  1. You are listening to a message from Southwood Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama.

  2. Our passion is to experience and express grace. Join us.

  3. Amen. You are getting me very, very excited.

  4. Right now and for tonight, 10,000 reasons to praise the Lord.

  5. I think we've about hit that number this morning that we've called out.

  6. But I'm going to give us a few more here.

  7. More reasons to come back to worship night.

  8. I hope by the time we're through this morning, you will be so overflowing and eager to come and praise God with us.

  9. Should be a great night.

  10. Can you even imagine coming in here on a Sunday morning and there's no music at all?

  11. No singing the whole service?

  12. Sermons over an hour long?

  13. Wow.

  14. See, I knew y'all would be excited about that.

  15. I can't even imagine that, right?

  16. But thankfully, thankfully God has actually in His Word told us that part of worshiping Him individually and together is to sing His praise.

  17. We've seen lots of other words and emotions that the Psalms direct us to sing.

  18. But we're talking this morning about a hymn of praise.

  19. Maybe you've wondered when in this series will we actually get to the type of Psalm that we all think about first.

  20. Well, today.

  21. Actually, these last five Psalms, not just 147, but 146 through 150, all begin and end with the Hebrew hallelujah.

  22. Which means, praise the Lord.

  23. We say it.

  24. We sing it.

  25. We read it now in God's Word and then we'll talk about why we sing.

  26. Psalm 147.

  27. Praise the Lord.

  28. For it is good to sing praises to our God.

  29. For it is pleasant and a song of praise is fitting.

  30. The Lord builds up Jerusalem.

  31. He gathers the outcasts of Israel.

  32. He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.

  33. He determines the number of the stars.

  34. He gives to all of them their names.

  35. Great is our Lord and abundant in power.

  36. His understanding is beyond measure.

  37. The Lord lifts up the humble.

  38. He casts the wicked to the ground.

  39. Sing to the Lord with thanksgiving.

  40. Make melody to our God on the lyre.

  41. He covers the heavens with clouds.

  42. He prepares rain for the earth.

  43. He makes grass grow on the hills.

  44. He gives to the beasts their food and to the young ravens that cry.

  45. His delight is not in the strength of the horse nor his pleasure in the legs of a man.

  46. But the Lord takes pleasure in those who fear him.

  47. In those who hope in his steadfast love.

  48. Praise the Lord, O Jerusalem.

  49. Praise your God, O Zion.

  50. For he strengthens the bars of your gates.

  51. He blesses your children within you.

  52. He makes peace in your borders.

  53. He fills you with the finest of the wheat.

  54. He sends out his command to the earth.

  55. His word runs swiftly.

  56. He gives snow like wool.

  57. He scatters frost like ashes.

  58. He hurls down his crystals of ice like crumbs.

  59. Who can stand before his cold?

  60. He sends out his word and melts them.

  61. He makes his wind blow and the waters flow.

  62. He declares his word to Jacob.

  63. His statutes and rules to Israel.

  64. He has not dealt thus with any other nation.

  65. They do not know his rules.

  66. Praise the Lord.

  67. Let's pray.

  68. Father, we do praise you.

  69. We gather for that purpose.

  70. And we ask now that you would help our hearts.

  71. Help our very souls at the core of who we are.

  72. To praise you.

  73. Give us eyes to see your glory and worth in a fresh way this morning.

  74. Holy Spirit, show us.

  75. From the word of God, the glory of God.

  76. We ask in his name.

  77. Amen.

  78. Amen.

  79. Why do we sing?

  80. In the car?

  81. In the shower?

  82. Especially perhaps here as we gather together?

  83. Why do we sing?

  84. When I started to answer that question, I did what perhaps many of you would do as well.

  85. I thought first about how singing impacts me.

  86. I guess that self-focus is the air we breathe, isn't it?

  87. If I'm going to do something, what's in it for me?

  88. And we will get to that in just a minute.

  89. But this psalm helpfully reminds us that the primary reason that we sing praise to God

  90. is that he is worthy.

