  1. You are listening to a message from Southwood Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama.

  2. Our passion is to experience and express grace.

  3. Join us.

  4. We're back in John's gospel this morning where he records for us encounters with Jesus.

  5. People who engage with Jesus and we get to see about that, John tells us, so that we

  6. might believe, so that we might have life, that we might find that abundant, eternal,

  7. life-giving relationship with Jesus.

  8. Our passage this morning is another sign, John tells us, of who Jesus is that it might

  9. strengthen our faith in him.

  10. It follows Jesus' encounter with the Samaritan woman at the well where Jesus agrees to

  11. stay two days with the reject Samaritans who are embracing him as the Messiah.

  12. And now he's on the move north again, back towards home base in Galilee.

  13. John 4 at verse 43.

  14. After two days, he departed for Galilee.

  15. For Jesus himself had testified that a prophet has no honor in his hometown.

  16. So when he came to Galilee, the Galileans welcomed him, having seen all that he had done in Jerusalem

  17. at the feast.

  18. For they too had gone to the feast.

  19. So he came again to Cana in Galilee where he had made the water wine.

  20. And at Capernaum there was an official whose son was ill.

  21. When this man heard that Jesus had come from Judea to Galilee, he went to him and asked him

  22. to come down and heal his son for he was at the point of death.

  23. So Jesus said to him, unless you see signs and wonders, you will not believe.

  24. The official said to him, sir, come down before my child dies.

  25. Jesus said to him, go, your son will live.

  26. The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him and went on his way.

  27. And as he was going down, his servants met him and told him that his son was recovering.

  28. So he asked them the hour when he began to get better.

  29. And they said to him, yesterday at the seventh hour, the fever left him.

  30. The father knew that was the hour when Jesus had said to him, your son will live.

  31. And he himself believed and all his household.

  32. This was now the second sign that Jesus did when he had come from Judea to Galilee.

  33. Thus far, God's holy word.

  34. And I want to make one general observation about God's word as we get started.

  35. Because it has become increasingly popular these days to believe that these biblical accounts we read are accounts of Jesus made up by his followers after his life.

