  1. You are listening to a message from Southwood Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama.

  2. Our passion is to experience and express grace.

  3. Join us.

  4. Thank you, yes.

  5. Beautiful.

  6. That beautiful song is about the beautiful story that we come to in John 4 today.

  7. Mark so helpfully last week showed us the importance, the centrality of Jesus.

  8. And we've encountered Jesus here in the Gospel of John as he engages with religious leaders like Nicodemus.

  9. And today an encounter Jesus has with someone quite different.

  10. With a Samaritan woman at the well.

  11. Before we read the passage together, let me read you just a little bit of Ruby's story.

  12. Name and details made up by me.

  13. Ruby slipped out the back of class a couple minutes before the bell.

  14. She was hoping to make it to the next class before everyone else and avoid the hateful stares the hallway seemed full of again today.

  15. Just yesterday, the once well-liked senior became hated by what seemed like every girl in the school.

  16. Every phone on campus pinged with evidence of her poor decisions with multiple boys.

  17. Everyone knew.

  18. No one was happy.

  19. The hallway was silent.

  20. Oh, perfect.

  21. Until a door opened on the far end and Reggie hobbled out on crutches.

  22. Also getting a head start on the class change.

  23. He had to be the nicest guy at the school.

  24. Even since he broke his leg in the last football game of the season.

  25. I'll just slip quickly by him, Ruby thought, head down.

  26. Hey, could you help me open this locker?

  27. Oh, sure, she said.

  28. Hey, thanks, said Reggie.

  29. Hey, I know you've had a hard couple of days.

  30. Can I help you with anything?

  31. I don't think I need to get involved with another boy right now.

  32. Everybody already hates me, Ruby said.

  33. Oh, yeah, I get that.

  34. But listen, you know there's someone who will love you no matter what, right?

  35. You know about Jesus?

  36. Yeah, I've heard, Ruby rolled her eyes.

  37. I'm pretty sure he won't love me right now.

  38. Pretty sure he's seen the pictures too.

  39. He might surprise you, Reggie said.

  40. Let me tell you the story of when Jesus met the woman at the well.

  41. Now, when Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and baptizing more disciples than John,

  42. although Jesus himself did not baptize but only his disciples,

  43. he left Judea and departed again for Galilee.

  44. And he had to pass through Samaria.

  45. So he came to a town of Samaria called Sychar,

  46. near the field that Jacob had given to his son Joseph.

  47. Jacob's well was there, so Jesus,

  48. wearied as he was from his journey,

  49. was sitting beside the well.

  50. It was about the sixth hour.

  51. It's noon.

  52. Jesus, don't you love his full humanity on display here?

  53. He's weary in the heat of a long, dusty walk.

  54. Seems likely that he's hoping for a drink from this well or a nap beside it.

  55. And someone interrupts his rest.

  56. We'll read the rest of the first half of our text where we see his encounter with this woman.

  57. There came a woman of Samaria to draw water.

  58. Jesus said to her,

  59. Give me a drink.

  60. For his disciples had gone away into the city to buy food.

  61. The Samaritan woman said to him,

  62. How is it that you, a Jew, ask for a drink from me, a woman of Samaria?

  63. For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.

  64. Jesus answered her,

  65. If you knew the gift of God and who it is that is saying to you,

  66. Give me a drink,

  67. You would have asked him and he would have given you living water.

  68. The woman said to him,

  69. Sir, you have nothing to draw water with and the well is deep.

  70. Where do you get that living water?

  71. Are you greater than our father Jacob?

  72. He gave us the well and drank from it himself as did his sons and his livestock.

  73. Jesus said to her,

  74. Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again.

  75. But whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty forever.

  76. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.

  77. And the woman said to him,

  78. Sir, give me this water so that I will not be thirsty or have to come here to draw water.

  79. Jesus said to her,

  80. Go call your husband and come here.

  81. The woman answered him,

  82. I have no husband.

  83. Jesus said to her,

  84. You are right in saying I have no husband for you have had five husbands

  85. and the one you now have is not your husband.

  86. What you have said is true.

  87. The woman said to him,

  88. Sir, I perceive that you are a prophet.

  89. Our fathers worshipped on this mountain,

  90. but you say that in Jerusalem is the place where people ought to worship.

