  1. You are listening to a message from Southwood Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama.

  2. Our passion is to experience and express grace.

  3. Join us.

  4. I have been driven many times upon my knees by the overwhelming conviction that I had

  5. nowhere else to go.

  6. My own wisdom and that of all about me seemed insufficient for that day.

  7. Anybody know who said that?

  8. Anybody know?

  9. Was it me at a recent session meeting?

  10. Could have been, could have been, but no, wasn't me.

  11. It was the most powerful man in the world, surrounded by the wisest counselors in the country.

  12. Is that helping anybody yet?

  13. Abraham Lincoln, very good.

  14. Abraham Lincoln, driven to prayer.

  15. What a privilege to carry everything to God in prayer.

  16. We've been talking this summer about the friend that we have in Jesus.

  17. Our relationship with him, walking in the pathways of his grace.

  18. Getting to linger with him over a meal as he insists on doing this with his people and

  19. as he calls us to make a high priority in our lives.

  20. We started by saying a significant part of our relationships with God is his word.

  21. That God speaks to us and we must listen to him.

  22. Bible's open, right?

  23. God speaks to us.

  24. That is amazing, isn't it?

  25. But there's another side of that coin in relationship with God that I think may be even more remarkable

  26. than the fact that God speaks to us is that God listens to us.

  27. That's part of the conversation.

  28. See, God invites us into conversation with him so God listens to us and we speak to God himself.

  29. There are the titles of our sermons for today and next week.

  30. God listens to us.

  31. We speak to God.

  32. We're going to talk for a couple weeks about prayer.

  33. It's another classic means of grace.

  34. A pathway where we walk with Jesus, find his grace to come into our lives.

  35. See how closely the Bible and prayer are connected to one another?

  36. They feed one another in our relationship, our conversation with God.

  37. Right now, my preferred method of praying is to be reading scripture and praying along with those words.

  38. Maybe just one verse or one section at a time as I hear God's word speaking to me.

  39. The words that come into my heart to speak back to him.

  40. I even pray out loud typically.

  41. I know not everybody does.

  42. I will pray out loud to help me experience those actual conversations.

  43. I want us to ponder this morning that remarkable reality that God listens to us.

  44. And think about how prayer then is a consistent way that God brings his grace into our lives.

  45. Let's read from Hebrews chapter 4 as we begin.

    Hebrews 4 chapter mention

  46. We've heard parts of this passage referenced already this morning.

  47. It's a wonderful call to prayer that we'll come back to later.

  48. Let's give our attention to God's voice as he speaks to us in his word.

  49. Hebrews 4 beginning at verse 14.

  50. Since then, we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens.

  51. Jesus, the Son of God.

  52. Let us hold fast our confession.

  53. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses,

  54. but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.

  55. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

  56. Pray with me.

  57. Our Father, we seek now to find your help.

  58. We've opened your word before us.

  59. It is eternal and powerful and perfect.

  60. And we want to have a relationship with you.

  61. We want to know you.

  62. And that is, honestly, Father, it's too glorious for us to, in some ways, imagine, certainly for us to make it happen.

  63. It's a relationship we don't deserve.

  64. An audience with you is one we could never earn.

  65. And so would you help us even now?

  66. We need your grace.

  67. We ask for it in the precious name of Jesus, your Son, whom you love.

  68. Amen.

  69. If you had been in the D.C. airport last week, you might have overheard my phone conversation while I waited for my connecting flight.

  70. I'll give you a sample.

  71. Speak to an agent.

  72. Speak to an agent.

  73. I would like to speak to an agent.

  74. Zero.

  75. Zero.

  76. Zero.

  77. Speak to an agent.

  78. Fine.

  79. Mortgage transfer.

  80. Back to menu.

  81. Speak to an agent.

  82. Speak to an agent.

  83. I know you want more info, but I want to speak to an agent.

  84. And this went on for quite some time.

  85. Conversation with an automated recording.

  86. And then I finally got an agent who introduced herself, who got my name and promptly said,

  87. let me put you on a brief hold.

  88. The third time I think that I said speak to an agent,

  89. a couple people sitting nearby smiled understandingly.