  36. You know, Jesus didn't really perform miracles.

  37. Many say, come on.

  38. In fact, he didn't even claim divine authority himself, people will tell you.

  39. His disciples made these things up.

  40. I'm sure that some of you here this morning believe that.

  41. That that's how you understand these accounts.

  42. And I want to address that briefly in light of this passage.

  43. Because it's really significant when you talk about such a historically influential person as Jesus.

  44. With the significant claims that he makes.

  45. That you know if you're actually encountering the real Jesus.

  46. Think about the places here that we just read.

  47. Jesus has gone from Galilee.

  48. Down to Jerusalem.

  49. For the Passover.

  50. Where he cleanses the temple publicly.

  51. And then he goes through Samaria.

  52. Back up to Galilee.

  53. To Cana.

  54. Where not long ago at all.

  55. He turned water into wine.

  56. And so a couple towns over.

  57. They've been talking about Jesus.

  58. And what he's been doing.

  59. And everyone seems to be talking about him.

  60. To the point that a man comes 15 or 20 miles.

  61. To ask him to heal his son.

  62. All of this traveling.

  63. And all these signs and wonders.

  64. Within about a 50 mile radius.

  65. Like Huntsville.

  66. Madison.

  67. Decatur.

  68. And some from these towns had come with him.

  69. Down to Jerusalem.

  70. They'd been there for the Passover too.

  71. And they'd seen these things.

  72. And they were telling stories.

  73. They're following this.

  74. Everyone knows what's going on.

  75. Now we know these accounts that we have.

  76. In God's word.

  77. Are written and received.

  78. In the lifetime of at least some eyewitnesses.

  79. To these very events.

  80. And certainly many of their children.

  81. Who've heard these stories.

  82. Maybe their whole lives.

  83. These are publicly witnessed.

  84. Publicly discussed events.

  85. You can't make them up.

  86. Without your account of them being dismissed.

  87. As fiction.

  88. As soon as it's published.

  89. The most reasonable explanation.

  90. For these.

  91. And for how people respond to them.

  92. In faith.

  93. And follow this Jesus.

  94. Is that this account.

  95. Is indeed.

  96. The real Jesus.

  97. That's only one reason.

  98. Right.

  99. To trust God's word.

  100. When we read it.

  101. I'm happy to talk with you about more.

  102. You may have more questions about that.

  103. But it's an important one that our text brings up today.

  104. As Jesus performs another divinely miraculous sign.

  105. See Jesus comes back home.

  106. Specifically where he performed his first public miracle.

  107. What John calls the first sign.

  108. Where he might expect no honor.

  109. Because they know Joseph and Mary's son.

  110. Right.

  111. Everybody knows him.

  112. But here in his hometown.

  113. They're at least surface level excited.

  114. That the hometown boy.

  115. Is a magic man.

  116. He's a miracle worker.

  117. Word is getting around.

  118. Right.

  119. Kind of cool that he's coming back.

  120. And we see they welcome Jesus.

  121. Generally because they like what he can do for them.

  122. They want the signs and wonders.

  123. Jesus realizes.

  124. Jesus.

  125. And we'll see Jesus is not against signs altogether.

  126. Is he?

  127. But he knows it's faulty faith.

  128. To stop at the sign.

  129. Just as we discussed during the baptism earlier.

  130. You don't stop for medical care at the red emergency room sign.

  131. Right.

  132. That's what Jesus is saying in response to the nobleman's plea.

  133. Isn't it?

  134. Verse 48.

  135. This father is desperate.

  136. Right.

  137. His son is dying.

  138. He's heard of Jesus.

  139. He asks for help.

  140. I mean this seems like an easy yes for Jesus.

  141. Right.

  142. But Jesus wants more.

  143. He wants to help him and others.

  144. Not stop at the sign.

  145. He answers this man's prayer.

  146. So to speak.

  147. With a heart level challenge.

  148. About his faith.

  149. You won't come and believe.

  150. Unless I put on a show for you.

  151. And that's a problem.

  152. Jesus is pointing out.

  153. He wants something more for the man.

  154. Why do you come to Jesus?

  155. I think if we're honest.

  156. We can relate to people stopping at the sign.

  157. Can't we?

  158. What are some ways we sometimes want the things that Jesus does for us.

  159. More than we want Jesus himself.

  160. Sometimes I think we too are interested only in the physical healing or provision.

  161. We talk to Jesus only when we're sick or hungry or desperate.

  162. For some of us.

  163. Our relationship with Jesus is primarily about keeping our kids or grandkids in line.

