  1. You are listening to a message from Southwood Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama.

  2. Our passion is to experience and express grace. Join us.

  3. We're going to read the story of the first people who got to go tell it on the mountain

  4. that Jesus Christ was born. It's the familiar Christmas story in Luke 2. But as I read it,

  5. I want you to imagine that you got a special invitation to some huge event. The royal wedding,

  6. the national championship game, I don't know, something that would be a really big deal to you.

  7. And you'd really want to be there and you weren't even looking for an invite yet. You didn't know

  8. it was happening. You're just minding your own business. And you're the only one to get a special

  9. personal invitation to the big event. That's what happens to these shepherds. The only people

  10. other than the baby's parents to get an angelic invitation to the birth of the Messiah. As far

  11. as we know, the only people other than Mary and Joseph actually at the manger. I want us to consider

  12. their story, what the birth of Jesus means to them, and also consider through that what the birth of

  13. Jesus means to each of us, ordinary people like them. Let's read this glorious account in Luke 2,

  14. beginning at verse 8. This is the very Word of God.

  15. And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.

  16. And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they

  17. were filled with great fear. And the angel said to them, Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news

  18. of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior

  19. who is Christ the Lord. And this will be a sign for you. You will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths

  20. and lying in a manger. Suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising

  21. God and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom He is pleased.

  22. When the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, Let us go over

  23. to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened which the Lord has made known to us. And they went with

  24. haste and found Mary and Joseph and the baby lying in a manger. And when they saw it, they made known

  25. the saying that had been told them concerning this child, and all who heard it wondered at what the

  26. shepherds told them. But Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart. And the

  27. shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen as it had been told them.

  28. Let us fire God's holy word. Let's pray together.

  29. Father, thank you for your word. Would you by your spirit teach it to our hearts? Would you by your

  30. spirit mold our hearts this morning, change us, that we would not merely celebrate a season

  31. with warm and good feelings, but that we would celebrate a Savior with hope and joy?

  32. Would you do that work in our hearts? Would you speak to us by your word? In Jesus' name, amen.

  33. Amen.

  34. Most of us aren't experts on shepherds, so let me give you a little window into their world to help us

  35. appreciate how the birth of Jesus would have impacted them. Shepherds in this culture were in some ways

  36. ordinary blue-collar folk. They were certainly not the upper crust of society or particularly influential

  37. in the town. In fact, they were the black sheep of Jewish society, pardon the pun. Often despised in the

  38. community, thought of as thieves, so mistrusted, in fact, that they weren't even allowed to be legal

  39. witnesses. That's who shepherds were. Perhaps the ones who looked down on them the most and made them feel

  40. the most like outsiders were the religious types. The religious churchy people made sure the

  41. the shepherds felt unworthy because they weren't in worship very often. You didn't find them at the temple

  42. much. With their crazy work schedules, long distances they had to cover, the fact they were at times

  43. ceremonially unclean from the animals or dead things they came in contact with. They were usually absent

  44. from worship. We may think of them as as sweet characters around the manger, but but nobody else thought of

  45. them that way. Everyone, themselves included, I suspect, would have been surprised, shocked to hear or read that

  46. the local shepherds were by the end of this story leading the community in glorifying God, announcing

  47. the good news of the Messiah coming to save God's people. But that's exactly what happens, isn't it?

  48. God often has the most special plans for the most unsuspecting people as we already saw with Rae.

  49. So the shepherds will show us this morning a special view of Christmas. Will show us Christmas means

  50. good news that must be celebrated and must be shared. Let's start with the first part of that.

  51. What's the good news that is worth celebrating? Something causes these shepherds who are out with

  52. their flocks by night to get really excited. But first, it scares them. An angel shows up and verse 9 says,

  53. they are filled with great fear. They were sore afraid, another translation says. Now likely, these shepherds

  54. would have known enough to know that when an angel shows up, it's either really good or really bad.

  55. And these shepherds certainly knew enough to know that if an angel was showing up to them,

  56. it was really bad, right? No chance was an angel showing up to them anything good. And so they're

  57. reasonably terrified. Well, what's going on? What's happening? But by the end of the story,

  58. verse 20 says, they're not terrified anymore. They're glorifying and praising God. They're excited.

