  1. You are listening to a message from Southwood Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama.

  2. Our passion is to experience and express grace.

  3. Join us.

  4. Everybody getting excited for Christmas?

  5. Yes.

  6. Yes.

  7. Woo, that was an easy answer, right?

  8. Yeah.

  9. Yeah.

  10. This morning, we are going to talk about a Christmas story, okay?

  11. Okay.

  12. About a very tiny person at Christmas named Jesus.

  13. That's right, Zacchaeus.

  14. Zacchaeus, Christmas story about Zacchaeus, right?

  15. Not what you expected?

  16. I know that it's a Christmas story, Zacchaeus' story, because I saw Zacchaeus in a Christmas tree on the way in this morning.

  17. Can you look up there?

  18. You see that?

  19. Did anybody see that in the Christmas tree by the nursery?

  20. Yes.

  21. Yeah.

  22. Yeah.

  23. Zacchaeus climbing up in a Christmas tree.

  24. That's how the story goes, right?

  25. No.

  26. Oh.

  27. Well, you should look for that tree on your way out today, okay?

  28. And Miss Angela gave me a very big book.

  29. Did you know Zacchaeus was a very small person like many of you?

  30. But I have a very big book about this very small person.

  31. That's pretty cool, huh?

  32. We can look at that later.

  33. But I wanted to read Zacchaeus' story from the Bible instead, okay?

  34. Can we do that together?

  35. Do you think some of you, maybe some of you older kids, help me read this story for us?

  36. You want to help us, Cooper?

  37. Let's see.

  38. We'll let you read a couple verses first, okay?

  39. It starts right here.

  40. This is Luke chapter 19.

    Luke 19 chapter mention

  41. You can turn there in your own Bibles if you'd like.

  42. Starting at verse 1.

  43. Just read a couple verses.

  44. I'll help you out.

  45. He entered Jericho.

  46. He entered Jericho and was passing through.

  47. And there was a man named Zacchaeus.

  48. And he was a chief tax collector and was rich.

  49. Very good.

  50. So what that means is that Zacchaeus had gotten a lot of money stealing it from other people.

  51. How do you think they felt about that?

  52. Yeah.

  53. Do you think they liked Zacchaeus very much?

  54. No.

  55. No.

  56. Nobody really liked to be around Zacchaeus.

  57. Okay.

  58. Does somebody else want to read a couple verses?

  59. You want to try for us?

  60. Go ahead, Caroline.

  61. Where do I start?

  62. Right here at and.

  63. And chief tax.

  64. And he was.

  65. And he was seeking to see who Jesus was.

  66. But on account of the crowd, he could not because he was small.

  67. Oh?

  68. In?

  69. In?

  70. In?

  71. Stature.

  72. Stature.

  73. Very good.

  74. So what did he do, Lily?

  75. Can you read at verse 4?

  76. So he ran on ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see him.

  77. For he was about to pass that way.

  78. And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him,

  79. Zacchaeus, hurry up and come down, for I must stay at your house today.

  80. One more.

  81. So he hurried and came down and received him joyful.

  82. So Zacchaeus was excited for Jesus to come to his house.

  83. But what did all those people who didn't like Zacchaeus think?

  84. Were they happy about that?

  85. Should Jesus be with Zacchaeus?

  86. When they saw it, they all grumbled.

  87. He has gone in to be the guest of a man who is a sinner.

  88. And what happened when Jesus got to Zacchaeus' house?

  89. Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord,

  90. Will you read the last verse for us, Cooper?

  91. For the son of the man came to seek and save the lost.

  92. The son of man came to seek and save the lost.

  93. Do y'all like that story?

  94. Who in that story came to seek and find Zacchaeus?

  95. God.

  96. Yeah, Jesus did.

  97. That's right.

  98. When nobody else was looking for Zacchaeus,

  99. Jesus was looking for him, wasn't he?

  100. Have any of y'all ever played hide and seek?

  101. Yes.

  102. Yeah?

  103. Okay.

  104. Y'all pretty good at hide and seek?

  105. Yeah.

  106. I bet some of you are really good hiders, aren't you?

  107. Yeah.

  108. You know what?

  109. On my computer, I have a game of a class dojo.

  110. A hide and seek game?

  111. A dojo.

  112. And it's also like a thing that teachers use in high school.

  113. I go to Challenger Elementary if you don't know that.

