  1. You are listening to a message from Southwood Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama.

  2. Our passion is to experience and express grace.

  3. Join us.

  4. We've been studying John's gospel to encounter Jesus, to know who he is, what he says, what

  5. he does, how he impacts us.

  6. This is someone that nearly everyone agrees is one of the most influential people in all

  7. of human history.

  8. What does that mean for me, for my family, for my neighbors?

  9. We're going to encounter Jesus again today in Jerusalem for the Feast of Booths.

  10. He's been there, as we've studied, offering himself as the solution to the thirst of the

  11. hearts of the people there, as the light of the world shining in their darkness, the deliverer

  12. to set them free from their bondage to sin.

  13. And the response has been split.

  14. Some talking of killing him.

  15. Others, we're told, believing in him at some level.

  16. Now he's finishing up this interaction with people in many ways like us.

  17. People interested in Jesus, gathered in the temple talking about God.

  18. And Jesus has some really challenging words for them, for us.

  19. We're going to pick up the reading of God's holy word in John 8 at verse 39, reading just

  20. the first portion of this now and the rest of the chapter later.

  21. The people have just said, Jesus, we are children of Abraham, so we don't really need to be set

  22. free.

  23. And Jesus has responded, I know you come from Abraham, but you're trying to kill me.

  24. You're doing what you have heard from your father.

  25. Verse 39, they answered him, Abraham is our father.

  26. Jesus said to them, if you were Abraham's children, you would be doing what Abraham did.

  27. But now you seek to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God.

  28. This is not what Abraham did.

  29. You are doing what your father did.

  30. They said to him, we were not born of sexual immorality.

  31. We have one father, even God.

  32. Jesus said to them, if God were your father, you would love me.

  33. For I came from God and I am here.

  34. I came not of my own accord, but he sent me.

  35. Why do you not understand what I say?

  36. It is because you cannot bear to hear my word.

  37. You are of your father, the devil, and your will is to do your father's desires.

  38. He was a murderer from the beginning and has nothing to do with the truth because there

  39. is no truth in him.

  40. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies.

  41. But because I tell the truth, you do not believe me.

  42. Which one of you convicts me of sin?

  43. If I tell the truth, why do you not believe me?

  44. Whoever is of God hears the words of God.

  45. The reason why you do not hear them is that you are not of God.

  46. Pray with me.

  47. Father, would you give us ears to hear?

  48. To hear your voice.

  49. To hear words that could even feel like words of death to us.

  50. Would they be by your spirit this morning?

  51. Words of life.

  52. Speak, Jesus.

  53. And help us to listen.

  54. We ask in your name.

  55. Amen.

  56. Amen.

  57. I was getting my hair cut a few months ago when it came out that I was a pastor.

  58. Happens sometimes.

  59. My stylist asked, what kind?

  60. I love that question.

  61. The kind that needs Jesus a lot.

  62. That kind.

  63. It's awkward, yeah.

  64. Yeah, but like do you have a church nearby?

  65. Oh, yeah.

  66. Yeah, it's just over the hill.

  67. Southwood Presbyterian.

  68. Oh, that was the answer he was looking for.

  69. You know, my grandfather was a Methodist pastor for many years.

  70. Several different churches here in Alabama.

  71. In fact, I was just at one of them not long ago.

  72. So I said, oh, that's so cool.

  73. You're a Christian too?

  74. He looked at me as though I had three heads.

  75. I think that what he was thinking was, are you not listening to me?

  76. I just told you that I lived in Alabama, that my grandfather was a pastor, and that I've been in a church building recently.

