  1. You are listening to a message from Southwood Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama.

  2. Our passion is to experience and express grace.

  3. Join us.

  4. This morning, if you would turn with me into your Bibles to Hebrews chapter 10, verses 19 through 25.

    Hebrews 10:19–25

  5. This morning, we are not part of a series, kind of a one-off.

  6. We'll be essentially helicoptering in or, you know, parachuting into a short passage out of the book of Hebrews.

  7. Let's take a look at it and remind ourselves about the greatness of Jesus and how that thing that drives us, that moves us, that motivates us, that changes us, that Jesus draws us to each other.

  8. And so this, just as a short reminder, the book of Hebrews is written, unknown author, written to Jewish converts.

  9. It's essentially sermonic.

  10. It's a sermon written so that people are encouraged in order to persevere, to be faithful to Christ in all the things that go on in their lives, whether good, bad or ugly, that they would remain faithful to Jesus.

  11. And they would see the greatness of Jesus above everything else, no matter what they see, no matter what they face, no matter what they're tempted to do, they would see Jesus as greater.

  12. But this morning, before we get started with our sermon, I'm going to ask you guys a question.

  13. How do you handle critique?

  14. How do you handle criticism?

  15. If you're like me, yeah, I grit my teeth almost immediately.

  16. I tense up a little bit.

  17. Thank you for that.

  18. It's so helpful.

  19. How about this?

  20. It's a necessity.

  21. Oftentimes, I need people to tell me if I'm doing something wrong.

  22. There's a saying that I had with my friends that friends tell each other when they have spinach in their teeth, enemies let it ride.

  23. You know, like if you've got a hot date and your friend is going on a hot date and they have spinach in your teeth, you want to help them because you love them.

  24. You're your friend.

  25. But that's like, hey, dude, something's wrong.

  26. And so any sort of critique or criticism, often we just get tense and we don't like it and we hate it and we don't want anybody to tell us what we're doing wrong.

  27. We don't like it.

  28. We just don't.

  29. What about encouragement?

  30. How many of us have ever felt awkward when someone has said, hey, man, you did a great job?

  31. Oh, that feeling of someone else seeing something good that you've done.

  32. For a lot of us, it's really helpful and good.

  33. But a lot of us feels really awkward at times.

  34. I don't know how to I don't know how to receive a compliment often.

  35. What about how do you handle helping someone?

  36. How do you approach them?

  37. How do you go to them?

  38. What about receiving help?

  39. How do you ask for help?

  40. Have you ever considered these things?

  41. Right.

  42. The idea is that there's this necessity for someone outside of ourselves to help us, for us to help someone else.

  43. Right.

  44. And as we look at this passage today, as we try and remember who we are and what we're here for and what we're called to do.

  45. I want us to think about what we are called to do as we serve one another, as we love one another, because we belong to something bigger.

  46. Right.

  47. The title of my sermon is A Family of Faith.

  48. We belong.

  49. And I've said it several times already in our worship service.

  50. We belong to a family.

  51. We belong to something bigger, a community.

  52. The church is something more than us just doing this Christian life by ourselves.

  53. And so we belong to something bigger.

  54. So let's pause there as you think about, think about the way you hear people speaking into your lives.

  55. Let's hear from the word of God so that we might think rightly about it.

  56. Let's, if you, in your Bibles, we're going to read Hebrews chapter 10, verses 19 to 25.

    Hebrews 10:19–25

  57. Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is through his flesh.

  58. And since we have a great high priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.

  59. Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering.

