  1. You are listening to a message from Southwood Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama.

  2. Our passion is to experience and express grace.

  3. Join us.

  4. Amen.

  5. Thank you, Nina and Newt.

  6. Those have got to be up there in my top ten most beautiful hymn lyrics.

  7. My sinful self, my only shame, my glory, all the cross.

  8. Two wonders I confess, the wonders of redeeming love and my unworthiness.

  9. I hope those words ring in your ears.

  10. I do hope that you'll celebrate the glory of the cross, the empty tomb,

  11. how Jesus covers our sinful shame and he gives us life.

  12. Especially celebrate that with us this week with our special services.

  13. But we celebrate that Savior all the time, don't we?

  14. We don't wait for Easter to celebrate the cross or the empty tomb.

  15. I need to see him afresh today.

  16. Anybody else need to see Jesus?

  17. Just need right where you are, in the hard places, in the uncertainties, in the struggles.

  18. And Jesus is going to meet us again.

  19. So we're going to open his word to John's gospel where we are encountering Jesus.

  20. And recently, what we've seen Jesus doing is healing a blind man

  21. and then seeking him out again to give him spiritual sight.

  22. While the Pharisees, the religious experts, are exposed as blind guides.

  23. Chapter 10 of John actually continues Jesus' conversation with some of these Pharisees

  24. and others are listening in.

  25. Let's read the first 10 verses of John chapter 10.

    John 10 chapter mention

  26. Truly, truly, I say to you, he who does not enter the sheepfold by the door,

  27. but climbs in by another way, that man is a thief and a robber.

  28. But he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep.

  29. To him the gatekeeper opens.

  30. The sheep hear his voice and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.

  31. When he has brought out all his own, he goes before them and the sheep follow him,

  32. for they know his voice.

  33. A stranger they will not follow, but they will flee from him,

  34. for they do not know the voice of strangers.

  35. This figure of speech Jesus used with them,

  36. but they did not understand what he was saying to them.

  37. So Jesus again said to them,

  38. Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep.

  39. All who came before me are thieves and robbers,

  40. but the sheep did not listen to them.

  41. I am the door.

  42. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved

  43. and will go in and out and find pasture.

  44. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy.

  45. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.

  46. Thus far, God's holy, inerrant, infallible word.

  47. Let's ask for his help.

  48. Father, we do ask for you to speak to us this morning by your spirit.

  49. Jesus, might we hear your voice

  50. and know you and follow you

  51. and worship you, delight in you.

  52. Do that work in our hearts, we ask in your name.

  53. Amen.

  54. Amen.

  55. Jesus gives us here a wonderful picture of our relationship with God.

  56. Sheep in a sheepfold and a shepherd.

  57. And then he uses multiple metaphors through the rest of the chapter

  58. to teach us about our relationship.

  59. Probably the most familiar of those being that Jesus is the good shepherd.

  60. What a deeply personal image for our relationship with him.

  61. Hearing his voice, recognizing who he is,

  62. following where he leads, trusting his provision.

  63. There's so many good things in there,

  64. but we're going to save most of them for next week.

  65. It's going to be Easter.

  66. It's going to be great.

  67. But first, as he explains the picture that he has given here,

  68. we get the third of his I am statements in John.

  69. Jesus says, I am the door.

  70. Or the gate, sometimes you've heard it translated.

  71. The picture Jesus is using here would have been much more familiar

  72. to his original audience than it probably is to you.

  73. So I want to give you a little bit of a picture of what they might have had in mind.

  74. These sheepfolds would have been all over the place near where Jesus is talking to them.

  75. Probably six foot tall stone walls with a single door where the shepherd would stand

  76. to keep the sheep in.

  77. Or perhaps even at night lie down in front of the door to sleep

  78. so that no sheep escape overnight.

  79. Often sheep were owned by multiple families in the same village

  80. and they would get together and share a sheepfold

  81. so that one shepherd could watch over all of them.

  82. So Jesus is giving us a picture like this of a sheepfold of God's family, right?

  83. That's what he's talking about.

  84. He will speak of himself as the shepherd.

  85. But in these verses, his point is first that he is the door,

  86. the way into relationship with God and with his people.

  87. It is really important to Jesus here to answer the question,

  88. how do I get in with God?

  89. Maybe you've wondered that.

  90. How do I get in with God?

  91. Notice from the first verse, Jesus is talking about the possibility of other ways in.

  92. Climbing in.

  93. Pretty dangerous perhaps.

  94. That would be done only by thieves and robbers.

  95. People out to harm the sheep.

  96. So the contrast here in this passage is most pointedly the unfaithful shepherds

  97. like the Pharisees Jesus is just speaking to

  98. who don't enter through Jesus at all, do they?

  99. They're chasing him off.

  100. They don't point others to Jesus either.

  101. The contrast with them and the faithful shepherds,

  102. which eventually includes Jesus himself.