  114. That is so helpful.

  115. And you love to play that game, don't you?

  116. And Dojo Islands is the game.

  117. And there's this little board that says hide and seek.

  118. And if you go to it, it starts a game of hide and seek.

  119. You can play hide and seek in person.

  120. You can play hide and seek on the computer at your school.

  121. It is a great.

  122. And I bet, have you ever had a really good spot

  123. and you've stayed there so long

  124. that maybe you started to feel kind of alone

  125. or uncomfortable.

  126. Maybe it got dark.

  127. And you kind of started wanting for somebody to find you

  128. so that you wouldn't be alone anymore.

  129. Yeah.

  130. Yeah.

  131. That's kind of how Zacchaeus felt.

  132. Zacchaeus was feeling alone.

  133. Nobody wanted to be with him.

  134. He was feeling lost.

  135. And he kind of wanted somebody to find him.

  136. Didn't he?

  137. He was looking for Jesus.

  138. And the Bible says Jesus came to seek.

  139. He was the one counting, right?

  140. He came to seek and to save the lost.

  141. He came to find us and rescue us

  142. so that we will never, ever, ever be alone in the dark again.

  143. Isn't that awesome?

  144. That's why Jesus came to be born at Christmas

  145. to seek out Zacchaeus and you and me.

  146. Isn't that wonderful?

  147. I love that Jesus loves us like that.

  148. Can we pray and thank Jesus for that?

  149. Jesus, thank you for how much you love us,

  150. that you never leave us alone,

  151. but you come and you find us no matter where we are.

  152. And we're thankful for that.

  153. And we pray that we would, especially this Christmas,

  154. rejoice that you were born to save us.

  155. Thank you so much.

  156. And we thank you in your name.

  157. Amen.

  158. All right.

  159. Now you can go back to your seats

  160. and get to listen more about Zacchaeus and Jesus

  161. unless you're going to kids' worship.

  162. And if you are, Miss Katie will meet you

  163. just out the back of the sanctuary.

  164. There she is walking right out the back middle

  165. if you're going to kids' worship.

  166. Let all of them make sure they find the right place.

  167. We are discussing this Advent season

  168. why Christmas.

  169. Reasons that Jesus tells us

  170. why he came and was born.

  171. Last week, we saw Jesus came for fulfillment, right?

  172. For fulfillment of all of the Old Testament promises,

  173. the requirements of God's law.

  174. Jesus came to fulfill.

  175. This morning, in that last verse of Zacchaeus' story,

  176. Jesus explains that he came to seek

  177. and to save the lost.

  178. That statement of purpose in coming

  179. is actually here an explanation

  180. of how salvation came

  181. to such an undeserving person as Zacchaeus,

  182. someone you might not have thought

  183. Jesus would come to.

  184. He was a spiritual outsider,

  185. a social outcast.

  186. And how could he become an insider

  187. in Abraham's family?

  188. Finally, this passage says,

  189. because Jesus came

  190. to seek and save lost people

  191. just like him.

  192. That's why I mentioned hide and seek

  193. to the kids.

  194. In some ways, God and people

  195. have been playing this game

  196. for a very long time.

  197. Just think back through the Bible story

  198. with me for a minute, okay?

  199. I'm gonna mention a few stories

  200. where we see this,

  201. people hiding, God seeking.

  202. But you can probably think of others.

  203. You can send them to me later

  204. and tell me all of the good examples

  205. you can think of.

  206. But all the way back in the garden,

  207. this starts.

  208. When sin first enters the world,

  209. what happens?

  210. Adam and Eve, in their sin,

  211. immediately try to hide from God,

  212. don't they?

  213. It's the very nature of sin

  214. to separate us from God.

  215. They try to sow fig leaves

  216. for themselves to cover themselves

  217. and it says they hide among the trees.

  218. But what happens when they're hiding?

  219. God comes

  220. and he asks the first question

  221. recorded in the Bible.

  222. It's in Genesis 3 at verse 9.

  223. What does God say?

  224. Where are you?

  225. You ever played that game with your kids?

  226. And you walk around,

  227. you already know where they are.

