  1. You are listening to a message from Southwood Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama.

  2. Our passion is to experience and express grace.

  3. Join us.

  4. Before we jump back into the next passage of 1 Peter this morning, our passage today

  5. gives us the opportunity to talk about a theological concept called the perspicuity

  6. of Scripture and who here is not looking for a chance to talk about the Bible's perspicuity,

  7. right?

  8. That is why you came this morning.

  9. It means the clarity of God's Word.

  10. That's why they pick such a clear word like perspicuity for clarity, okay?

  11. That'll help you remember.

  12. It means the fact that we can understand God's Word.

  13. I bet that every one of us at some point has read part of the Bible.

  14. Perhaps even this week if you're doing the Bible reading plan with us, you may have been

  15. in the book of Leviticus and you've read a passage and thought, I don't have a clue what that means.

  16. I don't understand that at all.

  17. And I hope this encourages you.

  18. Some parts of the Bible are harder to understand than others, but even when that's true, the message

  19. of God's Word is clear.

  20. It's perspicuous, if you will.

  21. Listen to how the Westminster Confession of Faith says this.

  22. All things in Scripture are not alike plain in themselves, nor alike clear unto all.

  23. Yet those things which are necessary to be known, believed, and observed for salvation

  24. are so clearly propounded and opened in some place of Scripture or other,

  25. that not only the learned, but the unlearned, in a due use of the ordinary means, may attain

  26. unto a sufficient understanding of them.

  27. God gives us His Word so that we might know Him.

  28. So that we might know how to live in relationship with Him, which does not require a seminary degree.

  29. Did you know that?

  30. It does not require a correct understanding of every theological detail.

  31. Thank goodness.

  32. Amen?

  33. It's about a relationship.

  34. So remember, when it feels confusing or difficult as you're reading God's Word,

  35. it's not because He's hiding from you.

  36. He's showing you Himself in some ways that are easier for you to access than others.

  37. Peter says later in his second letter, chapter 3, verse 16,

  38. that some things that Paul writes are hard to understand.

  39. Is that not encouraging to you?

  40. Peter found some things that this crazy Paul guy wrote to be hard to understand.

  41. Some of you have found some things Paul wrote to be hard to understand.

  42. But he says, don't be distracted when that happens.

  43. Rather, grow in grace and the knowledge of Jesus Christ.

  44. Don't miss that.

  45. Those crucial things are the clearest things, right?

  46. God reveals Himself so that we might know Him,

  47. so that we might understand ourselves,

  48. so that we might find life as He designed us to have it.

  49. Why all this talk about clarity, about perspicuity?

  50. Well, this passage in 1 Peter 3 that we're about to read

  51. has for centuries been referred to

  52. as the most difficult to understand in the whole New Testament.

  53. Many theologians, all sorts of people with different opinions about what it means,

  54. but they agree on this.

  55. It's hard to understand, and I'm not sure.

  56. And I've read, and I've studied a lot,

  57. and I'm not sure I have the right understanding of this passage,

  58. which leaves the potential this morning for a really unclear sermon, right?

  59. I want to be honest about that with you.

  60. I also don't want that to discourage you.

  61. I want us to expect that the things God most wants us to hear,

  62. His Spirit will speak clearly to our hearts as we open His Word.

  63. That's what He does.

  64. He loves to do that, okay?

  65. So we're going to look at this,

  66. and we're going to trust Him to speak clearly to us.

  67. And after I read it, you'll start praying for me that we will understand.

  68. 1 Peter 3, beginning at verse 18,

  69. this is the inerrant, infallible, even perspicuous Word of God,

  70. the God who loves us so much that He wants us to know Him.

  71. For Christ also suffered once for sins,

  72. the righteous for the unrighteous,

  73. that He might bring us to God.

  74. being put to death in the flesh,

  75. but made alive in the Spirit,

  76. in which He went and proclaimed to the spirits in prison,

  77. because they formerly did not obey,

  78. when God's patience waited in the days of Noah,

  79. while the ark was being prepared,

  80. in which a few, that is, eight persons,

  81. were brought safely through water.

  82. baptism, which corresponds to this,

  83. now saves you,

  84. not as a removal of dirt from the body,

  85. but as an appeal to God for a good conscience

  86. through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,

  87. who has gone into heaven

  88. and is at the right hand of God

  89. with angels, authorities, and powers,

  90. having been subjected to Him.

  91. Let's pray together.

  92. Father, we do ask for Your help,

  93. that You, by Your Spirit,

  94. would be our teacher this morning.

  95. Not merely because we want to know

  96. what this means,

  97. although we ask for Your insight,

  98. for Your Spirit to shine light on this Word

  99. that we have just read.

