  1. You are listening to a message from Southwood Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama.

  2. Our passion is to experience and express grace.

  3. Join us.

  4. Amen.

  5. Thank you all so much.

  6. I love that song, He has beaten death at death's own game.

  7. Isn't that the story of the Easter week and of the gospel message?

  8. As I set up here for just a minute, I'm excited about Easter.

  9. I'm really thankful for Cole's words.

  10. I hope you're able to celebrate with us at some of these special events this week.

  11. And also invite your friends to be a part of that.

  12. You'll see even as you go look at the events, there are ways you can serve to help us be prepared to welcome people.

  13. We do need your help with that, with food and other ways that you welcome people.

  14. But it's because we're celebrating good news, right?

  15. That's why we would do this.

  16. That's why you'd come to a service on a Thursday night.

  17. Because there's good news that is worth celebrating and it's worth sharing, isn't it?

  18. Both of those things we get the privilege of doing this week.

  19. Amen?

  20. Let's do that together.

  21. Easter Sunday is coming.

  22. Easter Sunday is coming.

  23. But in our study in Luke, it's still Friday.

  24. From the praises of Palm Sunday that we've been enjoying this morning, now we've come to the crucifixion itself on Friday morning.

  25. Last week we saw Jesus as the forgiving Savior, even as He was nailed to the cross, having mercy on those around Him.

  26. He promises eternal life with Him to the dying thief, doesn't He?

  27. And now it's noon.

  28. It doesn't look or feel like it here outside Jerusalem.

  29. And we're going to hear the rest of the story of the death of Jesus.

  30. Luke chapter 23.

    Luke 23 chapter mention

  31. We'll pick up the reading at verse 44.

  32. This is God's holy Word.

  33. It was now about the sixth hour, noon, and there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour, while the sun's light failed.

  34. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two.

  35. Then Jesus, calling out with a loud voice, said,

  36. Father, into Your hands I commit My spirit.

  37. And having said this, He breathed His last.

  38. Now when the centurion saw what had taken place, he praised God, saying,

  39. Certainly this man was innocent.

  40. And all the crowds that had assembled for this spectacle, when they saw what had taken place, returned home beating their breasts.

  41. And all his acquaintances and the women who had followed him from Galilee stood at a distance watching these things.

  42. Now there was a man named Joseph from the Jewish town of Arimathea.

  43. He was a member of the council, a good and righteous man, who had not consented to their decision and action.

  44. And he was looking for the kingdom of God.

  45. This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.

  46. Then he took it down and wrapped it in a linen shroud and laid him in a tomb cut in stone where no one had ever yet been laid.

  47. It was the day of preparation and the Sabbath was beginning.

  48. The women who had come with him from Galilee followed and saw the tomb and how his body was laid.

  49. Then they returned and prepared spices and ointments.

  50. On the Sabbath they rested according to the commandment.

  51. Let's pray.

  52. Father, very somber words for sure as we hear of the death of our Savior.

  53. Would you have it to be that we would understand not merely what happened, but why and why each and every one of us needs his death and needs to trust the Savior.

  54. Father, speak to us by your Spirit through your Word.

  55. We need it.

  56. We come sinful and needy and weak and ask that you would speak and that you would heal and that you would give life.

  57. In Jesus' name.

  58. Amen.

  59. Jesus really died.

  60. Jesus really died.

  61. When we read that a few moments ago.

  62. But I just want to acknowledge up front how utterly remarkable that reality is.

  63. Jesus really died.

  64. The Lord of life expires.

  65. The promised Messiah King who healed others who were dying.

  66. Who walked through crowds prepared to kill Him.

  67. Hangs on the cross and breathes His last.

  68. The heart of the perfect Son of God that beats with love, beats no more.

  69. I considered stopping this sermon right there and having us ponder that puzzle.

  70. We've heard this so many times that perhaps reading over it in one verse is old hat and we think,

  71. yeah, sure, that's what happens next.