  59. They're thrilled. They praise God. What happened? What did he tell them? He says to these fearful shepherds,

  60. fear not. I understand why you're afraid. Don't be afraid. I've got good news. It's of great joy.

  61. It's something worth celebrating. What's the content of the good news that they celebrate? What could an

  62. angel bring to these shepherds that would tell them they should celebrate? Look at verse 10.

  63. Good news of great joy that will be for all the people unto you is born this day in the city of David

  64. David. A savior who is Christ the Lord, a savior. Christ the Lord, the Messiah. Look, even the shepherds knew

  65. who that was, right? This is the one we've all been waiting for, the promised one, the anointed one.

  66. We've waited centuries and and now he's here. Are you serious?

  67. That's the first angle the shepherds get on the good news. A savior. In other words,

  68. God is making rebels his children. Now that's good news for rebels. And if you don't think of yourself

  69. as a rebel, maybe that's not really the personality type you have or how you usually think of yourself.

  70. Remember last week we saw that every time we sin, we're picking up our swords and waging war against

  71. the king. We think we'd do better on his throne. Rebels, consider your own heart and life for just a

  72. minute. Do you wake up every day thinking, I wonder what God wants me to do today?

  73. Do you ever consider your own needs ahead of others? Do you ever struggle to love even the people you picked

  74. to love? Do you ever do something just to look good to others, just to impress someone else, to avoid getting

  75. caught and punished? See, even the even the rule followers among us have hearts that rebel against the king.

  76. When we're honest about our hearts, we feel the same way the shepherds would have about being in the presence of God.

  77. Not me. I don't deserve to be there.

  78. The Bible's right, isn't it, when it says we are sinful from birth. There is no one righteous.

  79. By nature, we are all hostile to God. We are bent towards ourselves and what we want and away from God and what

  80. He's designed us for. We desperately need a Savior.

  81. And that's exactly what God sends. A Savior. While we were yet sinners, the Messiah came to die for us.

  82. At just the right time, God sent His Son so that rebels might become His sons.

  83. It's the good news of Christmas that causes these shepherds to do backflips.

  84. I mean, I made that detail up, but they're praising God. They're really excited.

  85. They're celebrating His goodness and grace. A Savior. God makes rebels His children.

  86. Chai Sun knew what it meant to be a rebel. He was part of a communist rebel

  87. militia group in Korea after World War II. He hated Christians. In 1948, he killed two sons of a local

  88. pastor in an uprising. But soon afterwards, the communist uprising was put down and troops from

  89. the National Army came in to execute justice, to mete out punishments on these rebels. Chai Sun

  90. rightfully expected he was facing death. Until Pastor Sun, the father of the two boys he had killed,

  91. stepped in. He pleaded with the military court to forgive Chai Sun. The court at first refused, but

  92. finally, the court consented when Pastor Sun offered to adopt the rebel in the place of his two murdered sons.

  93. When Pastor Sun finally saw Chai Sun, he said to him,

  94. Don't worry, I have already forgiven you, and God is longing to forgive you too.

  95. It wasn't long before Chai Sun experienced forgiveness of sins and adoption as a son from his heavenly father. He became a Christian like his new father.

  96. From rebel to son, twice. That's such good news.

  97. But then the one angel is actually joined by something that I think would be a lot scarier than just one brilliant messenger of light.

  98. There's a whole host of them, an army of angels. To add more to the message, verse 14,

  99. Glory to God in the highest, they're singing.

  100. And on earth, peace among those with whom he is pleased.

  101. They've got a message.

  102. There's glory in heaven and there's news for earth.

  103. I wonder what it will be.

  104. The armies of heaven, of the glorious God,

  105. declare not war,

  106. but peace.

  107. An announcement, not that God has found some men of goodwill on earth

  108. who deserve for God to make peace with them,

  109. but rather that God has declared peace toward men currently hostile and warring against him.

