  1. You are listening to a message from Southwood Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama.

  2. Our passion is to experience and express grace. Join us.

  3. Kids, we're going to start the sermon by inviting you up here.

  4. Isn't that what you always wanted to do? Come up here during the sermon?

  5. Come up here and we're going to talk on the steps for just a minute before some of you leave us.

  6. We'll talk right over here.

  7. Anybody who thinks you're a kid, you know.

  8. All right. Do any of y'all like gifts?

  9. Do you like presents?

  10. Can I tell you something about this one?

  11. It's empty. It's not a real present, okay?

  12. I want to get that out of the way early before I disappoint you.

  13. There's nothing inside, okay?

  14. But I brought it because I really like presents too.

  15. And we get presents at different times.

  16. We've had multiple birthdays at my house this week.

  17. Does anybody like having birthdays?

  18. Yes.

  19. Do you sometimes get presents on your birthdays?

  20. Yes.

  21. My birthday.

  22. Yes.

  23. Sometimes the gifts that we really, really want are ones that we don't have enough money to buy.

  24. Have you ever had that?

  25. There's something you really want, but you can't get it for yourself?

  26. We had someone turn 16 in our house this week.

  27. And I don't think she had enough money to buy a car.

  28. Unfortunately, neither did her parents.

  29. But when our kids were younger, they used to say things like,

  30. Dad, will you buy me Disney?

  31. Now, does any of you have enough money to buy Disney?

  32. Yes.

  33. I don't think so.

  34. Buy me Disney?

  35. I was like, oh, man.

  36. But they really wanted to go to Disney World, right?

  37. Sometimes there's something that you really want that you don't have enough money to get.

  38. And your parents love you so much that they're able to give you a gift like that, right?

  39. Something that you wanted that you couldn't give for yourself.

  40. There's a verse that we're going to talk about in the sermon this morning that I think some of y'all have heard.

  41. It talks about God giving us a gift that we can't get for ourselves.

  42. Does anybody know John 3, 16?

  43. Have you heard of that?

  44. Can any of y'all help me figure out how it goes?

  45. God so loved the world that he gave us his only son so that whoever believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.

  46. Very good.

  47. Each of us got parts of that, right?

  48. God so loved the world that he gave his only son that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

  49. God, can you give yourself life?

  50. Did you give yourself life when you were born the first time?

  51. No, you weren't in charge of that.

  52. Can you give yourself life?

  53. No.

  54. But what does God do?

  55. God gives us Jesus.

  56. That's right.

  57. God gives us Jesus, his son, so that we can have life.

  58. Life with him.

  59. Life forever.

  60. Forever.

  61. Did you know God loves you that much?

  62. Kind of like sometimes your parents give you a picture of that in their love for you.

  63. He loves you so much that he gives his son for you.

  64. I want you, some of y'all are about to leave, I know.

  65. But those of you who stay in here, I want you to listen to the sermon.

  66. I especially want you to watch when we celebrate the Lord's Supper.

  67. Maybe you'll come up with your family as we celebrate the Lord's Supper.

  68. And remember, as you do, how much God loves you and the gift that God gave you through his son of life with him forever.