  100. There's nothing more important

  101. than Your Word for us to understand.

  102. But Father, we ask it because

  103. we want to love and trust

  104. our Savior more,

  105. to know where our hope should be,

  106. to know in the difficulties of life

  107. what to hold on to and how to do that.

  108. So would You speak to us clearly

  109. and give us ears to hear

  110. and hearts to obey and love and trust.

  111. We ask it in Jesus' name.

  112. Amen.

  113. Last week we noticed

  114. that the rest of Peter's letter

  115. that we're studying here

  116. focuses on suffering

  117. in the lives of God's people.

  118. He's wanting us to endure faithfully

  119. in a world that is not our home.

  120. Now here's our picture

  121. of the Ukrainian violinist

  122. if you were here last week.

  123. He wants us to endure

  124. by remembering who we are, right?

  125. Held in His hand.

  126. Part of a courageous people

  127. with an eternal hope.

  128. And in verses 13 to 18,

  129. the key principle about suffering

  130. was that those bad things in our lives

  131. provide good opportunities

  132. for sharing with others

  133. the eternal hope that we have in Jesus.

  134. Today,

  135. in the verses we just read,

  136. the principle about suffering

  137. builds on that.

  138. Because Jesus has endured our sufferings,

  139. we can be assured

  140. we will enjoy His victory.

  141. Where do we get that hope

  142. that we're called to share,

  143. especially in the dark times?

  144. Where does that come from?

  145. It comes from our connection with Jesus.

  146. Our union with Christ.

  147. That's what gives us this assurance.

  148. And it's really glorious.

  149. Y'all,

  150. can we just stay in verse 18

  151. for a while this morning?

  152. Can we vote on that?

  153. Let's just talk about verse 18.

  154. For all the complexity

  155. and confusion

  156. of verses 19 to 21,

  157. the good news of verse 18

  158. is amazingly clear

  159. and perspicuous

  160. and glorious.

  161. Okay, let's start there.

  162. Our connection to Jesus here

  163. begins with Jesus

  164. entering our sufferings.

  165. That's the connection in verse 18

  166. from what we've been reading.

  167. Hey, Christians suffering unjust,

  168. Christ also suffered.

  169. That's what Peter's saying.

  170. Christ also suffered horribly.

  171. Emotionally, physically,

  172. spiritually, unjustly.

  173. Jesus has endured the sufferings

  174. of a world that is not His home.

  175. In fact, Jesus so identifies,

  176. not with His successful people.

  177. Interesting.

  178. Jesus so identifies

  179. with His suffering people,

  180. He's so close to them in that,

  181. that when Saul,

  182. who's about to become Paul

  183. in this story,

  184. is killing Christians,

  185. is persecuting the church,

  186. the followers of Jesus,

  187. Jesus confronts Saul on the road

  188. and says,

  189. Saul, Saul,

  190. why do you persecute

  191. me?

  192. Isn't that amazing?

  193. How closely Jesus identifies

  194. with those of His people

  195. who are struggling.

  196. If you feel the pain of suffering

  197. as a child of God today,

  198. be assured,

  199. your older brother feels it with you.

  200. He hurts with you.

  201. And that's because

  202. He has hurt like you

  203. for you.

  204. This is the glorious good news of Jesus.

  205. When He suffered,

  206. it wasn't merely to empathize

  207. with your sufferings.

  208. It was to end your sufferings

  209. once and for all,

  210. one day, forever.

  211. Right?

  212. Christ also suffered once,

  213. once and for all,

  214. for sins,

  215. the righteous Him

  216. for the unrighteous you

  217. that He might bring you to God.

  218. Don't miss the glorious message

  219. of the gracious Savior.

  220. Every one of us

  221. has a sin and shame problem.

  222. We're messed up.

  223. We feel that the dirt

  224. that is on us,

  225. it clings to us

  226. and we want to hide it, right?

  227. We don't want to be seen

  228. and exposed.

  229. And He washed it away

  230. by forgiving our sins,

  231. all of them,

  232. by washing us clean.

  233. Every one of us

  234. has a guilt problem,

  235. a huge debt

  236. that we can't pay.

  237. We can't afford it.

  238. But He paid it all

  239. in our place.

  240. It was our sins.

  241. Let's be clear, right?

  242. Jesus was on the cross

  243. for our sins,

  244. not His.

  245. Our sins deserved the cross.

  246. And every one of us

  247. has a relationship problem,

  248. not just a sin and shame problem,

  249. not just a guilt problem.

  250. We've got this relationship problem

  251. where we're distant from God.

