  1. You are listening to a message from Southwood Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama.

  2. Our passion is to experience and express grace.

  3. Join us.

  4. Boy, we have a lot of good reasons to look at God's Word together this morning.

  5. Hope in the face of Christ.

  6. We're returning this morning to our study of John's Gospel, where we're seeking to do

  7. just that, to encounter the real Jesus, to know who He is and what He's about.

  8. John wants us, remember, to understand who Jesus really is because He wants for us to

  9. believe.

  10. He wants for our friends and our neighbors to believe.

  11. He wants for us to find life in Jesus.

  12. This issue of who Jesus is is central to John's whole account, especially to the part we're

  13. in right now.

  14. Everyone is asking that question.

  15. Everyone's talking about Jesus.

  16. After all, they have watched Him heal all sorts of people.

  17. He has just miraculously fed 5,000 plus, and then He spoke to them about Himself.

  18. He said, I am the bread of life.

  19. Jesus offering, fulfilling, eternal life just by believing in Him.

  20. But so many don't believe.

  21. Most right now are leaving Him.

  22. John told us this would happen.

  23. And remember chapter 1, He came to His own people, but His own did not receive Him.

  24. Our passage today highlights unbelief.

  25. Not merely unbelief like, I reject everything Jesus claims and don't want anything to do with

  26. Him, but the kind of unbelief struggles that all of us, church people who hang around Jesus,

  27. us too, have with following Jesus.

  28. He's a Jesus who calls us to find life in Him.

  29. Therefore, all of life in Him.

  30. That's where He calls us to follow Him, is in everything living with Him and for Him.

  31. So we need to pray for our hearts this morning as we hear God's Word.

  32. And then we'll read this next section in three different pieces as we go.

  33. Let's pray together.

  34. Father, I pray for our hearts this morning.

  35. For our busy hearts.

  36. Our hurting hearts.

  37. Our tired hearts.

  38. Our distracted hearts.

  39. Our selfish hearts.

  40. We need you.

  41. We need you to work there.

  42. We need you to soften and transform and comfort and enliven and inspire our hearts with the love of Jesus.

  43. We ask that you would in Jesus' name.

  44. Amen.

  45. Amen.

  46. I love you.

  47. But not that much.

  48. Imagine you grew up loving peanut butter.

  49. You wanted to eat everything peanut butter you possibly could.

  50. You started growing peanuts.

  51. You research all day the best peanut butter products imaginable.

  52. And then you find out that the girl you've started dating is severely allergic to peanuts.

  53. She spends her whole life protecting herself from peanut products.

  54. No eating.

  55. No kissing.

  56. No touching.

  57. I love you.

  58. But not that much is going to be said at some point to her.

  59. Or if you can imagine it, maybe to peanut butter.

  60. Imagine you meet a guy in school and you become best friends.

  61. And you just want to do everything together.

  62. You want to hang out on the weekends.

  63. You're going to start a business together and do all of life.

  64. But he keeps talking smack about your mama.

  65. I love you, man, but not that much.

  66. Something's got to give.

  67. Or the ultimate struggle.

  68. Imagine you grow up obsessed with Alabama football.

  69. From birth, your parents named you so your initials would be RTR.

  70. And you have now become a cheerleader for Alabama

  71. who happens to have fallen in love with the Auburn quarterback.

  72. Who spends his whole life working against what you love most.

  73. I don't know when that struggle will reach a breaking point.

  74. Could be the orange and blue pom-poms he gives you for your birthday.

  75. Could be when he asks you to say War Eagle.

  76. Maybe it's the day of the Iron Bowl the first time.

  77. But at some point, either he or Alabama will hear,

  78. I love you, but not that much.

  79. Those are mostly silly examples.

  80. Although if I hit a little too close to home in your marriage,

  81. I'm really sorry.

  82. Wasn't aiming for anybody.

  83. But the point is serious.

  84. We can't live for someone whose life works against what we love most.

  85. There are more serious things than those I've just said

  86. that we love deep in our hearts.

  87. And as people in this passage encounter Jesus,

  88. they're going to show their struggle with following him.

  89. John, who's always focused on belief and unbelief,

  90. helps us realize that our struggles with following Jesus

  91. are at their root heart issues.

