  1. You are listening to a message from Southwood Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama.

  2. Our passion is to experience and express grace. Join us.

  3. Will, if I didn't love you so much and care about Southwood, I would offer James Parker and the band a million dollars to come to Rock Hill, South Carolina.

  4. And I'm not exaggerating. That was wonderful. It was just wonderful to be back and worshiping here.

  5. And let me just make a couple of remarks. I'll be brief, and then I really just want to preach and talk about the one we have gathered to worship.

  6. Barney, where are you? I know I heard you earlier. Ah, right there. I got to say this to Barney.

  7. Barney, you'll remember this, but when I first came to Southwood, every once in a while I have a question.

  8. So I'd call Barney, and Barney would say, yeah, da-da-da-da-da.

  9. And yeah, thanks, Barney. That's what I needed.

  10. And then I would, every time near the end of the conversation, I'd say, Barney, thank you for giving me such a great church.

  11. You remember that? And you'd say, finally, after I did that a number of times, I'd say, Mike, you don't have to tell me that anymore.

  12. I get it. Thank you.

  13. And really, I mean, it was just such a dear church, dear congregation to be a part of.

  14. And then, you know, humanly speaking,

  15. I'm not supposed to do this, don't want to do this.

  16. Ralph, kill.

  17. You know, humanly speaking, between Barney and me, there was, I think, almost a year and a half.

  18. Is that right, Ralph? Close to that?

  19. Well, humanly speaking, Ralph really kept this congregation together.

  20. And when I got here, Ralph realized pretty quickly I didn't have an administrative bone in my body.

  21. And so he just did what needed to be done.

  22. And there's so much more I could say.

  23. But, you know, when I first got here, I was, I really still saw myself as a real estate developer who had gone to seminary.

  24. And that's the truth.

  25. And I was learning to be a pastor.

  26. And learned a lot.

  27. I'm not going to cry.

  28. From you, Ralph, thank you.

  29. Gosh, I'm going to say a few more words.

  30. And Will told me to take my time.

  31. So I'm going to take my time.

  32. Six hours later, we'll have dinner on the grounds.

  33. Ken Leggett, where are you?

  34. I know you're somewhere around.

  35. Ken!

  36. I've just never seen a more vital youth ministry.

  37. It was tremendous.

  38. You're one of the craziest youth ministers I've ever known.

  39. But, perhaps the best I've ever seen.

  40. You're great.

  41. And I love you and still love getting together with you on the porch at the beach anytime we can.

  42. Nancy McCrite.

  43. What a dear.

  44. You know, you probably recognized pretty quickly, too, after I got here,

  45. that I didn't know anything about running a children's ministry.

  46. And I didn't need to.

  47. You knew everything about it.

  48. And I could say so much about you.

  49. You're joy.

  50. You're just, you're full of joy.

  51. You're fun to be with.

  52. The kids obviously saw that.

  53. And one of the things that I treasure about you is that you did something very few people can do.

  54. And you got to a place in the ministry where you just said,

  55. I think it's time for someone else to come and to lead the ministry.

  56. And after you told me that 150 times, I decided I better believe you.

  57. I didn't want to believe you.

  58. But I said, maybe I should just say okay.

  59. And then we called somebody to lead the ministry, but we asked you to stay.

  60. And you did.

  61. And boy, the ministry would not have been the same without you.

  62. It's just dear to see you.

  63. Now, y'all don't know this about Will Spink,

  64. but when we were considering calling an assistant pastor

  65. and we realized that Will might be available,

  66. he was finishing at Covenant Seminary,

  67. somebody asked me about him.

  68. And just looking at him and learning about him,

  69. I said, that's the kind of person you just want to get on the team

  70. and he'll find his way.

  71. And he has.

  72. And he's, y'all are really blessed to have Will here as your senior pastor.

  73. I could say so much, but I could say,

  74. I'm not going to talk anymore because I will cry,

  75. but I will say this.

  76. Whew.

  77. It's just so dear.

  78. To be back with people that we still love

  79. and still feel loved by.

  80. So we're here.

  81. That's enough crying.

  82. We're going to preach.

  83. Let's look at Philippians chapter 2.

    Philippians 2 chapter mention

  84. You'll find that on page 981 in the Bibles that we have for you in the pews.

  85. When Wesley graduated from college,

  86. one of the gifts that we gave him was a book called Love Does by Bob Goff.