  69. Okay?

  70. Can we pray about that before you go back?

  71. God, thank you for that great gift.

  72. Thank you that you love us so much.

  73. I pray that these kids would know that love.

  74. That they'd experience that from others and their families and this church family.

  75. That they would know today that they can live with you forever.

  76. For the rest of their lives here and through eternity.

  77. We thank you for that great gift.

  78. In Jesus' name, amen.

  79. Amen.

  80. All right, those of you in kindergarten and first grade, if you go right out that back door,

  81. Miss Beth will be back there to meet you for kids' worship.

  82. And the rest of you can go back to where you were sitting.

  83. Thank you all for coming up here.

  84. Perhaps you've heard that verse before.

  85. It's a great verse.

  86. We're going to cover 21 verses this morning.

  87. Maybe you've forgotten.

  88. You've heard it so many times you forgot the context that we find it in.

  89. The context of John 3.16 is a conversation between Jesus and a man named Nicodemus.

  90. Nicodemus is a religious leader in Jerusalem.

  91. Perhaps the foremost Jewish theologian of his day.

  92. And he comes to this new on the scene teacher with some questions.

  93. He's wrestling with who Jesus is.

  94. And what the implications of that would be for his life.

  95. And so he comes to Jesus.

  96. Before we start reading this story, let me just say, that's such a great idea.

  97. Maybe you have questions of your own.

  98. Things that you're uncertain about in life.

  99. Confusion surrounding who Jesus is and what that will mean.

  100. Jesus welcomes those questions.

  101. What better place to go with questions like that than to him.

  102. Virtually everyone agrees that Jesus is one of, if not the single most influential person in world history.

  103. So figuring out what you think about him is so important.

  104. This morning we get to listen in on his conversation with Nicodemus and see what we learn.

  105. Okay.

  106. First, John sets the stage.

  107. Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews.

  108. This man came to Jesus by night and said to him,

  109. Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God for no one can do these signs that you do unless God is with him.

  110. Nicodemus has seen or heard some things about Jesus.

  111. Maybe reports of turning water into wine at the wedding, right?

  112. Surely he's heard about the authority with which Jesus just cleansed the temple.

  113. Perhaps other powerful words or deeds that Jesus has been doing.

  114. But Jesus has attracted the attention of this really impressive, very religious leader.

  115. Nicodemus is intrigued by all that's going on.

  116. He's excited because he sees signs of God's kingdom.

  117. Display of God's power.

  118. Nicodemus knows about this.

  119. He's looked forward to this and he's not even asking something specific yet.

  120. He just wants to hear Jesus' take on all this.

  121. How's all this kingdom signs and power fit together?

  122. I think many of us are like Nicodemus, growing up around the things of God,

  123. learning about the Bible, being taught to live according to God's law.

  124. What's on his heart as he comes to Jesus will likely represent us well.

  125. And if you're not so religious by background, stick with the conversation because we're about to see that that's maybe not so important as we might think.

  126. Or as Nicodemus might have imagined.

  127. Because no matter our backgrounds, we're all wondering the same types of things like Nicodemus.

  128. Where do I find life?

  129. How can I fix what's wrong with me?

  130. Where can I have real solid hope?

  131. Something I can count on.

  132. Those are the kinds of issues that would be on his heart as he explores the signs of God's kingdom that he's seeing.

  133. What does Jesus say to him?

  134. Jesus answered him,

  135. Nicodemus, you won't even see the kingdom.

  136. You won't recognize it clearly unless you are born again.

  137. It is hard to describe how shocking this would have been to a leader like Nicodemus.

  138. He would have assumed that being born a Jew, being born into Abraham's family, that he was in the kingdom of God.

  139. Unless he did something really bad to mess that up.

  140. What do you mean be born again?

  141. Nicodemus said to him,

  142. How can a man be born when he's old?

  143. Can he enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born?

  144. Now Jesus is going to explain again.

  145. I love that he speaks Nicodemus' language here.

  146. For the first of two times, he's going to cite the Old Testament that Nicodemus knows so well.

  147. Jesus answered,

  148. Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.

  149. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is Spirit.

  150. Do not marvel that I said to you, you must be born again.

  151. The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes.

  152. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.

  153. You must be born again, Jesus says.

  154. Three times now he has made the necessity of new birth clear.

  155. And that's for everyone, by the way, not just Nicodemus specifically.

  156. The you is plural.

  157. Y'all must be born again.

  158. New birth is essential, even for the most religious.

  159. We're all on the same level here, right?

  160. No matter what our backgrounds are.

  161. We need a complete restart.

  162. We need everything to be new.

  163. Not merely a small adjustment to your approach to things.

  164. Not a little additional knowledge to perfect that which you've really known all your life,

  165. and you're already pretty good at.