  228. Where are you?

  229. Where are you?

  230. God, knowing exactly where Adam and Eve are,

  231. calls them out,

  232. seeks after them,

  233. and so begins a game,

  234. if you will,

  235. that people in God have been playing

  236. to this day.

  237. Hagar is Sarah's servant

  238. who gets run off

  239. in utter despair

  240. after having a child with Abraham.

  241. She is helpless.

  242. She is hopeless.

  243. She is in the wilderness,

  244. face down to the ground

  245. when God comes and finds her,

  246. restores her,

  247. because she says,

  248. he is the God who sees me.

  249. When no one else seemed to see her

  250. or want her

  251. or care about her,

  252. Yahweh did.

  253. David thought he had hidden from God

  254. after committing adultery

  255. with Bathsheba,

  256. murder of Uriah.

  257. It seemed as though his sin

  258. had gone unnoticed.

  259. He'd gotten away with it.

  260. But God sent the prophet Nathan

  261. to David to expose his sin,

  262. eventually to restore him,

  263. rather than leaving him

  264. distant from God,

  265. in his sin,

  266. God comes after him.

  267. Maybe the most famous person

  268. to run distant from God

  269. is the prophet Jonah.

  270. He famously ran the other direction

  271. when God called him

  272. to the Ninevites

  273. and thought he would hide from God

  274. in the belly of a ship

  275. until God chased him down

  276. and sent a storm

  277. and eventually rescued Jonah

  278. by sending what?

  279. A whale

  280. that brought him back

  281. to God's path

  282. to the Ninevites.

  283. The prophet there serving

  284. as a picture of God's people

  285. who had also lost God's heart

  286. to be a light

  287. to the nations.

  288. In fact,

  289. God's people wandered

  290. so far from him

  291. and his design for them

  292. that they were taken

  293. into exile

  294. out of the promised land,

  295. scattered across the Middle East

  296. for decades.

  297. A lot of dark days,

  298. a lot of lost people,

  299. but what did God do?

  300. God came and gathered them again,

  301. didn't he?

  302. He brought them back

  303. from the nations

  304. and he planted them

  305. in Jerusalem again.

  306. Time and time again, see?

  307. The hound of heaven

  308. has pursued his people,

  309. has won them back to himself,

  310. has not let them go.

  311. And all of that

  312. through the whole Old Testament

  313. leads, of course,

  314. to the coming of Jesus,

  315. the first Christmas.

  316. God breaking in

  317. and dwelling among us

  318. so that we can see

  319. most clearly and vividly

  320. that seeking heart of God.

  321. It's actually embodied

  322. as the Son of God himself

  323. lives among us,

  324. among people

  325. who've been so far away

  326. in so many ways.

  327. And we see and we say,

  328. yes, this is what God

  329. is like, isn't it?

  330. God with us.

  331. He's always said

  332. this was what he was like,

  333. that he would seek after us

  334. and be with us.

  335. Yes, God with us, Emmanuel.

  336. And Jesus shows us,

  337. for example,

  338. with the woman at the well.

  339. And we saw this recently

  340. in the Gospel of John,

  341. in her story.

  342. She's not looking for Jesus

  343. at all, is she?

  344. In fact, she would rather

  345. her sin not be exposed

  346. any more than it already is.

  347. She's ashamed of it.

  348. But Jesus gently

  349. and persistently

  350. exposes her,

  351. reveals himself,

  352. and rescues her

  353. and her village

  354. of undeserving Samaritans.

  355. The seeking God

  356. has come as a man

  357. into the darkness

  358. of our world

  359. and our hearts

  360. to look for the lost.

  361. Jesus says, if you will,

  362. ready or not,

  363. here I come.

  364. And the light of the world

  365. shines in

  366. to find us

  367. good news

  368. of great joy

  369. for all people,

  370. a savior,

  371. the light

  372. coming into our darkness.

  373. It keeps happening

  374. with the Apostle Paul

  375. who's hiding from Jesus

  376. in a little bit different way.

  377. He's intentionally hiding

  378. as far away as possible

  379. from Jesus

  380. in his religious zeal,

  381. his obedience

  382. and persecution

  383. of this church.