  77. What are you not hearing?

  78. How could I make it any clearer to you that I'm a Christian?

  79. I think the crowds in this passage are feeling something very similar.

  80. Jesus, are you not listening?

  81. Abraham is our father.

  82. We're good.

  83. And then Jesus presses more, and they say, okay, listen, we have one father, even God.

  84. It's another version of what we'll call this morning natural Christianity.

  85. I'm good with God because of my proximity to the things of God.

  86. Near the temple, being near the promises, near the people of God.

  87. Abraham doesn't get any closer than that, right?

  88. I came by this naturally.

  89. I'm born into it, they're saying.

  90. Natural Christianity claims God by association.

  91. We run in the same circles, so to speak.

  92. It's a cultural Christianity based largely on being around the right sorts of things and the right kinds of people.

  93. And I don't think I have to tell you, this is all around us still today in Huntsville, Alabama.

  94. How did you become a Christian?

  95. Just naturally because you started hanging around some church people?

  96. How would you describe your relationship with God?

  97. Has it just been in the family for generations?

  98. Listen to what they say to Jesus, verse 41.

  99. Hey, it is your heritage, not ours, that's questionable.

  100. Do you hear what they're saying?

  101. We are okay on our own with God.

  102. Just like we don't need to be set free, we don't need help to get in with God.

  103. We are already associated with Him.

  104. Maybe you just don't know us well enough.

  105. Maybe when I ask how you are a Christian, you think,

  106. I'm connected to the right political party.

  107. I mean, I send my kids to the right school.

  108. Listen, pastor, of course I'm a Christian.

  109. I'm not a Muslim or a Hindu.

  110. I don't even look like...

  111. Watch out.

  112. Watch out, Jesus says.

  113. Being in with God is not about appearances.

  114. It's not about associations.

  115. It's about your heart.

  116. Verse 42.

  117. Jesus said to them,

  118. If God were your father,

  119. here's what would happen.

  120. You would love me.

  121. Natural, okay on my own Christianity,

  122. talks about God,

  123. but doesn't love what God loves,

  124. especially whom?

  125. Jesus.

  126. You can't even bear to hear His word, He says.

  127. To submit to His direction.

  128. You're not doing the works of Abraham.

  129. What did Abraham do?

  130. He believed God.

  131. Right?

  132. And he followed after God,

  133. even when he was called to go to an uncertain future

  134. in a land that he'd never seen,

  135. he believed and followed God,

  136. even when it seemed crazy.

  137. Do you love following Jesus,

  138. even when it's hard?

  139. Finding comfort and life in God's word.

  140. See, it's not merely a natural association.

  141. Something has to change about what you love.

  142. Kids, I want to talk to you

  143. for a couple of minutes this morning.

  144. You can listen the whole time,

  145. but I especially want you to listen right now.

  146. Especially if you've grown up in the church.

  147. Many of you have been baptized

  148. like little Jimmy was here this morning.

  149. A whole bunch of you have just recently

  150. finished the communicants class.

  151. And so you're spending a lot of time right now

  152. thinking about your own relationship with God.

  153. And that is awesome.

  154. I'm so excited about that.

  155. You need to remember that Jesus loves you.

  156. And Jesus wants a relationship with you

  157. where it doesn't just happen in one moment,

  158. but where it continues growing every day

  159. the rest of your life.

  160. You learn more of how he loves you.

  161. And he grows in you a love for him.

  162. That's what Jesus wants for you this morning.

  163. But that's not just automatic.

  164. That doesn't just happen automatically

  165. because you sit in this church building

  166. or because you get water poured on your head

  167. or because you know lots of information

  168. and sit in a class and learn stuff about God.

  169. I want you to imagine that you're born

  170. into an Auburn family, okay?

  171. Some of you don't even have to imagine.

  172. Your parents love Auburn

  173. and they tell you stories of the kick six

  174. and how great Auburn is

  175. and they teach you to say war eagle.

  176. But then as you grow up,

  177. you become an Alabama fan

  178. and you start yelling roll tide

  179. during the Iron Bowl.

  180. Can you imagine?

  181. That can happen, doesn't it?

  182. Just growing up around Auburn stuff

  183. doesn't automatically make you love Auburn, does it?

  184. Being born into a Christian family

  185. and around Christian stuff

  186. doesn't automatically make you love Jesus.

  187. Okay?

  188. Kids, you have been brought up

  189. in the story of the God who loves you so much

  190. that he sent his only begotten son

  191. to save you

  192. so that you could be with him forever.