  91. Jesus said to her,

  92. Woman, believe me,

  93. the hour is coming when neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father.

  94. You worship what you do not know.

  95. We worship what we know,

  96. for salvation is from the Jews.

  97. But the hour is coming and is now here

  98. when the true worshippers will worship the Father in spirit and truth,

  99. for the Father is seeking such people to worship him.

  100. God is spirit,

  101. and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.

  102. The woman said to him,

  103. I know that Messiah is coming,

  104. he who is called Christ.

  105. When he comes,

  106. he will tell us all things.

  107. Jesus said to her,

  108. I who speak to you am he.

  109. Jesus,

  110. may we encounter you today

  111. just like this woman did.

  112. Might we really know you?

  113. Holy Spirit,

  114. would you show us

  115. our Savior

  116. so clearly,

  117. so gloriously,

  118. so needfully for us.

  119. We ask it in his name.

  120. Amen.

  121. We'll read the rest of the story in a few minutes.

  122. But first,

  123. I want you to notice this remarkable interaction

  124. between Jesus and this woman

  125. as Jesus gives thirst quenching water.

  126. The first remarkable thing about it

  127. is that this conversation even happens.

  128. It's really amazing.

  129. To engage this woman,

  130. Jesus crosses all sorts of boundaries.

  131. He asks for her help,

  132. and she knows

  133. that he's breaking lots of rules.

  134. Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.

  135. They were considered religious rejects,

  136. not pure blood Jews.

  137. They're social outcasts.

  138. Some said at the time

  139. that even their shadow,

  140. touching your shadow,

  141. would make a Jew unclean.

  142. On top of that,

  143. she is a woman,

  144. minimized in this society,

  145. looked down on by many men,

  146. certainly not to be spoken to

  147. by Jewish men in public.

  148. We'll read later,

  149. even his disciples are astonished

  150. that Jesus is talking with her.

  151. Religious, racial,

  152. gender boundaries.

  153. Plus, and maybe she thinks

  154. he doesn't realize this,

  155. but I'm morally outcast.

  156. So even her fellow Samaritans

  157. won't associate with her,

  158. which likely explains

  159. why she comes for an exhausting task

  160. in the heat of the noonday sun

  161. rather than early or late in the day

  162. with all the other women.

  163. Her relationship with men,

  164. including one presently married

  165. to someone else, it seems,

  166. leave her isolated from friends.

  167. She's alone.

  168. Nonetheless,

  169. across all those boundaries,

  170. this holy teacher,

  171. who by the way,

  172. does know all about her,

  173. wants to engage her in conversation.

  174. Asks for her help,

  175. even for her to touch water

  176. that he will then drink.

  177. It's safe to say that

  178. the woman did not come to the well

  179. looking for Jesus, did she?

  180. In fact, for quite a while here,

  181. she'll avoid his personal inquiries.

  182. Maybe that's you today.

  183. I don't know.

  184. Maybe you're stuck here with family.

  185. Better plans fell through,

  186. if you're honest.

  187. You're just clocking in,

  188. not looking for Jesus.

  189. She is there for one very clear reason,

  190. to get water.

  191. Not looking for Jesus, right?

  192. But Jesus humbly engages her.

  193. He takes her natural need,

  194. this need for water,

  195. and turns it to a spiritual conversation.

  196. Isn't that amazing how he does that?

  197. Does he do that in your life?

  198. Where he meets you where you are,

  199. experiencing something in your life,

  200. and all of a sudden he starts to

  201. starts to kind of work in here,

  202. in your heart,

  203. to show you something

  204. maybe you weren't even aware of.

  205. That's the goodness and grace of Jesus,

  206. y'all, so on display in this interaction.

  207. Listen, at every turn,

  208. no matter what the situation,

  209. he's more overflowing with blessing

  210. than we are with need, isn't he?

  211. He's more eager to hear

  212. than we are to pray.

  213. He's more quick to forgive

  214. than we are to repent.

  215. Amazing how wonderful Jesus is.

  216. We get a taste of it here.

  217. She's there for water,

  218. and Jesus offers her water,

  219. living water.

  220. Later in John chapter seven,

  221. Jesus identifies this living water

  222. as his Holy Spirit.

  223. But it's the same word

  224. when he says living water,

  225. that they also used for running water.

