  1. You are listening to a message from Southwood Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama.

  2. Our passion is to experience and express grace.

  3. Join us.

  4. Amen.

  5. Good morning, everybody.

  6. For those of you who may not remember, our senior pastor, Will, is in India, and he is

  7. doing very well in India.

  8. He actually is preaching this morning, and tomorrow he starts teaching in one of the

  9. conference-type seminary places that we partner with, and then Wednesday he will be a youth

  10. retreat speaker.

  11. That should be interesting.

  12. And he said he appreciates your prayers, and he's very thankful for this place, so I was

  13. texting with him a little bit.

  14. So just an update there.

  15. He is there safely and doing really well.

  16. And I'm privileged to get to lead us this morning.

  17. I'm also privileged to have Skeets lead with me this morning.

  18. Thank you, Skeets.

  19. I love having our elders be a part of leading up here.

  20. It's not easy to do, and I'm just really thankful to have y'all's voices in our lives,

  21. and so we'll get to do that again next week as well.

  22. But let me pray for us this morning before we jump into looking at God's Word together.

  23. Father in heaven, thank you for this time.

  24. Thank you for these wonderful people.

  25. Every face in here is a life and a soul.

  26. And this morning they're going through something, and you've brought them here for something.

  27. May that be your spirit that ministers to me and to us together as we look at your Word

  28. and consider the things that you say.

  29. Thank you, Father.

  30. It's in Jesus' name that I pray these things.

  31. Amen.

  32. Amen.

  33. So, some of y'all know this.

  34. I play music, and I used to play a lot more than I do now.

  35. And, like, there's this particular place in Birmingham called Work Play Theater,

  36. and there was this guy there who ran the sound.

  37. And his name is Davey, okay?

  38. And Davey is one of the men who you meet and you are like, am I a man?

  39. Okay?

  40. Because he is so very manly man.

  41. And when he talks, he talks like this!

  42. And Davey is one of the scariest men that I ran into for quite some time.

  43. And so I would show up to play these concerts, and I got to know Davey, and I would get sometimes

  44. a little intimidated by him, but I kept, he was on my heart, like I wanted to talk to Davey.

  45. I wanted to interact with Davey.

  46. But he was cold.

  47. He didn't really want to talk to me.

  48. And most of the time he could be misinterpreted as kind of mean.

  49. So it became the backdrop to every concert there that I would play at Work Play.

  50. How am I going to talk to Davey?

  51. And so I found myself, though, praying for Davey a lot.

  52. I found myself wanting to encourage him and to listen to his story.

  53. But I didn't really know what to do to get over that hump.

  54. But what I found was I was longing for this doorway to bear witness.

  55. I think that's what was really going on inside my heart.

  56. If you think about that word witness.

  57. Witness is a person who sees an event and they give evidence or proof of that event or that person or that thing.

  58. Bearing witness, then, would be showing that something exists or is true.

  59. It's giving a truthful testimony about what you've seen.

  60. It's speaking honestly about something that is important to you for the purpose of showing that it does exist or that thing is true.

  61. Now, there's a very popular TV show on right now that's about to enter into its fifth season.

  62. And it follows the life of a lucrative estate businessman.

  63. And he's purchased a large ranch in Utah.

  64. It's a 500-acre site previously owned by the government and the site of purported paranormal and UFO-related activities.

  65. Now, the series follows a team of scientists, investigators, and skeptics who have been brought to the ranch to investigate the reports by testing them scientifically.

  66. And the latest investigation led them to a location on the ranch where they've witnessed time being manipulated and gravity not operating normally.

  67. And they speculate that it could be a naturally occurring wormhole.

  68. Okay?

  69. They speculate.

  70. But as they witness and they film these amazing phenomenon, they bear witness about them, providing evidence in an attempt to show that these things indeed exist and are true.

  71. Now, I recently met some friends who worship at a different church in a completely different denomination than we are in.

  72. And when we had them over for dinner, it was fun to hear how they were talking about what their church services are like.

  73. And one of the really wonderful things that they mentioned that they do in each service is that they have a time where people are given opportunities to stand up and bear witness about what God has done and is doing in their lives.

  74. Kind of what we do at the Thanksgiving service that Kelly mentioned.

  75. And at our meal, when they were over at our house, they were doing that very thing as they told us about how God had delivered them from some really, really tough circumstances in their lives and how he's still at work in their family.

  76. They were giving truthful testimony about what they've seen and experienced.

  77. And so, as I was walking and praying about these scriptures today and thinking through this and praying through it, I started to notice these things around me that I had never noticed when I was walking before.

  78. In a different way.

  79. It's just interesting as I was praying about it.

  80. So, at first, I looked up and I was like, wow, that's really heavenly.

  81. That's really, really beautiful.

  82. And these things, to me, as I looked, I started to notice them crying out, God, God, God.

  83. There was this little anthill that was made from all of the leftovers from the, all these leftovers from the clippings from the grass that was cut.

  84. And these little creatures that God created, they make a home.

  85. Then I looked out and I saw this.

  86. I didn't know what that was.

  87. I got closer and it was that.

  88. And if you get closer, it's that.

  89. It's amazing.

  90. And I'm like, God did that.

  91. God created the thing that created that thing.

  92. And it bears witness to God.

  93. And then there was this beautiful bird.

  94. I mean, that looks like something out of Jurassic Park.

  95. But it's amazing.

  96. And it was just this blue that even, that doesn't even capture it.

  97. It's like a beautiful piece of art that I was looking at.

  98. And then there's ducks.

  99. Have you just thought about ducks?

  100. They're like paddle boat animals.

  101. Like if a paddle boat could have fur on, that's all they do.

  102. And they sit there and they talk to each other.

  103. But if you know what's going on underneath the surface there, it's amazing what ducks are.

  104. And if you look today in our passage that we're going to look at briefly together, what we're really learning about is bearing witness.