  110. My enemies will be my friends, God says.

  111. Hey, that's us, right?

  112. The shepherds knew it.

  113. He's talking to us.

  114. What a glorious reality.

  115. Do you know that?

  116. That's you and me?

  117. And the holy God of the universe,

  118. at the point of his highest and greatest glory,

  119. does not wait for us to earn our way back up to him.

  120. That's not what he does.

  121. Instead, he brings us back to himself.

  122. It's the same message of grace from another angle

  123. for restless, fearful, peace-lacking people.

  124. People who scramble around trying to have a good enough life,

  125. to have a good enough family,

  126. to have a good enough Christmas this year,

  127. frantically trying to be good enough

  128. just to keep God appeased,

  129. keep him from doing anything bad to me,

  130. to make me not have to think about him.

  131. And God shows up to those people and says,

  132. Enough!

  133. Peace!

  134. And God sends hosts of angels

  135. to announce it to shepherds

  136. who would never have believed it otherwise.

  137. Listen, shepherds.

  138. A Savior has been born

  139. to you

  140. I don't want you to miss it.

  141. I want you to know

  142. beyond a shadow of a doubt

  143. that God is speaking good news

  144. to you.

  145. This will be a sign to you.

  146. How many people

  147. was the baby

  148. wrapped in swaddling cloths

  149. and lying in a manger

  150. a sign for?

  151. As far as we know,

  152. just for a few shepherds,

  153. it was a sign

  154. to them.

  155. A sign just for them

  156. from their God

  157. who wanted to make sure

  158. the outcast, rebel,

  159. undeserving shepherds

  160. knew they were welcomed

  161. in His family.

  162. That's the personal part

  163. of Christmas

  164. that I'm so glad

  165. I get to share

  166. with you this morning.

  167. If you've never heard it

  168. that way before,

  169. Jesus is born

  170. for you.

  171. Specifically,

  172. to save you.

  173. Especially,

  174. to rescue you.

  175. Can you even

  176. comprehend that?

  177. Can you imagine

  178. the God of the universe

  179. thinking that way

  180. about you?

  181. I read the story

  182. recently of a young

  183. Filipino man

  184. named Timothy.

  185. Timothy grew up

  186. in deep poverty

  187. without much at all,

  188. but he had received

  189. letters

  190. and gifts

  191. and prayers

  192. from a man

  193. he had never met

  194. and knew only

  195. as George Walker.

  196. It wasn't until

  197. Timothy was 17

  198. that he learned

  199. the man

  200. who had been

  201. sending him

  202. all of these things

  203. so regularly

  204. was actually

  205. named George

  206. Herbert Walker Bush.

  207. Then the former

  208. President of the

  209. United States.

  210. The Compassion

  211. International staffer

  212. who had connected

  213. them and finally

  214. told Timothy

  215. who it was,

  216. said Timothy

  217. was dumbfounded,

  218. speechless.

  219. Timothy said,

  220. well, I knew

  221. he was a kind

  222. and encouraging,

  223. wonderful man,

  224. but I had no idea.

  225. And they write,

  226. to a child in poverty,

  227. it's amazing enough

  228. that anyone

  229. would care about them,

  230. but it was beyond

  231. his wildest imagination

  232. and even his ability

  233. to comprehend

  234. that the President

  235. of the United States

  236. knew his name.

  237. Dear friends,

  238. new friends,

  239. new friends

  240. that I've never

  241. met before.

  242. The God

  243. of the universe

  244. knows

  245. your name.

  246. And more than that,

  247. he cares

  248. for you.

  249. He has

  250. been

  251. caring

  252. for you

  253. since you were

  254. young.

  255. Can you believe

  256. that?

  257. you who have

  258. run from him,

  259. you who have

  260. pretended to know

  261. him but failed

  262. him so many times,

  263. you who have

  264. felt fearful

  265. even this morning

  266. at the idea

  267. of coming to a

  268. place like this,

  269. that if there

  270. even is a God,

  271. he certainly

  272. has no

  273. kind feelings

  274. towards me.

  275. He's certainly

  276. out to get me

  277. rather than

  278. out to help me.

  279. I know that's

  280. what I would

  281. deserve if

  282. he's even

  283. there.