  252. We're separated from Him

  253. because of all this sin

  254. that we've talked about,

  255. the very God we were created

  256. to live with

  257. and that's the purpose of life.

  258. We're stuck away from Him.

  259. And Jesus brought us back

  260. near to God.

  261. The good news of Jesus

  262. is that you don't have to fix

  263. any of these problems yourself.

  264. You don't.

  265. It's not up to you.

  266. You are connected to your Savior.

  267. You are so covered

  268. by your substitute

  269. that you are safe

  270. and accepted

  271. and beloved forever.

  272. That's the glory of grace, right?

  273. That is the simplicity

  274. of substitution

  275. that Jesus stands in your place

  276. and before the throne

  277. of God above

  278. I have a strong

  279. and perfect plea.

  280. It's not something I've done.

  281. It's a great high priest

  282. whose name is love

  283. who ever lives

  284. and he pleads for me, right?

  285. He stands there in my place.

  286. So we sing

  287. the vilest offender

  288. who truly believes

  289. that moment from Jesus

  290. a pardon receives.

  291. Amen?

  292. That's why we sing that

  293. because Jesus has indeed

  294. won our forgiveness

  295. at the cost of his blood

  296. on the cross.

  297. Praise the Lord, right?

  298. Friend, listen.

  299. If you don't stand

  300. covered by Jesus right now,

  301. if you don't know

  302. that that's who you are

  303. is that you are his

  304. and that he is yours,

  305. please don't let anything

  306. after verse 18

  307. distract you

  308. from the wonder

  309. and the glory

  310. of Jesus

  311. offering himself

  312. to you right now

  313. to cover you today

  314. and forever.

  315. Receive his mercy

  316. substituting in your place.

  317. That's all it takes.

  318. Rejoice in this

  319. brand new relationship

  320. with the God

  321. who made you

  322. and loves you

  323. and wants to know you.

  324. Jesus gives you

  325. that relationship again.

  326. That is the clear hope

  327. of this passage.

  328. Sins dealt with.

  329. Man and God

  330. set right.

  331. Unworthy prodigals

  332. brought back home

  333. covered by Jesus

  334. once and for all.

  335. That's there for you

  336. for all of us today.

  337. I've told you before

  338. one of my favorite pictures

  339. of this

  340. from a PBS documentary

  341. about sheep.

  342. The story begins

  343. with an orphaned sheep

  344. who will most surely die

  345. the narrator tells us.

  346. Every time

  347. the little sheep

  348. runs up

  349. to the milk

  350. that he needs to live

  351. the ewe lambs

  352. kick him away

  353. because he doesn't

  354. belong to them.

  355. That's us, right?

  356. Far from God

  357. deserving death

  358. unworthy

  359. not belonging

  360. in his family.

  361. Death

  362. is coming soon.

  363. But then the mood

  364. of the music

  365. turns hopeful

  366. and you know

  367. something good

  368. is coming

  369. and the narrator

  370. says,

  371. ah,

  372. but the shepherd

  373. knows best.

  374. And what the shepherd

  375. does is he goes

  376. and he finds

  377. one of the little lambs

  378. that is nursing

  379. with his mother

  380. and he takes that lamb

  381. and he shears

  382. his wool coat

  383. off of him

  384. and then he scoops

  385. up the orphaned

  386. lamb in his arms

  387. and he puts

  388. that coat

  389. leg by leg

  390. over that little lamb

  391. and he puts him

  392. back down

  393. and he sends him

  394. running right back

  395. over to the mother

  396. of the first lamb

  397. who bends over

  398. and sniffs

  399. and feels

  400. and welcomes him

  401. back in

  402. recognizing her child

  403. she brings

  404. this orphaned lamb

  405. back in

  406. to tend for

  407. and care for

  408. as her own child

  409. accepted

  410. and beloved

  411. and saved.

  412. Listen,

  413. especially if you've

  414. never trusted

  415. Jesus before.

  416. Jesus,

  417. the lamb of God,

  418. the rightful son

  419. offers you

  420. his coat.

  421. Offers to cover you

  422. no matter what

  423. you've done,

  424. no matter where

  425. you've been,

  426. no matter how little

  427. you deserve

  428. to be in his family

  429. and if you put

  430. that coat on

  431. God won't be fooled

  432. by it,

  433. he sees you.

  434. He will be delighted

  435. to welcome you

  436. into his family

  437. to feed you

  438. from the bounty

  439. of his table

  440. and the riches

  441. of his grace

  442. to keep you

  443. close to his side

  444. forever.

  445. It's all of grace.

  446. It's not up to

  447. how well you perform.