  60. For he who promised is faithful.

  61. And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together as the habit of some, but encouraging one another.

  62. And all the more, as you see the day drawing near.

  63. This is God's word.

  64. Let's pray.

  65. Father, would you help us to see your word rightly?

  66. Help us to be changed and transformed and made more like Christ, to be sanctified, Lord.

  67. Would we find ourselves more and more in love with you, more and more changed by your word?

  68. Father, we thank you for all that you have done.

  69. We thank you that this is a reminder, that this is a summary of the good news of the gospel.

  70. And we pray that we would see it that way today.

  71. We love you and we pray this in Jesus' name.

  72. Amen.

  73. All right, this morning, I want us to take a moment and see that we are a family of faith.

  74. And immediately, if you read in chapter 10, right here in verse 19, I don't know if you've got a pew Bible.

  75. It says, therefore, brothers, and then there's a note.

  76. And if you look down and you have magnifying glass or you can see this, it says, or brothers and sisters.

  77. Right, there's this Greek word that tells us that this is not just to the men of the church, the Hebrew men.

  78. This is to God's people, all of God's people.

  79. It's a reminder, in many ways, of us, the reality of family within the church.

  80. A lot of us don't want to think this way.

  81. I understand.

  82. A lot of us come from families with brokenness, with hurt, with baggage.

  83. And no one, we don't want to think about this as a family affair.

  84. We don't want to think about this.

  85. But in reality, even though there are hard and bad things that happen in families, there are tough realities to being in a family.

  86. There is good, bad, and ugly.

  87. Even though that's true, it doesn't mean we should throw it away.

  88. It means that it should help change us when we look at it and we see it in the Bible.

  89. When we see it in the scriptures, it's language of tenderness and care and love that we need, that we need to be reminded of too.

  90. And so we need to be reminded that this is not just something that we've come to attend on Sunday morning from 930 to 1045, maybe 1030 today since the youth pastor's preaching.

  91. You know, it's not something that we've, it's not just something we attend.

  92. It's not something that we just do.

  93. It's something we belong to because we belong to the God of the universe.

  94. And so this is something that has to help change us.

  95. And it doesn't just change us.

  96. It changes our posture.

  97. It changes how we relate to one another, right?

  98. It doesn't just change us in kind of practical ways.

  99. But even though we know families are complicated, even when we know families are broken, even when we know the goal of this communication is to influence us, influence me, influence the reader, the original audience to remember that we belong to each other.

  100. That there's this family element to following Jesus, to being a part of it.

  101. And look, we all have different family issues, but we want to focus on the ideals in this moment, right?

  102. In an ideal world, though we know of everything that goes on, a family is a place of love, care, nurture, unity, beauty.

  103. It's a good and wonderful place.

  104. A family as it's meant to be is this amazing place where mothers and fathers love each other.

  105. Children are raised in beautiful to become these adult, perfect, great versions of themselves.

  106. Though some of us here struggle with that, including myself.

  107. We're called to be a family of faith.

  108. And immediately as we read this passage, we see this reality that we're called to be family.

  109. It's not the only time in the Bible this is mentioned.

  110. So this is why we can trust it.

  111. We can trust this kind of language is because it's not in isolation.

  112. Right.

  113. The Apostle Paul talks about adoption as sons.

  114. The Apostle Paul tells us that we have a spirit given to us that we cry out, Abba, Father.

  115. We have this reality that God is our father.

  116. And then if you go back further into the Old Testament, you see this language from Jeremiah where the prophet's talking about the God of the universe.

  117. He says, for I'm a father to Israel.

  118. Isaiah says, O Lord, thou art our father.

  119. Throughout the Old Testament, even, there's this language of God as our father in this familial language.

  120. And so we are called to remember that.

  121. I am.

  122. I don't.

  123. I'm a human being.

  124. I view things much more transactional than I should.

  125. I don't look often enough at people and say, oh, this is like my family.

  126. I often look at, is this something someone can give me or get me or what do I have to give to someone to get what I need?

  127. And don't even ask about the sins of a pastor where you're like much more looking at the church in a transactional way than you could ever imagine.

