  1. You are listening to a message from Southwood Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama.

  2. Our passion is to experience and express grace.

  3. Join us.

  4. As we begin our sermon this morning, I'd like to invite the kids to come up here and sit

  5. on the stairs with me for a couple of minutes.

  6. I want to talk with you.

  7. Look, you can sit with Miss Angela too.

  8. It's going to be fun.

  9. All right.

  10. Just come on up here.

  11. See if you can get where you can see me.

  12. There's some seats down here in front of the steps.

  13. I want to tell you all how glad we are that you all are in here worshiping God with us

  14. every week.

  15. Isn't it fun to be in here and get to celebrate how much God loves us?

  16. That's awesome, isn't it?

  17. You get to sing with us and pray with us and get to be a part of the baptism.

  18. We're just really glad that you all are in here with us.

  19. Sometimes, at this part of the service, Pastor Will talks for a long time, doesn't he?

  20. Does anybody think sometimes Pastor Will talks too long?

  21. That's not very nice.

  22. Put your hands down.

  23. Okay.

  24. It's true.

  25. It's true.

  26. Sometimes, it's a little bit too long.

  27. But some of y'all haven't usually been in here when we're having the sermon, when we're studying

  28. God's Word together.

  29. And this summer may be the first time that you're staying in here with us.

  30. And we want you to know how important that is because we love God's Word.

  31. Because God tells us in it how much He loves us and tells us what it means for us to be

  32. His people, right?

  33. And so, we want to listen to it together.

  34. And so, Miss Angela has been thinking with lots of other friends really hard about how we can

  35. help y'all be a part of that.

  36. And so, we have these new bags for y'all.

  37. Did some of y'all get one of these bags on the way in?

  38. These are worship bags.

  39. If you didn't, we have a whole bucket of them right there on the front.

  40. And you can get one when you go back to your seat, okay?

  41. But there's lots of stuff in here.

  42. It's not stuff to distract you from the preaching.

  43. It's stuff to help you.

  44. Sometimes, is there any adults that it helps your hands to be doing something while you listen?

  45. Or you like to color or draw a picture?

  46. Have your parents ever colored on their bulletin?

  47. Yes.

  48. That's okay, isn't it?

  49. And so, we've got some crafts and some crayons and lots of fun things.

  50. I don't even know what you would do with something like this.

  51. Pastor Will's not very crafty or creative.

  52. But y'all could probably make really cool things with this.

  53. There's also something in here that I want to tell you about.

  54. It's called the Sermon Word Challenge.

  55. You see this little piece of paper?

  56. It has six words on it this week.

  57. It says mercy, moon, Jesus, belonging.

  58. That's a big word.

  59. Exodus and grace.

  60. And you can get this out of your bag.

  61. And while Mr. Will is preaching this morning, you can listen for these words.

  62. And when you hear them, just mark in the circle right there next to it.

  63. Some of them you have to listen really closely because you might only hear them one time.

  64. And you don't want to miss them, okay?

  65. But some of them, your circle might get really full because I might say them a lot of times.

  66. Do I sometimes say some of these words a lot?

  67. Jesus a lot, I know.

  68. I know, that one might get a lot of marks.

  69. I hope it does.

  70. So, this is for you.

  71. And you can take it and maybe even get a treat in your Connect class afterwards.

  72. Wouldn't that be awesome?

  73. So, we do get prizes if we do it right.

  74. You do get a prize.

  75. Yeah, just bring your card up with you and see your small group leader.

  76. Yeah, and then Miss Angela, what do we do with these bags at the end of the service?

  77. Do not take them home.

  78. They don't go home.

  79. If you guys, when you get finished with the service, if you'll put everything back in your bag,

  80. and you can take it and put it right back in the silver bins that are outside,

  81. then we can refill them and then they will be here for you next Sunday.

  82. Does that sound good?

  83. Does that sound good?

  84. I want to tell you all one more thing before you go back and sit down and listen.

  85. We're going to, God's Word is so important and we want you to learn to listen to God's Word

  86. and to understand God's Word.

