  1. You are listening to a message from Southwood Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama.

  2. Our passion is to experience and express grace. Join us.

  3. I love this service. I love getting to celebrate Christmas with you.

  4. I want you to know tonight that a homily is a 17-minute sermon, so you can plan accordingly.

  5. I also want you to know this Christmas Eve homily is brought to you by Rudolph, not the red-nosed reindeer,

  6. but Rudolph, a big, soft-spoken, tender-hearted African-American man on our facilities team whom I greatly respect.

  7. Rudolph came into my office this weekend while I was working on this message and said,

  8. You're probably making it too hard. It's Christmas. Just relax and keep it simple.

  9. I said, like, Jesus loves me? He winked. Yeah, like that.

  10. He declined my offer to preach tonight, but that's what I want you to hear as we look at God's Word together.

  11. Here at Southwood, we've been talking this Christmas season about what Christmas means on a personal level.

  12. We've been seeing that through the eyes of those involved in the story of the first Christmas, those who were there.

  13. We've noted each of them, while they have their own individual perspectives, each of them is focused on Jesus.

  14. Mary helped us see that Christmas means God's grace in Jesus reaching down to the most undeserving.

  15. Joseph helped us see how Jesus interrupts our lives and, as He does so, meets our biggest need to save us from our sins.

  16. Herod and the wise men helped us realize that the birth of Jesus means that the true King has invaded this world.

  17. And we must respond to that by either taking up our swords against Him or by laying our swords down before Him.

  18. Then yesterday, the shepherds helped us see how the birth of Jesus is good news that must be celebrated and shared.

  19. See, for all of these people that we know so well from our nativity scenes and Advent stories,

  20. that the story of Christmas was more than just a warm, fuzzy feeling, a sentimental tradition.

  21. It was a life-changing reality.

  22. The birth of Jesus changed everything for them.

  23. And tonight, I want us very simply to see through the eyes of the baby in the manger Himself

  24. that Jesus wants the same for you this Christmas.

  25. He wants you to realize that there's not just a warm feeling and tradition and sentiment,

  26. but that there's a life-changing gift for you.

  27. A gift He willingly gives you at great cost to Himself.

  28. That's the essence of Christmas.

  29. I'm not talking about psychoanalyzing the God-man baby in the manger,

  30. what did the baby know or not know.

  31. That's not what we're going to do tonight.

  32. But rather considering what Jesus, the Son of God, believed was going on in that first Christmas.

  33. Why He came and what that tells us about what we celebrate at Christmas.

  34. Some of you have come a long way to be here tonight, not to hear me preach,

  35. but to be with family and friends for Christmas.

  36. Doesn't it mean so much when people give up so much in order to be with you?

  37. One Christmas when we were much younger and able to do this,

  38. Christy and I drove ten hours through the night just to be with her parents and surprise them for Christmas.

  39. Why?

  40. Why would we do that?

  41. Because we love them.

  42. Isn't that what you feel when someone considers the cost of being with you

  43. and then willingly pays that cost?

  44. Forfeits the time, sleep, money, comfort, even perhaps sanity,

  45. depending on the state of your house around Christmas.

  46. And they consider that and they come to be with you.

  47. You realize, among other things, how valuable you are to them, how much they love you.

  48. And tonight I simply want you to hear again what you or your children have sung many times before.

  49. Jesus loves me.

  50. Jesus loves you.

  51. He sacrifices more than we can understand

  52. to give us a gift whose value we can only begin to appreciate.

  53. The Bible talks a lot about the reasons Jesus comes to be born.

  54. It certainly mentions that He came because the Father sent Him

  55. and He delights to do the Father's will.

  56. It mentions He came to live a perfect life,

  57. to reflect perfectly the glorious image of our Heavenly Father to us

  58. so we would know what He's like.

  59. It mentions that He came to teach us about God.

  60. But the overwhelming emphasis of Jesus Himself

  61. and the rest of the Bible as it talks about Him

  62. is that what was on Jesus' heart in coming to be born in the manger

  63. was another piece of wood, a cross.

  64. God so loved the world that He gave His only Son.

  65. And Jesus so loves you that He came willingly, eagerly,

  66. fully aware that He was coming to die in your place.

  67. He says so Himself in Mark chapter 10.

    Mark 10 chapter mention

  68. For even the Son of Man came not to be served,

  69. but to serve and to give His life as a ransom for many.

  70. He says again in Luke 19,

  71. the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.

  72. Jesus says things like these over and over.

  73. He knows even more deeply what everyone else in the stable is learning,

  74. that He has given life to give His life.

  75. Consider these other passages printed in your bulletin tonight.

  76. These are just a few of the ways the Bible tells us,

  77. before I ran out of space,

  78. what Christmas means to Jesus,

  79. what He's doing when He's born on Christmas.

  80. Matthew 1,

  81. Mary will bear a son and you shall call His name Jesus.

  82. What's He going to do?

  83. For He will save His people from their sins.

  84. John 1,

  85. Who is this Jesus?

  86. Behold the Lamb of God

  87. who takes away the sin of the world.