  128. The struggle against that is real.

  129. And yet, as we pause today, we must remember that we belong to one another in a family.

  130. The family of God.

  131. And that family has definitive characteristics.

  132. It has beautiful characteristics.

  133. It's not a family that's just kind of randomly made up.

  134. It's hopefully as a church, we're a family that's been changed by Christ.

  135. A family that's been made new.

  136. See, in this passage in Hebrews, the writer, who we don't know, right?

  137. There's lots of assumptions, lots of things we can think about it.

  138. Lots of ways that we can point, but we don't know.

  139. He says this.

  140. He said,

  141. Let us draw near, in verse 22,

  142. Let us draw near with a true heart and full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.

  143. There is a previous state that we were in.

  144. We have been washed.

  145. We have been cleansed.

  146. We have been changed.

  147. We are no longer the people we were.

  148. We now belong.

  149. We are cleansed and made right by the work of Jesus, by the blood of Jesus, by the cross and his resurrection.

  150. We're a family that's marked by change and transformation by the power of the gospel.

  151. And we have to remember that we're all changed by Jesus.

  152. That those of us who are part of God's people is that we are cleansed and made holy by Jesus himself.

  153. Not something we've done.

  154. Not something we can do.

  155. Not something we can work to achieve.

  156. We can't level up as a Christian.

  157. We can't make this our next goal for next year.

  158. Is that I'll just be a better, just a better Christian than the person next to me.

  159. I'll just, I'll keep, our goal is that we would worship the Lord because we, he is the one who's changed us.

  160. And this identifies us.

  161. This gives us an identifying marker.

  162. One of the things that we talk about in our youth ministry, when I hire summer interns, when I hire full-time staff,

  163. is, I don't, I don't try and put a biblical spin on it, but it's true in a sense, in a lot of ways,

  164. there are scripture that remind us of this, is that we have to remember that we are all on the same team.

  165. As one of the things.

  166. So, so when I make you mad, when I, which I inevitably do because I'm a sinner.

  167. And also, I just know my personality and know who I am.

  168. I'm very aware, I think.

  169. The reality is I would, as I make you mad, remember that we're on the same team.

  170. And I try and remind all of our staff and all of our people that work with us.

  171. Hey, we all serve the same Jesus.

  172. We all belong to the same family.

  173. We belong to the same people.

  174. We've all been changed by Jesus.

  175. And this is the, one of the markers of this family we belong to.

  176. And, and, and the beauty of this is, is that it's not something that we've done, right?

  177. We haven't done this.

  178. I haven't made this happen, right?

  179. Because the Bible talks about how the, how people don't have this ability innately.

  180. We don't just make ourselves good and make ourselves right and make ourselves holy.

  181. Right?

  182. People are sinful since.

  183. Genesis.

  184. Jeremiah talks about how our hearts are deceitful above all things and desperately wicked.

  185. The Apostle Paul reminds us that in Romans chapter three, that all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.

  186. So something must have happened to change us.

  187. Something must have transformed us.

  188. Something has made us new creations in Christ.

  189. And it was Jesus.

  190. This, this whole portion of, of chapter 10 of Hebrews is, is, is we kind of end it in the later verses of chapters, verses 24 and 25.

  191. With like exhortation to do, to love one another, to care for one another.

  192. So to live as that family.

  193. But he doesn't leave the summary of, he doesn't leave the, this exhortation with no reminder of the beauty of the gospel.

  194. He's reminding us that we've been made clean.

  195. He's been reminding us that we, he's, he's taking his whole argument for the first nine plus chapters of Hebrews and saying, here's a little summary of what I've already said.

  196. Remember Jesus, our great high priest.

  197. Remember you've been cleansed by Jesus.

  198. Remember how good he is.

  199. Remember, cling to this goodness, this truth, so that you might love one another as Christ has loved us.

  200. And so we're a family of changed people.

  201. Not because of us, but because, as 2 Corinthians 5 verse 21 puts it,

    2 Corinthians 5:21

  202. God made him who had no sin to be sin for us.

  203. So that in him, we might become the righteousness of God.

  204. And it's because of Jesus, this is why this is such a wild passage.

  205. Like this is a, this is truly a wild passage.

  206. Like, and again, like this, I don't know how engineers talk about certain things because it's an engine,

  207. but I know how like pastors talk about the Bible.

  208. Like this is wild.

  209. And y'all are like, it's a Bible passage.

  210. But the reality of what this means, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus,

  211. something that we could not do, we could not enter the holy places.

  212. Only the priest, the great, the high priest could do it.

  213. By a new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is through his flesh,

  214. that his death achieved for us.

  215. His flesh, meaning that his death allows us this, this access to the God of the universe.

  216. And since we have a great high priest over the house of God, let us draw near.

  217. We get to draw near to the God of the universe.

  218. As God's people, we've been changed.

  219. And that change allows us access to God.

  220. It's a transformation that will trump anything we try and achieve this next year.

  221. As you wake up tomorrow and you look at your list of things you're going to do,

  222. there is no change greater than what Christ has done for his people.

