  1. You are listening to a message from Southwood Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama.

  2. Our passion is to experience and express grace. Join us.

  3. Good morning, everybody. If I haven't had the chance to meet you, my name is Derek Harris.

  4. I'm one of the pastors here, and I'm just going to go ahead and throw down that I am reeling from the events this past week.

  5. So you can pray for me.

  6. Thank you.

  7. Sorry.

  8. There's two guys sitting in the back there who are in my youth group in Nashville.

  9. I know you're hurting.

  10. I love you.

  11. That's why we do what we do.

  12. That's why we preach the Word of God.

  13. Our world is changing.

  14. Our world is changing.

  15. And America has often been thought of as a Christian country.

  16. And it's changing.

  17. It's changing drastically.

  18. Okay?

  19. This is not an alarmist thing.

  20. This is a realistic thing that's been happening gradually, not just this past week.

  21. I want us to consider this slide here.

  22. Let's see if this is working.

  23. Oh, let me get back.

  24. I'm going to talk about four things this morning.

  25. We're going to talk about the world.

  26. We're going to talk about the Word.

  27. We're going to talk about why it matters.

  28. And we're going to talk about what now.

  29. But first, with the world, it's changing.

  30. Okay?

  31. It's changing a lot.

  32. And it may be changing rapidly for you.

  33. I want you to consider this quote here from Pew Research just in 2022.

  34. Only a few decades ago, a Christian identity was so common among Americans that it could almost be taken for granted.

  35. And as recently as the early 1990s, about 90% of U.S. adults identified as Christians.

  36. But today, about two-thirds of adults are Christians, identifying as Christians.

  37. And the change in America's religious composition is largely the result of large numbers of adults switching out of the religion in which they were raised to become religiously unaffiliated.

  38. Many times they're known as the nones, N-O-N-E-S.

  39. Okay?

  40. Because that's what the box that they would check on a survey or a test or something like that.

  41. Because they have no affiliation with faith, none, when it comes to the faith.

  42. And not only is religious affiliation changing, so is the treatment of those who claim to be Christians, especially in America.

  43. Especially in the deep south, the Bible Belt, where you have been protected for so very long.

  44. It could be due to the past failures of leaders in the church.

  45. Workers of the church.

  46. Members of churches who may have hurt people.

  47. Missions, organizations.

  48. In regards to claims.

  49. Rightful claims.

  50. Of abuse.

  51. Racism.

  52. Discrimination.

  53. Etc.

  54. Right?

  55. Church.

  56. Quote-unquote church.

  57. Institution church.

  58. Has done a lot of damage to a lot of people.

  59. And there's a lot of anger.

  60. And there's a lot of disappointment in our society towards these religious institutions.

  61. Not just the Christian church.

  62. And so you may not affiliate yourself with church leaders who've been caught up in some sort of public controversy.

  63. Or an organization as such.

  64. But there's a good chance that those people who aren't in church.

  65. Who you really wish were here.

  66. There's a good chance that they actually do affiliate those people with you.

  67. Okay?

  68. And us.

  69. And when you enter into any conversation.

  70. You may find yourself needing to take punches.

  71. And we're going to sense that more and more and more as Christians.

  72. Okay?

  73. I will walk up to some conversations.

  74. And if they just hear that I'm a pastor.

  75. Conversation's over.

  76. Or it's instant anger.

  77. My wife was in a conversation with someone recently.

  78. And they were giving her the dagger eyes just because they knew that I was a pastor.

  79. And sometimes it's the opposite.

  80. Sometimes it's actually, oh, breath of fresh air.

  81. Please, can I ask you this?

  82. Can I ask you this?

  83. But you may feel some of that too.

  84. As followers of Christ in the West, we don't live in a Christian country anymore.

  85. We live in a post-Christian country.

  86. This is what I mean by that.

  87. The fundamental, this is a quote again.

  88. The fundamental societal institutions, family, school, church, that took their meaning and place from a basic Christian worldview shaped by Protestantism,

  89. are going through a rewriting of their status, which undermines their traditional outlook.

  90. Christians need to learn or relearn how to be creative and faithful minorities.

  91. The transition may be painful and difficult, but nostalgic attitudes toward a status quo, somewhat marked by Christianity, will not serve the cause of the gospel.

  92. I thought that was an interesting quote there.

  93. So what he's getting at is this, that we as Christians now moving into the, living in this post-Christian era and moving forward,

  94. we might need to unlearn some of our old habits to be able to share the love of Jesus with the world that we so desperately want to have in the church.

  95. And that's going to be a challenge for us, okay?

  96. It's not far-fetched.

  97. We're kind of at a crossroads right now.

  98. It's not far-fetched to believe that in our generation and kids and the generations that you grow up in,

  99. that if you follow the basic tenets of Christianity,

  100. you're going to be seen more and more as unloving, not loving.