  91. Worthy of all praise.

  92. Look at verse 1.

  93. Praise the Lord.

  94. Hallelujah.

  95. Why?

  96. For it is good.

  97. It's right.

  98. It is pleasant.

  99. It reflects his beauty and glory.

  100. And a song of praise is fitting.

  101. In other words, whether it has any positive effects on us or not,

  102. praising God is always appropriate, deserved, and right.

  103. You know, the idea of worship means ascribing worth to someone or something.

  104. Many people are worthy of being celebrated, even in song.

  105. Our hearts often express worth in song, don't they?

  106. When you go to a party for someone, you sing happy birthday to you, to them.

  107. If you are deemed especially worthy of someone's affections, he may write you a love song or poem.

  108. That seems fitting.

  109. What is always fitting for our God, Yahweh, the faithful, personal, covenant-keeping, one true God of the Bible,

  110. is songs of praise.

  111. No matter what is going on in our lives or in our world,

  112. God is always and uniquely worthy of praise.

  113. He is worthy of praise for no other reason even than who he is.

  114. If you read through the Psalms alone, when they call us to praise God,

  115. they also tell us what he's like to inspire our praise.

  116. I just want you to marvel for a few minutes this morning at some of these descriptions of God.

  117. I'm going to go through quite a few aspects of God's great character for which we are told to praise him.

  118. Just in the Psalms alone, I'm not even going to go beyond that.

  119. We'd be here all day.

  120. Every one of these would be worthy of all the praise we could give.

  121. I just want you to ponder them as I read through some of them.

  122. Close your eyes if you like.

  123. He is great and greatly to be praised.

  124. Yes, he's the mighty one in total control who deserves not just a small compliment,

  125. but all the praise we can muster.

  126. In fact, he has been king of all the earth from everlasting.

  127. There is nothing in this universe.

  128. He has ever been unaware of or out of control of.

  129. He has always been and always will be in charge.

  130. God is robed in majesty, clothed in light,

  131. so amazingly bright that we can't look upon his glory, right?

  132. Splendid in his holiness.

  133. It's radiating out from the glorious light.

  134. He's utterly unlike anyone or anything else.

  135. And he's good to all.

  136. He is the essence of goodness.

  137. Good is good because it's like him.

  138. As the one in charge, we're told to praise him as the righteous judge.

  139. To the point we praise him that justice and righteousness are the foundation of his throne.

  140. You can absolutely count on his doing what is right.

  141. Whether you can see it or not, in the grand scheme, from his throne over the whole universe,

  142. outside of time, he judges justly.

  143. And yet, he's slow to anger.

  144. Oh, yes.

  145. Praise the Lord, right?

  146. If he was eager to pour out his just wrath, to let off some steam,

  147. we wouldn't stand a chance.

  148. But he's patient.

  149. His very nature is forgiving.

  150. Yes, an answer to all of our sins.

  151. In fact, the Psalms repeatedly praise God for his steadfast love.

  152. They say the earth is full of it and it's better than life itself.

  153. Praise him that he keeps his promises to love, to provide.

  154. His very nature is love you can count on never to let you down and never to let you go.

  155. It's abounding, rushing out from his deepest heart,

  156. out through every pore of his being, steadfast love.

  157. So that he is abundant in mercy.

  158. Praise him.

  159. His mercy is more than our sins.

  160. It stretches to reach us when we're far off.

  161. It keeps coming when we're at our weakest, when we're at our worst.

  162. There's more mercy.

  163. And as a result, he's a stronghold for the oppressed.

  164. As amazingly great and awesome as he is,

  165. he is always a safe place to run.

  166. Whenever life hurts, we can run to him.

  167. His love never fails.

  168. So the psalmist praises Yahweh as his rock,

  169. his fortress, his deliverer, his shield.