  72. Can you even wrap your mind around that reality this morning?

  73. It's hard, isn't it?

  74. It's hard to imagine Jesus really died.

  75. But Jesus has been telling us all along that His death is absolutely essential.

  76. That it's vital that it must happen, right?

  77. It's vital to who He is and why He has come.

  78. In fact, Paul tells us that when he starts saying,

  79. here are the things that are most important, what do they start with?

  80. That Christ Jesus died and that He was buried.

  81. Two things we just read about.

  82. What's most important for us to know in all the world are those truths.

  83. Luke makes sure that we don't miss either of them.

  84. That's a big part of this passage.

  85. That as usual, he is documenting with eyewitnesses.

  86. This time a wide range of eyewitnesses.

  87. Roman centurions.

  88. Jewish women.

  89. Crowds from outside Jerusalem.

  90. A Jewish religious leader.

  91. Greatly respected.

  92. They all see and can affirm what happens here.

  93. It's important to Luke to establish that Jesus really died.

  94. Because Jesus really died.

  95. Perhaps that seems normal to us.

  96. But it wouldn't have earned His followers any points, would it?

  97. To talk about their leader who had died.

  98. Certainly would seem easier to promote a powerful, conquering Messiah.

  99. Because all the people around were looking for one, weren't they?

  100. They were longing for that.

  101. As I was reminded recently, Islam teaches that part of Jesus' good name and being a great person is that He never actually died.

  102. But rather that Allah brought Jesus to Himself.

  103. That's the way to make someone you respect important, right?

  104. Unless that's not the way it happened.

  105. Luke wants the historical truth, remember?

  106. No matter how hard it is.

  107. Luke's eyewitnesses walk with Jesus all week.

  108. And all weekend.

  109. And follow Him every step of the way to the cross.

  110. Until His side is pierced.

  111. His blood and water pour out.

  112. He's taken, wrapped up, buried in a tomb.

  113. Hundreds of these witnesses that are in the city this day will, in coming months,

  114. give their lives for the truth of Jesus' death and resurrection.

  115. That's how sure they are of what they saw.

  116. They themselves will die for their belief in that truth.

  117. Jesus really dies.

  118. Luke wants us to know that.

  119. But he also wants us to see a couple of other occurrences around Jesus' death that show us the significance of it.

  120. Why did He die?

  121. Why not another way?

  122. What did Jesus' death accomplish?

  123. First, notice that Jesus in His death took our judgment.

  124. We saw last week how Jesus kept speaking of repentance and forgiveness at the cross.

  125. But now, here Luke highlights the just penalty that our sin deserves.

  126. Verse 44, it was now about the sixth hour and there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour while the sun's light failed.

  127. Noon to three o'clock.

  128. Darkness.

  129. Not just a cloudy day.

  130. The sun's light goes out.

  131. That's amazing.

  132. That's what the sun does, isn't it?

  133. The sun's light fails.

  134. I'm not sure exactly how God worked this out.

  135. But it's clear that creation is groaning as Jesus hangs on the cross.

  136. In particular, this darkness is a picture of God's judgment.

  137. We could read about it in many prophets.

  138. Joel, Zephaniah.

  139. But this morning, I want to look briefly at Amos chapter 8 where God is speaking of His judgment on His people.

    Amos 8 chapter mention

  140. On the day of the Lord, His coming judgment.

  141. And I'll just read a couple of the verses that describe it.

  142. On that day, declares the Lord God,

  143. I will make the sun go down at noon and darken the earth in broad daylight.

  144. I'll turn your feasts into mourning.

  145. All your songs into lamentation.

  146. I'll bring sackcloth on every waist and baldness on every head.

  147. I will make it like the mourning for an only son.

  148. And the end of it like a bitter day.

  149. A day of mourning.

  150. Like mourning for an only son.

  151. Interesting that God would cast it in those terms, isn't it?

  152. The darkness that comes.

  153. A picture of the judgment of God.

  154. Not merely on those who are killing His son.

  155. But on sin.

  156. See, it's the sin of God's creatures.

  157. Our rebellion against Him in our thoughts, words, attitudes, actions.

  158. That incites His just wrath, isn't it?

  159. Forgiveness that we've been talking about is needed at the cross

  160. because a holy God has been repeatedly and willfully turned against.

