  1. You are listening to a message from Southwood Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama.

  2. Our passion is to experience and express grace.

  3. Join us.

  4. Amen.

  5. We're delighted to have Brian and Jill Fickert with us this weekend.

  6. Thank you all for joining us.

  7. And we learned last night within the first 30 seconds of Dr. Fickert's message that he

  8. is both taller and funnier than our normal pastor.

  9. And that hurt my feelings a little bit.

  10. I thought one was less obvious than the other.

  11. But we're delighted that he's back from Chattanooga, where he is a professor at Covenant College,

  12. the founder and director of the Chalmers Center there.

  13. And he loves God's church and God's word as we do.

  14. And so he's coming to open God's word for us this morning, and we're eager to hear from

  15. him.

  16. Thank you, Dr. Fickert, for being here.

  17. Thank you, brother.

  18. Thank you.

  19. Well, good morning.

  20. I bring your greetings from Covenant College, which is the college of this denomination,

  21. the Presbyterian Church in America.

  22. I'm a professor there.

  23. I'm also the founder and president of something called the Chalmers Center.

  24. We are a church-equipping organization.

  25. We seek to equip the church to minister in words and in deeds to people who are poor, both

  26. in the United States and around the world.

  27. And it's just a joy to be with you folks today.

  28. I am a professor, so I have to start off with a quiz for you.

  29. You do have the outline, I believe, of my talk in your bulletin.

  30. And there's two opening questions.

  31. I would really like you to write down your answers to these two questions very briefly.

  32. The first is this.

  33. Why did Jesus come to earth?

  34. Why did Jesus...

  35. These are easy ones.

  36. Why did Jesus come to earth?

  37. And secondly, what is the gospel?

  38. Why did Jesus come to earth?

  39. And what is the gospel?

  40. Why did Jesus come to earth?

  41. Why did Jesus come to earth?

  42. And what is the gospel?

  43. As you're finishing that up, let me just give a little bit of introduction before we look

  44. at today's reading.

  45. As we think about pursuing the Great Commission in the 21st century, whether at home or abroad,

  46. we are immediately confronted with the issue of poverty.

  47. You see, the center of Christianity has shifted from the West to the majority world of Africa,

  48. Asia, and Latin America.

  49. And within those continents, the gospel is growing and spreading most rapidly amongst

  50. the poorest people in those places.

  51. As historian Philip Jenkins has noted, the typical Christian in the 21st century is not

  52. an American business person attending a megachurch in a U.S. suburb.

  53. Rather, the typical Christian in the 21st century is a poor woman living in a slum in Sao Paulo,

  54. Brazil, or a poor woman living in a village in rural Nigeria.

  55. And closer to home, we are confronted with poverty right outside our doors.

  56. A recent study has suggested that the poverty rate in Huntsville is about 18%, but there are

  57. actually some neighborhoods just outside of the city center where the poverty rate is actually

  58. as high as 66%.

  59. Huntsville is the 14th, sorry, Madison County is the 14th worst county in the country in terms

  60. of upward mobility.

  61. In other words, if one does the things that one does to pursue the American dream, get an

  62. education, try to find work, your capacity for achieving the goal of the American dream

  63. in Madison County is the 14th worst in the country.

  64. Now, coexisting with these poor people, both at home and abroad, are the rest of us who

  65. are amongst the richest people ever to walk the face of planet Earth.

  66. Now, how should the Church of Jesus Christ respond to these disparities as we try to pursue

  67. the Great Commission?

  68. What should we do?

  69. Well, I don't believe that we can get a comprehensive answer to that question from today's passage,

  70. but I do believe that today's passage, when interpreted in light of all of Scripture, does

  71. shed some light for us on how we should pursue the Great Commission in the face of poverty at

  72. home and abroad.

  73. The passage we're about to read describes Paul and Barnabas, who are really the first missionaries,

  74. as they seek to bring the gospel into the town of Lystra, which is essentially, it's Gentile

  75. territory, they're essentially bringing the gospel to an unreached people group.

  76. So Acts chapter 14, verses 8 through 20, Acts chapter 14, verses 8 through 20 is our reading

    Acts 14:8–20 Acts 14:8–20

  77. today.

  78. Again, Paul and Barnabas pursuing the Great Commission, bringing the gospel to an unreached

  79. unreached people group.

  80. It says this, in Lystra there sat a man who was lame.

  81. He had been that way from birth and had never walked.

  82. He listened to Paul as he was speaking.

  83. Paul looked directly at him, saw that he had faith to be healed, and called out, stand up

  84. on your feet.

  85. At that, the man jumped up and began to walk.

  86. When the crowd saw what Paul had done, they shouted in Lyconian language, the gods have come

  87. down to us in human form.

  88. Barnabas they called Zeus, Paul they called Hermes, because he was the chief speaker.

  89. The priest of Zeus, whose temple was just outside the city, brought bulls and wreaths to the city

  90. gates, because he and the crowd wanted to offer sacrifices to them.

  91. But when the apostles Barnabas and Paul heard of this, they tore their clothes.

  92. They rushed into the crowd shouting, friends, why are you doing this?

  93. We too are only human like you.

  94. We are bringing you good news, telling you to turn from these worthless things to the

  95. living God, who made the heavens and the earth and the sea and everything in them.