  448. You don't have to worry

  449. about that this morning.

  450. He has paid it all

  451. once and for all.

  452. It is finished.

  453. That's the gospel,

  454. dear friends.

  455. It's good news.

  456. If you don't know it

  457. and if that's not

  458. yours personally,

  459. there's nothing

  460. I would commend

  461. to you more.

  462. There's nothing

  463. I'd rather share

  464. with you.

  465. There's no hope

  466. I'd rather you have

  467. than that good news.

  468. Talk to any of us.

  469. We'd love to tell you

  470. more about Jesus.

  471. It's not complicated,

  472. but it's good,

  473. good news.

  474. Now there's more

  475. good news

  476. for us

  477. as we're in our suffering

  478. of how connected

  479. we are to Jesus.

  480. That reality

  481. that many of you know

  482. that you are

  483. connected to him

  484. and covered by him.

  485. It's just a little

  486. harder to understand

  487. as we keep going

  488. through this passage.

  489. I'm going to give you

  490. my best shot

  491. at seeing glorious

  492. gospel complexity.

  493. Some of you

  494. like complexity,

  495. right?

  496. So you're fired up

  497. about this.

  498. But Jesus was put

  499. to death

  500. in the realm

  501. of the physical

  502. but made alive

  503. in the realm

  504. of the spiritual.

  505. He had a body

  506. then too, right?

  507. Risen bodily

  508. from the dead.

  509. So the emphasis here

  510. is on the eternal

  511. lasting nature

  512. of the spiritual realm.

  513. And verse 19 says,

  514. in that manner,

  515. spiritual,

  516. he went and preached

  517. to spirits

  518. who are now in prison.

  519. Proclaiming to spirits

  520. in prison.

  521. Who is that?

  522. When did that happen?

  523. Why do we care?

  524. All very valid questions.

  525. Very few people

  526. agree on the answers.

  527. I think

  528. that the spirits

  529. in prison

  530. are unbelieving

  531. people

  532. who were on earth

  533. during the time

  534. of Noah

  535. and have now

  536. died

  537. and are in

  538. prison

  539. because of their

  540. unbelief

  541. and disobedience.

  542. And I think

  543. that Jesus preached

  544. to them

  545. back then

  546. in Noah's

  547. day

  548. through the

  549. spirit.

  550. Now one of the reasons

  551. earlier in this book,

  552. chapter 1,

  553. verse 11,

  554. Peter refers to

  555. these Old Testament

  556. prophets

  557. preaching

  558. as the spirit

  559. of Christ

  560. speaking

  561. through them.

  562. So when Noah

  563. foretells

  564. God's judgment

  565. in the form

  566. of a flood,

  567. he says,

  568. God told me

  569. a flood is coming,

  570. his judgment,

  571. and he calls

  572. the people of his day

  573. to find safety

  574. where?

  575. In the ark.

  576. He told me

  577. to build this ark.

  578. You need to come

  579. with me.

  580. You'll be safe.

  581. That's Jesus

  582. in the spiritual

  583. realm

  584. proclaiming

  585. to the people

  586. their need

  587. to repent

  588. and trust

  589. Yahweh.

  590. That's the only

  591. place they'll find

  592. safety.

  593. And I think

  594. why it comes up here

  595. is that Peter

  596. is recalling

  597. this other time

  598. many, many,

  599. many years ago

  600. where the people

  601. of God,

  602. Noah

  603. and his family,

  604. they were in

  605. the minority,

  606. they were suffering

  607. ridicule,

  608. and he's saying

  609. Jesus was there

  610. preaching by his

  611. spirit back then

  612. when,

  613. that word because

  614. could mean

  615. when they were

  616. not obeying,

  617. back in the days

  618. of Noah,

  619. building the ark

  620. and God being

  621. patient and not yet

  622. sending his judgment

  623. even though there was

  624. unbelief,

  625. he hadn't yet

  626. poured out his judgment,

  627. and that's when

  628. all this happened.

  629. Another reason I find

  630. this understanding

  631. to fit with Peter's

  632. flow of thought

  633. in this passage

  634. is that he just

  635. told us what

  636. last week?

  637. He told us to preach,

  638. to witness,

  639. to share the hope

  640. that we have

  641. in the midst

  642. of our suffering

  643. with anyone who asks,

  644. right?

  645. And now he's

  646. assuring us

  647. Jesus is with us

  648. in that preaching

  649. as well.

  650. In that difficult

  651. experience,

  652. Jesus has faced

  653. unbelief

  654. and scorn.

  655. An ark

  656. in a desert?