  88. A sacrifice to cover sins.

  89. Galatians 4,

  90. When the fullness of time had come,

  91. God sent His Son,

  92. born of woman,

  93. born under the law,

  94. born, why?

  95. To redeem those who were under the law

  96. so that we might receive adoption as sons of God.

  97. To pay the price is what that means.

  98. To buy us back,

  99. to give us the gift of adoption as God's sons.

  100. Philippians 2,

  101. Jesus, though He was in the form of God,

  102. did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped,

  103. something to be held on to.

  104. But He emptied Himself

  105. by taking the form of a servant,

  106. being born in the likeness of men.

  107. And He humbled Himself

  108. by becoming obedient to death on a cross.

  109. He had so much comfort,

  110. privilege,

  111. wealth.

  112. He had so much of it

  113. and He thought and considered,

  114. should I hang on to these things?

  115. Should I grasp them?

  116. And He thought,

  117. no way.

  118. I'll give those up

  119. to come and be born

  120. and die for them.

  121. To give them life,

  122. righteousness,

  123. relationship that they couldn't deserve,

  124. that they could never earn.

  125. There's no greater love than that.

  126. That's grace that Jesus counted the cost

  127. and then came for you.

  128. Is that starting to hit home for you?

  129. I know you've heard these things before.

  130. It's not new information,

  131. but that that's what happens at Christmas,

  132. that Jesus comes for you.

  133. Certainly the testimony of Scripture

  134. allows Paul confidently to say,

  135. this saying is trustworthy

  136. and deserving of full acceptance

  137. that Christ Jesus came into the world.

  138. Why?

  139. To save sinners

  140. of whom I am the foremost.

  141. He came to the manger

  142. to go to the cross.

  143. Not to be surprised later

  144. by the betrayal of mankind,

  145. by the separation from His Father

  146. that He endured,

  147. by the suffering and pain of the cross.

  148. No.

  149. He came with His eyes wide open

  150. to the enormous cost

  151. that He would pay.

  152. He came for you.

  153. He became flesh.

  154. He was born to die.

  155. The great pastor of the last century,

  156. James Montgomery Boyce,

  157. said it this way of Christmas.

  158. The story is treated quite simply in Scripture

  159. and the emphasis is always on the fact

  160. that Jesus came to die.

  161. The Lord Jesus Christ,

  162. the eternal Son of God,

  163. took a human body in order

  164. that He might die for our salvation.

  165. As He came into the world,

  166. our Lord had His mind on His great purpose

  167. to provide salvation for the race.

  168. But not only did He have the purpose in mind,

  169. He also was aware

  170. that He was perfectly suited

  171. by virtue of who He was.

  172. Unlike anybody else who has ever been born,

  173. He was not only man,

  174. He was God as well.

  175. Therefore, while as a man

  176. He could die upon the cross,

  177. as God He died

  178. in order to pay the infinite price

  179. necessary for salvation.

  180. In other words,

  181. Jesus knew human flesh

  182. had to be divinely perfect.

  183. And He knew that the wages of sin,

  184. death,

  185. had to be paid at an infinite level.

  186. And He loved you so much

  187. and knew you couldn't do it.

  188. So He moved heaven and earth

  189. to come and be born

  190. and live and die for you.

  191. For the joy set before Him,

  192. the joy of being with you

  193. in glorious praise

  194. of the Father's costly,

  195. sacrificial grace forever.

  196. With that joy before Him,

  197. He endured the cross.

  198. Oh, how He loves you.

  199. One Christmas Eve a few years ago

  200. was Barbie Jeep night for me.

  201. You may have had a Christmas Eve like this.

  202. We were really worked up about it.

  203. First, because we knew our girls

  204. were going to be so excited

  205. to get this gift the next morning.

  206. And also because several of you

  207. had told us

  208. that it took you quite a while

  209. to put a Barbie Jeep together.

  210. We knew if it took you quite a while,

  211. it would take me a long, long while

  212. to put it together.

  213. So, knowing that,

  214. I gave up a peaceful cup of cocoa

  215. by the fire with my wife,

  216. which I really would have enjoyed,

  217. and rushed after this service

  218. to the shed of my next-door neighbor

  219. and got the box out

  220. and spent the next several hours

  221. on the cold, hard floor of the garage

  222. trying to put together a Barbie Jeep,

  223. following careful instructions

  224. step by step.

  225. It wasn't cheap.

  226. It took a fair amount of time

  227. and effort to keep it secret,

  228. but the late-night construction

  229. was by far the most costly part for me.

  230. I was running on adrenaline, however,

  231. to get this perfect special gift

  232. put together for our beloved girls

  233. we were so excited to share it with.

  234. By the end of the process,

  235. I was sore and tired.

  236. Christy had to stick on all the decals

  237. because my arms were shaking,

  238. my eyes were blurry,

  239. I couldn't even put a sticker

  240. on the plastic.

  241. She did all of that.

  242. We hardly slept that night,

  243. and some of you may have that

  244. to look forward to tonight.