  96. In the past, he let all nations go their own way.

  97. Yet he has not left himself without testimony.

  98. He has shown kindness by giving you rain from heaven and crops in their seasons.

  99. He provides you with plenty of food and fills your hearts with joy.

  100. Even with these words, they had difficulty keeping the crowd from sacrificing to them.

  101. Then some Jews came from Antioch and Iconium and won the crowd over.

  102. They stoned Paul and dragged him outside the city, thinking that he was dead.

  103. But after the disciples had gathered around him, he got up, went back into the city.

  104. The next day he and Barnabas left for Derbe.

  105. This is the word of the Lord.

  106. Let us just ask the Lord's blessing on us this morning.

  107. Almighty God, these are not just words on a page.

  108. These are your words to your people.

  109. Words of life, words of truth, words that are meant for wholeness,

  110. words that are meant to call us unto yourself, to bring us into your presence,

  111. words that are meant to make us flourish.

  112. We pray that you be with us today.

  113. Help us to hear what you are saying to us in your word.

  114. Holy Spirit, we ask that you would show up,

  115. that you would bring the transformation that all of us need to our hearts

  116. and our minds and our bodies and our actions.

  117. We pray that you would do something with us today.

  118. Through your word, in Jesus' name we pray.

  119. Amen.

  120. As Paul and Barnabas bring the gospel to this unreached people group,

  121. the first thing that they do is they encounter this man who's crippled,

  122. crippled from birth.

  123. And commentators are agreed that almost certainly this man would have been a beggar.

  124. He would have been unable to work due to the fact that he was lame.

  125. And so he's the kind of person who would have sat there in the marketplace

  126. with his hands outstretched,

  127. hoping that somebody would put food into his hands so that he could survive.

  128. Now what do the first missionaries do when they encounter this crippled man,

  129. this man who is poor, this beggar, if you will?

  130. Well, the first thing we notice is that they heal him.

  131. They restore him so that he's able to function again.

  132. He would have been able to work again.

  133. Now why do they do this?

  134. Why would missionaries heal a crippled man?

  135. Isn't the task of the church solely to preach?

  136. Isn't it the case that addressing the man's physical needs

  137. will divert the church and its missionaries from their task of fulfilling the Great Commission?

  138. I would submit to you that the answer to this question is no.

  139. I would submit to you the answer to those questions are no.

  140. And the reason has to do with the two questions I asked you at the start of this talk.

  141. Why did Jesus come to earth?

  142. And what is the gospel?

  143. And in order to understand the answers to those questions,

  144. we have to back up way back, way back to the very, very beginning

  145. and understand this passage in light of all of God's grand story.

  146. You see, the story begins in the garden, right?

  147. God creates a good world, and in the beginning, he calls it all good,

  148. and he appoints human beings to be in charge of his creation.

  149. And he makes these human beings in his image.

  150. And because he is a creator, they reflect his image when they engage in creative activity.

  151. In other words, work is part of what it means to be human.

  152. We are wired for work.

  153. Work is not just a necessary evil.

  154. Work is part of how we fulfill our calling as image bearers.

  155. And God sets it up in the garden in such a way that as a result of our work,

  156. we'll be able to eat.

  157. We'll be able to sustain ourselves through our work.

  158. Now, of course, what happens is the fall, right?

  159. The fall happens, and Adam and Eve sinned against God.

  160. One of the very first things that we see happening is that work is cursed.

  161. Adam is told thorns will infest the ground.

  162. It won't bear fruit the way that it was supposed to.

  163. Eve is told there will be pains and childbearing.

  164. One of the root causes of poverty is that moment.

  165. That moment of the fall, work is undermined.

  166. And a loss of sustaining work is at the essence of poverty.

  167. But right there in the garden, God promises to send a savior.

  168. He promises to Eve that through her offspring,

  169. one will come who will crush the serpent's head.

  170. And as the Old Testament unfolds, we learn more and more of what this promise means.

  171. Abraham is told that through his seed, all people on earth will be blessed.

  172. And then the scriptures unfold a little bit more.

  173. We get to the book of Isaiah.

  174. And we find out in Isaiah that this one who is promised,

  175. the one who is coming,

  176. will be a king who will usher in a kingdom.

  177. Isaiah chapter 9, verses 6 through 7,

    Isaiah 9:6–7

  178. a passage we often read at Christmas.

  179. Talking about this coming king,

  180. talking about his coming kingdom,

  181. we read this.

  182. For to us a child is born,

  183. to us a son is given.

  184. And the government will be on his shoulders,

  185. and he will be called Wonderful Counselor,

  186. Mighty God,

  187. Everlasting Father,

  188. Prince of Peace.

  189. That word peace is very important in this passage.

  190. Of the greatness of his government and of peace,

  191. there will be no end.

  192. Note that this kingdom will expand over the whole earth,

  193. bringing justice and righteousness and peace

  194. as far as the curse is found.

  195. Now folks, this word peace

  196. doesn't just mean the absence of war.

  197. It's actually in Hebrew the word shalom.

  198. It means comprehensive happiness,

  199. completeness, health, prosperity,

  200. restoration of all things

  201. to the way they are supposed to be.