  170. This God is utterly reliable.

  171. He's constantly protecting us, powerfully fighting for us.

  172. Nothing and no one can change his great character.

  173. In fact, as great as he is, praise him that he is faithful to all generations.

  174. All these glorious attributes of his character have been true since eternity past.

  175. They've shown up in relationship with his people for thousands and thousands of years.

  176. And they will never, ever change or diminish or stop.

  177. Praise the Lord, right?

  178. Praise the Lord.

  179. Isn't someone like that worthy of our songs of praise?

  180. Praise the Lord.

  181. And we haven't even gotten to all the things this glorious God has done.

  182. I get to keep going.

  183. His great deeds demonstrate his great character.

  184. Just a few.

  185. Consider his power and creativity in creation from this psalm.

  186. He determines the number of the stars.

  187. He gives to all of them their names.

  188. He covers the heavens with clouds.

  189. He prepares rain for the earth.

  190. Verse 16.

  191. He gives snow like wool.

  192. He scatters frost like ashes.

  193. He hurls down his crystals of ice like crumbs.

  194. Who can stand before his cold?

  195. And he sends out his word and melts them.

  196. He makes his wind blow and the waters flow.

  197. This is like Elsa like you can't imagine.

  198. It's beyond spinning out the ice.

  199. And then all he has to do is blow and it melts away.

  200. We can't even comprehend the number of stars in our galaxy.

  201. And he names the stars in all the galaxies and holds them in his hand.

  202. All of them.

  203. The universe at times humbles me.

  204. I hope it does you.

  205. Just knocks me to my knees at the powerful winds of a storm.

  206. The loud clash of thunder.

  207. The glorious majesty of the mountains.

  208. How about the sunrise at the beach?

  209. And y'all he powerfully spoke all of those into existence.

  210. How great and majestic and beautiful must he be?

  211. Consider his gracious acts of redemption.

  212. Verse 2.

  213. The Lord builds up Jerusalem.

  214. He gathers the outcasts of Israel.

  215. He heals the broken hearted and binds up their wounds.

  216. The Lord lifts up the humble.

  217. Can he even begin to imagine all of the grace and love and forgiveness and mercy

  218. he has shown through generation after generation.

  219. He remembers his covenant forever.

  220. When he leads his people through the Red Sea, they sing songs of praise.

  221. When he sends his son to the cross, immediately hymns of praise are written

  222. and we're still singing them and we're writing more of them.

  223. Other psalms praise him for raising the poor from the dust.

  224. Lifting the needy from the ash heap.

  225. Giving the barren woman a home.

  226. Oh, how he loves.

  227. Do you hear it over and over?

  228. Consider here his incredible deeds to sustain day by day.

  229. Verse 9.

  230. He gives to the beasts their food, to the young ravens that cry.

  231. Verse 13.

  232. He strengthens the bars of your gates.

  233. He blesses your children within you.

  234. He makes peace in your borders.

  235. He fills you with the finest of the wheat.

  236. He sends out his command to the earth.

  237. His word runs swiftly.

  238. Elsewhere, he gives food to the hungry.

  239. He watches over the sojourners.

  240. He upholds the widow and the fatherless.

  241. He upholds all who are falling and raises all who are bowed down.

  242. He satisfies the desire of every living thing.

  243. Y'all, that's a lot of people held in his heart

  244. and in his hand day by day.

  245. Isn't it?

  246. That is a tremendous creation being sustained by the word of his power.

  247. So, so many reasons to praise God for what he has done.

  248. And the psalm tells us these deeds are so great that we must sing.

  249. When I cry out and God delivers me from the mire.

  250. He sets my feet on a rock.

  251. Right?

  252. And what else?

  253. And he puts a new song in my mouth.

  254. It's a song of praise to our God.

  255. In fact, so many reasons for praise that people don't seem to be enough.

  256. The psalms depict singing trees, singing hills, singing mountains,

  257. and rivers clapping their hands.