  105. Okay?

  106. A witness that proclaims that Christ really is God.

  107. Okay?

  108. They're providing evidence, this passage today, to show that God exists and that God is true.

  109. And so Jesus is going to tell us what he thinks about all that.

  110. And in the verses just before these verses, we learn, remember last week, why the Jews are seeking to kill Jesus.

  111. Because not only had he just healed a man at the pool at Bethesda on the Sabbath, which they said was sin, because it was work.

  112. But he was also now calling God his own father.

  113. And he was making himself equal with God.

  114. And he was pointing to the authority that he himself has to give eternal life.

  115. And then he also had just spoken about right before these verses, the day of judgment.

  116. Okay?

  117. Where all those who have died, everyone who died, he says, will be raised.

  118. Okay?

  119. But not all will be raised to eternal life.

  120. There'll be a resurrection to death and eternal judgment.

  121. And there'll be a resurrection to life.

  122. So all of these precede this verse here.

  123. So now he's going to continue and he's going to shift the focus to witness.

  124. So let's start just by looking at the first five verses.

  125. I can do nothing on my own.

  126. As I hear, I judge.

  127. And my judgment is just.

  128. Because I seek not my own will, but the will of him who sent me.

  129. If I alone bear witness about myself, my testimony is not true.

  130. There is another who bears witness about me.

  131. And I know that the testimony that he bears about me is true.

  132. You sent to John and he is born witness to the truth.

  133. Not that the testimony that I receive is from man, but I say these things so that you may be saved.

  134. He was a burning and shining lamp and you were willing to rejoice for a while in his light.

  135. The first thing that Jesus does here, notice, is he refers to the Jewish law.

  136. Okay.

  137. Not only in the Hebrew culture, but in most every ancient culture, for something to be verified as true in court, there has to be more than one testament.

  138. Okay.

  139. Today you're going to see it in the court system.

  140. What do we have in courts?

  141. Witnesses, right?

  142. Well, in the Jewish courts, if you claim that something was true and you don't have evidence to support it outside of your own testimony or other eyewitnesses, then it fails.

  143. You had to have at least two eyewitnesses.

  144. Okay.

  145. So Jesus knew this and he's speaking their language to them.

  146. Okay.

  147. About himself though.

  148. And he's using the standard of their law.

  149. And he's saying, God has given you evidence, all the evidence that you need to back up the claim that I am God.

  150. That I am who I say that I am.

  151. That I am equal with God, the Father.

  152. And what's the first evidence that he mentions in here?

  153. Who's the first witness that he calls to the stand?

  154. It's John the Baptist.

  155. So witness number one there is John the Baptist.

  156. And he tells us this, that John is a lamp.

  157. So Jesus here is talking about himself.

  158. If you're wondering who Jesus says he is, he's going to tell us in these next verses here.

  159. He describes John first as a burning and a shining lamp.

  160. And he even points to the fact that they believed the things that John said.

  161. And they rejoiced in them for a while.

  162. So Jesus is saying, hey, John was a lamp.

  163. And that's the witness of John.

  164. He was a human who devoted his life to shining a light.

  165. Saying, repent and prepare the way for who?

  166. Jesus.

  167. Now, the handheld lamps of this time, they would have been an oil lamp.

  168. And they only produced a very small amount of light.

  169. Usually about as much as a candle or a big candle.

  170. And though he was a lamp, he's saying he was not the light.

  171. So think about that.

  172. John is a lamp.

  173. He's providing a small amount of light.

  174. Jesus is going to come in and just, right?

  175. Blow the whole thing up.

  176. Turn all the lights on.

  177. So though he was a lamp, he was not the light.

  178. So Jesus then moves on to call another witness to the stand.

  179. And do you know who he calls to the stand next?

  180. It's in your bulletin.

  181. God.

  182. His works, miracles first.

  183. And God the Father.

  184. He's going to put these two together here, okay?

  185. So saying this, and let's read these verses together.

  186. The testimony that I have is greater than that of John.

  187. For the works that the Father has given me to accomplish, the very works that I am doing,

  188. bear witness about me, Jesus, that the Father has sent me.

  189. And the Father who sent me has himself borne witness about me.

  190. His voice you've never heard.

  191. His form you've never seen.

  192. And you do not have his word abiding in you.

  193. For you do not believe the one whom he has sent.

  194. Okay.

  195. If John is a lamp, which he just told us, then Jesus now is the light, the real light.

  196. And God is here.

  197. And so Jesus here is pointing to his miracles first.

  198. Okay.

  199. If you need proof, look at what I'm doing.

  200. And he's been performing them saying they give proof to the realities of the things that he's seen

  201. and who he says he is.

  202. They witness.

  203. And the fact that he and the Father are one.

  204. Remember right before this, the Jews tried to kill him.

  205. And that's because he's bearing witness to these things.

  206. And some people will say to you today, it does not say in the Bible anywhere that Jesus is God.

  207. That is not true.

  208. Okay.

  209. That Jesus never claimed to be God.

  210. That is not true.

  211. You're seeing it right here.

  212. But there's lots of accounts elsewhere where it's right in your face.

  213. But how is Jesus the light?

  214. There's two verses here to look at.

  215. It's really a lot of verses in two slides.

  216. Again, Jesus spoke to them saying,

  217. I am the light of the world.

  218. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.