  202. It's what we're all longing for.

  203. And as Isaiah unfolds,

  204. we read that in particular,

  205. he will bring this peace,

  206. this shalom to the poor.

  207. Isaiah chapter 61, verses 1 and 2,

    Isaiah 61:1

  208. a passage that foretells

  209. the coming of this king and his kingdom.

  210. We read this,

  211. the spirit of the sovereign Lord is on me

  212. because the Lord has anointed me

  213. to proclaim good news to the poor.

  214. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,

  215. to proclaim freedom for the captives,

  216. and release from darkness for the prisoners.

  217. To proclaim the year of the Lord's favor.

  218. The year of the Lord's favor

  219. is referring to the year of Jubilee.

  220. Every 50 years in Old Testament Israel,

  221. land was to be restored

  222. to the original landowners.

  223. Debts were to be forgiven.

  224. There was a moment of restoration

  225. for all in the land,

  226. including the poor.

  227. Once again, the poor people would be restored

  228. to what we are made to be.

  229. People who can work

  230. and support ourselves through that work.

  231. Look, the kingdom is introduced

  232. in economic terms.

  233. I'm an economist.

  234. The kingdom is introduced

  235. in economic terms.

  236. It is a kingdom

  237. that will restore human beings

  238. to image-bearing people

  239. who can work and support themselves

  240. through their own work.

  241. Now, I need you to move forward

  242. to about 700 years.

  243. 700 years from the time

  244. of the prophet of Isaiah.

  245. Isaiah.

  246. Jesus is about to launch

  247. his earthly ministry.

  248. He's just been tempted

  249. in the desert,

  250. and he goes to a synagogue,

  251. and in that synagogue,

  252. the Jews are worshiping,

  253. and they're longing

  254. because they knew

  255. that there was a promised Messiah.

  256. They knew that there was

  257. a king who was coming,

  258. and they were longing

  259. for that king.

  260. They were longing

  261. for that kingdom,

  262. but the Romans

  263. were writing the show.

  264. And hope was probably

  265. in short supply.

  266. And in that synagogue,

  267. Jesus, the son of the carpenter,

  268. stands up,

  269. and a scroll is handed to him

  270. from the book of Isaiah,

  271. and he opens it

  272. to the passage

  273. that we just read.

  274. In Luke chapter 4,

    Luke 4 chapter mention

  275. we read that Jesus opens up,

  276. and he reads that passage

  277. from Isaiah,

  278. the one that we just read,

  279. and he closes with this.

  280. today,

  281. today,

  282. this scripture

  283. is fulfilled

  284. in your hearing.

  285. A shiver must have run

  286. up and down the spines

  287. of the people

  288. in the synagogue

  289. that day,

  290. because what Jesus

  291. is saying

  292. is that promised king

  293. and that promised kingdom

  294. is at hand,

  295. and he is that king.

  296. He is the king of kings

  297. and lord of lords.

  298. He is the one

  299. who's going to make

  300. all things new.

  301. He is the one

  302. who's bringing healing

  303. for the lame,

  304. for the blind,

  305. and for the leper.

  306. That's who he is.

  307. Indeed,

  308. the good news

  309. of the kingdom of God

  310. was Jesus'

  311. primary message.

  312. We read in Luke chapter 4,

    Luke 4:43

  313. verse 43,

  314. Jesus says,

  315. I must proclaim

  316. the good news

  317. of the kingdom of God

  318. to the other towns also,

  319. because that is why

  320. I was sent.

  321. Jesus' message was

  322. the kingdom of God.

  323. I asked you at the start,

  324. why did Jesus come to earth,

  325. and what is the gospel?

  326. Now, if you're like

  327. most Christians in America,

  328. you answer those questions

  329. in the following way.

  330. Why did Jesus come to earth?

  331. He came to earth

  332. to die on the cross

  333. to save me from my sins.

  334. What is the gospel?

  335. The gospel is the good news

  336. that if I repent of my sins

  337. and trust in Jesus,

  338. my soul can go to heaven

  339. when I die.

  340. Those are good answers.

  341. They're true answers.

  342. Hallelujah.

  343. My sins are nailed to the cross

  344. and I bear them no more.

  345. I'm a sinner.

  346. I need a savior.

  347. And Jesus solves that problem for me

  348. because I have a legal problem

  349. before a righteous and holy God.

  350. But folks,

  351. when we reduce the message

  352. of Jesus Christ and his work

  353. to that,

  354. it creates problems.

  355. Because there's a fuller story,

  356. and it's the story

  357. of the kingdom of God,

  358. which was Jesus' primary story.

  359. And see,

  360. without that story,

  361. we end up in weird places.

  362. Let me give you an example.

  363. I'm a Presbyterian pastor's kid.

  364. I grew up

  365. in this kind of setting.

  366. My father was an Orthodox

  367. Presbyterian pastor.

  368. That means that

  369. in the space of Presbyterianism,

  370. I am a Hebrew of the Hebrews.

  371. The OPC are like the Hasidic Jews

  372. of Presbyterianism.

