  1. You are listening to a message from Southwood Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama.

  2. Our passion is to experience and express grace. Join us.

  3. We're going to keep meditating on the cross for the rest of this service,

  4. and in particular on the man of sorrows who was crucified on it.

  5. See, that's what Luke has been focusing on in his gospel since chapter 1, isn't it?

  6. Who is this Jesus?

  7. What did he do?

  8. What did he say?

  9. What is his identity?

  10. And we've been learning about him as a king who has an upside-down kind of kingdom that nobody's ever expected.

  11. We've seen him as a prophet who is mighty in word and is teaching and mighty in deed and is healing and is other acts.

  12. And all along the way, as we've learned all of those things about Jesus,

  13. Jesus has been telling us that the most important thing about him,

  14. the most important thing about who he is and about why he has come,

  15. is coming in Jerusalem where he's going to suffer and die and rise again.

  16. He's promised forgiveness of sins.

  17. He's pointed us to eternal hope.

  18. He's told us of a kingdom that's not of this world but that changes everything about this world.

  19. And now this is it.

  20. We're there.

  21. The greatest events in human history.

  22. The defining moments for Jesus and his followers.

  23. Now, as we've seen recently, he's been betrayed.

  24. Arrested.

  25. Denied.

  26. Beaten.

  27. Found innocent.

  28. And nonetheless condemned to be crucified.

  29. Turn with me to Luke chapter 23.

    Luke 23 chapter mention

  30. And we'll read together of his actual crucifixion.

  31. In the middle of the night, Roman governor Pilate has granted the demand of the Jewish leaders

  32. and the crowds to have Jesus killed.

  33. And in the early morning hours of Friday, he hands him over to be crucified.

  34. Follow as I read and listen for the heart of Jesus that tells you more of why he came,

  35. why he died, and of who he is.

  36. Luke 23 at verse 26.

  37. And as they led Jesus away, they seized one Simon of Cyrene who was coming in from the country

  38. and laid on him the cross to carry it behind Jesus.

  39. And there followed him a great multitude of the people and of women who were mourning and lamenting for him.

  40. But turning to them, Jesus said,

  41. Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me, but weep for yourselves and for your children.

  42. For behold, the days are coming when they will say,

  43. Blessed are the barren and the wombs that never bore and the breasts that never nursed.

  44. Then they will begin to say to the mountains,

  45. Fall on us and to the hills, cover us.

  46. For if they do these things when the wood is green,

  47. what will happen when it is dry?

  48. Two others who were criminals were led away to be put to death with him.

  49. And when they came to the place that is called the skull,

  50. there they crucified him.

  51. And the criminals, one on his right and one on his left.

  52. And Jesus said,

  53. Father, forgive them,

  54. for they know not what they do.

  55. And they cast lots to divide his garments.

  56. And the people stood by watching,

  57. but the rulers scoffed at him,

  58. saying,

  59. He saved others.

  60. Let him save himself if he's the Christ of God,

  61. his chosen one.

  62. The soldiers also mocked him,

  63. coming up and offering him sour wine and saying,

  64. If you're the king of the Jews, save yourself.

  65. There was also an inscription over him,

  66. This is the king of the Jews.

  67. One of the criminals who were hanged railed at him,

  68. saying,

  69. Are you not the Christ?

  70. Save yourself and us.

  71. But the other rebuked him,

  72. saying,

  73. Do you not fear God,

  74. since you are under the same sentence of condemnation?

  75. And we indeed justly,

  76. for we are receiving the due reward of our deeds.

  77. But this man has done nothing wrong.

  78. And he said,

  79. Jesus,

  80. remember me when you come into your kingdom.

  81. And he said to him,

  82. Truly I say to you,

  83. today you will be with me in paradise.

  84. This is God's word.

  85. Let's ask for his help.

  86. Holy Spirit,

  87. we do ask that you would help us.

  88. Help us grasp things that are too great for us to comprehend.

  89. Amen.

  90. These are somber words,

  91. but really hopeful words.

  92. They're words that in some ways are very familiar to us,

  93. and in other ways are just so far beyond us.

  94. Father,

  95. I pray that you would not let a single person in this room miss the message of the cross this morning.

  96. The message of the Savior who is on it.

  97. Father,

  98. don't let me miss it.

  99. Don't let us miss it.

  100. May we hear you.

  101. Speak to us by your word,

  102. we ask in Jesus' name.

  103. Amen.

  104. Luke doesn't,

  105. in this account,

  106. focus our attention much on the details of Jesus' physical suffering.

  107. But as Jesus heads outside the city to be crucified,

  108. we're told something at the very beginning that reminds us what he suffered in the past 12 hours.

  109. Someone else has to come carry the cross for him.

  110. Remember the emotional agony?

  111. The physical torment in the garden,

  112. sweating drops of blood?