  166. No, no.

  167. A new birth.

  168. A new birth from above.

  169. That's another translation of the same word for again.

  170. You may see a note in your Bible to that effect.

  171. Born again from above.

  172. Remember in John's prologue, the first chapter, he said those who received Jesus,

  173. who believed in him, could become children of God.

  174. How?

  175. How would they be born into that family?

  176. Not of blood.

  177. Not of the will of the flesh.

  178. Not of the will of man.

  179. But born of God.

  180. Here's the rub, right?

  181. You must be born again.

  182. Necessity.

  183. But you can't.

  184. Impossibility.

  185. Just as you couldn't make your birth happen the first time,

  186. just as Nicodemus realizes you can't do it again physically,

  187. you can't give yourself new birth.

  188. Jesus is quite clear.

  189. The thing you most need is something you can't give yourself.

  190. See, new birth is not something you do,

  191. like obey a little bit more,

  192. or be a little more theologically precise.

  193. No, it's not like that.

  194. It's something you receive.

  195. That's what Jesus means when he equates being born again

  196. with born of water and the Spirit.

  197. That's one thing, by the way, one birth.

  198. He's sending Nicodemus back to the prophets

  199. to show him that this birth from God

  200. has always been the hope of God's people.

  201. Listen to the prophet Ezekiel

  202. when he tells God's people about their future hope,

  203. the new covenant to redeem them,

  204. to return them from the nations they've been scattered to,

  205. to restore them to relationship with God.

  206. He writes this in chapter 36,

  207. I will sprinkle clean water on you

  208. and you shall be clean from all your uncleannesses.

  209. From all your idols, I will cleanse you

  210. and I will give you a new heart,

  211. a new spirit I will put within you.

  212. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh

  213. and give you a heart of flesh.

  214. And I will put my spirit within you

  215. and cause you to walk in my statutes

  216. and be careful to obey my rules.

  217. You shall dwell in the land that I gave to your fathers

  218. and you shall be my people

  219. and I will be your God.

  220. What a glorious, glorious picture.

  221. What a great promise from God, right?

  222. This is what he is going to do.

  223. Cleansed with water.

  224. Filled with the spirit.

  225. Who gives life by the water and the spirit?

  226. God says, I will.

  227. I will.

  228. I will.

  229. I will.

  230. In fact, as Ezekiel keeps talking,

  231. he gives God's people a picture of a valley of dry bones.

  232. It's in chapter 37, the next chapter.

  233. A huge pile of bones, just dead and dry like Israel.

  234. But thus says the Lord to these dry bones,

  235. I will cause breath to enter you and you shall live.

  236. And God sends the spirit, the breath,

  237. the bones come to life like a great army.

  238. And verse 14,

  239. I will put my spirit within you and you shall live.

  240. And I will place you in your own land.

  241. Then you shall know that I am the Lord.

  242. I have spoken and I will do it, declares the Lord.

  243. Do you hear what God's saying?

  244. God is saying to his people then,

  245. and Jesus is reiterating to his people in Nicodemus' day,

  246. I give life by water and the spirit.

  247. That's how you first came to be

  248. when I breathed life into you,

  249. the breath of life.

  250. And you became a living being

  251. and that's how you become part of my kingdom.

  252. You need cleansing and a new heart

  253. and relationship where I dwell with you.

  254. So even though you can't explain it,

  255. even though you may not know it's happening,

  256. the spirit will blow like the wind

  257. and you'll see and you'll feel life,

  258. completely new and different,

  259. born of God, born from above.

  260. That's, by the way, all Christians, right?

  261. Born again.

  262. Jesus says that's all Christians,

  263. not some political interest group,

  264. not just the especially zealous kind of weird,

  265. fringe Christians who are really radical.

  266. No, no, no.

  267. All Christians must be born again.

  268. But of course they can't themselves.

  269. Now maybe you hear that

  270. and you think that new birth is such good news.

  271. It is.

  272. New life from God, right?

  273. But maybe if you're honest,

  274. you're still kind of confused.