  161. People, you and me included, have decided to pursue our own ways.

  162. To find life and fulfillment and things and people other than God.

  163. And the Bible tells us the wages of that sin is death.

  164. That's what our sin deserves.

  165. The wrath and curse of God forever.

  166. God tells us Himself He will not and cannot overlook sin and clear guilty people.

  167. He's too righteous.

  168. Too good of a judge to declare guilty people innocent, isn't He?

  169. He won't do it.

  170. So sin must be punished.

  171. And the darkness moves in.

  172. You can feel that sin must be punished.

  173. This day will not be the only day,

  174. but one particular glimpse of God's judgment breaking into human history.

  175. See, when God's just judgment on your sin shows up,

  176. it's not a small thing.

  177. I've had people say to me things like,

  178. yeah, I deserve to lose that job.

  179. Or to lose that relationship.

  180. Or even to lose that game.

  181. Because I really messed up.

  182. God was getting me back.

  183. Giving me what I deserved.

  184. Friends,

  185. do we not see the true awfulness of our sin?

  186. The game?

  187. If God was getting you back,

  188. making you pay for your sin,

  189. it would have been far, far worse than that, yes?

  190. Sin deserves death.

  191. When it gets its just reward,

  192. that's the only thing.

  193. Death and death forever.

  194. I want to show you a picture of what happened on that cross

  195. that I can still remember my RUF campus minister showing me in college.

  196. It seems like a good time of year for eggs, right?

  197. Kids, you may be looking forward to some eggs,

  198. but this morning, it's not looking so good for the egg.

  199. I've got an egg and a hammer for this illustration.

  200. It's not looking great for the egg, is it?

  201. But see, the egg represents us.

  202. Okay?

  203. And no matter how hard we try

  204. and all the good things we do

  205. to try to make ourselves look clean

  206. and shiny on the outside,

  207. we go to church and we do good things,

  208. and it's all still an eggshell.

  209. That's all we can do on our own

  210. because of our sin.

  211. Leaves us a little bit fragile, doesn't it?

  212. The hammer in this picture represents God's wrath

  213. because of our sin,

  214. we deserve to be crushed by God.

  215. That's what should happen to our sin, right?

  216. We should be crushed by God forever.

  217. And in God's wrath comes,

  218. His just judgment comes on sin and sinners.

  219. And you see what happens

  220. when God's just judgment comes on our sin is...

  221. Actually, that's not exactly how the story goes, is it?

  222. The one we read this morning,

  223. actually in God's story,

  224. something else happens, doesn't it?

  225. And it's not that the egg gets any better.

  226. It's not that the hammer goes away.

  227. But something else steps in.

  228. This paint can here will represent Jesus.

  229. Jesus comes and on the cross,

  230. what does Jesus do?

  231. Jesus steps in,

  232. into the place where those cursed sinners

  233. are supposed to be.

  234. And He stands there on the cross

  235. where the sinners were.

  236. And God says that He decided,

  237. instead of His wrath coming on our sin,

  238. He decided to crush Jesus, right?

  239. That the hammer of God's wrath

  240. really did come down on Jesus.

  241. Nobody's sleeping anymore, is there?

  242. That Jesus was crushed

  243. in our place.

  244. That He took the wrath of God

  245. that was meant for us

  246. and He protected us.

  247. That we're safe because

  248. He covered us and protected us.

  249. See, Jesus didn't deserve to die at all,

  250. did He?

  251. Even the soldier in charge

  252. of putting Him on the cross

  253. could see that.

  254. Certainly, this man was innocent.

  255. Righteous.

  256. That's five times now,

  257. in case you're counting,

  258. in one day that someone has seen this

  259. about Jesus.

  260. So if Jesus didn't have any sin,

  261. God can't call an innocent person

  262. guilty, can He?

  263. Just like He can't call

  264. a guilty person innocent,

  265. God can't call an innocent person guilty.

  266. So if Jesus didn't have any sin,

  267. then whose sin is He dying for?