  87. And so, we have a new slide that we're going to use every Sunday when we're reading the Bible.

  88. And today, our passage is from 1 Peter.

  89. Do you see that?

  90. Do you see that?

  91. The book of 1 Peter, chapter 2, verses 9 and 10.

    1 Peter 2:9

  92. And if you don't have a Bible with you, you can get one out of the pews that are out there.

  93. There are red Bibles in there.

  94. And that's the page to turn to if you don't know where 1 Peter is.

  95. Somebody can help you find it, okay?

  96. And so, when I read it, you'll be able to follow along with us.

  97. And then you can keep it open there if you want to be able to look during the sermon, okay?

  98. It'll help your parents, too.

  99. Some of them may read that on their phone or they may read it out of their Bible or a Bible from the pew.

  100. But we want to be looking at God's Word not just when we're together in the worship service, but all week.

  101. So, we want to be having God's Word in our hands and learning how to read it.

  102. And that's important for you and your parents and for me.

  103. So, can you all do that with me this morning?

  104. All right.

  105. Grab a bag if you don't have one and you can go back to your seats and we're going to listen to God's Word.

  106. Thanks, Pastor Will.

  107. Adults, if you need a bag to help you for the next 30 minutes,

  108. please feel free to come forward.

  109. Nobody will embarrass you.

  110. I might call your name.

  111. That's okay.

  112. I am really excited about this new sermon series,

  113. One Another.

  114. A very creative title, I know,

  115. since we'll be looking at some of the about 60 places in the New Testament

  116. where that phrase is used

  117. to help us learn

  118. what relating to each other

  119. in gospel community

  120. looks like.

  121. You can think of

  122. some of the one another's already, I'm sure.

  123. Love one another.

  124. That's in there a lot.

  125. That's next week.

  126. Confess your sins to one another.

  127. Forgive one another.

  128. Carry one another's burdens.

  129. Spur one another on to love and good deeds.

  130. If we get really excited,

  131. we may even talk about

  132. greet one another with a holy kiss,

  133. which is in there more than once.

  134. We're going to spend this summer

  135. asking the Holy Spirit to teach us

  136. and honestly more than teach us

  137. to shape us

  138. and mold us

  139. and change us

  140. into what God has designed

  141. His church to be.

  142. It is His design.

  143. That's why His Word talks so much

  144. about how we relate

  145. to one another.

  146. The church is to be

  147. this unique community

  148. where the good news

  149. of our Savior

  150. and our connection to Him

  151. binds us to each other

  152. in this unique way.

  153. God answering our loneliness,

  154. the loneliness of this world

  155. with this unique community

  156. and these life-giving relationships

  157. that we all need.

  158. it's going to be encouraging

  159. and it's going to be convicting

  160. because we don't naturally

  161. and normally live these ways.

  162. All of us struggle with it.

  163. But if you want to be

  164. part of a church,

  165. part of a community

  166. that's increasingly learning

  167. to relate to one another

  168. in these ways,

  169. then come on.

  170. Let's be a part of this together.

  171. Pray with me

  172. and dive in with me.

  173. Be a part of this community.

  174. Now having said all of that,

  175. embarrassingly,

  176. I want to start this Sunday

  177. by looking at a passage

  178. that doesn't have

  179. any one another in it at all.

  180. That's terrible, isn't it?

  181. But here's why.

  182. There's something that's so important

  183. that I want us to start here

  184. before we dive into

  185. all of these

  186. one another passages.

  187. When you spend time

  188. focusing on

  189. how we relate to one another,

  190. the temptation there

  191. is to think

  192. that how we relate

  193. to each other

  194. as God's people

  195. is the reason we exist.

  196. It's the goal of life.

  197. It's the essence of our mission.

  198. And it's just not.

  199. God does not design the church

  200. to be a holy huddle,

  201. so to speak,

  202. focused only on one another.

  203. So before we talk about

  204. how we relate to each other,

  205. I want us to listen

  206. to God's Word

  207. remind us

  208. who we are

  209. as His people

  210. and why we are here,

  211. what our mission is.

  212. And then at the end

  213. of this morning,

  214. we're going to reflect briefly

  215. on how one anothering

  216. is a vital part

  217. of that mission.

  218. Not a distraction,

  219. but a vital part of it.

  220. And yes,

  221. one anothering

  222. will be used repeatedly

  223. as a verb

  224. throughout this summer,

  225. so just, you know,

  226. get used to it.

  227. Grab a Bible

  228. of some form,

  229. if you will.

  230. Turn toward the back

  231. to 1 Peter.

  232. We're reading

  233. just two verses

  234. this morning

  235. and then we'll pray together.

