  1. You are listening to a message from Southwood Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama.

  2. Our passion is to experience and express grace.

  3. Join us.

  4. Before we jump back into John's gospel today, let me give you a heads up that next week

  5. we are beginning a summer break from our study of John, which by the way we are over nine

  6. months into and over halfway through.

  7. I think that's pretty good.

  8. We're going to get back to the events of the final week of Jesus' life leading to the cross.

  9. But as we've been seeing in John the person of Jesus lifted up over and over as the one

  10. in whom we are to find life, I want us to spend a few weeks talking about what it actually

  11. looks like for us to live with Jesus, to depend on His grace, to walk with Him day by day.

  12. So that's what we're going to do this summer.

  13. I'm excited about that series.

  14. But before we break for that next week, let's see this morning Jesus in His glory held up

  15. before us again.

  16. Jesus has just entered Jerusalem where He's hailed as the coming King, but on a humble donkey,

  17. not a mighty war horse.

  18. And then as the Gentiles come to see Him, He begins to recognize the hour of His death has

  19. come.

  20. The hour, John has so often pointed out to us, is not here yet, is now upon Him.

  21. God has made that clear to Jesus' spirit.

  22. And we'll pick up the reading at verse 27, where as He discusses His coming death, Jesus says,

  23. Now is my soul troubled, and what shall I say?

  24. Father, save me from this hour?

  25. But for this purpose I have come to this hour.

  26. Father, glorify Your name.

  27. Then a voice came from heaven, I have glorified it and I will glorify it again.

  28. Then the crowd that stood there and heard it said that it had thundered.

  29. Others said an angel has spoken to Him.

  30. Jesus answered, This voice has come for Your sake, not mine.

  31. Let's pray.

  32. God, might we gathered here this morning hear Your voice.

  33. Would we see Your glory?

  34. Oh, Holy Spirit, we need Your help for that.

  35. So would You speak to us clearly?

  36. By Your Word, we ask it in Jesus' name.

  37. Amen.

  38. You and I are on a quest for glory.

  39. We long to make a difference in the world, don't we?

  40. To have a lasting, memorable impact on those around us.

  41. To be significant to someone.

  42. In the Bible's terms, as we'll see, we are seeking glory.

  43. In fact, every person who has ever lived since the beginning of history

  44. has been doing this all of our lives.

  45. As I track this quest through different seasons of life here for just a minute,

  46. you see where you recognize or remember yourself.

  47. As kids, we desperately want to fit in, don't we?

  48. Not to be left out or ignored, overlooked or picked last.

  49. To be valued by a group of friends or eventually by that special someone who will tell me that I matter.

  50. Or failing that, I'll have to stand out so that they'll call my name and I get a diploma at graduation

  51. or a trophy at the end of the season or a medal at awards day and I'll hear my name and that will tell me that I'm important.

  52. The quest for glory.

  53. It's why young adults often go on a journey to find themselves, right?

  54. It doesn't always happen in that season of life, but I've met with several people in their 20s recently

  55. and heard a very similar theme from several of them.

  56. I've chased money, women, career, and as one of them told me, quote,

  57. I'm trying to decide what really matters.

  58. Or in the words of another, I just want to settle down and focus on what's really important in life.

  59. So can we talk about God?

  60. The quest for glory is why parents of teens hurt so deeply when they feel ignored or unappreciated

  61. by someone that they've spent day after day for years pouring their lives into.

  62. That's why many people around my age hit a midlife crisis, right?

  63. They wonder if they're really investing their lives in something worthwhile

  64. or if their investments are actually going to last or if they should do something entirely different.

  65. The quest for glory causes many in retirement to struggle with what to do with themselves

  66. because their work has made them feel significant like they mattered for so long

  67. and now, well, what am I going to do now?

  68. It's especially challenging as we get older and we fear being alone.

  69. Who will care for me?

  70. We fear being forgotten.

  71. Will I matter to anyone?

  72. Or we even fear forgetting.

  73. What if I can't remember why I'm important?

  74. Or who values me?

  75. See, the lifelong quest for glory is one that God created us for, but it is fraught with failure.

  76. Trying to get my significance from other people or, as many have tried more recently,

  77. to give value to myself.