  92. Sometimes we like to tell ourselves,

  93. they're just in my head,

  94. it's just an intellectual conundrum that I can't get around.

  95. There's just something I can't argue myself out of.

  96. It's a heart issue.

  97. We can't live for someone

  98. whose life works against what we love most.

  99. Listen for that as we read John 7.

  100. This is now several months after the feeding of the 5,000

  101. and most of Jesus' followers leaving him.

  102. Jesus has stayed close to home for a while in Galilee.

  103. Matthew, Mark, and Luke tell us all he's been doing and teaching.

  104. But he hasn't been back to Jerusalem,

  105. which is beginning to frustrate his brothers.

  106. Verse 1.

  107. After this, Jesus went about in Galilee.

  108. He would not go about in Judea

  109. because the Jews were seeking to kill him.

  110. Now the Jews' feast of booths was at hand.

  111. So his brothers said to him,

  112. leave here and go to Judea

  113. that your disciples also may see the works you are doing.

  114. For no one works in secret

  115. if he seeks to be known openly.

  116. If you do these things,

  117. show yourself to the world.

  118. For not even his brothers believed in him.

  119. Jesus said to them,

  120. my time has not yet come,

  121. but your time is always here.

  122. The world cannot hate you,

  123. but it hates me

  124. because I testify about it

  125. that its works are evil.

  126. You go up to the feast.

  127. I'm not going up to this feast

  128. for my time has not yet fully come.

  129. After saying this,

  130. he remained in Galilee.

  131. Put yourself in James' sandals for a moment.

  132. One of Jesus' brothers

  133. that we know was later a leader

  134. in the early church.

  135. You are a strong, strategic go-getter

  136. by personality.

  137. You're sensitive to the honor

  138. of the family name being so vital

  139. in Jewish culture.

  140. The best way to get ahead,

  141. to have your family be influential

  142. and honorable,

  143. that's where it's at

  144. and you know it.

  145. And here you find yourself

  146. with an opportunity.

  147. This eccentric older brother of yours

  148. is doing some really amazing, cool stuff.

  149. There's an opportunity to capitalize on,

  150. but he's got no sense of getting ahead,

  151. of building a movement.

  152. Almost no one is with him anymore

  153. and he's spending all his time

  154. in these small towns.

  155. Religious credibility

  156. comes from Jerusalem.

  157. The crowds gathered there,

  158. the leaders of the temple.

  159. I've got some advice for you, Jesus.

  160. Go to Jerusalem.

  161. Do some events there.

  162. You know, showcase,

  163. show off your glory a bit.

  164. You'll build a following.

  165. It'll be great for my,

  166. I mean, your car.

  167. Can you relate to feelings like that?

  168. I can.

  169. I'm battling these feelings right now

  170. because I'm preaching

  171. at Presbytery Tuesday

  172. to a bunch of preachers.

  173. More than ever,

  174. I want the people listening to me

  175. to think well of what I say.

  176. I'm wrestling with thoughts of,

  177. maybe if I say this,

  178. it'll make this guy praise me afterwards.

  179. Maybe this will impress him.

  180. And what I really want

  181. is to point them to Jesus,

  182. what we all need.

  183. But there's a lot else

  184. that my heart loves

  185. and wants to happen then.

  186. That longing

  187. for worldly success

  188. makes for quite a struggle

  189. in following Jesus

  190. wholeheartedly.

  191. In your heart,

  192. it may feel like pride.

  193. In your own reputation,

  194. your status,

  195. wanting fame,

  196. respect among your peers.

  197. It might feel like envy

  198. of what others have.

  199. Greed

  200. for more power,

  201. more influence,

  202. more money.

  203. Loving

  204. the praise of men.

  205. Does it feel so good

  206. to hear the wonderful things

  207. they'll say?

  208. But if those feelings

  209. are left unchecked

  210. to flourish in your heart,

  211. they'll keep you

  212. from being all in

  213. with Jesus,

  214. following Jesus

  215. where he calls you

  216. to go.

  217. You can be like his brothers

  218. who see the cool things

  219. he does

  220. and they don't mind

  221. hanging around him

  222. when it makes you look good,

  223. but if you're in it

  224. for the worldly success,

  225. you don't believe

  226. in Jesus.