  103. But initially here it means those who enter through Jesus

  104. and who point people to the true door, to him.

  105. See, if Jesus is the true door,

  106. he wants us to know the dangers of trying to climb in another way.

  107. The thieves and robbers come to steal and kill and destroy.

  108. Verse 10.

  109. That's serious language.

  110. That's a serious danger.

  111. When they get in among God's people,

  112. it causes harm to the sheep

  113. because they continue to miss Jesus.

  114. Often, even when they do interact with people,

  115. their ministry is focused on themselves.

  116. It's all about them.

  117. Maybe such false shepherds say you get in with God

  118. by being born into the family.

  119. Remember they've said that recently?

  120. Children of Abraham,

  121. we have the right associations, Jesus.

  122. We're in.

  123. Or perhaps it's religious ritual.

  124. You know, go through the right ceremonies.

  125. Make sure you're baptized.

  126. Check the right outward boxes

  127. so you look the part of clean sheep.

  128. That's how you get in with God.

  129. He's looking for somebody.

  130. He looks like he might want them in his family,

  131. they might say.

  132. I bet many of us have heard

  133. that you can climb into relationship with God

  134. through your morality,

  135. your performance.

  136. That's what makes you a Christian, right?

  137. You've heard that.

  138. It's how you talk.

  139. It's how you vote.

  140. It's how you teach your kids,

  141. how you spend your money,

  142. how you keep the rules,

  143. how you love your neighbor.

  144. A lot of that sounds good, doesn't it?

  145. But Jesus says,

  146. if it is pointing you anywhere but him,

  147. watch out!

  148. Danger!

  149. Not just not as good, dangerous!

  150. See, if Jesus is the door,

  151. then it's not Muhammad or Buddha.

  152. But equally,

  153. you probably knew he meant that.

  154. Equally, he's saying,

  155. it's not you or me

  156. or anything we do.

  157. And that includes walking an aisle

  158. or praying a prayer

  159. or being a pretty good person,

  160. being nice to other people.

  161. It's really important for us to hear this

  162. because so many people have lists for us

  163. of how we get in with God,

  164. don't they?

  165. And if those lists don't point us to Jesus alone,

  166. we might find ourselves trying to climb in

  167. the wrong way.

  168. And further,

  169. Jesus is especially warning us here

  170. that if we listen to people

  171. who urge us to rely on anyone

  172. or anything other than him,

  173. we will find that we lose our lives,

  174. not that we save them.

  175. What voices do you listen to?

  176. Sometimes you can even come to church

  177. and leave thinking that

  178. you need to carry a lot of things with you

  179. to come to God.

  180. Boy, I just walked to church

  181. and I leave thinking

  182. there's more things I've got to do or not do.

  183. It's all the things I'm supposed to avoid.

  184. It's all the ways I need to be better than others.

  185. It's all the people that I need to love.

  186. And you load up your arms

  187. with all of these things

  188. and then try to walk in through the door.

  189. And what you should have in mind,

  190. the picture I want you to have

  191. is of that special piece of furniture

  192. that was,

  193. it seems like the house was built around it

  194. and you're trying to pick it up

  195. and no matter what angle you carry it at,

  196. it is not going through that doorway.

  197. It's staying in that house.

  198. You can leave,

  199. but the furniture's not coming.

  200. You can't carry that furniture

  201. and walk through the door.

  202. You're gonna have to put it down.

  203. Coming into the sheepfold of God

  204. requires us

  205. to lay down our pride,

  206. whatever it might be in,

  207. nothing in my hand I bring,

  208. simply to thy cross I cling.

  209. My sinful self,

  210. my only shame,

  211. my glory,

  212. all the cross.

  213. If you try to get in another way,

  214. you will wreck yourself

  215. trying to climb in.

  216. You will.

  217. But if you humble yourself

  218. to crawl,

  219. to crawl through the door,

  220. through Jesus,

  221. you can crawl safely in.

  222. Verse nine,

  223. I am the door.

  224. If anyone enters by me,

  225. he will be saved.

  226. Listen, did you hear it?

  227. Anyone.

  228. If anyone enters by me,

  229. it is the beautiful inclusivity

  230. of Jesus.

  231. His broad welcome

  232. that matches up

  233. with the clear exclusivity.

  234. Yes, for sure.

  235. He is the door.

  236. He is the only way.

  237. But anyone can come through him.

  238. No matter your record.

  239. No matter your pedigree,

  240. your appearance,

  241. your associations.

  242. None of it matters.

  243. It matters which door

  244. you're coming through.

  245. Through him.

  246. He is the only way into God.

  247. And if you come through him,

  248. you will be saved.

  249. That is the safety

  250. of coming through Jesus.

  251. Friend, listen.

  252. He has done

  253. all that you need.

  254. All of that performing

  255. you feel like you need to do.