  113. That's only maybe 12 hours ago.

  114. He's now been hit in the face and beaten.

  115. He's been scourged with the flagellum whip

  116. to the point that historians tell us bones and cartilage were visible.

  117. A crown of thorns pressed into his head as blood runs down his neck.

  118. He's been so weakened that Simon has to carry that cross beam for him.

  119. Because the omnipotent Creator,

  120. who by the word of his mouth spoke the trees into existence,

  121. has now humbled himself so far in the flesh

  122. to the point that he no longer has the strength to lift the wood that he made.

  123. Just think about that for a minute.

  124. That's where Jesus is.

  125. I don't know about you,

  126. but I'm pretty selfish by nature.

  127. I'm told that not unlike many men,

  128. when I get just a little bit of a cold,

  129. that selfishness spikes,

  130. and I become all about myself.

  131. When I'm sick or weak,

  132. when I'm attacked,

  133. when I'm stressed or hurting,

  134. I become even more self-centered.

  135. I think mostly of myself.

  136. And I've never endured anywhere near

  137. the physical, emotional, spiritual torment

  138. that Jesus is under.

  139. And I want you to watch what happens through this passage.

  140. If you want to know what he's about,

  141. watch now as he puts his heart for others on display

  142. in the midst of his intense personal pain and weakness.

  143. An incredible reminder that he came not for himself,

  144. but for others to be indeed good news of great joy for all people.

  145. The first group he encounters is some women who are mourning.

  146. Verse 27,

  147. there followed him a great multitude of the people

  148. and of women who were mourning and lamenting for him.

  149. But turning to them, Jesus said,

  150. daughters of Jerusalem,

  151. do not weep for me,

  152. but weep for yourselves and for your children.

  153. For behold, the days are coming when they will say,

  154. blessed are the barren and the wombs that never bore

  155. and the breasts that never nursed.

  156. Then they will begin to say to the mountains,

  157. fall on us until the hills cover us.

  158. For if they do these things when the wood is green,

  159. what will happen when it is dry?

  160. Jesus not getting lost in self-pity

  161. as the consummate prophet

  162. continues to call God's people back to him.

  163. Here he's warning them of coming devastation.

  164. It would happen first in about 40 years

  165. when Rome ransacks Jerusalem.

  166. And it would be terrible.

  167. Terrible to the point that

  168. even a great blessing like childbearing

  169. will be considered a curse.

  170. If this crucifixion is happening to an innocent Jesus

  171. when the wood is green,

  172. imagine what judgment will come upon rebellious Israel

  173. when the wood is dry, so to speak.

  174. And so the point of what Jesus is saying

  175. is the warning of impending judgment

  176. calls you to repentance.

  177. Just as the prophet Jonah's message to Nineveh,

  178. yet 40 days and Nineveh will be destroyed,

  179. it was meant to call them to repentance

  180. and to find rescue.

  181. So Jesus is calling Israel to respond in repentance.

  182. In fact, if they listen and watch closely,

  183. they'll realize their only ultimate hope

  184. is Jesus himself.

  185. His judgment-bearing death on the cross.

  186. Jesus, on the way to the cross,

  187. preparing to endure the just punishment for sin,

  188. pleads the urgency of repentance.

  189. Perhaps nowhere else better than the cross

  190. can we see the necessity of turning

  191. from our sins so clearly.

  192. As awful as the cross is,

  193. Jesus says weeping should be

  194. for those facing the just judgment for their sin

  195. with no protection from the eternal wrath of God.

  196. Our sin deserves the cross

  197. and eternal death.

  198. Those, Jesus says, are the greater tears.

  199. But they push Jesus onward,

  200. out to Golgotha, the skull,

  201. where verse 33 says

  202. they actually crucify Him.

  203. This means the actual nailing of His hands

  204. to the cross.

  205. One nail through each one.

  206. And after being raised up,

  207. likely then one nail through both feet together.

  208. Most of us can't imagine pain like that.

  209. The torn flesh,

  210. the severed nerves,

  211. literally excruciating pain.

  212. A word just for this form of torture

  213. means pain from the cross.

  214. And I tell you that

  215. so that you can marvel with me

  216. at what comes out of Jesus' mouth

  217. at this very moment.

  218. The words from this passage

  219. that have most stuck with me this week,

  220. Jesus says,

  221. Father,

  222. forgive them.

  223. Perhaps first referring

  224. to those Roman soldiers

  225. who are driving the nails

  226. into His hands and feet,

  227. but there are many

  228. whose actions have led to

  229. Jesus being here on the cross.

  230. and He says,

  231. Father,

  232. forgive them.

  233. There is little worse

  234. that anyone could do

  235. to a person.

  236. In fact,

  237. the crucifying

  238. of the innocent Son of God,

  239. whether they understood it or not,

  240. has to be characterized

  241. as the most heinous sin ever.

