  1. You are listening to a message from Southwood Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama.

  2. Our passion is to experience and express grace. Join us.

  3. Thank you guys. I love that song. I love the music of Christmas in general. Yes, I started listening long before Thanksgiving,

  4. which I know for some of you is a violation of everything sacred.

  5. But there is a lot of really, really good Christmas music, really great songs written through the centuries about Jesus' birth,

  6. some of which many of us will get to enjoy together tonight. Looking forward to those songs.

  7. But for the next few Sundays leading up to Christmas, I want to take some of those rich lyrics that we've sung and loved

  8. and I want to contemplate them together. We'll call it Songs of a Savior.

  9. This morning, learning about our Savior and His birth from the words of O Come, O Come, Emmanuel.

  10. Now that said, I'm not preaching song lyrics.

  11. We preach God's word from this pulpit.

  12. And there are no exceptions, including this one.

  13. I'm just letting some of these great Christmas carols lead us to different passages that will feed our souls this Christmas.

  14. This morning, we're going to focus on a prophecy from Jeremiah chapter 30.

    Jeremiah 30 chapter mention

  15. We'll look at some other passages too.

  16. But it's the theme of O Come, O Come, Emmanuel that led me to Jeremiah 30.

  17. One more thing about songs.

  18. One of the reasons we love songs and one of the ways that they help us so much is that they engage our emotions in a unique way, don't they?

  19. Songs do that, whether it's the lyrics themselves, the tunes, the corporate singing of them.

  20. All of it connects with our hearts.

  21. And in our relationship with God, we Presbyterians sometimes struggle with that part.

  22. We sometimes struggle to connect things that we know in our heads with our hearts and our emotions, don't we?

  23. But it's really important.

  24. So I hope that spending some time connecting biblical truth to beloved songs will help all of us to know our Savior and to worship our Savior more with all our hearts and minds and strength.