  373. I can out-Orthodox all of you.

  374. And being a pastor's kid,

  375. I was told

  376. that whenever the church doors were open,

  377. I had to be there.

  378. Mom would say to me,

  379. don't you want to set a good example

  380. for your peers?

  381. Well, believing that the salvation

  382. of an entire generation

  383. rested on my shoulders,

  384. every time the church doors were open,

  385. I was there.

  386. My therapist says that

  387. in 30 or 40 years,

  388. I might get over all of this.

  389. Now, I was subjected

  390. to many, many horrible experiences,

  391. playing your banjo

  392. at the age of three

  393. in front of the entire congregation,

  394. those kinds of things.

  395. But the lowest rung,

  396. the worst experience

  397. that I could have ever imagined

  398. was singing in the junior choir

  399. when I was 12 years old.

  400. Because I didn't feel like

  401. singing in the junior choir.

  402. I had to wear this robe.

  403. And it wasn't,

  404. it was kind of creepy.

  405. And to make matters worse,

  406. my older sister

  407. was the choir director.

  408. But there was one thing

  409. that made it

  410. the worst thing possible.

  411. I somehow believed

  412. that for all eternity,

  413. I was going to be singing

  414. in the junior choir,

  415. floating around

  416. like a ghost on clouds

  417. with a diaper on

  418. and a harp in my hands.

  419. And quite frankly,

  420. that wasn't

  421. a very compelling vision.

  422. And the vision of me

  423. floating around in clouds

  424. with a harp

  425. is not a very compelling vision

  426. for you either.

  427. It wasn't a very compelling vision.

  428. You know,

  429. I didn't want to go to hell,

  430. but to be honest with you,

  431. this only sounded

  432. marginally better.

  433. It's not a particularly

  434. compelling vision.

  435. It's a disembodied vision.

  436. It's a ghost-like

  437. existence vision.

  438. It didn't give me

  439. a reason to want to

  440. get out of bed

  441. on Monday morning

  442. because my soul

  443. was secure in heaven.

  444. That didn't sound that great,

  445. but it was better

  446. than the other place.

  447. But what was I supposed

  448. to do on Monday morning?

  449. It wasn't a particularly

  450. compelling story.

  451. And I would submit to you,

  452. it's not a particularly

  453. compelling story

  454. on its own

  455. for little children

  456. picking garbage

  457. out of dumps

  458. in Manila.

  459. It's not a particularly

  460. compelling story

  461. for little girls

  462. being sold into brothels

  463. in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

  464. And it's not a particularly

  465. compelling story

  466. for little boys

  467. and little girls

  468. who are attending schools

  469. in Huntsville, Alabama

  470. that are not going to

  471. prepare them

  472. to live in this world.

  473. We need a fuller story.

  474. We need a fuller story

  475. and the story we need

  476. is the story of Jesus Christ.

  477. We need the good news

  478. of the gospel.

  479. And the good news

  480. of the gospel

  481. is the good news

  482. of the kingdom of God.

  483. It's the good news

  484. that Jesus Christ

  485. is King of kings

  486. and Lord of lords.

  487. That he's making

  488. all things new.

  489. That he cares about my soul,

  490. he cares about my body,

  491. he cares about the city,

  492. he cares about grass

  493. and trees and cows,

  494. he cares about our schools,

  495. he cares about every square inch

  496. of his creation,

  497. he cared about it enough

  498. to die for it.

  499. That's the good news

  500. of the gospel.

  501. And it's the good news

  502. that you and I

  503. need to embrace

  504. and it's the good news

  505. for the low income people

  506. in this city.

  507. It provides real hope,

  508. real purpose,

  509. both for this life

  510. and the next.

  511. We need to rethink

  512. our story

  513. and we need to rethink

  514. how we're telling

  515. that story.

  516. You see,

  517. Jesus declares

  518. the good news

  519. of his kingdom

  520. verbally,

  521. but he also does it

  522. with deeds.

  523. Imagine how silly

  524. it would have been

  525. if Jesus had walked around

  526. with his hands

  527. in his pockets.

  528. He saw lepers

  529. and he saw the lame

  530. and he saw the blind

  531. and he said to them,

  532. I'm king of kings

  533. and lord of lords.

  534. I'm using all the authority

  535. and power that I have

  536. in heaven and earth

  537. to usher in a new kingdom,

  538. a new heaven,

  539. a new creation

  540. where all is made whole,

  541. where shalom abounds.

  542. I can do it all,

  543. but I'm not going to bother

  544. showing you,

  545. just trust me.

  546. He puts his hands

  547. in his pockets.

  548. Who would have believed him?

  549. His message was crazy enough

  550. to begin with.

  551. Who would have possibly believed

  552. that the son of the carpenter

  553. could do this kind of thing?

  554. So what does Jesus do?

  555. He preaches the kingdom

  556. and he shows the kingdom.

  557. He pulls his hands

  558. out of his pockets.

  559. He touches the lame.

  560. He touches the blind.

  561. He touches the leper.

  562. He preaches the kingdom

  563. and he shows the kingdom.

  564. I need you to notice something.

  565. Notice that all of Jesus' miracles

  566. were restorative.

  567. He didn't just show off.

  568. He didn't just say,

  569. hey, watch this,

  570. and like take somebody's head

  571. and wrap it around

  572. and make it fly off or something.