  657. Come on,

  658. Noah.

  659. Really?

  660. A resurrected

  661. Jesus?

  662. Come on,

  663. Will.

  664. It's not even

  665. Easter anymore.

  666. Stop talking

  667. about that stuff.

  668. You can't be serious.

  669. You really believe

  670. that?

  671. And so,

  672. Jesus knows

  673. when you preach,

  674. when you share

  675. your hope,

  676. it's often

  677. rejected,

  678. even ridiculed.

  679. Don't lose heart,

  680. he's saying.

  681. There's hope

  682. even then.

  683. As it turned out,

  684. the ark was the place

  685. of safety,

  686. wasn't it?

  687. when the flood

  688. came,

  689. the eight family

  690. members of Noah

  691. were the ones

  692. who were saved.

  693. And then Peter

  694. says,

  695. while we're

  696. making things

  697. confusing,

  698. let's have some

  699. more fun with

  700. 21st century

  701. Christians.

  702. No,

  703. I don't think

  704. that's what Peter

  705. says.

  706. I think what

  707. Peter says next

  708. is,

  709. while we're

  710. thinking of

  711. people being

  712. saved through

  713. water,

  714. that makes me

  715. think of

  716. your baptism.

  717. It's like that

  718. too.

  719. There's judgment

  720. due to sin,

  721. but if you run

  722. to the ark

  723. of Jesus,

  724. the water,

  725. it will wash

  726. you,

  727. it will cleanse

  728. you,

  729. you'll be saved

  730. in just the same

  731. way like Noah

  732. and his family.

  733. But if you read

  734. verse 21

  735. carefully,

  736. it states,

  737. baptism

  738. now saves

  739. you.

  740. And if you've

  741. been in a church

  742. like this long

  743. enough,

  744. you think,

  745. hold on,

  746. that's not right.

  747. I read verse 18.

  748. I'm saved by

  749. Christ alone.

  750. His death

  751. for sins,

  752. the righteous

  753. for the unrighteous

  754. to bring you

  755. to God.

  756. Now I'm getting

  757. confused again.

  758. Why did we go

  759. past verse 18?

  760. Peter says,

  761. don't be confused.

  762. I'm not talking

  763. of course,

  764. he clarifies for us.

  765. I'm not talking

  766. of the physical

  767. water of baptism

  768. that would wash

  769. dirt off your body,

  770. that that process,

  771. that that ceremony

  772. would actually be

  773. what cleanses

  774. and saves you.

  775. But rather,

  776. the washing

  777. with water

  778. is a sign

  779. of the heart

  780. reality.

  781. You're united

  782. to Christ

  783. and he is

  784. the only one

  785. who saves.

  786. So your appeal

  787. to God

  788. from a good

  789. conscience,

  790. from your faith

  791. in the risen

  792. Jesus,

  793. that's how

  794. you're saved.

  795. Through the

  796. resurrection

  797. of Jesus Christ.

  798. So listen,

  799. your union

  800. with Jesus,

  801. where you're

  802. connected with him,

  803. it's not just

  804. him entering

  805. into your sufferings

  806. and into your

  807. preaching

  808. in a difficult

  809. context.

  810. Christ,

  811. it's about you

  812. entering his

  813. resurrection life.

  814. Romans 6, 5,

  815. if we have been

  816. united with him

  817. in a death

  818. like his,

  819. we will certainly

  820. be united

  821. with him

  822. in a resurrection

  823. like his.

  824. Both of those

  825. are true.

  826. We need that Easter

  827. hope right there,

  828. right?

  829. If you have died

  830. with him

  831. and if you've

  832. experienced those

  833. sufferings

  834. and you're

  835. having yourself

  836. put to death,

  837. you will also

  838. live.

  839. Baptism may be

  840. a bit complex

  841. and how it works

  842. out that it's

  843. a sign pointing

  844. to something else.

  845. Maybe we don't

  846. get all the

  847. nuances right.

  848. Some Christians

  849. who really love

  850. Jesus still get

  851. confused about

  852. exactly how

  853. baptism works

  854. out.

  855. Amen?

  856. Yep.

  857. You know what

  858. we're all clear

  859. on?

  860. It points

  861. to the cleansing

  862. work of Jesus

  863. who lives

  864. so that connected

  865. to him,

  866. we too

  867. never more

  868. will die.

  869. As surely

  870. as Jesus

  871. who endured

  872. even more

  873. suffering than

  874. we have

  875. to the point

  876. of death

  877. on the cross.