  236. Peter's writing

  237. to Jew

  238. and Gentile Christians

  239. scattered throughout

  240. Asia Minor,

  241. modern-day Turkey,

  242. and He reminds them

  243. of their glorious

  244. identity

  245. and mission.

  246. 1 Peter chapter 2

    1 Peter 2 chapter mention

  247. at verse 9.

  248. This is God's Holy Word.

  249. But you

  250. are a chosen race,

  251. a royal priesthood,

  252. a holy nation,

  253. a people

  254. for His own possession,

  255. that you may proclaim

  256. the excellencies

  257. of Him

  258. who called you

  259. out of darkness

  260. into His marvelous light.

  261. Once you were not

  262. a people,

  263. but now you are

  264. God's people.

  265. Once you had not

  266. received mercy,

  267. mercy,

  268. but now you have

  269. received mercy.

  270. Mercy, kids,

  271. you get that?

  272. Mercy?

  273. Yeah, got it.

  274. Let's pray together.

  275. Holy Spirit,

  276. we do need You.

  277. We ask

  278. for Your help.

  279. Challenge our hearts,

  280. convict us,

  281. show us Jesus,

  282. show us the beauty

  283. of relationships

  284. for Your glory.

  285. We ask in Jesus' name.

  286. Amen.

  287. If you walked into a

  288. building on Redstone Arsenal

  289. and you saw a bunch

  290. of these pieces

  291. lying around

  292. on the ground,

  293. you might not

  294. think very much

  295. of them, right?

  296. Some nuts and bolts

  297. and screws

  298. and wires

  299. and sheets of metal,

  300. perhaps,

  301. and they seem like

  302. pretty insignificant.

  303. They really couldn't do

  304. anything very important.

  305. You might just walk

  306. on by.

  307. However,

  308. when they

  309. and some other things

  310. get connected together

  311. in the right ways,

  312. these random bits

  313. of metal

  314. and plastic

  315. and technology

  316. may become

  317. a rocket.

  318. A rocket

  319. that accomplishes

  320. a really great mission

  321. like putting a man

  322. on the moon, right?

  323. That's a picture

  324. of that rocket.

  325. Things that

  326. didn't seem

  327. significant

  328. but are now

  329. put together

  330. and become something

  331. that really accomplishes

  332. something great

  333. and glorious.

  334. It's a picture

  335. of the proverbial reality

  336. that the whole

  337. is greater

  338. than the sum

  339. of its parts.

  340. You've heard that

  341. before,

  342. probably.

  343. Individual things

  344. collected into a group

  345. may become

  346. something entirely

  347. different

  348. and accomplish

  349. a greater mission

  350. than they could

  351. separately.

  352. That's part

  353. of the picture

  354. that Peter

  355. is painting

  356. for us

  357. this morning

  358. in this passage.

  359. He's using

  360. all these

  361. collective nouns,

  362. words that talk

  363. about groups

  364. of people,

  365. a race,

  366. a priesthood,

  367. a nation,

  368. a people

  369. that are brought

  370. together

  371. to become

  372. something new

  373. with a new

  374. and significant

  375. purpose.

  376. He's talking

  377. about Christians

  378. as a group.

  379. There are a lot

  380. of places

  381. in the Bible

  382. that talk about

  383. God's personal

  384. love for individuals.

  385. That's true

  386. and it's important

  387. but this is actually

  388. talking about

  389. God's love

  390. for his people

  391. as a group.

  392. We'll focus

  393. on the collective

  394. mission

  395. this morning

  396. but the mission

  397. is fueled

  398. by the collective

  399. identity.

  400. Who is

  401. this new

  402. people?

  403. Verse 10

  404. says it's

  405. God's

  406. people.

  407. That's really

  408. the bottom

  409. line.

  410. That's what

  411. unites them

  412. into one

  413. group.

  414. Verse 9

  415. has several

  416. things it says

  417. about them.

  418. They're God's

  419. because he

  420. chose them

  421. first.

  422. You are a

  423. chosen

  424. race.

  425. brothers

  426. and sisters

  427. we love

  428. because God

  429. first

  430. loved

  431. us.

  432. That's why

  433. we love him.

  434. Because he

  435. first loved

  436. us.

  437. We're his

  438. because he

  439. made us

  440. and because

  441. he sent

  442. his son

  443. for us.

  444. He picked

  445. you.

  446. Even knowing

  447. all your

  448. failures and

  449. flaws like

  450. Pastor Peter

  451. was talking

  452. about earlier.