  275. You're like Nicodemus.

  276. You're like me.

  277. You've been around church.

  278. You've lived there.

  279. You've been around people talking about God

  280. and calling themselves Christians.

  281. And so being a Christian

  282. is just what you thought you were

  283. because you were born that way

  284. and you never decided to change.

  285. So this impossible necessity

  286. could be pretty confusing

  287. or even discouraging.

  288. Am I born again?

  289. Can I be?

  290. How?

  291. I mean, I'm in church all the time,

  292. but I don't know what to do.

  293. Nicodemus understands.

  294. He's hearing the concept too,

  295. but he still wants to know how.

  296. How, verse nine, Nicodemus says to Jesus,

  297. how can these things be?

  298. How's that happen?

  299. What Jesus is about to do

  300. in the next few verses

  301. is he's going to open up

  302. the wonder of heaven,

  303. the glory of God's amazing love,

  304. the beauty of the heart of God

  305. to help Nicodemus understand

  306. something very simple.

  307. that because you can't give yourself

  308. what you most need,

  309. God gives you that gift.

  310. It is necessarily simple.

  311. Verse 10, Jesus answered him,

  312. are you the teacher of Israel

  313. and yet you do not understand these things?

  314. Connect the dots, Nicodemus.

  315. Truly, truly, I say to you,

  316. we speak of what we know

  317. and bear witness to what we have seen,

  318. but you do not receive our testimony.

  319. If I have told you earthly things

  320. and you do not believe,

  321. how can you believe

  322. if I tell you heavenly things?

  323. Here they come.

  324. Heavenly things.

  325. It's going to get even more glorious.

  326. Verse 13,

  327. no one has ascended into heaven

  328. except him who descended from heaven,

  329. the son of man.

  330. That new birth, Nicodemus,

  331. it comes from above

  332. and because you must have it

  333. and you couldn't find your way to heaven,

  334. to God,

  335. God himself has come to you.

  336. Uniquely in Jesus,

  337. the son of man,

  338. that's what he calls himself,

  339. heaven comes to you, Nicodemus.

  340. That's what's going on.

  341. This is what you need to grasp, Nicodemus,

  342. if you're still confused.

  343. I'm going to give you

  344. one more Old Testament example,

  345. Jesus says,

  346. Numbers chapter 21.

    Numbers 21 chapter mention

  347. God's people have gotten impatient

  348. in the wilderness.

  349. They're complaining, right?

  350. They're complaining about the food.

  351. They're complaining about Moses.

  352. They're complaining about God.

  353. Not good.

  354. And God sends serpents

  355. serpents to bite them

  356. and they begin to die.

  357. Moses prays to God

  358. on behalf of the people

  359. and the Lord responds,

  360. verse 8,

  361. he says to Moses,

  362. make a fiery serpent

  363. and set it on a pole

  364. and everyone who is bitten

  365. when he sees it

  366. shall live.

  367. So Moses made a bronze serpent

  368. and set it on a pole

  369. and if a serpent bit anyone,

  370. he would look up

  371. at the bronze serpent

  372. and live.

  373. People,

  374. deservingly condemned to die,

  375. look up

  376. at something

  377. outside of themselves,

  378. in fact,

  379. at the very thing

  380. that was killing them

  381. and they live.

  382. Mercy, right?

  383. Deliverance,

  384. salvation.

  385. Remember that, Nicodemus?

  386. Verse 14,

  387. and as Moses lifted up

  388. the serpent in the wilderness,

  389. so must the Son of Man

  390. be lifted up

  391. that whoever believes in him

  392. may have eternal life.

  393. When Jesus says,

  394. lift it up,

  395. to be clear,

  396. he's talking,

  397. we find this out

  398. later in John's story,

  399. about his death

  400. on the cross.