  25. That's what I want for us this Christmas season.

  26. Let's pray together and then we'll look at God's Word as it speaks into our lives.

  27. Pray with me.

  28. Father, we most of all need to know you.

  29. You've been reminding us of that day after day, week after week as we come and open your Word.

  30. And as the prophets have called us back to a relationship with you and knowing you.

  31. And now that's why you've sent Jesus.

  32. That we would know you up close and personal.

  33. And so, Father, we long for that.

  34. We know that's your heart for us.

  35. And we ask this morning as we open your Word that you would today send your Spirit.

  36. To open our eyes and open our hearts that we might know you and love you more.

  37. Help us, we pray in Jesus' name.

  38. Amen.

  39. Amen.

  40. Imagine just a minute this morning that you're a young person.

  41. When Malachi prophesied to God's people around 460 B.C.

  42. You remember the striking words of the prophet.

  43. Warnings that frightened you.

  44. Promises that inspired you.

  45. And then all of a sudden he was gone.

  46. The hope of a deliverer to come stayed there in your heart.

  47. You read other prophets.

  48. You studied the Torah.

  49. You learned of Yahweh's character.

  50. And you waited.

  51. The rest of your life.

  52. And your children's lives.

  53. And your grandchildren's lives.

  54. And nothing.

  55. No other prophets of Yahweh seemed to be speaking.

  56. Occasionally a strong leader popped up and got everybody's hopes up.

  57. But then he faded.

  58. Entire lifetimes.

  59. Generations.

  60. Centuries.

  61. Past.

  62. In silence.

  63. Imagine trying to hang on to faith.

  64. Imagine trying to pass on faith to the next generation.

  65. You cling to the words of God's promises.

  66. And the stories of God's faithfulness.

  67. And the glory of God's character.

  68. But you're longing to hear from God.

  69. To have God actually show up.

  70. To experience that hope that you've only heard of.

  71. Over 400 years.

  72. That's a long time, isn't it?

  73. A lot of waiting.

  74. I almost put down as the text for this morning.

  75. This blank page between Malachi and Matthew.

  76. You have one of those in your Bibles?

  77. It's one blank page usually.

  78. And the end of the prophets.

  79. Since we've just finished Malachi.

  80. And our study of the minor prophets.

  81. God.

  82. I just.

  83. Display my foolish pride.

  84. For people to respond.

  85. To his call to repent.

  86. And to return to him.

  87. I mean.

  88. Certainly God is active here.

  89. But.

  90. People are longing for more.

  91. For God himself.

  92. To come.

  93. As he's promised so many times.

  94. And here God.

  95. God's going to come.

  96. And it doesn't seem to be.

  97. Happening.

  98. It's a long way.

  99. To live.

  100. The God.

  101. The God.

  102. Gives voice.

  103. To the Christ.

  104. Such a long way.

  105. To live.

  106. Kids.

  107. Do you know what Emmanuel.

  108. Anybody know what that word.

  109. It's a big word.

  110. I'm a desperate man.

  111. The word Emmanuel means.

  112. God is with us.

  113. God is with us.

  114. That's what it.

  115. You've been more patient all this time.

  116. You were me.

  117. I've given up long ago.

  118. He's the only one who can help us.

  119. Come be with me.

  120. Like a bunch of times.

  121. Maybe when you're in the world.

  122. It's a dark.

  123. He's been in the world.

  124. I've given up mommy.

  125. Daddy.

  126. Come help me.

  127. Come help me.

  128. Come help me.

  129. Come help me.

  130. Come help me.

  131. Come help me.

  132. Come help me.

  133. Come help me.

  134. Come help me.

  135. Come help me.

  136. Come help me.

  137. Come help me.

  138. It's a sad way to live.

  139. Such a sad, sad way to live.

  140. Without God showing up.

  141. They face the only cross.

  142. I'm a desperate man.

  143. You're in the shadow.

  144. I'm in desperate need.

  145. I'm here saving him.

  146. The O come.

  147. Come help me.

  148. Come help me.

  149. It's that longing.

  150. Oh, getting desperate for God to come.

  151. Not sure how much longer they can hold on without him showing up.

  152. Some of them certainly gave up.

  153. Come on.

  154. Come on.

  155. It's too much.

  156. It's not worth it.

  157. It's too long.

  158. Maybe we don't have to try to.

  159. but they

  160. It's all I need and go on.

  161. But the pain and the simple truth.

  162. He speaks to the issue of what is it going on.

  163. I'm a desperate man.

  164. I'm in desperate need of your saving end.

  165. Come and rest me.

  166. I'm in desperate need of your saving end.

  167. Come and rest me.

  168. He delivers to God's exiled people.

  169. For thus says the Lord, verse 12,

  170. Your hurt is incurable and your wound is grievous.

  171. There is none to uphold your cause.

  172. No medicine for your wound.

  173. No healing for you.

  174. All your lovers have forgotten you.

  175. They care nothing for you.

  176. For I've dealt you the blow of an enemy.

  177. The punishment of a merciless foe.

  178. Because your guilt is great.

  179. Because your sins are flagrant.

  180. Why do you cry out over your hurt?

  181. Your pain is incurable.

  182. Because your guilt is great.

  183. Because your sins are flagrant.

  184. I have done these things to you.

  185. Give up on yourselves.

  186. On your self-sufficiency, he says.

  187. Your situation really is as bad as you think.

  188. Probably even worse.

  189. Your wound is deep and beyond cure.

  190. Your guilt is unmanageable.

  191. Your sins are obvious and condemning.

  192. And God's people hearing this weeping prophet,

  193. as Jeremiah is known,

  194. they join in with the weeping, right?

  195. Psalm 137.

  196. The exiles weep.

  197. How can we sing the songs of God

  198. in a foreign land?

  199. We might say,

  200. do you seriously want me to sing Christmas carols

  201. in the face of my real life, pastor?

  202. You being serious with me four weeks in a row?

  203. It's hard for me even thinking

  204. of what some of y'all are feeling

  205. because you've shared some of that with me.

  206. Why life is hard.

  207. Why singing like that might be hard.

  208. One of our members

  209. sent me a text a few weeks ago saying,

  210. could you preach sometime

  211. about going through something tragic

  212. with long-term effects?

  213. I'm just not hearing what God says to me here.

  214. Brother, we can relate.

  215. And hopefully you'll hear with me

  216. some of what God says to us

  217. in those situations.

  218. We can relate here, can't we?

  219. Maybe especially during the Christmas season,

  220. we feel it.

  221. We live in a place that is not our home

  222. and God sometimes seems absent

  223. or silent.

  224. I've talked with enough of us to know

  225. we have felt and we do feel this.

  226. Some of us are stuck in dead-end jobs

  227. that don't give us dignity or worth.

  228. No light at the end of the tunnel.

  229. Some of us are struggling to fit in

  230. with friends at school

  231. and it hurts

  232. and it seems to get worse,

  233. not better.