  227. That may sound harsh.

  228. I mean,

  229. maybe you think,

  230. like I did,

  231. that verse 5 should read,

  232. for his brothers

  233. believed in him.

  234. I mean,

  235. didn't they want people

  236. to see his miracles?

  237. They've seen the stuff.

  238. They think he can do

  239. more cool stuff.

  240. They believed in him, right?

  241. No.

  242. No, they didn't.

  243. Lots of people

  244. have seen his miracles

  245. but not seen

  246. who Jesus

  247. was.

  248. Their hearts

  249. are for themselves,

  250. not Jesus.

  251. For the praise of man,

  252. not the praise of God.

  253. That's why Jesus

  254. says to them,

  255. the world cannot

  256. hate you

  257. because you share

  258. its values,

  259. its definition

  260. of success,

  261. the world's pathway

  262. to get there.

  263. So Jesus' brothers

  264. are clearly not

  265. following him.

  266. They go on

  267. without him,

  268. don't they?

  269. John Piper

  270. was really helpful

  271. to me

  272. in this place

  273. pointing out

  274. it's not a head

  275. problem

  276. for them.

  277. They've seen

  278. the great works,

  279. they know we can do them,

  280. but there's a heart

  281. problem going on,

  282. isn't there?

  283. They love

  284. worldly success

  285. more than

  286. the pathway

  287. of Jesus.

  288. Piper says,

  289. our natural love

  290. for human glory

  291. makes it impossible

  292. to know and follow

  293. a person

  294. whose whole life

  295. is bent on

  296. emptying himself

  297. to glorify his father

  298. and save sinners.

  299. It is impossible

  300. to know him

  301. for who he really is

  302. when his whole coming,

  303. living,

  304. dying,

  305. contradicts

  306. your deepest love,

  307. namely,

  308. the love of human praise.

  309. Jesus seems intent

  310. on downward

  311. mobility

  312. when you're longing

  313. to move up

  314. in the world.

  315. You want a bigger

  316. reputation,

  317. a bigger house,

  318. a bigger bank account,

  319. and Jesus'

  320. life and words

  321. keep working

  322. against that.

  323. He's humble.

  324. No place

  325. to lay his head.

  326. Share your money

  327. with those

  328. who have less.

  329. Jesus.

  330. Maybe if you're James,

  331. you'd say,

  332. I love you,

  333. Jesus,

  334. but not that much.

  335. And his brothers

  336. are off

  337. to make a name

  338. for themselves

  339. in Jerusalem

  340. lest they get

  341. stuck in Galilee

  342. when they grow up.

  343. One of the things

  344. I really love

  345. at this point

  346. in this story

  347. is that

  348. Jesus

  349. is intent

  350. on waiting

  351. for the direction

  352. of his father

  353. even when it makes

  354. no sense

  355. from a human perspective.

  356. Humanly speaking,

  357. this is the time

  358. to act.

  359. Jesus is waiting

  360. on his father's timing

  361. even though his popularity

  362. is dwindling.

  363. His mission

  364. seems to be faltering.

  365. His poll numbers

  366. are down.

  367. The next section

  368. shows why

  369. it was not yet time

  370. for Jesus

  371. to join

  372. the crowds

  373. of pilgrims

  374. who surely

  375. would have been

  376. alongside his brothers

  377. at the beginning

  378. of this very popular

  379. week-long feast

  380. in Jerusalem.

  381. It wasn't yet time

  382. for the culmination

  383. of Jesus' life.

  384. Entering Jerusalem

  385. there among the crowds

  386. almost certainly

  387. would have led

  388. to what it did

  389. a few months later,

  390. the triumphal entry

  391. at the Passover feast.

  392. Jesus waited

  393. on his father's timing

  394. and when things

  395. had calmed a bit

  396. after the big kickoff,

  397. verse 10,

  398. but after his brothers

  399. had gone up

  400. to the feast,

  401. then he also went up

  402. not publicly

  403. but in private.

  404. Right?

  405. Hear the difference?

  406. The Jews were looking

  407. for him at the feast

  408. and saying,

  409. where is he?

  410. And there was much

  411. muttering about him

  412. among the people.