  268. When we read of His death on the cross,

  269. it has to be sin.

  270. That's what gets death.

  271. He's dying for your sin.

  272. My sin.

  273. The sin of His people.

  274. Did you notice that that day of judgment

  275. judgment was supposed to be God's judgment

  276. coming on His people?

  277. But it actually,

  278. as darkness falls and someone dies,

  279. it's actually coming on Jesus.

  280. Isn't it?

  281. The hammer of God's wrath

  282. falls on Jesus

  283. so that everyone who trusts Him,

  284. who runs to Him for refuge,

  285. no matter how weak His shell is,

  286. no matter how dirty her past is,

  287. it doesn't really matter if the shell's white

  288. or dark or muddy,

  289. everyone who runs and finds refuge in Jesus

  290. is safe.

  291. If Jesus didn't really die,

  292. then this hammer is still coming down on us.

  293. But because He did,

  294. Jesus took our judgment,

  295. which was what?

  296. Guilty.

  297. Deserving death.

  298. And we get His judgment.

  299. Innocent.

  300. Life.

  301. Forever.

  302. Isn't that amazing?

  303. That He would die,

  304. that He would be crushed in your place?

  305. He's the only place to run

  306. from what you deserve.

  307. And instead of getting justice,

  308. to get grace never-ending.

  309. If you can imagine it,

  310. the second picture Luke gives us

  311. makes it even better than that.

  312. He also shows us how Jesus in His death

  313. welcomed us home.

  314. See, home is where God is.

  315. Mankind was created to live with God.

  316. That's what makes us at home.

  317. To have this relationship with Him

  318. that's so special,

  319. but sin messed that up, didn't it?

  320. It didn't merely earn death,

  321. although it did that,

  322. but it separated us from God.

  323. Remember what happened to Adam and Eve

  324. in the very first sin?

  325. What do they have to do?

  326. They've been walking with God

  327. in the garden,

  328. and now they're sent away.

  329. Out of His presence.

  330. Away from Him.

  331. Out of the garden.

  332. Out of their home with Him.

  333. And so when God comes in the Bible

  334. to live with His people,

  335. sometimes it's in the tabernacle,

  336. or then it's in the temple.

  337. It's not like it used to be.

  338. There's not walking and talking

  339. with God in the garden.

  340. There's a barrier, isn't there,

  341. between God and people.

  342. In the Jerusalem temple,

  343. it's this really thick curtain

  344. before the Holy of Holies,

  345. the place where God lives.

  346. And it requires many sacrifices

  347. to get one man into that place

  348. one day a year,

  349. and that's all.

  350. No one else.

  351. But in this dramatic moment

  352. of darkness descending on Jerusalem,

  353. the Son of God breathing His last breaths,

  354. God reaches down, as it were,

  355. to that curtain.

  356. Verse 45,

  357. and the curtain of the temple

  358. was torn in two.

  359. The curtain that hung there from the top

  360. ripped all the way down to the bottom

  361. and laid aside.

  362. No longer is God's presence

  363. with His people

  364. mediated through that curtain

  365. and those sacrifices.

  366. No, now through the death of Jesus,

  367. God welcomes His people home

  368. where they're meant to be.

  369. Do you see in that the restoration

  370. of that relationship,

  371. of the fellowship,

  372. of the creational purpose

  373. for which God always intended it,

  374. were to live in paradise

  375. with Him

  376. in His presence?

  377. I'm not making this up

  378. from a little detail in Luke.

  379. Hebrews chapter 10 says this,

    Hebrews 10 chapter mention

  380. we have confidence

  381. to enter the holy places

  382. by the blood of Jesus,

  383. by the new and living way

  384. that He opened for us

  385. through the curtain

  386. that is through His flesh.

  387. You see His body

  388. and His blood

  389. mentioned there?

  390. What Jesus has done

  391. is given us

  392. now unlimited access

  393. to God,

  394. to a holy God

  395. for unholy people.