  234. Some of us are battling chronic pain

  235. that we can hardly describe to anyone else.

  236. It's limiting.

  237. It's isolating.

  238. Some of us are aching

  239. with the loss of a loved one,

  240. maybe more acutely this time of year.

  241. Some of us are waging

  242. what feels like a lifelong battle

  243. with sinful desires,

  244. addictions,

  245. with anger.

  246. And these things and many others

  247. make us feel like the exiles that we are, right?

  248. Not fitting in.

  249. Not finding fulfillment here.

  250. Not feeling hopeful.

  251. And realizing that all of these

  252. either directly or often indirectly

  253. result from our sins,

  254. our failures,

  255. our idols.

  256. And Jeremiah begins by saying,

  257. yep,

  258. that's the truth.

  259. If you don't feel any of these

  260. longings or groanings

  261. in yourself,

  262. think beyond yourself

  263. to the hunger,

  264. the genocide,

  265. the trafficking of people

  266. in our own country

  267. and around the world.

  268. I'm not seeing you, God.

  269. This doesn't feel right to me.

  270. How can I just keep going on

  271. with all of this?

  272. Those words of the song

  273. Deliver Us

  274. that we'll hear tonight,

  275. we heard last Sunday,

  276. are haunting, aren't they?

  277. Our sins more numerous

  278. than all the lambs we've slain.

  279. Our shackles made with our own hands.

  280. sins.

  281. We've made our own bed.

  282. But we look at it

  283. and it's disgusting.

  284. It's horrible.

  285. Oh, Yahweh,

  286. break this silence

  287. if you can.

  288. We cry out

  289. and yet the struggle continues

  290. as we are born captive to sin.

  291. As we live in a world

  292. broken and cursed by sin's effects.

  293. As we find our flesh

  294. warring against our spirits

  295. so that we live so often

  296. for ourselves,

  297. the pain persists.

  298. The longing for whom

  299. keeps gnawing.

  300. Yes?

  301. You with me in this?

  302. You're about ready for me

  303. to leave it?

  304. We live here, don't we?

  305. Maybe not every day

  306. you feel it the same way,

  307. but do you feel that ache?

  308. Do you recognize that longing,

  309. that cry in your heart?

  310. God is warning us through Jeremiah

  311. not to take our predicament lightly.

  312. Quit pretending.

  313. I'm fine.

  314. Good.

  315. Yeah, you know, fine.

  316. Yeah.

  317. Yeah, fine.

  318. How can you pray for us?

  319. Ah, I mean,

  320. my aunt's goldfish

  321. lost a fin.

  322. Yeah, but I mean,

  323. that's about it.

  324. We're good.

  325. Really?

  326. Really?

  327. We're good?

  328. Fine.

  329. Good.

  330. Yeah, we trust Jesus.

  331. We know God.

  332. I mean, we go to church,

  333. don't we?

  334. We're good.

  335. Fine.

  336. Fine.

  337. Yep.

  338. Y'all, we are so self-sufficient.

  339. We don't even realize it

  340. sometimes.

  341. We hate receiving help

  342. from anyone.

  343. And God is telling us

  344. this morning

  345. that when we deny

  346. the reality

  347. of our helpless situation,

  348. we miss our true hope

  349. because we are not it.

  350. It's not me.

  351. It's not you.

  352. When we depend on ourselves,

  353. when we insist we are okay,

  354. when we commit to trying harder

  355. to handle it,

  356. we are barricading ourselves

  357. against the one

  358. who can truly help.

  359. When we seek to fight sin

  360. and Satan

  361. without surrendering to God,

  362. without depending

  363. on His strength,

  364. we really are hopeless.

  365. I know you're ready

  366. for me to get to the hope,

  367. but before we do,

  368. Jeremiah has one more warning.

  369. One more thing

  370. we should give up on

  371. beside ourselves.

  372. Look at verse 14.

  373. All your lovers

  374. have forgotten you.

  375. They care nothing for you.

  376. Give up on being

  377. sufficient yourselves

  378. and give up on your idols

  379. that promise to be enough

  380. to fulfill you.

  381. For God's people,

  382. it was sometimes

  383. the nations around them

  384. that looked strong enough

  385. to provide security.

  386. For God's people,

  387. it was sometimes

  388. idols of wood and stone,

  389. other gods

  390. who promised to provide

  391. fertility or rain

  392. or whatever they needed.