  164. That's why I'm associated with Jesus if I'm honest.

  165. I mean they need some good morals.

  166. Some good community.

  167. Sometimes.

  168. Some of us just want intellectual superiority.

  169. To be able to argue or impress someone.

  170. Or seem like we know more theologically.

  171. Rather than knowing more Jesus personally.

  172. You may have any of those struggles in your own heart.

  173. I'll tell you where I see this struggle the most.

  174. In our community.

  175. Sometimes in my own heart.

  176. We so often want a Jesus who fits into our schedule and life plan.

  177. I call it comfortable Jesus.

  178. We're not interested in going deep with the real Jesus who might disrupt my life.

  179. He might mess with where I live.

  180. Or how much money I make and what I do with it.

  181. Who I spend my time with.

  182. My kids activities.

  183. Their preparation for college.

  184. Maybe for you you feel this sense of Jesus.

  185. Here is my weekly calendar.

  186. There are exactly 36 uncommitted minutes left.

  187. And I promise I'll do with them whatever you want.

  188. Jesus.

  189. With those last 36 minutes.

  190. Have you felt that way?

  191. Jesus I want a church that I can enjoy going to.

  192. And I can make some friends.

  193. I'll even study the Bible a little bit when it's convenient for me.

  194. So I can play church reasonably well.

  195. That'll give me some social credibility.

  196. And I expect you to make my family peaceful.

  197. Because honestly we're pretty decent people.

  198. But if I'm really honest I'm not longing to know you more.

  199. I certainly don't want you changing my life too much.

  200. Unless I ask you specifically.

  201. And then maybe something extreme.

  202. Friends we sometimes come to Jesus.

  203. Bring our prayers to him.

  204. And we need to hear his reminder.

  205. That we are just here for the signs and wonders.

  206. For what he can do for us.

  207. John Calvin says what's happening here in this passage.

  208. Is our heavenly father often does not comply with our prayers in every detail.

  209. But goes to work in an unexpected way to help us.

  210. So that we may learn not to dictate to him in anything.

  211. That we trust him.

  212. Consider why Jesus insisted on going deeper with this man and the others around him.

  213. Can a faulty faith based merely on signs and wonders.

  214. Hold up in a world of suffering?

  215. I mean maybe in this case his son gets healed.

  216. But someone else he loves is going to get sick next.

  217. Right?

  218. Can a faulty faith based merely on signs and wonders be enough when Jesus goes to the cross?

  219. What good will he be to me then?

  220. What's he going to do for me hanging up there?

  221. Where?

  222. Jesus knows that we need to go beyond the signs to the one they point to.

  223. To the person of Jesus himself.

  224. He's helping with that.

  225. So when the nobleman asks again for Jesus to come heal his son.

  226. Jesus says go.

  227. Your son lives.

  228. The man takes Jesus at his word doesn't he?

  229. He believes and goes.

  230. There's certainly a lot in this story about faith.

  231. But this is full faith.

  232. It's confirmed when the son is healed.

  233. The man explains to his family and servants what Jesus has done.

  234. And they all believe full faith what Jesus is working on here in this encounter.

  235. That the reason he pushes back on the man a little bit when he comes.

  236. Is that he wants this full faith that sees where the sign is pointing.

  237. That comes to see the true Jesus for who he really is.

  238. What does this sign point to?

  239. What is it that it's a sign of?

  240. Signs point to something.

  241. What's it telling us about Jesus?

  242. Well anyone who heals serious sickness like this has a lot of power.

  243. Power over creation.

  244. Over the physical realm.

  245. But perhaps there are other doctors with great techniques.

  246. Other magicians with tricks to work such powerful changes.

  247. Jesus wants to be abundantly clear when he heals this boy.

  248. He heals how?

  249. With a word?

  250. Immediately?

  251. Just at that time?

  252. From a distance?

  253. Miles and miles away?

  254. There is no one who does this.

  255. This is not just power.

  256. This is God-like power.

  257. This is like the God who created the universe by the word of his power.

  258. This sign shows Jesus not as a carnival trickster.

  259. Not as a physician with newfangled methods.

  260. But as God himself ordering molecules and healing people with a word.

  261. Further, I think this sign points to the fact that Jesus cares and is powerful not just when he's physically present.