  193. What a great gift it is.

  194. Praise Jesus

  195. that you've been born into this family

  196. where you don't have to wonder

  197. what to do when you fail

  198. or does anyone love me

  199. or is there a group that I can really belong with?

  200. Is there any hope in this world?

  201. You've been living in that your whole life.

  202. You know someone loves you.

  203. You know you belong here in the family of God.

  204. But being born into this family

  205. doesn't automatically make you love Jesus.

  206. God doesn't have a relationship with you

  207. because of how many times you've gone to Sunday school

  208. or how many answers you can give to Bible questions.

  209. That's not how it works.

  210. He is calling you, not your parents,

  211. he is calling you to trust him,

  212. to follow him

  213. and we celebrate when you follow Jesus yourself,

  214. when you trust him,

  215. when you confess your sins

  216. and receive his forgiveness,

  217. when you read his word,

  218. when you shine his light,

  219. we celebrate that with you.

  220. You know that?

  221. Oh, Father,

  222. keep working in our children.

  223. Keep working in their hearts

  224. that they might see you and love you

  225. and know more tomorrow than they do today

  226. how much you love them.

  227. Please, Father,

  228. for Jesus' sake,

  229. show them more of yourself.

  230. Give them joy in following you.

  231. Sorry, I didn't mean to pray that long

  232. and a false end to the sermon

  233. tricked some of you.

  234. No matter how old you are,

  235. Jesus is not trying to scare you off from him

  236. with strong words this morning.

  237. He is about to tell the same crowd

  238. hearing these hard words

  239. how they can know life forever.

  240. So language like,

  241. verse 44,

  242. you are of your father,

  243. the devil,

  244. should never be weaponized

  245. against Jewish people specifically

  246. as it sadly has been.

  247. It is about any

  248. who reject Jesus,

  249. who lie about him

  250. in order to kill him.

  251. That's what he's talking about.

  252. It's just in this conversation

  253. they also happen to be Jews

  254. that he's talking with.

  255. What we need to hear

  256. is that Jesus is actually calling

  257. all of us

  258. to consider our hearts.

  259. That's my desire this morning.

  260. It's not to create crippling doubt

  261. in those of you

  262. who already know

  263. and love and trust Jesus,

  264. but to push all of us

  265. to Jesus

  266. so that we talk with him honestly

  267. about whether or not

  268. we are Christians.

  269. He and I are pushing us

  270. not to be good enough

  271. or to check our associations with God

  272. and see if they're strong enough

  273. and up to date,

  274. but rather to come to Jesus

  275. and look at what he says

  276. is true Christianity.

  277. The strong warnings here

  278. that we need to hear

  279. are to expose false hope.

  280. And so when they do that,

  281. they show us how much we need

  282. the real thing,

  283. which is what Jesus offers.

  284. Okay, that's why he speaks

  285. so directly.

  286. If we're going to call ourselves

  287. Christians,

  288. what does Christ say that means?

  289. I'll call it supernatural Christianity

  290. in contrast with the born into it

  291. by association version

  292. that we've been talking about.

  293. Listen to the rest of this interaction

  294. as the crowd turns its focus on Jesus

  295. and his identity.

  296. Verse 48.

  297. The Jews answered him,

  298. Are we not right in saying

  299. that you are a Samaritan

  300. and have a demon?

  301. Jesus answered,

  302. I do not have a demon,

  303. but I honor my father

  304. and you dishonor me.

  305. Yet I do not seek my own glory.

  306. There is one who seeks it

  307. and he is the judge.

  308. Truly, truly, I say to you,

  309. if anyone keeps my word,

  310. he will never see death.

  311. The Jews said to him,

  312. Now we know that you have a demon.

  313. Abraham died,

  314. as did the prophets.

  315. Yet you say,

  316. If anyone keeps my word,

  317. he will never taste death.

  318. Are you greater than our father Abraham

  319. who died?