  242. At least from a divine perspective,

  243. what else would have incited

  244. God's wrath,

  245. kindled His just anger

  246. more than His Son

  247. being unjustly tortured

  248. and killed.

  249. And to these sinners,

  250. Jesus' heart of forgiveness

  251. is on full display.

  252. Y'all, what's Jesus doing

  253. at the cross?

  254. What's He come to the cross for?

  255. He's coming to forgive.

  256. He's got forgiveness

  257. so much on His mind

  258. as He is nailed to the cross

  259. that He is praying

  260. for those who are causing Him

  261. this intense pain.

  262. I found so much encouragement lately

  263. in Jesus praying for me.

  264. As He prays for Peter

  265. that Peter's faith would not fail,

  266. that Peter's repentance

  267. would actually advance

  268. God's kingdom.

  269. But this may be the best prayer

  270. that Jesus prays.

  271. The one I need to hear

  272. over and over.

  273. Jesus prays,

  274. Father, forgive them.

  275. He pleads for forgiveness

  276. for the worst sinners.

  277. Hear those words clearly

  278. in your heart today,

  279. especially if you think

  280. you've failed God.

  281. You've blown it really big.

  282. You think no one,

  283. especially God,

  284. could ever really love you.

  285. Father,

  286. forgive them.

  287. Maybe you've sung those words

  288. that it was my sin

  289. that held Him there.

  290. And you felt the weight

  291. of being just like those

  292. who yelled,

  293. crucify Him,

  294. crucify Him,

  295. and who drove the nails

  296. into His hands and feet

  297. and you felt ashamed

  298. and hopeless

  299. and you've given up hope

  300. for yourself.

  301. You must listen to Jesus

  302. more than to your own condemnation,

  303. more than to the lies

  304. of Satan in your heart.

  305. Jesus says,

  306. Father, forgive them.

  307. Who is Jesus?

  308. Oh, He's a forgiving Savior.

  309. That's why He's walking

  310. this painful road

  311. in the first place,

  312. isn't it?

  313. It's why He came,

  314. praise the Lord,

  315. He came to forgive.

  316. I'll show us that again

  317. in a minute.

  318. But first,

  319. Luke gives us a glimpse

  320. of the people around Jesus

  321. as He's offering forgiveness.

  322. They're casting lots

  323. for His clothes

  324. in fulfillment

  325. of the Old Testament.

  326. Jesus and those around Him

  327. in this passage,

  328. one Old Testament prophecy

  329. after another

  330. being fulfilled by them.

  331. But they're not just

  332. putting Him on the cross,

  333. they're also mocking Him.

  334. He's already got blood

  335. and tears covering Him.

  336. Now there's their spit

  337. and their jeers

  338. just landing on Him.

  339. Verse 35,

  340. the people stood by watching,

  341. but the rulers,

  342. their religious leaders,

  343. scoffed at Him,

  344. saying,

  345. He saved others.

  346. Let Him save Himself.

  347. If He's the Christ of God,

  348. His chosen one,

  349. soldiers are joining in too.

  350. They mock Him,

  351. coming up,

  352. offering Him sour wine,

  353. saying,

  354. If you're the King of the Jews,

  355. save yourself.

  356. And that's what it says,

  357. right?

  358. There's an inscription

  359. over Him,

  360. Pilate's written it.

  361. This is the King

  362. of the Jews.

  363. Mockery

  364. of this supposed Messiah King.

  365. You hear what they're doing,

  366. right?

  367. It's His identity

  368. that's in question.

  369. Some King this is.

  370. He's seemingly powerless.

  371. Doesn't seem like a king.

  372. Interestingly,

  373. they acknowledge

  374. that He has saved others.

  375. Perhaps they've seen

  376. or heard of those He's healed.

  377. The demons He's cast out.

  378. Even dead people

  379. He's brought back to life.

  380. And that's worried them

  381. a little bit.

  382. But here now,

  383. finally,

  384. they're back in control.

  385. They finally see proof,

  386. they think,

  387. that He has no real power.

  388. That we're really the ones

  389. in charge.

  390. They have won.

  391. They're stronger than He is

  392. after all.

  393. It always reminds me

  394. of the scene

  395. at the stone table

  396. in C.S. Lewis'

  397. The Lion,

  398. The Witch,

  399. and The Wardrobe.

  400. There's Aslan bound

  401. and being killed

  402. and the wicked white witch

  403. and all the evil creatures

  404. dancing around

  405. the great lion

  406. and calling him

  407. this little bound kitty cat

  408. with no power

  409. to scare them.

  410. It seems victory

  411. is in their hands

  412. and Aslan has finally

  413. and decisively

  414. been defeated

  415. and died.

  416. See,

  417. in the minds

  418. of the mocking

  419. religious leaders

  420. and soldiers,

  421. the Messiah,

  422. the coming King

  423. would have always

  424. been stronger, right?