  384. But Jesus finds Saul

  385. on the road to Damascus

  386. in the midst

  387. of his self-righteous pride.

  388. His pride,

  389. the light shines

  390. and it humbles him

  391. and it saves him

  392. and then sends him

  393. on his mission,

  394. doesn't he?

  395. Zacchaeus is not

  396. the only example

  397. of this hide-and-seek

  398. narrative in God's word.

  399. People keep hiding.

  400. God keeps seeking

  401. and now here at Christmas,

  402. grace keeps winning

  403. in Jesus.

  404. Jesus.

  405. People hide from God

  406. in many different ways,

  407. don't we?

  408. I want you to think

  409. about that for a minute,

  410. what it looks like

  411. in your life.

  412. We were created

  413. to live close

  414. with God.

  415. That's what he made us for,

  416. to know him personally,

  417. to trust him deeply,

  418. to obey him consistently

  419. that this was what life

  420. was to be about.

  421. To know and love him.

  422. It's where we belong,

  423. so to speak.

  424. So being lost, then,

  425. is really any way

  426. and any time

  427. that we are distant

  428. from God.

  429. When you drive around

  430. a city in India,

  431. as I've had opportunity

  432. to do recently,

  433. you can feel

  434. a spiritual darkness.

  435. Everywhere you look,

  436. Hindu temples,

  437. some really big

  438. and fancy,

  439. some as small

  440. as dog houses

  441. with little statues

  442. inside.

  443. Hindu gods

  444. and goddesses,

  445. idols that you can

  446. stop by

  447. and ask for help.

  448. It's easy to assume

  449. when you're there

  450. that their idols

  451. are different from ours.

  452. but when you listen

  453. long enough

  454. to why,

  455. for example,

  456. some of these

  457. Hindus have recently

  458. been persecuting

  459. the Christians

  460. around them,

  461. you'll actually realize

  462. it's not much

  463. about the little statues.

  464. That's really not,

  465. it's not the,

  466. it's not primarily

  467. religious,

  468. their reasons

  469. for doing that.

  470. they're motivated

  471. by a desire

  472. to keep things

  473. in life

  474. the way that they are,

  475. to maintain

  476. their political control,

  477. their social power,

  478. their economic success,

  479. all of those things

  480. so that they can keep

  481. their lives going

  482. the way that they enjoy

  483. and have the things

  484. that they want

  485. so that they can feel

  486. fulfilled.

  487. now those idols,

  488. I'm very familiar

  489. with those.

  490. I recognize them.

  491. I see those same ones

  492. on the streets

  493. of Huntsville.

  494. I'm thinking that

  495. that's where I'm going

  496. to find life

  497. apart from Jesus

  498. by controlling my body

  499. and how I look,

  500. by maintaining

  501. my possessions

  502. and not letting anything

  503. in life that I like

  504. change.

  505. I want life

  506. the way that I want it

  507. and it makes me

  508. feel good,

  509. right?

  510. I know that idol.

  511. We bring those idols

  512. into this sanctuary

  513. on Sundays,

  514. I dare say.

  515. See,

  516. just like some of these

  517. biblical characters

  518. we've talked about,

  519. we can hide from God

  520. in a lot of places.

  521. We can hide from God

  522. in our selfish pursuit

  523. of success,

  524. can't we?

  525. All the while thinking

  526. that what life is about

  527. is actually getting enough

  528. and having life

  529. work well enough

  530. that I'm happy

  531. and significant

  532. and don't really need

  533. to depend on God

  534. or be close to Him

  535. day by day.

  536. Fine if you want to,

  537. but maybe I'll be good enough,

  538. I won't really need that.

  539. We can be lost

  540. or distant from God

  541. in our depression.

  542. perhaps still driven

  543. by our deep shame,

  544. we might despair

  545. of His care,

  546. of His presence with us,

  547. even of His existence.

  548. Many of us regularly hide

  549. from God in our work

  550. and busyness,

  551. don't we?

  552. We're just so caught up

  553. with thinking about other things

  554. and focused on what we're

  555. scrolling through

  556. all of the time,

  557. there's too much else

  558. to think about

  559. to really focus much on Him.

  560. Did you know you could hide

  561. from God

  562. even in church?