  413. While some said

  414. he's a good man,

  415. others said,

  416. no, he's leading

  417. the people astray.

  418. Yet for fear

  419. of the Jews,

  420. no one spoke openly

  421. of him.

  422. The whole city

  423. is abuzz

  424. about Jesus.

  425. Even before he shows up,

  426. it's whether he's there

  427. or not.

  428. It's a testament

  429. to Jesus' power

  430. and his impact

  431. that no one

  432. ignores him.

  433. Religious leaders,

  434. the Jews,

  435. the crowds of people,

  436. they're all

  437. whispering about him.

  438. I can't believe

  439. I'm saying this right now

  440. but it reminds me

  441. of the current buzz

  442. about Taylor Swift.

  443. Will she come

  444. to the Super Bowl

  445. to cheer on her boyfriend?

  446. Y'all,

  447. there's more buzz,

  448. there are more articles

  449. about whether she

  450. will be present

  451. next week or not

  452. than any of the players

  453. on the field.

  454. Everyone's talking

  455. about it.

  456. Is Jesus coming

  457. to the feast?

  458. Where is he?

  459. Everyone has an opinion

  460. about Jesus.

  461. Good

  462. or bad.

  463. They've all

  464. seen or at least

  465. heard what he does

  466. and what he says.

  467. You can't ignore him.

  468. Imagine you're

  469. a young woman

  470. named Mary.

  471. You're walking

  472. the crowded streets

  473. of Jerusalem that day

  474. with your friends

  475. and you ask,

  476. hey,

  477. have you seen Jesus

  478. here yet?

  479. I want to see

  480. a miracle.

  481. And your friend says,

  482. I just want to hear

  483. him teach.

  484. I think he's so wise.

  485. But your third

  486. buddy comes along.

  487. Come on, y'all.

  488. He's just putting

  489. on a show.

  490. My dad says he'll

  491. never make our lives

  492. any better and I agree.

  493. People need to focus

  494. on working hard

  495. and making life better.

  496. Not about some

  497. crazy revolutionary.

  498. He's getting in the way.

  499. And you kind of

  500. have to agree.

  501. Yeah, I know.

  502. My parents told me

  503. not to get too close

  504. to him,

  505. especially if any

  506. rabbis were around.

  507. I don't want people

  508. to get the wrong idea.

  509. But I would love

  510. to see him do

  511. something cool.

  512. Isn't it interesting

  513. here?

  514. No one spoke

  515. openly about Jesus.

  516. Neither the ones

  517. who liked him

  518. nor the ones

  519. who didn't.

  520. They whispered

  521. much muttering.

  522. But they were afraid.

  523. They were afraid

  524. of the Jews.

  525. We get fearful

  526. when our comfort

  527. is at risk,

  528. don't we?

  529. Staying in just

  530. a non-committal

  531. unbelief here.

  532. I mean,

  533. I kind of like

  534. Jesus stuff.

  535. I don't mind

  536. going to church

  537. occasionally.

  538. But nothing loud

  539. or bold

  540. or life-altering

  541. or uncomfortable

  542. for me.

  543. like when I have

  544. the 153rd

  545. consecutive conversation

  546. with my neighbor

  547. about football

  548. and never mention

  549. Jesus.

  550. When at church

  551. I avoid the person

  552. I know is dealing

  553. with a really

  554. messy situation

  555. because I've got

  556. a busy week

  557. coming up

  558. and I don't know

  559. where that'll go.

  560. Like when I don't

  561. share honestly

  562. at Grace Group

  563. because talking

  564. honestly about my

  565. heart is

  566. uncomfortable

  567. and life's okay

  568. if I don't

  569. mess,

  570. let's not disrupt

  571. things too much,

  572. right?

  573. Don't make me

  574. talk about Jesus

  575. and our relationship

  576. openly.

  577. Who might hear?

  578. What might it cost me?

  579. How might it wreck

  580. my week?

  581. Mary might whisper,

  582. I love you Jesus

  583. but not that much.

  584. But then

  585. Jesus does show up

  586. midweek.

  587. Here's Jesus

  588. and he's going

  589. to expose

  590. the struggles

  591. religious church

  592. people specifically

  593. have with following

  594. him.