  223. By giving them access to the very God of the universe.

  224. And so we're a family that's been changed,

  225. but we have to place our confidence in things.

  226. There are lots of things that we can place our confidence in.

  227. You know, we live in a world full of great things.

  228. Money, power, our reputation.

  229. I can put my confidence in anything in the world that I really want to.

  230. I can create my own little space where I'm living in with confidence.

  231. I could put it in my reputation of just being a pastor.

  232. But our confidence in what we do and how we live in this world,

  233. whether we are interacting with Christians or not,

  234. our confidence must be in Jesus and his sacrifice.

  235. I'm confident because he's the high priest over the house of God.

  236. See, he's been given a title that I could never achieve.

  237. And I can be confident in him.

  238. I can trust him because of what he has done.

  239. I can tell you that I would not walk into a lawyer's office and be confident in asking them to fix a sickness.

  240. And in the same way, I wouldn't walk into a doctor's office and be confident in their ability to handle my lawsuit.

  241. And in the same way, I wouldn't walk into an accountant's office and say,

  242. do you know how to translate Spanish really well?

  243. Okay.

  244. Like there are people who have these expertise and these titles and these realities.

  245. And what we see with Jesus is we can place all of our confidence in our interactions with one another as a family,

  246. good, bad, or ugly,

  247. because he is the great high priest.

  248. Not me.

  249. Not something I've done.

  250. But because of him.

  251. And not only that,

  252. we can see a little bit of his character as well.

  253. Though we know Jesus as the son of God,

  254. the lamb who was slain,

  255. the king of kings,

  256. lord of lords,

  257. the high priest of the new covenant,

  258. the one who changes people.

  259. We can remember

  260. that he is faithful.

  261. He is faithful to his people.

  262. Let us hold fast the confession of our hope.

  263. Let us hold fast to what we have spoken as truth,

  264. that Jesus is Lord.

  265. Without wavering for he who promised this,

  266. his work,

  267. he is faithful.

  268. If we were to sit here

  269. and I could list a million times where I have failed.

  270. I'm sure all of us could,

  271. to some degree,

  272. sit here and just,

  273. if we just wrote notes today and just said,

  274. these are the times that I have failed.

  275. But then we sat down and we wrote down,

  276. how has Jesus failed?

  277. We couldn't.

  278. Jesus,

  279. the perfect son of God.

  280. Jesus,

  281. without sin.

  282. Jesus,

  283. the one

  284. who we can put our confidence in.

  285. Not just because

  286. we see it in his sinless life,

  287. but because we see it

  288. by the power of his resurrection.

  289. His death

  290. changes us.

  291. And his resurrection

  292. is a reminder of the confidence we have

  293. in the life eternal.

  294. And so we are,

  295. we're seeing that,

  296. that we're a family,

  297. right?

  298. We're a family.

  299. We're defined by certain things.

  300. We're changed.

  301. We're,

  302. we're,

  303. we're changed by Christ.

  304. We're confident in Christ.

  305. Christ.

  306. But there's a reason for our confidence.

  307. And,

  308. and it's pretty much an overlapping point

  309. to some degree

  310. when you're trying to remember this,

  311. that we're confident in Christ,

  312. but we're anchored by Christ.

  313. And the reason why I want to do this,

  314. because there's just,

  315. again,

  316. this moment where you,

  317. when you study things

  318. and you read,

  319. and,

  320. and I want to point out in verse two,

  321. verse 20 of chapter 10,

  322. it says,

  323. I'll read the whole thing for just a second.

  324. Therefore,

  325. brothers,

  326. since we have confidence

  327. to enter the holy places

  328. by the blood of Jesus,

  329. by the new and living way

  330. that he opened us

  331. through the curtain,

  332. that Jesus has given us

  333. a new and living way,

  334. the access to God,

  335. ways to be in relationship

  336. and connection

  337. and contact with him.

  338. This new and living way

  339. is translated differently.

