  1. You are listening to a message from Southwood Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama.

  2. Our passion is to experience and express grace.

  3. Join us.

  4. I have a new joy in getting to preach this passage, having worshiped with y'all.

  5. Thank you.

  6. Sarah, thank you for that encouragement.

  7. I want to add my personal invitation to that two-way conversation tomorrow.

  8. To everyone, this passage says things that are beautiful but challenging to men, women, married, single.

  9. You're all welcome.

  10. But especially to my sisters, whom I love.

  11. I really want to avoid adding to hurt this morning.

  12. And as I've talked with some of you already, I've realized how absolutely capable I am of doing exactly that.

  13. What I don't want to do.

  14. How blind I can be at times to what you're feeling or hearing.

  15. So I want to listen.

  16. That's what tomorrow's about.

  17. And let you listen to one another.

  18. And let us together seek to hear God clearly.

  19. I think especially this week, there is noise in many of our heads and hearts.

  20. And just like any other week, what we most need is to ask God to help us hear His voice clearly.

  21. Because we so need that, don't we?

  22. His voice is the one we need to hear.

  23. So will you pray with me to that end?

  24. God, we just sang that we love your voice.

  25. We do.

  26. You've called us to yourself.

  27. We've heard you call us, your children.

  28. We've heard your voice say, do not fear.

  29. But we have so many voices around us.

  30. The world is screaming, crying out about gender and marriage.

  31. Our own flesh is telling us that we know best and we should listen to that inner voice alone.

  32. Our enemy, the devil, is whispering persistently that you, God, don't really have our best interest at heart.

  33. And that's a lie.

  34. You're good.

  35. So good.

  36. Holy Spirit, speak.

  37. Through the very word of God, that we might hear His voice and follow our good shepherd.

  38. That's our prayer in Jesus' name.

  39. Amen.

  40. Amen.

  41. Let's turn to 1 Peter 3.

  42. I'm going to read first the section addressed to wives.

  43. We'll get to husbands later.

  44. Since we're trying to hear God clearly, let me remind us of something that we may easily forget.

  45. God has been speaking to wives already for two chapters of 1 Peter.

  46. He addresses all of the people in these churches that Peter is writing to.

  47. He's been telling the men and the women, and we all need to hear this reminder,

  48. that our value doesn't come from what we do, how well we perform.

  49. Rather, it comes from who we are.

  50. So when God now begins talking to specific groups of people about being subject to others,

  51. about living such beautiful lives that those who don't yet know God will actually come to follow Him,

  52. He's talking to people that He's already told many gloriously precious things about who they are and their value.

  53. So by way of review, when chapter 3 verse 1 says,

  54. Likewise, wives, let me help you hear God's voice from the first two chapters of this letter alone.

  55. Here's what He's saying.

  56. Wives, beloved daughters of the Lord of the universe,

  57. chosen by God the Father before the world began,

  58. set apart by His Spirit, brought into the family by the precious blood of Jesus,

  59. given specifically for you,

  60. you who have a new life,

  61. a living hope,

  62. an imperishable inheritance,

  63. an inexpressible joy,

  64. in whom God determined to dwell Himself,

  65. giving you unparalleled access near to Him,

  66. because He delighted to make you His very own treasured possession,

  67. the object of His great mercy,

  68. an indispensable part of His eternal family,

  69. with the dignified purpose of manifesting His glory everywhere to everyone.

  70. By the way you live,

  71. the words you say,

  72. your precious faith in Him,

  73. valuable,

  74. blessed,

  75. precious,

  76. dearly beloved,

  77. blood-bought wives,

  78. be subject to your own husbands,

  79. so that even if some do not obey the word,

  80. they may be won without a word by the conduct of their wives.

  81. When they see your respectful and pure conduct,

  82. do not let your adorning be external,

  83. the braiding of hair,

  84. the wearing of gold,

  85. or the putting on of clothing,

  86. but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart,

  87. with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit,

  88. which in God's sight is very precious.