  573. He didn't just make the moon

  574. run around, the sun.

  575. He didn't just show off.

  576. Because Jesus was trying

  577. to communicate

  578. a particular message.

  579. He was trying to communicate

  580. that the new heavens

  581. and new earth

  582. were dawning in him.

  583. You see, in Jesus,

  584. death and resurrection,

  585. he is the start

  586. of the new creation.

  587. His body is the first thing

  588. in the new creation.

  589. He's ushering in

  590. this place where Shalom abounds.

  591. And in that place

  592. where Shalom abounds,

  593. there's restoration.

  594. There's healing.

  595. The poor are restored

  596. to people who can work

  597. and support themselves

  598. through their work.

  599. They're restored

  600. to image-bearing.

  601. They're restored

  602. to all that it means

  603. to be human.

  604. What Jesus is doing

  605. in his miracles

  606. is giving a sneak preview

  607. of the coming attractions.

  608. For those of you

  609. under the age of 30,

  610. he was creating trailers.

  611. When Jesus heals,

  612. he's creating a trailer,

  613. a sneak preview

  614. of what it'll be like

  615. when his kingdom comes

  616. in its fullness.

  617. And in that kingdom,

  618. there is restoration.

  619. There is healing.

  620. There is the returning

  621. to full image-bearing.

  622. And Jesus continues

  623. his mission

  624. through his church.

  625. Luke chapter 9,

    Luke 9:1–2

  626. verses 1 through 2,

  627. it says this,

  628. when Jesus had called

  629. the twelve together,

  630. he gave them power

  631. and authority

  632. to drive out all demons

  633. and to cure diseases,

  634. and he sent them out

  635. to preach.

  636. Look at the message.

  637. The kingdom of God.

  638. That's the message.

  639. He sends out his followers

  640. to preach the kingdom of God

  641. and to heal the sick.

  642. Jesus preaches the kingdom of God

  643. in words and in deeds,

  644. and his church

  645. is to continue his mission

  646. by preaching the kingdom of God

  647. in words and in deeds

  648. through deeds of restoration.

  649. And folks,

  650. back to our passage in Acts,

  651. this is what Paul

  652. and Barnabas were doing.

  653. They'd been sent out

  654. by Jesus Christ

  655. to preach the kingdom

  656. and to show the kingdom,

  657. and that's what Paul

  658. and Barnabas are doing

  659. when they encounter

  660. the crippled man.

  661. They heal him

  662. because it's the commission

  663. that God had given to them.

  664. But the deeds

  665. were not enough.

  666. You see,

  667. Paul and Barnabas

  668. also used words

  669. to communicate

  670. the kingdom of God.

  671. I would submit to you

  672. that in this passage,

  673. Paul and Barnabas' words

  674. ministered to three

  675. different groups of people.

  676. First of all,

  677. the words ministered

  678. to the crippled man himself.

  679. We read in the passage

  680. that he had been listening

  681. to Paul and Barnabas' preaching,

  682. and Paul saw

  683. they had faith

  684. to be healed.

  685. We know from elsewhere

  686. in Scripture

  687. that words are necessary

  688. to draw people

  689. into saving faith.

  690. Deeds are not enough.

  691. Romans chapter 10,

    Romans 10:17

  692. verse 17,

  693. says this,

  694. faith comes from

  695. hearing the message,

  696. and the message is heard

  697. through the word

  698. about Christ.

  699. Christ.

  700. Yes,

  701. the kingdom is bringing

  702. healing as far

  703. as the curse is found,

  704. but it is only those

  705. who repent

  706. of their sins

  707. and trust in the king

  708. who get to enter

  709. into that kingdom

  710. and experience

  711. its full benefits.

  712. We have many people today,

  713. we have many people today

  714. who are passionate

  715. about social justice.

  716. that's a good thing.

  717. We have many people today

  718. who are passionate

  719. for the kingdom to come,

  720. and that's a good thing.

  721. But they want the king,

  722. the kingdom,

  723. without the king.

  724. They want the goodies

  725. without submitting

  726. to King Jesus

  727. in faith and repentance.

  728. If you want the kingdom,

  729. you have to bow your knee

  730. to the king.

  731. This shows up all the time

  732. in poverty alleviation work.

  733. Everybody who's ever worked

  734. in the space

  735. of poverty alleviation

  736. knows a famous quote

  737. that's been attributed

  738. to Francis of Assisi.

  739. Nobody actually knows

  740. if he said it,

  741. but it's every community

  742. development worker's

  743. favorite quote.

  744. And it goes like this.

  745. Preach the gospel.

  746. Use words if you must.

  747. Now what that's trying

  748. to get at is precious,

  749. but it's fundamentally wrong.

  750. Because we always must.

  751. We always must.

  752. You cannot enter

  753. into the kingdom

  754. without faith in the king.

  755. And you can't have

  756. saving faith in the king

  757. without the words

  758. about who he is.

  759. Second,

  760. the words ministered

  761. to the people

  762. who were watching

  763. the miracle.

  764. You see, folks,

  765. without words,

  766. people will interpret deeds

  767. through their own worldview,

  768. through their own presuppositions

  769. about how the world works.