  78. I'll matter because I believe I matter.

  79. It just doesn't seem to work.

  80. Wherever you are in that quest today, and I'd say we're all somewhere,

  81. look at how Jesus guides us.

  82. It is really hard and yet so hopeful at the same time.

  83. Jesus' soul is troubled.

  84. Just as at Lazarus' tomb, he's stirred up, unsettled, deeply emotional in the face of death.

  85. It's like that moment in Gethsemane when he prays that this cup would pass from him,

  86. and then he prays,

  87. Father, not my will, but yours be done.

  88. It's that kind of moment here.

  89. Look at the beautiful submission as he wrestles with God,

  90. asking him to deliver him from this hour, this death,

  91. this agonizing separation from his Father.

  92. And then Jesus says,

  93. What?

  94. No, this is the hour I came for.

  95. It's why I've obeyed at every turn.

  96. And he concludes,

  97. Father, glorify your name.

  98. Wow.

  99. Wow.

  100. The biblical words for glory bring the idea of weight, heaviness.

  101. Something like a mountain or an ocean has glory because it has matter.

  102. It literally matters, right?

  103. You don't ignore it when you're considering getting from one side of it to the other.

  104. It is glorious.

  105. There's a weight to it.

  106. Nick Saban's opinion about football matters more to you than mine does.

  107. I'm confident of that.

  108. If it's overtime and the game's on the line and you run his play rather than my play,

  109. you're giving him the glory.

  110. If that's what glory means,

  111. to carry weight like that,

  112. Jesus shows us who has it,

  113. doesn't he?

  114. Jesus is troubled,

  115. but in the midst of that overwhelming emotion,

  116. he is deeply committed to God's glory,

  117. no matter what it costs him, right?

  118. Let's run your play, Father.

  119. Let's do it your way.

  120. Nothing and no one matters more to me than you.

  121. God's glory, see, weighs so heavy for Jesus.

  122. God's will is so primary for Jesus.

  123. God's person looms so large for Jesus

  124. that it produces costly obedience.

  125. In Jesus' case, all the way to death on a cross.

  126. Father, glorify your name.

  127. Then all of a sudden,

  128. the people around Jesus are startled by a thunderclap, they think.

  129. A voice that says,

  130. I have glorified it and I will glorify it again.

  131. Oh, there are many, many ways that God has glorified his own name,

  132. aren't there, in creation.

  133. And displaying his power and his majesty for us to marvel at.

  134. But I think especially here,

  135. God is speaking of the signs.

  136. The signs he's been showing the people through Jesus

  137. as he has become flesh to reveal God's character.

  138. And then displaying his glory over creation,

  139. over sickness, over death itself.

  140. That's what he's talking about.

  141. And he will, as Jesus asks,

  142. glorify his name again,

  143. specifically through the cross

  144. and the resurrection of Jesus.

  145. As Jesus seeks God's glory,

  146. rather than valuing his own comfort or peace,

  147. God's glory is ultimate.

  148. He is the weightiest,

  149. the most important.

  150. We glorify God because he glorifies himself,

  151. doesn't he?

  152. Glorify your name.

  153. What matters to you?

  154. What carries more weight?

  155. God's name being shared with your neighbors

  156. or your comfort being maintained.

  157. God's design for your sexuality being followed

  158. or your desires being satisfied.

  159. God's command to love your uncool neighbor being obeyed

  160. or your longing to fit in with the cool kids being achieved.

  161. See, those are glory issues.

  162. Not just day-to-day decisions.

  163. Those are glory issues.

  164. God has true glory.

  165. Will God be significant, big, weighty to us?

  166. Well, maybe you say,

  167. I'm not exactly sure yet, pastor.

  168. How do I even engage with this true glory?

  169. John has a consistent answer to that question.

  170. It's echoed in this passage.

  171. We engage with God's glory by seeing God

  172. and believing who he is.