  89. For this is how the holy women who hoped in God used to adorn themselves,

  90. by submitting to their husbands,

  91. as Sarah obeyed Abraham,

  92. calling Him Lord,

  93. and you are hurt children if you do good,

  94. and do not fear anything that is frightening.

  95. After all the things God has said,

  96. to both men and women,

  97. there are now within a marriage,

  98. different directions given to spouses of different genders.

  99. This happens in nearly every case that marriage is addressed in God's word.

  100. Marriage, we see, is another in this series of authority relationships,

  101. a different kind, certainly, from the others in this series.

  102. But husbands and wives are addressed separately with unique roles.

  103. And for wives, that begins with being subject to their own husbands.

  104. Biblical submission,

  105. clearly not reflective in any of these relationships of inherent value,

  106. but rather of a willing choice to defer to someone else's leadership.

  107. In that sense, like two cars of equal value merging onto the parkway,

  108. and it's tough, and you don't know how,

  109. and one decides it's best to give way and slide in behind the other.

  110. This verse helps us see quickly some things not meant by submission,

  111. because it's clearly not absolute, is it?

  112. It's not assuming that the husband is always right,

  113. or closer to God, or more spiritually knowledgeable or capable.

  114. In fact, Peter urges this submission in the context of the evangelism of the husband,

  115. in hopes that a wife's attitude and actions will have a powerful impact on him

  116. in the most significant area of his life,

  117. his relationship with God.

  118. Far from giving up her agency,

  119. she is serving a significant purpose here, right?

  120. See, in the world of Peter's day,

  121. it was assumed that wives would take on and follow the religion of their husbands.

  122. That's just how it worked.

  123. Of course, if Jesus is Lord,

  124. that's not so simple all of a sudden.

  125. Wives would not be able to follow Jesus

  126. and then turn around and follow their husbands after some other God.

  127. Some of you know the struggle of that situation quite well.

  128. You long to share the relationship that is most important to you,

  129. most formative to your life,

  130. with the person you most love and are committed to.

  131. That is a challenging place to be, right?

  132. So Peter gives encouragement and direction

  133. not to bail out of that relationship,

  134. but to remain faithful in your marriage.

  135. Submitting, being subject to it,

  136. it means taking on a posture of respect,

  137. an attitude of honor,

  138. a disposition to trust.

  139. Now, willing submission does include the idea of seeking your own good.

  140. It may require a lot of faith in God's goodness to believe that is so

  141. when he calls you to place yourself under an imperfect husband,

  142. specifically here,

  143. one who doesn't claim to follow Jesus with you.

  144. But like placing yourself under shelter in a storm,

  145. many of us did that this weekend, right?

  146. Sirens in the middle of the night.

  147. It's designed to be a relationship in which you find blessing.

  148. But while the design is for you to benefit too,

  149. submission means your focus is actually on his welfare,

  150. more than your own,

  151. that you would delight in your husband's honor,

  152. that you would seek his thriving in every way,

  153. including spiritually.

  154. And y'all, what a gift that is to any husband, right?

  155. To receive honor beyond what he earns.

  156. Not just one who may come to faith in Jesus

  157. through the way your life preaches the gospel of grace

  158. and seeing the way Jesus impacts you.

  159. Wow, wouldn't that be amazing?

  160. But that gospel continues to impact Christian husbands too, right?

  161. It's not just the evangelism of it.

  162. You might disciple him by the way you love.

  163. Sarah and Abraham, for example, Christian husband.

  164. Helping him see the worth of Jesus, right?

  165. As you sacrifice.

  166. Helping him taste the grace of Jesus

  167. as you honor him beyond what he earns.

  168. We're going to come back to that.

  169. But next in this passage,

  170. Peter points out that this spirit

  171. is where true beauty comes from.

  172. Not just for married women, by the way.

  173. Verse 4,

  174. Let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart

  175. with the imperishable beauty

  176. of a gentle and quiet spirit

  177. which in God's sight is very precious.