  770. We see this happening

  771. in the passage.

  772. Look at what happened.

  773. They healed the crippled man

  774. and immediately the people

  775. think that Paul and Barnabas

  776. are gods.

  777. Now there's a reason for this.

  778. There was a folklore

  779. in this part of the world

  780. that at a previous era,

  781. the gods had come down

  782. in human form.

  783. And because the people

  784. in that area

  785. had not been very hospitable,

  786. the gods had wiped out

  787. all of their homes.

  788. And so there's actually

  789. a sense here

  790. of franticness,

  791. of we're being given

  792. a second chance

  793. to show hospitality.

  794. And that's why this priest

  795. is so frantic.

  796. He said,

  797. oh, I've only got

  798. one job to do.

  799. I've got to do it.

  800. So he's running out there

  801. with the reeds

  802. and the bulls

  803. to make sure

  804. that they show hospitality

  805. to the gods

  806. because he doesn't want

  807. the people's homes

  808. to be wiped out

  809. as they were in the past.

  810. Now notice what Paul

  811. and Barnabas do

  812. in light of this.

  813. Do they close their mouths

  814. and say,

  815. well, we don't want

  816. to be offensive here

  817. to anybody?

  818. Do they say,

  819. well, we're kind of

  820. postmodern

  821. and what's true for us

  822. might not be true for you

  823. and we don't want

  824. to impose our worldview

  825. on you?

  826. That's not what happens.

  827. What Paul and Barnabas do

  828. is they're frantic.

  829. They tear their clothes.

  830. It's actually a symbol

  831. of great distress.

  832. They are very concerned

  833. that people understand

  834. what's actually going on here.

  835. And look what they do.

  836. They narrate the miracle

  837. but then they narrate

  838. God's working

  839. in all of creation.

  840. They narrate

  841. the general functioning

  842. of the universe

  843. and they say,

  844. it's God who created

  845. the heavens,

  846. the earth,

  847. and the sea.

  848. It's God who sends you rain.

  849. It's God who makes

  850. your crops grow.

  851. It's God who gives you food.

  852. It's God who gives you joy.

  853. In essence,

  854. what Paul and Barnabas

  855. are doing

  856. is they're trying

  857. to replace

  858. a pagan worldview

  859. with the worldview

  860. of the kingdom of God

  861. that all of creation

  862. is created,

  863. sustained,

  864. and being redeemed

  865. by Jesus Christ alone.

  866. and third,

  867. and this might be

  868. less obvious,

  869. I believe the words

  870. are actually ministering

  871. to Paul and Barnabas

  872. themselves.

  873. You see,

  874. we are always tempted.

  875. We are always tempted

  876. to take credit

  877. for God's work.

  878. Folks,

  879. in the space

  880. of poverty alleviation,

  881. this is a constant

  882. temptation

  883. because every

  884. non-profit ministry

  885. has to raise money

  886. and so there's a temptation

  887. to jockey

  888. and to compete

  889. with other ministries

  890. because we're all

  891. on our way

  892. to the same donors.

  893. We're running

  894. to the same donors.

  895. We're bumping into each other

  896. on the way there

  897. and we've got to say

  898. that we did something.

  899. So these are my poor people.

  900. You didn't fix them.

  901. I fixed them.

  902. We need to take credit

  903. for the success

  904. to get more money.

  905. And then many of us

  906. have egos.

  907. I have one.

  908. I want to have a sense

  909. of meaning and purpose

  910. in my life

  911. that I accomplish

  912. something.

  913. And so the temptation

  914. is always to take credit

  915. for God's work

  916. and God doesn't take

  917. this sin lightly.

  918. Indeed, Paul and Barnabas'

  919. very lives

  920. may have been at risk

  921. at this moment.

  922. Not just from the people

  923. but from God Almighty.

  924. You see, in just a few chapters earlier

  925. in Acts chapter 12

    Acts 12 chapter mention

  926. King Herod stands up

  927. and gives a public address

  928. and the audience

  929. called him a god.

  930. And look what the Bible says.

  931. Immediately,

  932. because Herod did not

  933. give praise to God

  934. an angel of the Lord

  935. struck him down

  936. and he was eaten

  937. by worms

  938. and died.

  939. God is the king

  940. and he wants

  941. the praise.

  942. Paul and Barnabas'

  943. very lives

  944. and certainly

  945. their spiritual health

  946. were at stake.

  947. They needed to narrate

  948. that Jesus

  949. is the king.

  950. Now what does this have to do

  951. with Southwood

  952. Presbyterian Church?

  953. What does this have to do

  954. with you folks?

  955. Four points

  956. and they're going to go fast

  957. if you're getting antsy.

  958. Just hang in there.

  959. First,

  960. you must continue

  961. Jesus' mission

  962. of declaring

  963. and demonstrating

  964. good news

  965. for the poor.

  966. Folks,

  967. the Bible says

  968. that you are the body

  969. and the bride

  970. and the very fullness

  971. of Jesus Christ.

  972. It's in Ephesians.

  973. This means

  974. when the world

  975. looks at you,

  976. when the poor

  977. look at you,

  978. you're supposed

  979. to look like Jesus,

  980. the one who declares

  981. and demonstrates

  982. his kingdom.