  219. So the Pharisees said to him,

  220. You are bearing witness about yourself.

  221. Your testimony is not true.

  222. Now remember, this is the same thing Jesus has just been doing.

  223. He knows the whole system there.

  224. And Jesus answered,

  225. Even if I do bear witness about myself,

  226. my testimony is true.

  227. For I know where I came from and where I'm going.

  228. But you do not know where I come from or where I'm going.

  229. You judge according to the flesh.

  230. I judge no one.

  231. Yet even if I do judge, my judgment is true.

  232. For it's not I alone who judge, but I and the Father who sent me.

  233. In your law, it's written that the testimony of two people is true.

  234. I am the one who bears witness about myself.

  235. And the Father who sent me bears witness about me.

  236. Okay, this would have blown their minds, right?

  237. He right now is saying, you do not get it.

  238. I am God.

  239. Okay, he's pointing to Yahweh as bearing witness about him as God.

  240. This would be an astounding claim.

  241. So the Father, you know, in the Trinity,

  242. the Father God sends the Son.

  243. The Son will accomplish the work of salvation,

  244. who then goes back to heaven and sends us who?

  245. God the Holy Spirit.

  246. This is the Trinity.

  247. They are all co-equal in power and glory, though.

  248. Okay, we don't understand this great mystery,

  249. but you see community from the very beginning of existence

  250. in the Godhead.

  251. And if you ever long for community, that's why.

  252. God made you that way.

  253. Community is a good thing, but because of sin,

  254. it's also a very broken thing.

  255. So it's hard.

  256. It's not easy.

  257. But that's why the church is so important.

  258. That's why the church is so worthwhile.

  259. And I don't just mean these walls.

  260. I mean the people of God.

  261. We're supposed to be restoring that brokenness in the world

  262. and those relationships.

  263. One single smile and hug and conversation at a time.

  264. So he's going to send us, though.

  265. He's going to talk about later in John sending us the Holy Spirit.

  266. But we'll probably get to that in the year 3000 at the rate we're going.

  267. So hang on.

  268. So he tells us that nobody has ever heard the Father's voice.

  269. No one has seen his form.

  270. Okay?

  271. Except for who?

  272. What's assumed there?

  273. Jesus.

  274. Right?

  275. He was there in the beginning when the earth had not been fully formed

  276. and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.

  277. This is also what I saw when I was walking.

  278. That just, right?

  279. Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.

  280. And he says that they've never seen the Father except in Jesus.

  281. Now, why not?

  282. He says it's because they don't have his word abiding in them.

  283. Skeets mentioned that earlier.

  284. What does it mean to have the word abiding in us?

  285. And Jesus is saying, if you don't believe me,

  286. you don't believe the one who God has sent.

  287. Then you don't know God.

  288. I am God.

  289. Okay?

  290. Okay, John told you to look out for me.

  291. And here I am doing the miracles, teaching you the truth,

  292. about to die for you, and you don't believe me.

  293. What does that mean to abide in Jesus?

  294. Because we don't want to make that mistake.

  295. I had this friend in high school, and I couldn't drive,

  296. but he would always drive us around.

  297. His name was John Mark Adrian.

  298. And he always had the phrase, abide or don't ride.

  299. And if you did anything outside of his rules in the car,

  300. he would kick you out.

  301. He was known to just drop you off on the side of the road and make you walk.

  302. And most of it had to do with passing gas.

  303. You could not do that in his car.

  304. Okay?

  305. And he would look at people, he would go,

  306. abide or don't ride.

  307. And he was serious.

  308. Well, to abide in Jesus is to believe and to do exactly what he says,

  309. and then to bear witness about that, to shine light, just like John did,

  310. with our lives, to show him to be true,

  311. to provide evidences to those around us in the relationships,

  312. to bear witness about what he's doing in our lives,

  313. to show God to be true.

  314. John is a lamp.

  315. Jesus is a light.

  316. And as we learned earlier in the book,

  317. the light shines in the darkness,

  318. and the darkness has not overcome it.

  319. And now, as Jesus is continuing,

  320. he's going to call another witness to the stand.

  321. And this is a big one.

  322. Scripture.

  323. You search the scriptures

  324. because you think that in them you have eternal life.

  325. And it's they that bear witness about me.

  326. Yet you refuse to come to me that you may have life.

  327. I do not receive glory from people,

  328. but I know that you do not have the love of God within you.

  329. I've come in my Father's name,

  330. and you don't receive me.

  331. If another comes in his own name,

  332. you will receive him.

  333. How can you believe when you receive glory from one another

  334. and do not seek the glory that comes from the only God?

  335. Okay, again, equating himself with God.

  336. Don't miss that.

  337. But this is really important.

  338. Okay, and here's why.

  339. Because Jesus is telling us that scripture is so very, very important

  340. to bear witness about him that he's calling it to the witness stand.

  341. Now, why is that different than the other two witnesses?

  342. They're both meaningful and huge, right?

  343. God himself, miracles, John the Baptist.

  344. But we hold what he's talking about now.

  345. You can look at it.

  346. I can't look at John the Baptist right now.

  347. I can't necessarily see all of Jesus' miracles that he talked about,

  348. but I can read the word, and you can read the word.

  349. That's something that's still with us right here and right now

  350. that he's talking about right then and there.

  351. It means that in this world of chaos, okay,

  352. confusion, fake news, whatever you want to call it,

  353. you have truth to guide you.

  354. The things that it bears witness about and hear are true.

  355. The life, the death, the resurrection of Jesus Christ,

  356. and not only that, the fact that Jesus is coming back, it's all real.

  357. And Jesus is saying all of this to the most educated Bible scholars of the day.

  358. It would be the smartest people that you could talk to about scriptures

  359. out of that time.