  320. And the prophets died.

  321. Who do you make yourself out to be?

  322. Jesus answered,

  323. If I glorify myself,

  324. my glory is nothing.

  325. It is my father who glorifies me,

  326. of whom you say,

  327. He is our God.

  328. But you have not known him.

  329. I know him.

  330. If I were to say that I do not know him,

  331. I would be a liar like you.

  332. But I do know him

  333. and I keep his word.

  334. Your father Abraham rejoiced

  335. that he would see my day.

  336. He saw it and was glad.

  337. So the Jews said to him,

  338. You are not yet 50 years old

  339. and have you seen Abraham?

  340. Jesus said to them,

  341. Truly, truly, I say to you,

  342. before Abraham was,

  343. I am.

  344. So they picked up stones

  345. to throw at him.

  346. But Jesus hid himself

  347. and went out of the temple.

  348. Two key questions there

  349. in verse 53,

  350. from the crowd.

  351. Are you greater than the prophets?

  352. Who do you make yourself out to be?

  353. It's a good question.

  354. Supernatural Christianity

  355. focuses on Jesus.

  356. Jesus.

  357. His association with,

  358. even we'll see,

  359. identification with God.

  360. And says,

  361. that's what it's all about.

  362. That's how Jesus can say

  363. in verse 51

  364. that anyone

  365. connected to him

  366. is connected to God.

  367. Listen, friends,

  368. please don't miss this.

  369. This is such good news,

  370. especially if you're not

  371. particularly religious

  372. or churchy.

  373. If that's how you wouldn't

  374. describe yourself,

  375. you don't even need

  376. association with God

  377. by birth,

  378. by culture,

  379. by morality.

  380. That's not what's required.

  381. Christianity,

  382. focused on Jesus,

  383. says if anyone,

  384. anyone,

  385. keeps my word,

  386. believes in me,

  387. he will never see death.

  388. What a promise.

  389. What amazing hope

  390. if you came in with none

  391. and thought you were going to

  392. have to find some somewhere,

  393. some relative

  394. who used to do something for God.

  395. No.

  396. You find Jesus

  397. to be the only one

  398. you need.

  399. See, what Jesus is saying

  400. is that supernatural Christianity,

  401. Christianity focused on Jesus,

  402. claims God only

  403. by adoption.

  404. We don't deserve to be in.

  405. We don't naturally belong

  406. in God's family,

  407. even if we hang around a lot,

  408. but he graciously

  409. welcomes us in

  410. because of our relationship

  411. with his one and only

  412. true son.

  413. That's how it works.

  414. This true Christianity

  415. not only focuses on Jesus,

  416. but also loves the Jesus

  417. that the Father loves.

  418. What I mean by that

  419. is a Jesus

  420. who is the divine,

  421. eternal son of God.

  422. It's not just

  423. who he makes himself out to be,

  424. it's who he is.

  425. Friends, look at the miracles,

  426. the signs,

  427. the loving,

  428. pure,

  429. righteous

  430. life.

  431. He says,

  432. you can't even

  433. convict me of sin,

  434. so why would you

  435. suspect that I'm lying

  436. to you now

  437. when I say these things?

  438. He's so good.

  439. Whom else

  440. could the Father

  441. himself

  442. seek

  443. to glorify?

  444. Verse 54,

  445. can you believe it?

  446. The Father

  447. and the Son

  448. here are clearly

  449. not the same,

  450. but clearly

  451. equal

  452. in glory.

  453. The Father

  454. is glorifying

  455. the Son.

  456. That's how

  457. Jesus can say

  458. that Abraham

  459. rejoiced

  460. at seeing his day.

  461. He's the promised

  462. seed

  463. to bless the nations.

  464. Abraham heard about him.

  465. This is the one

  466. to fulfill

  467. all of God's promises.

  468. And Jesus says,

  469. let me tell you

  470. how that's possible.

  471. Before Abraham

  472. was,

  473. not

  474. I was,

  475. he could have said that,

  476. but what?

  477. I

  478. am.