  983. In this light,

  984. folks,

  985. care for the poor,

  986. care for this city

  987. isn't just kind of

  988. icing on the cake.

  989. It's not just kind of

  990. a nice thing to do.

  991. It's actually central

  992. to what it means

  993. to be

  994. the people of God.

  995. Indeed,

  996. throughout the Old

  997. and New Testaments

  998. we are told

  999. that one of the primary

  1000. evidences

  1001. of saving faith

  1002. is our willingness

1003. to care for the poor.

  1004. 1 John 3,

    1 John 3:17–18

  1005. verses 17-18.

  1006. If anyone has

  1007. material possessions,

  1008. and we do,

  1009. if anyone has

  1010. material possessions

  1011. and sees a brother

  1012. or sister in need

1013. but has no pity on them,

  1014. how can the love

1015. of God be in that person?

  1016. Dear children,

  1017. let us love

  1018. not with words

  1019. or speech

  1020. but with actions

  1021. and in truth.

  1022. People of God,

  1023. you are the richest

  1024. people ever

  1025. to walk the face

  1026. of the earth.

  1027. If this command

  1028. is to anybody,

  1029. it's to you.

  1030. You must act.

  1031. You must do something.

  1032. But what you do

  1033. really matters.

  1034. Good intentions

  1035. are not enough.

1036. And that's the second point.

  1037. Our ministries

  1038. amongst the poor

  1039. must be restorative.

  1040. They have a purpose.

  1041. They're trying to give

  1042. a sneak preview

  1043. of the coming attraction

1044. of Christ and His kingdom

  1045. when people are restored

  1046. to full image bearers.

1047. The deeds have to match

  1048. the words,

  1049. which means that

  1050. our ministries

  1051. must restore people

  1052. to what God

1053. has made them to be.

  1054. Image bearers

  1055. who can work

  1056. and enjoy the fruits

  1057. of their work.

  1058. That may sound obvious

  1059. to you,

1060. but I would submit to you

1061. that a very large number

  1062. of Christian ministries

  1063. around the world

  1064. aren't doing that.

1065. we run in with solutions

  1066. that quite frankly

  1067. create dependencies,

  1068. that undermine dignity,

  1069. that don't restore people

  1070. as image bearers.

1071. I have something to tell you.

  1072. It's a dirty little secret.

  1073. The Chalmers Center works

  1074. with churches

  1075. all over the world,

  1076. and the hardest places,

  1077. the hardest places

  1078. to bring

  1079. the good news

  1080. of Christ's restoration

  1081. are places

  1082. where the American church

  1083. has been a lot.

  1084. Because the American church

  1085. runs around the world

  1086. hurling around resources,

  1087. creating all kinds

  1088. of dependencies,

1089. and so when you walk

  1090. into a community

  1091. and say,

1092. we're here to help restore you

  1093. to image bearer,

  1094. and they're like,

  1095. why?

1096. I can go across the street

1097. and get goodies for free.

  1098. It's demeaning.

  1099. It undermines image bearing.

1100. It is not the gospel

  1101. of the kingdom.

  1102. It's the gospel

  1103. of us feeling good

  1104. about ourselves

  1105. and what we're doing.

  1106. Third,

  1107. we must design

  1108. our ministries

1109. so from top to bottom

1110. there is a verbal narration

  1111. of who Jesus is

1112. so that at the end of the day

  1113. people are worshiping

  1114. the King of Kings

  1115. and Lord of Lords.

  1116. that's harder

  1117. to pull off

  1118. than you might think.

  1119. You see,

  1120. when it's us

  1121. bringing in

  1122. the malaria nets,

  1123. when it's us

  1124. bringing in the food,

  1125. when it's us

1126. bringing in all the goodies,

  1127. the temptation

  1128. for people

  1129. is to start

  1130. to put their faith

  1131. in us.

  1132. And so we've got

  1133. to design our ministries

  1134. in such a way

  1135. that we act like

  1136. Paul and Barnabas.

  1137. It's not us.

  1138. It's not about us.

  1139. It's about King Jesus

  1140. who's healing us.

1141. He provides the malaria nets.

  1142. He provides the wells.

1143. He provides the clean water.

  1144. He provides the sun.

  1145. He provides everything.

  1146. It's all about him.

  1147. It's not about you

1148. and it's not about me.

  1149. It's very difficult

  1150. to do this,

  1151. especially if you take

  1152. sources of money

  1153. that don't allow you

  1154. to do it.

  1155. Christian ministries

  1156. all across this country

  1157. are taking funds

  1158. from sources

1159. that will not allow you

  1160. to narrate

  1161. the gospel truth.

  1162. And then finally,

  1163. we must repent

  1164. of our own worldview.

  1165. You see,

1166. it wasn't just the people

  1167. that Paul and Barnabas

  1168. were ministering to

1169. that have a fallen worldview.

  1170. You and I

1171. have a fallen worldview too.

1172. You've got to listen carefully

  1173. because we've got to

  1174. end here quickly.

  1175. Western Christianity

  1176. has tended to focus

  1177. on the legal aspects

  1178. of Christ's work.

1179. Christ dies on the cross

1180. to save me from my sins.