  563. That's a big way

  564. that Paul did it, right?

  565. You can come in this building

  566. and plenty of people

  567. are very regular

  568. at doing that,

  569. at going to church,

  570. but they are very distant

  571. from God

  572. because church,

  573. for them,

  574. is actually a place

  575. of religious performance

  576. where maybe if I do enough

  577. and do well enough

  578. and look good enough,

  579. I'm yet again affirmed

  580. in the fact that

  581. I don't really desperately

  582. need to draw near to God

  583. to have a relationship

  584. to day by day

  585. actually know Him

  586. and depend on Him.

  587. I can just go do

  588. that church thing

  589. every once in a while

  590. and I'll look good.

  591. How about you?

  592. How do you sometimes

  593. feel lost,

  594. distant from God,

  595. alone in a dark world?

  596. Are you either intentionally

  597. or maybe accidentally

  598. hiding from God,

  599. secretly longing to be found,

  600. wanting someone to show up

  601. and break into the struggle

  602. that you actually feel

  603. but often try to cover up?

  604. I'm convinced

  605. that's how Zacchaeus felt.

  606. It says he wanted

  607. to see Jesus,

  608. at least from a hiding spot

  609. in the sycamore tree.

  610. He'd have been able

  611. to get up there.

  612. He'd also been able

  613. to kind of stay hidden.

  614. I think in part,

  615. Zacchaeus wanted to see Jesus

  616. because he'd heard

  617. that this rabbi

  618. was different,

  619. specifically different

  620. toward tax collectors.

  621. None of the other religious leaders

  622. gave them the time of day.

  623. They didn't want to be

  624. anywhere near Him.

  625. They certainly would not

  626. have been caught

  627. in their presence

  628. in their homes

  629. but I think Zacchaeus

  630. had heard about this Jesus.

  631. Apparently,

  632. one of his disciples

  633. was a tax collector.

  634. Rumor had it

  635. that he was all the time

  636. eating and drinking

  637. with tax collectors

  638. and other sinners

  639. and so Zacchaeus

  640. heard that

  641. and he had been

  642. left out

  643. and hated

  644. and sent off

  645. as unclean

  646. for far too long.

  647. I think he was interested

  648. in someone

  649. who wouldn't

  650. treat him that way.

  651. Sure enough,

  652. he meets Jesus

  653. and Jesus not only

  654. comes to his house,

  655. Jesus brings

  656. salvation

  657. to his house,

  658. doesn't he?

  659. Because,

  660. good news for lost,

  661. desperate,

  662. hiding Zacchaeus,

  663. Jesus came

  664. for people

  665. just like him.

  666. Y'all,

  667. I hope

  668. that you don't think

  669. Jesus came

  670. for Zacchaeus

  671. and not for me.

  672. I hope you don't hear

  673. Jesus came to seek

  674. and save the lost

  675. and think,

  676. well that's good

  677. for them out there somewhere.

  678. Friends,

  679. this is good news

  680. for us.

  681. Wherever we might

  682. be hiding from God,

  683. however we're experiencing

  684. that distance

  685. from him this morning,

  686. however we are lost,

  687. Jesus came

  688. to seek

  689. and to save

  690. the lost.

  691. He wants to bring you

  692. back close

  693. to him.

  694. He says similar things

  695. in other places.

  696. Mark,

    Mark 2 chapter mention

  697. chapter 2,

  698. Jesus is eating

  699. with tax collectors

  700. and sinners

  701. and the religious leaders

  702. say,

  703. why is he doing this?

  704. They didn't understand

  705. and Jesus said,

  706. here's what you need

  707. to understand.

  708. Those who are well

  709. have no need

  710. of a physician.

  711. It's those who are sick.

  712. I came not to call

  713. the righteous

  714. but sinners.

  715. Jesus came

  716. expecting you

  717. to need him,

  718. not hoping

  719. that you wouldn't.

  720. That's actually,

  721. that would be the danger,

  722. not being too bad,

  723. too desperately

  724. distant from him

  725. but in some ways

  726. being too good,

  727. too confidently close

  728. that you don't even think

  729. he's necessary.

  730. Are you actively

  731. admitting your sin?