  87. So it's older now.

  88. But in that book, he asks the question

  89. that I want to begin to help us think about where we're going.

  90. And the question was this,

  91. have you ever been stalked before?

  92. And then he describes how creepy it is to be stalked,

  93. which we certainly understand.

  94. But then he confesses that at one point in his life,

  95. he was a stalker.

  96. Pretty significant confession.

  97. And he said,

  98. like other stalkers,

  99. I learned a lot of facts about this person,

  100. studied those facts intently,

  101. and got a lot of pictures that I put up on the wall

  102. and studied those pictures as well.

  103. But I never really got to know that person,

  104. just like stalkers typically do.

  105. They never really get to know the person.

  106. They just get to know a lot about the person.

  107. And then Bob, in his wonderful way,

  108. said the person I used to stalk was Jesus.

  109. And he said,

  110. I was in a Bible study,

  111. but it seems to me that all we did in that Bible study

  112. was learn a lot of facts about Jesus,

  113. but never really got to know Him,

  114. never really began to enjoy Him

  115. and delight in Him and love Him.

  116. And then in his humorous way,

  117. he says,

  118. you know,

  119. so what is it about equating Bible study

  120. with getting to know God anyway?

  121. And he said,

  122. you know,

  123. if I have people I care about,

  124. I don't want to just learn facts about them,

  125. how bad would that be?

  126. And if I'm going to get married,

  127. I don't want to just study the person.

  128. I want to take her out for a ride on a Ferris wheel

  129. or go sailing or go fishing,

  130. do something.

  131. And then he says,

  132. you know,

  133. and after all,

  134. there's a word for men

  135. who just kind of study the person

  136. that they're interested in

  137. but never take the initiative

  138. to get to know that person.

  139. They're called bachelors.

  140. Now,

  141. just so you're not worried about Bob Goff or me,

  142. he is in a Bible study,

  143. but the Bible study now is very different

  144. from what he was in before.

  145. Yes,

  146. he's learning more and more about Jesus.

  147. It's his life's ambition.

  148. But he's also getting to know Jesus,

  149. to delight in Jesus,

  150. to spend time with Jesus,

  151. to love Jesus.

  152. And I would say the older I get,

  153. I think the more focused my life becomes.

  154. I want it to be

  155. about knowing Jesus better.

  156. I mean,

  157. that's why he came to earth.

  158. John 1, 14,

  159. and the word became flesh

  160. and made his dwelling among us.

  161. And then in Hebrews 2,

  162. we're told that he actually

  163. shared in our humanity.

  164. He did so much

  165. for us

  166. so that we could really get to know him,

  167. not just learn about him.

  168. The passage I want to read from today

  169. is Philippians 2,

  170. and I'm going to be reading it

  171. from the message.

  172. And let me just say up front,

  173. this is not going to be

  174. a typical sermon.

  175. I'm not going to just work my way

  176. through this passage.

  177. I'm going to share bits and pieces

  178. from a number of passages

  179. to make one big point.

  180. But let me start with

  181. Philippians 2,

    Philippians 2:7

  182. verse 7,

  183. reading from the message.

  184. I rarely do that,

  185. but every once in a while,

  186. Eugene Peterson

  187. has just captured so well

  188. the meaning of a passage.

  189. When the time came,

  190. he, Jesus,

  191. set aside the privileges of deity

  192. and took on the status

  193. of a slave,

  194. became human.

  195. Having become human,

  196. he stayed human.

  197. It was an incredibly humbling process.

  198. He didn't claim special privileges.

  199. Instead, he lived a selfless,

  200. obedient life

  201. and then died a selfless,

  202. obedient death.

  203. And the worst kind of death

  204. at that,

  205. a crucifixion.

  206. Would you join me in prayer?

  207. Father, how dear it is to us

  208. that you have sent your Son to earth

  209. that we might truly get to know you

  210. and to love you

  211. and to enjoy you

  212. and to walk with you.

  213. Would you help us

  214. take a step forward

  215. in that process

  216. even now,

  217. we ask in Jesus' name.

  218. Amen.

  219. I'm a church historian,

  220. so I like to go back to the past

  221. and think about some of the great

  222. men and women

  223. who have really

  224. set the stage for us,

  225. people that we stand

  226. on the shoulders of.