  173. It's why Jesus is here, right?

  174. To show us the glory of God

  175. since we haven't seen God.

  176. Remember chapter one?

  177. Jesus says this thunderous voice has just spoken.

  178. Why?

  179. For your sake.

  180. So you will see true glory

  181. and that you'll believe.

  182. And so Jesus then talks about both unbelief

  183. and belief connected to glory.

  184. That's the rest of the chapter.

  185. I'm gonna read now first the unbelief part

  186. at verse 37.

  187. Though Jesus had done so many signs before them,

  188. they still did not believe in him.

  189. They meaning many of the Jews

  190. who had seen these signs.

  191. So that the word spoken by the prophet Isaiah

  192. might be fulfilled.

  193. Lord, who has believed what he heard from us

  194. and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?

  195. Therefore they could not believe.

  196. For again, Isaiah said,

  197. he has blinded their eyes

  198. and hardened their heart

  199. lest they see with their eyes

  200. and understand with their heart

  201. and turn and I would heal them.

  202. Isaiah said these things

  203. because he saw his glory

  204. and spoke of him, Jesus.

  205. Isaiah spoke of a Messiah.

  206. That's the first quotation here.

  207. A Messiah who would not be attractive

  208. to people.

  209. No beauty or majesty.

  210. We esteemed him not.

  211. God's arm, God's strength

  212. is gonna be revealed differently

  213. from what most longed for their Messiah to be.

  214. So just as in Isaiah's day

  215. when people didn't believe God's message,

  216. part of what was going on there

  217. was a divine hardening

  218. so that the Jewish rejection of Jesus,

  219. this so-called Messiah,

  220. would take him to the cross.

  221. God's plan, right?

  222. And share then the riches of his grace

  223. with Gentiles.

  224. God's glory would be spread as a result.

  225. But then as always,

  226. there's a human responsibility

  227. for unbelief

  228. held right there

  229. alongside divine sovereignty.

  230. People motivated

  231. by what they consider

  232. to be most weighty.

  233. Verse 42.

  234. Nevertheless,

  235. many even of the authorities

  236. believed in Jesus

  237. but for fear of the Pharisees,

  238. they did not confess it

  239. so that they would not be put out

  240. of the synagogue

  241. for they loved

  242. the glory that comes from man

  243. more than

  244. the glory

  245. that comes from God.

  246. They saw God's glory, right?

  247. Intellectually,

  248. what Jesus claimed

  249. appealed to them.

  250. But they loved glory from man

  251. more than glory from God.

  252. Their position,

  253. their comfort,

  254. their reputation,

  255. their way of life

  256. was bigger in their eyes.

  257. It mattered more

  258. than God did.

  259. So they couldn't live

  260. for his glory

  261. as Jesus did.

  262. It's unbelief here,

  263. not from some atheistic philosophy,

  264. but from a lifestyle

  265. of self-focus.

  266. Don't let God

  267. get in my way

  268. of my life.

  269. Friends,

  270. if you know that feeling,

  271. one of the most

  272. significant things

  273. is that you listen

  274. now to Jesus' appeal

  275. to everyone,

  276. especially those

  277. who are unbelieving,

  278. who are seeking glory

  279. but missing this

  280. true glory.

  281. What does Jesus say?

  282. He says,

  283. believe in me.

  284. I am showing you

  285. the very glory of God.

  286. Verse 35,

  287. the light is among you

  288. for a little while longer.

  289. Walk while you have the light,

  290. lest darkness overtake you.

  291. The one who walks

  292. in the darkness

  293. does not know

  294. where he is going.

  295. While you have the light,

  296. believe in the light

  297. that you may become

  298. sons of light.

  299. Again,

  300. verse 44,

  301. when he's faced

  302. with the unbelief again,

  303. Jesus cried out loud

  304. for emphasis.

  305. A summary here

  306. before he goes away

  307. from the people,

  308. his final appeal to them,

  309. what is it?

  310. Whoever believes in me,

  311. believes not in me

  312. but in him who sent me.

  313. And whoever sees me

  314. sees him who sent me.