  262. Why is that important?

  263. How important is that going to be for Jesus' followers when he returns to his father in just a couple of years?

  264. And he's not there with them in that way anymore.

  265. He's not physically with this boy they've never met.

  266. But Jesus cares.

  267. And Jesus can heal.

  268. Do you see how Jesus is taking care to push the man toward what matters most?

  269. Yes, Jesus heals his son's body.

  270. But Jesus is also healing the hearts of the whole household.

  271. Jesus demonstrates for the man not what he asks for, but what he most needs.

  272. To know who Jesus really is.

  273. So much more than a magic miracle worker who can fix something for him every once in a while.

  274. No, no, no, a God who cares deeply.

  275. Who rules supremely over all creation.

  276. Who can be trusted implicitly.

  277. Even, even when he doesn't do what you ask him to do.

  278. So that we would always come to him no matter what.

  279. No matter what our need is.

  280. No matter how we feel that we could come to him.

  281. John Bunyan who wrote Pilgrim's Progress once said,

  282. I was driven to such straits that I must of necessity go to Jesus.

  283. And if he had met me with a drawn sword in his hand.

  284. I would sooner have thrown myself upon the edge of his sword.

  285. Than have gone away from him.

  286. For I knew him to be my last hope.

  287. I would sooner have thrown myself on Jesus' sword.

  288. Because no one else could I trust like him.

  289. Is that the way you come to Jesus?

  290. Not for the things that he can do for you.

  291. For how good he promises to make it all right away.

  292. But in fact regardless of what he does.

  293. For himself.

  294. For the fact that he's the only one you can even hope to trust completely.

  295. Because he is the true God that you can take at his word.

  296. His powerful, life-changing, hope-breathing word.

  297. That's what this sign shows us about Jesus.

  298. Okay, I want to apply this in two ways.

  299. Two ways as we think about this.

  300. Both of them thinking about what it looks like

  301. when we come to Jesus and believe him to be who he really says he is.

  302. The God that this sign shows him to be.

  303. The God we can take at his word.

  304. And first, and this is a bit harder.

  305. I want to think specifically of times when God doesn't answer your prayer

  306. the way you want right away.

  307. I would ask for a show of hands when that's happened for you

  308. but we all know that's all of us.

  309. I don't know if you've picked up on this lately.

  310. From people you know.

  311. Maybe those of you who pay close attention to the prayer guide.

  312. There are a lot of hard physical illnesses

  313. in this church family right now.

  314. A lot.

  315. There are more hard situations that can't be printed.

  316. You believe that.

  317. I hate the ravages of cancer.

  318. Of mental illness.

  319. Of death.

  320. And we typically do not have in those situations

  321. a direct promise from Jesus

  322. like the one this noble official got.

  323. Your son will live.

  324. Usually we don't have that.

  325. Many of us are right now

  326. where all of us have been

  327. at some time

  328. when immediate miraculous healing does not come.

  329. When God doesn't answer my prayer right away.

  330. when cancer or miscarriage

  331. or other tragedy strikes

  332. and my world is turned upside down

  333. and I'm crying out.

  334. I've been there.

  335. What does this look like in our lives

  336. when we come to Jesus

  337. not just for the sign.

  338. We may not have that yet.

  339. But for who he really is.

  340. If he's really working that kind of faith in us

  341. what does that look like?

  342. A couple things we see in this story.

  343. Twice interestingly

  344. Jesus does not grant

  345. the request of the nobleman

  346. for him to come with him

  347. and heal his son.

  348. Friends keep asking.

  349. Keep praying.

  350. Like the persistent widow

  351. you're praying to a powerful

  352. and personal God.

  353. He cares.

  354. Unlike the unjust judge

  355. he doesn't delight

  356. in scorning his children.

  357. Keep praying.

  358. But seeing Jesus also enables us

  359. to live

  360. by faith.

  361. Jesus doesn't do

  362. what the nobleman asks

  363. but

  364. the nobleman does

  365. what Jesus asks.

  366. He goes home

  367. and believes

  368. the word

  369. of Jesus.

  370. even when we

  371. when we don't have

  372. the sign in hand yet

  373. when we don't

  374. see the answers

  375. when we don't

  376. know what God's up to

  377. we can keep following

  378. this God

  379. worthy

  380. of our trust.

  381. And finally

  382. we can share

  383. with others.

  384. Certainly

  385. this man rejoiced

  386. in his son being healed.

  387. No reason

  388. to downplay that.

  389. But he and his whole

  390. household

  391. believed.

  392. Believed what?

  393. who Jesus was.

  394. They didn't have to believe

  395. about the son

  396. once he was alive.

  397. They knew that.

  398. They believed

  399. Jesus'

  400. divine nature

  401. because the nobleman

  402. shared not only

  403. about his son's healing

  404. but also about

  405. the Savior's power

  406. didn't he?