  227. And one of those is

  228. the great British pastor

  229. in the 19th century,

  230. Charles Haddon Spurgeon.

  231. And at one point,

  232. he made this interesting distinction

  233. about worship.

  234. He said in worship,

  235. you know,

  236. we worship one God,

  237. but that God is both transcendent,

  238. He is above us,

  239. He's beyond us,

  240. He is in many ways

  241. different from us,

  242. and yet He's also imminent.

  243. He is the one who draws near,

  244. especially, of course,

  245. in the person of Christ

  246. who came to live among us.

  247. And then later,

  248. the Spirit of God

  249. who actually dwells in us.

  250. And this is what he said, though,

  251. that I thought was

  252. actually pretty helpful.

  253. He said, you know,

  254. when I'm in worship

  255. and I'm singing about

  256. the great transcendent God

  257. that I worship,

  258. I find my heart admiring Him,

  259. but it's only when

  260. that same transcendent God

  261. draws near

  262. that I find my heart

  263. being warmed.

  264. perhaps Spurgeon

  265. makes too sharp

  266. a distinction

  267. there,

  268. but I think

  269. there is a truth

  270. that

  271. until God

  272. came near

  273. in the person

  274. of Jesus Christ,

  275. I think it was

  276. very difficult

  277. for us really

  278. to know Him,

  279. to love Him,

  280. to enjoy Him,

  281. and to walk

  282. in relationship

  283. with Him.

  284. What I want to do

  285. for our time together

  286. is talk about

  287. the God

  288. who drew near,

  289. who actually

  290. became human.

  291. Because even though

  292. we can state

  293. in our creeds

  294. and even though

  295. we can say,

  296. yes,

  297. we believe that God

  298. is in the person

  299. of Jesus,

  300. both divine and human,

  301. and I don't

  302. really think

  303. we've thought

  304. much about

  305. the Jesus

  306. who is human.

  307. I think we have

  308. a hard time,

  309. quite frankly,

  310. believing that He

  311. was as much

  312. like us

  313. in ways,

  314. in some ways,

  315. that are kind of

  316. really interesting.

  317. This is what

  318. I think we,

  319. I think we think

  320. maybe He kind of

  321. cheated.

  322. You know,

  323. this is God

  324. after all,

  325. and I love the way

  326. one person put this.

  327. He said,

  328. when we read

  329. what we would call

  330. Jesus' more human moments,

  331. we feel like Jesus

  332. was sort of cheating.

  333. You know,

  334. with a nod and a wink,

  335. we know that really

  336. what's happened

  337. is Einstein

  338. has dropped in

  339. on a first grade

  340. math class

  341. taking the test

  342. as the genius,

  343. but just pretending

  344. not to be the genius,

  345. or Mozart

  346. playing a measure

  347. in the kindergarten

  348. flute choir.

  349. I mean,

  350. really,

  351. this is the Son of God

  352. that we're talking about,

  353. the second member

  354. of the Trinity.

  355. This is Jesus.

  356. Now,

  357. let me take it

  358. another step further

  359. and just say,

  360. here's where I think

  361. we really get mixed up

  362. and have a hard time

  363. understanding

  364. just how human

  365. Jesus was.

  366. Matthew 8,

  367. very common part

  368. of Scripture

  369. that's known

  370. to many of us.

  371. It's a story

  372. that has been preached

  373. on many,

  374. many times,

  375. but I read it

  376. anew recently,

  377. saw things in it

  378. that I hadn't been

  379. able to figure out

  380. before,

  381. and it's the story

  382. of a centurion,

  383. a soldier,

  384. a leader of soldiers

  385. who comes to Jesus.

  386. Jesus has begun

  387. to heal people,

  388. and the centurion

  389. goes up to Jesus

  390. and asks him

  391. to heal his servant

  392. back home,

  393. and Jesus says,

  394. yes,

  395. I'll do it.

  396. I'll go home with you,

  397. and the centurion says,

  398. no,

  399. no,

  400. you don't need to go

  401. under my roof.

  402. You don't need to come

  403. home with me.

  404. You just say the word,

  405. and my servant

  406. will be healed.

  407. And then,

  408. we read these words,

  409. when Jesus heard this,

  410. he was astonished.

  411. You know what that word

  412. can mean?

  413. It can mean surprised.

  414. It can mean caught off guard.

  415. I think,

  416. when we read that,

  417. we think of,

  418. well,

  419. he was deeply impressed

  420. by the man's faith,

  421. but surely not caught off guard.