  315. I have come into the world

  316. as light

  317. so that whoever believes in me

  318. may not remain in darkness.

  319. If anyone hears my words

  320. and does not keep them,

  321. I do not judge him

  322. for I did not come

  323. to judge the world

  324. but to save the world.

  325. The one who rejects me

  326. and does not receive my words

  327. has a judge.

  328. The word that I have spoken

  329. will judge him

  330. on the last day.

  331. For I have not spoken

  332. on my own authority

  333. but the Father who sent me

  334. has himself given me

  335. a commandment,

  336. what to say

  337. and what to speak

  338. and I know that his commandment

  339. is eternal life.

  340. What I say therefore,

  341. I say as the Father

  342. has told me.

  343. Whoever believes,

  344. whoever believes in me,

  345. believe in the light

  346. while you have it.

  347. You, even you

  348. who have heard before

  349. and not believed,

  350. even now can become

  351. children of God

  352. who experience his greatness,

  353. who rest in his love

  354. and so live your life

  355. as you were created to

  356. for his glory,

  357. that can be you today.

  358. Jesus couldn't be more urgent

  359. in this plea, could he?

  360. It's an invitation to you.

  361. It is in fact a command

  362. to believe.

  363. Listen, friends,

  364. believe in the light

  365. while you have it

  366. to point you

  367. to the true glory.

  368. While you sit today

  369. under the preaching

  370. of God's word

  371. to reveal his glory,

  372. today is the day

  373. of salvation.

  374. Tomorrow is not guaranteed

  375. to any of us,

  376. not a one of us.

  377. The story is told

  378. of Satan calling

  379. some demons together

  380. to pick one of them

  381. to send to earth

  382. with a message

  383. that will ruin

  384. human souls.

  385. What do you got?

  386. One says,

  387. I'll go and tell them

  388. there's no heaven.

  389. Satan said,

  390. nah,

  391. they won't believe you.

  392. There's a bit of heaven

  393. in every human heart.

  394. In the end,

  395. everyone knows

  396. good will triumph.

  397. Another demon said,

  398. oh,

  399. I'll go and tell them

  400. there's no hell.

  401. Satan said,

  402. nah,

  403. they won't believe you.

  404. Every human heart

  405. knows not only

  406. will good triumph,

  407. but also evil

  408. will be defeated.

  409. And then one other demon

  410. said,

  411. oh,

  412. I'll go

  413. and I'll tell them

  414. there's no hurry.

  415. And Satan said,

  416. you go.

  417. Distract them

  418. with the notions

  419. of human capability,

  420. of worldly fulfillment,

  421. of living for self,

  422. of busyness all the time,

  423. of the tyranny

  424. of the urgent,

  425. the weight of the world

  426. all the time

  427. until they neglect

  428. the weightier matters

  429. of God,

  430. the true glory,

  431. the lasting issues

  432. of life eternal,

  433. and they start to treat

  434. those weighty things

  435. lightly

  436. to give them attention

  437. once a week,

  438. to make them sidebars

  439. in their life.

  440. Friends,

  441. the God of the mountains

  442. and the oceans,

  443. the God of your life,

  444. of my life,

  445. the God of all glory

  446. came to us

  447. in the person of Jesus

  448. to speak words

  449. of eternal life,

  450. to tell you

  451. what really matters

  452. so that we would know him

  453. and trust him

  454. and find life in him.

  455. I don't want one of you

  456. to miss out on that

  457. for one more day.

  458. He is where life is found.

  459. He's calling for you

  460. to come believe

  461. in him

  462. and have life.

  463. You say,

  464. well,

  465. Pastor,

  466. I like that,

  467. but I'm just not sure

  468. I've got so many questions.

  469. There's so many things

  470. you haven't answered yet.

  471. I'm willing to consider it,

  472. but there's a lot of evil

  473. in this world.

  474. You're right.

  475. I believe there's a God,

  476. when I look at the oceans

  477. and the mountains,

  478. he must be powerful

  479. and creative,

  480. but I can't imagine

  481. I could have a relationship

  482. with him.