  396. All of God's people

  397. now have access

  398. into His presence.

  399. In fact,

  400. even Jesus,

  401. who we're told elsewhere,

  402. has just called out,

  403. my God, my God,

  404. why have you forsaken me?

  405. As He bears sins

  406. on the cross,

  407. says,

  408. verse 46,

  409. Father.

  410. The intimacy

  411. of the Trinity

  412. has been separated

  413. as never before.

  414. Why have you forsaken me?

  415. And yet,

  416. in the darkest moment,

  417. even there,

  418. the Father

  419. is there.

  420. And so now,

  421. all His children,

  422. by faith in Jesus,

  423. can come home

  424. to their Father

  425. anytime,

  426. in the deepest darkness

  427. of their lives.

  428. Not through their great efforts,

  429. not by bringing enough money

  430. to church with them,

  431. not through their great sacrifices,

  432. but through the single

  433. sacrifice of Jesus,

  434. we come home.

  435. See,

  436. Jesus doesn't just

  437. protect us

  438. from God's wrath

  439. and then leave us

  440. living life

  441. fragile

  442. and alone

  443. and isolated

  444. and with no more protection.

  445. No.

  446. He dies

  447. to welcome us

  448. into God's family,

  449. to bring us home

  450. to our Father

  451. so that we always

  452. live in His presence

  453. even now.

  454. There's a door

  455. in this hallway

  456. beside the sanctuary

  457. that says

  458. private

  459. on it.

  460. I want to tell you

  461. a secret about that.

  462. Most of you have never

  463. been through that door.

  464. On the other side

  465. of that door

  466. is the pastor's study.

  467. It's where

  468. on many mornings,

  469. especially Thursday mornings,

  470. I'm studying

  471. and writing sermons

  472. and no one else

  473. can come in.

  474. The staff jokes

  475. that they're

  476. not allowed

  477. into the inner sanctum

  478. then.

  479. The doors are closed.

  480. No one gets in.

  481. Okay?

  482. But last year,

  483. almost every Thursday morning

  484. around 9.30

  485. as the ladies

  486. were gathering

  487. in their small groups

  488. for Bible study

  489. and I was sitting

  490. in my chair,

  491. I would hear

  492. some little feet

  493. running down

  494. the hallway

  495. towards that door

  496. and I would jump up

  497. out of my sermon

  498. writing chair

  499. and I would run

  500. over to the door

  501. and my five-year-old

  502. daughter, Lily,

  503. would come running in

  504. and jump up

  505. into my arms

  506. and give me a big hug.

  507. It's a great way

  508. to start your Thursday.

  509. I was always glad

  510. to take a break

  511. for that.

  512. I'm going to ask you

  513. a question I think

  514. you'll know the answer to.

  515. Why for her,

  516. when even the other

  517. pastors were locked out?

  518. Why for her?

  519. Because she's my child,

  520. right?

  521. She has access.

  522. Anytime she wants,

  523. she can run

  524. into my arms

  525. and be at home.

  526. That's what Jesus

  527. is making us

  528. on the cross.

  529. Children

  530. who can run

  531. into the arms

  532. of their father.

  533. See, many people

  534. see in this passage

  535. a great example

  536. of how to die.

  537. Running into the arms

  538. of our father

  539. at death.

  540. And that's certainly here.

  541. Jesus, in his final hours,

  542. thinks of others.

  543. Quotes Scripture.

  544. Trusts God's strength.

  545. Follows God's plan.

  546. And even in his last breath,

  547. entrusts himself

  548. to his father's

  549. faithful care.

  550. Care.

  551. It's a great,

  552. great picture for us

  553. of how to die.

  554. Pastor Jimmy Agan says,

  555. even at the moment

  556. of death,

  557. Jesus would rather

  558. entrust himself

  559. to his father's

  560. steadfast love

  561. than attempt

  562. to deliver himself.

  563. It's good stuff.

  564. I need to start

  565. living that way now.

  566. And it is true

  567. that the death

  568. of Jesus

  569. changes death

  570. for us.