  178. Let me try to explain

  179. what this gentle and quiet spirit is

  180. and then talk about how absolutely valuable it is, okay?

  181. Those two things.

  182. The word for gentle

  183. means not self-promoting,

  184. seeking another's honor first, right?

  185. Not a contentious spirit

  186. but rather patient when correcting,

  187. Galatians 6.1.

  188. Not harsh.

  189. It's a word actually that Jesus uses of himself.

  190. In Matthew chapter 11,

    Matthew 11 chapter mention

  191. Jesus says,

  192. I am gentle and lowly in heart.

  193. Far from meaning weak by that,

  194. gentle Jesus does what?

  195. He provides rest for others.

  196. This gentleness is a fruit of his spirit.

  197. Quiet also is a word used as a virtue for all Christians.

  198. 1 Thessalonians 4.11, for example.

  199. A gentle and quiet spirit, y'all,

  200. is not merely ladylike

  201. but truly Christlike.

  202. That's a big deal.

  203. Oh, humble, yes.

  204. Not constantly turning the spotlight on oneself.

  205. But quiet doesn't mean soft-spoken in a whisper all the time

  206. or just a shy personality,

  207. but rather it's talking about the inner spirit,

  208. the heart.

  209. It's a peaceful heart.

  210. A spirit that trusts in God

  211. is not anxiously self-absorbed,

  212. self-obsessed.

  213. Because of that,

  214. I assure you that these women,

  215. Peter's describing,

  216. are strong women

  217. in the best sense of the word.

  218. They're not doormats

  219. or shrinking violets.

  220. Proverbs 31.25 says of the godly wife,

  221. what are her first characteristics?

  222. Strength and dignity are her clothing.

  223. And she laughs at the time to come.

  224. Her gentle strength hopes in God.

  225. And therefore, like Sarah,

  226. can laugh at the days to come.

  227. In other words,

  228. fear nothing that anyone could do to her

  229. because of that hope and trust in God.

  230. This godly woman is quick to listen,

  231. slow to speak,

  232. slow to become angry,

  233. but she can still be passionate

  234. and strong

  235. while gentle and quiet.

  236. See, both of those at the same time.

  237. I dare say,

  238. when, for example,

  239. you raise your voice

  240. to defend the voiceless,

  241. you are reflecting God's image.

  242. You're sharing God's heart.

  243. Just don't be raising your voice

  244. to make much of yourself.

  245. Right?

  246. Inner beauty,

  247. a gentle and quiet spirit.

  248. Now I want you to see how valuable it is.

  249. If someone has told you

  250. that this passage belittles

  251. or demeans women,

  252. I want you especially to listen right now,

  253. okay?

  254. I want you to hear God's word.

  255. This blew me away this week.

  256. There's so many.

  257. I can't even tell you

  258. all the different ways.

  259. What word has Peter used

  260. throughout this letter

  261. when he wants to tell you

  262. how valuable something is?

  263. Can you think about

  264. a word that sticks out over time?

  265. Imperishable, right?

  266. Think of all the

  267. imperishable things he's highlighted.

  268. Our inheritance,

  269. God himself,

  270. our faith,

  271. the blood of Jesus,

  272. more valuable than silver or gold,

  273. the word of God itself,

  274. the gospel.

  275. Now Peter says,

  276. this gentle and quiet spirit

  277. has an imperishable-ness about it.

  278. Its beauty is lasting.

  279. It's eternal.

  280. In fact, in God's sight,

  281. it is very precious.

  282. Are you hearing this?

  283. He treasures

  284. your inner beauty forever.

  285. It's contrasted with the beauty

  286. that we know all too well, right?

  287. This is what we think of

  288. when we hear beauty.

  289. Verse three,

  290. it's the external, right?

  291. The kind you put on

  292. to try to make yourself look good

  293. or impressive

  294. or alluring.

  295. And he says,

  296. it doesn't last.