  284. And the

  285. good news

  286. is he is

  287. and he cares

  288. for you.

  289. He knows

  290. your name

  291. and it's not

  292. something that

  293. should make

  294. you run

  295. away.

  296. He's welcoming

  297. you in.

  298. He sent

  299. his son

  300. so that he

  301. can

  302. welcome you

  303. home.

  304. He cares

  305. so much

  306. that he sent

  307. his son

  308. to save you,

  309. to make you

  310. his friend,

  311. even to adopt

  312. you as his

  313. son.

  314. Peace.

  315. Will you

  316. embrace him

  317. in that peace?

  318. Rejoice.

  319. Good news.

  320. Great joy.

  321. Trust Jesus.

  322. Rest.

  323. Finally.

  324. Praise God

  325. for good news

  326. of great joy

  327. for you.

  328. Can you

  329. imagine

  330. Timothy

  331. keeping

  332. the news

  333. of the

  334. President

  335. of the

  336. United

  337. States

  338. being his

  339. friend

  340. to himself?

  341. No way,

  342. right?

  343. This is

  344. something I

  345. gotta tell

  346. my friends.

  347. I gotta tell

  348. everybody.

  349. It was too

  350. marvelous to

  351. contain,

  352. I'm sure.

  353. The shepherds

  354. had an even

  355. more marvelous

  356. story to tell.

  357. The angels

  358. depart.

  359. The shepherds

  360. run to

  361. Bethlehem,

  362. find the

  363. baby,

  364. and immediately

  365. what do they

  366. do?

  367. They start

  368. talking.

  369. Apparently,

  370. to any and

  371. everyone who

  372. will listen

  373. to him.

  374. Verse 17,

  375. when they

  376. saw it,

  377. they made

  378. known the

  379. saying that

  380. had been

  381. told them

  382. concerning

  383. this child,

  384. and all

  385. who heard

  386. it wondered

  387. at what

  388. the shepherds

  389. told them.

  390. All who

  391. heard it,

  392. apparently

  393. no small

  394. number of

  395. people that

  396. they found,

  397. all of

  398. them were

  399. amazed,

  400. marveled.

  401. It's what

  402. it means,

  403. wondered.

  404. At what?

  405. What did

  406. they say?

  407. What did

  408. the shepherds

  409. share with

  410. them?

  411. The saying

  412. that had

  413. been told

  414. them about

  415. the child.

  416. What was

  417. that?

  418. That the

  419. baby was

  420. the Messiah,

  421. the Savior.

  422. Wow!

  423. Wow!

  424. Angels announce

  425. it to

  426. them,

  427. and now

  428. they announce

  429. it to

  430. everyone else.

  431. Have you

  432. ever thought

  433. before how

  434. odd that is?

  435. How strange

  436. it is that

  437. God puts

  438. shepherds,

  439. rather than

  440. Bible teachers,

  441. in this

  442. position to

  443. make this

  444. announcement.

  445. Put yourself

  446. in the shoes

  447. of the people

  448. hearing from

  449. them,

  450. maybe good

  451. faithful Jews

  452. waiting for

  453. the Messiah,

  454. hundreds of

  455. years waiting,

  456. and now I'm

  457. hearing about

  458. this good

  459. news from

  460. them?

  461. I don't

  462. know.

  463. That doesn't

  464. seem likely.

  465. Do you realize

  466. apparently it's

  467. not a negative

  468. thing to God

  469. that those

  470. announcing the

  471. good news of

  472. the Messiah's

  473. birth are

  474. scoundrels?

  475. People that

  476. others look

  477. down on and

  478. don't see as

  479. great success

  480. stories,

  481. paragons of

  482. virtue?

  483. In fact,

  484. His choice

  485. of the

  486. shepherds

  487. first seems

  488. to underscore

  489. that this is

  490. good news of

  491. great joy for

  492. all people.

  493. Maybe God

  494. knew that the

  495. shepherds would

  496. joyfully share

  497. the good news

  498. of the birth

  499. of the Savior

  500. because they

  501. knew how

  502. desperately they

  503. needed one.