  595. Verse 14.

  596. About the middle

  597. of the feast

  598. Jesus went up

  599. into the temple

  600. and began teaching.

  601. The Jews therefore

  602. marveled saying

  603. how is it that

  604. this man has

  605. learning when

  606. he's never studied?

  607. So Jesus answered

  608. them,

  609. my teaching

  610. is not mine

  611. but his who sent

  612. me.

  613. If anyone's will

  614. is to do

  615. God's will

  616. he will know

  617. whether the teaching

  618. is from God

  619. or whether I'm

  620. speaking on my

  621. own authority.

  622. The one who speaks

  623. on his own authority

  624. seeks his own glory

  625. but the one who

  626. seeks the glory

  627. of him who sent

  628. him is true

  629. and in him

  630. there is no falsehood.

  631. Has not Moses

  632. given you the law?

  633. Yet none of you

  634. keeps the law.

  635. Why do you

  636. seek to kill me?

  637. And the crowd

  638. answered,

  639. you have a demon

  640. who's seeking

  641. to kill you?

  642. Jesus answered

  643. them,

  644. I did one deed

  645. and you all

  646. marvel at it.

  647. Moses gave you

  648. circumcision

  649. not that it's

  650. from Moses

  651. but from the

  652. fathers

  653. and you circumcise

  654. a man on the

  655. Sabbath.

  656. If on the

  657. Sabbath a man

  658. received circumcision

  659. so that the law

  660. of Moses

  661. may not be broken

  662. are you angry

  663. with me

  664. because on the

  665. Sabbath I made

  666. a man's whole

  667. body well?

  668. Do not judge

  669. by appearances

  670. but judge

  671. with right

  672. judgment.

  673. John doesn't

  674. even tell us

  675. what Jesus

  676. is teaching

  677. yet,

  678. that's coming

  679. later,

  680. but first

  681. he's dealing

  682. with our

  683. hearts.

  684. Imagine

  685. Nicodemus

  686. being there,

  687. one of the

  688. Pharisees

  689. who had met

  690. privately

  691. with Jesus

  692. and he'll speak

  693. up by the end

  694. of this chapter.

  695. Imagine you

  696. hear Jesus

  697. teach and your

  698. colleague turns

  699. to you at the

  700. end,

  701. shakes his

  702. head,

  703. not even a

  704. single rabbi

  705. referenced and

  706. he didn't even

  707. quote C.S.

  708. Lewis or Tim

  709. Keller,

  710. John Calvin,

  711. none of them.

  712. Who does he

  713. think he is?

  714. You're still

  715. kind of intrigued

  716. by Jesus and

  717. then as you're

  718. listening you hear

  719. he starts talking

  720. about the law

  721. of Moses and

  722. you hear someone

  723. in the crowd

  724. yell,

  725. who is seeking

  726. to kill you.

  727. I've heard a few

  728. discussions about

  729. that,

  730. you think?

  731. And then Jesus

  732. brings up the man

  733. that he healed

  734. on the Sabbath

  735. last year.

  736. No,

  737. Jesus,

  738. don't go there.

  739. It's so clearly

  740. against the law.

  741. Quit making things

  742. more complicated

  743. for me.

  744. We know what the

  745. law says and we

  746. do it.

  747. And if you're

  748. doing signs

  749. and also encouraging

  750. law breaking,

  751. you deserve to die

  752. as a false prophet.

  753. Now that is making

  754. me angry.

  755. Stop it!

  756. The love of our

  757. heart exposed

  758. here I think

  759. is our love

  760. for control.

  761. Hang with me

  762. control freaks.

  763. I am probably

  764. worse than you.

  765. It's not easy.

  766. What do we want?

  767. We want to know

  768. more

  769. or do more

  770. to control

  771. our lives,

  772. don't we?

  773. At times,

  774. if we're honest,

  775. to control God.

  776. Listen to Jesus'

  777. challenge in verse 17.

  778. If anyone's will

  779. is to do

  780. God's will,

  781. then he will know

  782. whether the teaching,

  783. the teaching Jesus

  784. is giving,

  785. is from God

  786. or whether I am

  787. speaking

  788. on my own

  789. authority.