  256. All the things you think

  257. you need to gather up

  258. to come to God.

  259. Think of Jesus'

  260. beautiful,

  261. obedient,

  262. passionate,

  263. zealous,

  264. perfect life.

  265. He's done it for you.

  266. All of those,

  267. all of those failures,

  268. the debt you've accrued

  269. because you didn't,

  270. you didn't avoid

  271. all the things

  272. you were supposed to.

  273. Jesus has done it

  274. and then has paid

  275. for your debt

  276. on the cross

  277. once and for all

  278. as he suffered

  279. the agonizing death

  280. you deserved.

  281. And then,

  282. it didn't stop there,

  283. did it?

  284. Because Easter's coming

  285. and Jesus rises

  286. from the dead

  287. to give you new life,

  288. the life that you long for.

  289. Jesus has secured

  290. for you forever.

  291. And he says,

  292. no one can snatch you

  293. out of my hand.

  294. Did you know

  295. that's why he came?

  296. That's why he lived

  297. so that today he could say,

  298. no one can snatch you

  299. out of my hand.

  300. He's holding you tight.

  301. Not because of what you've done,

  302. not because you've got

  303. enough stuff in your arms,

  304. but because he has done

  305. that for you,

  306. amen?

  307. And he loves you

  308. and he holds you

  309. and he brings you in

  310. to God's family.

  311. That's our hope.

  312. Whatever you think

  313. might get you in with God.

  314. Whoever is directing you

  315. another way

  316. to make sure you're in,

  317. put it down.

  318. Come weak

  319. and wounded,

  320. anxious,

  321. tired,

  322. crawl

  323. to Jesus

  324. and live.

  325. That's,

  326. that's what happens.

  327. Take your stand

  328. beneath the cross

  329. of Jesus

  330. right now.

  331. You don't need anyone

  332. to do it for you.

  333. You don't have to wait

  334. until you can balance out

  335. your record a little bit.

  336. No,

  337. you can come straight

  338. to Jesus

  339. right now.

  340. Just,

  341. just ask him.

  342. You can pray

  343. just like this.

  344. Jesus,

  345. you say you're the door.

  346. I am laying

  347. everything else down

  348. to come through you.

  349. Save me.

  350. Bring me into

  351. the family of God.

  352. I don't deserve it.

  353. I have nothing to offer,

  354. but you tell me

  355. I just need you.

  356. that's the good news

  357. of Jesus.

  358. You can come to God

  359. just like that.

  360. It's the glorious message

  361. of grace.

  362. Amazing grace.

  363. Something you could

  364. never earn.

  365. And many of you

  366. have heard it before.

  367. Many of you

  368. have come in

  369. with God

  370. through Jesus

  371. and that delights you

  372. and you,

  373. you light up

  374. when I talk about it

  375. and you can't

  376. forget how beautiful

  377. it is

  378. to come to Jesus

  379. with nothing to offer.

  380. And now I want to tell you

  381. Jesus has yet

  382. one more glorious message

  383. for you

  384. today.

  385. Jesus is telling us

  386. that his being the door

  387. means that grace,

  388. that,

  389. that kind of amazing grace

  390. is not a one-time thing.

  391. It's,

  392. it's not.

  393. Imagine,

  394. just imagine

  395. if the shepherd

  396. got all of the sheep

  397. in through the door

  398. and then disappeared.

  399. What would happen?

  400. What would happen

  401. if he was gone

  402. from that doorway

  403. and the sheep?

  404. How long do you have,

  405. think he'd have to be gone

  406. for those sheep

  407. to wander off?

  408. What do you think

  409. would happen to them

  410. wandering off

  411. on their own?

  412. I bet some would

  413. wander sooner than others.

  414. But all of them eventually.

  415. Thankfully,

  416. that's not the picture

  417. that Jesus gives us.

  418. Jesus says,

  419. I am

  420. the door

  421. of the sheep.

  422. Keep hearing

  423. my voice.

  424. Keep entering

  425. through me.

  426. And anyone who does

  427. will not only be saved,

  428. but what else?

  429. Also will go in

  430. and will go out

  431. and will find pasture.

  432. The secret

  433. of God's grace

  434. is that it

  435. keeps drawing you

  436. toward Jesus

  437. in love,

  438. doesn't it?

  439. So many of you know that.

  440. It keeps drawing you

  441. toward Jesus

  442. in love

  443. rather than sending you

  444. out from Jesus

  445. in licentious living.

  446. Rather than leaving you

  447. on your own,

  448. you are not

  449. on your own,

  450. brothers and sisters.

  451. brothers,

  452. what Jesus

  453. wants you to know

  454. is that he may be

  455. the door

  456. that you walked

  457. through five years ago

  458. or 75 years ago,

  459. but he is the door

  460. for you today.

  461. Today he wants you

  462. to know that

  463. the same door

  464. into relationship

  465. with God

  466. is Jesus.