  226. So this woman keeps right on

  227. with her natural focus

  228. on natural water to drink.

  229. Even when Jesus takes it up a notch

  230. and talks about living water

  231. that becomes a spring of water

  232. welling up inside you

  233. to eternal life

  234. so that you never thirst again.

  235. Wow!

  236. Right?

  237. Just hear the words of that song

  238. in your mind.

  239. You'll never thirst again.

  240. There's water that Jesus gives.

  241. Amazing promise.

  242. And even as she asks for this water,

  243. she thinks of it as very natural,

  244. doesn't she?

  245. It's going to be so I won't have to walk

  246. to this well again

  247. in the heat of the day.

  248. That's as deep as she will admit

  249. her thirst at this point.

  250. But Jesus is so good.

  251. He won't stop there.

  252. And maybe where she's stopping for now,

  253. but he won't stop

  254. at addressing our physical needs.

  255. He knows that every one of us

  256. is deeply thirsty.

  257. Dying of thirst, if you will.

  258. Deep inside, we're thirsty.

  259. And with insight that this story

  260. seems to ascribe to a prophetic gift

  261. given to him through the Holy Spirit

  262. inside him,

  263. Jesus exposes where she's looking

  264. to quench her deeper thirst.

  265. Do you see that?

  266. He's not attacking her.

  267. He's not yelling at her.

  268. He's not even changing the subject on her,

  269. but he's not stopping short

  270. of her deepest need either, is he?

  271. Go get your husband and come back.

  272. I don't have one.

  273. True.

  274. The man you're with is someone else's.

  275. And this is not your first challenging,

  276. eventually empty relationship

  277. that has left you thirsty.

  278. She's not the first or the last person

  279. to look to romance or relationships

  280. to quench her thirst, is she?

  281. You know, one of the reasons that's so common

  282. and so many of us experience that

  283. is that relationships resonate deeply

  284. with each of us

  285. because we were made for them.

  286. We were made to be in relationship,

  287. especially we were made to be in relationship

  288. with God himself.

  289. That closest and most important relationship.

  290. And Jesus is telling her,

  291. the water of men will not quench your thirst for long.

  292. She needs his living water.

  293. She needs something more than what she is tasting currently.

  294. Currently.

  295. I ask you to consider this morning,

  296. where is your thirst most evident?

  297. You don't walk to wells very often to get water.

  298. Let's think a little deeper than that.

  299. Are you desperately chasing relationship and romance?

  300. In a marriage?

  301. Outside of your marriage?

  302. If that boy would just show me attention?

  303. If that girl would just like me?

  304. Or it may be

  305. that your ultimate thirst

  306. is exposed in your endless workaholism.

  307. Maybe in your desperate chase

  308. for fulfilling experiences,

  309. for that perfect fall break vacation,

  310. not to meddle.

  311. Your obsession with your kids' success.

  312. I don't know.

  313. Where is it that you're looking to quench your thirst

  314. that you already realize has left you thirsty?

  315. You've tasted it and you're thirsty again.

  316. You've gone back.

  317. Or maybe you know, if you're honest,

  318. that in the blink of an eye,

  319. beyond your control,

  320. it could leave you there thirsty.

  321. That thing that's quenching your thirst today

  322. might not tomorrow.

  323. Well, the woman,

  324. perhaps intrigued by this spiritual conversation,

  325. perhaps, as we're wont to do,

  326. just asking the most common theological question of the day

  327. when she sees this must be a Jewish prophet,

  328. she asks about where people should worship.

  329. See, among other religiously sketchy decisions

  330. that the Samaritans had made,

  331. they had built their own temple

  332. in which to worship Yahweh.

  333. So much angered the Jews

  334. that about a hundred years before this conversation,

  335. the Jews had come and destroyed

  336. this Samaritan temple.

  337. Only the temple in Jerusalem

  338. for the true God, they said.

  339. What do you say?

  340. She asks prophet Jesus.

  341. The hour is coming

  342. when you won't worship here

  343. in Samaria

  344. or in Jerusalem,

  345. specifically, Jesus says.

  346. Yeah, the Samaritans were misguided on the temple,

  347. but the hour is coming

  348. even already kind of here

  349. when true worshipers will worship

  350. in spirit and truth.