  878. As surely

  879. as he is

  880. alive

  881. again,

  882. so you too

  883. who are suffering,

  884. who feel

  885. worldly powers

  886. against you,

  887. who feel like

  888. you're given over

  889. to death

  890. day after day

  891. and you have to

  892. walk back into

  893. this situation

  894. or back into

  895. this relationship

  896. and back into

  897. this struggle,

  898. you can rest

  899. assured that

  900. no matter

  901. what happens

  902. in this life,

  903. you will live

  904. again and

  905. forever.

  906. Here's the point.

  907. Jesus lives

  908. again.

  909. You live

  910. again

  911. forever

  912. with him.

  913. That's what I

  914. think is going

  915. on in that

  916. middle section

  917. and there's

  918. one more thing

  919. that is even

  920. more wonderful

  921. than that.

  922. A glorious

  923. gospel certainty

  924. in this last

  925. verse.

  926. This resurrected

  927. Jesus

  928. has gone

  929. into heaven

  930. and is at

  931. the right hand

  932. of God

  933. with angels,

  934. authorities,

  935. and powers

  936. having been

  937. subjected

  938. to him.

  939. Okay,

  940. now we're

  941. tracking again.

  942. We've been

  943. singing about

  944. this this

  945. morning.

  946. Jesus is not

  947. merely alive,

  948. wondrous

  949. though that is.

  950. He is reigning

  951. over everything,

  952. victorious

  953. over it all.

  954. Now,

  955. this truth,

  956. to be fair,

  957. fits really

  958. well with the

  959. other most likely

  960. understanding of

  961. the previous

  962. verses,

  963. besides the one

  964. I gave you.

  965. That spirits

  966. in prison part

  967. that we read,

  968. a number of

  969. people,

  970. another possible

  971. understanding,

  972. especially if you

  973. like to read this

  974. passage chronologically

  975. and assume

  976. that the preaching

  977. to the spirits

  978. happened in the

  979. days between

  980. Jesus' death

  981. and his

  982. resurrection,

  983. that understanding

  984. would be that

  985. Jesus proclaimed

  986. his victory

  987. to fallen angels,

  988. demons,

  989. spirits,

  990. in prison.

  991. Don't get hung up

  992. on figuring out

  993. which one of us

  994. is right.

  995. You know I'm right.

  996. No,

  997. it doesn't matter

  998. which one of us

  999. got the understanding

  1000. of verse 19

  1001. through 21,

  1002. right?

  1003. Whether verse 19

  1004. paints that

  1005. triumphant picture

  1006. or not,

  1007. verse 22

  1008. makes it really

  1009. clear,

  1010. doesn't it?

  1011. It makes it very

  1012. clear Jesus has

  1013. indeed triumphed,

  1014. he is reigning,

  1015. he is victorious,

  1016. stick with the

  1017. clear part,

  1018. so listen,

  1019. why does that

  1020. matter?

  1021. It matters

  1022. because some of you

  1023. are hurting.

  1024. all of you

  1025. know suffering,

  1026. some of you

  1027. are feeling it

  1028. this morning.

  1029. Some of you

  1030. are feeling

  1031. overwhelmed

  1032. by spiritual

  1033. attack,

  1034. evil spirits,

  1035. hosts of hell

  1036. arrayed against

  1037. you,

  1038. the reality

  1039. of spiritual

  1040. warfare

  1041. and you're

  1042. living in it

  1043. and you can

  1044. have hope,

  1045. you can rest

  1046. assured

  1047. that you

  1048. will share

  1049. Jesus'

  1050. victory.

  1051. Jesus is

  1052. with us

  1053. in our

  1054. suffering,

  1055. right?

  1056. He's there,

  1057. you're not

  1058. alone and

  1059. look where

  1060. he ends up

  1061. having endured

  1062. death,

  1063. he rises

  1064. to new life

  1065. and eternal

  1066. victory at

  1067. the right hand

  1068. of the Father

  1069. over all of

  1070. his and

  1071. our enemies

  1072. forever.

  1073. How does

  1074. that encourage

  1075. me when

  1076. I'm struggling

  1077. when I'm

  1078. losing,

  1079. when I'm

  1080. suffering?

  1081. It tells you

  1082. your hope

  1083. is not

  1084. fanciful,

  1085. it's not

  1086. naive

  1087. optimism,

  1088. it's not

  1089. a selfish

  1090. vanity,

  1091. you haven't

  1092. made this

  1093. up,

  1094. no,

  1095. if you are

  1096. really suffering,

  1097. if you have

  1098. died with

  1099. him,

  1100. you will

  1101. live with

  1102. him,

  1103. if he

  1104. endured

  1105. your

  1106. sufferings

  1107. and now

  1108. reigns

  1109. over all,

  1110. you will

  1111. assuredly

  1112. enjoy

  1113. his

  1114. victory

  1115. with

  1116. him,

  1117. remember

  1118. you're

  1119. connected

  1120. to him,

  1121. if he's

  1122. there,

  1123. you will

  1124. be there

  1125. with him,

  1126. you are

  1127. seated,

  1128. Derek

  1129. read earlier

  1130. to us,

  1131. with Christ

  1132. in the

  1133. heavenly

  1134. places,

  1135. so right

  1136. now even,

  1137. already,

  1138. Christ in

  1139. you,

  1140. is what?