  245. But it was so worth it

  246. because of their excitement

  247. on Christmas morning.

  248. I tell you about the Barbie Jeep

  249. simply to say this.

  250. You know what that feels like.

  251. Willingly, eagerly, excitedly

  252. to plan and pay and sacrifice

  253. to give your kids or someone else

  254. a special gift.

  255. And Jesus says this,

  256. If you who are evil

  257. know how to give good gifts

  258. to your children,

  259. how much more

  260. will your heavenly Father

  261. give good gifts to you?

  262. If you have any joy

  263. watching a child open a present

  264. tomorrow morning,

  265. remember that God Himself

  266. delights even more

  267. in giving His Son,

  268. giving that gift,

  269. His righteousness,

  270. eternal life to you.

  271. when you give or receive

  272. a costly gift tomorrow,

  273. remember Christmas

  274. delights God

  275. because He willingly,

  276. eagerly gives His Son,

  277. who willingly, eagerly

  278. gives His life for you

  279. that you may know Him,

  280. you may be with Him forever.

  281. Jesus loves you.

  282. The angels sang it.

  283. The incarnation shouts it.

  284. And this table

  285. that we come to together tonight

  286. repeats it for you

  287. so that you will remember it

  288. because Jesus doesn't want you

  289. to forget.

  290. Paul records how He said it

  291. to His disciples.

  292. On the night He was betrayed,

  293. Jesus took bread

  294. and He broke it,

  295. gave it to His disciples.

  296. As I ministering in His name,

  297. give this bread to you.

  298. He said,

  299. take, eat,

  300. this is My body

  301. broken for you.

  302. Do this in remembrance of Me.

  303. In the same way,

  304. after supper,

  305. He took the cup,

  306. saying,

  307. this cup is the new covenant

  308. in My blood,

  309. which is given for many

  310. for the forgiveness of sins.

  311. Drink from it,

  312. all of you.

  313. See, Jesus showed us His love

  314. to its fullest extent

  315. when He gave His life for us.

  316. It's why Christmas happened.

  317. It's why at Christmas

  318. we celebrate the giving

  319. of costly, valuable gifts.

  320. If you've received that gift,

  321. the gift of eternal life

  322. through faith in Jesus,

  323. come and celebrate

  324. that together with us.

  325. This is His table,

  326. not ours,

  327. not the Presbyterian churches.

  328. You come and celebrate Him

  329. with us.

  330. If you're here tonight

  331. and Jesus is not someone

  332. that makes you excited

  333. about the gift

  334. that He's given you,

  335. you really maybe

  336. are just considering Him,

  337. just wondering about Christmas,

  338. maybe you don't even know

  339. why a gift like this

  340. would be of such

  341. infinite value to you.

  342. If that's where you are tonight,

  343. listen, we're so glad you're here.

  344. We're delighted.

  345. Maybe you came

  346. because someone else

  347. wanted you to come.

  348. Thank you for coming.

  349. We want you to know

  350. that you are welcome

  351. to come forward

  352. as we do this

  353. in just a minute.

  354. We would love the chance

  355. to pray with you

  356. if you would like

  357. or you can stay right where you are

  358. if you'd prefer.

  359. But don't come

  360. and take bread and juice

  361. that represents something

  362. that you don't believe in,

  363. that's not real for you.

  364. We wouldn't want to ask you

  365. to do that.

  366. But if you're considering Jesus,

  367. if you're wondering

  368. about someone

  369. who would love you so much

  370. that He would come

  371. to be born

  372. so that He could die for you,

  373. we'd love to talk to you

  374. about Him.

  375. I'll stay.

  376. I mean, I don't even have

  377. a Barbie Jeep

  378. to put together tonight.

  379. I'd love to stay

  380. and talk with you about that.

  381. Let me pray

  382. and then we'll celebrate together

  383. how much Jesus loves us.

  384. Jesus, thank You

  385. for this gift,

  386. a gift beyond any

  387. that anyone will give us tomorrow.

  388. Your very self,

  389. Your body and blood

  390. poured out for us.

  391. Would You use these

  392. very common elements

  393. to remind us

  394. how much You love us

  395. that You would do that for us?

  396. Would You remind us

  397. that You didn't want

  398. to be apart from us ever

  399. and so You secured

  400. our eternity

  401. by coming and moving in with us

  402. and giving Your life for us.

  403. Thank You.

  404. Be with us

  405. as we celebrate this now

  406. in Jesus' name.

  407. Amen.

  408. I encourage all of you

  409. as we consider

  410. this sacrament together,

  411. as we listen to this music,

  412. perhaps to contemplate

  413. one of the verses

  414. printed in your bulletin there,

  415. maybe one that

  416. particularly to you

  417. communicates

  418. how much Jesus loves you

  419. personally

  420. and contemplate that

  421. as we celebrate

  422. this sacrament.

  423. Our host team members

  424. will usher you

  425. to tables forward

  426. and back

  427. and we will celebrate

  428. that Jesus loves us.