  360. And I want you to think about this.

  361. If the most educated Bible scholars of the day could spend so much time

  362. studying and teaching the scriptures that talk about Jesus,

  363. yet completely miss the point and the purpose,

  364. what does that say for us today?

  365. We can make the same mistake, okay?

  366. It's very possible for you to worship Christianity and miss Jesus,

  367. to worship the Bible and miss God himself.

  368. I don't want you or me to make that mistake.

  369. And we have an opportunity to look at our hearts today.

  370. Here God himself is looking in the face of his creation,

  371. and he's saying,

  372. you care more about the glory of man than you do about me.

  373. You use the scriptures that testify about me to your advantage.

  374. You use God as a means to your end.

  375. You twist them to make them say what you want,

  376. and all the while, it's killing you.

  377. Life is standing in front of your face,

  378. and you want to kill it.

  379. Scripture is more than just information, okay?

  380. Scripture is about transformation.

  381. It's how we hear the voice of God.

  382. And if it doesn't transform you,

  383. you should probably stop and ask yourself,

  384. why?

  385. Why does it not transform you?

  386. There's something behind that.

  387. There's something underneath it.

  388. And it might be different for each of you.

  389. Because it's God's inspired word.

  390. It's the sword of the spirit.

  391. And it's the only weapon that Jesus ever used,

  392. if you think about it.

  393. Remember when he was tempted by Satan?

  394. What did Satan use to try to tempt Jesus?

  395. He used the word of God, didn't he?

  396. Mm-hmm.

  397. And what did Jesus do?

  398. He slayed him like a Jedi, right?

  399. He just vanquished him with this.

  400. Well, yeah, you're right.

  401. Scripture says that.

  402. But here's what else it says.

  403. Slam, drop the mic.

  404. Satan runs away, right?

  405. The word made flesh wields those scriptures.

  406. And as we learn in Ephesians,

  407. it's the sword of the spirit.

  408. So don't make the mistake of just getting so busy

  409. that this is another thing you got to do,

  410. that this is just information.

  411. Satan knows this information better than you and I.

  412. Okay?

  413. But we've got to let these scriptures transform us.

  414. This is back to what it means to abide in Jesus.

  415. Right?

  416. It means to abide in his word.

  417. Abide or don't ride.

  418. If we're not in the word

  419. and we're wondering why God isn't at work in our lives

  420. or we don't experience him,

  421. that's where it starts, right there.

  422. Okay?

  423. Start there.

  424. Are you abiding in his word?

  425. It means that in everything,

  426. everything we do,

  427. everything we think about,

  428. every problem we have,

  429. we go back and we search the scriptures.

  430. And then we let the scriptures search us.

  431. And then we let the scriptures lead us.

  432. And in faith,

  433. we take steps to do the things that it says

  434. in every facet of our lives.

  435. And when we're done doing that,

  436. then we do it again.

  437. And the more we do that,

  438. the more we start to conform to Christ

  439. and his word and his principles

  440. and the things that he commands us to do.

  441. And we grow and we become transformed.

  442. And that's all the work of the spirit inside us.

  443. But apart from his word,

  444. what are we listening to for his voice?

  445. Okay?

  446. And I just want to encourage you in that.

  447. If you don't know where to start,

  448. we've got a two-year Bible plan

  449. where you can just read on an app every day.

  450. But I'm going to tell you,

  451. it's easy to get legalists about it

  452. and still see it as information

  453. and forget God.

  454. But it's scripture transforming you.

  455. Okay?

  456. Disciples sit under the authority of their teacher.

  457. In verse 44,

  458. Jesus points out that they cared more about each other

  459. than they did about God.

  460. And when we care more about each other

  461. and our lives and our busyness and everything,

  462. the same thing happens to us.

  463. Okay?

  464. We miss Jesus.

  465. So disciples sit under the authority of their teacher.

  466. And we know our teacher's voice

  467. through this book of his special revelation.

  468. You ever thought about whether or not

  469. you sit under the authority of scripture?

  470. At least this morning you can.

  471. You know who else sits under the authority of scripture?

  472. Angels.

  473. Okay?

  474. Okay?

  475. Consider this verse from Galatians.

  476. I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting him

  477. who called you in the grace of Christ

  478. and are turning to a different gospel.

  479. Not that there's another one,

  480. but there are some who trouble you

  481. and want to distort the gospel of Christ.

  482. But even if we or an angel from heaven

  483. should preach to you a gospel contrary

  484. to the one we preached to you,

  485. let him be accursed.

  486. As we have said before,

  487. so now I say again,

  488. if anyone is preaching to you a gospel

  489. contrary to the one you received,

  490. let him be accursed.

  491. For am I now seeking the approval of man

  492. or of God?

  493. Or am I trying to please man?

  494. If I were still trying to please man,

  495. I would not be a servant of Christ.

  496. Angels sit in submission to scripture.

  497. Can you think of any religion

  498. that bases its context

  499. and its principles upon what an angel said?

  500. Anybody think of one?

  501. Mormonism.

  502. I think Jehovah's Witnesses,

  503. can we throw that in there?

  504. It's been a while.

  505. And it preaches something contrary

  506. to what the scriptures say.

  507. This stuff is very real.

  508. And then there's other things.

  509. It could be,

  510. you can worship TikTok.

  511. Okay?

  512. You can worship anything.

  513. You can put anything in the central core

  514. and receive that information

  515. as the guiding principles of your life

  516. more so than Christ.

  517. But what sits in authority over you?

  518. What is your foundation?

  519. I just want you to consider that.

  520. May our religious lives

  521. not blind us from the God

  522. that is in front of us

  523. every day

  524. and the opportunities

  525. that he gives us to bear witness.