  101. You're going to be seen as a renegade.

  102. You're going to be seen as extremist.

  103. And I just want to prepare you for that because we have to be ready.

  104. We have to be ready to love, okay?

  105. And it's not something to be alarmed about, but it is something that we have to be aware of.

  106. And this is why.

  107. Because the world is really, really confused about the church, okay?

  108. Most of the cars that drive by here that never set foot in here think what we do is really, really weird, okay?

  109. I recently was watching a documentary of the band U2,

  110. and they've rewritten the words to Sunday, Bloody Sunday,

  111. to reflect more where the heart of what they've learned over the years is.

  112. And this is what they said.

  113. Here at the murder scene, the virus of fiction, reality TV,

  114. Why so many mothers cry?

  115. Religion is the enemy of the Holy Spirit guide, and the battle just begun.

  116. Where's the victory Jesus won?

  117. You ever asked that question?

  118. That resonated with me.

  119. He was coming from a heart of the love of Christ and wanting to share it,

  120. but just creating that tension in those lyrics.

  121. The world's confused about the church, and the world is longing for the love of Jesus.

  122. And the culture is looking for an alternative to itself, not an echo of itself.

  123. So how are we as Christians supposed to behave and live within a world that doesn't understand us

  124. and is potentially hostile towards us?

  125. Well, remember, though, it may appear more challenging to follow Jesus right now

  126. than it has in the years before in your life,

  127. it was also very difficult for those who followed Christ in the first century.

  128. And they left us some really, really good notes.

  129. The Word of God.

  130. So let's read that today.

  131. The Word.

  132. I'm going to open it up and read it from my Bible,

  133. because I just like reading it from my Bible.

  134. Finally, all of you have unity of mind, sympathy, brotherly love,

  135. a tender heart, and a humble mind.

  136. Do not repay evil for evil or reviling for reviling,

  137. but on the contrary, bless.

  138. For to this you were called, that you may obtain a blessing.

  139. For whoever desires to love life and see good days,

  140. let him keep his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking deceit.

  141. Let him turn away from evil and do good.

  142. Let him seek peace and pursue it.

  143. For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous,

  144. and his ears are open to their prayer.

  145. But the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.

  146. This is the Word of the Lord.

  147. Thanks be to God.

  148. The grass withers and the flower fades,

  149. but the Word of our God will stand forever.

  150. And it is what we need.

  151. It's what we need to learn,

  152. and it gives us the direction that we need.

  153. It's not changed.

  154. God's love hasn't changed.

  155. So a little bit about this.

  156. Are you all familiar with the TV show Friday Night Lights?

  157. It's an older show.

  158. So Coach Taylor, one of the great TV characters,

  159. he had this phrase that he would say,

  160. clear eyes, full heart, can't lose.

  161. Although I think he said full hearts.

  162. I think there was an S on it, but you know.

  163. Clear eyes, full hearts, can't lose.

  164. Well, this text that we just read,

  165. think of Coach Peter, okay?

  166. He's getting in our faces.

  167. He's helping us see how we're supposed to be playing this game to win.

  168. Now, let's start there with verse 8.

  169. He says,

  170. Finally, all of you,

  171. finally, all of you,

  172. have unity of mind, sympathy,

  173. brotherly love, a tender heart,

  174. and a humble mind.

  175. Now, notice he doesn't start by looking outside the huddle.

  176. Right?

  177. Imagine him standing there, Coach Peter.

  178. He says, he's talking to the team,

  179. and he says,

  180. Finally, all of you, right?

  181. Which means that he doesn't mean some of you.

  182. Okay?

  183. What does all of you mean?

  184. Anybody?

  185. What does all of you mean?

  186. Everybody.

  187. Okay?

  188. Every single one of us.

  189. And the idea here is that

  190. what he says after that

  191. is how Christ calls

  192. every single one of us

  193. who proclaim faith in Christ

  194. to live

  195. within the church,

  196. within the team,

  197. and also

  198. everywhere

  199. all the time.

  200. How many of you

  201. love the smell of coffee in the morning?

  202. Right?

  203. Some of you,

  204. I know there's some big coffee heads.

  205. If it's not coffee,

  206. maybe it's bacon.

  207. Okay?

  208. If it's not bacon,

  209. maybe it's barbecue.

  210. If it's not barbecue,

  211. fill in the blank.

  212. Maybe it's candy.

  213. I don't know.

  214. Sugar being made.

  215. And cookies.

  216. Something like that.

  217. Right?

  218. And when you smell that smell,

  219. you ever woken up in the morning

  220. and you had that smell

  221. and you just feel like

  222. one of those cartoon characters

  223. that wants to float down

  224. to where the smell is coming from,

  225. it changes the environment.

  226. And when we live the way

  227. that Peter describes,

  228. we're not going to echo the culture.

  229. We're going to offer it

  230. the very thing that it needs.

  231. The aroma of God's grace.

  232. But that happens

  233. through Christ-centered community

  234. and relationships

  235. built on the foundation

  236. of the Word of God

  237. and Christ is the chief cornerstone.