  467. How do I live

  468. with God?

  469. Okay,

  470. so that's how to get in.

  471. How do I live

  472. with God?

  473. Y'all,

  474. so many Christians

  475. today are like

  476. the Christians

  477. in Galatia

  478. that Paul writes to.

  479. They heard

  480. the good news

  481. of grace

  482. that you get in

  483. with God

  484. through Jesus

  485. alone

  486. and then they figured

  487. they better start

  488. looking the part

  489. or they would get

  490. left behind.

  491. Teachers were

  492. telling them

  493. that.

  494. You ever felt

  495. like that?

  496. Get it together

  497. where God's

  498. going to leave

  499. you behind.

  500. You ever feel

  501. like God's

  502. probably ready

  503. to drop you?

  504. It's been one

  505. too many times.

  506. If I skip

  507. another Sunday,

  508. if I lose

  509. my temper again,

  510. if I don't love

  511. my neighbor better,

  512. something bad

  513. might happen.

  514. that's what the

  515. Pharisees made

  516. many feel like,

  517. including the

  518. blind man

  519. whom Jesus

  520. had just healed

  521. that they ran

  522. off and Jesus

  523. had to run

  524. after again

  525. to bring him

  526. back, right?

  527. Thieves,

  528. robbers,

  529. strangers

  530. pointing the

  531. sheep away

  532. from Jesus,

  533. leaving them

  534. alone in their

  535. own strength

  536. to fend for

  537. themselves.

  538. What a disaster!

  539. Never so

  540. with Jesus.

  541. That's not what

  542. he's like.

  543. That's not the

  544. kind of shepherd

  545. he is.

  546. Friends,

  547. Jesus is not

  548. merely the

  549. way in once,

  550. the way to

  551. get in with

  552. God and then

  553. poof,

  554. he's gone.

  555. He is the

  556. way to live

  557. with God.

  558. Let's try to

  559. see this

  560. practically through

  561. the three verbs

  562. in verse 9.

  563. I am the

  564. door.

  565. If anyone

  566. enters by me,

  567. he will be

  568. saved and

  569. will go in,

  570. will go out,

  571. and will

  572. find pasture.

  573. First,

  574. going in

  575. through Jesus,

  576. going into the

  577. sheepfold,

  578. the company of

  579. God's people,

  580. relationship with

  581. God over and

  582. over,

  583. deeper and

  584. deeper,

  585. not looking for

  586. another way to

  587. life,

  588. not looking for

  589. a better way

  590. back in tonight

  591. at the end of

  592. the day.

  593. British preacher

  594. Charles Spurgeon

  595. said it beautifully

  596. of this phrase,

  597. so I'm going to

  598. quote his sermon

  599. for a longer

  600. stretch than I

  601. usually do because

  602. it's too pretty

  603. to cut out.

  604. If you know

  605. what this means,

  606. he says,

  607. go in.

  608. Go in farther.

  609. Go in more

  610. constantly.

  611. Do not stop

  612. where you are,

  613. but go in until

  614. you have a little

  615. more.

  616. If you love

  617. Christ,

  618. come nearer to

  619. him and nearer

  620. and nearer still.

  621. But if you want

  622. to get into

  623. anything that is

  624. divine,

  625. you must get

  626. it through

  627. Christ.

  628. Oh, you who

  629. open your Bibles

  630. and want to

  631. understand a text,

  632. the way to get

  633. into the meaning

  634. of the text is

  635. through the door,

  636. Christ.

  637. Oh, you who

  638. want to get

  639. more holiness,

  640. come through

  641. the door.

  642. The way to

  643. holiness is not

  644. through Moses,

  645. but through

  646. Christ.

  647. Oh, you who

  648. would have

  649. closer communion

  650. with your

  651. heavenly Father,

  652. the way to

  653. come in is not

  654. through your own

  655. efforts, but

  656. through Christ.

  657. You came to

  658. Christ at first

  659. to get salvation,

  660. you must come

  661. to Christ still

  662. to get

  663. sanctification,

  664. to grow,

  665. to know him

  666. more.

  667. Never look

  668. for another

  669. door,

  670. for there is

  671. but one.

  672. And that

  673. one door

  674. will let

  675. you into

  676. life,

  677. love,

  678. peace,

  679. knowledge,

  680. sanctification.

  681. Christ is

  682. the master

  683. key of all

  684. the rooms

  685. in the

  686. palace of

  687. mercy.

  688. And if

  689. you get

  690. Christ,

  691. you shall

  692. go in.

  693. Nothing

  694. shall keep

  695. you out

  696. of the

  697. secret

  698. chambers.

  699. You shall

  700. go in

  701. in God's

  702. name

  703. through

  704. Christ

  705. the door.

  706. Isn't

  707. that

  708. beautiful?