  526. So we can listen to voices each day

  527. as we read his word,

  528. his voice,

  529. and then ask,

  530. would you search me?

  531. Would you lead me?

  532. Will you show me where I'm off?

  533. Will you restore me?

  534. So John is a lamp.

  535. Jesus is the light.

  536. Scripture teaches that Jesus is God.

  537. And now Jesus calls his last witness

  538. to the stand,

  539. Moses.

  540. Do not think that I will accuse you

  541. to the Father.

  542. There is one who accuses you,

  543. Moses,

  544. on whom you set your hope.

  545. Again, man.

  546. For if you believed Moses,

  547. you would believe me,

  548. for he wrote of me.

  549. But if you do not believe his writings,

  550. how will you believe my words?

  551. Moses.

  552. So,

  553. he's telling us here

  554. that Moses is a messenger.

  555. Jesus ends this passage

  556. by appealing to those words

  557. that someone,

  558. that the Jews claim to believe.

  559. So he's using something

  560. that they understand.

  561. But again,

  562. he's pointing out the blindness.

  563. He says,

  564. even Moses was writing about me.

  565. And if you say you believe him

  566. and you don't believe me,

  567. you even really don't believe Moses.

  568. You don't understand

  569. what he was doing.

  570. And he's pointing then later

  571. to the day of judgment

  572. where Moses' words

  573. will be the ones

  574. that condemn them.

  575. Now,

  576. what does that mean?

  577. It means that

  578. because they believe

  579. Moses' words,

  580. yet they chose to

  581. not believe

  582. that they were about Jesus,

  583. that that will be

  584. the very thing

  585. that condemns them.

  586. And it's the law,

  587. remember,

  588. that shows us our sin.

  589. Okay?

  590. But only through Jesus

  591. can we be forgiven

  592. of that sin.

  593. So they're missing

  594. that whole piece.

  595. And this echoes

  596. earlier verse in John 1.

  597. John 1.17 says,

  598. the law was given

  599. through Moses,

  600. but grace and truth

  601. came through Jesus Christ.

  602. So both are necessary,

  603. but one is pointing

  604. necessarily to the other.

  605. So what is grace there?

  606. What is grace?

  607. What does it mean?

  608. Think about this.

  609. To be a people of grace

  610. who experience

  611. sin express it,

  612. which you hear

  613. a lot here.

  614. I think it means this

  615. in a nutshell,

  616. in a very small

  617. secular version

  618. of saying this,

  619. I guess I should say,

  620. not a lot of God language

  621. in this.

  622. I can make mistakes

  623. in front of you,

  624. and you can make mistakes

  625. in front of me,

  626. and it's okay.

  627. Why?

  628. We'll get to the God language now.

  629. Because while we are sinners,

  630. Christ died for us.

  631. He doesn't hold

  632. our sin against us.

  633. So why would I hold

  634. any of your mistakes

  635. against you?

  636. That doesn't mean

  637. we ignore them

  638. or that we say

  639. that they're healthy,

  640. but if you've experienced

  641. the grace of God

  642. in your life

  643. and you've really

  644. been forgiven,

  645. and you're holding

  646. someone else

  647. under your thumb

  648. of condemnation,

  649. you're not getting it.

  650. You're missing the gospel,

  651. and I'm missing the gospel.

  652. Because we're supposed

  653. to be people

  654. of no condemnation.

  655. To live a no condemnation life

  656. means that that worst conversation

  657. you're in right now,

  658. even if it's an unhealthy relationship,

  659. you don't have the right

  660. to condemn them.

  661. Because you don't have the right

  662. to be uncondemned by God

  663. except by His grace.

  664. And we are to share

  665. that grace with the world.

  666. That doesn't mean

  667. don't set boundaries.

  668. I'm not saying

  669. that every relationship

  670. that you're in

  671. that's toxic is a good one,

  672. but if you can't forgive,

  673. then we're missing something.

  674. Because we're supposed

  675. to be able to get to a place

  676. where we can forgive.

  677. Okay?

  678. And we need help

  679. to do it sometimes.

  680. Perhaps what you're missing

  681. is the help to get there

  682. and the work

  683. and the heart work.

  684. But we're supposed

  685. to live no condemnation lives,

  686. and God's sending us now

  687. on this redemption mission

  688. in this great story of grace.

  689. So to experience it

  690. means we go live it.

  691. Okay?

  692. But the best part

  693. of the story

  694. is what's ahead.

  695. Do you know

  696. where you fit

  697. in that story?

  698. Because you today,

  699. if you're here,

  700. you're a part

  701. of God's story of grace

  702. that He's still writing.

  703. And it doesn't have

  704. to be flashy and big.

  705. You don't have

  706. to write the books.

  707. You don't have

  708. to have the big accolades.

  709. God will use you

  710. in the grocery store

  711. if you let Him.

  712. God will use you

  713. at your house

  714. or with your neighbor.

  715. How is He calling you

  716. to express grace

  717. where you are

  718. in the ordinary things of life?

  719. Because that's where

  720. He calls the most of us.

  721. So John is a lamp.

  722. Jesus is the light.

  723. Scripture teaches us

  724. that Jesus is God,

  725. and Moses is a messenger

  726. of that truth,

  727. and we're supposed

  728. to be messengers of it too.

  729. Now here's why

  730. it all matters.

  731. Worship without witness

  732. is not worship.

  733. Worship,

  734. when I say worship,

  735. I don't mean singing

  736. praise songs.

  737. Okay?

  738. I mean Romans 12.1.

  739. Offer your bodies

  740. as living sacrifices,

  741. holy and pleasing to God.