  479. As the crowd

  480. clearly recognizes,

  481. Jesus has taken him

  482. all the way back

  483. to Exodus,

  484. to Exodus 3,

  485. the name of Yahweh,

  486. God's personal name

  487. by which he introduced

  488. himself

  489. to his people.

  490. This guy

  491. is claiming

  492. equality with God

  493. and the crowd

  494. says,

  495. blasphemy.

  496. They're now hearing

  497. Jesus clearly,

  498. aren't they?

  499. He is tying together

  500. everything that he's

  501. been telling them

  502. at this feast

  503. that we've been talking

  504. about the last few weeks.

  505. This feast

  506. where they have gathered

  507. to celebrate

  508. God's deliverance

  509. in the past,

  510. to celebrate

  511. God's promise

  512. of a deliverer

  513. coming in the future.

  514. And Jesus stands

  515. and says,

  516. not only am I

  517. the bread of life

  518. more fulfilling

  519. than anything

  520. your fathers ate

  521. in the wilderness,

  522. not only am I

  523. the source

  524. of living waters

  525. pictured by the water

  526. flowing out of that

  527. rock that Moses struck,

  528. not only am I

  529. the light of the world

  530. to guide you

  531. like the pillar of fire

  532. in the dark wilderness,

  533. but also

  534. I am

  535. Yahweh

  536. himself.

  537. God

  538. has come

  539. to be

  540. with you.

  541. The one who

  542. appeared in the burning bush

  543. to Moses

  544. who powerfully

  545. delivered his people

  546. across the Red Sea

  547. who tabernacled

  548. with them

  549. as they wandered

  550. who finally brought

  551. them all the way

  552. to the promised land.

  553. I am the one

  554. you're gathered here

  555. to celebrate

  556. Jesus says.

  557. God

  558. come to you

  559. tabernacling now

  560. in the flesh.

  561. Do you hear

  562. what I'm saying?

  563. truly, truly

  564. I am the one

  565. who gives life.

  566. God

  567. the Father

  568. is glorifying

  569. me.

  570. Truly, truly

  571. before Abraham

  572. was,

  573. I am.

  574. The divine

  575. claims

  576. Jesus is making

  577. could not

  578. be clearer.

  579. Are you hearing

  580. what he's saying?

  581. What he's telling you

  582. is that he existed

  583. in perfect relationship

  584. with the Father

  585. and King

  586. of the universe

  587. before the world

  588. began,

  589. before time

  590. began.

  591. He's telling you

  592. that he is the one

  593. who spoke the universe

  594. into existence,

  595. who shaped the sun,

  596. who called the stars

  597. out by name,

  598. who breathed life

  599. into mankind.

  600. And then

  601. he entered

  602. this creation

  603. so that anyone

  604. who believed

  605. in him

  606. would become

  607. a child

  608. of God,

  609. brought into

  610. the family

  611. not by natural

  612. association,

  613. but by

  614. supernatural

  615. intervention,

  616. born,

  617. remember,

  618. of God.

  619. Not by human

  620. achievement,

  621. but by divine

  622. adoption.

  623. There is now

  624. no other name

  625. under heaven

  626. given to men

  627. by which we

  628. must be saved.

  629. Praise

  630. the name

  631. of Jesus.

  632. There's

  633. something about

  634. that name,

  635. the only

  636. name

  637. whereby

  638. we must

  639. be saved.

  640. Give

  641. me

  642. Jesus.

  643. Oh,

  644. how I love

  645. Jesus

  646. because he

  647. first loved

  648. me.

  649. Without

  650. his love

  651. I am

  652. lost.

  653. I am

  654. lost.

  655. What Jesus

  656. does here

  657. intentionally

  658. is leave us

  659. with very few

  660. options

  661. in regard

  662. to him.

  663. His claims

  664. to deity

  665. are so

  666. clear

  667. and so

  668. fantastical

  669. that the

  670. response of

  671. this crowd

  672. is what?

  673. Kill him.

  674. And he slips

  675. away.