  393. For God's people then,

  394. it was sometimes

  395. the people of the other nations

  396. in whom they thought

  397. they would find life

  398. in that relationship.

  399. And God says,

  400. no.

  401. None of those lovers

  402. truly care for you,

  403. can truly help you.

  404. See, when you're in exile,

  405. when you don't feel at home

  406. where you are,

  407. it's so appealing,

  408. isn't it,

  409. to look for that feeling

  410. of home,

  411. comfort,

  412. rest,

  413. belonging,

  414. security,

  415. in someone

  416. or somewhere else

  417. other than God.

  418. after all the chaos

  419. of travel

  420. and football

  421. and arguing

  422. and decorating,

  423. last night,

  424. my family

  425. finally had the moment.

  426. You know,

  427. we turned off

  428. all the lights

  429. and turned on the lights

  430. on the Christmas tree.

  431. We sat on the sofa together

  432. for just that moment

  433. and sang Christmas carols.

  434. All that chaos

  435. for that one moment,

  436. that one magical moment

  437. of peace.

  438. Not a bad idea,

  439. but a bad idol.

  440. Right?

  441. It's good

  442. when it turns

  443. our hearts to God.

  444. Bad

  445. when we find

  446. our hope

  447. in it.

  448. See,

  449. we don't want to admit

  450. we're exiles

  451. here,

  452. do we?

  453. So when we find

  454. ourselves

  455. groaning,

  456. hurting,

  457. longing

  458. for something more,

  459. it's tempting

  460. to think

  461. we will find

  462. relief

  463. in a better

  464. relationship,

  465. in a little more money,

  466. in an escape

  467. to Netflix,

  468. in even

  469. a more moral

  470. or religious lifestyle.

  471. Hope

  472. in social status,

  473. hope in children,

  474. hope in success

  475. or popularity.

  476. prosperity.

  477. It's so tempting

  478. because it offers

  479. a glimmer

  480. of light

  481. in the darkness.

  482. It's so tempting

  483. because so many

  484. of our idols

  485. have an element

  486. of goodness

  487. or truth in them

  488. like that

  489. sparkling Christmas tree

  490. moment.

  491. It's so tempting

  492. because we feel

  493. lost and we long

  494. for a temporary home

  495. even if it's

  496. just for the night,

  497. just for that one moment

  498. to feel at peace

  499. some moment,

  500. however briefly,

  501. where the ache

  502. or the longing

  503. is soothed.

  504. And God says,

  505. no,

  506. those things

  507. cannot actually

  508. deliver

  509. what they promise.

  510. They can't heal

  511. your incurable wound.

  512. They can't deal

  513. with your overwhelming guilt.

  514. They can't provide

  515. you permanent security.

  516. And when we deny

  517. that reality

  518. and go running off

  519. after our glittering

  520. idols of our hearts,

  521. we miss our only hope.

  522. We do this

  523. in so many ways, y'all.

  524. We keep the groaning

  525. and the longing

  526. at arm's length

  527. by living in a nice

  528. enough neighborhood

  529. with nice enough friends,

  530. with nice enough kids

  531. in a nice enough church

  532. because we hate admitting

  533. we're aliens

  534. and strangers here

  535. and for at least

  536. parts of our days

  537. we can feel

  538. that we're at home.

  539. We soothe ourselves

  540. with half-truths.

  541. We settle for quick fixes.

  542. We stop at feeling hope

  543. rather than truly

  544. having hope.

  545. And in so doing,

  546. we miss

  547. our only hope.

  548. When there is only

  549. one real solution,

  550. settling for any other one

  551. keeps you from finding

  552. the real one,

  553. doesn't it?

  554. When you stop

  555. and get satisfied there.

  556. It's like masking

  557. your need for emergency surgery

  558. with enough pain medication

  559. that you don't feel

  560. you need the doctor anymore.

  561. that's dangerous.

  562. The words of this song

  563. are crying out

  564. the right thing.

  565. Oh come,

  566. oh come,

  567. Emmanuel

  568. and ransom

  569. captive Israel

  570. that mourns

  571. in lonely exile here

  572. until the Son of God

  573. appear.

  574. Unless, God,

  575. you show up,

  576. we will be mourning

  577. in exile.

  578. We will be battling sin

  579. and often losing.

  580. We will be grieving

  581. over death.