  351. This woman is striking out at this point.

  352. Religious failure.

  353. Moral failure.

  354. Social failure.

  355. Nothing to her credit.

  356. Not worthy of knowing Yahweh,

  357. the one true God.

  358. And yet,

  359. here he is

  360. telling her

  361. how to do exactly that.

  362. How to do what she was made to do

  363. to worship God

  364. truly

  365. in spirit

  366. and truth.

  367. And there is so much written

  368. on what that means.

  369. At the heart of it

  370. is that the true focus of worship

  371. is not a building.

  372. It's not a particular place,

  373. an outward style

  374. or formality.

  375. No,

  376. true worship,

  377. real relationship

  378. with the living God

  379. happens in all of life

  380. and in gathered services

  381. like this one

  382. through the Holy Spirit

  383. and the Son

  384. who gives him.

  385. Remember just a few weeks ago

  386. when Jesus cleansed the temple

  387. and then he offered

  388. to rebuild it

  389. in three days.

  390. He was saying,

  391. I am

  392. the temple.

  393. I am

  394. the true way

  395. to know

  396. and to worship God.

  397. True worship

  398. comes to the Father

  399. through Jesus the Son

  400. by his indwelling spirit.

  401. That's what's essential

  402. in worship.

  403. All else is secondary

  404. to that.

  405. Does your worship

  406. on Sundays

  407. help you encounter

  408. and engage

  409. with the real Jesus

  410. full of grace

  411. and truth

  412. as the word of God

  413. reveals him?

  414. Does your worship

  415. Monday through Saturday,

  416. because it's not just

  417. a Sunday thing

  418. if it's the true God

  419. you're worshiping

  420. in relationship,

  421. does your worship

  422. Monday through Saturday

  423. help you walk

  424. with his spirit

  425. moment by moment

  426. aware of his presence

  427. with you?

  428. Aware that he has

  429. a plan for your life

  430. that you're to follow?

  431. Aware that he has

  432. a mission that he has

  433. sent you on

  434. for his glory?

  435. That's what you were

  436. made for,

  437. friends,

  438. living with him,

  439. learning his heart,

  440. seeking his glory,

  441. and it all happens

  442. in Jesus.

  443. Especially it happens

  444. through his death

  445. on the cross.

  446. Remember that's what

  447. his hour

  448. means in John's

  449. gospel.

  450. The hour is coming,

  451. verse 23.

  452. He's ushering in

  453. new worship

  454. that is focused

  455. on Jesus Christ

  456. and him crucified.

  457. The one way to God.

  458. God.

  459. And as he talks

  460. about it

  461. and teaches us

  462. that,

  463. here he is,

  464. here he is

  465. with the most

  466. unworthy people

  467. in the world

  468. to be participating

  469. in this worship.

  470. To be a part

  471. of this

  472. unbelievable relationship.

  473. Here he is

  474. inviting them

  475. into worship,

  476. giving his life

  477. for them,

  478. offering to give

  479. them the living

  480. water of the spirit.

  481. That's a lot.

  482. The woman says,

  483. you know,

  484. the Messiah

  485. will come

  486. and sort

  487. all this out.

  488. Although perhaps

  489. she's wondering

  490. now.

  491. And Jesus says,

  492. pleased to meet you.

  493. That's me

  494. and make no mistake

  495. about it.

  496. No more metaphor.

  497. No more analogy

  498. on the person

  499. of Jesus

  500. as the promised king,

  501. the hope

  502. of every thirsty soul

  503. as simple

  504. and clear

  505. as he can possibly be.

  506. Don't get confused

  507. on how you worship right

  508. or on what the water is

  509. or what all this means.

  510. Come to Jesus

  511. and have him

  512. sort it all out for you.

  513. Whether you've trusted

  514. Jesus before or not,

  515. will you come

  516. to Jesus today?

  517. Will you believe today

  518. that the one

  519. who quenches

  520. the thirst

  521. you really feel

  522. more deeply

  523. than you know,

  524. maybe that you haven't

  525. stopped to feel lately?

  526. The one who quenches

  527. that thirst

  528. is not your husband

  529. or your wife.

  530. It's not your friend

  531. or your financial planner.

  532. It's not any of those.

  533. It is Jesus himself.

  534. He offers you

  535. living water

  536. that will fill you up

  537. even when everyone else

  538. lets you down.