  407. So you can share

  408. of the goodness

  409. and greatness

  410. of Jesus

  411. while you are still

  412. waiting on the answer.

  413. But only if

  414. you've seen him

  415. beyond the signs.

  416. If it's only about

  417. the thing he's gonna

  418. do for you

  419. then you have to wait

  420. till you have it

  421. but if there's a God

  422. you can trust

  423. in the meantime

  424. you can for your own

  425. heart

  426. and for the hearts

  427. of others

  428. share about him

  429. already.

  430. Do you see

  431. you see why we

  432. must see Jesus

  433. not merely signs

  434. and wonders?

  435. this man receives

  436. his son back

  437. restored to him.

  438. Many of us

  439. have prayed

  440. for ourselves

  441. for those we love

  442. and not seen them

  443. restored to us.

  444. If you're only with

  445. Jesus for the signs

  446. for what he can do

  447. for you

  448. at that point

  449. you're out

  450. right?

  451. there better be

  452. something more

  453. divine power

  454. over death

  455. a divine perspective

  456. beyond time

  457. and the realities

  458. of this life

  459. and this broken world

  460. a divine personal

  461. care for you

  462. that understands

  463. that your heart

  464. can only take

  465. so much.

  466. In fact

  467. sometimes

  468. y'all have taught me this

  469. sometimes

  470. it's when we

  471. don't get

  472. our prayers

  473. answered

  474. the way we want

  475. and the timing

  476. we want

  477. that we learn

  478. to cling

  479. to God's

  480. eternal healing

  481. isn't it?

  482. That we learn

  483. to hope

  484. in a fresh way

  485. in a world

  486. with no more

  487. death

  488. or tears

  489. and put our stake

  490. there

  491. more than here.

  492. We learn

  493. to treasure

  494. a God

  495. in a way

  496. we never have

  497. before

  498. a God

  499. who right now

  500. shares our griefs

  501. and one day

  502. wipes away

  503. our tears.

  504. Friends

  505. not having

  506. that direct

  507. promise

  508. is hard.

  509. Living by faith

  510. is hard.

  511. We are praying

  512. with you

  513. and for you

  514. your God

  515. is with you

  516. and for you.

  517. In fact

  518. second application

  519. consider what it

  520. means to take

  521. God

  522. at his word

  523. with the promises

  524. that he has

  525. given us.

  526. This is a preacher

  527. trick.

  528. I said two applications

  529. this one has

  530. like 34.

  531. Okay

  532. so all in

  533. the second one

  534. get excited.

  535. The pro

  536. all

  537. think of all

  538. the promises

  539. way more than

  540. 34

  541. that we don't

  542. have

  543. specifically

  544. for all

  545. of those

  546. promises

  547. we wish

  548. we knew

  549. there are so

  550. many promises

  551. that we do

  552. have

  553. and that we

  554. must embrace

  555. that we can

  556. absolutely

  557. take

  558. to the bank

  559. because of the

  560. power of

  561. God's word.

  562. Let me just

  563. mention a few

  564. see if

  565. your heart

  566. needs

  567. to embrace

  568. one of these

  569. this morning.

  570. some of us

  571. really battle

  572. with doubts

  573. about our

  574. salvation.

  575. Hear the words

  576. of Jesus

  577. truly truly

  578. I say to you

  579. whoever

  580. hears my word

  581. and believes

  582. him who sent

  583. me has

  584. eternal life

  585. has passed

  586. from death

  587. to life

  588. whoever believes

  589. in Jesus

  590. is not

  591. condemned.

  592. In fact

  593. Jesus

  594. promises

  595. this is the

  596. will of my

  597. father that

  598. everyone who

  599. looks on the

  600. son and

  601. believes in

  602. him should

  603. have eternal

  604. life and

  605. listen to your

  606. savior I

  607. will raise

  608. him up on

  609. the last

  610. day.