  582. We will be longing

  583. for the home

  584. that we were made for.

  585. How many of these

  586. real situations

  587. we're facing,

  588. including certainly

  589. the fact that we are

  590. living as exiles

  591. in a world

  592. where we are aliens

  593. and strangers,

  594. will not be cured

  595. by anything short

  596. of Jesus coming again

  597. to take us home

  598. to be with him

  599. forever.

  600. You know that, right?

  601. The Israelites'

  602. one hope

  603. was a Savior

  604. coming to rescue them.

  605. And our one hope

  606. is that same Savior

  607. coming again

  608. to rescue us.

  609. Amen?

  610. That's it.

  611. There aren't other ones.

  612. There are substitutes.

  613. there are sooths

  614. for a moment.

  615. But he's our only hope.

  616. Listen to Jeremiah

  617. gloriously bring

  618. that hope home

  619. to God's people

  620. walking in darkness

  621. like us.

  622. Then fear not,

  623. O Jacob,

  624. my servant,

  625. declares the Lord.

  626. Nor be dismayed,

  627. O Israel,

  628. for behold,

  629. I will save you

  630. from far away

  631. and your offspring

  632. from the land

  633. of their captivity.

  634. Jacob shall return

  635. and have quiet

  636. and ease

  637. and none shall

  638. make him afraid

  639. for I am with you

  640. to save you,

  641. declares the Lord.

  642. God with us

  643. to save us.

  644. That's the Christmas message,

  645. right?

  646. It's the Christmas message

  647. the angel first speaks

  648. to Joseph

  649. in Matthew chapter 1.

    Matthew 1 chapter mention

  650. She will bear a son

  651. and you shall call

  652. his name Jesus

  653. for he will save

  654. his people

  655. from their sins.

  656. And all this took place

  657. to fulfill

  658. what the Lord

  659. had spoken

  660. by the prophet.

  661. Behold,

  662. the virgin shall conceive

  663. and bear a son

  664. and they shall call

  665. his name

  666. Emmanuel,

  667. which means

  668. God with us,

  669. right?

  670. God with us

  671. to save us.

  672. Remember,

  673. God shows up

  674. as a baby

  675. after 400 plus

  676. years of waiting.

  677. None of us

  678. has yet waited

  679. that long

  680. in our lives.

  681. There's no need

  682. for us to deny it.

  683. Often,

  684. God seems absent

  685. or silent.

  686. He seems absent

  687. or silent

  688. in our lives

  689. for any number

  690. of reasons

  691. and we feel that

  692. but Jesus comes

  693. to remind us

  694. even in those moments

  695. it's still not time

  696. to give up

  697. on God,

  698. is it?

  699. Yes,

  700. give up on yourselves.

  701. Yes,

  702. give up on your idols

  703. but no,

  704. in those moments

  705. God's not

  706. actually absent

  707. or silent.

  708. Just wait.

  709. What's about to happen?

  710. He breaks in

  711. with a sky-glowing

  712. herald of angels.

  713. Not simply

  714. sending some

  715. words of hope

  716. to hang on to.

  717. not merely

  718. sending another prophet

  719. to go tell you

  720. how to be

  721. but actually

  722. entering in

  723. himself

  724. breaking in

  725. as Emmanuel

  726. and being

  727. with us

  728. to save us

  729. to save his people

  730. from their sins.

  731. That's what happens

  732. at the end

  733. of all that waiting

  734. because God loves

  735. to bring his light

  736. into the darkest nights

  737. to bring his hope

  738. into the most

  739. hopeless places.

  740. Listen to Jeremiah

  741. one more time.

  742. It's after

  743. recapping

  744. that incurable pain

  745. we read about earlier

  746. the great guilt

  747. and sin

  748. in verse 15

  749. he says

  750. therefore

  751. therefore what?

  752. I mean

  753. you finish it, right?

  754. incurable wounds

  755. and great guilt

  756. and sin

  757. that's overwhelming

  758. therefore what?

  759. You're sent away

  760. in exile forever?

  761. Therefore

  762. I will punish you

  763. with certain death?

  764. What does it say?

  765. No.

  766. Therefore

  767. all who devour you

  768. shall be devoured.

  769. All your foes

  770. every one of them

  771. shall go

  772. into captivity.

  773. Those who plunder you

  774. shall be plundered.

  775. All who prey on you

  776. I will make a prey.

  777. The very opposite

  778. of what we deserve, right?