  571. Colin Smith writes,

  572. Christ's death

  573. changes death

  574. for all his people.

  575. When you die,

  576. you will not carry

  577. your sin and guilt

  578. into your death

  579. because he carried it

  580. into his death

  581. for you.

  582. If you are in Christ,

  583. you will never know

  584. what it is like

  585. to die

  586. a sin-bearing death.

  587. Amen?

  588. Yes.

  589. Yes.

  590. As we consider

  591. facing death

  592. one day,

  593. the confidence

  594. and humility

  595. and trust

  596. of Jesus

  597. can be ours

  598. because we learn

  599. from him

  600. and because he

  601. bore our sins

  602. and took our punishment.

  603. That's good news.

  604. But y'all,

  605. Jesus didn't die

  606. primarily

  607. to give us

  608. an example

  609. of how to die.

  610. but rather

  611. to give us

  612. an empowerment

  613. for how to live

  614. right now

  615. today

  616. where he has

  617. placed us.

  618. He died

  619. to tear the curtain

  620. so that we could

  621. run home

  622. into the arms

  623. of our heavenly

  624. father

  625. now.

  626. Yeah,

  627. a lot of times

  628. we live like

  629. that curtain

  630. is still there,

  631. don't we?

  632. I only really

  633. talk to God

  634. on Sunday.

  635. Only the pastor

  636. can really pray

  637. especially about

  638. important things.

  639. I better not

  640. try something

  641. big and tough

  642. for God,

  643. something risky.

  644. I don't want

  645. to risk failing.

  646. He might turn

  647. his back on me.

  648. You know,

  649. when I'm struggling

  650. with sin,

  651. I better keep

  652. my distance

  653. from God

  654. for a while.

  655. No,

  656. no,

  657. no,

  658. no,

  659. because of

  660. Jesus,

  661. the relationship

  662. with God

  663. is yours

  664. now.

  665. Not just

  666. one day,

  667. someday

  668. in heaven.

  669. Let me finish

  670. the Hebrews passage

  671. where he tells us

  672. how to live

  673. because of the

  674. torn curtain.

  675. Since we have

  676. confidence to

  677. enter the holy

  678. places by the

  679. blood of Jesus,

  680. by the new

  681. and living way

  682. that he opened

  683. for us through

  684. the curtain,

  685. that is through

  686. his flesh,

  687. since we have

  688. a great priest

  689. over the house

  690. of God,

  691. all of those

  692. things we have

  693. now.

  694. let us

  695. now draw

  696. near with

  697. a true

  698. heart,

  699. in full

  700. assurance of

  701. faith,

  702. with our

  703. hearts sprinkled

  704. clean from

  705. an evil

  706. conscience,

  707. and our

  708. bodies washed

  709. with pure

  710. water.

  711. Let us

  712. hold fast

  713. the confession

  714. of our hope

  715. without wavering,

  716. for he who

  717. promised

  718. is faithful.

  719. Brothers

  720. and sisters,

  721. let us

  722. draw near

  723. often.

  724. Let us

  725. hold fast

  726. always

  727. because he

  728. is

  729. faithful.

  730. You're his

  731. child.

  732. He is your

  733. father who

  734. loves you

  735. and you can

  736. run into his

  737. arms anytime

  738. now.

  739. Lily runs

  740. into my

  741. office partly

  742. because as

  743. a child,

  744. her eye

  745. line,

  746. her line

  747. of sight

  748. is too

  749. low to

  750. read the

  751. word private

  752. on the

  753. door.

  754. She hasn't

  755. noticed it

  756. yet.

  757. If she

  758. ever grows

  759. up and

  760. becomes an

  761. adult who's

  762. taller,

  763. who can read

  764. that sign

  765. and stops

  766. coming into

  767. my office,

  768. I'll tear

  769. that sign

  770. down.

  771. I assure

  772. you I

  773. will.

  774. I will.

  775. I will.

  776. I will.

  777. I will.

  778. I will.

  779. I will.

  780. I will.

  781. I will.

  782. I will.

  783. Have you

  784. grown up

  785. too much

  786. to remember

  787. you're his

  788. child?