  425. He would always

  426. defeat His foes

  427. and so

  428. this here

  429. is proof

  430. that He's not

  431. who He claims

  432. to be.

  433. Actually,

  434. it's Jesus

  435. who has read

  436. Isaiah 53,

  437. isn't it?

  438. You remember that

  439. from earlier?

  440. It was long.

  441. It said

  442. the Messiah,

  443. the King,

  444. would actually be

  445. a man of sorrows,

  446. pierced,

  447. crushed,

  448. oppressed,

  449. afflicted,

  450. anguish of soul,

  451. the picture

  452. of a suffering servant,

  453. a suffering Savior.

  454. Jesus has been

  455. telling him

  456. that His entire

  457. ministry,

  458. that this is what

  459. the Messiah must do,

  460. right?

  461. This would have

  462. to happen to Him.

  463. It's absolutely

  464. part of His kingship

  465. and it's the way

  466. that He as a king

  467. actually saves others

  468. unlike any other king

  469. they've ever heard of.

  470. They've never considered

  471. that this could really

  472. be the way a king

  473. saves.

  474. Do you see

  475. who Jesus is?

  476. One of the thieves

  477. does,

  478. doesn't He?

  479. by some miracle

  480. of God

  481. in His heart,

  482. one of those

  483. being crucified

  484. on a cross

  485. next to Jesus

  486. sees through

  487. all the mockery

  488. and realizes

  489. the truth.

  490. He sees through

  491. all the seeming

  492. weakness

  493. of this dying king

  494. and He realizes

  495. Jesus'

  496. ultimate strength

  497. that in order

  498. to save Him,

  499. Jesus can't get down.

  500. He must stay

  501. on the cross.

  502. He has to even

  503. correct the first thief,

  504. doesn't He?

  505. Verse 39,

  506. one of the criminals

  507. who were hanged

  508. railed at Him

  509. saying,

  510. are you not the Christ?

  511. Save yourself

  512. and us.

  513. Get down

  514. and help us out here.

  515. But the other

  516. rebuked Him

  517. saying,

  518. do you not fear God

  519. since you are under

  520. the same sentence

  521. of condemnation?

  522. And we indeed

  523. justly,

  524. for we are receiving

  525. the due reward

  526. of our deeds.

  527. These are not

  528. just petty thieves.

  529. They've committed

  530. capital offenses.

  531. They deserve to die

  532. and the thief

  533. sees that

  534. and knows that.

  535. He's guilty

  536. before Rome.

  537. That's why

  538. He's on the cross.

  539. But even more

  540. ominously than that,

  541. do you not fear God?

  542. He sees He's guilty

  543. before God.

  544. Justly under a sentence

  545. of condemnation

  546. for what He's done.

  547. And He sees that

  548. and somehow

  549. He also recognizes

  550. Jesus' innocence,

  551. doesn't He?

  552. But this man

  553. has done nothing wrong.

  554. It's actually

  555. the fourth time

  556. in this chapter

  557. that someone

  558. pronounces Jesus

  559. to have done

  560. nothing wrong.

  561. one after another

  562. has seen

  563. His innocence

  564. even as He

  565. heads to the cross.

  566. And so the thief

  567. sees a righteous king

  568. even as He hangs

  569. on a cross.

  570. And so what He does

  571. is He begs

  572. Jesus for mercy.

  573. He seems to realize

  574. that even as Jesus

  575. heaves His final breaths

  576. on the cross,

  577. there's much more

  578. to this king

  579. than you see.

  580. There's a lot of life

  581. left in Him yet.

  582. And so He asks

  583. the king for what?

  584. Not for immediate relief

  585. from His death sentence,

  586. but for eternal remembrance

  587. by Jesus.

  588. He said,

  589. Jesus, remember me

  590. when you come

  591. into your kingdom.

  592. And then the glorious,

  593. beautiful,

  594. hopeful words

  595. of Jesus,

  596. He said to Him,

  597. truly I say to you,

  598. today you will be with me

  599. in paradise.

  600. A promise

  601. with the immediate hope

  602. of today,

  603. with the unending joy

  604. of with me,

  605. the eternal comfort

  606. of in paradise.

  607. paradise.

  608. What a word to hear

  609. as you die.

  610. What a promise.

  611. Today you will be with me

  612. in paradise.

  613. Simple faith in Jesus

  614. was all the thief had.

  615. Right?

  616. No record of good deeds.

  617. No pattern of trying

  618. to reform His ways.

  619. No time to balance out

  620. the good with the bad

  621. so maybe things will go well

  622. when I die.

  623. Probably, I think,

  624. not even a perfect grasp

  625. of all the intricacies

  626. of reformed theology.

  627. I don't know.

  628. Probably not.

  629. Only a faith

  630. that if Jesus remembered him,

  631. he would be safe.