  340. Right?

  341. We,

  342. we see it

  343. here in our English versions

  344. as,

  345. as new and living,

  346. and we can kind of talk through that,

  347. but

  348. it means

  349. permanent.

  350. A permanent way.

  351. It's an open way

  352. that is never closed

  353. to his people.

  354. It's an ongoing,

  355. never ending access

  356. to the God

  357. of the universe.

  358. And if you just say,

  359. oh,

  360. it's a,

  361. you know,

  362. it's a living plant.

  363. We understand

  364. that the plant will die

  365. one day.

  366. And if we just kind of

  367. use our regular

  368. kind of way

  369. of talking about

  370. the word living,

  371. it's,

  372. it's alive.

  373. but the emphasis

  374. of these words

  375. in the Greek

  376. are meant

  377. to remind us

  378. that it's this

  379. never ending.

  380. You cannot stop.

  381. When you are in Christ,

  382. you have this

  383. ongoing forever access

  384. to the Father,

  385. access to God

  386. in a way that we had

  387. never had before.

  388. And the great high priest

  389. who has gone before us

  390. has made this possible.

  391. Jesus has opened this door

  392. and allowed us in

  393. and you forever

  394. have access.

  395. You have forever

  396. VIP access

  397. to the God

  398. of the universe.

  399. And there is no end

  400. to it in sight.

  401. Because one day

  402. when we do

  403. leave this world,

  404. when we pass away,

  405. we still

  406. have access.

  407. And so this is

  408. a great anchor to us

  409. is that it's

  410. ongoing forever

  411. and never ends.

  412. This Jesus

  413. who is faithful

  414. has given us

  415. this great anchor

  416. and it's a reminder

  417. even if you,

  418. I use this word

  419. simply because

  420. in chapter 6

  421. of Hebrews,

  422. he talks about Jesus

  423. and this promise

  424. of Jesus being

  425. the anchor to our soul.

  426. And this idea

  427. that Jesus is greater

  428. than anything,

  429. everything that you

  430. can imagine,

  431. whatever religion,

  432. idol,

  433. or whatever you

  434. could place,

  435. he is still greater.

  436. And so Jesus

  437. anchors us,

  438. he holds us,

  439. he allows us

  440. this opportunity

  441. that never ends.

  442. And it's

  443. more than just living,

  444. it's eternal.

  445. And so as people,

  446. as a family of God

  447. that we're called

  448. to one another,

  449. we're meant

  450. to be connected

  451. to one another.

  452. We're meant

  453. to be

  454. more than just

  455. passers-by

  456. in this room.

  457. So we've been

  458. changed by Christ,

  459. we've been

  460. anchored to Christ,

  461. we're called

  462. to point each other

  463. to Christ.

  464. And I want us

  465. to go back

  466. to this idea

  467. of family

  468. and the ideal

  469. that we're trying

  470. to hope for.

  471. And listen,

  472. I often

  473. fail

  474. miserably.

  475. I know

  476. my nature

  477. to a degree

  478. or at least

  479. I'm willing

  480. to admit

  481. this part

  482. of my nature.

  483. I really

  484. want to be

  485. right in an

  486. argument.

  487. I love it.

  488. I just do.

  489. I think a lot

  490. of us do.

  491. If not all

  492. of us.

  493. We really,

  494. when we're

  495. in a disagreement

  496. or in,

  497. whether it's

  498. deeply sinful

  499. or just

  500. trying to

  501. remind someone

  502. that,

  503. you know,

  504. someone played

  505. this character

  506. in a movie

  507. and you're

  508. like,

  509. I remember

  510. the actor

  511. was that,

  512. you just

  513. want to be

  514. right.

  515. Whatever it

  516. is,

  517. you love

  518. it.

  519. And we

  520. are called

  521. to point

  522. each other

  523. to Christ

  524. and it

  525. is rooted

  526. in this

  527. idea of

  528. family,

  529. right?

  530. In verses

  531. 24 and

  532. 25,

  533. let us

  534. consider how

  535. to stir

  536. up one

  537. another

  538. to love

  539. and good

  540. works,

  541. not neglecting

  542. to meet

  543. together as

  544. the habit

  545. of some,

  546. but encouraging

  547. one another

  548. and all the

  549. more as you

  550. see the day

  551. drawing near,

  552. the day

  553. of Jesus'

  554. return.