  789. And your

  790. father has

  791. sent his

  792. son so

  793. that you

  794. can live

  795. with him

  796. and come

  797. to him

  798. anytime

  799. in any

  800. situation.

  801. He loves

  802. you so

  803. much that

  804. he tears

  805. the curtain

  806. down so

  807. you can be

  808. with him.

  809. Colin Smith

  810. again.

  811. When our

  812. sin reached

  813. its full

  814. horror,

  815. at the

  816. worst

  817. possible

  818. moment,

  819. God's

  820. love was

  821. displayed in

  822. all its

  823. glory.

  824. If you

  825. doubt God's

  826. love for

  827. you,

  828. look at

  829. the cross.

  830. No other

  831. love can

  832. match this.

  833. Nothing else

  834. in our

  835. experience can

  836. come close.

  837. God's love

  838. for us in

  839. Christ is

  840. greater than

  841. we ever

  842. dared

  843. dream.

  844. the love

  845. of God

  846. in Christ

  847. is a

  848. beautiful

  849. thing to

  850. remember as

  851. we prepare

  852. to come

  853. to this

  854. table.

  855. Notice

  856. in verse

  857. 46,

  858. Luke tells

  859. us,

  860. Jesus

  861. called out

  862. with a

  863. loud voice

  864. his final

  865. words,

  866. Father,

  867. into your

  868. hands I

  869. commit my

  870. spirit.

  871. Shockingly,

  872. with almost

  873. no air

  874. left in

  875. his lungs

  876. on the

  877. cross,

  878. Jesus

  879. calls out

  880. in a

  881. loud voice,

  882. y'all,

  883. that doesn't

  884. happen.

  885. You've never

  886. been to a

  887. crucifixion,

  888. that's not

  889. how it

  890. ends.

  891. Jesus

  892. calls out

  893. in a

  894. loud voice

  895. and actively

  896. entrusts his

  897. spirit to

  898. his Father.

  899. Why is Luke

  900. highlighting this?

  901. I think it's

  902. because Jesus

  903. is showing

  904. us that no

  905. one takes

  906. his life

  907. from him.

  908. He lays

  909. it down

  910. of his own

  911. accord as

  912. he told us.

  913. Maybe this is

  914. part of what

  915. made the

  916. centurion

  917. believe he

  918. was the

  919. innocent son

  920. of God.

  921. He was

  922. close enough

  923. to see

  924. the incredible

  925. love that

  926. sent Jesus

  927. to the

  928. cross

  929. purposefully.

  930. He knew

  931. where he was

  932. going and

  933. he went

  934. there to

  935. take the

  936. judgment for

  937. your sins

  938. and to

  939. welcome you

  940. home to

  941. your Father

  942. and to a

  943. table like

  944. this one

  945. where the

  946. Father eats

  947. with you.

  948. Knowing that

  949. that cross

  950. was coming,

  951. Jesus

  952. just 24

  953. hours earlier

  954. sat with

  955. his disciples

  956. and he took

  957. bread

  958. and he broke

  959. it

  960. and gave

  961. it to

  962. him and

  963. said,

  964. take,

  965. eat,

  966. this is

  967. my body

  968. broken for

  969. you,

  970. do this

  971. in remembrance

  972. of me.

  973. And then

  974. he took

  975. the cup

  976. and said,

  977. this cup

  978. is the new

  979. covenant

  980. in my blood.

  981. Shed for

  982. many for the

  983. forgiveness of

  984. sins,

  985. drink from

  986. it,

  987. all of you.

  988. He wasn't

  989. confused about

  990. where he was

  991. headed.

  992. and he

  993. went there

  994. for you

  995. and for

  996. me

  997. because of

  998. his great

  999. love for

  1000. you.

  1001. Let's pray.

  1002. Jesus,

  1003. my sins

  1004. are enough

  1005. for you

  1006. to have

  1007. needed to

  1008. die

  1009. for me

  1010. to know

  1011. my Father.