  732. The idolatry

  733. that looks bad

  734. to everybody else?

  735. Even the idolatry

  736. that looks good

  737. to other people?

  738. Both of those,

  739. are you turning

  740. to Jesus

  741. to rescue you

  742. from both of them,

  743. from anything

  744. that would keep you

  745. from him?

  746. He's here for that.

  747. He's here to meet you

  748. in that moment.

  749. John 12, 46,

  750. Jesus says,

  751. another way

  752. of his saying

  753. why he's come,

  754. I've come into

  755. the world as light

  756. so that whoever

  757. believes in me

  758. may not remain

  759. in darkness.

  760. What hope

  761. this should give

  762. the most discouraged

  763. or hopeless

  764. of us?

  765. You can admit

  766. the darkness

  767. in you,

  768. the darkness

  769. around you

  770. because that's

  771. why Jesus came.

  772. Jesus didn't come

  773. to recruit

  774. an all-star team.

  775. He didn't come

  776. to find those

  777. who were performing

  778. well already

  779. who had the spotlight

  780. on them

  781. and pay them enough

  782. to come over

  783. and be on his team.

  784. That's not what Jesus did.

  785. That's college football.

  786. That's what they do.

  787. Listen,

  788. Christmas is a rescue mission,

  789. not a recruiting trip.

  790. It's very different.

  791. Jesus came

  792. to seek the hiding,

  793. to find the lost,

  794. to save the sinners.

  795. Praise the Lord.

  796. You don't have

  797. to attract his attention.

  798. Your stats don't have

  799. to be good enough

  800. for him to pay you

  801. to be on his team.

  802. It's not how he works.

  803. He's come to rescue you.

  804. Remember,

  805. he's embodying

  806. the heart

  807. of this seeking God.

  808. Where does God

  809. seek lost people?

  810. It's all over the place.

  811. God seeks us

  812. in the heights

  813. of our success

  814. and our pride

  815. and our self-confidence.

  816. He knows we're lost there

  817. and he comes after us

  818. and in the depths

  819. of depression

  820. and despair

  821. and discouragement.

  822. He seeks those

  823. with broken minds.

  824. He seeks those

  825. with failing bodies

  826. who feel like

  827. they can't even

  828. keep it together anymore.

  829. They don't know

  830. how many days they have.

  831. The Christ of Christmas

  832. comes to the fields

  833. of humble shepherds

  834. as well as to the courts

  835. of kings

  836. and wise men.

  837. He comes after

  838. all those lost people.

  839. even perhaps

  840. especially

  841. to those

  842. that no one else

  843. is looking for

  844. or wanting to be with.

  845. Jesus comes.

  846. He comes for those people.

  847. If that's you

  848. and you think

  849. nobody has ever

  850. wanted to come for you,

  851. Jesus does.

  852. He has.

  853. He'll come back

  854. for you again.

  855. He comes not merely

  856. to locate people

  857. like that

  858. but to love them,

  859. to rescue them,

  860. to bring them home

  861. because we are feeling

  862. if we're honest

  863. most days

  864. we're feeling

  865. some of that darkness,

  866. some of that aloneness,

  867. some of that longing

  868. for fulfillment

  869. and things

  870. to be made right

  871. and that is where

  872. Jesus meets us

  873. right where you are

  874. in sin,

  875. in pain,

  876. in emptiness.

  877. Open your heart today

  878. to receive him.

  879. He has come.

  880. It's where he met Zacchaeus.

  881. Right?

  882. This is the point

  883. of this story

  884. that Jesus meets

  885. Zacchaeus right there.

  886. He seeks him out

  887. even better than Zacchaeus

  888. is seeking him

  889. and that Zacchaeus

  890. has money, right?

  891. It's one of the very few

  892. things we know about him.

  893. We know he's short

  894. and he's rich.

  895. Zacchaeus had money

  896. that he had gotten

  897. because he was hoping

  898. it would make him happy

  899. and significant

  900. and what happened

  901. is it was leaving him empty

  902. and searching.

  903. He was looking

  904. for Jesus

  905. and then Jesus

  906. brings salvation

  907. to his house.

  908. What happens?

  909. Notice.

  910. Zacchaeus now has

  911. a better source of life,

  912. doesn't he?