  297. Proverbs 31 again.

  298. Charm is deceitful.

  299. Beauty is vain.

  300. It's empty.

  301. It's fleeting.

  302. But a woman who fears the Lord

  303. is to be praised.

  304. A woman who fears the Lord, right?

  305. And like Sarah,

  306. fears nothing else.

  307. Even submission in marriage,

  308. not fearing anymore.

  309. That beauty,

  310. fearing the Lord,

  311. never fades.

  312. Which is why it's so valuable.

  313. It's like the godliness

  314. mentioned in 1 Timothy 4, 8.

  315. Where physical training

  316. has some value.

  317. Those things matter.

  318. We're not disconnected

  319. from our bodies.

  320. But spiritual training,

  321. the internal,

  322. holds value

  323. for this life

  324. and the life to come

  325. that lasts forever.

  326. That's why it's so much more valuable.

  327. In God's sight,

  328. that is precious.

  329. Women,

  330. you're a tabernacle

  331. of the most high God.

  332. His spirit dwells in you.

  333. You are precious to him.

  334. Your beauty is not up for debate

  335. by the kids in your class.

  336. It's not.

  337. It's not going to be established

  338. by some guy who comes along

  339. and tries to tell you

  340. that he's the one

  341. that makes you beautiful.

  342. It's not.

  343. He can't be.

  344. It's established

  345. by the God

  346. who made you in his image

  347. and says you're precious

  348. to him.

  349. So much so

  350. that that inner spirit

  351. is exactly the place

  352. he would like to create

  353. as his home

  354. to dwell in you,

  355. a vessel for his majesty.

  356. Can you believe that?

  357. We know what God sees

  358. as beautiful.

  359. Dear sisters,

  360. will you care more

  361. about what God values

  362. or what other people value?

  363. In an image-obsessed world

  364. that is not your home,

  365. will you spend more time

  366. and money

  367. and emotion

  368. on your outward appearance

  369. or your inner character?

  370. For that party coming up,

  371. will it be more important

  372. to prepare your body

  373. to look good

  374. or to prepare your heart

  375. to live godly,

  376. to love others?

  377. There's a place for both.

  378. There's a priority on one.

  379. Men,

  380. before I even read

  381. the husband part,

  382. I want to suggest

  383. there's something

  384. we need to listen to here too.

  385. We are visually sensitive people

  386. by God's good design.

  387. What kind of culture

  388. are we contributing to

  389. as we steward that?

  390. Which values of beauty

  391. are we promoting

  392. for our sisters,

  393. for our daughters?

  394. I'll tell you,

  395. they are already

  396. swimming upstream

  397. to care more

  398. about the inner beauty

  399. when their friends

  400. and the men in their lives

  401. and the magazines

  402. on the stands

  403. care more

  404. about the external,

  405. what they're wearing,

  406. what they look like,

  407. and every time

  408. we gaze at pornography,

  409. every time

  410. we give attention

  411. to the outwardly attractive

  412. over the inwardly beautiful,

  413. every time

  414. we make comments

  415. that belittle

  416. or make fun of someone

  417. based on physical appearance

  418. or performance,

  419. we reject God's value,

  420. God's definition

  421. of beauty.

  422. We sin against Him

  423. and against His image

  424. in the women around us

  425. that we're called to love

  426. and we make these

  427. countercultural priorities

  428. that much harder

  429. for our sisters

  430. for their sake.

  431. Stop.

  432. Repent.

  433. Reorient your values

  434. to God's.

  435. We must.

  436. If we're to love.

  437. Wives,

  438. you are precious

  439. in God's sight,

  440. close to His heart

  441. of imperishable beauty

  442. as you humbly seek

  443. the honor

  444. and flourishing

  445. of your husband

  446. before your own.

  447. Husbands,

  448. perhaps this passage

  449. hasn't wounded

  450. as many of us,

  451. but I'll tell you

  452. it's been really convicting

  453. to me this week.