  453. He picked

  454. you to be

  455. on his team.

  456. In fact

  457. to be in

  458. his family.

  459. Because of

  460. his gracious

  461. heart.

  462. Isn't that

  463. amazing?

  464. Praise the

  465. Lord, right?

  466. He loves

  467. you like

  468. that.

  469. This passage

  470. in first

  471. Peter mirrors

  472. what God

  473. tells his

  474. people Israel

  475. all the way

  476. back in

  477. Exodus chapter

    Exodus 19 chapter mention

  478. 19.

  479. Before telling

  480. them in the

  481. next chapter

  482. how to live

  483. as his

  484. people in

  485. what we

  486. call the

  487. Ten

  488. Commandments.

  489. God

  490. tells them

  491. what he's

  492. done to

  493. make them

  494. his

  495. people.

  496. Exodus

    Exodus 19 chapter mention

  497. chapter

  498. 19

  499. at

  500. verse

  501. 4.

  502. I think

  503. it's

  504. the

  505. next

  506. slide.

  507. There it

  508. is.

  509. You

  510. yourselves

  511. have seen

  512. what I

  513. did to

  514. the

  515. Egyptians.

  516. How I

  517. bore you

  518. on

  519. eagles

  520. wings and

  521. brought you

  522. to

  523. myself.

  524. Now

  525. therefore

  526. if you'll

  527. indeed

  528. obey my

  529. voice and

  530. keep my

  531. covenant

  532. you shall

  533. be my

  534. treasured

  535. possession

  536. among all

  537. peoples.

  538. This is

  539. what I've

  540. done for

  541. you.

  542. I've

  543. loved you

  544. and I've

  545. come and

  546. I've

  547. brought

  548. you to

  549. myself.

  550. I chose

  551. you.

  552. Not because

  553. you were

  554. great or

  555. amazing or

  556. impressive or

  557. in charge.

  558. You weren't.

  559. But because

  560. I loved

  561. you and

  562. brought you

  563. to myself.

  564. And now

  565. God's

  566. applying this

  567. to Jews

  568. and

  569. Gentiles.

  570. Chosen

  571. race is not

  572. some ethnic

  573. superiority.

  574. That's an

  575. evil twisting

  576. of this.

  577. May it

  578. never be.

  579. He's

  580. saying

  581. you're

  582. a chosen

  583. race

  584. connected

  585. spiritually

  586. because

  587. God has

  588. chosen you

  589. and brought

  590. you together.

  591. We're also

  592. a royal

  593. priesthood.

  594. Friends

  595. of God.

  596. Those who

  597. can come

  598. near into

  599. God's

  600. presence.

  601. That's who

  602. the priests

  603. are.

  604. No one

  605. comes into

  606. the king's

  607. presence on

  608. their own

  609. but a royal

  610. priesthood.

  611. Those that

  612. can walk

  613. into

  614. serve the

  615. king.

  616. And they

  617. even

  618. represent

  619. him to

  620. others.

  621. And represent

  622. others to

  623. him.

  624. Right?

  625. All the way

  626. back in

  627. Exodus 19

  628. again.

  629. All the

  630. earth is

  631. mine,

  632. God says.

  633. And you,

  634. Israel,

  635. shall be to

  636. me a

  637. kingdom

  638. of

  639. priests.

  640. What's

  641. God saying?

  642. I own

  643. the whole

  644. earth.

  645. I want

  646. every nation

  647. to know

  648. me.

  649. And so you,

  650. Israel,

  651. are going to

  652. be priests

  653. the ones

  654. who know

  655. Yahweh,

  656. who have a

  657. relationship

  658. with him

  659. and then

  660. share of

  661. him with

  662. all the

  663. nations around

  664. you so that

  665. the whole

  666. earth knows

  667. who he is.

  668. All of us

  669. then are

  670. priests who

  671. know God,

  672. who have

  673. God dwelling

  674. in us and

  675. therefore bring

  676. his presence

  677. to all around

  678. us.

  679. Especially,

  680. Peter says,

  681. as we're

  682. gathered

  683. together,

  684. offering

  685. spiritual

  686. sacrifices

  687. to God

  688. as priests.

  689. And then

  690. we're a

  691. holy nation.

  692. The exact

  693. same words

  694. used in

  695. Exodus 19.

  696. But what

  697. makes a

  698. people or

  699. a place

  700. holy?