  90. Because I think we've all been there, right?

  91. Needing help and wanting to know that someone is listening and that they're there to help.

  92. I think all of us who have ever prayed have been there too.

  93. Some of you have told me that this morning.

  94. Hearing nothing but an automated recording,

  95. as though our prayers are hitting the ceiling and bouncing back.

  96. Getting nowhere.

  97. Wondering if I'm wasting my time.

  98. Is anyone even listening?

  99. Even biblical authors like King David have felt this tension.

  100. He says things like,

  101. God, why are you so far from my groaning?

  102. Why do you not answer me?

  103. Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble?

  104. Those are real feelings, right?

  105. Many of us have had them.

  106. And at the same time, the Bible teaches us over and over

  107. that while we may feel God doesn't hear an answer,

  108. while we feel that our prayers are doing absolutely nothing,

  109. the foundational reality of our relationship with God

  110. is that he is a prayer-hearing, prayer-answering God.

  111. Oh, you who hear prayer,

  112. to you shall all flesh come.

  113. Psalm 65 too.

  114. Part of God's very nature is that he hears prayer.

  115. When his people pray, God listens.

  116. It's who he is.

  117. He demonstrates that part of who he is throughout

  118. the story of his relationship with his people.

  119. Just flip through one page after another.

  120. It's the pattern of our relationship with him.

  121. All the way back to when the people of Israel cried out

  122. under unjust oppression in Egypt.

  123. What happened?

  124. Yahweh heard and he sent them a deliverer.

  125. Hannah prayed to God in her distress over not having a child

  126. and she wept bitterly.

  127. And God heard her cry and gave her Samuel.

  128. King Jehoshaphat came before the God of Israel seeking military aid

  129. to protect his people, praying,

  130. we do not know what to do, but our eyes are upon you.

  131. And God delivered them again.

  132. Jonah prayed to God from where?

  133. Where was Jonah in his most famous prayer?

  134. In the belly of a whale.

  135. He described it as the very depths of hell.

  136. And when he prayed, his prayer went from the depths of hell

  137. all the way up into God's holy temple.

  138. The presence of God.

  139. The prayer went all the way there.

  140. God heard.

  141. And God commanded the fish to spit Jonah out.

  142. Incredible, isn't it?

  143. Can you believe it?

  144. God always hears prayer no matter how far away we feel.

  145. No matter how much we are struggling.

  146. No matter how far away from him we truly are.

  147. In the New Testament, that pattern continues.

  148. The early Christians devoted themselves to prayer

  149. and God added to their number daily those who were being saved.

  150. What amazing things happen when God's people pray, right?

  151. A church gathers to pray in Acts.

  152. Just a small congregation gathered in a home.

  153. And why are they gathered to pray?

  154. Because Peter is in prison and he's facing death.

  155. And they are gathered and praying

  156. when all of a sudden their prayer meeting is interrupted by Peter.

  157. Because God has heard their prayers,

  158. has sent an angel to set Peter free

  159. and restore him to his church family.

  160. This is why the Heidelberg Catechism says

  161. that our prayers are more assuredly heard by God

  162. than we feel we actually desire what we're asking for.

  163. That's why theologian J.I. Packer says

  164. God is always more ready to hear than we are to pray.

  165. See, when we feel prayer doesn't do anything,

  166. that assumes that we can see all the results, doesn't it?

  167. We may not even be looking in the right direction.

  168. And often it assumes that prayer is about changing God,

  169. when in reality it's about changing us.

  170. God uses prayer in our relationship with Him.

  171. It's part of the conversation.

  172. So He's using it in our relationship to bring His grace into our lives,

  173. which is impossible unless He hears.

  174. His hearing our prayers is foundational.

  175. But then how?

  176. How is prayer actually a pathway of grace where we meet Jesus?

  177. Isn't it just something where we're asking God to do some stuff for us?

  178. Giving Him the list?

  179. Before that, prayer actually helps us to see our nature rightly.

  180. It positions us appropriately in relationship to God.

  181. See, it's not just about getting something from God.

  182. In prayer, our hearts are reoriented.

  183. They're reset.

  184. Hebrews 4 talks about our weaknesses.

  185. And it tells us we should draw near to God because we need His grace.

  186. See, when you pray, you are posturing yourself toward God,

  187. not as the strong one in the relationship, right?