  632. If this guy remembers me,

  633. I'll be okay.

  634. I trust that the death

  635. of this king

  636. would somehow give him life.

  637. That's all he had.

  638. He had no other opportunity.

  639. Not Jesus,

  640. get down and save me,

  641. but Jesus,

  642. stay on that cross

  643. and save me.

  644. That's his prayer

  645. and that's exactly

  646. what Jesus does,

  647. isn't it?

  648. He achieves

  649. and extends

  650. the forgiveness

  651. he spoke of earlier

  652. in praying

  653. to his father.

  654. He promises the thief

  655. his eternal

  656. and immediate presence

  657. in a paradise.

  658. It's a garden.

  659. The cross is restoring

  660. all of creation

  661. to its good design.

  662. Well, there's another

  663. whole sermon there

  664. for not for this morning.

  665. But Jesus' immediate

  666. and eternal presence

  667. is certain

  668. even though

  669. and actually because

  670. right now

  671. he hangs dying

  672. on a cross.

  673. salvation

  674. by grace alone

  675. through faith alone

  676. in Christ alone.

  677. Hallelujah!

  678. What a Savior!

  679. In that moment

  680. he saves him forever.

  681. I want to give you a picture

  682. of this salvation

  683. that has been

  684. helpful to me.

  685. Many pastors have

  686. used a version of this.

  687. Kids,

  688. you can draw this

  689. if you want

  690. to draw a picture.

  691. I think you'll understand

  692. what we're talking about.

  693. It might help you

  694. to draw it.

  695. But there were three

  696. men

  697. who were crucified

  698. who died on the cross

  699. that Friday.

  700. The first thief

  701. had a lot

  702. of sin

  703. in him.

  704. In his heart.

  705. His deeds,

  706. criminal deeds,

  707. his words of hate

  708. to Jesus

  709. and he hung there

  710. on the cross

  711. receiving the penalty

  712. for that sin.

  713. The due reward

  714. of his deeds.

  715. In other words,

  716. his sin was on him too.

  717. He was paying the price,

  718. carrying the weight

  719. and the burden

  720. of his sin.

  721. The second thief

  722. had a lot of sin

  723. in him too,

  724. didn't he?

  725. We don't know

  726. exactly what they were.

  727. Thieving.

  728. Perhaps creating riots.

  729. Insurrection maybe.

  730. And when he came

  731. to the cross

  732. on that day,

  733. his sin

  734. was also on him

  735. as he walked

  736. and hung there.

  737. He was going

  738. to pay the earthly

  739. and then the eternal penalty

  740. for his sin.

  741. But something changed.

  742. And this is what's

  743. really important

  744. to understand.

  745. Something changed.

  746. A man

  747. whose innocence

  748. this thief noticed

  749. who had no sin

  750. whatsoever in him

  751. was actually there

  752. dying on a cross

  753. next to him

  754. in the place

  755. of real sinners.

  756. Taking a punishment

  757. he didn't deserve.

  758. Dying for other sinners

  759. like you

  760. and me

  761. and like the thief

  762. who looks at him

  763. and says

  764. I trust him.

  765. I want my sin

  766. on him.

  767. And so Jesus

  768. who had no sin

  769. in him

  770. actually has sin

  771. placed on him

  772. on the cross.

  773. The sin in particular

  774. in this moment

  775. of that thief

  776. who's trusting him.

  777. he himself

  778. 1 Peter tells us

  779. bore our sins

  780. in his body

  781. on the tree.

  782. Jesus

  783. with no sin

  784. in him

  785. has sin

  786. placed

  787. on him.

  788. He bears

  789. the penalty.

  790. He takes

  791. the death

  792. and the

  793. wrath

  794. of his father

  795. for sin

  796. so that

  797. as a result

  798. the thief

  799. who trusted him

  800. still hung there

  801. on the cross

  802. with sin

  803. in him.

  804. That was still

  805. a sinful thief.

  806. But as he

  807. trusted Jesus

  808. his sin

  809. went on to Jesus

  810. there was no

  811. sin

  812. on him

  813. anymore.

  814. Instead what?

  815. An eternal hope

  816. promise

  817. from the one

  818. who took

  819. his sin.

  820. Y'all

  821. every single

  822. person

  823. in this room

  824. has

  825. sin

  826. in

  827. him.

  828. Sin

  829. that

  830. deserves

  831. death

  832. and eternal

  833. punishment.

  834. Every

  835. single one

  836. of us

  837. you

  838. and

  839. me.

  840. The question

  841. is

  842. which

  843. thief

  844. are you?

  845. will you

  846. go to

  847. your grave

  848. with the

  849. sin

  850. that is

  851. in you

  852. remaining

  853. on you?

  854. Or

  855. will you

  856. trust

  857. the Savior

  858. who goes

  859. to the

  860. cross

  861. with the

  862. rescue

  863. and forgiveness

  864. of guilty

  865. sinners

  866. on his

  867. heart?