  790. He's telling us

  791. to come to him,

  792. to listen to him

  793. with appropriate

  794. humility.

  795. He says,

  796. if you come

  797. to God,

  798. actually desiring

  799. to learn

  800. to follow

  801. God's will,

  802. then although

  803. it sounds

  804. upside down

  805. at times,

  806. although it doesn't

  807. seem comfortable

  808. at times,

  809. you'll find that

  810. it's actually

  811. what God wants

  812. for you

  813. and what you

  814. were made for

  815. if that's the way

  816. in which you

  817. come to his word

  818. and seek to

  819. listen to Jesus.

  820. But we like

  821. to think we

  822. know more.

  823. and crazy

  824. as it sounds,

  825. we like to

  826. evaluate Jesus'

  827. teaching on the

  828. basis of what

  829. we already know

  830. so that we

  831. stay in control.

  832. If it sounds

  833. like he's telling

  834. me to love

  835. the poor

  836. sacrificially,

  837. that can't be

  838. right.

  839. That's the

  840. liberal left.

  841. God wants my

  842. individual freedoms,

  843. I know that.

  844. And then I flip

  845. over,

  846. it sounds like

  847. he's telling me

  848. whom I can

  849. and can't

  850. be married to.

  851. That can't

  852. be right.

  853. That is the

  854. fundamentalist

  855. right again.

  856. God wants me

  857. to be happy,

  858. I know that.

  859. See how

  860. either of those

  861. will create

  862. a big struggle

  863. with following

  864. the real Jesus

  865. who doesn't

  866. fit in our

  867. nice boxes?

  868. But then

  869. what really

  870. gets us angry

  871. is when we

  872. obey,

  873. but things

  874. don't go

  875. the way

  876. we expect.

  877. Yes?

  878. Yeah?

  879. Uh-huh?

  880. We think

  881. God's promised

  882. us.

  883. And Jesus,

  884. in the midst

  885. of our great

  886. obedience

  887. and careful

  888. law-keeping,

  889. has the gall

  890. to tell us

  891. that we don't

  892. keep the law.

  893. What?

  894. He tells us

  895. we've been

  896. lost in the

  897. details and

  898. forgotten

  899. the main

  900. thing.

  901. The heart.

  902. Love for God.

  903. Love for

  904. neighbor.

  905. See,

  906. Moses codified

  907. the laws

  908. about circumcision

  909. that were

  910. given to

  911. Abraham.

  912. Circumcised,

  913. he said,

  914. on the eighth

  915. day.

  916. Whether it's

  917. the Sabbath

  918. or not,

  919. the Jews

  920. all agreed

  921. on that.

  922. That's what

  923. they taught.

  924. That makes

  925. sense,

  926. right?

  927. It's an

  928. important thing

  929. to do.

  930. But don't

  931. heal someone's

  932. whole body.

  933. You're missing

  934. the heart

  935. of the Sabbath,

  936. Jesus says.

  937. You've

  938. missed it.

  939. So for us,

  940. let me push

  941. us.

  942. Maybe it

  943. feels okay

  944. for us.

  945. Maybe it's

  946. okay to

  947. identify as

  948. selfish.

  949. My money

  950. for me.

  951. To identify

  952. as gluttonous.

  953. My food

  954. for me.

  955. To identify

  956. as impatient.

  957. My schedule

  958. for me.

  959. That's okay.

  960. But there

  961. are some

  962. things it's

  963. not okay

  964. to identify

  965. as, right?

  966. We clear?

  967. You got me?

  968. We know

  969. it's acceptable.

  970. So long

  971. as we know

  972. which things

  973. God's okay

  974. with,

  975. we can keep

  976. the rules,

  977. those rules.

  978. We're in

  979. control.

  980. Jesus says,

  981. don't assume

  982. your authority

  983. or control.

  984. don't come

  985. to me

  986. knowing

  987. more,

  988. doing

  989. more,

  990. thinking

  991. that's

  992. the way

  993. to get

  994. control.

  995. When Jesus

  996. says,

  997. my whole

  998. life screams,

  999. Yahweh,

  1000. my Father

  1001. is in

  1002. control.

  1003. We

  1004. submit

  1005. to Him.

  1006. We

  1007. rest in

  1008. His grace,

  1009. not our

  1010. performance.