  422. Let me give you another story

  423. before I circle back around.

  424. Another place in Scripture,

  425. Luke 8.

  426. Jesus, again,

  427. has begun his healing ministry already.

  428. A woman comes up from behind,

  429. a woman who has been

  430. very, very ill.

  431. No doctor has been able

  432. to help her,

  433. and she touches the garment,

  434. the fringe of Jesus' garment.

  435. And do you remember

  436. what Jesus then asks?

  437. Who touched me?

  438. Now,

  439. did he really not know

  440. who touched him?

  441. I mean,

  442. again,

  443. he's the son of God.

  444. God is omniscient.

  445. He is all-knowing.

  446. He knows things

  447. even before they happen.

  448. Well,

  449. let me answer

  450. both of these questions.

  451. Was Jesus surprised

  452. by the centurion's faith?

  453. Was he caught off guard?

  454. Yes,

  455. he was.

  456. He did not expect it.

  457. And he did not know

  458. who touched him.

  459. It wasn't just a,

  460. the setting up

  461. of a teaching moment.

  462. It was

  463. a question

  464. Jesus asked

  465. so that someone

  466. would help him know

  467. who touched him.

  468. Well,

  469. how can that be?

  470. The answer is found

  471. in the Philippians passage

  472. that we read a moment ago.

  473. And there we're told

  474. that Jesus set aside

  475. the privileges of deity

  476. or in the ESV,

  477. he made himself nothing

  478. when he became human.

  479. But here's where

  480. that's been taken wrong.

  481. Some have said,

  482. well,

  483. that means he really did

  484. lay aside his deity

  485. altogether.

  486. That is not the truth.

  487. Instead,

  488. it means that Christ

  489. chose at times

  490. in his life

  491. not to use

  492. some of the divine abilities

  493. that were available to him.

  494. And so,

  495. yes,

  496. did he have divine knowledge

  497. within reach of him?

  498. Of course he did.

  499. But he chose not to use that

  500. at times.

  501. And so,

  502. this is what's true.

  503. This is what we have

  504. to acknowledge.

  505. There were times

  506. in the life of Jesus

  507. on this earth

  508. when he shared

  509. the ignorance

  510. of the people around him.

  511. He didn't know

  512. who touched him.

  513. He was surprised

  514. by the centurion's faith.

  515. And so,

  516. here's the point.

  517. Jesus really was human.

  518. Jesus had to learn

  519. to walk.

  520. The Word of God

  521. had to learn

  522. to talk.

  523. You know,

  524. he who calls the stars

  525. by name

  526. had to learn

  527. the name of everything.

  528. Just like you and I did.

  529. This is a cup.

  530. That's a tree.

  531. We've got grandchildren.

  532. They're perfect.

  533. They're amazingly perfect.

  534. And they're having to learn.

  535. Every, you know,

  536. cow,

  537. what does the cow say?

  538. Moo.

  539. What does the cat say?

  540. Meow.

  541. I mean,

  542. that's the stage we're in.

  543. Well,

  544. Jesus had to learn

  545. just like that.

  546. Baby Jesus

  547. did not come into the world

  548. with the vocabulary

  549. of dictionary.com.

  550. And that's the God

  551. that I want to know.

  552. He's the God

  553. who would become small

  554. for my sake.

  555. He's the God

  556. who would squeeze himself

  557. into the shape

  558. of a seven-pound,

  559. four-ounce baby boy.

  560. I don't know how much

  561. he weighed,

  562. but that's what I weighed,

  563. so I'm sure it was

  564. seven pounds,

  565. four ounces.

  566. I want to know

  567. the God

  568. who would refuse

  569. the privileges of deity,

  570. the God who would become

  571. like me

  572. for me.

  573. But again,

  574. I think

  575. until we grasp

  576. just how human

  577. he is,

  578. it's very difficult

  579. to enjoy

  580. a very personal

  581. relationship

  582. with Christ.

  583. And I think

  584. one of the things

  585. that theologians

  586. have done

  587. to kind of

  588. hurt that

  589. or harm that

  590. is to throw out

  591. this big word

  592. called impassibility.

  593. And impassibility,

  594. it means something

  595. like God

  596. is not capable

  597. of emotions

  598. like joy

  599. or like grief.

  600. He's not even

  601. capable then

  602. of being affected

  603. by us.