  539. Even when everything else

  540. leaves you empty.

  541. He offers fullness

  542. of life with him

  543. that never ends.

  544. And in fact,

  545. it changes everything now

  546. too.

  547. That's the second piece

  548. of the story.

  549. If he's meeting you

  550. and quenching your thirst,

  551. if maybe even

  552. for the first time

  553. you're thinking,

  554. man,

  555. there is something more

  556. that won't leave me

  557. thirsty and empty.

  558. then know that this

  559. thirst quenching water

  560. Jesus gives

  561. is also overflowing water.

  562. The woman is living this

  563. in this passage

  564. while the disciples

  565. are learning this

  566. from Jesus.

  567. Let's pick up

  568. at verse 27.

  569. Just then,

  570. while this amazing interaction

  571. is going on

  572. between Jesus

  573. and this woman,

  574. just then

  575. his disciples came back.

  576. They marveled

  577. that he was talking

  578. with a woman

  579. but no one said,

  580. what do you seek

  581. or why are you

  582. talking with her?

  583. So the woman

  584. left her water jar

  585. and went away

  586. into town

  587. and said to the people,

  588. come see a man

  589. who told me

  590. all that I ever did.

  591. Can this be the Christ?

  592. They went out

  593. of the town

  594. and were coming

  595. to him.

  596. See,

  597. they noticed

  598. the boundaries

  599. that Jesus has crossed,

  600. and the woman

  601. adds another

  602. of her own

  603. to those

  604. that the disciples

  605. can already see.

  606. She's going

  607. to the people

  608. that she was avoiding

  609. earlier in the same day

  610. that she didn't want

  611. to be around.

  612. Water jar

  613. left behind.

  614. Isn't that interesting?

  615. The cares of this world

  616. cannot distract her

  617. from the glory

  618. of Jesus.

  619. She needs to go

  620. tell people about him

  621. even though she's

  622. still thirsty.

  623. There is now life

  624. welling up in her

  625. and overflowing.

  626. See,

  627. Jesus gives water

  628. so graciously

  629. that when he quenches

  630. our thirst,

  631. there's always more

  632. still pouring in.

  633. It changes our lives.

  634. It impacts the way

  635. we live that day.

  636. Look how this happens

  637. with the disciples'

  638. perspective.

  639. They're about to be

  640. confused about

  641. natural food

  642. just as the woman

  643. was confused

  644. about natural water.

  645. Verse 31.

  646. Meanwhile,

  647. the disciples

  648. were urging him

  649. saying, Rabbi, eat!

  650. But he said to them,

  651. I have food to eat

  652. that you do not

  653. know about.

  654. So the disciples,

  655. they're a little slow,

  656. be patient with them,

  657. they said to one another,

  658. has anyone brought him

  659. something to eat?

  660. Oh, come on now.

  661. Jesus said to them,

  662. listen,

  663. my food

  664. is to do the will

  665. of him who sent me

  666. and to accomplish

  667. his work.

  668. Nobody slipped me

  669. a sandwich.

  670. No.

  671. Once again,

  672. Jesus is taking

  673. a natural need

  674. into a spiritual

  675. conversation,

  676. isn't he?

  677. He wants the disciples

  678. to know something

  679. so important.

  680. Listen, Jesus says,

  681. there is nothing

  682. as fulfilling

  683. as living

  684. with God,

  685. as going

  686. where he

  687. sends you,

  688. as pointing others

  689. to him.

  690. Jesus came

  691. for the express purpose

  692. of giving living

  693. water

  694. to thirsty people

  695. and not even

  696. the need for a lunch break

  697. can stop him

  698. from doing that.

  699. That fills him up.

  700. See,

  701. when you receive

  702. this living water,

  703. your whole view

  704. of life

  705. is transformed

  706. and alongside

  707. knowing the one

  708. who gives it yourself,

  709. your highest

  710. and most fulfilling

  711. purpose in whatever

  712. you're doing

  713. changes.

  714. changes.

  715. It's not money

  716. anymore

  717. or fame

  718. or pleasure.

  719. It's actually

  720. other people

  721. knowing the one

  722. who gives

  723. the living water,

  724. having their

  725. ultimate thirst

  726. quenched.

  727. That's your new

  728. deepest and highest

  729. longing

  730. and calling.