  1141. The hope

  1142. of glory,

  1143. you have

  1144. right now

  1145. living in

  1146. you in

  1147. relationship

  1148. with Jesus,

  1149. the hope

  1150. of glory,

  1151. one day

  1152. forever

  1153. reigning

  1154. victoriously

  1155. with him,

  1156. I've shared

  1157. with you

  1158. before,

  1159. one of my

  1160. favorite images

  1161. of our

  1162. sharing Christ's

  1163. victory because

  1164. we're united

  1165. to him.

  1166. Team Hoyt

  1167. was a

  1168. father-son

  1169. triathlon

  1170. team,

  1171. they together

  1172. completed

  1173. 257

  1174. triathlons

  1175. including

  1176. Ironmans,

  1177. 72

  1178. marathons,

  1179. they're five

  1180. ahead of me,

  1181. Rick,

  1182. I've been

  1183. dreaming lately,

  1184. Rick the

  1185. son

  1186. was born

  1187. with cerebral

  1188. palsy,

  1189. he was

  1190. unable to

  1191. talk or

  1192. to walk

  1193. but his

  1194. dad realized

  1195. how much

  1196. they enjoyed

  1197. being together,

  1198. spending time

  1199. together,

  1200. especially

  1201. outside

  1202. when they

  1203. could run

  1204. so they

  1205. developed some

  1206. specialized

  1207. devices for

  1208. staying connected

  1209. during the

  1210. triathlons,

  1211. Dick biking

  1212. with Rick

  1213. attached to

  1214. him,

  1215. then getting

  1216. off and

  1217. jumping into

  1218. a boat

  1219. where he

  1220. could place

  1221. Rick and

  1222. then swim

  1223. attached to

  1224. him,

  1225. and then

  1226. running

  1227. together

  1228. while pushing

  1229. Rick in a

  1230. specialized

  1231. wheelchair,

  1232. they both

  1233. suffered the

  1234. pain of a

  1235. triathlon,

  1236. bodies hurting

  1237. as the sun

  1238. beat down,

  1239. the wind

  1240. blowing in

  1241. their faces

  1242. as they're

  1243. running or

  1244. biking.

  1245. But my

  1246. favorite images

  1247. are of

  1248. Team Hoyt

  1249. crossing the

  1250. finish line.

  1251. Rick,

  1252. almost always

  1253. in these

  1254. pictures,

  1255. has this

  1256. joy across

  1257. him.

  1258. There's a

  1259. big smile

  1260. often on

  1261. his face.

  1262. His fists

  1263. are always

  1264. pumping in

  1265. the air as

  1266. they cross

  1267. the line.

  1268. He is

  1269. celebrating

  1270. victory,

  1271. and he's

  1272. loving it.

  1273. I think we're

  1274. all pretty

  1275. clear.

  1276. The victory

  1277. was earned

  1278. by Dick,

  1279. suffering the

  1280. pains of the

  1281. race to get

  1282. to that

  1283. victory,

  1284. even more

  1285. than the

  1286. other

  1287. competitors

  1288. out there.

  1289. The victory

  1290. was earned

  1291. by Dick,

  1292. but the

  1293. victory was

  1294. enjoyed by

  1295. Rick, too,

  1296. wasn't it?

  1297. Why?

  1298. How?

  1299. It's the

  1300. only way

  1301. that Rick

  1302. got to

  1303. finish that

  1304. triathlon

  1305. and cross

  1306. the finish

  1307. line with

  1308. that kind

  1309. of victory.

  1310. It was

  1311. only, of

  1312. course,

  1313. because he

  1314. stayed

  1315. connected to

  1316. his father

  1317. the whole

  1318. way.

  1319. A father

  1320. who delighted

  1321. to be with

  1322. him.

  1323. A father

  1324. who found

  1325. a way

  1326. to make

  1327. it happen

  1328. when it

  1329. didn't seem

  1330. possible.

  1331. Listen,

  1332. whatever else

  1333. confuses you

  1334. in this

  1335. passage,

  1336. don't miss

  1337. our hope

  1338. for enjoying

  1339. eternal

  1340. victory.