  742. This is your spiritual

  743. act of worship.

  744. Have you done that?

  745. Many of you have,

  746. I'm sure.

  747. Have you asked Him

  748. to save you?

  749. Have you asked Him

  750. to forgive you of your sins

  751. that He offered on the cross

  752. when His blood was given

  753. as a propitiation for you?

  754. Have you accepted that gift?

  755. If you have,

  756. then you say,

  757. I have been crucified

  758. with Christ,

  759. and it's no longer I who live,

  760. but Christ who lives in me.

  761. Holy Spirit,

  762. through me,

  763. going into this world

  764. and bearing witness now.

  765. And you are set apart

  766. as holy

  767. if you are saved.

  768. You're looking to His provision

  769. instead of yours.

  770. Okay?

  771. His life

  772. instead of yours.

  773. No condemnation

  774. in that sense

  775. when you face judgment

  776. one day.

  777. Eternal judgment

  778. will not fall upon you,

  779. but eternal life.

  780. Well,

  781. then you're called

  782. to go talk about the witnesses

  783. and help other people

  784. meet the King,

  785. meet the great mediator.

  786. Okay?

  787. This is where we will find life.

  788. And I'm not meaning

  789. that all of you

  790. have to become

  791. street evangelists,

  792. but do you stop

  793. and look at people?

  794. Do you listen?

  795. Listen,

  796. it's never too late

  797. to turn your life around

  798. from what you're worshiping.

  799. A lot of times

  800. as Christians,

  801. y'all,

  802. we worship God

  803. in our words

  804. and we miss

  805. all of the people

  806. walking around us

  807. every day

  808. who are these opportunities

  809. to just love.

  810. You can bear witness

  811. about God

  812. by saying,

  813. how was your day?

  814. And listening to Him.

  815. Watch where that leads.

  816. Okay?

  817. Is bearing witness

  818. about Jesus

  819. a part of your life.

  820. Worshiping God

  821. without witness

  822. equals consumer Christianity.

  823. Okay?

  824. If you are only coming

  825. and consuming

  826. of God's word

  827. every single week

  828. and doing nothing with it,

  829. it's going to make you miserable.

  830. It's going to make you irritable

  831. and you're going to wonder

  832. where God is.

  833. I don't want you to be there

  834. because we're designed

  835. to be these lamps

  836. shining in the darkness

  837. transformed by the word of God.

  838. Remember Jesus said,

  839. you are salt and light.

  840. You put a lamp on a stand.

  841. We're like cities on a hill.

  842. But if the salt has lost its taste,

  843. what's it good for?

  844. Nothing.

  845. Except to be trampled underfoot

  846. and thrown out.

  847. So every day

  848. God has a purpose for you

  849. and you're going to find it.

  850. I'm going to just encourage you.

  851. When you start to bear witness,

  852. provide evidence

  853. of the things that he's done

  854. in your life

  855. to others,

  856. you will see

  857. a new side of God

  858. and you will see

  859. a new depth in your soul

  860. that makes church itself

  861. even different.

  862. Let me ask you this.

  863. Consider this.

  864. How many sermons

  865. have you heard

  866. in your life

  867. if you totaled it up

  868. in hours?

  869. What are you doing

  870. with that information?

  871. Because

  872. you're supposed

  873. to be doing something

  874. with it.

  875. We get a lot

  876. of great food

  877. at the church

  878. every week.

  879. Are you going

  880. and sharing it

  881. with anybody?

  882. Because when you do,

  883. you will find

  884. something happens.

  885. God becomes bigger.

  886. But it starts

  887. where you are.

  888. Okay?

  889. And what are we

  890. bearing witness about?

  891. that Jesus

  892. is who he says he is.

  893. That he offers

  894. the true meaning

  895. of life and existence

  896. that we're searching for

  897. and so many other things

  898. and that he is the God

  899. that we're all seeking.

  900. The God who created

  901. the universe.

  902. We disobeyed him

  903. and then brokenness

  904. of sin

  905. and death

  906. and condemnation

  907. entered the world

  908. and that's the reason

  909. why things are so

  910. messed up today.

  911. And death

  912. holds us in fear.

  913. And that's the reason

  914. why we are so scared

  915. to talk.

  916. And we become

  917. worshipers of self

  918. and life

  919. and pleasure

  920. but God

  921. sent his son

  922. to undo the mess

  923. and set things straight

  924. to fix it all.

  925. And Jesus

  926. being crucified

  927. for your sins

  928. and having then

  929. paid that penalty

  930. of death

  931. on our behalf

  932. on the cross

  933. as he said he would.

  934. If we look to him

  935. and we put all things

  936. in submission to him

  937. and we ask him

  938. for forgiveness

  939. from our sins

  940. he promises

  941. that we'll be raised

  942. to eternal life.

  943. You have that truth

  944. to take

  945. to the world

  946. to bear light

  947. in everything

  948. that you do

  949. because he took

  950. that judgment already

  951. you can go out

  952. into the world

  953. and you don't have

  954. to create judgment.

  955. And not only that

  956. there's four chapters

  957. of the gospel

  958. it's not just

  959. sin and redemption

  960. there's creation

  961. and restoration.

  962. Creation,

  963. fall,

  964. redemption,

  965. restoration.

  966. Because he created

  967. the world

  968. he's going to

  969. recreate it

  970. but he's doing it

  971. right now

  972. through you.

  973. So now that you

  974. got your fire insurance

  975. from hell

  976. that's just

  977. the two chapter gospel.

  978. If you forget

  979. the whole purpose

  980. of what you do

  981. with it

  982. you miss it.