  258. I don't even know rivers had hands.

  259. But they're clapping them in praise of God because he is great

  260. and greatly to be praised and all creation joins in.

  261. You remember when people were singing praise to him

  262. and others told Jesus, tell him to stop praising you.

  263. What did Jesus say?

  264. If they stop singing praise to me,

  265. these very stones will cry out.

  266. Friends, we better be singing his praises

  267. because if we leave it to the stones,

  268. you know that the tunes will all be rock and roll.

  269. And that, yes, that was as good as I thought it was going to be.

  270. Amen.

  271. Don't, I said that just so you'll remember.

  272. Don't leave it to the stones.

  273. It is our job to praise him.

  274. And all of creation joins in.

  275. If you're not convinced to sing praise to God by the direction of the psalms,

  276. one last reality to reflect on this morning.

  277. My dad taught me that music is the language of heaven.

  278. Yes, God tells us to sing praise to him.

  279. And when we get a glimpse of what's happening in the throne room of heaven,

  280. if you could pull back and peek around the corner right now this morning

  281. into the throne room of heaven,

  282. how do all of those there who are perfect,

  283. how do they respond in the presence of our glorious God?

  284. The chorus begins with four living creatures

  285. who day and night sing,

  286. holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty

  287. who was and is and is to come.

  288. And 24 elders worship,

  289. saying, worthy are you, our Lord and God,

  290. to receive glory and honor and power.

  291. For you created all things,

  292. and by your will they existed and were created.

  293. And when they look up and see the Lamb,

  294. together they sing more of his worth.

  295. Worthy are you to take the scroll

  296. and to open its seals,

  297. for you were slain,

  298. and by your blood you ransomed people for God

  299. from every tribe and language and people and nation.

  300. And this chorus builds as they're joined by myriads

  301. and myriads of angels singing loudly,

  302. worthy is the Lamb who was slain

  303. to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might

  304. and honor and glory and blessing.

  305. And taking up the cue from myriads of angels

  306. are every creature in heaven and earth

  307. and under the earth and in the sea

  308. singing to him who sits on the throne

  309. and to the Lamb be blessing and honor

  310. and glory and might forever and ever.

  311. And finally, as this great crescendo builds,

  312. a voice of a great multitude,

  313. like the roar of many waters

  314. and the sound of mighty peals of thunder

  315. crying out, hallelujah,

  316. salvation and glory and power belongs to our God,

  317. for his judgments are true and just.

  318. Hallelujah for the Lord our God,

  319. the Almighty reigns.

  320. Let us rejoice and exalt and give him the glory.

  321. Heaven agrees.

  322. There's nothing more fitting,

  323. more pleasant,

  324. more good

  325. than singing praise

  326. to the God who is greatly to be praised.

  327. He is worthy.

  328. He is worthy.

  329. Amen?

  330. But we're living

  331. in the midst of a crisis

  332. of worth and worship.

  333. Let me tell you what I would say to describe that.

  334. Imagine, if you will,

  335. that thieves break into Target overnight.

  336. Overnight.

  337. Okay?

  338. It's a big heist.

  339. Okay?

  340. They disable the alarms.

  341. They stay in the store undetected for several hours.

  342. And they leave and take absolutely nothing with them.

  343. Instead, what they do is they run around all over the store

  344. swapping price tags and barcodes on different items.

  345. They do that all night.

  346. They swap things all over the store.

  347. So tomorrow morning,

  348. when you go in to Target,

  349. what happens before anyone notices

  350. is that a new flat screen smart TV is $5

  351. and a new pair of socks is $500.

  352. A package of filet mignon steaks is $1

  353. and a pack of gum is $50.

  354. The Star Wars Superstar Destroyer Lego set,

  355. bigger than you can fit in the trunk of your car,

  356. is $10.