  701. There's

  702. really only

  703. one thing.

  704. God's

  705. presence.

  706. we're set

  707. apart for

  708. him as

  709. a group

  710. different from

  711. others around

  712. you, called

  713. out to be

  714. marked by the

  715. presence of

  716. the living

  717. God.

  718. Do you see

  719. how in all

  720. of these

  721. things Peter's

  722. describing what

  723. makes the

  724. group a

  725. group is

  726. God?

  727. He chooses

  728. us.

  729. He is the

  730. king whom

  731. we represent

  732. as priests.

  733. He is the

  734. one present

  735. with us that

  736. makes us

  737. holy.

  738. What unites

  739. those rocket

  740. parts is the

  741. identity as

  742. a rocket.

  743. Right?

  744. That's what

  745. makes them

  746. rocket parts.

  747. What unites

  748. Christians is

  749. their identity

  750. belonging to

  751. God.

  752. Once, we

  753. were not a

  754. people.

  755. You know

  756. what that

  757. feels like?

  758. not to

  759. belong

  760. anywhere,

  761. not to be a

  762. part of any

  763. group.

  764. Have you

  765. felt that

  766. before?

  767. It's not a

  768. good feeling,

  769. is it?

  770. Alone,

  771. insignificant,

  772. left out,

  773. ignored.

  774. Once you

  775. were not a

  776. people, you

  777. were bits of

  778. metal,

  779. plastic scattered

  780. about, but

  781. now you are

  782. God's

  783. people.

  784. You belong

  785. to your

  786. heavenly

  787. father.

  788. Once you

  789. had not

  790. received mercy,

  791. you were

  792. hopeless,

  793. undeserving,

  794. discarded,

  795. worthless.

  796. But now you

  797. have received

  798. mercy.

  799. Just like God

  800. told his

  801. people through

  802. the prophet

  803. Hosea, that's

  804. what makes you

  805. significant.

  806. That's what makes

  807. you his.

  808. What is it

  809. that makes

  810. God's people

  811. God's people?

  812. He is.

  813. He graciously,

  814. mercifully gives

  815. us an identity

  816. together, calls

  817. us his own,

  818. loves us as

  819. his children.

  820. He sends his

  821. son to make

  822. us his.

  823. Southwood, I

  824. know you know

  825. this.

  826. This is 101, I

  827. get it.

  828. But do you

  829. realize the

  830. significance of

  831. that for us?

  832. Do you

  833. understand what

  834. it means that

  835. our identity

  836. comes from

  837. belonging to

  838. God?

  839. Can you stop

  840. and think of

  841. the implications

  842. of that for

  843. us as a

  844. church?

  845. If who you

  846. are and your

  847. identity comes

  848. from belonging

  849. to God, we're

  850. a people, Peter

  851. says, for his

  852. own possession.

  853. We should be a

  854. possessed people

  855. in the best

  856. possible way.

  857. We are his.

  858. What a privilege.

  859. We're his.

  860. Which means our

  861. purpose is what?

  862. God.

  863. If that's our

  864. identity as

  865. people belonging

  866. to God for his

  867. own possession,

  868. then what's our

  869. purpose?

  870. It's got to be

  871. about him,

  872. doesn't it?

  873. Peter says it

  874. in verse 9.

  875. We're a people

  876. for his own

  877. possession that

  878. you may proclaim

  879. the excellencies

  880. of him.

  881. not yourself.

  882. It's not about

  883. you.

  884. We're to

  885. proclaim his

  886. excellencies.

  887. That's our

  888. new purpose.

  889. Now, maybe

  890. not new in

  891. the sense that

  892. it's what God

  893. originally created

  894. us for, isn't

  895. it?

  896. But we've been

  897. living for

  898. ourselves for a

  899. long time,

  900. haven't we?

  901. I'm pretty

  902. used to it.

  903. But this is

  904. why God calls

  905. people to

  906. himself because

  907. what's best for

  908. them is not

  909. actually living

  910. for themselves.

  911. And he calls

  912. us to himself.

  913. Even with Old

  914. Testament Israel,

  915. this is what God

  916. says to them,

  917. his chosen

  918. people, the

  919. people whom I

  920. formed for

  921. myself that

  922. they might

  923. declare my

  924. praise.

  925. Chosen for

  926. him to

  927. declare his

  928. praise.