  483. I see that.

  484. Pastor,

  485. I'm interested,

  486. but I don't want my life

  487. to change so much

  488. when I start saying

  489. that he matters the most.

  490. That's scary.

  491. Yeah.

  492. So what one place,

  493. if I'm trying to decide,

  494. where can I look?

  495. If I'm really wrestling with this,

  496. if I'm brave enough

  497. to test God out,

  498. what's the one place

  499. I can look to really get

  500. the best glimpse

  501. of his glory,

  502. to know what he's really like?

  503. Give me one vista

  504. that I can look out over

  505. and ponder for a while.

  506. Should it be the Grand Canyon?

  507. I mean,

  508. that is a glorious place.

  509. Maybe it's the Gulf of Mexico.

  510. I got summer vacation coming up.

  511. I go to the beach

  512. and I'll think about it.

  513. It's beautiful.

  514. I want to encourage you.

  515. I want to urge you

  516. to go to the cross of Jesus,

  517. to gaze on Jesus there

  518. for just a little while.

  519. Remember,

  520. the way that we glorify God

  521. is by seeing him

  522. and believing who he is.

  523. God is glorified

  524. when his character is revealed.

  525. And he says,

  526. there is no better place

  527. to get a glimpse of me

  528. than the cross of Jesus,

  529. to let the weight

  530. of who I am

  531. really sink in

  532. to your soul.

  533. This is what Jesus

  534. tells us here.

  535. You can hear the power of God

  536. and the thunder,

  537. the voice,

  538. but that voice says

  539. that he's actually going

  540. to show his glory again.

  541. Jesus explains

  542. that this is where

  543. it comes from.

  544. Now is the judgment

  545. of this world.

  546. Now will the ruler

  547. of this world be cast out.

  548. Here's where it's all happening.

  549. And I,

  550. when I am lifted up

  551. from the earth,

  552. will draw all people

  553. to myself.

  554. He said this

  555. to show by what kind of death

  556. he was going to die.

  557. The Gentiles,

  558. even.

  559. Everyone,

  560. everywhere,

  561. drawn to a dying king?

  562. The people listening

  563. understand what Jesus means,

  564. what he's talking about.

  565. They say,

  566. can you really be

  567. the divine Messiah

  568. if you're about to die?

  569. And what does Jesus say?

  570. Believe me.

  571. Now,

  572. I'm headed to the cross

  573. to die

  574. and so many won't believe,

  575. but you

  576. can still be sons of God

  577. simply by trusting me.

  578. Trust yourself to me.

  579. I'll take you to the cross

  580. and then you'll rise

  581. with me too.

  582. That's where to look.

  583. Look at the cross.

  584. Okay,

  585. well how does the cross

  586. show me God's glory?

  587. I'm looking,

  588. I'm looking,

  589. what do I see?

  590. What does it reveal

  591. about who he is?

  592. Let me give you

  593. three pairs

  594. of character qualities

  595. for God

  596. that I think

  597. will allow us

  598. to marvel together

  599. for a couple minutes

  600. here as we wrap up.

  601. First,

  602. we look at the cross,

  603. we see God's holiness

  604. and his nearness.

  605. The cross shows us

  606. God is holy,

  607. completely other,

  608. different,

  609. set apart,

  610. totally pure,

  611. far from sinful people.

  612. He can't stomach sin

  613. and

  614. he is near

  615. to broken sinners,

  616. isn't he?

  617. Weeping with us,

  618. bleeding for us,

  619. agonizing in our place

  620. the way only a sinner

  621. deserves to hurt.

  622. Do you see him

  623. like that

  624. on the cross?

  625. believing

  626. that that's

  627. who God is

  628. means in your life

  629. when you suffer

  630. or you hurt,

  631. you embrace

  632. the truth

  633. that you're not alone,

  634. are you?

  635. Because God

  636. is near

  637. the brokenhearted.

  638. If the sin

  639. of the world

  640. didn't keep him away,

  641. neither will your

  642. failure,

  643. right?