  357. And the tiny little box of baby Legos, $1,800.

  358. What?

  359. The thieves are making out great.

  360. How many TVs would you buy at $5?

  361. And all they had to do

  362. was swap some price tags and barcodes,

  363. change what things were worth,

  364. and they'd do a lot of damage, right?

  365. Our culture has told us

  366. that we can determine what's valuable,

  367. what's worthy.

  368. We can do that for ourselves.

  369. Everybody can.

  370. In a sense,

  371. we've all been allowed in

  372. to swap price tags

  373. with the impression

  374. that it won't hurt anyone.

  375. What's really worthy?

  376. A good friend who is there for you

  377. over the long haul?

  378. Or fitting in with the in crowd?

  379. Impressive personal experiences

  380. or enriching the lives of others?

  381. Loving parents

  382. or people who make you feel cool and comfortable?

  383. What's really worthy?

  384. The God of the universe?

  385. Knowing Him?

  386. Walking with Him?

  387. Praising Him forever and ever?

  388. Or being who you want to be?

  389. Doing what makes you feel good?

  390. Ringing everything you can out of life

  391. in this world every day you get.

  392. That's a crisis, I say.

  393. Because if we're not clear on what's worthy,

  394. how in the world do you live a life

  395. with any sort of purpose

  396. for what's really worthwhile?

  397. How would you know what's worth living your life for each day?

  398. In this world where people have switched values up,

  399. the values of God's kingdom seem upside down,

  400. and we often struggle to discern for ourselves

  401. what's really worthy, don't we?

  402. Quite often, our lives and our lips

  403. don't praise the God who is most worthy.

  404. Our hearts need help.

  405. We sing to help our hearts

  406. as well as to honor our God.

  407. C.S. Lewis, in his Abolition of Man,

  408. writes about what he calls men without chests,

  409. people, all of us who need emotions

  410. organized by trained habit into stable sentiments.

  411. What he means, I dare say,

  412. is we need hearts that value correctly,

  413. that see price tags put back on the correct items,

  414. that recognize what is really worthy.

  415. We desperately need hearts like that.

  416. That's what it would mean to love God

  417. with our whole hearts, right?

  418. Lewis, agreeing with Aristotle, writes,

  419. the transition from thinking to doing

  420. in nearly all men at all moments

  421. needs to be assisted by the appropriate states of feeling.

  422. If we're going to invest our lives

  423. in worthwhile pursuits,

  424. if we're going to spend our energies

  425. on the truly valuable,

  426. if we're going to sing to the truly praiseworthy,

  427. our hearts, our deepest affections,

  428. our deepest affections must be set right.

  429. Find what is lovely and excellent and praiseworthy

  430. and think about such things.

  431. This sets our minds right,

  432. Philippians 4 says.

  433. If we sing about such things,

  434. we help set our hearts right.

  435. So we sing praise to God,

  436. not only because He is worthy,

  437. and He is,

  438. but also to direct our hearts

  439. towards God's worth,

  440. to draw them back from the worthless idols

  441. that they tend to chase after.

  442. What things do we sing about?

  443. We sing about bodies looking good.

  444. We sing about unrestrained violence

  445. and self-indulgence.

  446. We sing about football and touchdowns.

  447. We sing about all of those things.

  448. And sometimes, because we do,

  449. we begin to think

  450. that those things are more worthy

  451. of our heart's affections

  452. than the incomparable God

  453. that we've been talking about

  454. from His Word this morning.

  455. Henry Scugel wrote centuries ago,

  456. the worth and excellency of a soul

  457. is to be measured

  458. by the object of His love.

  459. How do you know

  460. whether you truly are

  461. at your innermost person?

  462. Who that is,

  463. is excellent and on track?

  464. How do you know?

  465. What do you love?

  466. Do you see the most worthy

  467. as the most worthy?