  731. Listen to what

  732. Jesus says.

  733. Do you not say

  734. there are yet

  735. four months,

  736. then comes the harvest?

  737. Look,

  738. I tell you,

  739. lift up your eyes

  740. and see that the fields

  741. are white for harvest.

  742. Already the one

  743. who reaps

  744. is receiving wages

  745. and gathering fruit

  746. for eternal life

  747. so that sower

  748. and reaper

  749. may rejoice together.

  750. For here the saying

  751. holds true,

  752. one sows

  753. and another reaps.

  754. I sent you to reap

  755. that for which

  756. you did not labor.

  757. Others have labored

  758. and you have entered

  759. into their labor.

  760. Look,

  761. Jesus says,

  762. now,

  763. today,

  764. because I am here,

  765. people are coming

  766. into the kingdom

  767. from places

  768. you'd least expect it,

  769. disciples,

  770. across all the boundaries

  771. you might be thinking of.

  772. And this is your calling,

  773. your purpose,

  774. your delight

  775. as my followers

  776. to reap the harvest

  777. that I have sown.

  778. The fields,

  779. friends,

  780. are ripe

  781. for harvest.

  782. harvest.

  783. Is your mouth

  784. eager

  785. to share

  786. the good news?

  787. Is it quick

  788. to be praying

  789. with your neighbors?

  790. Are you always

  791. talking about Jesus

  792. or

  793. is your mouth,

  794. and this is the image

  795. that came to mind

  796. for me,

  797. is your mouth

  798. full of bread

  799. like the disciples?

  800. That's what they're

  801. thinking about,

  802. isn't it?

  803. You can't talk

  804. well when it,

  805. you're just stuffing

  806. your own face.

  807. Are you so

  808. caught up

  809. in the things

  810. of this world

  811. that you can't

  812. be bothered

  813. to see

  814. the glory

  815. of Jesus

  816. yourself,

  817. much less

  818. to share

  819. of it with others?

  820. Or maybe,

  821. maybe have you

  822. left your

  823. water jar,

  824. your

  825. previous

  826. priorities,

  827. the things

  828. that you

  829. so quickly

  830. would have been

  831. trying to gather

  832. to yourself

  833. and spend

  834. your time

  835. and your energy

  836. on?

  837. Have you

  838. left your

  839. water jar

  840. to use

  841. whatever relationship,

  842. whatever occupation,

  843. whatever interaction

  844. Jesus gives you

  845. to let living

  846. water overflow

  847. from you?

  848. Jesus has

  849. come.

  850. Jesus has

  851. died.

  852. Jesus is

  853. risen.

  854. It is

  855. harvest time,

  856. friends.

  857. harvest time

  858. for people

  859. to come

  860. into his

  861. kingdom.

  862. He has

  863. done the

  864. work.

  865. You get

  866. to reap

  867. and see

  868. people come

  869. in to know

  870. him and to

  871. taste living

  872. water.

  873. What a

  874. privilege.

  875. Look what

  876. happens.

  877. Maybe you

  878. think,

  879. he couldn't

  880. use me to

  881. do that.

  882. Look what

  883. happens when

  884. an untrained,

  885. immoral,

  886. theological

  887. novice

  888. encounters

  889. Jesus

  890. and is

  891. filled with

  892. his spirit.

  893. Not just

  894. one Samaritan

  895. converted,

  896. but a

  897. revival

  898. of the

  899. rejects.

  900. Verse 39.

  901. Many

  902. Samaritans

  903. from that

  904. town believed

  905. in him

  906. because of

  907. the woman's

  908. testimony.

  909. He told

  910. me all

  911. that I

  912. ever did.

  913. So when

  914. the Samaritans

  915. came to

  916. him,

  917. they asked

  918. him to

  919. stay with

  920. them and

  921. he stayed

  922. there two

  923. days.

  924. They just

  925. wanted to

  926. be with

  927. Jesus,

  928. didn't they?

  929. And many

  930. more believed

  931. because of

  932. his word.

  933. They said

  934. to the

  935. woman,

  936. it's no

  937. longer

  938. because of

  939. what you

  940. said that

  941. we believe

  942. for we

  943. have heard

  944. ourselves

  945. and we

  946. know that

  947. this is

  948. indeed the

  949. savior of

  950. the world.