  555. And so we

  556. have an end

  557. date for

  558. this relationship,

  559. this thing we're

  560. supposed to do

  561. together as

  562. God's people.

  563. When Jesus

  564. returns,

  565. and so until

  566. then,

  567. so we've got

  568. this,

  569. because we

  570. don't know,

  571. we've got

  572. this vision

  573. for this day

  574. that we don't

  575. yet know.

  576. That we're

  577. called to

  578. meet together,

  579. to encourage

  580. one another,

  581. to point one

  582. another to

  583. Christ.

  584. Christ.

  585. But I

  586. often want

  587. to do

  588. that so

  589. I can

  590. tell you,

  591. it's not

  592. about pointing

  593. you to

  594. Christ,

  595. it's about

  596. telling you

  597. where you're

  598. wrong,

  599. where I've

  600. caught you,

  601. ha ha,

  602. I got you,

  603. you're wrong,

  604. because I like

  605. being right

  606. more than

  607. anything.

  608. But what the

  609. writer of Hebrews

  610. is trying to

  611. tell us is that

  612. our posture

  613. as a family

  614. of God is

  615. one that is

  616. called to

  617. encourage and

  618. love and

  619. care for

  620. one another.

  621. That we're

  622. called to

  623. lean in

  624. towards one

  625. another.

  626. What do we

  627. do with all

  628. this great

  629. information that

  630. we've been

  631. given about

  632. Jesus, that

  633. he is our

  634. savior, that

  635. he has

  636. cleansed us,

  637. that he has

  638. made us

  639. holy, that

  640. he has

  641. brought us

  642. out of

  643. darkness into

  644. light, out

  645. of death into

  646. life.

  647. What are we

  648. supposed to

  649. do with all

  650. this good

  651. information and

  652. it's supposed

  653. to draw us

  654. to one

  655. another?

  656. It's supposed

  657. to bring

  658. us

  659. together.

  660. Christianity

  661. is not a

  662. lone ranger

  663. game.

  664. The things

  665. we do, this

  666. is not about

  667. just you and

  668. Jesus.

  669. Yes, there

  670. is this

  671. individual

  672. relationship

  673. between you

  674. and the

  675. Lord, but

  676. there is

  677. this community

  678. that you

  679. are called

  680. to.

  681. And it

  682. is a

  683. delightfully

  684. weird and

  685. awesome,

  686. amazing, and

  687. broken community

  688. that we are

  689. called to.

  690. we are

  691. called to

  692. each other.

  693. And I

  694. love that

  695. we as a

  696. church are

  697. committed to

  698. things like

  699. grace groups

  700. and the

  701. things that

  702. small groups

  703. and in the

  704. youth ministry

  705. we have

  706. them and

  707. our adults

  708. have them

  709. and we're

  710. called to

  711. connect with

  712. one another

  713. and be a

  714. part of

  715. each other's

  716. lives.

  717. But we're

  718. called to

  719. do so in

  720. order that we

  721. might honor

  722. the one

  723. who's

  724. called us.

  725. We're

  726. called to

  727. each other

  728. to love.

  729. We're called

  730. to each other

  731. in order that

  732. we might love

  733. each other

  734. well.

  735. And listen,

  736. there are

  737. hard things

  738. that have

  739. to be said

  740. at times.

  741. There are

  742. hard words

  743. that have

  744. to be

  745. spoken.

  746. Hard,

  747. not meaning

  748. just mean

  749. but difficult

  750. and loving.

  751. Consider how

  752. to stir

  753. one another

  754. to love

  755. and good

  756. works.

  757. not

  758. neglecting

  759. to meet

  760. together

  761. that we

  762. are called

  763. to stir

  764. one another

  765. up to

  766. honor the

  767. Lord.

  768. Why?

  769. Why?

  770. Because this

  771. Jesus has

  772. made us new

  773. because this

  774. Jesus has

  775. transformed us

  776. because this

  777. Jesus has

  778. brought us

  779. into life

  780. with him.

  781. And so we

  782. do this until

  783. he returns.