  709. every

  710. spiritual

  711. blessing

  712. where?

  713. In

  714. Christ,

  715. right?

  716. Ephesians

  717. 1.

  718. All the

  719. treasures

  720. of wisdom

  721. and knowledge

  722. where?

  723. In

  724. Christ,

  725. Colossians

  726. 2.

  727. Are you

  728. daily

  729. coming

  730. to God

  731. through

  732. Jesus?

  733. Are you?

  734. Time with

  735. him must

  736. be a

  737. priority

  738. for us.

  739. True

  740. life is

  741. found

  742. nowhere

  743. else.

  744. Peace,

  745. hope,

  746. purpose,

  747. wisdom,

  748. growth,

  749. love.

  750. Friends,

  751. in case

  752. you're not

  753. familiar,

  754. that's why

  755. many Christians

  756. read the

  757. Bible every

  758. day.

  759. It's not

  760. to compete

  761. for points

  762. with God.

  763. He doesn't

  764. have a

  765. top 25.

  766. But because

  767. we know

  768. that it

  769. will point

  770. us to

  771. Jesus and

  772. that we

  773. can't make

  774. it without

  775. him.

  776. Not one

  777. day.

  778. We know

  779. he will

  780. fill us

  781. again,

  782. bless us

  783. again,

  784. guide us

  785. again.

  786. So every

  787. day read

  788. and then

  789. reflect.

  790. How should

  791. I treasure

  792. Jesus?

  793. How does

  794. this show

  795. me his

  796. beauty,

  797. my need

  798. for him?

  799. If you

  800. need help

  801. with when

  802. and how

  803. and how

  804. to see

  805. Jesus,

  806. please ask.

  807. Love to

  808. help.

  809. Next,

  810. going out.

  811. we'll

  812. go in,

  813. we'll

  814. go out.

  815. Best

  816. understood

  817. in this

  818. picture as

  819. leaving the

  820. church,

  821. going out

  822. into the

  823. world each

  824. day through

  825. Jesus.

  826. Isn't that

  827. wonderful?

  828. I don't know

  829. if you think

  830. about every

  831. day going

  832. out into the

  833. world that

  834. way,

  835. but in

  836. this picture

  837. there is no

  838. separate part

  839. of your

  840. life.

  841. the sheep

  842. cannot leave

  843. the fold

  844. without going

  845. through the

  846. same doorway

  847. they came

  848. in,

  849. right?

  850. They're not

  851. getting over

  852. the wall.

  853. They will

  854. go out

  855. through

  856. Jesus,

  857. and this

  858. is really

  859. important

  860. because I

  861. just told

  862. you why

  863. so many

  864. Christians

  865. spend time

  866. talking with

  867. Jesus every

  868. day,

  869. and you

  870. need to

  871. know Jesus

  872. is with

  873. you not

  874. only in

  875. your quiet

  876. time.

  877. Did you

  878. know that?

  879. Jesus cares

  880. about you

  881. more than

  882. your regular

  883. devotional

  884. life.

  885. He is a

  886. personal

  887. shepherd

  888. helping you

  889. to live

  890. with God

  891. everywhere,

  892. everywhere,

  893. in every

  894. situation.

  895. What that

  896. means is

  897. that the

  898. only safe

  899. way to

  900. make it

  901. through a

  902. day in

  903. this world

  904. is with

  905. Jesus.

  906. The only

  907. safe way

  908. to make

  909. it through

  910. a day in

  911. this world

  912. is with

  913. Jesus.

  914. Do you

  915. live like

  916. that?

  917. I didn't

  918. say,

  919. did you

  920. nod your

  921. head when

  922. I said

  923. it?

  924. Do you

  925. live like

  926. that?

  927. How do

  928. you practice

  929. the presence

  930. of God

  931. that he

  932. is with

  933. you at

  934. work?

  935. When you

  936. want to

  937. share of

  938. him with

  939. your neighbor,

  940. when you

  941. go to

  942. school,

  943. Jesus,

  944. give me

  945. strength,

  946. I'm about

  947. to slap

  948. my co-worker.

  949. Jesus,

  950. help,

  951. I need

  952. words to

  953. speak about

  954. you.

  955. Those are

  956. equally

  957. legitimate

  958. prayers.

  959. Jesus,

  960. I feel

  961. it.

  962. I'm

  963. treasuring

  964. the things

  965. of this

  966. world.

  967. It's

  968. happening

  969. again.

  970. I see

  971. it in

  972. what I'm

  973. doing

  974. right now.

  975. Show me

  976. again,

  977. Jesus,

  978. you are

  979. the true

  980. treasure.

  981. Right

  982. now,

  983. right here,

  984. not tomorrow

  985. morning when I

  986. have another

  987. quiet time.

  988. Show me

  989. now,

  990. Jesus,

  991. I need

  992. your help.