  868. Please

  869. don't leave

  870. here this

  871. morning

  872. uncertain

  873. about the

  874. answer to

  875. that question.

  876. You've

  877. got to

  878. know.

  879. what's

  880. going to

  881. happen

  882. to the

  883. sin

  884. that you

  885. feel

  886. and know

  887. in your

  888. own

  889. heart?

  890. How

  891. will it

  892. be

  893. handled?

  894. Somebody

  895. will pay

  896. for it.

  897. God

  898. is just

  899. and holy.

  900. The question

  901. is will

  902. you

  903. or will

  904. Jesus?

  905. May it

  906. be

  907. that the

  908. forgiving

  909. Savior

  910. is the

  911. one you

  912. trust

  913. to handle

  914. your sin.

  915. Might you

  916. say

  917. with confidence

  918. and joy

  919. he was

  920. pierced

  921. for my

  922. transgressions

  923. he was

  924. crushed

  925. for my

  926. iniquities

  927. by his

  928. wounds

  929. I am

  930. healed.

  931. The message

  932. of the

  933. cross

  934. of Christ

  935. crucified

  936. is the

  937. power of

  938. God

  939. for salvation

  940. amen?

  941. That's our

  942. hope.

  943. And it's

  944. not just

  945. every single

  946. person in

  947. this room

  948. who needs

  949. Jesus'

  950. forgiveness

  951. it's every

  952. single

  953. person

  954. in your

  955. neighborhood

  956. in your

  957. school

  958. in your

  959. workplace

  960. every

  961. single one

  962. of those

  963. people

  964. has sin

  965. in her

  966. sin

  967. deserving

  968. death

  969. eternal

  970. separation

  971. from their

  972. father

  973. and unless

  974. she entrusts

  975. herself

  976. to the

  977. substitute

  978. who hangs

  979. on the

  980. cross

  981. in our

  982. place

  983. she also

  984. has that

  985. sin

  986. on her

  987. do you

  988. understand

  989. that?