  611. Hear the

  612. voice of

  613. your good

  614. shepherd who

  615. laid down his

  616. life for the

  617. sheep and

  618. take Jesus

  619. at his word

  620. today.

  621. Many of us

  622. have been

  623. praying for

  624. years and

  625. years for

  626. our kids

  627. and our

  628. hearts ache

  629. for the

  630. wayward

  631. adult

  632. children that

  633. we still

  634. love so

  635. much

  636. that seems

  637. God doesn't

  638. do anything.

  639. God would

  640. have you

  641. remember what

  642. you saw this

  643. morning in the

  644. sacrament of

  645. covenant

  646. baptism.

  647. I will

  648. establish my

  649. covenant an

  650. everlasting

  651. covenant.

  652. I will

  653. be God

  654. to you.

  655. I will be

  656. God to your

  657. children after

  658. you.

  659. I will be

  660. their God.

  661. He hasn't

  662. left them.

  663. He hasn't

  664. given up on

  665. them.

  666. Keep asking.

  667. I will be

  668. God.

  669. I will be

  670. God.

  671. I will be

  672. God.

  673. I will be

  674. God.

  675. Perhaps some

  676. of us have

  677. thought I've

  678. got this

  679. struggle that I

  680. live with every

  681. day and it's

  682. really heavy and

  683. I'd like to share

  684. it with someone but

  685. it's just too big

  686. or too bad to

  687. share with my

  688. pastor or my

  689. grace group.

  690. In fact,

  691. well honestly it's

  692. too bad for

  693. Jesus to forgive

  694. me.

  695. I just carry it

  696. around every day

  697. fearfully.

  698. I'm exhausted.

  699. Jesus says all

  700. that the

  701. Father gives me

  702. will come to

  703. me and

  704. whoever comes

  705. to me I

  706. will never

  707. cast out.

  708. Whoever

  709. comes I

  710. will never

  711. cast out.

  712. Try him.

  713. Take him at

  714. his word.

  715. Some of us are

  716. sitting here this

  717. morning frantic,

  718. worried,

  719. wondering how

  720. we're going to

  721. make ends meet

  722. even this week.

  723. Jesus says all

  724. these things,

  725. all these things

  726. will be added to

  727. you.

  728. Don't worry,

  729. he says.

  730. In fact, we

  731. read this week in

  732. our Bible reading

  733. plan from

  734. Philippians 4,

  735. my God will

  736. supply every

  737. need of yours,

  738. every need of

  739. yours according to

  740. his glorious

  741. riches in Christ

  742. Jesus.

  743. Jesus.

  744. I know because

  745. we've been

  746. talking about

  747. sharing our

  748. faith so much

  749. lately that some

  750. of us feel

  751. totally inadequate,

  752. absolutely

  753. unconvinced that

  754. we could point

  755. someone else to

  756. Jesus.

  757. Listen to his

  758. promise as we

  759. come to him,

  760. as we follow him,

  761. he says,

  762. I will make you

  763. become fishers

  764. of men.

  765. You come to

  766. Jesus,

  767. you rest in his

  768. divine nature

  769. and power

  770. and he promises

  771. living in him,

  772. with him,

  773. you will bear

  774. fruit.

  775. He does that

  776. in you.

  777. Most of us know

  778. what it's like to

  779. feel alone.

  780. It's all up to me

  781. and my resources

  782. and strength

  783. every day or

  784. honestly,

  785. no one cares

  786. about me

  787. or notices me.

  788. Jesus says,

  789. behold,

  790. I am with you

  791. always

  792. to the end

  793. of the age.

  794. In fact,

  795. Jesus is so

  796. committed

  797. to never leaving

  798. you or forsaking

  799. you that when

  800. he does return

  801. to his father,

  802. he sends to you

  803. his spirit

  804. to dwell in you.

  805. If I go,

  806. I will send

  807. him to you.

  808. He has not

  809. left you alone.

  810. He has not

  811. left you alone.