  993. He's

  994. with you,

  995. giving you

  996. all that you

  997. need to

  998. live in

  999. his world

  1000. on his

  1001. mission.

  1002. He gives

  1003. you forgiveness

  1004. that enables

  1005. you to

  1006. repent,

  1007. even to

  1008. that

  1009. co-worker.

  1010. He gives

  1011. you eternal

  1012. security that

  1013. frees you to

  1014. risk temporal

  1015. discomfort in

  1016. relationships to

  1017. share his

  1018. love.

  1019. He gives

  1020. you peace

  1021. that allows

  1022. you to

  1023. enter chaos

  1024. and hurt

  1025. and busyness

  1026. around you

  1027. as a calm

  1028. presence.

  1029. Do you

  1030. live like

  1031. that?

  1032. Are you

  1033. going out

  1034. on your

  1035. own,

  1036. in your

  1037. own strength,

  1038. for your

  1039. own goals,

  1040. thinking you'll

  1041. be just

  1042. fine?

  1043. Friends,

  1044. you won't.

  1045. You're a

  1046. sheep.

  1047. He's the

  1048. door.

  1049. Don't leave

  1050. home without

  1051. him,

  1052. ever.

  1053. Talk with

  1054. your grace

  1055. group about

  1056. how you

  1057. can go out

  1058. every day

  1059. wherever you

  1060. go with

  1061. Jesus.

  1062. Where you

  1063. go,

  1064. you need to

  1065. talk about

  1066. your life.

  1067. you'll go

  1068. in and

  1069. you'll go

  1070. out and

  1071. every single

  1072. time you'll

  1073. find pasture

  1074. through Jesus.

  1075. Find pasture

  1076. sounds like

  1077. Psalm 23,

  1078. doesn't it?

  1079. The Lord is

  1080. my shepherd,

  1081. I shall

  1082. not

  1083. want.

  1084. Perfectly

  1085. provided for

  1086. at all times.

  1087. The cherished

  1088. object of

  1089. divine

  1090. diligence,

  1091. green

  1092. pastures

  1093. to lie

  1094. down in,

  1095. his provision

  1096. rest,

  1097. still

  1098. waters,

  1099. a restored

  1100. soul,

  1101. peace,

  1102. hope.

  1103. You'll

  1104. have life

  1105. and in

  1106. fact have

  1107. it abundantly,

  1108. he says.

  1109. We're going

  1110. to talk more

  1111. about that

  1112. abundant life

  1113. next week.

  1114. It is so

  1115. good and

  1116. it's Easter

  1117. and so

  1118. don't miss

  1119. that but

  1120. it's not

  1121. all the

  1122. comfort and

  1123. ease that

  1124. we could

  1125. ever hope

  1126. for.

  1127. That's not

  1128. what abundant

  1129. life means.

  1130. No.

  1131. Jesus is

  1132. saying that

  1133. living through

  1134. him we

  1135. have true

  1136. life no

  1137. matter what

  1138. discomfort or

  1139. dis-ease

  1140. we face.

  1141. Pasture is a

  1142. place of

  1143. rest,

  1144. not rush.

  1145. church.

  1146. I've sat

  1147. with several

  1148. of you

  1149. in a lot

  1150. of pain

  1151. this week.

  1152. Deep

  1153. loss

  1154. and grief,

  1155. painful

  1156. injustice,

  1157. hurt

  1158. from other

  1159. people's

  1160. sin.

  1161. and in

  1162. every one

  1163. of those

  1164. painful

  1165. situations

  1166. if you

  1167. are trying

  1168. to live

  1169. with God

  1170. on your

  1171. own,

  1172. come to

  1173. him on

  1174. your own,

  1175. you'll be

  1176. in those

  1177. situations

  1178. merely angry

  1179. with him

  1180. and hopeless

  1181. and bitter

  1182. because you

  1183. can't fix

  1184. him.

  1185. Nothing

  1186. seems good.

  1187. That's the

  1188. reality of

  1189. where many

  1190. of us

  1191. will go

  1192. this week.

  1193. But if

  1194. Jesus is

  1195. the door

  1196. in your

  1197. relationship

  1198. with God,

  1199. if he is

  1200. there with

  1201. you in

  1202. those moments,

  1203. the one who

  1204. stays with

  1205. you, the

  1206. one who

  1207. makes sure

  1208. that no

  1209. matter what

  1210. happens,

  1211. you're going

  1212. to find

  1213. pasture,

  1214. then you

  1215. can grieve

  1216. the loss

  1217. of someone

  1218. young or

  1219. old.

  1220. You can

  1221. even yell

  1222. it God

  1223. and have

  1224. hope in

  1225. the God

  1226. who gave

  1227. up his

  1228. only son

  1229. for you.