  238. But grace is that aroma.

  239. I was talking with somebody

  240. about that this morning.

  241. Grace is the aroma.

  242. And what does Coach Peter say?

  243. He says,

  244. unity of mind,

  245. sympathy,

  246. brotherly love,

  247. tender heart,

  248. humble minds can't lose.

  249. Okay?

  250. Think about this for a second.

  251. Unity of mind.

  252. Let's look at those phrases

  253. for a second.

  254. Unity of mind means

  255. literally live in harmony.

  256. Literally though,

  257. be of the same mind.

  258. Okay?

  259. That can only happen

  260. when we share the mind of Christ.

  261. Where do you find the mind of Christ?

  262. The Scriptures.

  263. This is offered to us

  264. every day

  265. through the Scriptures.

  266. Right?

  267. And through the fellowship

  268. of the Holy Spirit.

  269. God in you.

  270. Christ living in us

  271. in this inseparable union

  272. that happens through faith.

  273. So the unity of mind

  274. comes from the unity

  275. of the mind of Christ

  276. within us

  277. that we apply towards one another.

  278. And what does the sympathy mean?

  279. So when we live in harmony

  280. and we're of the same mind,

  281. then we can enter

  282. into the feelings of others.

  283. Right?

  284. Sympathetic comes from a Greek word

  285. which means feeling with.

  286. And it's probably better signified

  287. by our English word empathy.

  288. Okay?

  289. And when we can enter

  290. into the feelings of others,

  291. then we're more properly positioned

  292. to share God's love with them.

  293. And that becomes that aroma of grace.

  294. So it breaks down

  295. the doors of hostility first.

  296. And my guess is that

  297. if you've ever been in a situation

  298. where you felt like heard

  299. and really understood

  300. that whatever anger

  301. you brought to that situation

  302. probably went down a little bit.

  303. Went down a couple levels.

  304. Well, Peter's playing off

  305. his discussion

  306. that Will got to preach

  307. last week and not me

  308. about husbands and wives

  309. in those previous verses.

  310. And so here's the idea.

  311. Having the unity of mind,

  312. having the sympathy,

  313. having this aroma of grace,

  314. it takes time

  315. and it takes hard work.

  316. And it's very hard

  317. to understand one another

  318. even on the good days, right?

  319. How much harder on the bad?

  320. But all things are possible

  321. through Jesus Christ

  322. who gives us strength.

  323. And it starts

  324. by listening to each other.

  325. Listening to hear

  326. as we've been challenging

  327. one another here recently.

  328. The church, God's people,

  329. the living stones,

  330. which we talked about

  331. a few weeks ago.

  332. We're to be lights

  333. and to be sanctuaries

  334. out in the world.

  335. Places of peace,

  336. but first to each other

  337. within here

  338. so that this is a place of peace.

  339. And then we take that peace

  340. into the relationships around us.

  341. And then we're properly

  342. postured and positioned

  343. to share that love of God.

  344. And you can start

  345. just simply by asking questions

  346. and then listening.

  347. Okay?

  348. Listening to love.

  349. Listening to hear

  350. where the world is hurting.

  351. And that, guess what?

  352. That world is here.

  353. We're hurting too.

  354. Think about listening

  355. to each other here

  356. so that you can go listen

  357. out there.

  358. And then he goes on

  359. to say humble mind,

  360. brotherly love.

  361. We'll start with

  362. brotherly love, tender heart.

  363. What does that mean?

  364. Being tender hearted

  365. comes more naturally

  366. to some more than others, right?

  367. However difficult

  368. though that journey may be,

  369. the early Christians

  370. would have agreed

  371. on the fact

  372. that they were called

  373. to become tender hearted

  374. no matter how difficult it was.

  375. That was going to be

  376. a staple characteristic

  377. of the community.

  378. Humble mind,

  379. what does that mean?

  380. So humble mind

  381. actually ties together

  382. the three attitudes before it.

  383. That phrase, humble mind.

  384. And what I mean is that

  385. if you have that humble mind,

  386. you're going to have

  387. those other three things.

  388. And one commentator

  389. describes it this way,

  390. a humble mind

  391. shows that the secret

  392. of the character

  393. described here

  394. lies in a realistic estimate

  395. of oneself

  396. and a high concern

  397. for others.

  398. So it starts

  399. by looking outside yourself

  400. and putting a higher view

  401. of that one outside of you

  402. than yourself.

  403. I love the language

  404. of the,

  405. there's a translation

  406. of the Bible

  407. called the message

  408. and it's meant to be

  409. as a tool,

  410. not a replacement.

  411. But it says it this way,

  412. it helps to get my head

  413. around these.

  414. Be agreeable,

  415. be sympathetic,

  416. be loving,

  417. be compassionate,

  418. be humble.

  419. That goes for all of you,

  420. no exceptions.

  421. And one of the things

  422. that I also love

  423. about Scripture

  424. is how it interprets itself.

  425. The Word of God

  426. will help you understand

  427. the Word of God.