  454. We too need to remember

  455. that God has said

  456. so much about us

  457. before we perform

  458. or fail to perform

  459. as husbands.

  460. Our value comes

  461. from who we are.

  462. So the same reminder

  463. for us.

  464. Verse 7,

  465. Likewise,

  466. husbands,

  467. husbands,

  468. beloved sons

  469. of the Lord

  470. of the universe,

  471. chosen by God

  472. the Father

  473. before the world began,

  474. set apart

  475. by His Spirit,

  476. brought into the family

  477. by the precious blood

  478. of Jesus

  479. given specifically

  480. for you,

  481. you who have

  482. a new life,

  483. a living hope,

  484. an imperishable inheritance,

  485. and inexpressible joy

  486. in whom God

  487. determined

  488. to dwell

  489. Himself,

  490. giving you

  491. unparalleled access

  492. near to Him

  493. because He delighted

  494. to make you

  495. His very own

  496. treasured possession,

  497. the object

  498. of His great mercy,

  499. an indispensable part

  500. of His eternal family

  501. with the dignified purpose

  502. of manifesting

  503. His glory

  504. everywhere

  505. to everyone

  506. by the way you live,

  507. the words you say,

  508. the precious beauty

  509. of your faith

  510. in Him,

  511. valuable,

  512. blessed,

  513. precious,

  514. dearly beloved,

  515. blood-bought husbands,

  516. live with your wives

  517. in an understanding way,

  518. showing honor

  519. to the woman

  520. as the weaker vessel

  521. since they are heirs

  522. with you

  523. of the grace of life

  524. so that your prayers

  525. may not be hindered.

  526. husbands,

  527. as those called

  528. to love

  529. our wives,

  530. in fact,

  531. to love

  532. as Christ

  533. loved the church

  534. with a towel

  535. wrapped around

  536. our waist,

  537. all the way

  538. to death

  539. if need be

  540. to see them

  541. flourish,

  542. live with them

  543. in an understanding

  544. way,

  545. seek to know

  546. what she loves

  547. what hurts,

  548. what helps,

  549. what makes

  550. her tick.

  551. I realized

  552. this summer

  553. as I got time

  554. on sabbatical

  555. to reflect on

  556. my marriage

  557. that I'd been

  558. neglecting

  559. to pursue

  560. getting to know

  561. Christy

  562. more deeply,

  563. something that

  564. 17 years in

  565. you can

  566. sometimes take

  567. for granted

  568. and get lazy.

  569. you.

  570. Sometimes it

  571. was simple

  572. self-love

  573. that cared

  574. more about

  575. understanding

  576. my own

  577. perspectives

  578. and preferences

  579. more than

  580. hers.

  581. Sometimes it

  582. came from

  583. avoiding

  584. potentially hard

  585. conversations

  586. because my

  587. ideal home

  588. and evening

  589. is conflict

  590. free

  591. and very

  592. peaceful.

  593. and at

  594. that altar

  595. I was

  596. missing

  597. the chance

  598. to understand

  599. her better

  600. for the sake

  601. of my

  602. comfort.

  603. I'm trying

  604. to make

  605. time

  606. to ask

  607. more questions

  608. to

  609. listen

  610. more.

  611. Our job

  612. is to

  613. understand

  614. our wives

  615. not make

  616. sure

  617. they

  618. understand

  619. what we

  620. think

  621. and want.

  622. Then we're

  623. told to

  624. show honor

  625. to them

  626. as the

  627. weaker

  628. vessel.

  629. I know

  630. that is a

  631. sensitive

  632. phrase.

  633. The words

  634. are simply

  635. referring

  636. to the

  637. physical

  638. differences

  639. between

  640. genders

  641. typically

  642. there

  643. by God's

  644. design.

  645. The words

  646. mean nothing

  647. further.

  648. If perhaps

  649. you could

  650. be physically

  651. overpowering,

  652. controlling,

  653. or abusing,

  654. instead

  655. treasure

  656. your wife.

  657. Value

  658. her as

  659. precious.