  1230. If Jesus

  1231. is actively

  1232. with you,

  1233. you can be

  1234. confident that

  1235. the wrong

  1236. you've

  1237. experienced

  1238. will one

  1239. day be

  1240. made right

  1241. and that

  1242. it's not

  1243. without purpose

  1244. right now

  1245. because he's

  1246. here at work

  1247. with you.

  1248. If you are

  1249. finding pasture

  1250. through Jesus,

  1251. you can call

  1252. sin,

  1253. sin.

  1254. You can

  1255. forgive without

  1256. limit and

  1257. you can

  1258. love others

  1259. because someone

  1260. loves and

  1261. is caring

  1262. for you.

  1263. Is your

  1264. life too

  1265. full for

  1266. that?

  1267. You're always

  1268. searching,

  1269. you're frantically

  1270. busy,

  1271. slow down.

  1272. You can

  1273. because he's

  1274. got it

  1275. and he's

  1276. got you.

  1277. Pasture

  1278. is a place

  1279. of rest,

  1280. not rush

  1281. because

  1282. Jesus is

  1283. there.

  1284. Do you

  1285. see why we

  1286. can't go a

  1287. day without

  1288. Jesus?

  1289. Without

  1290. contemplating

  1291. his glory

  1292. and his

  1293. grace,

  1294. without

  1295. depending on

  1296. him for

  1297. life,

  1298. for life

  1299. eternal,

  1300. for life

  1301. abundant,

  1302. for life

  1303. today we

  1304. need him.

  1305. The story

  1306. is told of a

  1307. wealthy old

  1308. widower and

  1309. his only son

  1310. who got

  1311. together and

  1312. began to

  1313. collect an

  1314. amazing art

  1315. portfolio.

  1316. Rembrandts,

  1317. Van Gogh's,

  1318. Monet's,

  1319. they had a

  1320. collection anyone

  1321. would envy but

  1322. the joy of the

  1323. father really was

  1324. that he shared

  1325. this activity with

  1326. the son that he

  1327. loved.

  1328. One day,

  1329. however,

  1330. the son went

  1331. off to war

  1332. and never

  1333. returned home.

  1334. Months after

  1335. the father

  1336. learned of his

  1337. son's death,

  1338. a soldier

  1339. knocked

  1340. on his

  1341. door and

  1342. gave him a

  1343. package,

  1344. was a

  1345. portrait of

  1346. the father's

  1347. son painted

  1348. just a few

  1349. days before

  1350. he died.

  1351. It wasn't

  1352. beautifully

  1353. painted,

  1354. but the

  1355. father hung

  1356. it over his

  1357. fireplace as

  1358. the centerpiece

  1359. of his

  1360. collection.

  1361. When the

  1362. man died,

  1363. art collectors

  1364. from around

  1365. the world

  1366. came to an

  1367. auction for

  1368. this fantastic,

  1369. famous collection.

  1370. Here they are

  1371. gathered and as

  1372. the room fills,

  1373. the auctioneer

  1374. says,

  1375. we're going to

  1376. begin with the

  1377. portrait of the

  1378. son.

  1379. Will anyone

  1380. give $100 for

  1381. the portrait of

  1382. the son?

  1383. And he hears

  1384. nothing.

  1385. He said,

  1386. how about $50?

  1387. Anyone?

  1388. Come on,

  1389. $50 for the

  1390. portrait of the

  1391. son.

  1392. And finally,

  1393. one of their

  1394. neighbors says,

  1395. you know,

  1396. I knew them.

  1397. He really loved

  1398. his son.

  1399. I'll give you

  1400. $50 for it.

  1401. Now,

  1402. now we can get

  1403. started.

  1404. Everyone's getting

  1405. keyed up for the

  1406. masterpieces.

  1407. Here they come,

  1408. but the auctioneer

  1409. says,

  1410. the auction is

  1411. over.

  1412. What?

  1413. Why?

  1414. How can that

  1415. be?

  1416. This is what we

  1417. came for.

  1418. It's very simple,

  1419. he says.

  1420. According to the

  1421. father's will,

  1422. whoever takes

  1423. the son gets

  1424. it all.

  1425. Whoever takes

  1426. the son,

  1427. gets it all.

  1428. When you enter

  1429. into relationship

  1430. with God the

  1431. father,

  1432. through Jesus

  1433. his son,

  1434. you don't

  1435. merely get

  1436. life one day,

  1437. someday,

  1438. although that's

  1439. wonderful.

  1440. You get

  1441. life every

  1442. day with

  1443. all the

  1444. glorious

  1445. riches of

  1446. the goodness

  1447. and grace

  1448. of God

  1449. himself.

  1450. It's

  1451. yours

  1452. now,

  1453. today.

  1454. and

  1455. every

  1456. day.

  1457. And that's

  1458. not a secret.

  1459. It's not

  1460. meant to be a

  1461. surprise.

  1462. Jesus,

  1463. the son,

  1464. tells us

  1465. that he

  1466. is the

  1467. good shepherd

  1468. who lays

  1469. down his

  1470. life for

  1471. the sheep.