  990. Won't you

  991. tell her

  992. and show

  993. her the

  994. good news

  995. of a

  996. forgiving

  997. savior

  998. it's our

  999. only hope

  1000. it's their

  1001. only hope

  1002. see as

  1003. Jesus hangs

  1004. on the

  1005. cross

  1006. we see

  1007. who he

  1008. really is

  1009. don't we

  1010. he's

  1011. innocent

  1012. undeserving

  1013. of death

  1014. in fact

  1015. the only

  1016. person

  1017. who ever

  1018. stands

  1019. that way

  1020. before

  1021. God

  1022. his

  1023. father

  1024. he's

  1025. the

  1026. king

  1027. the

  1028. promised

  1029. messiah

  1030. the

  1031. suffering

  1032. servant

  1033. who

  1034. demonstrates

  1035. what he

  1036. has

  1037. taught

  1038. that glory

  1039. comes from

  1040. going down

  1041. that strength

  1042. is in

  1043. willing

  1044. weakness

  1045. that those

  1046. who appear

  1047. most rejected

  1048. are most

  1049. welcomed

  1050. by the

  1051. true

  1052. king

  1053. he shows

  1054. us

  1055. his heart

  1056. for others

  1057. that he

  1058. came

  1059. to rescue

  1060. to forgive

  1061. even as he

  1062. dies

  1063. reaching out

  1064. to weeping

  1065. women

  1066. to cruel

  1067. enemies

  1068. to a

  1069. dying

  1070. thief

  1071. and ultimately

  1072. to all

  1073. his people

  1074. who will

  1075. ever

  1076. trust

  1077. him

  1078. by staying

  1079. on the

  1080. cross

  1081. for them

  1082. he forgives

  1083. and brings

  1084. desperate

  1085. sinners

  1086. into paradise

  1087. see the identity

  1088. of Jesus

  1089. is not

  1090. merely a

  1091. philosophical

  1092. discussion

  1093. is it

  1094. it's profoundly

  1095. personal

  1096. ask

  1097. ask the

  1098. thief

  1099. only

  1100. the

  1101. innocent

  1102. son of

  1103. God

  1104. son of

  1105. man

  1106. can

  1107. suffer

  1108. in

  1109. my

  1110. place

  1111. and offer

  1112. me

  1113. eternal

  1114. life

  1115. I don't

  1116. deserve

  1117. he's the

  1118. only one

  1119. with space

  1120. to take

  1121. the sin

  1122. that is

  1123. on me

  1124. on to

  1125. him

  1126. he's the

  1127. only one

  1128. who can

  1129. do that

  1130. and the

  1131. good news

  1132. is

  1133. he has

  1134. the heart

  1135. to do

  1136. it

  1137. so sorry

  1138. Jesus was

  1139. committed

  1140. to going

  1141. to that

  1142. cross

  1143. and no

  1144. taunts

  1145. or pleas

  1146. for him

  1147. to get

  1148. down

  1149. or appeals

  1150. to his

  1151. self-love

  1152. could get

  1153. him down

  1154. he is

  1155. committed

  1156. to staying

  1157. there

  1158. for you

  1159. and for

  1160. me

  1161. Jesus

  1162. paid

  1163. it all

  1164. if you

  1165. trust him

  1166. the payday

  1167. for your

  1168. sin

  1169. when the

  1170. bill is

  1171. coming up

  1172. and you

  1173. have to

  1174. give account

  1175. for it

  1176. is not

  1177. ahead of

  1178. you

  1179. but is

  1180. behind

  1181. you

  1182. you

  1183. just

  1184. read

  1185. about

  1186. it

  1187. judgment

  1188. full

  1189. and final

  1190. and punishment

  1191. on your

  1192. sin

  1193. has been

  1194. meted out

  1195. on your

  1196. savior

  1197. and there

  1198. is nothing

  1199. else to

  1200. be paid

  1201. you will

  1202. be with

  1203. him

  1204. free

  1205. from

  1206. sin

  1207. victorious

  1208. over

  1209. death

  1210. forever

  1211. amen

  1212. that's

  1213. the good

  1214. news

  1215. of the

  1216. gospel

  1217. and we

  1218. all

  1219. need

  1220. this

  1221. forgiving

  1222. savior

  1223. don't

  1224. we

  1225. no matter

  1226. where you

  1227. are this

  1228. morning

  1229. listen

  1230. Christian

  1231. some of

  1232. you are

  1233. living

  1234. in

  1235. shame

  1236. you've

  1237. known

  1238. Jesus

  1239. maybe

  1240. trusted

  1241. him

  1242. a long

  1243. time

  1244. but

  1245. you can

  1246. hardly

  1247. walk

  1248. into

  1249. church

  1250. you drag

  1251. yourself

  1252. into

  1253. your

  1254. father's

  1255. presence

  1256. occasionally

  1257. but doesn't

  1258. feel good

  1259. you're

  1260. sure

  1261. that he's

  1262. shaking

  1263. his head

  1264. rolling

  1265. his eyes

  1266. because

  1267. your

  1268. past

  1269. sin

  1270. your

  1271. present

  1272. struggle

  1273. lift up

  1274. your head

  1275. this morning

  1276. hear

  1277. Jesus

  1278. words

  1279. father

  1280. forgive

  1281. them

  1282. he forgives

  1283. soldiers

  1284. nailing him

  1285. to the

  1286. cross

  1287. he forgives

  1288. a thief

  1289. who has

  1290. no chance

  1291. to earn

  1292. it

  1293. he forgives

  1294. you

  1295. completely

  1296. you're

  1297. free

  1298. free to

  1299. sing

  1300. joyfully

  1301. free to

  1302. pray

  1303. confidently

  1304. free to

  1305. live for

  1306. him

  1307. passionately

  1308. some of

  1309. you spend

  1310. a lot

  1311. of time

  1312. around

  1313. Jesus

  1314. you're

  1315. very

  1316. close

  1317. to

  1318. him

  1319. you come

  1320. to

  1321. church

  1322. you're

  1323. near him

  1324. a lot

  1325. but you've