  913. Of joy,

  914. of significance,

  915. of satisfaction

  916. and everybody can see it.

  917. Nobody misses this

  918. in Zacchaeus' life.

  919. The guy who was greedy

  920. and stealing

  921. is now generous

  922. and sharing, right?

  923. Instead of scheming

  924. how he can get more,

  925. Zacchaeus is scheming

  926. how he can give more.

  927. Give this stuff

  928. to the poor.

  929. By the way,

  930. four times more

  931. back to that guy

  932. I took advantage of.

  933. A little bit more

  934. over here to them.

  935. Give it away.

  936. Friends,

  937. Jesus meets us

  938. where we are.

  939. He seeks us out

  940. in our lostness

  941. but he doesn't

  942. leave us there

  943. as the same person

  944. because we no longer

  945. find life and fulfillment

  946. in the same place.

  947. Just like Zacchaeus,

  948. when we get

  949. life and fulfillment

  950. in Jesus,

  951. we now scheme

  952. how to give it

  953. to others.

  954. How do we give life

  955. to others?

  956. As followers of Jesus,

  957. we go where he goes.

  958. Where does Jesus go?

  959. He goes seeking

  960. after the lost.

  961. We go following him

  962. after the least

  963. and the lost

  964. and the littlest

  965. and the lonely

  966. and the left out

  967. because that's where

  968. Jesus goes.

  969. They are on our radar.

  970. They are in our sights.

  971. We're to proclaim

  972. the excellencies

  973. of him who called us

  974. out of darkness

  975. into his marvelous light,

  976. the kingdom

  977. of his beloved son.

  978. Is that what marks

  979. your life?

  980. Is that where I'd

  981. find you this afternoon?

  982. Are you following Jesus

  983. toward tax collectors

  984. and sinners?

  985. Are you shining light

  986. into darkness

  987. that you know

  988. all too well?

  989. In India,

  990. perhaps because

  991. the darkness

  992. is a bit easier

  993. to see,

  994. Christians are always

  995. talking about

  996. the urgency

  997. and the priority

  998. of sharing

  999. the light of Jesus

  1000. with family members,

  1001. with people

  1002. in their village,

  1003. with whoever

  1004. it happens to be

  1005. that's right there

  1006. and some of that,

  1007. to be fair,

  1008. is because

  1009. those people

  1010. might be ones

  1011. who would persecute you.

  1012. But mostly,

  1013. it's because

  1014. there's a new life

1015. that we didn't have before

  1016. that we now have

  1017. to offer others.

  1018. We can offer them

  1019. a relationship

  1020. with a savior,

  1021. not a religion

  1022. of self-performance

  1023. and working your way

  1024. up the mountain

  1025. to the gods.

  1026. No,

  1027. we have something

  1028. to offer life

  1029. that is new

1030. and so it is an urgent

  1031. and constant priority

  1032. for them.

  1033. It challenged me.

  1034. My brothers and sisters,

  1035. the darkness,

  1036. the idolatry,

  1037. as I said,

  1038. is the same here.

  1039. It's hiding

  1040. a darkness,

  1041. a lostness

  1042. that we know

  1043. very well

  1044. ourselves.

  1045. So the need

  1046. to follow Jesus

  1047. towards those

  1048. who are lost,

  1049. towards those

  1050. who are hiding

  1051. is equally

  1052. an urgent priority

  1053. in Huntsville.

  1054. Even if the people

  1055. around you

  1056. have three kids,

  1057. two cars,

  1058. and a middle-class

  1059. lifestyle,

  1060. that's not what

  1061. brings you

  1062. into relationship

  1063. with Jesus.

  1064. We need Jesus.

  1065. We need to know

  1066. of our own emptiness

  1067. and our need

  1068. for him.

  1069. Don't be fooled

  1070. by external resources.

  1071. Jesus comes

  1072. to seek

  1073. and to save

  1074. Zacchaeus

  1075. and he's already

  1076. wealthy.

  1077. That's not enough

  1078. for Jesus.

  1079. He's not going

  1080. to leave Zacchaeus

  1081. lost in his

  1082. richness.