  983. And Jesus

  984. standing right there

  985. in front of us

  986. saying don't miss me.

  987. Okay?

  988. Don't read the scriptures

  989. get your salvation

  990. go home

  991. and miss me

  992. in the process.

  993. Alright.

  994. Now I've learned

  995. a lot about

  996. witness.

  997. If you want

  998. a practical

  999. example of witness

  1000. has anyone met

  1001. Adriana Clark?

  1002. She loves peacocks

  1003. and if you are

  1004. around her

  1005. you know it.

  1006. Why?

  1007. Because they're

  1008. the most incredible

  1009. bird ever.

  1010. And if to be

  1011. a friend of Adriana

  1012. is to know

  1013. that she loves

  1014. peacocks

  1015. and I didn't

  1016. care about peacocks

  1017. until I met Adriana

  1018. now I love them

  1019. because she told me

  1020. how much she

  1021. loves peacocks.

  1022. Witness is

  1023. simply that.

  1024. People see

  1025. God at work

  1026. in our lives

  1027. we talk about it

  1028. and they eventually

  1029. start to ask

  1030. questions.

  1031. Are you doing

  1032. that?

  1033. Where do you

  1034. start?

  1035. Right?

  1036. How might

  1037. what you love

  1038. be a doorway

  1039. for that witness?

  1040. So think about

  1041. this metaphor.

  1042. If I wanted

  1043. to lose weight

  1044. and I never

  1045. exercised

  1046. it wouldn't be

  1047. a very effective

  1048. weight loss

  1049. program.

  1050. but weight

  1051. loss without

  1052. exercise

  1053. is not

  1054. weight loss.

  1055. In the same

  1056. way

  1057. if

  1058. you wanted

  1059. to lose

  1060. weight

  1061. I wouldn't

  1062. encourage you

  1063. to start

  1064. by running

  1065. a marathon

  1066. but rather

  1067. to start

  1068. small

  1069. with a walk

  1070. or a run

  1071. or just

  1072. to change

  1073. one little

  1074. habit each

  1075. day.

  1076. Over time

  1077. you would

  1078. see a

  1079. difference.

  1080. The same

  1081. is true

  1082. about bearing

  1083. witness.

  1084. It takes

  1085. time

  1086. it takes

  1087. intentionality

  1088. and you

  1089. got to

  1090. start

  1091. small.

  1092. Okay?

  1093. So here's

  1094. my encouragement

  1095. to you.

  1096. If you're

  1097. like I want

  1098. this to be

  1099. a part of

  1100. my life

  1101. and it's

  1102. not,

  1103. great.

  1104. Step one

  1105. is identifying.

  1106. This is not

  1107. a guilt trip.

  1108. I mean

  1109. this is me

  1110. with you

  1111. in this

  1112. learning this

  1113. together.

  1114. But Jesus

  1115. is bearing

  1116. witness about

  1117. himself not

  1118. just to say

  1119. oh now you

  1120. know who I

  1121. am.

  1122. It's to go

  1123. do something

  1124. with that.

  1125. Okay?

  1126. So start

  1127. here.

  1128. Pray.

  1129. Slow down.

  1130. Listen to

  1131. your breath

  1132. as you're

  1133. walking.

  1134. Remember

  1135. the breath

  1136. of Jesus

  1137. that he

  1138. breathed

  1139. upon his

  1140. disciples

  1141. when they

  1142. were scared

  1143. and afraid.

  1144. Imagine

  1145. he's standing

  1146. there with

  1147. his hand

  1148. on your

  1149. shoulder

  1150. and ask

  1151. God to

  1152. help you.

  1153. What do

  1154. you want

  1155. me to do

  1156. God?

  1157. Two,

  1158. listen.

  1159. Read his

  1160. word.

  1161. Listen to

  1162. what it

  1163. says.

  1164. While you're

  1165. doing that

  1166. throughout the

  1167. day,

  1168. start listening

  1169. to the

  1170. conversations

  1171. in your

  1172. own head

  1173. with yourself.

  1174. Okay?

  1175. What's he

  1176. letting you

  1177. hear?

  1178. And then

  1179. what are the

  1180. conversations

  1181. you're hearing

  1182. around you?

  1183. The voices

  1184. around you.

  1185. So pray

  1186. and listen.

  1187. Then look.

  1188. In the same

  1189. way that that

  1190. spider web

  1191. and that

  1192. anthill

  1193. and that

  1194. fog are

  1195. open doors

  1196. to see

  1197. God's glory

  1198. and nature,

  1199. what people

  1200. has he

  1201. placed in

  1202. your path

  1203. as open

  1204. doors to

  1205. bear witness

  1206. for you,

  1207. just where

  1208. you are?

  1209. Ask him

  1210. to show

  1211. you three

  1212. people.

  1213. That's just

  1214. a number

  1215. I'm picking.

  1216. It sounds

  1217. great.

  1218. It's

  1219. Trinitarian.

  1220. Three

  1221. people to

  1222. start

  1223. praying for

  1224. with the

  1225. intention to

  1226. shine the

  1227. love of God

  1228. to them.

  1229. Not the

  1230. intention that

  1231. they end up

  1232. in church.

  1233. We get

  1234. sideways.

  1235. Let's not

  1236. go there.

  1237. The intention

  1238. to do

  1239. nothing,

  1240. ask nothing

  1241. in return,

  1242. but bear

  1243. witness about

  1244. what God's

  1245. done in

  1246. your life.

  1247. Three

  1248. people.

  1249. If

  1250. everyone in

  1251. here just

  1252. had three

  1253. people that

  1254. they were

  1255. bearing

  1256. witness about

  1257. God in,

  1258. wow!