  468. That will set the course of your life.

  469. That's why we sing,

  470. I'd rather have Jesus

  471. than silver or gold,

  472. houses or lands,

  473. worldwide fame,

  474. men's applause,

  475. anything this world affords today.

  476. That may not be always

  477. the emotion of my heart

  478. when I stand before

  479. a tempting decision,

  480. but I'm singing

  481. to shape my heart that way.

  482. I may feel like

  483. much of my life

  484. is lived for me,

  485. for my goals,

  486. my comfort,

  487. my success,

  488. but I sing

  489. all for Jesus,

  490. all for Jesus,

  491. all my thoughts

  492. and words and doings,

  493. all my days

  494. and all my hours

  495. because I want

  496. more and more

  497. to live for Him

  498. because it helps me remember

  499. when I don't want

  500. to enter into conversation,

  501. it's not convenient

  502. to talk to one of those

  503. three people

  504. that I'm praying for this year

  505. like you are,

  506. that I want them

  507. to come to know Jesus.

  508. it reminds me

  509. that I'm here for Him,

  510. not for my schedule

  511. and agenda.

  512. Y'all,

  513. I struggle

  514. to start those conversations,

  515. but by God's grace,

  516. it's happening.

  517. Some,

  518. it's starting.

  519. If my affections are right,

  520. they help my actions.

  521. What is the object

  522. of my soul's love?

  523. God tells us

  524. to train our hearts

  525. with our songs,

  526. to do that

  527. for one another.

  528. Ephesians chapter 5,

    Ephesians 5 chapter mention

  529. addressing one another

  530. in psalms

  531. and hymns

  532. and spiritual songs,

  533. singing and making melody

  534. to the Lord

  535. with your heart.

  536. In Colossians chapter 3,

    Colossians 3 chapter mention

  537. it's a similar idea.

  538. The word of Christ

  539. is going to dwell

  540. in you richly

  541. as you teach

  542. and admonish one another

  543. in all wisdom,

  544. singing psalms

  545. and hymns

  546. and spiritual songs.

  547. Yes,

  548. we sing first

  549. and primarily

  550. to God,

  551. but God directs us also

  552. to sing to one another

  553. to call our hearts back

  554. to what is truly worthy

  555. because our hearts

  556. are prone to wander,

  557. yes?

  558. Because our hearts

  559. need to be tuned

  560. in order to sing

  561. God's grace.

  562. Notice how this psalm

  563. briefly turns its attention

  564. not merely

  565. to praising God,

  566. but at the same time

  567. to the emotions

  568. of our hearts.

  569. Verse 7,

  570. sing to the Lord

  571. with thanksgiving.

  572. Not just what to do outwardly,

  573. what's happening in here,

  574. thanksgiving.

  575. What an appropriate emotion,

  576. right?

  577. In light of all

  578. that God has done for us,

  579. for the gracious gift

  580. of relationship with Him,

  581. eternal salvation,

  582. we sing,

  583. thank you,

  584. Jesus for the blood.

  585. For His daily provision

  586. and His faithful care,

  587. we sing,

  588. great is Thy faithfulness,

  589. O God my Father.

  590. Then verse 11,

  591. as we sing,

  592. we realize God's delight

  593. is in those who fear Him.

  594. We grow in appropriate awe

  595. of Him

  596. as majestic creator

  597. and sovereign king

  598. and gracious redeemer.

  599. how great thou art.

  600. Doesn't singing that

  601. help your heart

  602. in ways that listening

  603. to me talk doesn't?

  604. Doesn't it move you

  605. in a different way?

  606. Doesn't it touch

  607. something different in you?

  608. God gives His people

  609. songs to sing

  610. to that end

  611. because He cares

  612. about our hearts.

  613. Finally,

  614. our hope.

  615. Friends,

  616. we hope in a lot of things,

  617. don't we?

  618. Can we be honest

  619. about that for a minute?

  620. They include

  621. our own strengths

  622. and abilities.