  644. Believe that.

  645. What glory

  646. there is.

  647. Can you believe

  648. that even the worst

  649. you could do

  650. can't keep God

  651. from you?

  652. Believe him.

  653. Next,

  654. God is self-exalting

  655. and self-sacrificing.

  656. The cross

  657. is the moment

  658. of great

  659. divine victory

  660. over his

  661. arch enemy.

  662. It's the moment

  663. that Jesus says

  664. he is lifted up.

  665. It's the moment

  666. that God

  667. through darkness

  668. in the middle

  669. of the day

  670. draws the spotlight

  671. of all of creation

  672. on himself

  673. to show what?

  674. Some amazing act

  675. of grandeur,

  676. some miracle,

  677. some powerful sign

  678. to show that he's

  679. sacrificing himself,

  680. enduring pain,

  681. standing apparently

  682. defeated

  683. in the place

  684. of his creatures.

  685. Paradoxically,

  686. God is so far

  687. beyond us

  688. that he's not

  689. too good for us.

  690. Do you see that

  691. at the cross?

  692. Do you believe

  693. that in the sacrifice

  694. of himself,

  695. God displays

  696. his highest

  697. and greatest glory?

  698. glory?

  699. Do you see

  700. how important

  701. his glory

  702. is to him

  703. and how tremendously

  704. valuable you are

  705. at the same time?

  706. Too good to believe

  707. that those things

  708. could be true together?

  709. Yes,

  710. he is

  711. that good.

  712. You gazing at the cross

  713. with me?

  714. There's Jesus.

  715. He's crying out

  716. with the only breath

  717. that he can muster.

  718. My God,

  719. my God,

  720. why hast thou

  721. forsaken me?

  722. What's happening?

  723. The justice

  724. of God

  725. is crashing down

  726. on the sin bearer.

  727. God,

  728. in his justice,

  729. is punishing sin

  730. as it deserves

  731. even a glimmer

  732. of God's glorious

  733. justice

  734. should make us

  735. quake in our boots

  736. at the seriousness

  737. of sin.

  738. Is the weight

  739. of sin's

  740. just desserts

  741. reflected in our lives?

  742. Or do we live

  743. like we think of sin

  744. but lightly

  745. nor suppose

  746. the evil great?

  747. We tremble

  748. at God's justice

  749. and we also rest

  750. in a God

  751. who will judge

  752. evil,

  753. who will make

  754. things right.

  755. We need

  756. his justice,

  757. don't we?

  758. He is a God

  759. of justice

  760. and yet the God

  761. of justice

  762. is a God

  763. of grace.

  764. Even as he totals

  765. the unimaginable

  766. debt of sin,

  767. he pays it all.

  768. The enormous price

  769. to have us

  770. in relationship

  771. with him,

  772. doesn't he?

  773. The curtain

  774. is torn.

  775. You are welcomed

  776. into God's presence.

  777. You are set

  778. free from all

  779. of your sin,

  780. past,

  781. present,

  782. and future

  783. into relationship

  784. with him.

  785. You'll never pay

  786. for it.

  787. God is that

  788. gracious.

  789. Do you believe

  790. that

  791. when Satan

  792. tempts you

  793. to despair

  794. and tells you

  795. of the guilt

  796. within?

  797. Do you know

  798. it glorifies

  799. God

  800. when you

  801. respond,

  802. Jesus

  803. paid it all.

  804. In the cross

  805. be my glory

  806. ever.

  807. My faith

  808. has found

  809. a resting

  810. place.

  811. His wounds

  812. for me

  813. shall plead.

  814. It is enough

  815. that Jesus

  816. died

  817. and that he

  818. died

  819. for me.

  820. He's holy

  821. and he's near.

  822. He is

  823. self-exalting

  824. and he's

  825. self-sacrificing.

  826. He is a God

  827. of justice

  828. and a God

  829. of grace.

  830. This

  831. is the

  832. glorious

  833. God

  834. Jesus

  835. is calling

  836. you to trust

  837. and no other.

