558. they were

  1559. singing

  1560. with all

  1561. their

  1562. might

  1563. that's

  1564. something

  1565. happens

  1566. more in

  1567. football

  1568. stadiums

  1569. than in

  1570. our

  1571. churches

  1572. but they

  1573. were rejoicing

  1574. because

  1575. they remembered

  1576. they remembered

  1577. and that's

  1578. why we

  1579. come to

  1580. worship

  1581. that's

  1582. why this

  1583. time

  1584. together

  1585. is so

  1586. critical

  1587. is that

  1588. we come

  1589. to remember

  1590. who we

  1591. belong to

  1592. who is

  1593. with us

  1594. and I love

  1595. the phrase

  1596. there in

  1597. 2nd Kings

  1598. where it

  1599. says

  1600. and God

  1601. was with

  1602. him

  1603. because of

  1604. the work

  1605. of the cross

  1606. I am not

  1607. my own

  1608. I have been

  1609. bought

  1610. out of the

  1611. kingdom of

  1612. darkness

  1613. into the

  1614. kingdom

  1615. of light

  1616. I have

  1617. been paid

  1618. for by

  1619. the blood

  1620. of not

  1621. just a

  1622. lamb

  1623. but the

  1624. ultimate

  1625. lamb

  1626. and he

  1627. is now

  1628. mine

  1629. and I

  1630. am his

  1631. and he

  1632. wraps me

  1633. in his

  1634. care

  1635. and will

  1636. let

  1637. nothing

  1638. nothing

  1639. get to

  1640. me

  1641. outside

  1642. of his

  1643. love

  1644. and goodness

  1645. spirit

  1646. led

  1647. renewal

  1648. runs

  1649. back to

  1650. Jesus

  1651. and to

  1652. worship

  1653. and finds

  1654. him

  1655. sufficient

  1656. for

  1657. everything

  1658. fourthly

  1659. spirit

  1660. led

  1661. renewal

  1662. also

  1663. hopes

  1664. for a

  1665. greater

  1666. king

  1667. as great

  1668. a king

  1669. as Hezekiah

  1670. was

  1671. he was

  1672. simply

  1673. a pointer

  1674. he was

  1675. a marker

  1676. he was

  1677. yes

  1678. so much

  1679. better

  1680. than the

  1681. others

  1682. but he

  1683. pointed

  1684. Israel

  1685. Jerusalem

  1686. and Judah

  1687. to a

  1688. future

  1689. king

  1690. who would

  1691. come

  1692. and not

  1693. just tear

  1694. down

  1695. pagan

  1696. altars

  1697. but would

  1698. come and

  1699. transform

  1700. hearts

  1701. he would

  1702. come

  1703. and make

  1704. all

  1705. things

  1706. new

  1707. and he

  1708. would come

  1709. and reign

  1710. righteously

  1711. over

  1712. not just

  1713. Jerusalem

  1714. and Judea

  1715. but over

  1716. all of

  1717. the world

  1718. and this

  1719. king

  1720. is our

  1721. hope

  1722. when Jesus

  1723. comes to

  1724. our lives

  1725. he doesn't

  1726. just come

  1727. to make

  1728. it better

  1729. he doesn't

  1730. come to

  1731. refresh

  1732. he doesn't

  1733. come just

  1734. to patch

  1735. holes

  1736. he comes

  1737. to restore

  1738. to

  1739. deconstruct

  1740. so that

  1741. we can be

  1742. rebuilt

  1743. into the

  1744. temple

  1745. fitting

  1746. for him

  1747. to dwell

  1748. this

  1749. this is

  1750. what

  1751. Christ

  1752. comes

  1753. to do

  1754. will

  1755. we

  1756. trust

  1757. him

  1758. to do

  1759. that

  1760. how do

  1761. we know

  1762. we can

  1763. because he's

  1764. already paid

  1765. he's already

  1766. shown us

  1767. how far

  1768. he will

  1769. go

  1770. through his

  1771. death on

  1772. the cross

  1773. he is

  1774. worthy

  1775. of our

  1776. trust

  1777. he's

  1778. worthy

  1779. of our

  1780. dying

  1781. to these

  1782. piddly

  1783. little

  1784. idols

  1785. and altars

  1786. that we

  1787. would come

  1788. give our

  1789. lives

  1790. to the

  1791. true king

  1792. let's pray

  1793. father I

  1794. pray that you

  1795. would pour

  1796. out your

  1797. spirit on

  1798. us and

  1799. bring us

  1800. to this

  1801. place of

  1802. renewal

  1803. in many

  1804. ways

  1805. it may

  1806. be hard

  1807. we

  1808. acknowledge

  1809. that we

  1810. need

  1811. deconstruction

  1812. we

  1813. acknowledge

  1814. that we

  1815. need a

  1816. deeper

  1817. work

  1818. than what

  1819. just

  1820. appears

  1821. on the

  1822. surface

  1823. we

  1824. acknowledge

  1825. that we

  1826. cannot do

  1827. it

  1828. ourselves

  1829. we need

  1830. you

  1831. and your

  1832. spirit

  1833. to come

  1834. and do

  1835. this

  1836. work

  1837. would

  1838. you

  1839. would

  1840. you do

  1841. it in

  1842. us

  1843. individually

  1844. would

  1845. you do

  1846. it in

  1847. us

  1848. as a

  1849. church

  1850. do it

  1851. so deep

  1852. that our

  1853. joy will

  1854. raise

  1855. it will

  1856. rise up

  1857. and proclaim

  1858. to the

  1859. world

  1860. how great

  1861. you are

  1862. so come

  1863. we give

  1864. ourselves

  1865. to you

  1866. to do

  1867. as you

  1868. wish

  1869. in the

  1870. great

  1871. and strong

  1872. and good

  1873. name of

  1874. Jesus

  1875. Amen