  784. We're

  785. called

  786. to offer

  787. faithful

  788. scripture

  789. led

  790. sanctifying

  791. care

  792. for one

  793. another.

  794. And

  795. oftentimes

  796. because of

  797. this,

  798. this is why

  799. I ask

  800. this question

  801. when you

  802. like

  803. criticism,

  804. like we

  805. often

  806. interpret

  807. someone

  808. walking with

  809. us in our

  810. lives,

  811. walking with

  812. us with

  813. the sins

  814. that we

  815. struggle with,

  816. walking with

  817. us in the

  818. hardships,

  819. the brokenness,

  820. the hurt,

  821. the pain.

  822. we don't

  823. want to

  824. receive,

  825. we just,

  826. oh,

  827. it's your

  828. just,

  829. why are you

  830. being so

  831. critical?

  832. Why are you

  833. telling me

  834. what to do

  835. with my

  836. life?

  837. We get

  838. this place

  839. where we

  840. get more

  841. defensive.

  842. And so

  843. there's kind of

  844. two sides of the

  845. coin.

  846. It's not just

  847. that we

  848. need to be

  849. people who

  850. receive

  851. sanctification

  852. and the love

  853. of our

  854. brothers and

  855. sisters in

  856. Christ.

  857. It's not that

  858. we just

  859. receive that well.

  860. That's true,

  861. but we also

  862. need to give

  863. it well.

  864. Because there's

  865. also this call

  866. for us to

  867. love one

  868. another well.

  869. Love and

  870. good,

  871. to stir one

  872. another up to

  873. love and good

  874. works,

  875. encouraging one

  876. another.

  877. Our hearts

  878. have to be

  879. transformed by

  880. Jesus in order

  881. that we might

  882. pour out into

  883. other people.

  884. We cannot do

  885. this by

  886. ourselves.

  887. I'm not led

  888. to walk with

  889. someone in

  890. their life

  891. lovingly,

  892. with care,

  893. on my own.

  894. This is why

  895. we have to

  896. be a family

  897. rooted in

  898. the gospel.

  899. We have to

  900. be a family

  901. rooted in

  902. change that's

  903. done by

  904. Christ,

  905. because if

  906. we aren't,

  907. what we will

  908. be are people

  909. who just like

  910. to give really

  911. good advice

  912. about what it

  913. looks like to

  914. be holy.

  915. It might look

  916. like, oh,

  917. this looks

  918. good.

  919. You do that.

  920. But when our

  921. hearts are

  922. transformed,

  923. when we've

  924. been made

  925. new by Jesus,

  926. we are able

  927. to interact

  928. with people,

  929. interact with

  930. our brothers and

  931. sisters in

  932. Christ in a

  933. way that looks

  934. at them with

  935. care and

  936. compassion and

  937. humility,

  938. humility, so

  939. that we might

  940. love them

  941. well and

  942. point them to

  943. Jesus.

  944. We have this

  945. great Savior,

  946. and so we are

  947. motivated and

  948. moved to love

  949. one another by

  950. the love that

  951. he has poured

  952. out on us.

  953. Jesus has

  954. given us a

  955. living way,

  956. a way that we

  957. might know

  958. life and life

  959. eternally.

  960. love one

  961. and we are

  962. called to walk

  963. with one

  964. another and

  965. love one

  966. another and

  967. point them to

  968. that way.

  969. I know a lot

  970. of us,

  971. including myself,

  972. have had

  973. seasons of

  974. struggle and

  975. loneliness,

  976. times where we

  977. felt alone and

  978. isolated,

  979. unloved,

  980. hurt,

  981. uncared for.