  188. Not as the one with the answers.

  189. Not as the one calling the shots,

  190. but rather as the dependent one.

  191. That's the true nature of our relationship to God.

  192. See, that happens before God answers your prayer

  193. or does anything for you, doesn't it?

  194. I'm speaking merely of the grace of having your heart shaped in humility,

  195. which is needed and not natural for very independent,

  196. resourceful people like you and me.

  197. Prayer slows us down.

  198. We're doing less in that moment,

  199. so we have to trust God more.

  200. And that's right.

  201. Jude reminds us in his letter that part of building yourself up

  202. in faith in God is praying as you wait for God.

  203. Prayer teaches us even as we do it,

  204. not to rely on ourselves,

  205. but to place our trust in Him.

  206. Recognizing this deep dependence,

  207. this great need for prayer

  208. is one of our core commitments as a church.

  209. It's something we're committed to

  210. because it's so vital

  211. and we so quickly forget the blessing

  212. of coming to God as we truly should,

  213. empty-handed as weak people

  214. to a strong Father.

  215. Many times we'd prefer to ignore that reality

  216. about ourselves.

  217. I really love the way theologian B.B. Warfield

  218. explained this over a hundred years ago.

  219. It's a bit long, but I think it's worth it.

  220. He's talking here about the impact of prayer on our hearts.

  221. What does it do to us as we pray?

  222. He says,

  223. No one can take this attitude,

  224. this posture of dependent prayer,

  225. even once without an effect on his character.

  226. No one can take it in a crisis of his life

  227. without his whole subsequent life

  228. feeling the influence in its sweeter,

  229. humbler, more devout, and restful course.

  230. No one can take it habitually

  231. without being made

  232. merely by its natural reflex influence

  233. a different man

  234. in a very profound sense

  235. from what he otherwise would have been.

  236. Prayer, thus, in its very nature,

  237. because it is an act of self-abnegation,

  238. meaning of humbling ourselves,

  239. a throwing of ourselves at the feet

  240. of one recognized as higher and greater than we

  241. and as one on whom we depend

  242. and in whom we trust

  243. is a most beneficial influence

  244. in this hard life of ours.

  245. How? How is it?

  246. It places the soul

  247. in an attitude of less self-assertion

  248. and predisposes it to walk simply

  249. and humbly in the world.

  250. As a result, it is impossible to conceive

  251. of a praying man, therefore,

  252. as destitute of grace.

  253. There's so much there.

  254. Go back and read this later,

  255. but let me just ask you,

  256. would you benefit from walking more simply

  257. and humbly in this world?

  258. I would.

  259. Start praying regularly.

  260. Throw yourself at the feet

  261. of the strong one.

  262. But Warfield's conclusion is really

  263. where I'm pushing us this morning

  264. to realize that it is impossible

  265. because of the nature of this relationship,

  266. it is impossible to conceive

  267. of a praying man

  268. as destitute of grace.

  269. That they're inextricably connected,

  270. our prayers and God's grace coming to us.

  271. We don't merely pray for grace.

  272. In praying,

  273. we are actually experiencing grace.

  274. See, prayer is doing something.

  275. It is making a difference in you

  276. even when you don't realize it.

  277. It's making you a different person.

  278. It's shaping your heart differently.

  279. It's posturing your entire life differently.

  280. Hear it from someone else

  281. who has long been with Jesus,

  282. Andrew Murray.

  283. Though in its beginnings,

  284. prayer is so simple

  285. that the feeble child can pray,

  286. yet it is at the same time

  287. the highest and holiest work

  288. to which man can rise.

  289. It is fellowship

  290. with the unseen and most holy one.

  291. The powers of the eternal world

  292. have been placed at its disposal.

  293. It is the very essence of true religion,

  294. the channel of all blessings,

  295. the secret of power and life.

  296. The very essence of true religion,

  297. relationship with God,

  298. the channel of all blessings.

  299. It is the way we walk in his grace.

  300. It is the way in which they come to us,

  301. the secret of power and life.