  929. God then

  930. sends his

  931. son not

  932. primarily to

  933. make us

  934. happy but

  935. to make us

  936. his.

  937. Let's be very

  938. clear about this

  939. because we get

  940. confused.

  941. Jesus didn't go

  942. to the cross so

  943. you and I could

  944. have a more

  945. comfortable life

  946. with nice

  947. neighbors and

  948. good church

  949. friends.

  950. God's

  951. God's

  952. friends.

  953. Our mission is

  954. not merely to

  955. make each other

  956. feel good and

  957. enjoy life with as

  958. little discomfort and

  959. loneliness as

  960. possible.

  961. Jesus came so

  962. that everyone in

  963. all nations would

  964. know the glory of

  965. the one true and

  966. living God no

  967. matter what it

  968. cost him.

  969. God sent him.

  970. He was a sent

  971. savior for that

  972. purpose and so we

  973. are here so that

  974. everyone in all

  975. nations would know

  976. the glory of the

  977. one true and

  978. living God no

  979. matter what it

  980. costs us including

  981. our comfort and

  982. our nice

  983. neighborhoods and

  984. our good friends.

  985. We are a sent

  986. church as he is a

  987. sent savior.

  988. It's not

  989. complicated because

  990. we are God's.

  991. We are to live for

  992. God's glory.

  993. God's glory.

  994. It's that simple but

  995. it's hard for us

  996. isn't it?

  997. It's hard for us to

  998. live like that.

  999. It's even hard when

  1000. we come to church.

  1001. You think you maybe

1002. spend an hour a week

  1003. you know doing that

  1004. but Jack Miller in

  1005. his classic book

  1006. Outgrowing the

  1007. Ingrown Church, yes

  1008. you should read it,

  1009. says this, many

  1010. church members do

1011. not seem to come to

  1012. church on Sunday

  1013. with strong intent to

  1014. meet with Christ and

  1015. be transformed in

  1016. motivation and values

  1017. by his glory.

  1018. So honesty requires

  1019. us to begin where

  1020. we are to confess

  1021. forthrightly that we

  1022. have sinned and

  1023. fallen short of the

  1024. divine glory.

  1025. Then he says the

  1026. great American church

  1027. tragedy is the local

  1028. church with an

  1029. abundance of resources

  1030. and spiritual gifts

  1031. held back by

  1032. unbelieving apathy and

  1033. blinded by the

  1034. strange notion that

  1035. the work of

  1036. missionary outreach is

1037. the domain of a few

  1038. highly trained

  1039. leaders.

  1040. You don't have to be a

  1041. pastor or a formal

  1042. missionary to have

  1043. your purpose be

  1044. proclaiming the

  1045. excellencies of God.

  1046. We're all priests.

  1047. That's our job.

  1048. Together that's our job

  1049. as a church.

  1050. church.

1051. We need to start by

  1052. saying Father

  1053. forgive us for our

  1054. apathy to your

  1055. glory.

  1056. Being God's means we

  1057. live for his glory

  1058. and we declare his

  1059. grace.

  1060. It's the second part

1061. of verse 9 that we

  1062. would proclaim the

  1063. excellencies of him

1064. who called you out of

  1065. darkness into his

  1066. marvelous light.

  1067. What's the story we

  1068. have to tell and

  1069. share?

  1070. It's God's story of his

  1071. rescuing the undeserving.

  1072. We have experienced

  1073. God's grace that we

  1074. might express God's

  1075. grace.

  1076. That many others as

  1077. undeserving as we are

1078. may hear and see and

  1079. trust that God brings

  1080. them from darkness to

1081. light just as he does

  1082. us.

  1083. We are defined by

  1084. receiving mercy.

  1085. We need his help.

  1086. That's who we are.

1087. We became a people by

  1088. receiving mercy so it

  1089. must be that thy

1090. mercy my God is the

  1091. theme of my song.

1092. The joy of my heart

1093. and the boast of my

  1094. tongue.

  1095. Thy free grace alone

1096. must be what moves my

1097. heart and my tongue to

  1098. proclaim his

  1099. excellencies.

1100. Our purpose is not to

  1101. have God's grace stop

1102. with us and say how

  1103. great and wonderful it

  1104. is.

1105. But to have it flow

  1106. through us to

  1107. others.

1108. We are not here for

  1109. ourselves.

1110. We are not even here

  1111. merely for each other

1112. as important as that is.