  660. Seek

  661. her

  662. flourishing

  663. in every

  664. way.

  665. Since

  666. she is

  667. called

  668. to be

  669. subject

  670. to

  671. a

  672. function

  673. that

  674. may

  675. appear

  676. weaker

  677. to

  678. some

  679. or

  680. that

  681. others

  682. will

  683. deem

  684. less

  685. valuable,

  686. so

  687. you

  688. all

  689. the

  690. more

  691. as

  692. you

  693. lead

  694. and

  695. love

  696. show

  697. honor

  698. to

  699. clarify

  700. any

  701. confusion

  702. that

  703. might

  704. come

  705. up

  706. about

  707. value.

  708. See,

  709. honor is

  710. even

  711. beyond

  712. respect.

  713. You

  714. have been

  715. blessed

  716. to live

  717. with,

  718. to lead,

  719. even

  720. to love

  721. one who

  722. is so

  723. precious

  724. to God

  725. that he

  726. gave his

  727. life for

  728. her.

  729. And he

  730. now dwells

  731. in her.

  732. You

  733. remember

  734. also she's

  735. a tabernacle

  736. of God.

  737. So far

  738. from abusing

  739. or lording

  740. strength

  741. over her,

  742. honor her,

  743. learn her

  744. wonderful

  745. strengths,

  746. bear patiently

  747. with her

  748. imperfections

  749. and struggles.

  750. Maybe

  751. confess with

  752. me that

  753. you are

  754. way too

  755. focused on

  756. making sure

  757. you get

  758. honor and

  759. respect and

  760. you look

  761. good.

  762. Guys,

  763. you want

  764. something to

  765. do?

  766. We like

  767. something to

  768. do,

  769. don't we?

  770. This

  771. afternoon,

  772. I'll make

  773. it easy.

  774. Learn one

  775. thing about

  776. your wife

  777. and lift

  778. her up

  779. in one

  780. way.

  781. After

  782. all,

  783. she is

  784. physically

  785. weaker

  786. perhaps,

  787. but she's

  788. spiritually

  789. your equal

  790. before your

  791. heavenly

  792. father.

  793. You are

  794. joint

  795. heirs

  796. in a

  797. culture,

  798. y'all,

  799. don't forget,

  800. that was

  801. not a

  802. thing.

  803. There

  804. were no

  805. such

  806. thing as

  807. joint

  808. heirs,

  809. brother and

  810. sister.

  811. No,

  812. no.

  813. But here,

  814. the women,

  815. your wife,

  816. receives like

  817. you the

  818. gift of

  819. life that

  820. none of us

  821. could ever

  822. earn.

  823. Honor her

  824. not because

  825. she's done

  826. something to

  827. earn it,

  828. but because

  829. she is an

  830. heir of

  831. the king

  832. because he

  833. has honored

  834. her.

  835. honor her

  836. so that

  837. your prayers

  838. may not

  839. be hindered.

  840. Of course,

  841. you knew that

  842. was an

  843. obvious

  844. connection.

  845. We all

  846. saw that

  847. one coming.

  848. Best I

  849. can tell,

  850. this is

  851. telling us

  852. that husband

  853. and wife

  854. have a

  855. shared

  856. spiritual

  857. life.

  858. And while

  859. they are

  860. spiritually

  861. equal,

  862. the husband

  863. has a

  864. specific

  865. responsibility

  866. toward their

  867. spiritual

  868. health,

  869. if he's

  870. not treating

  871. her as the

  872. treasured

  873. heir of

  874. grace that

  875. she is,

  876. he's out

  877. of whack

  878. in relationship

  879. with God

  880. somewhere.

  881. His prayers

  882. for her

  883. probably

  884. implied his

  885. prayers

  886. with her

  887. will be a

  888. struggle.

  889. Husbands,

  890. pray for

  891. and if at

  892. all possible

  893. with your

  894. wives.