  604. Now,

  605. they're trying

  606. to protect

  607. the God

  608. who does not change,

  609. but they've gone

  610. too far,

  611. and that is not

  612. what Scripture says.

  613. Even before God

  614. becomes human,

  615. you see in the Old Testament

  616. so many places

  617. where you see

  618. how God's heart

  619. is affected by us.

  620. Hosea 11

  621. is one of those

  622. famous outbursts

  623. of God

  624. where he cries out

  625. to his people,

  626. how can I give you up?

  627. I mean,

  628. his heart is broken

  629. over his people

  630. because they continue

  631. to sin,

  632. and yet he cannot

  633. give up on them.

  634. How can I hand you over?

  635. My heart is changed

  636. within me.

  637. All my compassion

  638. is aroused.

  639. There is

  640. something in God

  641. even before

  642. he becomes a man

  643. that accords

  644. with our human emotions.

  645. He is deeply

  646. affected by us,

  647. and that becomes

  648. patently clear

  649. when God becomes man.

  650. I mean,

  651. just think of

  652. one example.

  653. You get a sense

  654. of the humanity

  655. of Christ

  656. when his cousin,

  657. John the Baptist,

  658. is beheaded

  659. by Herod,

  660. and we read

  661. these words

  662. in Matthew 14.

  663. He withdrew

  664. after he learned,

  665. he had to be told

  666. that John the Baptist

  667. had been beheaded,

  668. he withdrew

  669. by boat

  670. privately

  671. to a solitary place.

  672. Now,

  673. why is that?

  674. Well,

  675. I agree with

  676. the person

  677. who put it this way.

  678. The man

  679. who has

  680. unceasingly

  681. offered himself

  682. to others

  683. needs to get away.

  684. He needs room

  685. to grieve

  686. just as you would.

  687. And then he goes on

  688. to say about Jesus.

  689. I cannot say

  690. this more emphatically.

  691. Life affected Jesus.

  692. And

  693. Jesus is just

  694. so much more like us

  695. than we might have imagined.

  696. And I love him

  697. all the more for it.

  698. So,

  699. when I hurt,

  700. one of the things

  701. I have learned

  702. is that Christ hurts

  703. for me

  704. and with me.

  705. And when I

  706. enjoy the good

  707. pleasures

  708. of his good creation,

  709. he takes

  710. great delight

  711. in my delight

  712. of the good gifts

  713. he's given.

  714. And when I'm

  715. discouraged,

  716. he's the one

  717. who,

  718. through his spirit,

  719. comes

  720. alongside

  721. to cheer me up.

  722. And more importantly

  723. than all of that,

  724. when in my sin

  725. and have no way out,

  726. I'm reminded

  727. that he was

  728. unwilling

  729. for me

  730. to be swallowed up

  731. by my own folly.

  732. And so he took on

  733. the unimaginable

  734. horror

  735. of a cross.

  736. And here's,

  737. again,

  738. where you have to see

  739. just how human

  740. it was for him

  741. in the moment

  742. when he went

  743. to the cross

  744. for us.

  745. He did so

  746. all by himself.

  747. There was no one

  748. there for him

  749. in the midst

  750. of his pain

  751. as he is always

  752. there for us

  753. in the midst

  754. of our pain.

  755. And again,

  756. let me go back

  757. to history.

  758. Robert Murray McShane,

  759. wonderful old

  760. Scottish pastor

  761. in the 1800s,

  762. early 19th century.

  763. He does such

  764. a good job

  765. of sharing

  766. how alone

  767. our Savior

  768. was

  769. on the cross.

  770. He said,

  771. Jesus,

  772. was without

  773. any comfort

  774. from God.

  775. Now think

  776. about that.

  777. His father,

  778. whom he had

  779. known for all

  780. eternity

  781. in perfect

  782. relationship,

  783. now he could

  784. find no feeling

  785. that God

  786. even loved him

  787. or cared about him,

  788. no feeling

  789. that he had

  790. any compassion

  791. for him,

  792. no feeling

  793. that God

  794. supported him.

  795. I mean,

  796. God was his

  797. light before,

  798. and now

  799. there was

  800. nothing

  801. for Christ

  802. on the cross

  803. but darkness.

  804. He was

  805. without God.

  806. He was

  807. as if he

  808. had no God

  809. and all

  810. that God

  811. had been

  812. to him

  813. before

  814. has now

  815. been taken

  816. from him.