1113. We are here also for

1114. those who are not here

  1115. yet.

  1116. Edmund Clowney in his

  1117. book The Church writes

  1118. mission is not an

  1119. optional activity for

  1120. Christ's disciples.

1121. The gospel itself is the

  1122. story of the seeking

  1123. savior who knows the

  1124. father's love.

1125. He goes out looking for

  1126. people right?

1127. We have read about it in

  1128. Luke.

1129. So if mission is lost

  1130. the gospel is lost.

  1131. That's the story.

1132. The story of a sent

  1133. savior.

1134. We must be about what

  1135. Jesus was about.

1136. Having the love of God

1137. that we know that is in

  1138. us overflow to those

  1139. around us.

  1140. You've heard me say

1141. before if that's not our

1142. heart for those around us

  1143. in Huntsville and

  1144. beyond we ought to

  1145. close the doors.

  1146. We should.

  1147. And send the money

  1148. somewhere else.

  1149. To someone who will

  1150. have that be their

  1151. purpose.

  1152. We are God's people

  1153. to follow Jesus in

  1154. declaring his grace in

  1155. word and deed.

  1156. Speaking unbelievable

  1157. hope to the hopeless.

  1158. That's the message of

  1159. the gospel right?

  1160. Showing undeserved

  1161. kindness to the least

  1162. of these.

  1163. That's what we've

  1164. received.

  1165. Undeserved kindness.

  1166. And we're to show

  1167. that.

  1168. So that one

  1169. relationship at a

  1170. time.

  1171. All may see how

  1172. excellent and

  1173. glorious and

  1174. gracious our God

  1175. is.

  1176. God's glory and

  1177. grace here and

  1178. everywhere must be

  1179. the driving passion

1180. of our lives and our

  1181. church.

  1182. God's glory.

  1183. That's great.

  1184. Wonderful.

  1185. Exciting.

  1186. Now I'm frustrated.

  1187. Why, Pastor?

1188. Why are we going to

  1189. waste the next ten

  1190. weeks one anothering?

  1191. Isn't that going to

  1192. distract us from our

  1193. mission?

  1194. Let's get going.

  1195. There's a world out

  1196. there.

  1197. There's a mission to

  1198. accomplish.

1199. And when we focus on

  1200. relationships with one

  1201. another, aren't we going

1202. to lose sight of that

  1203. mission?

  1204. I love that question.

  1205. Thanks for asking.

  1206. The best questions to

  1207. answer.

  1208. The ones you ask

  1209. yourself.

  1210. Let me tell you.

1211. Let's go back to the

  1212. rocket mission to the

  1213. moon for a second.

  1214. Imagine you heard that

  1215. for a few weeks,

  1216. everyone on the launch

1217. team was focused on the

  1218. fins there at the

  1219. bottom of the rocket.

  1220. rocket.

1221. They had to get them

  1222. figured out.

  1223. They turned their

  1224. attention towards that

  1225. because they wanted them

  1226. to be aerodynamic so

  1227. they'd go just right.

1228. They needed to make sure

  1229. that the temperature

  1230. control was there for

1231. when they go through the

  1232. Earth's atmosphere.

1233. I guess some of you all

1234. know way more than I do.

  1235. Don't critique me.

1236. They wanted it to be just

1237. right so it would smooth

  1238. attachment to the rocket

  1239. body, right?

1240. And they had to, if you

1241. heard that was going on,

  1242. would you say they've

  1243. lost focus?

  1244. No, you would say

  1245. that's a vital part of

  1246. the mission.

  1247. I'm so glad that they're

  1248. paying attention to those

  1249. because if they're going

1250. to get to the moon,

1251. those fins are going to

  1252. have to work right.

1253. The same is true for

  1254. gospel community.

  1255. Not on my authority.

  1256. On the authority of

  1257. God's word.

  1258. This same book that

1259. tells us the purpose of

  1260. the people possessed by

1261. God is to proclaim God's

  1262. excellencies says we must

1263. live in humility with one

  1264. another.

1265. We must love one another

  1266. earnestly and so forth.

  1267. There's a lot of them.

1268. It's not either love the

1269. world or love the people

1270. in your church, love one

  1271. another.

  1272. No.

  1273. It's both and.

  1274. Okay, why?

1275. Why is the people vital for

  1276. the purpose?

1277. Why do we need one another

  1278. for God's mission?