  1259. You know how many

  1260. people are

  1261. impacted in

  1262. Huntsville?

  1263. So pray,

  1264. listen,

  1265. look,

  1266. and then

  1267. speak last.

  1268. After you've

  1269. done all of

  1270. that,

  1271. repeat steps

  1272. one through

  1273. three a hundred

  1274. more times.

  1275. Listen,

  1276. look,

  1277. pray,

  1278. listen,

  1279. look,

  1280. pray,

  1281. listen,

  1282. look,

  1283. pray,

  1284. listen,

  1285. look.

  1286. Then consider

  1287. speaking and

  1288. opening your

  1289. mouth.

  1290. You don't have

  1291. to have all

  1292. the answers

  1293. to everything

  1294. to ask

  1295. somebody how

  1296. they're doing

  1297. and believe

  1298. it or not,

  1299. somebody is

  1300. tuned into

  1301. your frequency.

  1302. They just

  1303. need you to

  1304. start broadcasting.

  1305. Okay?

  1306. So every

  1307. time I tried

  1308. to interact

  1309. with Davey,

  1310. he was cold

  1311. and he didn't

  1312. want to talk

  1313. and he was

  1314. basically mean.

  1315. So it became

  1316. the backdrop

  1317. of all the

  1318. concerts that

  1319. I would play

  1320. in Birmingham

  1321. and I found

  1322. myself continuing

  1323. to pray for

  1324. him and wanting

  1325. to encourage

  1326. him,

  1327. but I

  1328. didn't know

  1329. what to do

  1330. until one

  1331. day I heard

  1332. him say

  1333. that he

  1334. liked cookies

  1335. and from

  1336. that day

  1337. forward for

  1338. about two

  1339. solid years,

  1340. every time

  1341. I played

  1342. a concert,

  1343. I would

  1344. take him

  1345. a cookie

  1346. and I

  1347. didn't say

  1348. anything.

  1349. I would

  1350. just walk

  1351. up to him

  1352. and give

  1353. him a

  1354. cookie

  1355. and then

  1356. walk away

  1357. and he'd

  1358. be like,

  1359. what did

  1360. you give

  1361. me this

  1362. cookie?

  1363. I said,

  1364. this is

  1365. a cookie

  1366. and I'd

  1367. just walk

  1368. off,

  1369. go play

  1370. the show.

  1371. Well,

  1372. at first he

  1373. thought it

  1374. was weird

  1375. and then he

  1376. started to

  1377. talk to me

  1378. and the

  1379. next thing

  1380. I knew

  1381. he would

  1382. invite me

  1383. to sit

  1384. with him

  1385. and I

  1386. would just

  1387. listen and

  1388. I would

  1389. usually just

  1390. talk about

  1391. a cookie

  1392. and then

  1393. he started

  1394. to talk

  1395. about his

  1396. life and

  1397. then I was

  1398. able to

  1399. talk about

  1400. Jesus.

  1401. Fast forward

  1402. to two years

  1403. ago,

  1404. I mean this

  1405. is like 15

  1406. or something

  1407. years,

  1408. I hadn't

  1409. seen the

  1410. guy,

  1411. I ran

  1412. into somebody

  1413. here that

  1414. knew him

  1415. and I

  1416. said,

  1417. hey,

  1418. would you

  1419. tell him,

  1420. would you

  1421. tell Davey,

  1422. I said,

  1423. hey,

  1424. and the

  1425. next time

  1426. they saw

  1427. him,

  1428. they said,

  1429. Davey wanted

  1430. me to tell

  1431. you,

  1432. when are you

  1433. going to

  1434. come back

  1435. here and

  1436. bring him

  1437. another

  1438. cookie?

  1439. We've got

  1440. more than

  1441. a cookie,

  1442. okay,

  1443. to give to

  1444. people.

  1445. So,

  1446. bear witness

  1447. about Jesus

  1448. and just watch

  1449. how it will

  1450. change it.

  1451. Let me pray

  1452. for us.

  1453. We've got a

  1454. Savior.

  1455. Lord Jesus,

  1456. thank you that

  1457. we can call

  1458. upon you

  1459. and that you

  1460. give us the

  1461. good news of

  1462. the gospel.

  1463. We're merely

  1464. beggars showing

  1465. other beggars

  1466. we're to find

  1467. bread.

  1468. I pray that

  1469. you would show

  1470. this congregation

  1471. where you're

  1472. calling them to

  1473. bear witness in

  1474. their lives,

  1475. not out of

  1476. shame or guilt,

  1477. but out of

  1478. joy,

  1479. and that your

  1480. spirit would

  1481. drive them to

  1482. see these

  1483. opportunities,

  1484. to bring these

  1485. to conversations

  1486. into their

  1487. grace groups

  1488. and into their

  1489. communities,

  1490. to bear witness

  1491. about where

  1492. they're hurting,

  1493. but also where

  1494. you're working.

  1495. Lord,

  1496. as you repair

  1497. this world,

  1498. one relationship

  1499. at a time,

  1500. we pray for

  1501. salvation for

  1502. so many that

  1503. don't know you

  1504. and restore

  1505. unto us the

  1506. joy of salvation

  1507. that we may

  1508. overflow.

  1509. And I can't

  1510. wait until we

  1511. get to come

  1512. back next week

  1513. and hear about

  1514. you then

  1515. feeding the

  1516. 5,000 and

  1517. how you overflow

  1518. as well.

  1519. So thank you,

  1520. Lord Jesus.

  1521. We give all this

  1522. to you in worship

  1523. and we thank you

  1524. in Christ's name.

  1525. Amen.