  817. He had

  818. the feeling,

  819. as McShane

  820. goes on to say,

  821. of the person

  822. condemned

  823. when the judge

  824. says,

  825. depart from me,

  826. you who shall

  827. be punished

  828. with everlasting

  829. destruction.

  830. He felt

  831. that God

  832. had said

  833. the same

  834. to him.

  835. And so

  836. when we

  837. hear those

  838. words,

  839. those dreadful,

  840. terrible words

  841. on the cross,

  842. when Christ

  843. cries out

  844. to his Father,

  845. my God,

  846. my God,

  847. why have you

  848. forsaken me?

  849. He was forsaken

  850. in that moment

  851. and he felt

  852. the weight of it.

  853. But the answer

  854. to the why

  855. is that he

  856. did that for us,

  857. he did that for me,

  858. he did that for you.

  859. And see,

  860. that's the Jesus

  861. that I love

  862. and delight in.

  863. That's the Jesus

  864. I speak to

  865. as I read

  866. through the Psalms

  867. or the Jesus

  868. I cry to

  869. when I can find

  870. comfort nowhere else.

  871. This is the Jesus

  872. I turn to

  873. when I'm weak.

  874. This is the Jesus

  875. I look to

  876. for wisdom

  877. when I'm unsure.

  878. And this is the Jesus

  879. that I thank

  880. when I'm filled

  881. with joy.

  882. See,

  883. this is the Jesus

  884. who wants to be

  885. known by you

  886. and enjoyed

  887. by you.

  888. He is real

  889. and He wants

  890. to become

  891. real to you

  892. and He will

  893. if He will

  894. stop stalking Him.

  895. It is not enough

  896. to know about Him.

  897. You need to get

  898. to know Him.

  899. I'll finish with this

  900. if you're thinking,

  901. well,

  902. how do I do that?

  903. there are so many ways

  904. and so many people

  905. here could tell you

  906. ways that have helped them

  907. but I want to tell you

  908. the one thing

  909. that has been

  910. my mainstay

  911. for decades

  912. and it's something

  913. I learned in college

  914. and it's what's kept me

  915. in a real relationship

  916. with Jesus.

  917. It's the Psalms.

  918. the Psalms

  919. has become

  920. my prayer book.

  921. It became

  922. my prayer book

  923. in college

  924. and I think

  925. one of the things

  926. if you've never

  927. read through the Psalms

  928. just start at the beginning

  929. and work your way through.

  930. What you're going to see

  931. is that

  932. the authors

  933. of those Psalms

  934. express

  935. every emotion

  936. you have ever been through

  937. or will ever go through.

  938. there is joy

  939. there is pain

  940. there is grief

  941. there is anger

  942. even at God

  943. there is questioning

  944. of God

  945. which gives us

  946. permission to be

  947. real with our

  948. real God

  949. by the way.

  950. But the thing

  951. you're going to learn

  952. as you see

  953. as you read these Psalms

  954. is that the authors

  955. knew their God

  956. it was a real person

  957. speaking with a real God

  958. who eventually

  959. became one of us

  960. so that we could

  961. get to know Him

  962. and love Him

  963. and enjoy Him.

  964. Yes, learn the facts

  965. about Jesus

  966. the whole Bible

  967. is about Jesus

  968. in one way or another

  969. but turn those facts

  970. into prayers

  971. and joy

  972. and fellowship

  973. and relationship

  974. with the living God.

  975. If you want to get

  976. to know God

  977. go to the Psalms

  978. meet with Him

  979. He will meet with you

  980. and you will learn

  981. to love Him

  982. and trust Him

  983. and enjoy Him.

  984. Would you pray with me?

  985. Again, all I can say

  986. is thank you

  987. that you would

  988. become one of us

  989. so that we could

  990. know you

  991. like we know

  992. someone else.

  993. Of course,

  994. you're different

  995. and yet

  996. in many ways

  997. you're the same.

  998. Jesus, thank you

  999. that you're here with us

  1000. that you take

  1001. great delight in us

  1002. that you enjoy us

  1003. that you enjoy

  1004. spending time with us.

  1005. Lord, forgive our stalking

  1006. and would you turn

  1007. our stalking

  1008. into fellowship.

  1009. We pray

  1010. in your name.