  838. Seeing him

  839. and believing

  840. who he is

  841. is what you

  842. were made

  843. for.

  844. It's your

  845. chief end,

  846. your highest

  847. purpose,

  848. glorifying

  849. God.

  850. The relationship

  851. that you

  852. long for

  853. is with

  854. him,

  855. the one

  856. with true

  857. glory.

  858. Give weight

  859. to his

  860. view of you.

  861. Know that

  862. his words

  863. matter more

  864. than any

  865. others.

  866. Marvel at

  867. him until

  868. your heart

  869. says,

  870. to God

  871. alone

  872. be the

  873. glory.

  874. And when

  875. you do

  876. that,

  877. you will

  878. actually find

  879. glory.

  880. glory.

  881. Your

  882. quest

  883. for glory

  884. will

  885. culminate.

  886. And you

  887. may ask

  888. how?

  889. How does

  890. God's

  891. having

  892. glory

  893. actually

  894. help me

  895. to find

  896. glory?

  897. That doesn't

  898. make any

  899. sense.

  900. Listen,

  901. I need to

  902. connect this

  903. dot.

  904. Don't miss

  905. this.

  906. When you

  907. soak in

  908. the love

  909. of God

  910. for you

  911. on display

  912. most

  913. extravagantly

  914. at the

  915. cross,

  916. you

  917. will

  918. know

  919. that you

  920. matter

  921. forever.

  922. And it

  923. won't be

  924. from some

  925. other person

  926. who gave

  927. you a

  928. trophy

  929. or someone

  930. else who

  931. promised to

  932. be faithful

  933. to you

  934. and broke

  935. your heart.

  936. It won't be

  937. a career

  938. you threw

  939. yourself into

  940. so that no

  941. matter what

  942. anyone else

  943. said,

  944. you could

  945. tell yourself

  946. that you

  947. were valuable

  948. and have a

  949. bank account

  950. and a house

  951. and a car

  952. to back

  953. it up.

  954. It won't

  955. be your

  956. own beauty,

  957. your own

  958. capacities,

  959. your own

  960. performance,

  961. or anything

  962. at all,

  963. which is so

  964. wonderful because

  965. all of those

  966. glories can be

  967. easily lost,

  968. can't they?

  969. You will

  970. have glory.

  971. You will

  972. matter.

  973. You will

  974. be valuable

  975. because the

  976. God of the

  977. universe,

  978. the Lord

  979. of all

  980. glory,

  981. gives

  982. himself

  983. in exchange

  984. for you

  985. at the

  986. cross.

  987. Can you

  988. believe it?

  989. You are

  990. precious.

  991. You are

  992. valuable.

  993. You matter.

  994. you have

  995. glory.

  996. No one

  997. and nothing

  998. can ever

  999. take that

  1000. glory away

  1001. from you,

  1002. even if the

  1003. person you

  1004. love dies,

  1005. or you get

  1006. to where you

  1007. can't remember

  1008. their name.

  1009. Even if you

  1010. lose your

  1011. job,

  1012. you have an

  1013. accident,

  1014. you can't

  1015. work.

  1016. You can't

  1017. care for your

  1018. kids anymore.

  1019. You will

  1020. still have

  1021. glory.

  1022. Glory from

  1023. the one who

  1024. has and

  1025. shares true

  1026. glory.

  1027. It's the only

  1028. way to have

  1029. it.

  1030. And he gives

  1031. it to you.

  1032. And Jesus

  1033. wants you to

  1034. believe this for

  1035. the first time

  1036. this morning,

  1037. or for the

  1038. thousandth time.

  1039. He wants it to

  1040. come home to

  1041. your heart.

  1042. So he gave

  1043. this sacrament

  1044. to his

  1045. followers as a

  1046. memorial of

  1047. his death.

  1048. In fact,

  1049. as more than

  1050. a memorial,

  1051. as a spirit

  1052. empowered

  1053. assurance that

  1054. he has shared

  1055. his glory with

  1056. you.

  1057. That's what you're

  1058. going to taste.