  428. And it reinforces itself.

  429. And it's not just Coach Peter

  430. who says these things.

  431. And it's not just Coach Peter

  432. who talks about this aroma

  433. of grace.

  434. So does Coach Paul.

  435. And listen to what Coach Paul

  436. says in Ephesians.

  437. I therefore,

  438. a prisoner for the Lord,

  439. urge you to walk

  440. in a manner worthy

  441. of the calling

  442. to which you've been called.

  443. With all humility

  444. and gentleness,

  445. with patience,

  446. bearing with one another

  447. in love,

  448. eager to maintain

  449. the unity of the Spirit

  450. in the bond of peace.

  451. Okay, now some of you

  452. may be thinking,

  453. nope,

  454. not going to do that.

  455. Not possible for me

  456. in my current situation

  457. that I'm in.

  458. You don't understand.

  459. But it is.

  460. Okay?

  461. When we stop thinking

  462. about ourselves,

  463. which is hard,

  464. guilty,

  465. and we start calling

  466. on the power of God,

  467. amazing things can happen

  468. in your relationships.

  469. And remember,

  470. what God is doing

  471. with us as a church.

  472. He said it earlier

  473. in 1 Peter.

  474. He's building us

  475. into a spiritual house

  476. where He dwells.

  477. And how's all that happening?

  478. Not through your power,

  479. but through the power

  480. of the Holy Spirit.

  481. So before you give yourself

  482. the test

  483. and you're destined

  484. to fail

  485. on your own strength,

  486. stop it.

  487. Okay?

  488. Take that to God,

  489. whatever the situation is

  490. that pops in your brain.

  491. And remember,

  492. He's at work in you.

  493. He's the one

  494. forming you

  495. into these things.

  496. But we have to start

  497. by being honest

  498. about where we need

  499. to be that open door.

  500. To open the door

  501. of our hearts

  502. and to be that open door

  503. for the world

  504. to talk to.

  505. And the passage,

  506. this passage,

  507. gives us that opportunity

  508. because it's possible

  509. to have the Holy Spirit

  510. in you.

  511. It's a Holy Spirit resident,

  512. but not president.

  513. Okay?

  514. So,

  515. what does living this way

  516. look like?

  517. We'll go faster

  518. through these.

  519. Don't repay

  520. evil for evil

  521. or reviling for reviling.

  522. But on the contrary,

  523. bless,

  524. for to this you are called

  525. that you may obtain

  526. a blessing.

  527. So,

  528. in another way,

  529. you remember,

  530. we talked a few weeks ago

  531. about living stones.

  532. Living stones

  533. don't just sit.

  534. Well,

  535. Peter's giving us more info.

  536. Living stones

  537. are living blessings.

  538. They go live blessings.

  539. That's what we do.

  540. That's what the stones do.

  541. We live that blessing

  542. to one another

  543. and we go live

  544. that blessing to the world.

  545. And when we do,

  546. the world sees

  547. the power of God

  548. at work in us

  549. because we can't do that

  550. on our own.

  551. I was speaking with someone

  552. this past week.

  553. One of the most powerful things

  554. in evangelism

  555. to the world

  556. is emotional health.

  557. Did you know that?

  558. That your wounds

  559. are actually

  560. the open door

  561. to share the love of God.

  562. But one of the things

  563. that the world notices

  564. the most

  565. is how you're still walking.

  566. And so focusing

  567. on our own emotional health

  568. is one of the greatest steps

  569. towards evangelism

  570. because it's one

  571. of the greatest doorways

  572. to talk about

  573. where you found the healing.

  574. And the world notices

  575. that seems to be

  576. one of the number one things

  577. that makes us approachable

  578. or not approachable

  579. is

  580. are you emotionally healthy?

  581. Because they're watching

  582. in this post-Christian world.

  583. But Peter says

  584. we're to bless

  585. in verse 9.

  586. So just like

  587. humble mind

  588. summed up verse 8.

  589. Peter uses that word

  590. bless to sum up

  591. all of verses 8 and 9.

  592. All of these attitudes

  593. and virtues

  594. of the heart

  595. can be summed up

  596. in that one word.

  597. Bless.

  598. And what does blessing mean?

  599. One commentator says this

  600. I love this definition.

  601. The calling down

  602. of God's gracious power

  603. and love

  604. on all people

  605. even those

  606. who wish to do us harm.

  607. Who does that sound like?

  608. Hmm.

  609. Jesus.

  610. Right?

  611. Blessing instead of cursing.

  612. Praying for those

  613. who persecute.

  614. Forgiving our debtors

  615. as we have been

  616. forgiven.

  617. And how can we do this?

  618. First by opening

  619. the doors of darkness

  620. in our own hearts

  621. to the power

  622. of the light

  623. of the living God.

  624. And only you

  625. can open that door.

  626. I can't open that for you.

  627. Your neighbor

  628. can't open that for you

  629. but you can.

  630. You can go and open

  631. that door to God

  632. right now.