  1012. Our sins

  1013. are greater

  1014. than we

  1015. can count

  1016. and we

  1017. thank you.

  1018. Not just

  1019. for words,

  1020. but for

  1021. your body

  1022. and blood

  1023. given to

  1024. us that

  1025. we can

  1026. touch

  1027. and smell

  1028. and taste

  1029. this morning

  1030. and remember

  1031. your love

  1032. and rejoice

  1033. in it.

  1034. Would these

  1035. strengthen our

  1036. faith?

  1037. They're common

  1038. elements,

  1039. but Father,

  1040. you use them

  1041. for holy

  1042. purposes in

  1043. our hearts

  1044. and you're

  1045. here meeting

  1046. with us

  1047. by your

  1048. spirit.

  1049. We give

  1050. you praise

  1051. and thanks

  1052. in Jesus'

  1053. name.

  1054. Amen.

  1055. This table

  1056. is not

  1057. Southwood's

  1058. table

  1059. or the

  1060. Presbyterian

  1061. church's.

  1062. It's the

  1063. Lord's

  1064. table.

  1065. And He

  1066. invites all

  1067. of us

  1068. who have

  1069. come home

  1070. to the

  1071. Father

  1072. through the

  1073. death of

  1074. Jesus

  1075. in our

  1076. place,

  1077. who have

  1078. baptized

  1079. Christians

  1080. from any

  1081. church

  1082. that preaches

  1083. salvation

  1084. through Christ

  1085. alone

  1086. to come

  1087. and celebrate

  1088. with us.

  1089. Listen,

  1090. if you

  1091. don't

  1092. trust

  1093. Jesus

  1094. to be

  1095. the

  1096. solution

  1097. to

  1098. your

  1099. problem

  1100. with

  1101. sin,

  1102. then don't

  1103. come

  1104. and partake

  1105. of these

  1106. elements

  1107. this morning.

  1108. Don't come

  1109. and say

  1110. outwardly

  1111. something that

  1112. you don't

  1113. believe to be

  1114. true

  1115. inwardly.

  1116. We wouldn't

  1117. ask you to

  1118. do that

  1119. at all.

  1120. Please know

  1121. you're welcome

  1122. to come

  1123. as we do

  1124. to these

  1125. tables and

  1126. just say,

  1127. will you pray

  1128. with me?

  1129. We'd love

  1130. to do

  1131. that.

  1132. But rather

  1133. than coming

  1134. to a table

  1135. and taking

  1136. bread and

  1137. juice,

  1138. we'd love

  1139. to talk

  1140. with you

  1141. about

  1142. Jesus

  1143. himself

  1144. and how

  1145. he is

  1146. the one,

  1147. the only

  1148. one,

  1149. who can

  1150. deal with

  1151. our sin,

  1152. yours and

  1153. ours.

  1154. Listen,

  1155. if you do

  1156. trust him,

  1157. if he's

  1158. your savior,

  1159. draw near

  1160. to God

  1161. this morning

  1162. through

  1163. this bread

  1164. and juice,

  1165. come through

  1166. the body

  1167. and blood

  1168. of Jesus

  1169. and don't

  1170. just take

  1171. bread and

  1172. juice,

  1173. but meet

  1174. with God.

  1175. Draw near

  1176. to him,

  1177. hold fast

  1178. to him,

  1179. encourage your

  1180. brothers and

  1181. sisters to

  1182. trust him.

  1183. That's why

  1184. we come.

  1185. We come

  1186. because Jesus

  1187. has died for

  1188. our sins

  1189. so that we

  1190. can come

  1191. and run

  1192. into the arms

  1193. of our

  1194. father this

  1195. morning and

  1196. know him

  1197. and trust

  1198. him and

  1199. love him

  1200. more.

  1201. Our host

  1202. team will

  1203. usher you

  1204. to tables

  1205. forward,

  1206. and back

  1207. as we

  1208. celebrate

  1209. together

  1210. and draw

  1211. our strength

  1212. from his

  1213. grace.

  1214. Let's do

  1215. that now.

  1216. For more