  812. I promise

  813. I won't do

  814. 34,

  815. but I got more.

  816. I've talked

  817. with young

  818. and old

  819. in this church

  820. who struggle

  821. to feel

  822. that it's really

  823. true

  824. that Jesus

  825. is more valuable

  826. than the things

  827. of this world

  828. that are right

  829. there in front

  830. of them

  831. every day.

  832. They feel

  833. more real,

  834. more impactful

  835. so often

  836. in our lives.

  837. how can I

  838. give up

  839. comfort

  840. or friends

  841. or success

  842. to have

  843. Jesus?

  844. Jesus promises

  845. everyone who

  846. has left

  847. houses

  848. or brothers

  849. or sisters

  850. or father

  851. or mother

  852. or children

  853. or lands

  854. for my name's

  855. sake

  856. will receive

  857. a hundredfold

  858. and will inherit

  859. eternal life.

  860. Jesus promises

  861. that true life,

  862. abundant life,

  863. eternal life

  864. comes from him

  865. and actually

  866. consists in

  867. knowing him

  868. that that's

  869. where life is.

  870. Will you keep

  871. trusting your feelings

  872. or will you

  873. take God

  874. at his word?

  875. It's not just

  876. that we sometimes

  877. feel exhausted

  878. and overwhelmed

  879. when we're

  880. following Jesus

  881. but it's easy

  882. to feel that

  883. that's the way

  884. it should be.

  885. Jesus promises

  886. again

  887. as we come

  888. to him

  889. I will

  890. give you

  891. rest.

  892. In fact

  893. when you are

  894. weak

  895. when you are

  896. at your lowest

  897. he promises

  898. his grace

  899. is sufficient

  900. which means

  901. you don't have

  902. to be.

  903. Do you believe

  904. that?

  905. all right

  906. just one more

  907. for now.

  908. Many of us

  909. wonder

  910. about what's

  911. after this

  912. life.

  913. We fear death

  914. uncertain

  915. unknown.

  916. Jesus

  917. understands

  918. that these

  919. concerns

  920. trouble our

  921. hearts

  922. and he speaks

  923. to us

  924. let not

  925. your hearts

  926. be troubled.

  927. Believe in

  928. God

  929. believe also

  930. in me.

  931. In my

  932. father's

  933. house

  934. are many

  935. rooms

  936. if it

  937. were not

  938. so

  939. would I

  940. have told

  941. you

  942. that I

  943. go

  944. to

  945. prepare

  946. a place

  947. for you

  948. and if

  949. I go

  950. and prepare

  951. a place

  952. for you

  953. I will

  954. come

  955. again

  956. and will

  957. take

  958. you

  959. to

  960. myself

  961. that

  962. where I

  963. am

  964. you may

  965. be

  966. also.

  967. The

  968. God

  969. who

  970. spoke

  971. and

  972. fifteen

  973. miles

  974. away

  975. molecules

  976. reorder

  977. viruses

  978. obey

  979. a

  980. dying

  981. boy

  982. is

  983. healed

  984. he

  985. promises

  986. you

  987. that he's

  988. coming

  989. back

  990. for you

  991. to take

  992. you to

  993. be with

  994. him

  995. where he

  996. is

  997. forever.

  998. So many

  999. glorious

  1000. promises

  1001. from this

  1002. God that

  1003. we can

  1004. take

  1005. at his

  1006. word

  1007. that we

  1008. must

  1009. take

  1010. at his

  1011. word.

  1012. I'm not

  1013. suggesting

  1014. please hear

  1015. me

  1016. that

  1017. these

  1018. magically

  1019. remove

  1020. all

  1021. struggles.

  1022. That's

  1023. not the

  1024. point.

  1025. But I

  1026. pray that

  1027. one or

  1028. two for

  1029. you would

  1030. build your

  1031. faith

  1032. in a

  1033. God you

  1034. can

  1035. trust.