  633. You can call

  634. on that resource

  635. and that power

  636. of the Holy Spirit

  637. available nowhere else

  638. than to God himself.

  639. And when you do

  640. he's going to come in there

  641. and he's going to do

  642. some business

  643. in your heart

  644. and he's going to show you

  645. the relationships

  646. in your life

  647. that he's calling

  648. you to

  649. to have an impact

  650. for him.

  651. And typically

  652. it's going to start

  653. with the ones

  654. that probably

  655. aren't that great.

  656. They're a mess.

  657. That's okay.

  658. I don't want that

  659. to scare you.

  660. That's the whole purpose

  661. of needing a savior.

  662. You're a mess.

  663. You don't have it together.

  664. Neither do I.

  665. We're broken messes

  666. but Jesus takes

  667. broken things

  668. and he makes them beautiful.

  669. How?

  670. Because he was broken.

  671. And that's beautiful.

  672. And he offers you

  673. eternal life.

  674. He was broken for you

  675. so you don't have to go

  676. be broken for yourself

  677. and punish yourself

  678. over and over.

  679. In fact he's called you

  680. to be a part

  681. of cleaning up the mess.

  682. And when you do

  683. you're going to find purpose

  684. but it starts

  685. with relationships.

  686. It starts with you

  687. letting them in there.

  688. Letting them in your heart

  689. and look around.

  690. Ask him to dwell there

  691. and while he's in there

  692. you've got to keep your eyes

  693. on the scoreboard

  694. and the scoreboard

  695. says you win.

  696. When you look around

  697. the world

  698. it says oh this is bad.

  699. Scoreboard says we win.

  700. Okay?

  701. We win because Jesus wins.

  702. We're going to talk

  703. about that this week.

  704. Right?

  705. We get to see

  706. the light

  707. and the darkness

  708. of the gospel story

  709. as we lead

  710. into this Easter week.

  711. But only you

  712. can open that door.

  713. The message says it this way

  714. no retaliation

  715. no sharp tongue sarcasm

  716. instead bless

  717. that's your job

  718. bless.

  719. You'll be a blessing

  720. and also get a blessing.

  721. And what's the blessing?

  722. First

  723. it's this

  724. that

  725. you're going to experience

  726. the blessing

  727. of living a life

  728. that doesn't retaliate

  729. with anger.

  730. You're going to have

  731. freedom

  732. from the prison of anger.

  733. The prison of comparison.

  734. It's only realized

  735. through a life

  736. of forgiveness.

  737. forgiveness.

  738. These are some

  739. of the benefits

  740. of asking Christ

  741. to forgive you

  742. is that you actually

  743. get freedom.

  744. And it's only possible

  745. if you've experienced

  746. true forgiveness

  747. that's offered

  748. through Jesus' blood.

  749. And when you live

  750. a life of forgiveness

  751. like Peter described

  752. you're oftentimes

  753. going to be reviled

  754. for it.

  755. Okay?

  756. But you will be free.

  757. And what does

  758. that freedom look like?

  759. Unity of mind

  760. sympathy

  761. brotherly love

  762. tender hearts

  763. humble minds

  764. not repaying evil

  765. for evil

  766. or reviling

  767. for reviling

  768. but blessing.