  623. Verse 10 warns about that.

  624. Our own experiences

  625. and pleasures,

  626. our own possessions

  627. and comforts.

  628. But we need

  629. our hearts

  630. to hope

  631. in one place.

  632. In God

  633. and His steadfast love

  634. that endures

  635. forever.

  636. That's really hard,

  637. isn't it?

  638. Moment by moment

  639. to have your hope

  640. set there.

  641. And so we sing

  642. of the day

  643. when our faith

  644. is made sight

  645. and the clouds

  646. are rolled back

  647. as a scroll

  648. and the trump

  649. resounds

  650. and the Lord

  651. descends

  652. and it is well

  653. with my soul.

  654. I am bound

  655. bound for the promised land

  656. where we will feast

  657. in the house

  658. of Zion.

  659. We will sing

  660. with our hearts

  661. restored.

  662. And we call our hearts

  663. as we do.

  664. We shape our hearts

  665. as we sing those songs

  666. to hope

  667. there

  668. and in Him

  669. rather than hoping

  670. and feeling

  671. better now

  672. or finding fulfillment

  673. fulfillment here.

  674. No, it's in Jesus.

  675. I remember talking

  676. with Delilah Harris.

  677. Some of you know her.

  678. Precious

  679. early Southwood member

  680. who was widowed

  681. for many years

  682. before just a few years ago

  683. herself

  684. going home

  685. to be with Jesus.

  686. I remember a conversation

  687. where she said

  688. how much she struggled

  689. with loneliness.

  690. We talked about

  691. how she battled that

  692. and maintained

  693. this hope in God

  694. that she seemed to have.

  695. She prayed so much.

  696. She said for her

  697. if she could only

  698. sing an old hymn

  699. when she didn't

  700. feel like it

  701. it would remind her

  702. of who God was

  703. and that

  704. and that He was

  705. really there

  706. with her

  707. that He really

  708. loved her

  709. and that

  710. all the time

  711. as the song

  712. she loved went

  713. He was walking

  714. and talking

  715. with her

  716. and I can still

  717. hear her saying

  718. that's true

  719. that is true

  720. He will do it.

  721. some of you

  722. have told me

  723. you struggle

  724. to sing

  725. when you're

  726. really hurting

  727. a couple of our

  728. older members

  729. have told me

  730. that's part of why

  731. they love being

  732. here

  733. so much

  734. with God's people

  735. to worship

  736. they don't like

  737. to hear their own

  738. voice

  739. singing alone

  740. perhaps off pitch

  741. but you come

  742. here

  743. and others

  744. can sing

  745. with you

  746. even for you

  747. when you can't

  748. you come here

  749. and the amen

  750. the hallelujah

  751. sounds

  752. from God's

  753. people

  754. again

  755. and helps

  756. your heart

  757. point

  758. again

  759. to true north

  760. the God

  761. who is worthy

  762. who is great

  763. and greatly

  764. to be praised

  765. Father

  766. we bow

  767. before you

  768. in worship

  769. we praise you

  770. because you are

  771. greater than our

  772. minds can comprehend

  773. this morning

  774. you're here with us

  775. inhabiting the praises

  776. of your people

  777. you're with brothers

  778. and sisters

  779. of ours

  780. who are not here

  781. this morning

  782. and are broken

  783. hearted

  784. and you're meeting

  785. them there

  786. how great you are

  787. how awesome

  788. is your name

  789. forgive us

  790. for forgetting

  791. put a new song

  792. in our mouth

  793. a hymn of praise

  794. to our God

  795. may we not merely

  796. sing it this morning

  797. may we not

  798. merely gather

  799. and sing it

  800. tonight

  801. give us

  802. hearts

  803. to sing

  804. moment by moment

  805. in our lowest

  806. and darkest places

  807. from the mountaintops

  808. your praise

  809. we worship you

  810. Lord Jesus

  811. and pray in your name

  812. amen