  1036. As we

  1037. close this

  1038. morning I

  1039. want to

  1040. talk one

  1041. more time

  1042. especially to

  1043. those who

  1044. are hurting

  1045. for yourself

  1046. for those

  1047. you love

  1048. who are

  1049. longing to

  1050. receive

  1051. healing

  1052. from Jesus

  1053. like the

  1054. nobleman

  1055. and his

  1056. son in

  1057. this story

  1058. you want

  1059. that to

  1060. be your

  1061. story.

  1062. Living by

  1063. faith and

  1064. not right

  1065. now by

  1066. sight is

  1067. hard.

  1068. Trusting God

  1069. when it

  1070. doesn't seem

  1071. to be

  1072. working out

  1073. is difficult.

  1074. it should

  1075. not be

  1076. done alone.

  1077. But I

  1078. want to

  1079. encourage you

  1080. I want to

  1081. encourage you

  1082. by reminding

  1083. you that

  1084. Jesus

  1085. the God

  1086. of the

  1087. Bible

  1088. the God

  1089. you can

  1090. trust

  1091. not merely

  1092. because he's

  1093. powerful

  1094. and his

  1095. word is not

  1096. bound by

  1097. time or

  1098. space and

  1099. it transforms

  1100. molecules and

  1101. hearts.

  1102. Praise the

  1103. Lord that is

  1104. true.

  1105. But especially

  1106. he's a God

  1107. you can trust

  1108. because he's

  1109. a God who

  1110. entered our

  1111. pain.

  1112. Knowing our

  1113. great need

  1114. that we were

  1115. dying in

  1116. our rebellion

  1117. in our

  1118. brokenness

  1119. knowing that

  1120. we didn't have

  1121. the strength

  1122. to hold on

  1123. to him

  1124. he grabbed

  1125. hold of us

  1126. and would

  1127. not let go.

  1128. He cared

  1129. about us so

  1130. much that he

  1131. entered this

  1132. world faced

  1133. temptation

  1134. endured rejection

  1135. had his

  1136. body

  1137. racked

  1138. with agony

  1139. even tasted

  1140. death

  1141. because of

  1142. his great

  1143. love

  1144. for us.

  1145. He says

  1146. that he is

  1147. with you

  1148. and for

  1149. you

  1150. he is.

  1151. He promises

  1152. a future

  1153. without

  1154. pain

  1155. or death

  1156. or tears

  1157. you can

  1158. count on

  1159. it.

  1160. He tells

  1161. you to

  1162. trust him

  1163. today.

  1164. You can

  1165. take him

  1166. at his

  1167. word.

  1168. Let's pray.

  1169. Jesus for

  1170. all the

  1171. things that

  1172. you have

  1173. given us

  1174. that we

  1175. can hold

  1176. on to

  1177. as we

  1178. cling to

  1179. you

  1180. we give

  1181. you thanks.

  1182. We confess

  1183. the feebleness

  1184. of our

  1185. faith.

  1186. How quickly

  1187. the circumstances

  1188. of our lives

  1189. and the

  1190. temptations

  1191. around us

  1192. make us

  1193. forget

  1194. and not

  1195. trust

  1196. what you

  1197. have told

  1198. us.

  1199. Thank you

  1200. for loving

  1201. us.

  1202. Thank you

  1203. for coming

  1204. for us.

  1205. Thank you

  1206. for never

  1207. letting us

  1208. go.

  1209. Give us

  1210. hope in

  1211. you today.

  1212. Build our

  1213. faith

  1214. that it

  1215. might stand

  1216. strong

  1217. in the

  1218. tests of

  1219. this life

  1220. that it

  1221. might overflow

  1222. from us

  1223. to others

  1224. who are

  1225. hurting.

  1226. Thank you

  1227. for giving

  1228. us faith

  1229. and being

  1230. with us

  1231. by your

  1232. spirit.

  1233. In your

  1234. name we

  1235. say it.

  1236. Amen.