  769. I've got

  770. a student

  771. who is in

  772. one of our

  773. youth groups

  774. a dear student

  775. who is in

  776. a gender transition

  777. right now

  778. and

  779. you know

  780. with what happened

  781. last week

  782. I didn't

  783. I wanted to reach out

  784. because most of the world

  785. and family

  786. has abandoned him

  787. but I still love him

  788. and

  789. he identifies

  790. as a female now

  791. so

  792. it's still hard

  793. for me to say that

  794. to say him

  795. so I just texted him

  796. how you doing

  797. with the recent news

  798. he lives in Nashville

  799. the world is so crazy

  800. right now

  801. I don't even have

  802. much time to absorb it

  803. taking this to heart

  804. I said well you know what

  805. it's a good time

  806. for me to remind you

  807. that I love you

  808. you are bringing

  809. something to the world

  810. and I love you

  811. and I love you

  812. you know

  813. he sent something back

  814. right

  815. we're still

  816. still in that relationship

  817. there's an opportunity

  818. to bless him

  819. and then he returned

  820. a blessing

  821. and so you got

  822. that blessing

  823. of living that life

  824. of forgiveness

  825. not anger

  826. we don't have to retaliate

  827. we don't have to be

  828. so up in arms

  829. about everything

  830. we should be

  831. the least easily

  832. offended people

  833. on earth

  834. if Christ is at work

  835. in us

  836. but the blessing

  837. of freedom

  838. also means

  839. the future blessing

  840. of hope

  841. that you have

  842. that scoreboard

  843. that's been won

  844. the eternal life

  845. that's ahead

  846. where you're going

  847. to live

  848. in the presence

  849. of the one

  850. who's forgiven you

  851. is free

  852. you're going

  853. to worship

  854. and experience

  855. that new creation

  856. forever

  857. and you get

  858. to take that invitation

  859. right now

  860. to the world

  861. that's what you offer

  862. them when you go

  863. and enter into

  864. the relationship

  865. and you take

  866. your hurt

  867. and your emotional

  868. unhealthiness

  869. and talking about

  870. how God

  871. has gotten you

  872. through it

  873. guess what

  874. they need that too

  875. and ultimately

  876. you get to hold

  877. their hand

  878. and take them

  879. to Jesus

  880. okay

  881. then verses

  882. 10 through 12

  883. there

  884. whoever desires

  885. to love life

  886. and seek good days

  887. don't you want

  888. to love life

  889. and seek good days

  890. here's the key

  891. let him keep

  892. his tongue

  893. from evil

  894. and his lips

  895. from speaking deceit

  896. oh that's easy

  897. let him turn away

  898. from evil

  899. and do good

  900. okay

  901. let him seek

  902. peace

  903. and pursue it

  904. got it

  905. for the eyes

  906. of the Lord

  907. are on the righteous

  908. and his ears

  909. are open

  910. to their prayer

  911. but the face

  912. of the Lord

  913. is against

  914. those who do evil

  915. may not seem so

  916. but it is

  917. may not seem so

  918. when you look around

  919. but it is ultimately

  920. and one day

  921. those two things

  922. will line up

  923. so Peter goes on

  924. now

  925. and this is what

  926. I love too

  927. about the reliability

  928. of scripture

  929. if you doubt

  930. the trustworthiness

  931. of this book

  932. they quote

  933. from things

  934. that were written

  935. hundreds and hundreds

  936. of years earlier

  937. and all these things

  938. line up

  939. you go look at your Bible

  940. we've taken the oldest documents

  941. and the newest documents

  942. you compare them

  943. it's 99.9999% accurate

  944. yes there are some errors

  945. in your Bible

  946. but you know what

  947. they're like punctuation

  948. and little things

  949. here and there

  950. and it was transmission stuff

  951. but there's no other document

  952. that is as accurate

  953. and attested to

  954. as the scriptures

  955. people aren't going to tell you

  956. that very often

  957. it's true

  958. you can back it up

  959. there's all the data

  960. that's not a lie

  961. so when you read this

  962. know that what you're reading

  963. is accurate

  964. now what we do

  965. with it is the hard part

  966. right

  967. it's telling us

  968. to go do something

  969. so Peter's going on now

  970. to say

  971. I'm backing all this up

  972. with the Old Testament

  973. just like he did

  974. in chapter 2

  975. about living stones

  976. he backed it up

  977. with the Old Testament

  978. and then he talked

  979. about the living stones

  980. he quoted from Psalms

  981. he's doing that again here

  982. because he's a human

  983. and he writes

  984. and he has similarities

  985. so living stones

  986. are living blessings

  987. so a life of blessing

  988. doesn't curse

  989. doesn't retaliate

  990. it doesn't speak deceit

  991. it doesn't pursue evil

  992. it pursues peace

  993. does that describe you

  994. in your current relationships

  995. with other Christians

  996. does that describe you

  997. in your current relationships

  998. with those around you

  999. it's hard

  1000. it's messy

  1001. but that's

  1002. that's what we're supposed to do

  1003. okay

  1004. are you doing it

  1005. blessed are the peacemakers

  1006. Jesus said

1007. for they shall be called