  1341. It is as

  1342. clear,

  1343. as perspicuous,

  1344. as Rick

  1345. needing to be

  1346. connected to

  1347. his dad to

  1348. finish that

  1349. triathlon.

  1350. Our hope

  1351. in our

  1352. suffering is

  1353. not in our

  1354. own strength.

  1355. It's not in

  1356. our wise

  1357. techniques for

  1358. managing the

  1359. situations.

  1360. It's not even

  1361. in the size

  1362. of our faith

  1363. or our own

  1364. strength of

  1365. our grip on

  1366. God.

  1367. It's not.

  1368. Our hope

  1369. is in the

  1370. victory of

  1371. Jesus,

  1372. who has

  1373. united us

  1374. to himself.

  1375. United himself

  1376. to us in

  1377. this amazing

  1378. relationship

  1379. that can never

  1380. be broken

  1381. because he's

  1382. the one

  1383. that bound

  1384. himself to

  1385. us in

  1386. love,

  1387. enduring our

  1388. sufferings,

  1389. conquering our

  1390. enemies,

  1391. and achieving

  1392. our victory

  1393. to bring us

  1394. to God,

  1395. right?

  1396. That's why he

  1397. did it,

  1398. to bring us

  1399. to God,

  1400. to keep us

  1401. near him,

  1402. connected to

  1403. him.

  1404. And where

  1405. is that?

  1406. Where is he

  1407. that we've been

  1408. brought to with

  1409. him?

  1410. Where's God,

  1411. kids?

  1412. He's in

  1413. heaven.

  1414. That's where it

  1415. says Jesus is.

  1416. He's in heaven

  1417. at the right

  1418. hand of God,

  1419. reigning over

  1420. all powers

  1421. and authorities.

  1422. Think of it.

  1423. If only for

  1424. this life

  1425. we have hope

  1426. in Christ,

  1427. we are to be

  1428. pitied.

  1429. But no,

  1430. that's not it.

  1431. Our hope's not

  1432. just for this

  1433. life.

  1434. There's a

  1435. life to

  1436. come.

  1437. A hope

  1438. that we have

  1439. that is for

  1440. a life

  1441. eternal,

  1442. a hope that's

  1443. not in

  1444. ourselves,

  1445. but is in

  1446. him.

  1447. Listen,

  1448. one day,

  1449. all of those

  1450. warring against

  1451. you right now

  1452. will be

  1453. defeated.

  1454. One day,

  1455. we will

  1456. taunt

  1457. death as

  1458. we talked

  1459. about at

  1460. Easter.

  1461. You can't

  1462. hurt me.

  1463. You can't

  1464. bring me to

  1465. tears with

  1466. your stings.

  1467. You are

  1468. defeated

  1469. forever.

  1470. We'll say

  1471. that one

  1472. day.

  1473. And we

  1474. will reign.

  1475. We will

  1476. be more

  1477. than conquerors,

  1478. right?

  1479. Through him

  1480. who loved

  1481. us.

  1482. Because

  1483. nothing,

  1484. no powers,

  1485. no suffering,

  1486. nothing in

  1487. heaven or

  1488. earth can

  1489. separate you

  1490. from the

  1491. love of God

  1492. in Christ

  1493. Jesus,

  1494. your Lord.

  1495. Oh,

  1496. Jesus,

  1497. that's our

  1498. hope.

  1499. don't let

  1500. our hearts

  1501. waver

  1502. and wander

  1503. to look for

  1504. victory

  1505. anywhere else.

  1506. Just as

  1507. much though,

  1508. Jesus,

  1509. don't let our

  1510. hearts waver

  1511. and wonder

  1512. if we have

  1513. any hope

  1514. anymore.

  1515. our suffering

  1516. can be so

  1517. overwhelming

  1518. at times,

  1519. Lord.

  1520. Our world

  1521. can be so

  1522. disheartening.

  1523. Our weakness

  1524. can be so

  1525. discouraging.

  1526. But greater

  1527. is he that is

  1528. in us.

  1529. Jesus,

  1530. you are in

  1531. us by

  1532. your spirit.

  1533. Praise you.

  1534. so no one

  1535. can keep us

  1536. from God.

  1537. Nothing can

  1538. separate us

  1539. from his

  1540. love.

  1541. Thank you,

  1542. Jesus.

  1543. No one

  1544. can snatch

  1545. us out

  1546. of our

  1547. Father's

  1548. hand.

  1549. May we

  1550. find our

  1551. hope in

  1552. you today

  1553. and forever.

  1554. Amen.

  1555. Amen.