  676. We already

  677. know when

  678. his hour

  679. comes he

  680. will be

  681. lifted up

  682. to die.

  683. But as

  684. Pastor Tim

  685. Keller

  686. often said

  687. echoing

  688. centuries

  689. of

  690. theologians

  691. it's

  692. kill him

  693. or crown

  694. him.

  695. There is

  696. no middle

  697. ground

  698. with Jesus.

  699. No

  700. natural

  701. cultural

  702. Christianity

  703. option

  704. remaining

  705. to us

  706. because

  707. cultural

  708. Christianity

  709. rejects

  710. this

  711. Jesus.

  712. Remember

  713. we don't

  714. need him

  715. there.

  716. We're in

  717. naturally

  718. by association.

  719. So at

  720. best we're

  721. kind of

  722. okay with

  723. Jesus.

  724. But thinking

  725. about him

  726. is mostly

  727. a Sunday

  728. activity.

  729. Only

  730. fanatics

  731. would follow

  732. after him

  733. in daily

  734. sacrifice.

  735. Oh yeah

  736. and if you

  737. want to find

  738. God and

  739. hope and

  740. life some

  741. other way

  742. with other

  743. religious

  744. associations

  745. that you

  746. have more

  747. naturally

  748. no problem

  749. Jesus is

  750. cool with

  751. that.

  752. No big

  753. deal.

  754. No.

  755. No.

  756. That is

  757. not a

  758. Christianity

  759. that Jesus

  760. or the

  761. Bible

  762. recognizes.

  763. If we

  764. don't

  765. kill Jesus

  766. for his

  767. blasphemy

  768. we must

  769. crown him

  770. king.

  771. Bow at

  772. his feet

  773. and in

  774. humble

  775. worship

  776. live by

  777. his word

  778. for his

  779. glory.

  780. That is

  781. the first

  782. difference

  783. that

  784. supernatural

  785. Christianity

  786. makes.

  787. It removes

  788. the option

  789. of our

  790. being okay

  791. on our

  792. own

  793. finding the

  794. God of

  795. the Bible

  796. apart from

  797. Jesus

  798. some other

  799. way.

  800. Now if we

  801. stop to

  802. think about

  803. that question

  804. what difference

  805. does it

  806. make?

  807. I'm

  808. gods by

  809. association

  810. versus

  811. I'm gods

  812. by adoption.

  813. The answer

  814. is all

  815. the difference

  816. in the

  817. world.

  818. It's

  819. life or

  820. death

  821. difference.

  822. There's

  823. so many

  824. ways that

  825. we could

  826. talk about

  827. the difference

  828. it makes

  829. but Jesus

  830. highlights

  831. one in

  832. this passage

  833. that I

  834. want to

  835. reflect on

  836. briefly

  837. as we

  838. close.

  839. It's

  840. verse 51.

  841. Truly

  842. truly

  843. I say

  844. to you

  845. if anyone

  846. keeps my

  847. word he

  848. will never

  849. see

  850. death.

  851. What's

  852. Jesus

  853. promising

  854. those who

  855. come to

  856. him?

  857. that what

  858. we think

  859. of as

  860. death

  861. life

  862. ending

  863. will

  864. never

  865. happen

  866. to those

  867. who receive

  868. the life

  869. that he

  870. gives us.

  871. The life

  872. he's been

  873. talking about

  874. because that

  875. life is

  876. now defined

  877. by Jesus

  878. as knowing

  879. God.

  880. Living in

  881. relationship

  882. with him

  883. being free

  884. from the

  885. power of

  886. sin to

  887. live the

  888. way that

  889. we were

  890. created to

  891. live and

  892. when our

  893. hearts stop

  894. beating

  895. here in

  896. this world

  897. that life

  898. doesn't

  899. stop.

  900. Instantly

  901. that life

  902. continues with

  903. Jesus forever

  904. absent from

  905. the body

  906. present with

  907. the Lord

  908. alive forever

  909. never more

  910. to die.