  1059. It's why he sat

  1060. with his disciples

  1061. on the night he

  1062. was betrayed

  1063. and took bread

  1064. and he broke

  1065. it and he gave

  1066. it to them.

  1067. As I'm

  1068. ministering in

  1069. his name,

  1070. give this bread

  1071. to you.

  1072. Jesus said,

  1073. take and eat.

  1074. This is my

  1075. body given

  1076. for you.

  1077. Do this

  1078. in remembrance

  1079. of me.

  1080. And in the

  1081. same way after

  1082. supper,

  1083. he took the

  1084. cup and

  1085. said,

  1086. this cup is

  1087. the new

  1088. covenant in

  1089. my blood,

  1090. which is shed

  1091. for many for

  1092. the forgiveness

  1093. of sins.

  1094. drink from

  1095. it,

  1096. all of you.

  1097. For as often

  1098. as you eat

  1099. this bread

  1100. and drink

  1101. this cup,

  1102. you proclaim

  1103. the Lord's

  1104. death

  1105. until he

  1106. comes.

  1107. God sets

  1108. this table

  1109. to eat

  1110. with us

  1111. and he also

  1112. warns us

  1113. to examine

  1114. ourselves as

  1115. we see

  1116. this table

  1117. before us

  1118. and consider

  1119. coming to it.

  1120. If you come

  1121. here glorying

  1122. only in the

  1123. cross of

  1124. Jesus,

  1125. repenting

  1126. of other

  1127. sources of

  1128. glory your

  1129. heart often

  1130. chases after,

  1131. living in

  1132. glorious peace

  1133. with his

  1134. brothers and

  1135. sisters,

  1136. then come

  1137. and celebrate

  1138. with us.

  1139. If you

  1140. examine yourself

  1141. this morning

  1142. and you find

  1143. that actually

  1144. other things

  1145. carry more

  1146. weight

  1147. than God

  1148. for you,

  1149. that other

  1150. people that

  1151. you refuse

  1152. to love

  1153. or forgive

  1154. as he has,

  1155. that there's

  1156. other hope

  1157. besides the

  1158. blood of

  1159. Jesus that

  1160. you are

  1161. holding on

  1162. to,

  1163. then don't

  1164. come take

  1165. this sacrament.

  1166. But Jesus

  1167. invites you

  1168. to believe

  1169. in him.

  1170. He invites you

  1171. to come.

  1172. You can come

  1173. up to these

  1174. tables this

  1175. morning and

  1176. have a front

  1177. row seat

  1178. to see

  1179. his love,

  1180. his sacrifice,

  1181. what he

  1182. would do

  1183. for you

  1184. to give

  1185. glory and

  1186. to show

  1187. you how

  1188. precious you

  1189. are to

  1190. him.

  1191. Come and

  1192. see his

  1193. love,

  1194. believe in

  1195. him and

  1196. have life

  1197. eternal and

  1198. glory eternal

  1199. that will

  1200. never be

  1201. taken from

  1202. you.

  1203. Let me pray

  1204. and then we'll

  1205. come celebrate

  1206. together.

  1207. Lord Jesus

  1208. whether we

  1209. know you

  1210. and come

  1211. to taste

  1212. your body

  1213. and blood

  1214. again or

  1215. whether we're

  1216. not sure

  1217. what you're

  1218. about but

  1219. we're watching

  1220. a picture of

  1221. something that's

  1222. unlike anything

  1223. we've seen

  1224. before.

  1225. Would you

  1226. work by your

  1227. spirit faith

  1228. in our hearts

  1229. that we might

  1230. believe something

  1231. we didn't even

  1232. come here to

  1233. believe this

  1234. morning,

  1235. that we might

  1236. remember our

  1237. value comes

  1238. from you,

  1239. the Lord of

  1240. glory.

  1241. We might

  1242. rest in a

  1243. God who would

  1244. give himself

  1245. for us.

  1246. Meet us in

  1247. this time,

  1248. use common

  1249. elements for a

  1250. holy purpose we

  1251. ask in Jesus'

  1252. name.

  1253. Amen.