  401. When Jesus takes our sin

  402. upon himself,

  403. when he becomes sin

  404. for us,

  405. so that just like

  406. with the snake,

  407. people deservingly condemned

  408. to die,

  409. like you and me,

  410. look up at something

  411. outside of themselves,

  412. in fact,

  413. the very thing,

  414. sin,

  415. that is killing them

  416. and they live.

  417. That is the good news,

  418. Nicodemus.

  419. You're trying to figure out

  420. exactly how Jesus

  421. fits into the kingdom

  422. of God,

  423. how you can have hope,

  424. where your problems

  425. get solved,

  426. and Jesus is saying,

  427. listen, listen,

  428. look to me.

  429. Trust me.

  430. God is giving you

  431. the gift

  432. that you must have

  433. and you receive

  434. the gift of life

  435. that you could not

  436. afford for yourself

  437. by looking to me,

  438. by trusting me.

  439. And now our beloved verse,

  440. for God so loved the world

  441. that he gave his only son,

  442. that whoever believes in him

  443. should not perish,

  444. but have eternal life.

  445. I know you love this verse already.

  446. I want to help you love it

  447. a little bit more, okay?

  448. Even more of God's gracious heart

  449. than you've ever seen here.

  450. The world stands against God,

  451. separated from him

  452. by sin and rebellion,

  453. deserving to die,

  454. so this,

  455. that this verse

  456. is talking about

  457. is God's love

  458. for the unlovely,

  459. the unlovable.

  460. This is grace, right?

  461. God so loved the world,

  462. in other words,

  463. God loved the world

  464. in this way,

  465. like God did

  466. with the serpent

  467. in the wilderness,

  468. that even though

  469. they, the world,

  470. deserved to die,

  471. he would give new life

  472. as a gift

  473. to anyone,

  474. not just those

  475. with less venom

  476. in their veins,

  477. not as,

  478. not as bad off,

  479. not, no, no,

  480. not just those,

  481. what does it say?

  482. Whoever,

  483. whoever would look

  484. to his son,

  485. God would in fact,

  486. this is amazing love,

  487. amazing grace,

  488. for this to happen,

  489. God would actually

  490. give his own son

  491. and watch him

  492. go to the cross

  493. and die.

  494. Maybe it didn't cost

  495. a lot to see

  496. a serpent

  497. put up on a pole,

  498. but God sends

  499. his own son

  500. to be lifted up

  501. on a cross

  502. to die

  503. so that those

  504. who believe in him,

  505. whoever believes in him,

  506. would have life.

  507. And don't read

  508. eternal life

  509. there

  510. and think that

  511. you have to wait

  512. until you die

  513. for that.

  514. No, no,

  515. that's not what it's like.

  516. God gives this life

  517. now.

  518. The word means

  519. the life of the age

  520. to come.

  521. True,

  522. abundant life

  523. in relationship

  524. with God,

  525. that's what makes it life,

  526. right?

  527. It's a present reality here.

  528. It tastes of glory.

  529. It's life that looks

  530. to Jesus for comfort

  531. in every sorrow

  532. and disappointment.

  533. It's life that trusts

  534. Jesus for his guidance

  535. in every step

  536. of the journey

  537. and every decision

  538. that you make.

  539. And it's life

  540. that continues forever,

  541. yes.

  542. It never ends,

  543. but it starts now

  544. when you are born again.

  545. That's the new life starting.

  546. Born again

  547. from above

  548. by trusting Jesus.

  549. Your new life

  550. with God,

  551. the life that you were

  552. made for,

  553. the life that you will

  554. enjoy forever

  555. begins now

  556. and in that life

  557. the best is always

  558. yet to come.

  559. Never now will it be

  560. what it will be then,

  561. but it starts now

  562. because God has moved in.

  563. Heaven has come to you.

  564. Boundless love

  565. from the heart of God

  566. that the Son of God

  567. is not sent

  568. to condemn God's enemies.

  569. That might have made sense.

  570. but to rescue them

  571. and make them sons.

  572. Verse 17,

  573. for God did not send

  574. his Son into the world

  575. to condemn the world,

  576. but in order that the world

  577. might be saved

  578. through him.