  911. And that

  912. makes all the

  913. difference in

  914. the world

  915. now

  916. because we

  917. know what

  918. it's like to

  919. live with the

  920. fear of death

  921. don't we?

  922. to be anxious

  923. about the

  924. next cancer

  925. scan

  926. to worry

  927. about gun

  928. violence

  929. to try

  930. desperately

  931. to forestall

  932. aging in a

  933. hundred ways

  934. anything we

  935. can come up

  936. with.

  937. The Bible

  938. says we

  939. all fear

  940. death

  941. and

  942. Jesus

  943. frees us

  944. from it.

  945. Hebrews

  946. 2.14

  947. Jesus

  948. took on

  949. flesh

  950. he actually

  951. came so

  952. that through

  953. death

  954. he might

  955. destroy

  956. the devil

  957. and deliver

  958. all those

  959. who through

  960. the fear

  961. of death

  962. were subject

  963. to lifelong

  964. slavery.

  965. Lifelong

  966. slavery

  967. because we

  968. fear death

  969. all of us

  970. specifically

  971. so sweet

  972. in light of

  973. our passage

  974. the offspring

  975. of Abraham

  976. need to be

  977. set free

  978. us

  979. listen

  980. it is the

  981. truth of

  982. Jesus

  983. that sets

  984. us free

  985. when the

  986. son sets

  987. you free

  988. you are

  989. free

  990. indeed

  991. that is the

  992. only way

  993. to true

  994. freedom

  995. from this

  996. universal

  997. fear

  998. because Jesus

  999. conquers

  1000. death

  1001. on our

  1002. behalf

  1003. you got

  1004. that right

  1005. in Hebrews

  1006. 2

  1007. the only way

  1008. is that

  1009. through

  1010. death

  1011. he could

  1012. conquer it

  1013. naturally

  1014. on our

  1015. own

  1016. death

  1017. haunts

  1018. us

  1019. the only

  1020. way

  1021. he can

  1022. guarantee

  1023. that we

  1024. won't see

  1025. death

  1026. is that

  1027. he takes

  1028. it

  1029. for us

  1030. so that

  1031. we can

  1032. live

  1033. with the

  1034. confidence

  1035. of people

  1036. who know

  1037. that no

  1038. matter what

  1039. happens

  1040. our life

  1041. our true

  1042. life

  1043. our

  1044. abundant

  1045. life

  1046. our eternal

  1047. life

  1048. goes

  1049. on

  1050. oh

  1051. death

  1052. where is

  1053. your

  1054. victory

  1055. oh

  1056. death

  1057. where is

  1058. your

  1059. sting

  1060. now listen

  1061. of course

  1062. we also

  1063. grieve

  1064. the loss

  1065. of loved

  1066. ones

  1067. here

  1068. so does

  1069. Jesus

  1070. by the way

  1071. we're getting

  1072. to that

  1073. in a few

  1074. weeks

  1075. but what

  1076. he's saying

  1077. is that

  1078. those

  1079. left

  1080. behind

  1081. are the

  1082. ones

  1083. who

  1084. grieve

  1085. the one

  1086. who dies

  1087. keeps

  1088. living

  1089. with me

  1090. forever

  1091. you will

  1092. never

  1093. see

  1094. death

  1095. you'll

  1096. see the

  1097. lamb

  1098. who is

  1099. the

  1100. light

  1101. of the

  1102. heavenly

  1103. city

  1104. you'll

  1105. taste

  1106. divine

  1107. delight

  1108. and a

  1109. perfectly

  1110. restored

  1111. creation

  1112. you'll

  1113. see a

  1114. restored

  1115. body

  1116. and all

  1117. those

  1118. tears

  1119. will be

  1120. wiped

  1121. away

  1122. forever

  1123. by the

  1124. hands

  1125. that stretched

  1126. out on the

  1127. cross

  1128. to conquer

  1129. death

  1130. to free

  1131. you

  1132. from the

  1133. fear

  1134. of death

  1135. forever

  1136. so look

  1137. what he's