  1008. sons of God

  1009. where is the Lord's

  1010. attentive ear

  1011. and caring eyes

  1012. they're on the righteous

  1013. it says

  1014. okay

1015. well who are the righteous

1016. how do you get that

  1017. for our sake

1018. he made him to be sin

  1019. who knew no sin

  1020. so that in him

  1021. we might become

  1022. the righteousness of God

  1023. it's not us

  1024. it's foreign

  1025. it's an alien righteousness

  1026. that's given to us

  1027. by Jesus

1028. and he paid the price

1029. for the gift on the cross

1030. so if we confess our sins

  1031. he's faithful and just

1032. to forgive us our sins

  1033. and to cleanse us

  1034. from all unrighteousness

  1035. aka we become

  1036. the righteous

  1037. and God's attentive eye

  1038. and listening ear

  1039. are always on

  1040. the righteous

  1041. that's you

1042. if you have faith in Christ

  1043. he clothes you

  1044. in his righteousness

  1045. so in these verses

  1046. this is really cool

  1047. Peter's quoting

  1048. from Psalm 34

  1049. 12 through 16

1050. and this was a psalm

  1051. of thanks

1052. for God to deliver David

  1053. remember he was

  1054. asking to be delivered

  1055. from king of Gath

  1056. okay

  1057. referred to as

  1058. Abimelech

  1059. in the title

1060. of that area of your Bible

  1061. so David was delivered

  1062. from the king

  1063. after he

  1064. changed his behavior

  1065. is what it says

  1066. now do you remember

1067. how he changed his behavior

1068. to get out of there

  1069. he was trapped

1070. so he tried to act

1071. like he was going insane

  1072. he just started

  1073. you know

  1074. he just started

1075. freaking out a little bit

  1076. to scare somebody

  1077. he did that

  1078. and the king

  1079. let him go free

  1080. so Peter's

  1081. playing off that theme

  1082. by quoting the psalm

  1083. and when

  1084. as Christians

  1085. when we live

  1086. the way he describes

  1087. get this

  1088. lives of freedom

  1089. in Christ

  1090. when we change

  1091. our behavior

  1092. the world's

  1093. going to think

  1094. we've gone mad

1095. but we are the ones

  1096. who are set

  1097. free

  1098. isn't that beautiful

  1099. that's the blessing

1100. that when we come to God

  1101. we're set free

  1102. though his face

  1103. is against the evildoer

  1104. his eyes

  1105. are on the righteous

1106. so to turn your face

  1107. is to turn

  1108. your back

  1109. okay

  1110. we are called

  1111. to repent

  1112. and turn our back

  1113. on evil

  1114. and run

  1115. to him

  1116. but how

  1117. there's only one place

  1118. where God the Father

  1119. turned his back

  1120. on evil

1121. and it was the evil

  1122. of our sin

  1123. and this

1124. is why on the cross

  1125. Jesus bled

  1126. and he cried out

  1127. my God

  1128. my God

  1129. why have you

  1130. forsaken me

  1131. that's true justice

  1132. why have you

  1133. turned your back

  1134. on me

  1135. God

  1136. it's a rhetorical

  1137. question

  1138. it's because

  1139. of us

  1140. and it's for us

1141. so that we could have

  1142. the blessing

  1143. that Peter

  1144. is speaking of

  1145. in these verses

  1146. to be adopted

  1147. as children of God

  1148. and then to invite

  1149. others into the family

  1150. who has access

  1151. at all the times

  1152. to the loving ear

  1153. of King Jesus

  1154. who always has access

  1155. to the power

  1156. of forgiveness

  1157. who has always

  1158. the future hope

  1159. of heaven

  1160. and eternity

  1161. who possesses

  1162. this knowledge

  1163. this power

  1164. and carries it around

  1165. in their bodies

  1166. the church

  1167. okay

  1168. those who have been

  1169. adopted as sons

  1170. and daughters

  1171. of the living God

  1172. through faith

  1173. in the sacrifice

  1174. of Jesus

  1175. and live this life

  1176. of freedom

  1177. in Christ

  1178. unity of mind

  1179. sympathy

  1180. brotherly love

  1181. tender heart

  1182. humble minds

  1183. can't lose

  1184. the aroma

  1185. of God's grace

  1186. to a grace

  1187. and love

  1188. hungry world

  1189. and here's

  1190. why it matters

  1191. because the culture

  1192. is looking for

  1193. an alternative

  1194. to itself

  1195. not an echo

  1196. of itself

  1197. and a divided world

  1198. needs a united church

  1199. you are the church

  1200. that's you

  1201. remember your purpose

  1202. it's greater

  1203. than anything

  1204. you can conjure up

  1205. on your own

1206. if you are a child

  1207. of God

  1208. you are a uniter

  1209. of this world

1210. in the name of Jesus

1211. by taking him to him

  1212. these verses

  1213. aren't just about

  1214. being moral

  1215. they're not about

  1216. trying harder

  1217. they're not about

  1218. doing better

  1219. they're about

  1220. remembering your

  1221. true identity

  1222. in Jesus

  1223. living stones

  1224. built on the

  1225. chief cornerstone

  1226. being built up

  1227. to that spiritual

  1228. house

  1229. literal walking

  1230. temples of the

  1231. Holy Spirit

  1232. living stones

  1233. who are living

  1234. blessings

  1235. living stones

  1236. who are the

  1237. children of God

  1238. and how we live

  1239. says something

  1240. really important

  1241. about dad

  1242. he knows

  1243. that when his

  1244. children get along

  1245. and treat one

  1246. another this way

  1247. other people want