  1011. Amen.

  1012. Amen.

  1013. Mike, thank you

  1014. for pointing us

  1015. to Jesus

  1016. and knowing Him.

  1017. When we were thinking

  1018. about this service

  1019. my first thought

  1020. is there's so much

  1021. to do this Sunday

  1022. we shouldn't do

  1023. the Lord's Supper.

  1024. immediately after that

  1025. my thought was

  1026. how can we not

  1027. do the Lord's Supper

  1028. together

  1029. celebrate together

  1030. what Mike was just

  1031. describing to us

  1032. that what we celebrate

  1033. here

  1034. is God

  1035. coming to

  1036. meet with us

  1037. giving Himself

  1038. for us.

  1039. This is the

  1040. defining chapter

  1041. in Southwood's history

  1042. not anything

  1043. that's happened

1044. in the last 30 years.

  1045. This moment

1046. where the Son of God

  1047. became man

1048. and went to a cross

  1049. for us

1050. so that we could have

  1051. relationship with Him

1052. and so that we would be

  1053. His bride

  1054. forever

  1055. because He loved us.

1056. This is what we celebrate.

  1057. This is actually

  1058. the thing that unites

  1059. all of us.

  1060. Past members

  1061. of Southwood

  1062. current members

  1063. future members

  1064. of Southwood

  1065. and people

  1066. who've never

1067. set foot in these doors

  1068. who know

  1069. and trust

  1070. their Savior

1071. and so how could we

  1072. not celebrate

  1073. that together?

  1074. Remember what

  1075. Jesus said

  1076. to His disciples.

  1077. Paul tells us

  1078. this way

1079. I received from the Lord

  1080. what I also delivered

  1081. to you

  1082. that the Lord Jesus

  1083. the night He was

  1084. betrayed

  1085. took bread

  1086. and He broke it

  1087. and gave it

  1088. to His disciples

  1089. as I am ministering

  1090. in His name

  1091. give this bread

  1092. to you.

  1093. Jesus said

  1094. take

  1095. eat

  1096. this is my body

  1097. broken for you

  1098. do this

  1099. in remembrance

  1100. of me

1101. and in the same way

  1102. He took the cup

  1103. saying

  1104. this cup

  1105. is the new covenant

  1106. in my blood

  1107. shed for many

  1108. for the forgiveness

  1109. of sins

  1110. drink from it

  1111. all of you.

  1112. This is our

  1113. joy

  1114. and privilege

  1115. to celebrate.

  1116. If you know Jesus

  1117. not

  1118. not in the way

  1119. of know about Him

  1120. but in the way

  1121. Mike was talking about

  1122. where your heart's

  1123. beginning to

  1124. love Him

  1125. where you're

  1126. desperate for Him

  1127. where there's

  1128. no one else

  1129. that can fulfill you

  1130. whether you're a member

1131. of this church or not

  1132. come

  1133. celebrate Him

  1134. with us.

  1135. If that's not

  1136. who you are

  1137. if you think

  1138. I know a lot of things

  1139. about Jesus

  1140. or maybe I'm learning

  1141. some things

  1142. but I don't really

  1143. know who He is

  1144. I don't know Him

1145. don't come to this table

  1146. but do know

  1147. you can come

  1148. we'd love to pray

  1149. with you

  1150. there's nothing

  1151. that any of us

  1152. here at this church

  1153. would rather get to

  1154. share with you

  1155. than Jesus

  1156. we'd love to talk

  1157. with you about Him

1158. you can come this morning

1159. as we come to these tables

1160. and we'll just pray with you

  1161. and we'd be delighted

1162. to be able to do that

  1163. let's pray

  1164. and we'll come

  1165. celebrate together

  1166. Jesus thank you

  1167. for giving yourself

  1168. so that we could

  1169. know you

  1170. for showing us

  1171. the glory of God

  1172. in human flesh

  1173. thank you for

  1174. this bread

  1175. and juice

1176. would you set them apart

  1177. from their common

  1178. use

  1179. for a sacred purpose

  1180. this morning

  1181. would be strengthened

  1182. in our faith

  1183. that we might know

  1184. and taste

  1185. and see

  1186. that you are good

  1187. and we might truly

  1188. know our Savior

1189. we ask in His name

  1190. for more information

  1191. visit us online

  1192. at southwood.org

  1193. you

  1194. you

  1195. you

  1196. Thank you.

  1197. Thank you.

  1198. Thank you.