  951. She points

  952. people where?

  953. To Jesus.

  954. And she's

  955. delighted

  956. apparently for

  957. him to be

  958. the hero,

  959. the focus,

  960. the center

  961. of attention.

  962. After all,

  963. he is the

  964. savior of

  965. the world,

  966. a mark of

  967. the Messiah,

  968. the Christ

  969. that she's

  970. looking for,

  971. that God's

  972. salvation would

  973. go not just

  974. to the Jews

  975. but really in

  976. a fresh,

  977. never before

  978. experienced

  979. way to

  980. the ends

  981. of the

  982. earth.

  983. Samaritans

  984. en masse

  985. embracing

  986. a Jewish

  987. Messiah.

  988. Messiah.

  989. What is

  990. happening?

  991. Not just

  992. a savior

  993. for those

  994. who look

  995. the part

  996. or measure

  997. up or have

  998. figured out

  999. where they're

  1000. supposed to

  1001. worship or

  1002. how they're

  1003. supposed to

  1004. relate to

  1005. God but

  1006. who come

  1007. to him

  1008. and find

  1009. him to

  1010. be the

  1011. savior of

  1012. the whole

  1013. world.

  1014. all because

  1015. a thirsty

  1016. woman

  1017. encountered

  1018. Jesus.

  1019. Wow.

  1020. Years after

  1021. encountering

  1022. the real

  1023. Jesus for

  1024. the first

  1025. time in a

  1026. high school

  1027. hallway,

  1028. Ruby lives

  1029. for Jesus

  1030. in all sorts

  1031. of places

  1032. including those

  1033. hallways.

  1034. she loves

  1035. getting to

  1036. talk with

  1037. high school

  1038. girls,

  1039. especially

  1040. those who

  1041. feel they've

  1042. blown it,

  1043. could never

  1044. know true

  1045. love.

  1046. She delights

  1047. to tell them

  1048. of Jesus'

  1049. love,

  1050. a love that

  1051. never fails

  1052. and is more

  1053. quick to

  1054. forgive than

  1055. we are to

  1056. repent.

  1057. But many of

  1058. the conversations

  1059. she's having

  1060. these days are

  1061. with people

  1062. in her office,

  1063. some whose

  1064. spouses have

  1065. let them

  1066. down,

  1067. others who

  1068. just feel a

  1069. longing for

  1070. something more

  1071. in life and

  1072. they'll talk to

  1073. her,

  1074. there's living

  1075. water that

  1076. really satisfies,

  1077. she tells

  1078. them,

  1079. found only in

  1080. one place.

  1081. Ruby even

  1082. gets to

  1083. volunteer weekly

  1084. at a crisis

  1085. pregnancy center

  1086. where her

  1087. favorite story

  1088. to share with

  1089. disappointed,

  1090. despondent,

  1091. even despairing

  1092. women is of

  1093. a woman like

  1094. them.

  1095. the woman

  1096. at the well

  1097. who met

  1098. a savior

  1099. who understood

  1100. her thirst,

  1101. knew her

  1102. story,

  1103. and gave

  1104. her life.

  1105. Often,

  1106. Ruby gets

  1107. to explain

  1108. that's her

  1109. story and

  1110. that the

  1111. fountain she's

  1112. been drinking

  1113. from has

  1114. never run dry

  1115. on her,

  1116. keeps overflowing

  1117. from her,

  1118. and will never

  1119. run dry for

  1120. them either.

  1121. No matter

  1122. what you've

  1123. done,

  1124. she loves

  1125. to tell

  1126. them,

  1127. Jesus really

  1128. is the

  1129. savior of

  1130. the world,

  1131. and that's

  1132. all that

  1133. matters.

  1134. There's life

  1135. the way you

  1136. were made

  1137. for in

  1138. relationship

  1139. with him.

  1140. for Jesus

  1141. to be the

  1142. savior of

  1143. the world.

  1144. He knew

  1145. that it

  1146. would take

  1147. another day

  1148. where he

  1149. would be

  1150. thirsty,

  1151. and where

  1152. no one

  1153. would offer

  1154. him anything

  1155. to drink

  1156. to quench

  1157. his thirst.