  1083. Jesus came

  1084. to seek

  1085. and to save

  1086. undeserving you

  1087. and me

  1088. and he sends

  1089. us on that

  1090. same mission.

  1091. Why Christmas?

  1092. Because we

  1093. and many others

  1094. hide

  1095. and need

  1096. to be found.

  1097. we and many others

  1098. sin

  1099. and we need

  1100. a savior.

  1101. So Jesus

  1102. came

  1103. not just to earth

  1104. to be born

  1105. but all the way

  1106. to the cross

  1107. to die

  1108. so that you

  1109. can know

  1110. that no matter

  1111. how far away

  1112. you are

  1113. from him,

  1114. no matter

  1115. how lost

  1116. you feel

  1117. and how

  1118. impossible

  1119. it seems

  1120. that God

  1121. could even

  1122. see you

  1123. because you

  1124. can't even

  1125. see or imagine

  1126. him

  1127. that you're

  1128. never too lost

  1129. and never

  1130. too far away

  1131. for him to

  1132. find you

  1133. and save you

  1134. and bring you

  1135. home.

  1136. He sat

  1137. with his disciples

  1138. on the night

  1139. that one of them

  1140. betrayed him

  1141. and he took bread

  1142. and he broke it

  1143. and he gave it

  1144. to them

  1145. as I

  1146. ministering

  1147. in his name

  1148. give this bread

  1149. to you

  1150. and he said

  1151. take and eat

  1152. this is my body

  1153. given for you

  1154. do this in

  1155. remembrance of me

1156. and in the same way

  1157. after supper

  1158. he took the cup

  1159. and said

  1160. this cup

  1161. is the new covenant

  1162. in my blood

  1163. shed for many

  1164. for the forgiveness

  1165. of sins

  1166. drink from it

  1167. all of you

  1168. for as often

1169. as you eat this bread

  1170. and drink this cup

  1171. you proclaim

  1172. the Lord's death

  1173. until he comes

  1174. you proclaim

  1175. in fact

  1176. that your hope

  1177. is in his dying

  1178. in your place

  1179. this is not

  1180. the table of Southwood

  1181. or the Presbyterian church

1182. it is the Lord's table

  1183. so if you trust

  1184. that not because

  1185. of anything

  1186. that you have done

  1187. but only because

  1188. of his amazing grace

  1189. that you were lost

  1190. and now are found

  1191. then you please come

  1192. and celebrate him

  1193. with us this morning

  1194. if in your heart

  1195. the verdict

  1196. is still out

  1197. on Jesus

  1198. perhaps you're

  1199. interested in him

  1200. it sounds interesting

  1201. and you're considering

  1202. that wonderful

  1203. but you're just

  1204. not sure yet

  1205. we're so glad

  1206. that you are here

  1207. this morning

  1208. we're glad

  1209. that you're able

  1210. to hear his heart

  1211. his purpose

1212. and why he has come

  1213. to rescue people

  1214. just like us

  1215. we invite you

  1216. to come forward

  1217. and back

  1218. to these tables

  1219. let us pray

  1220. to stay with you

  1221. or to stay

  1222. where you are

  1223. in your seats

  1224. is just fine

  1225. but we want you

  1226. to know something

1227. that if you stay there

  1228. while we're celebrating

  1229. together

  1230. it's not because

1231. we're better than you are

1232. it's not it at all

  1233. we're all hiders

  1234. we're all hiders

  1235. who desperately

  1236. desperately

  1237. need a God

  1238. who will come

  1239. seek after us

1240. who keeps seeking us out

  1241. and keeps setting

  1242. this table

  1243. and keeps inviting

  1244. us back to him

  1245. he's doing that

  1246. for you this morning

  1247. as well

  1248. let's pray

  1249. and we'll come celebrate

  1250. Jesus thank you

  1251. that we can now

  1252. draw near to you

  1253. would in these moments

  1254. would you help us

  1255. to do that

  1256. in our hearts

  1257. knowing that you

  1258. have already come near

  1259. to meet us

1260. that is the good news

  1261. of Christmas

  1262. you haven't stayed

  1263. far away

1264. you have sought us out

1265. we don't have to climb a mountain

1266. we don't have to pass a test

1267. we just have to admit

  1268. that we're lost

  1269. apart from you