  895. When you

  896. honor her

  897. as precious

  898. as God

  899. does,

  900. you will

  901. be driven

  902. to your

  903. knees for

  904. her good.

  905. Right?

  906. When you

  907. think of how

  908. precious she

  909. is and how

  910. God has put

  911. her hand

  912. in yours

  913. to love

  914. and to

  915. lead to

  916. him over

  917. and over,

  918. you'll be

  919. praying because

  920. you're not

  921. enough for

  922. that.

  923. Did you

  924. notice in

  925. this passage

  926. that mutual

  927. honor beyond

  928. earning?

  929. Husband and

  930. wife have

  931. different

  932. functions,

  933. different

  934. instructions

  935. here, no

  936. question.

  937. But they

  938. both are

  939. commanded to

  940. seek the

  941. honor of

  942. the other

  943. before their

  944. own, to

  945. be more

  946. delighted in

  947. the honor of

  948. the other

  949. than their

  950. own.

  951. Marriage is

  952. to be, if

  953. you will, a

  954. race downward

  955. to see who

  956. can be below

  957. and lift the

  958. other one up

  959. the most.

  960. And husbands,

  961. it's your

  962. responsibility to

  963. say, ready,

  964. set, go, and

  965. make sure that

  966. race starts.

  967. And you're both

  968. running it.

  969. It's so

  970. beautiful when

  971. this happens in

  972. a marriage.

  973. I watched a

  974. beautiful picture

  975. of it for

  976. several years

  977. when we first

  978. moved to

  979. Huntsville.

  980. In our very

  981. first small

  982. group here at

  983. Southwood, we

  984. met John and

  985. Betty Bates.

  986. If you didn't

  987. get the chance

  988. to meet John

  989. and Betty,

  990. they're both

  991. with Jesus

  992. now, but

  993. they used to

  994. sit right back

  995. there on that

  996. center aisle

  997. every Sunday.

  998. The last few

  999. years of their

  1000. nearly 65 years

  1001. of marriage

  1002. together, John

  1003. began to suffer

  1004. from dementia

  1005. increasingly.

  1006. He was always

  1007. such a kind

  1008. and thoughtful

  1009. man, but he

  1010. began being

  1011. confused, feeling

  1012. out of place,

  1013. coming still to

  1014. the small group

  1015. meeting where

  1016. he loved to

  1017. participate and

  1018. talking just as

  1019. much, just

  1020. usually completely

  1021. off topic.

  1022. And Betty had

  1023. plenty of

  1024. opportunities sitting

  1025. next to him

  1026. to belittle him,

  1027. to mock him,

  1028. to save face for

  1029. herself perhaps.

  1030. And she would

  1031. smile up at him

  1032. and listen

  1033. patiently,

  1034. occasionally add a

  1035. word of clarification

  1036. without exposing him

  1037. as confused.

  1038. Every day she

  1039. woke him,

  1040. bathed him,

  1041. dressed him,

  1042. held his hand

  1043. while he slept

  1044. so that he would

  1045. both feel secure

  1046. and still feel

  1047. that she needed

  1048. him.

  1049. And then she'd

  1050. show up in public

  1051. and honor him

  1052. when she'd

  1053. earned way

  1054. more honor.

  1055. So beautiful.

  1056. She gave us

  1057. all a picture

  1058. of Jesus'

  1059. love with a

  1060. strong,

  1061. passionate,

  1062. gentle,

  1063. quiet

  1064. spirit.

  1065. Isn't honor

  1066. beyond earning

  1067. after all

  1068. the way

  1069. Jesus

  1070. works?

  1071. Isn't that

  1072. the good news

  1073. of the gospel

  1074. of Jesus?

  1075. Isn't that

  1076. the way

  1077. he loves

  1078. us?

  1079. Jesus

  1080. submits himself

  1081. to his

  1082. father's

  1083. will.

  1084. Jesus

  1085. humbles himself

  1086. from heaven.