  579. Listen, y'all,

  580. if the problem is

  581. that the thing we most need

  582. is the thing we can't do,

  583. the solution is as hopeful

  584. as that seems hopeless.

  585. God does for us

  586. what we can't do

  587. for ourselves.

  588. He takes the death sentence

  589. that we were under

  590. so that we can be born again

  591. to new life.

  592. A pastor friend of mine

  593. tells a tragic yet beautiful story

  594. that I've shared with you before.

  595. It's of two brothers

  596. playing together

  597. in a small town in Missouri.

  598. And one afternoon

  599. they rode their bikes

  600. down to the sandbanks

  601. by the river

  602. but soon got caught

  603. in really dangerous quicksand.

  604. When they didn't return home

  605. for dinner,

  606. their parents organized

  607. a search for the two boys

  608. and they went rushing

  609. all around,

  610. eventually saw the bikes

  611. and then they saw

  612. the younger brother

  613. up to his neck in sand.

  614. They rushed over to him

  615. and as they freed him

  616. from the sand

  617. they said to him,

  618. where is your brother?

  619. He said,

  620. I'm standing

  621. on his shoulders.

  622. The sacrificial death

  623. of the older brother

  624. was the only way

  625. to give life

  626. to the one he loved.

  627. And the sacrificial death

  628. of Jesus

  629. was the only way

  630. to give life

  631. to the world

  632. that God loved.

  633. He entered into

  634. our condemnation, right?

  635. That we might stand on him

  636. and have his salvation.

  637. Our older brother

  638. gives his life

  639. to give us life

  640. and welcome us

  641. for the first time

  642. into the family.

  643. Now as wonderfully simple

  644. as that is,

  645. to get what you most need

  646. as a gift

  647. by just trusting Jesus,

  648. just by standing on him,

  649. it is equally necessary.

  650. You must believe.

  651. Verse 18,

  652. whoever believes in him,

  653. his son,

  654. the son of God,

  655. is not condemned.

  656. But whoever does not believe

  657. is condemned already

  658. because he has not believed

  659. in the name

  660. of the only son of God.

  661. Listen,

  662. there's plenty of condemnation

  663. to go around, right?

  664. Remember how I said

  665. you must be born again?

  666. If you haven't entrusted yourself

  667. to the son of God,

  668. then you stand condemned.

  669. In fact,

  670. you are hiding from him

  671. in the dark.

  672. This is the judgment.

  673. The light has come

  674. into the world

  675. and people loved the darkness

  676. rather than the light

  677. because their deeds

  678. were evil.

  679. For everyone who does

  680. wicked things hates the light

  681. and does not come to the light

  682. lest his deeds

  683. should be exposed.

  684. But whoever does

  685. what is true

  686. comes to the light

  687. so that it may be

  688. clearly seen

  689. that his deeds

  690. have been carried out

  691. in God.

  692. You've been hiding

  693. in the dark perhaps,

  694. but there is an invitation

  695. to the light,

  696. to life in the light.

  697. There may well be

  698. plenty of condemnation

  699. to go around

  700. when we stand on our own,

  701. but when we stand

  702. in the sun,

  703. there is none.

  704. Do you sometimes

  705. condemn yourself

  706. in your own thoughts?

  707. Does Satan accuse you?

  708. Are the voices

  709. of condemnation

  710. around you

  711. really loud?

  712. If you trust Jesus,

  713. know that he came

  714. not to condemn you,

  715. but to save you.

  716. No matter what

  717. those loud voices say,

  718. there is therefore now

  719. no condemnation

  720. for those

  721. who are in Christ Jesus.

  722. Amen?

  723. No condemnation.

  724. Listen, Nicodemus,

  725. Jesus says.

  726. Listen,

  727. uncertain,

  728. confused,

  729. questioning friend.

  730. even if you don't

  731. have it all figured out yet.

  732. It's being born again

  733. throwing you off.