  779. What the world

  780. is going on?

  781. Verse 17

  782. For I

  783. will restore health

  784. to you

  785. and your wounds

  786. I will heal

  787. declares the Lord

  788. because they have

  789. called you

  790. an outcast.

  791. It is Zion

  792. for whom no one cares.

  793. Did you hear that?

  794. God saves his people

  795. not in spite

  796. of their outcast status

  797. but because

  798. of their outcast status

  799. because he loves

  800. to heal

  801. when the wounds

  802. are incurable.

  803. Because he loves

  804. to rescue

  805. when no one else

  806. is able to

  807. and there's no other hope.

  808. John Calvin says

  809. of this verse

  810. when therefore

  811. the people

  812. should become

  813. so sunk

  814. in misery

  815. as to make

  816. all to think

  817. their deliverance

  818. hopeless

  819. God promises

  820. that he would

  821. then

  822. be

  823. their redeemer.

  824. Is that where

  825. you are today?

  826. Are you honestly

  827. looking at life

  828. and

  829. you're groaning

  830. you're longing

  831. you're crying out

  832. you've thought

  833. how could I not

  834. give up?

  835. It seems to make sense

  836. it's the only

  837. reasonable path forward

  838. God loves

  839. then

  840. to be your redeemer

  841. he loves

  842. now

  843. if that's

  844. where you are

  845. and what

  846. your heart

  847. is feeling

  848. this morning

  849. to be the one

  850. who comes

  851. and enters in

  852. and meets you

  853. right there.