1181. My soul goes to heaven

  1182. when I die.

  1183. That's it.

  1184. And as a result,

  1185. we don't have a story

  1186. of Monday through Saturday.

1187. He solves our sin problem

  1188. on Sunday mornings

  1189. we worship him.

  1190. We don't have a story

  1191. Monday through Saturday.

1192. Most of us have reverted

  1193. to deism.

  1194. Most of us believe

  1195. that functionally

  1196. the world operates

  1197. like a machine.

  1198. And brothers and sisters

  1199. who I love

  1200. with all my heart,

  1201. the backgrounds

1202. of most of the people

  1203. in this congregation

  1204. lend themselves to this.

  1205. You're scientists.

  1206. You're scientists.

  1207. And you've been inculcated

  1208. in a worldview

  1209. that says the world

  1210. functions on its own

  1211. like a closed machine.

  1212. And Christ,

  1213. if he exists,

  1214. simply heals

  1215. our sin problems.

1216. He has nothing to do

  1217. with Monday through Saturday.

1218. But that's not the gospel.

  1219. The gospel is that

  1220. he's the king,

  1221. that he holds

  1222. the atoms in place,

  1223. that he makes

  1224. the chemical formulas

  1225. work the same time

  1226. over and over

  1227. and over again

  1228. because he's a covenant

  1229. keeping God.

  1230. That's him

  1231. holding the atoms

  1232. in place.

  1233. But you see,

1234. if Jesus is in king

  1235. of Monday through Saturday,

  1236. then who is?

1237. I would submit to you

  1238. that the issue

  1239. that most of us

  1240. are facing

  1241. in the West

  1242. is this.

  1243. we believe

  1244. that our own knowledge,

  1245. our own know-how,

  1246. our own science,

  1247. our own technology,

  1248. our own wealth

1249. are things that we created

  1250. on our own

  1251. because we don't understand

  1252. the gospel

1253. of the kingdom of God.

  1254. We don't understand

  1255. that it's all a gift

  1256. from him.

  1257. And you know

  1258. what happens from that?

  1259. We get really arrogant.

  1260. We get really arrogant.

  1261. And when you're arrogant,

  1262. you crush poor people

  1263. because poor people

  1264. are typically suffering

  1265. from a marred identity,

  1266. a sense of inferiority,

1267. a sense of not fully human.

  1268. And we rush in

  1269. and we take over

  1270. to fix them

1271. and we confirm in them

  1272. what they're already feeling.

  1273. I'm less than human.

  1274. I can't do anything.

1275. I would submit to you

  1276. that the wealthiest people

  1277. in the world

1278. are the least capable people

  1279. of helping the poor

  1280. around the world.

  1281. The wealthiest people

  1282. in the world

  1283. are the least capable

  1284. of helping poor people

  1285. around the world.

  1286. Because poor people

  1287. don't need our stuff.

  1288. They don't need us

  1289. telling them

  1290. how smart we are.

  1291. What they need

  1292. is King Jesus.

1293. So I would call us

  1294. to repentance this morning.

  1295. Repentance of the arrogance

  1296. and the pride

  1297. that are dripping

  1298. all over Western civilization.

  1299. But folks,

  1300. here's the thing.

  1301. We can't get over

1302. our pride on our own.

  1303. We're helpless

  1304. to overcome our pride.

1305. So what I'm telling you is

  1306. that the first step

  1307. in poverty alleviation

  1308. is for us

1309. to reach out our hands

  1310. like beggars

1311. and to say to King Jesus,

  1312. please come heal me.

  1313. Folks, in this light,

  1314. poverty alleviation

1315. isn't so much about us

  1316. putting food

1317. in the hands of a beggar,

  1318. although sometimes

  1319. that's helpful.

  1320. It's more like this.

  1321. It's more like

  1322. grabbing the hand

  1323. of a beggar

  1324. and saying,

  1325. I'm broken

  1326. and you're broken.

  1327. I'm hungry

  1328. and you're hungry.

  1329. Let us go feed

  1330. on King Jesus together.

  1331. Let us pray.

  1332. King Jesus,

  1333. forgive us.

  1334. Forgive us

  1335. when we think

  1336. it's all about ourselves.

  1337. Forgive me

  1338. when I think

  1339. it's all about me.

  1340. King Jesus,

  1341. you are the creator

  1342. and the sustainer

  1343. and the reconciler

  1344. of all things.

  1345. it's all about you.

  1346. We can do nothing

  1347. without you.

1348. You tell us in your word

  1349. that apart from you

  1350. we can do

  1351. absolutely nothing.

  1352. And so Lord,

1353. we come to you today

  1354. like beggars.

  1355. We come to you

  1356. with outstretched hands

  1357. asking you

  1358. to heal us.

  1359. Heal us

  1360. from our materialism.

  1361. Heal us

  1362. from our pride.

  1363. May we fall

  1364. at the foot

  1365. of the cross.

  1366. And we fall

  1367. at the foot

  1368. of the cross.

  1369. And may you

  1370. heal our deepest needs.

  1371. And then may you

  1372. use us

  1373. to heal others.

  1374. It's in your name

  1375. alone that we pray.

  1376. Amen.