  1011. When our

  1012. control is

  1013. threatened,

  1014. we are

  1015. tempted,

  1016. along with

  1017. Nicodemus,

  1018. to say,

  1019. I love you,

  1020. Jesus.

  1021. but not

  1022. that much.

  1023. So what do

  1024. we do?

  1025. That's a

  1026. mess.

  1027. That's a

  1028. mess in

  1029. here.

  1030. I suspect

  1031. we all see

  1032. some manifestations

  1033. of unbelief,

  1034. some competing

  1035. loves of

  1036. worldly

  1037. success,

  1038. selfish

  1039. comfort,

  1040. or religious

  1041. control.

  1042. We can see

  1043. those in our

  1044. hearts.

  1045. perhaps

  1046. feeling like

  1047. pride,

  1048. fear,

  1049. anger.

  1050. It's because

  1051. we can't

  1052. live for

  1053. someone whose

  1054. life works

  1055. against what

  1056. we love

  1057. most,

  1058. and Jesus

  1059. loves not

  1060. His own

  1061. life even

  1062. to death.

  1063. He eschews

  1064. worldly

  1065. success,

  1066. selfish comfort,

  1067. religious

  1068. control,

  1069. so following

  1070. Him is a

  1071. struggle.

  1072. Christian,

  1073. Christian,

  1074. non-Christian,

  1075. these loves

  1076. of your

  1077. heart are

  1078. keeping you

  1079. from following

  1080. Jesus.

  1081. That's what

  1082. you're experiencing.

  1083. That's what's

  1084. going on in

  1085. your heart.

  1086. What's the

  1087. treatment for

  1088. heart issues

  1089. like ones we

  1090. struggle with?

  1091. If it's not

  1092. just an

  1093. intellectual

  1094. matter,

  1095. you can't

  1096. merely argue

  1097. me into

  1098. following

  1099. Jesus.

  1100. You can't

  1101. just give

  1102. me a

  1103. formula that

  1104. convinces me

  1105. that it is

  1106. worth it to

  1107. invest all

  1108. that I have

  1109. in Him,

  1110. to be all

  1111. in with

  1112. Jesus,

  1113. and that

  1114. that's really

  1115. where life

  1116. is found.

  1117. So what

  1118. do I do?

  1119. Well,

  1120. come back

  1121. next week

  1122. is one

  1123. answer,

  1124. because Jesus

  1125. Himself explains

  1126. more of who

  1127. He is and

  1128. how that gives

  1129. us hope,

  1130. and I hope

  1131. you will,

  1132. but there are

  1133. a couple

  1134. things already

  1135. pointed to

  1136. here in the

  1137. midst of the

  1138. many struggles

  1139. we see with

  1140. following Jesus.

  1141. The treatment

  1142. for our

  1143. hearts is

  1144. repentance and

  1145. faith.

  1146. See,

  1147. what we're

  1148. talking about

  1149. this morning

  1150. is besetting

  1151. sins in

  1152. our hearts,

  1153. right?

  1154. The love of

  1155. control,

  1156. of comfort,

  1157. of success.

  1158. These are

  1159. idols that

  1160. we sometimes

  1161. love more

  1162. than we love

  1163. Jesus.

  1164. At the end

  1165. of the day,

  1166. it's really

  1167. the idol of

  1168. self,

  1169. isn't it?

  1170. It's all

  1171. about me,

  1172. my control,

  1173. my comfort,

  1174. my success,

  1175. so we

  1176. fight idols

  1177. like that

  1178. by pleading

  1179. with God

  1180. to turn

  1181. our hearts

  1182. from the

  1183. love of

  1184. self

  1185. back to

  1186. Jesus

  1187. because some

  1188. of our

  1189. great loves

  1190. have to

  1191. die.

  1192. If they

  1193. remain our

  1194. greatest loves,

  1195. we will

  1196. never embrace

  1197. Jesus.

  1198. And so we

  1199. look back at

  1200. Jesus and

  1201. we realize that

  1202. he has come

  1203. to displace

  1204. these loves

  1205. by actually

  1206. loving us

  1207. more than

  1208. we love

  1209. ourselves.