  854. That's what he's like.

  855. Listen

  856. friends

  857. we

  858. like God's people

  859. are exiles

  860. who've been given

  861. God's word

  862. to study

  863. to learn

  864. his character

  865. to trust

  866. his promises

  867. even

  868. and especially

  869. for the moments

  870. of groaning

  871. he gives it

  872. to us again

  873. this morning

  874. for that

  875. because God

  876. is the only one

  877. who can truly

  878. help people

  879. groaning

  880. as deeply

  881. and honestly

  882. and painfully

  883. as we are

  884. he loves

  885. to make us

  886. like Paul

  887. who remained

  888. because of

  889. God's being

  890. with him

  891. in the midst

  892. of real

  893. difficulties

  894. sorrowful

  895. yet always

  896. rejoicing

  897. having nothing

  898. and yet

  899. possessing

  900. everything

  901. 2nd Corinthians

  902. 6

  903. own the pain

  904. give up

  905. on any

  906. other cure

  907. and then

  908. rejoice

  909. rejoice

  910. Emmanuel

  911. shall

  912. come

  913. God

  914. with us

  915. kids

  916. one more

  917. time

  918. want you to

  919. help us

  920. what does

  921. Emmanuel

  922. mean

  923. God

  924. is

  925. with us

  926. don't forget

  927. that

  928. you will

  929. never

  930. be alone

  931. because of

  932. that

  933. thus says

  934. the Lord

  935. behold I

  936. will restore

  937. the fortunes

  938. of the tents

  939. of Jacob

  940. and have

  941. compassion

  942. on his

  943. dwellings

  944. the city

  945. shall be

  946. rebuilt

  947. on its

  948. mound

  949. and the

  950. palace

  951. shall stand

  952. where it

  953. used to

  954. be

  955. out of

  956. them

  957. shall

  958. come

  959. songs

  960. of

  961. thanksgiving

  962. the voices

  963. of those

  964. who celebrate

  965. I will

  966. multiply

  967. them

  968. and they

  969. shall

  970. not

  971. be

  972. few

  973. I'll

  974. make

  975. them

  976. honored

  977. and they

  978. shall

  979. not

  980. be

  981. small

  982. their

  983. children

  984. shall

  985. be

  986. as they

  987. were

  988. of old

  989. their

  990. congregation

  991. shall

  992. be

  993. established

  994. before

  995. me

  996. I'll

  997. punish

  998. all

  999. who

  1000. oppress

  1001. them

  1002. and

  1003. listen

  1004. to this

  1005. listen

  1006. to who's

  1007. in

  1008. charge

  1009. their

  1010. prince

  1011. shall

  1012. be

  1013. one

  1014. of

  1015. themselves

  1016. their

  1017. ruler

  1018. shall

  1019. come

  1020. out

  1021. from

  1022. their

  1023. midst

  1024. we know

  1025. that one

  1026. don't

  1027. we

  1028. that great

  1029. prince

  1030. of God's

  1031. people

  1032. I will

  1033. make him

  1034. draw near

  1035. and he

  1036. shall

  1037. approach

  1038. me

  1039. for who

  1040. would

  1041. dare

  1042. of himself

  1043. to

  1044. approach

  1045. me

  1046. declares

  1047. the

  1048. Lord

  1049. and then

  1050. the best

  1051. part

  1052. of all

  1053. these

  1054. promises

  1055. of all

  1056. of God

  1057. showing up

  1058. in the

  1059. pain

  1060. you

  1061. shall

  1062. be

  1063. my

  1064. people

  1065. and

  1066. I

  1067. will

  1068. be

  1069. your

  1070. God

  1071. for

  1072. us

  1073. looking

  1074. back

  1075. on

  1076. Jesus

  1077. these

  1078. are

  1079. no

  1080. pie

  1081. in

  1082. the

  1083. sky

  1084. promises

  1085. maybe

  1086. God

  1087. will

  1088. show

  1089. up

  1090. God

  1091. has

  1092. actually

  1093. come

  1094. Jesus

  1095. has

  1096. come

  1097. once

  1098. he's

  1099. left

  1100. his

  1101. spirit

  1102. as a

  1103. deposit

  1104. in

  1105. us

  1106. and

  1107. he's

  1108. promised

  1109. to

  1110. come

  1111. again

  1112. for

  1113. us

  1114. so

  1115. this

  1116. song

  1117. and

  1118. this

  1119. passage

  1120. point

  1121. us

  1122. to

  1123. our

  1124. only

  1125. true

  1126. hope

  1127. Emmanuel

  1128. shall

  1129. come

  1130. God

  1131. with

  1132. us

  1133. to

  1134. be

  1135. with

  1136. us

  1137. and

  1138. be

  1139. our

  1140. God

  1141. forever

  1142. let's

  1143. not

  1144. settle

  1145. for

  1146. anything

  1147. less

  1148. let's

  1149. not

  1150. settle

  1151. for

  1152. anything

  1153. less

  1154. than

  1155. Emmanuel

  1156. as

  1157. our

  1158. savior

  1159. God

  1160. as

  1161. our

  1162. hope

  1163. heaven

  1164. as

  1165. our

  1166. home

  1167. let's

  1168. pray

  1169. oh

  1170. holy

  1171. spirit

  1172. help

  1173. our

  1174. hearts

  1175. that

  1176. so

  1177. easily

  1178. and

  1179. quickly

  1180. settle

  1181. for

  1182. substitutes

  1183. for

  1184. false

  1185. hope

  1186. that

  1187. won't

  1188. really

  1189. last

  1190. strengthen

  1191. our

  1192. faith

  1193. even

  1194. as

  1195. we

  1196. look

  1197. back

  1198. even

  1199. as

  1200. we

  1201. see

  1202. you

  1203. fulfill

  1204. your

  1205. promises

  1206. to

  1207. God's

  1208. people

  1209. after

  1210. centuries

  1211. of

  1212. waiting

  1213. that

  1214. we

  1215. will

  1216. find

  1217. you

  1218. to

  1219. be

  1220. faithful

  1221. again

  1222. to

  1223. us

  1224. and

  1225. to

  1226. know

  1227. that

  1228. we

  1229. can

  1230. trust

  1231. you

  1232. God

  1233. we're

  1234. hurting

  1235. some

  1236. of us

  1237. feel it

  1238. personally

  1239. some

  1240. of us

  1241. because

  1242. we're

  1243. in this

  1244. family

  1245. together

  1246. we have

  1247. brothers

  1248. and sisters

  1249. longing

  1250. and groaning

  1251. and crying

  1252. out

  1253. here in

  1254. this

  1255. church

  1256. family

  1257. around

  1258. the

  1259. world

  1260. and

  1261. we

  1262. together

  1263. say

  1264. God

  1265. don't

  1266. let us

  1267. have

  1268. any

  1269. hope

  1270. but

  1271. you

  1272. because

  1273. we

  1274. believe

  1275. you

  1276. have

  1277. come

  1278. and

  1279. you

  1280. will

  1281. come

  1282. again

  1283. why

  1284. we

  1285. cry

  1286. out

  1287. to

  1288. you

  1289. together

  1290. trust

  1291. you