  1087. Jesus

  1088. becomes

  1089. obedient

  1090. to the point

  1091. of death

  1092. because he

  1093. delighted to

  1094. see us

  1095. honored,

  1096. to see us

  1097. spiritually

  1098. thriving,

  1099. to see us

  1100. valued and

  1101. treasured

  1102. more than

  1103. himself

  1104. and way

  1105. more than

  1106. we'd

  1107. earned.

  1108. Amen?

  1109. Jesus

  1110. was engaged

  1111. to an

  1112. unfaithful

  1113. bride.

  1114. She

  1115. earned

  1116. his

  1117. disdain,

  1118. his

  1119. rejection

  1120. over

  1121. and over.

  1122. That is

  1123. the story

  1124. of Scripture

  1125. from beginning

  1126. all the way

  1127. through God's

  1128. people.

  1129. and yet

  1130. he chose

  1131. to pursue

  1132. us persistently

  1133. and patiently,

  1134. didn't he?

  1135. He chose

  1136. to wash

  1137. us

  1138. clean.

  1139. He chose

  1140. to hold

  1141. us in

  1142. his hand

  1143. so that we

  1144. would be

  1145. secure

  1146. forever.

  1147. That's the

  1148. kind of love,

  1149. love that is

  1150. patient

  1151. and kind,

  1152. that does

  1153. not insist

  1154. on its own

  1155. way,

  1156. that never

  1157. fails,

  1158. the kind

  1159. of love

  1160. that honors

  1161. the beloved

  1162. way beyond

  1163. earning,

  1164. that we,

  1165. his precious

  1166. bride,

  1167. men and

  1168. women,

  1169. have the

  1170. privilege of

  1171. receiving from

  1172. him and

  1173. then have the

  1174. high honor

  1175. of sharing

  1176. with one

  1177. another in

  1178. lots of ways

  1179. and especially

  1180. in our

  1181. marriages.

  1182. Jesus,

  1183. may all

  1184. of us

  1185. believe how

  1186. preciously

  1187. valuable

  1188. you are

  1189. to him.

  1190. May God

  1191. give all

  1192. of us

  1193. grace to

  1194. know how

  1195. wide

  1196. and how

  1197. long

  1198. and how

  1199. high

  1200. and how

  1201. deep

  1202. is the

  1203. love of

  1204. Jesus

  1205. for you

  1206. and then

  1207. to love

  1208. as he

  1209. first

  1210. loved us.

  1211. Let's pray.

  1212. Jesus,

  1213. to know

  1214. your love

  1215. is something

  1216. that fills

  1217. us with

  1218. that

  1219. inexpressible

  1220. and

  1221. glorious

  1222. joy.

  1223. you love

  1224. us right

  1225. now and

  1226. we didn't

  1227. earn it.

  1228. You've

  1229. loved us

  1230. at our

  1231. lowest

  1232. and our

  1233. worst.

  1234. Jesus,

  1235. you faithfully

  1236. pursued

  1237. us,

  1238. served

  1239. us,

  1240. sacrificed

  1241. for us.

  1242. Would

  1243. you give

  1244. us

  1245. delight

  1246. in the

  1247. privilege

  1248. you've

  1249. given us

  1250. to pass

  1251. that love

  1252. along?

  1253. Might we

  1254. rest in

  1255. your love?

  1256. Might we

  1257. rejoice

  1258. in sharing

  1259. it

  1260. today

  1261. with our

  1262. friends,

  1263. with our

  1264. neighbors,

  1265. and especially

  1266. for those

  1267. of us

  1268. that you've

  1269. called into

  1270. marriages?

  1271. Might we

  1272. give

  1273. all around

  1274. us a

  1275. picture

  1276. of love

  1277. that honors

  1278. another

  1279. way beyond

  1280. what has

  1281. been earned?

  1282. we need

  1283. your help.

  1284. Holy Spirit,

  1285. give us

  1286. your grace

  1287. to that

  1288. end.

  1289. In Jesus'

  1290. name,

  1291. amen.

  1292. Amen.