  1210. See,

  1211. there will

  1212. be a day,

  1213. it may not

  1214. be this one

  1215. where his

  1216. brothers are

  1217. talking to

  1218. him,

  1219. but there

  1220. will be a

  1221. day when

  1222. Jesus will

  1223. make a

  1224. public

  1225. showcase

  1226. in Jerusalem

  1227. to show

  1228. himself to

  1229. the world,

  1230. to display

  1231. his glory,

  1232. just not in

  1233. the way his

  1234. family suggested,

  1235. right?

  1236. he will

  1237. go to the

  1238. cross.

  1239. Thankfully,

  1240. we now can

  1241. gaze on

  1242. Jesus and

  1243. realize that

  1244. he never got

  1245. to the point

  1246. of saying,

  1247. I love you,

  1248. but not that

  1249. much.

  1250. No,

  1251. that's not

  1252. what he says.

  1253. He instead

  1254. keeps going.

  1255. He pursued

  1256. glory through

  1257. suffering.

  1258. He purchased

  1259. our ultimate

  1260. comfort through

  1261. deep pain.

  1262. He put down

  1263. control of

  1264. his own life

  1265. that we

  1266. might live

  1267. forever.

  1268. Therein is

  1269. love,

  1270. amen?

  1271. That's what

  1272. love looks

  1273. like,

  1274. John tells

  1275. us.

  1276. Love so

  1277. transformative

  1278. that success-hungry

  1279. James sees the

  1280. most amazing

  1281. work Jesus

  1282. ever performs

  1283. on his

  1284. behalf at

  1285. the cross

  1286. and is

  1287. inspired to

  1288. give his

  1289. own life

  1290. as a

  1291. martyr for

  1292. that life-changing

  1293. reality of

  1294. that love.

  1295. So transformative

  1296. that comfortable

  1297. risk-averse

  1298. Mary meets

  1299. the risen

  1300. Jesus and

  1301. can't stop

  1302. sharing with

  1303. anyone who

  1304. will listen

  1305. the good

  1306. news of

  1307. the Messiah

  1308. who brings

  1309. eternal hope

  1310. and comfort

  1311. in relationship

  1312. with him even

  1313. in the face

  1314. of death.

  1315. So transformative

  1316. that controlling

  1317. religious Nicodemus

  1318. finally starts

  1319. seeing what the

  1320. new birth that

  1321. Jesus talked

  1322. with him about

  1323. really means

  1324. that the son

  1325. of man must

  1326. be lifted up

  1327. on the tree.

  1328. Oh I see it

  1329. now Nicodemus

  1330. says and

  1331. when we

  1332. believe in

  1333. him we

  1334. find new

  1335. and eternal

  1336. life.

  1337. He is the

  1338. one that's

  1339. where life

  1340. is found.

  1341. Love so

  1342. transformative

  1343. that he dies

  1344. for success-hungry

  1345. comfort-seeking

  1346. control-obsessed

  1347. people like you

  1348. and me so

  1349. that we can

  1350. even today

  1351. find his

  1352. love most

  1353. fulfilling and

  1354. his life

  1355. eternally

  1356. satisfying.

  1357. I pray we

  1359. Father,

  1360. so work in

  1361. our hearts

  1362. that Christ

  1363. would be our

  1365. that knowing

  1366. that he is

  1367. ours and

  1368. we are his

  1369. forevermore

  1370. would thrill

  1371. our hearts

  1372. as a result

  1373. would change

  1374. our lives,

  1375. would free

  1376. us from the

  1377. idols that we

  1378. cling to,

  1379. and would

  1380. inspire us to

  1381. live for him.

  1382. Holy Spirit,

  1383. help our

  1384. hearts.

  1385. Give us

  1386. faith.

  1387. faith.

  1388. That believes

  1389. hope in

  1390. Jesus,

  1391. not hope in

  1392. me.

  1393. That believes

  1394. glory to

  1395. come,

  1396. not glory

  1397. now.

  1398. That believes

  1399. comfort then

  1400. and forever

  1401. even if I

  1402. don't taste

  1403. it here.

  1404. Help us,

  1405. we ask,

  1406. in Jesus'

  1407. name,

  1408. for his

  1409. glory.

  1410. Amen.