  504. That would

  505. fit with what

  506. God often seems

  507. to do in

  508. sending out

  509. needy people

  510. to tell

  511. others of

  512. how God

  513. has met

  514. their needs.

  515. Needy

  516. messengers

  517. from cover

  518. to cover

  519. in this book.

  520. If you haven't

  521. read it,

  522. that describes

  523. all of them.

  524. So if you feel

  525. you're not good

  526. enough to

  527. represent Jesus

  528. to others,

  529. welcome to

  530. the club.

  531. He puts

  532. the best

  533. news ever

  534. in jars

  535. of clay.

  536. Weak,

  537. broken

  538. vessels

  539. like you

  540. and me.

  541. Young

  542. kids

  543. that somewhat

  544. overlook.

  545. Elderly

  546. people

  547. leaning on

  548. walkers.

  549. Sinful,

  550. unimpressive

  551. pastors.

  552. church.

  553. And God

  554. wants us

  555. to share

  556. this news

  557. so that it

  558. will be very

  559. clear who the

  560. Savior is.

  561. Right?

  562. Not you,

  563. not me.

  564. Who the

  565. glorious one

  566. is,

  567. who the

  568. strong one

  569. is.

  570. These

  571. outcast

  572. shepherds

  573. realize the

  574. marvelous,

  575. critical

  576. truth that

  577. the message

  578. of Christmas

  579. is a message

  580. that must

  581. be spread.

  582. In that

  583. regard,

  584. I feel like

  585. they may be

  586. ahead of us

  587. many days.

  588. This is really

  589. where God

  590. has convicted

  591. me this

  592. week.

  593. I love

  594. celebrating

  595. the good

  596. news of

  597. Christmas.

  598. But the

  599. Spirit has

  600. been saying

  601. to my

  602. heart,

  603. you celebrate

  604. Christmas

  605. like it's

  606. worth sharing.

  607. But you

  608. share about

  609. Christmas

  610. like it's

  611. not worth

  612. celebrating.

  613. Is that

  614. ever true

  615. for you?

  616. Do you

  617. celebrate

  618. Christmas

  619. like it's

  620. worth sharing

  621. but share

  622. about Christmas

  623. like it's

  624. not worth

  625. celebrating?

  626. Would your

  627. unbelieving

  628. family member

  629. be fair in

  630. assuming the

  631. birth of

  632. Jesus is

  633. really not

  634. that big a

  635. deal?

  636. If you went

  637. the tenth

  638. straight Christmas

  639. together without

  640. mentioning Jesus

  641. at all?

  642. No.

  643. Does it

  644. really make

  645. sense to

  646. come to

  647. special services

  648. to shop

  649. and buy

  650. all these

  651. presents

  652. and wear

  653. yourself out

  654. celebrating

  655. for an

  656. entire month

  657. something that

  658. you won't

  659. walk across

  660. the driveway

  661. or the

  662. hallway to

  663. talk to

  664. your neighbor

  665. about the

  666. other eleven

  667. months?

  668. It doesn't

  669. make sense

  670. though.

  671. Is it

  672. really good

  673. news or

  674. not?

  675. Shepherds

  676. didn't have

  677. to think

  678. twice did

  679. they?

  680. It just

  681. made sense.

  682. Good news

  683. like this

  684. must be

  685. shared.

  686. Sometimes I

  687. think we

  688. forget how

  689. much we

  690. need it

  691. and we

  692. need to

  693. slow down

  694. and experience

  695. God's grace

  696. again for

  697. ourselves so

  698. that we

  699. celebrate it

  700. as we

  701. should.

  702. Sometimes we

  703. forget how

  704. much others

  705. need it

  706. and we

  707. need to

  708. express

  709. God's

  710. grace to

  711. them so

  712. that they

  713. can celebrate

  714. with us.

  715. We talk

  716. about experience

  717. and express

  718. grace around

  719. here a lot.

  720. It's our

  721. mission.

  722. Experience

  723. and express

  724. grace.

  725. But do we

  726. talk about

  727. that with

  728. each other

  729. more than

  730. we talk

  731. about the

  732. grace,

  733. the Savior

  734. himself

  735. with others?

  736. It must

  737. be both.