  1472. The father

  1473. tells us

  1474. if God

  1475. did not

  1476. spare his

  1477. own son,

  1478. but gave

  1479. him up for

  1480. us all,

  1481. how will

  1482. he not

  1483. also along

  1484. with him

  1485. graciously

  1486. give us

  1487. all things,

  1488. all things

  1489. in Jesus?

  1490. Jesus.

  1491. So on

  1492. the night

  1493. he was

  1494. betrayed,

  1495. Jesus

  1496. took bread

  1497. and he

  1498. broke it

  1499. as I

  1500. gave it

  1501. to his

  1502. disciples.

  1503. Just in

  1504. the same

  1505. way that I,

  1506. ministering in

  1507. his name,

  1508. give this

  1509. bread to

  1510. you,

  1511. he said,

  1512. take and

  1513. eat.

  1514. This is

  1515. my body

  1516. broken for

  1517. you.

  1518. Do this

  1519. in remembrance

  1520. of me.

  1521. And in the

  1522. same way,

  1523. after supper,

  1524. he took the

  1525. cup and

  1526. said,

  1527. this cup

  1528. is the

  1529. new

  1530. covenant

  1531. in my

  1532. blood.

  1533. Shed for

  1534. many for

  1535. the forgiveness

  1536. of sins,

  1537. drink from

  1538. it,

  1539. all of you.

  1540. For as

  1541. often as

  1542. you eat

  1543. this bread

  1544. and drink

  1545. this cup,

  1546. you proclaim

  1547. the Lord's

  1548. death

  1549. until he

  1550. comes.

  1551. This is

  1552. the Lord's

  1553. table.

  1554. It's

  1555. another

  1556. picture

  1557. of our

  1558. relationship

  1559. with him,

  1560. just like

  1561. the sheep

  1562. fold is.

  1563. You don't

  1564. get the

  1565. invite to

  1566. this table

  1567. by being

  1568. Presbyterian,

  1569. by being

  1570. moral,

  1571. by being

  1572. pretty good.

  1573. You come

  1574. to the

  1575. table and

  1576. the God

  1577. who sets

  1578. it through

  1579. the door,

  1580. through his

  1581. son,

  1582. and if that

  1583. is your

  1584. hope,

  1585. then you

  1586. come and

  1587. you eat

  1588. with these

  1589. other sheep

  1590. who would

  1591. be hopelessly

  1592. lost without

  1593. him.

  1594. That's all

  1595. of our

  1596. story.

  1597. And who

  1598. have come

  1599. in only

  1600. through

  1601. Jesus.

  1602. If that's

  1603. not your

  1604. hope,

  1605. if you

  1606. don't place

  1607. your trust

  1608. in Jesus

  1609. alone for

  1610. coming into

  1611. relationship

  1612. with God,

  1613. then I

  1614. invite you

  1615. not to

  1616. come and

  1617. partake of

  1618. this table.

  1619. Don't take

  1620. the elements

  1621. this morning.

  1622. It pictures

  1623. that relationship

  1624. with God

  1625. is through

  1626. Jesus alone.

  1627. And if that's

  1628. not something

  1629. that you

  1630. believe personally,

  1631. I would warn

  1632. you not to

  1633. come and

  1634. say something

  1635. that you

  1636. don't really

  1637. believe.

  1638. Plus,

  1639. God warns

  1640. against it

  1641. also.

  1642. God also

  1643. warns not

  1644. having

  1645. relationship

  1646. with him

  1647. any other

  1648. way than

  1649. Jesus.

  1650. So,

  1651. he has

  1652. given you

  1653. Jesus.

  1654. He has

  1655. sent his

  1656. son for

  1657. you that

  1658. you might

  1659. know life,

  1660. life eternal

  1661. and life

  1662. abundant.

  1663. He has

  1664. given you

  1665. the only

  1666. door that

  1667. works,

  1668. the only

  1669. door you

  1670. need.

  1671. You need

  1672. to do

  1673. nothing else.

  1674. Won't you

  1675. come in

  1676. through

  1677. Jesus?

  1678. Let's

  1679. pray.

  1680. Father,

  1681. thank you

  1682. for giving

  1683. the son.

  1684. We come

  1685. to say we

  1686. don't need

  1687. anything else.

  1688. You've

  1689. given us

  1690. in him

  1691. all that

  1692. we need,

  1693. all we

  1694. could imagine,

  1695. the riches

  1696. of your

  1697. glory,

  1698. through his

  1699. body and

  1700. blood given

  1701. for us.

  1702. Would you

  1703. now strengthen

  1704. us through

  1705. that,

  1706. that we

  1707. might live

  1708. with him

  1709. even today.

  1710. We ask

  1711. in his

  1712. name.

  1713. Amen.