  1158. A day

  1159. when his

  1160. hour truly

  1161. would have

  1162. come,

  1163. and he

  1164. would hang

  1165. on a

  1166. cross

  1167. thirsty,

  1168. so that

  1169. we would

  1170. stand in

  1171. the presence

  1172. of the

  1173. holy and

  1174. living God,

  1175. joyful and

  1176. satisfied

  1177. forever.

  1178. And he

  1179. was absolutely

  1180. committed to

  1181. the point of

  1182. being fed

  1183. and filled

  1184. up by it.

  1185. he was

  1186. absolutely

  1187. committed to

  1188. accomplishing the

  1189. work that his

  1190. father had given

  1191. him, to

  1192. finishing that

  1193. task.

  1194. And so on a

  1195. night when he

  1196. was betrayed

  1197. by a close

  1198. friend,

  1199. Jesus took

  1200. bread,

  1201. and he broke

  1202. it, and he

  1203. gave it to his

  1204. disciples.

  1205. As I'm

  1206. ministering in

  1207. his name,

  1208. give this bread

  1209. to you.

  1210. He said,

  1211. take and eat.

  1212. This is my

  1213. body given

  1214. for you.

  1215. Do this in

  1216. remembrance of

  1217. me.

  1218. And in the

  1219. same way,

  1220. after supper,

  1221. he took the

  1222. cup and said,

  1223. this cup is a

  1224. new covenant in

  1225. my blood, shed

  1226. for many for the

  1227. forgiveness of

  1228. sins.

  1229. Drink from it,

  1230. all of you.

  1231. There's power in

  1232. the blood of

  1233. Jesus, and if you

  1234. know that, if you

  1235. are thirsty and

  1236. have found in

  1237. Jesus living

  1238. water, come and

  1239. drink and eat.

  1240. You may know

  1241. him, but you

  1242. may be tired and

  1243. thirsty and

  1244. needing to be

  1245. refilled.

  1246. Come, he is

  1247. here to give

  1248. you of his

  1249. spirit again

  1250. today.

  1251. This is not the

  1252. table of

  1253. Southwood or the

  1254. Presbyterian

  1255. church.

  1256. It's the Lord's

  1257. table.

  1258. It's the place

  1259. where if you

  1260. trust him, if

  1261. you've made that

  1262. public and become

  1263. a part of a

  1264. church that

  1265. preaches that

  1266. life is found in

  1267. Jesus, then you

  1268. come and he

  1269. promises to pour

  1270. his spirit into

  1271. you so that it

  1272. wells up to you

  1273. to eternal life

  1274. and overflows from

  1275. you.

  1276. You come and

  1277. drink of that

  1278. water this

  1279. morning.

  1280. If you don't

  1281. look at this

  1282. table and see

  1283. Jesus, see him

  1284. as the one you

  1285. long for and

  1286. find life in, he

  1287. warns you not yet

  1288. to come to this

  1289. table and take

  1290. these elements.

  1291. But he invites

  1292. you to drink of

  1293. the living water.

  1294. You've heard it in

  1295. his very words.

  1296. Water that if you

  1297. drink, you will

  1298. never thirst again.

  1299. He will cross any

  1300. boundaries to give

  1301. it to you.

  1302. You're not too far

  1303. away from him.

  1304. You are not too

  1305. far gone.

  1306. He invites you to

  1307. come no matter how

  1308. thirsty you are and

  1309. drink and never

  1310. thirst again.

  1311. let's pray and

  1312. we'll come to this

  1313. table together.

  1314. Jesus, what an

  1315. amazing gift that

  1316. you would come not

  1317. merely to a woman

  1318. in Samaria, but to

  1319. people like us who

  1320. don't deserve any

  1321. more to know you,

  1322. to walk with you,

  1323. to taste of your

  1324. love, and you would

  1325. make us worthy.

  1326. You would give us

  1327. life.

  1328. You would give us

  1329. water when we're

  1330. thirsty.

  1331. Might we know that

  1332. even as these common

  1333. elements of bread,

  1334. wine, juice, as we

  1335. consume them, would

  1336. you fill us?

  1337. Would you quench our

  1338. thirst and would you

  1339. remind us where to

  1340. turn for water that

  1341. lasts forever?

  1342. forever?

1343. We ask it in your

  1344. name.

  1345. Amen.

  1355. cheers.

  1356. Thank you.