  738. love.

  739. The message

  740. of Christmas

  741. we've been

  742. talking about

  743. is one that

  744. we ourselves,

  745. our loved

  746. ones, our

  747. neighbors in

  748. this world

  749. desperately

  750. need.

  751. I've shared

  752. with you

  753. before about

  754. the disease

  755. that I made

  756. up.

  757. It's called

  758. Irish Dalmatian

  759. rhinitis.

  760. It's where

  761. your nose

  762. swells up and

  763. is covered

  764. with green

  765. spots.

  766. Irish

  767. Dalmatian

  768. rhinitis.

  769. If you

  770. saw that a

  771. cure for

  772. that disease

  773. were discovered,

  774. it wouldn't

  775. make you

  776. jump up or

  777. run for joy

  778. to tell

  779. someone about

  780. it, would

  781. it?

  782. Because neither

  783. you nor

  784. anyone you

  785. love suffers

  786. from this

  787. disease and

  788. needs this

  789. cure.

  790. I know

  791. because I

  792. made it

  793. up.

  794. It's not

  795. good news

  796. of great

  797. joy to

  798. you.

  799. But we

  800. absolutely

  801. share with

  802. others something

  803. that is

  804. celebratory good

  805. news, don't

  806. we?

  807. We never

  808. miss a

  809. chance it

  810. seems.

  811. When

  812. Clemson

  813. wins the

  814. national

  815. championship

  816. this year,

  817. sorry, if,

  818. I should

  819. still say

  820. if, Clemson

  821. wins, I

  822. will celebrate

  823. with others

  824. who are also

  825. excited.

  826. All the

  827. Clemson and

  828. Auburn fans

  829. that I

  830. know will

  831. celebrate

  832. together.

  833. We do

  834. that naturally.

  835. Imagine you're

  836. scrolling through

  837. Facebook and

  838. you see a

  839. recipe, a

  840. video, a

  841. news story or

  842. something that

  843. you like and

  844. you click

  845. like.

  846. You do

  847. that a

  848. lot.

  849. But then

  850. sometimes you

  851. see something

  852. you know many

  853. of your friends

  854. will enjoy or

  855. benefit from it.

  856. It tasted so

  857. good and they

  858. love chocolate.

  859. It encouraged

  860. you so much and

  861. you know others

  862. who are hurting.

  863. And you click

  864. share because

  865. everyone else

  866. needs to know

  867. too, right?

  868. Christmas is

  869. that kind of

  870. good news.

  871. In case you

  872. forgot.

  873. It's that kind

  874. of story.

  875. One that

  876. must be

  877. shared.

  878. It is, after

  879. all, the

  880. angel says,

  881. good news of

  882. great joy for

  883. whom?

  884. All

  885. people.

  886. Celebratory

  887. good news

  888. for everyone.

  889. See, Christmas

  890. is universal

  891. because the

  892. need for a

  893. Savior, for

  894. peace with

  895. God, for

  896. good news of

  897. great joy is

  898. universal.

  899. Christmas is

  900. very personal.

  901. But as we

  902. consider people

  903. personally,

  904. consider your

  905. friends and

  906. neighbors for

  907. just a minute

  908. as we close.

  909. Our disease is

  910. no joke.

  911. is eternally

  912. serious.

  913. And living in

  914. a nice

  915. neighborhood in

  916. Huntsville does

  917. not cure it.

  918. It just

  919. masks it

  920. sometimes.

  921. We live in a

  922. world full of

  923. people desperately

  924. searching for

  925. peace.

  926. Is there

  927. anyone this

  928. time of year

  929. not feeling at

  930. least some of

  931. the stress and

  932. strain of this

  933. life?

  934. Perhaps they're

  935. searching for it

  936. in other people,

  937. professional success

  938. in a controlled

  939. life, but

  940. not finding what

  941. they're ultimately

  942. searching for

  943. there.

  944. And God has

  945. given to us

  946. good news

  947. of great joy,

  948. the way of

  949. peace,

  950. the child

  951. of peace,

  952. the prince

  953. of peace.

  954. We must

  955. share that.