  1326. never

  1327. actually

  1328. in

  1329. faith

  1330. asked

  1331. him

  1332. to

  1333. take

  1334. the

  1335. sin

  1336. in

  1337. you

  1338. on

  1339. him

  1340. don't

  1341. remain

  1342. like

  1343. that

  1344. other

  1345. thief

  1346. don't

  1347. stay

  1348. like

  1349. the

  1350. religious

  1351. leaders

  1352. who

  1353. knew

  1354. a lot

  1355. about

  1356. Jesus

  1357. but

  1358. left

  1359. the

  1360. forgiving

  1361. savior

  1362. at

  1363. arm's

  1364. length

  1365. as

  1366. someone

  1367. much

  1368. less

  1369. than

  1370. a

  1371. real

  1372. king

  1373. happy

  1374. not

  1375. to

  1376. have

  1377. to

  1378. deal

  1379. with

  1380. him

  1381. any

  1382. longer

  1383. listen

  1384. your

  1385. eternity

  1386. can be

  1387. settled

  1388. in an

  1389. instant

  1390. and

  1391. your

  1392. days

  1393. here

  1394. given

  1395. purpose

  1396. and

  1397. meaning

  1398. that

  1399. are

  1400. eternal

  1401. I

  1402. suspect

  1403. some

  1404. of you

  1405. are here

  1406. this

  1407. morning

  1408. and

  1409. you

  1410. have

  1411. always

  1412. written

  1413. Jesus

  1414. off

  1415. you

  1416. have

  1417. spent

  1418. your

  1419. life

  1420. ignoring

  1421. him

  1422. even

  1423. though

  1424. you

  1425. have

  1426. heard

  1427. of

  1428. him

  1429. and

  1430. some

  1431. of

  1432. his

  1433. claims

  1434. I

  1435. am

  1436. glad

  1437. you are

  1438. here

  1439. I

  1440. would

  1441. ask

  1442. you

  1443. to

  1444. consider

  1445. him

  1446. on

  1447. the

  1448. cross

  1449. this

  1450. morning

  1451. who

  1452. is

  1453. he

  1454. why

  1455. was

  1456. he

  1457. there

  1458. either

  1459. an

  1460. utter

  1461. failure

  1462. or

  1463. there is

  1464. eternal

  1465. forgiveness

  1466. one

  1467. of the

  1468. most

  1469. well

  1470. attested

  1471. events

  1472. of human

  1473. history

  1474. Jesus

  1475. of

  1476. Nazareth

  1477. on

  1478. the

  1479. cross

  1480. why

  1481. he

  1482. says

  1483. to

  1484. forgive

  1485. really

  1486. big

  1487. sinners

  1488. you're

  1489. not

  1490. beyond

  1491. hope

  1492. in your

  1493. brokenness

  1494. pain

  1495. he

  1496. says

  1497. to

  1498. enter

  1499. into

  1500. the

  1501. sorrows

  1502. of

  1503. the

  1504. deepest

  1505. suffering

  1506. ones

  1507. you're

  1508. not

  1509. alone

  1510. in

  1511. your

  1512. pain

  1513. he

  1514. says

  1515. he's

  1516. there

  1517. to

  1518. make

  1519. right

  1520. every

  1521. wrong

  1522. including

  1523. yours

  1524. forever

  1525. with

  1526. him

  1527. you're

  1528. not

  1529. stuck

  1530. fending

  1531. for

  1532. yourself

  1533. you've

  1534. got

  1535. one

  1536. who

  1537. will

  1538. fight

  1539. and

  1540. win

  1541. for

  1542. you

  1543. over

  1544. your

  1545. greatest

  1546. enemies

  1547. there

  1548. is

  1549. forgiveness

  1550. there

  1551. is

  1552. purpose

  1553. there

  1554. is

  1555. eternal

  1556. hope

  1557. because

  1558. there

  1559. is

  1560. a

  1561. savior

  1562. hallelujah

  1563. if

  1564. you

  1565. don't

  1566. know

  1567. him

  1568. you

  1569. can

  1570. trust

  1571. him

  1572. today

  1573. won't

  1574. you

  1575. trust

  1576. him

  1577. if

  1578. you

  1579. do

  1580. know

  1581. him

  1582. oh

  1583. friends

  1584. there

  1585. are

  1586. so

  1587. many

  1588. not

  1589. in

  1590. this

  1591. room

  1592. right

  1593. now

  1594. who

  1595. need

  1596. to

  1597. know

  1598. him

  1599. let's

  1600. pray

  1601. Jesus

  1602. for

  1603. your

  1604. death

  1605. in

  1606. our

  1607. place

  1608. we

  1609. can

  1610. never

  1611. thank

  1612. you

  1613. enough

  1614. we

  1615. worship

  1616. you

  1617. we

  1618. trust

  1619. in

  1620. you

  1621. and

  1622. we

  1623. ask

  1624. that

  1625. you

  1626. would

  1627. keep

  1628. Satan

  1629. from

  1630. our

  1631. hearts

  1632. and

  1633. allow

  1634. us

  1635. to

  1636. believe

  1637. that

  1638. someone

  1639. could

  1640. truly

  1641. forgive

  1642. us

  1643. completely

  1644. fully

  1645. and

  1646. finally

  1647. and

  1648. forever

  1649. that

  1650. you

  1651. would

  1652. love

  1653. us

  1654. that

  1655. much

  1656. would

  1657. you

  1658. so

  1659. overwhelm

  1660. us

  1661. with

  1662. the

  1663. joy

  1664. of

  1665. that

  1666. that

  1667. we

  1668. can't

  1669. help

  1670. but

  1671. shout

  1672. it

  1673. from

  1674. the

  1675. rooftops

  1676. to

  1677. be

  1678. the

  1679. feet

  1680. that

  1681. bring

  1682. good

  1683. news

  1684. to

  1685. many

  1686. who

  1687. need

  1688. a

  1689. savior

  1690. we

  1691. are

  1692. the

  1693. first

  1694. ones

  1695. who

  1696. need

  1697. him

  1698. and

  1699. so

  1700. father

  1701. thank

  1702. you

  1703. for

  1704. sending

  1705. him

  1706. for

  1707. us

  1708. give

  1709. us

  1710. joy

  1711. in

  1712. him

  1713. even

  1714. today

  1715. we

  1716. ask

  1717. in

  1718. his

  1719. name

  1720. amen