1279. Why invest time and energy

  1280. in relationships with

  1281. brothers and sisters that

  1282. aren't easy?

1283. And with people who don't

  1284. have anything in common

  1285. with me except Jesus.

  1286. And it's so frustrating.

  1287. Well, there are many

  1288. reasons we'll see through

  1289. the summer.

1290. But to give us a start,

1291. it's because when you want

  1292. another someone you don't

  1293. have anything in common

  1294. with except Jesus, it

  1295. demonstrates the excellencies

  1296. of Jesus, doesn't it?

1297. That the power of his love

1298. is the only explanation for

  1299. this relationship.

1300. I love the way Dr.

1301. Clowney frames this for us,

  1302. but it's really convicting.

  1303. American evangelicals have a

  1304. tradition, we like

  1305. traditions, of individualism

  1306. individualism that sees the

1307. church as a voluntary club

  1308. for the converted.

1309. And this is his warning.

1310. Until we have a deep

  1311. biblical sense of the

  1312. corporate identity of the

1313. new people of God, we will

1314. not be able to present the

1315. gospel of peace on the front

1316. lines of our culture wars.

1317. The true drawing power of the

  1318. church transcends the

  1319. cultural enclaves of

  1320. contemporary society to

1321. dissolve the hatreds of a

1322. fallen world in the love

  1323. of Christ.

1324. And there's a lot to chew on

  1325. there, but the relationships

1326. we are supposed to share,

  1327. but often don't,

1328. are the ones the world is

  1329. longing for.

1330. Unity and peace among those

  1331. normally divided and in

  1332. conflict.

1333. Let me try to say it in a more

  1334. pedestrian way than the

  1335. beautiful professorial language

  1336. church.

  1337. When a young black

  1338. Republican, a middle-aged

  1339. Hispanic libertarian, and an

  1340. elderly white Democrat

1341. give themselves to a shared

1342. mission and pour their lives

1343. into each other, into actually

1344. caring for and listening to and

  1345. understanding and loving one

1346. another, it testifies to the

1347. excellencies of the king who

  1348. unites them, doesn't it?

1349. It says that there's somebody

  1350. more compellingly worthy than

  1351. anything else that they're

  1352. about.

1353. And it says that their mission

  1354. is more compelling and

  1355. valuable than any other

1356. single political or racial or

  1357. generational issue that they

  1358. care about.

  1359. That there's something else

  1360. that's more important.

  1361. And Jesus is that.

1362. This gospel community that we're

1363. to nurture and develop is what

  1364. we're inviting a lonely and

1365. broken and divided world into.

1366. Ask yourself, who would want to be a

1367. part of any group that's

  1368. consistently hypocritical, holier than

  1369. thou, neglectful, abusive, stubborn,

  1370. and fake.

1371. You want to be in that group?

1372. Often the church, we are guilty of

  1373. all those things.

1374. We must start with our own

1375. repentance and pray for God to

1376. bring revival that would transform

  1377. us.

  1378. We're praying for revival.

1379. We need to pray it starts in our

1380. hearts and then transforms our

  1381. community around us.

  1382. We need one another.

1383. We need one another for

  1384. encouragement and help because

1385. the mission is hard and the

  1386. opposition is real.

  1387. We need one another.

1388. We need one another because God

1389. says it's actually in relationship

1390. with each other that we see the

1391. glory of his love most fully.

1392. We get this view of his love in

1393. all its dimensions as we point each

1394. other to the glory and grace of

  1395. Jesus in our lives.

1396. We must be a people with a

  1397. purpose.

1398. We are focusing on one another this

1399. summer not to lose sight of the

1400. glory of God and the declaration of

1401. his grace but rather to propel us

1402. more effectively and more powerfully on

1403. that mission with a big view of our

  1404. Savior.

  1405. Amen.

  1406. Let's pray.

1407. God we ask for your help.

1408. We confess that we are not the

1409. people that you would have us to be

1410. and yet you love us.

1411. And yet you promise to make us that.

1412. There's hope for us not because we do

1413. this today perfectly but because our

1414. Savior is perfect because he loves us

1415. because he will see this mission

1416. accomplished and what a delight that

1417. he includes us in it.

  1418. Thank you Father.

1419. Give us joy and your mercy to us that

  1420. makes us yours.

1421. Help our hearts delight in being your

1422. people and to live like that day by day.

1423. We ask it in Jesus name.

  1424. Amen.

  1425. Amen.