  1248. to be in our

  1249. family

  1250. and it's so important

  1251. that we live this

1252. way that he gave us

  1253. the Holy Spirit

  1254. the power of the

  1255. resurrection

  1256. to be able to

  1257. live this way

  1258. so the companionship

  1259. of Jesus

  1260. in every single

  1261. moment is available

  1262. to you

  1263. the place where

  1264. we're supposed to

  1265. be safe and

  1266. practice all of

  1267. this

  1268. is right here

  1269. and this is

  1270. what the world

  1271. needs to experience

  1272. from us

  1273. how

  1274. they do it

  1275. through you

  1276. so

  1277. in closing

  1278. church

  1279. who are you

  1280. I love this

  1281. quote

  1282. the church is a

  1283. beloved family

  1284. created by God

  1285. and redeemed by

  1286. the gospel

  1287. called to be the

  1288. primary means by

  1289. which God shows

  1290. and tells his story

  1291. of redemption in

  1292. Jesus

  1293. and he tells it

  1294. with your life

  1295. he tells it with

  1296. your wounds

  1297. he tells it with

  1298. all of the things

  1299. that he's made

  1300. you to be

  1301. and he's put

  1302. you uniquely

  1303. in one place

  1304. to go share

  1305. it with somebody

  1306. else

  1307. so what do

  1308. you do with

  1309. that

  1310. I challenge you

  1311. to look inside

  1312. first

  1313. okay

  1314. where do you

  1315. need to open

  1316. the doors of

  1317. darkness in your

  1318. heart to God

  1319. today and let

  1320. him walk around

  1321. okay

  1322. start there

  1323. so look inside

  1324. then look around

  1325. once you know

  1326. it's probably

  1327. going to be a

  1328. person that you

  1329. need to go do

  1330. something with

  1331. make something

  1332. right

  1333. call somebody

  1334. once you know

  1335. okay

  1336. go to that

  1337. person

  1338. if you need

  1339. help

  1340. take somebody

  1341. with you

  1342. and when you

  1343. go to that

  1344. person you

  1345. have to seek

  1346. peace

  1347. and sometimes

  1348. you have to

  1349. pursue it in

  1350. community

  1351. okay

  1352. you don't have

  1353. to go it

  1354. alone

  1355. we're living

  1356. stones right

  1357. and living

  1358. stones don't

  1359. just sit but

  1360. they hold one

  1361. another up

  1362. where two or

  1363. more are

  1364. gathered there

  1365. I am in

  1366. their midst

  1367. where do you

  1368. need to go be

  1369. that living

  1370. blessing today

  1371. in a relationship

  1372. in the same

  1373. way that

  1374. you would run

  1375. after your dog

  1376. if he bolted

  1377. out the door

  1378. and ran into

  1379. traffic

  1380. don't expect

  1381. peace to come

  1382. to you

  1383. when you

  1384. whistle

  1385. it has to be

  1386. pursued

  1387. all right

  1388. and that may

  1389. require us

  1390. learning some

  1391. new habits

  1392. it's all about

  1393. that freedom

  1394. of forgiveness

  1395. though

  1396. so look

  1397. inside

  1398. look around

  1399. and then go

  1400. live a blessing

  1401. seek that

  1402. peace

  1403. peace

  1404. it's all

  1405. about that

  1406. freedom

  1407. and without

  1408. your brothers

  1409. or sisters

  1410. you can't

  1411. do it

  1412. okay

  1413. you just

  1414. can't do

  1415. it

  1416. so by the

  1417. power of the

  1418. Holy Spirit

  1419. though

  1420. at work in

  1421. us the church

  1422. you can go

  1423. proclaim Jesus

  1424. as alive to

  1425. this whole world

  1426. don't you want

  1427. to do that

  1428. let's go

  1429. proclaim him

  1430. as alive

  1431. because this

  1432. culture

  1433. is looking

  1434. for an

  1435. alternative

  1436. to itself

  1437. not an

  1438. echo

  1439. of itself

  1440. a divided

  1441. world needs

  1442. a united

  1443. church

  1444. and you

  1445. are the

  1446. church

  1447. let's pray

  1448. father

  1449. on this

  1450. Palm Sunday

  1451. I thank you

  1452. father that you

  1453. hold us

  1454. and that it

  1455. was your

  1456. palms

  1457. father

  1458. that held

  1459. the reins

  1460. of the

  1461. foal

  1462. it was your

  1463. palms that

  1464. washed the

  1465. feet of your

  1466. disciples

  1467. and father

  1468. it was your

  1469. palms that

  1470. were bound

  1471. to the

  1472. cross

  1473. and lord

  1474. you've come

  1475. to save

  1476. us

  1477. you've come

  1478. to redeem

  1479. us

  1480. and you've

  1481. come to

  1482. make us

  1483. yours

  1484. and Jesus

  1485. only you

  1486. only you

  1487. father

  1488. can make

  1489. us

  1490. slave

  1491. for these

  1492. slaves of

  1493. sin and

  1494. fear and

  1495. despair

  1496. into prisoners

  1497. of hope

  1498. lord

  1499. jesus

  1500. you have

  1501. you are

  1502. and you

  1503. will forever

  1504. continue to

  1505. do that

  1506. thank you

  1507. lord for

  1508. these words

  1509. and that

  1510. prayer

  1511. those are

  1512. not my

  1513. words

  1514. that

  1515. scotty

  1516. smith

  1517. wrote

  1518. and lord

  1519. i pray

  1520. that you

  1521. would do

  1522. something

  1523. magnificent

  1524. with this

  1525. church

  1526. take us

  1527. into this

  1528. world

  1529. and use

  1530. us father

  1531. as those

  1532. blessings

  1533. praise you

  1534. god

  1535. it's in the

  1536. name of

  1537. jesus i pray

  1538. amen