  734. It may have happened

  735. to you

  736. and you didn't even realize

  737. that the spirit

  738. blew through your heart.

  739. Jesus is saying,

  740. go home considering this.

  741. Whoever believes in me

  742. is not condemned.

  743. Stick with me,

  744. Jesus says.

  745. Trust me

  746. to have it figured out

  747. when you don't.

  748. It's why God sent me.

  749. Know that you can find life today,

  750. life forever

  751. in relationship with me.

  752. Friend,

  753. if you are looking to Jesus

  754. for life,

  755. you've found it.

  756. If you have tasted

  757. his goodness

  758. and grace,

  759. then you will feast on it

  760. forever.

  761. It's his promise to you.

  762. What a great offer

  763. that is this morning

  764. to all of us

  765. to taste and know today

  766. of his love.

  767. But if you're honest,

  768. maybe you're still

  769. not quite there.

  770. Maybe Jesus' answer

  771. sounds like

  772. all talk to you.

  773. I can relate to that.

  774. We come to Jesus

  775. longing for hope,

  776. wanting to be made new,

  777. searching for life,

  778. and we come to Jesus

  779. and all he says is,

  780. trust me.

  781. If that's all it was,

  782. I'd say you'd be right

  783. to be skeptical.

  784. Anyone can say those words,

  785. right?

  786. People have said them

  787. to you before,

  788. trust me,

  789. and they've let you down

  790. and you're not about

  791. to be let down again.

  792. Maybe you'll just keep

  793. looking for another way

  794. to avoid death

  795. and find real life.

  796. Jesus doesn't stop there.

  797. He doesn't just give

  798. these words as an answer.

  799. Jesus' other answer

  800. to our questions

  801. backs up his words,

  802. and don't miss this.

  803. He is in essence here

  804. inviting Nicodemus

  805. to continue with him,

  806. to keep following after him

  807. as he walks

  808. in order to find

  809. that eternal,

  810. everlasting life.

  811. And as Nicodemus does that,

  812. follows with him

  813. in one of the most

  814. widely attested events

  815. in all of human history,

  816. Jesus,

  817. in just a couple short years,

  818. dies on a Roman cross,

  819. being lifted up

  820. as he promised

  821. in agonizing death

  822. to offer everlasting life.

  823. Nicodemus, by the way,

  824. is there

  825. and helps prepare

  826. Jesus' body for burial

  827. and place it

  828. in the tomb.

  829. I don't care

  830. if you've been in church

  831. one day,

  832. this is your first time,

  833. or if you've been in church

  834. for 90 years.

  835. Either way,

  836. I want to invite you

  837. to bring your questions

  838. and your uncertainties

  839. and your confusion

  840. all the way

  841. to the cross

  842. this morning.

  843. To listen

  844. to the promises

  845. of Jesus,

  846. yes,

  847. to hear

  848. the good news

  849. of the new birth

  850. and the life

  851. that he offers to you

  852. that you could never

  853. afford for yourself,

  854. and then

  855. to see at the cross

  856. him

  857. take your death

  858. so that he can

  859. give you

  860. that new life

  861. with him

  862. today

  863. and forever.

  864. Let's pray.

  865. God,

  866. your love

  867. must really be

  868. beyond

  869. our imagination.

  870. That you would

  871. sacrifice

  872. your beloved son

  873. for your sworn enemies.

  874. Father,

  875. you know how I long

  876. for every person

  877. in here,

  878. for every soul

  879. in this room

  880. to know new birth

  881. and true life

  882. and unending joy

  883. and relationship

  884. with you,

  885. and so I ask

  886. that you would

  887. send your spirit

  888. that I can't control

  889. to give sight

  890. to our eyes,

  891. faith to our hearts,

  892. use these very

  893. common elements

  894. for that very

  895. special purpose

  896. that we would

  897. see your love

  898. in the broken body,

  899. in the shed blood,

  900. in the saving death

  901. of your son.

  902. And we ask it

  903. in his name.

  904. Amen.