  956. We live in a

  957. world wracked

  958. by fears,

  959. grief,

  960. anxiety,

  961. depression.

  962. It's

  963. overwhelming

  964. often.

  965. We're

  966. increasingly

  967. unable to

  968. manage the

  969. pains and

  970. difficulties of

  971. life.

  972. You have

  973. neighbors

  974. overwhelmed by

  975. a sense of

  976. loneliness, a

  977. fear of

  978. failure.

  979. It's masked

  980. by workaholism,

  981. materialism,

  982. suburban

  983. isolation,

  984. any number of

  985. things, but

  986. God has given

  987. to us good

  988. news of

  989. great joy.

  990. He has been

  991. born in our

  992. world.

  993. Emmanuel,

  994. God with

  995. us in our

  996. lowest points,

  997. in our

  998. darkest places,

  999. God has

  1000. come in.

  1001. We must

  1002. share that.

  1003. God has

  1004. been

  1005. perhaps most

  1006. importantly,

  1007. we live in a

  1008. world full of

  1009. people tormented

  1010. by guilt,

  1011. not having lived

  1012. up to their own

  1013. standards, even if

  1014. they're unaware of

  1015. God's.

  1016. Many sitting in

  1017. pews like these

  1018. and worrying

  1019. they've failed

  1020. God, not done

  1021. enough, been

  1022. pretending to be

  1023. okay so long

  1024. they're exhausted.

  1025. Maybe you know

  1026. that feeling.

  1027. And according

  1028. to God's

  1029. word, everyone

  1030. not feeling

  1031. that is

  1032. ignoring the

  1033. reality of

  1034. their guilt

  1035. before a

  1036. holy God,

  1037. seeking to be

  1038. enough on their

  1039. own, pretending

  1040. there's no

  1041. eternal problem,

  1042. and in fact

  1043. there is.

  1044. And God has

  1045. given us good

  1046. news of

  1047. great joy,

  1048. of Savior,

  1049. Savior for

  1050. people just

  1051. like you and

  1052. me and

  1053. them.

  1054. Jesus, who

  1055. removes our

  1056. guilt and

  1057. restores us to

  1058. our Father.

  1059. Good news of

  1060. great joy for

  1061. all people.

  1062. We must share

  1063. that.

  1064. that.

  1065. If you've

  1066. ever really

  1067. celebrated

  1068. Christmas, really

  1069. found your

  1070. heart overwhelmed

  1071. with the joy of

  1072. a Savior being

  1073. born to you,

  1074. then know for

  1075. certain that

  1076. everyone you

  1077. know needs

  1078. that same

  1079. Savior and

  1080. can taste that

  1081. same joy.

  1082. And what a

  1083. joy to share

  1084. with them what

  1085. has brought you

  1086. such great joy.

  1087. Let's pray.

  1088. Jesus, your

  1089. coming is

  1090. indeed good

  1091. news of

  1092. great joy.

  1093. And I pray

  1094. first that we

  1095. would see it

  1096. for ourselves

  1097. in a fresh

  1098. way.

  1099. We forget

  1100. in the

  1101. busyness what

  1102. great news

  1103. your love

  1104. and your

  1105. birth and

  1106. your death

  1107. and your

  1108. resurrection

  1109. are for us.

  1110. And then

  1111. might you

  1112. not be able

  1113. to contain

  1114. us.

  1115. Might the

  1116. joy of

  1117. our salvation,

  1118. the relief

  1119. of a Savior

  1120. who has

  1121. rescued me

  1122. and given

  1123. me rest

  1124. be something

  1125. we're so

  1126. eager to

  1127. share with

  1128. others.

  1129. We're weak

  1130. and needy

  1131. like the

  1132. shepherds.

  1133. we won't

  1134. be able to

  1135. impress them

  1136. with stories

  1137. of our

  1138. goodness but

  1139. we can tell

  1140. them about

  1141. you,

  1142. about a

  1143. Savior,

  1144. Christ the

  1145. Lord.

  1146. Give us joy

  1147. in that even

  1148. today and this

  1149. Christmas we

  1150. ask in his

  1151. name.

  1152. Amen.

  1153. Amen.