  1138. offering

  1139. us

  1140. freedom

  1141. from that

  1142. big

  1143. fear

  1144. the fear

  1145. of death

  1146. and therefore

  1147. all the

  1148. smaller

  1149. fears

  1150. beneath it

  1151. today

  1152. now

  1153. I am

  1154. freed

  1155. from

  1156. safe

  1157. self-centered

  1158. self-protective

  1159. living

  1160. where I cling

  1161. desperately

  1162. to every

  1163. day

  1164. I can keep

  1165. myself

  1166. safe

  1167. and alive

  1168. and looking

  1169. young

  1170. freed

  1171. to live

  1172. boldly

  1173. and

  1174. adventurously

  1175. and risk

  1176. taking

  1177. for Jesus

  1178. to fail

  1179. and still

  1180. find hope

  1181. I'm

  1182. freed

  1183. to slow

  1184. down

  1185. with God

  1186. and be

  1187. with him

  1188. since

  1189. he made

  1190. me

  1191. to live

  1192. with him

  1193. I don't

  1194. have to

  1195. rush

  1196. around

  1197. to find

  1198. something

  1199. else

  1200. before it's

  1201. too late

  1202. and I miss

  1203. out on

  1204. real life

  1205. no

  1206. I've

  1207. got it

  1208. freed

  1209. to sacrifice

  1210. in ways

  1211. that inspire

  1212. to give

  1213. generously

  1214. to others

  1215. it's two

  1216. for one

  1217. orphan year

  1218. Southwood

  1219. did you

  1220. forget

  1221. if the

  1222. father has

  1223. adopted

  1224. you into

  1225. his family

  1226. your resources

  1227. of life

  1228. are endless

  1229. you will

  1230. never

  1231. taste

  1232. death

  1233. your resources

  1234. of time

  1235. are

  1236. endless

  1237. it doesn't

  1238. feel

  1239. that way

  1240. but it

  1241. is true

  1242. and you

  1243. can use

  1244. some of

  1245. your time

  1246. to listen

  1247. to

  1248. to love

  1249. to point

  1250. others

  1251. to this

  1252. glorious

  1253. divine

  1254. eternal

  1255. Jesus

  1256. see if

  1257. you know

  1258. Jesus

  1259. then you

  1260. find yourself

  1261. as a part

  1262. of his

  1263. church

  1264. whether you

  1265. like it

  1266. or not

  1267. and so

  1268. you're going

  1269. to find

  1270. yourself

  1271. surrounded

  1272. at times

  1273. by people

  1274. who know

  1275. Jesus

  1276. only by

  1277. association

  1278. they see

  1279. themselves

  1280. as Christians

  1281. by association

  1282. and they're

  1283. going to keep

  1284. showing up

  1285. in your life

  1286. all the time

  1287. and you can

  1288. point them

  1289. to the one

  1290. who truly

  1291. sets us

  1292. free

  1293. and gives

  1294. us life

  1295. can't you

  1296. what a joy

  1297. friends

  1298. some of you

  1299. here today

  1300. need

  1301. to be set

  1302. free

  1303. by this

  1304. supernatural

  1305. Jesus

  1306. there's a

  1307. life or death

  1308. distinction

  1309. between

  1310. being

  1311. assuming

  1312. that you're

  1313. in God's

  1314. family

  1315. by association

  1316. and being

  1317. in God's

  1318. family

  1319. by adoption

  1320. a distinction

  1321. so significant

  1322. that the only

  1323. one who ever

  1324. earned

  1325. life

  1326. tasted

  1327. death

  1328. himself

  1329. so that he

  1330. could give

  1331. us

  1332. life

  1333. those of us

  1334. facing

  1335. death

  1336. fearing

  1337. death

  1338. could actually

  1339. live

  1340. forever

  1341. he has

  1342. already

  1343. been

  1344. killed

  1345. lifted

  1346. up

  1347. to die

  1348. he's

  1349. already

  1350. been

  1351. crowned

  1352. risen

  1353. to the

  1354. highest

  1355. place