  982. someone pointed

  983. out to me

  984. this couple

  985. of lines from

  986. the Harry

  987. Potter movies,

  988. which,

  989. sorry,

  990. there's a

  991. wonderful,

  992. one of my

  993. favorite things

  994. is that there's

  995. this article you

  996. can find online,

  997. if you go

  998. Google Jesus

  999. and Christianity

  1000. and Harry

  1001. Potter,

  1002. there's an

  1003. article where

  1004. she,

  1005. J.K.

  1006. Rowling's

  1007. interviewed about

  1008. the themes of

  1009. her books and

  1010. how the boy who

  1011. lived and the

  1012. resurrection and

  1013. all these things

  1014. of redemption

  1015. and evil being

  1016. defeated,

  1017. all these things

  1018. are pointed out

  1019. and she has a

  1020. background,

  1021. having grown up

  1022. in church,

  1023. I'm not saying

  1024. I support

  1025. everything she

  1026. does,

  1027. I just want to

  1028. make sure I

  1029. draw a line

  1030. right there real

  1031. quick,

  1032. but there's a

  1033. line in the

  1034. movie where

  1035. Harry is

  1036. interacting with

  1037. Luna Lovegood,

  1038. listen,

  1039. it would take

  1040. me another

  1041. half hour to

  1042. try to explain

  1043. who these

  1044. characters are,

  1045. thank you,

  1046. yes,

  1047. but there's

  1048. just this

  1049. beauty of what

  1050. she's saying to

  1051. Harry,

  1052. Luna says,

  1053. we believe you

  1054. by the way,

  1055. she's talking

  1056. about how the

  1057. main evil

  1058. character is

  1059. back,

  1060. we believe you

  1061. by the way

  1062. that he who

  1063. must not be

  1064. named is

  1065. back and you

  1066. fought him and

  1067. the ministry and

  1068. the prophet are

  1069. conspiring against

  1070. you and

  1071. Dumbledore,

  1072. and so this is

  1073. Harry interacting

  1074. with someone who

  1075. believes him that

  1076. the main bad guy

  1077. is back,

  1078. thanks,

  1079. seems you're about

  1080. the only ones

  1081. that do,

  1082. and then Luna

  1083. says,

  1084. I don't think

  1085. that's true,

  1086. but I suppose

  1087. that's how he,

  1088. Voldemort,

  1089. he wants you to

  1090. feel,

  1091. what do you

  1092. mean?

  1093. Says Harry,

  1094. well if I were

  1095. Voldemort,

  1096. I'd want you

  1097. to feel cut

  1098. off from

  1099. everyone else

  1100. because if

  1101. you're just

  1102. alone,

  1103. you're not as

  1104. much of a

  1105. threat.

  1106. If I were

  1107. you know who,

  1108. if I were

  1109. the devil,

  1110. if I were

  1111. the world,

  1112. if I were

  1113. sin,

  1114. I'd want you

  1115. to feel cut

  1116. off from

  1117. everyone else

  1118. because if

  1119. you're alone,

  1120. you're not as

  1121. much of a

  1122. threat.

  1123. But

  1124. you are

  1125. not alone.

  1126. Christ has

  1127. called you

  1128. as his

  1129. people

  1130. to himself,

  1131. but he has

  1132. called you

  1133. to a body

  1134. of people

  1135. who delight

  1136. in the Lord

  1137. Jesus

  1138. and delight

  1139. to walk

  1140. together in

  1141. this life

  1142. in order

  1143. that we

  1144. might know

  1145. Jesus

  1146. and point

  1147. each other

  1148. to the

  1149. Christ,

  1150. to point

  1151. each other

  1152. to him,

  1153. the one

  1154. who changes

  1155. us,

  1156. the one

  1157. who is our

  1158. anchor,

  1159. the one

  1160. whom we

  1161. can trust.

  1162. Let's pray.

  1163. Father,

  1164. we're grateful

  1165. for this

  1166. time,

  1167. this morning

  1168. to be

  1169. together.

  1170. May we

  1171. remember,

  1172. Lord,

  1173. that you

  1174. are faithful

  1175. to us,

  1176. you are

  1177. good to

  1178. us,

  1179. you care

  1180. for us,

  1181. you have

  1182. us in

  1183. mind even

  1184. now as

  1185. you,

  1186. Jesus,

  1187. as you

  1188. sit on the

  1189. right hand

  1190. of God

  1206. and he

  1207. has given

  1208. us his

  1209. people so

  1210. that we

  1211. might be

  1212. together,

  1213. be a

  1214. community,

  1215. that is

  1216. called to

  1217. you,

  1218. that is

  1219. worshiping

  1220. you and

  1221. will be

  1222. with you

  1223. both now

  1224. and forever.

  1225. I pray