  302. It points our hearts and our lives

  303. to true north.

  304. It orients us correctly.

  305. See, prayer is not just a lifeline

  306. to grab as a last resort in crisis

  307. when things are really spinning out of control.

  308. It is to be the life-giving air

  309. that we breathe moment by moment

  310. on our knees.

  311. We always, in every moment,

  312. need help.

  313. We're designed to be dependent

  314. on our God.

  315. Apart from me,

  316. you can do nothing,

  317. Jesus says.

  318. So come to me

  319. and depend on me

  320. and live this way

  321. and talk with me.

  322. Imagine if that were actually true.

  323. Imagine that every morning

  324. before you could walk

  325. or talk

  326. or even drink coffee.

  327. I know that some of you

  328. don't function right

  329. without your coffee, right?

  330. I won't ask for a show of hands.

  331. Many of you have confessed that to me.

  332. Imagine if in order

  333. to function the way you were made,

  334. you needed to call the helpline

  335. and you needed to get reset for the day

  336. to factory settings.

  337. You had to lie in your bed,

  338. call in,

  339. punch the numbers

  340. and get strength

  341. to even get started.

  342. You wouldn't forget,

  343. would you?

  344. Not with coffee on the line.

  345. You wouldn't overlook it

  346. to think you were okay

  347. on your own,

  348. would you?

  349. You wouldn't skip over it

  350. to get to more productive activities,

  351. would you?

  352. You wouldn't be able to.

  353. You wouldn't be able

  354. to do anything more productive

  355. until you did it.

  356. Prayer, see,

  357. sets our self-reliant hearts

  358. back in the right perspective.

  359. It's part of why we need it so much.

  360. We are dependent.

  361. We are needy.

  362. We are the children.

  363. I can't do this life on my own.

  364. I have to start, God,

  365. in relationship with you,

  366. coming to you.

  367. And if that's true,

  368. then it is equally important

  369. that the person who answers the helpline

  370. is actually helpful, isn't it?

  371. That they don't put us on hold.

  372. That they can effectively address our needs.

  373. I mean, it is one thing

  374. to admit our need

  375. and to call in.

  376. But it's another

  377. to find the source of grace

  378. to meet that need.

  379. To actually hear a voice

  380. on the other end.

  381. Someone who actually answers

  382. and really helps.

  383. How about this?

  384. What does Hebrews tell us?

  385. Verse 16.

  386. Let us then with confidence

  387. draw near to the throne of grace

  388. that we may receive mercy

  389. and find grace to help

  390. in time of need.

  391. We need to draw near to,

  392. to walk closely with,

  393. to enjoy relationship with God

  394. because what is it that we need?

  395. We need grace.

  396. And he sits where?

  397. On the throne of grace.

  398. He's reigning on the thing

  399. that is characterized

  400. by what we most need

  401. so we can expect

  402. to find with him

  403. mercy

  404. and grace.

  405. Gifts

  406. that we don't deserve

  407. in all their forms

  408. that come through Jesus himself.

  409. Comfort.

  410. Right?

  411. Wisdom

  412. whenever we ask,

  413. he says.

  414. Strength

  415. when we're weak.

  416. Peace

  417. when we're anxious.

  418. All of his various

  419. undeserved gifts

  420. that come to us

  421. through prayer.

  422. Whether we get

  423. the answer

  424. that we were specifically

  425. looking for

  426. or not

  427. because prayer

  428. reminds us

  429. about God,

  430. about who he is,

  431. that he is naturally

  432. by his very nature

  433. gracious

  434. and caring.

  435. Even better

  436. than we sometimes

  437. expect he could be.

  438. Even better

  439. than we think

  440. we're experiencing

  441. him to be.

  442. Even better

  443. than we know

  444. how to ask him

  445. to be.

  446. Cast all your anxieties

  447. on him

  448. because he

  449. cares

  450. for you.

  451. he cares

  452. for you.

  453. That's the God

  454. to whom you pray.

  455. The pastor

  456. doesn't feel like that.

  457. I know.

  458. But it doesn't look

  459. like he's

  460. I know.

  461. And he wants you

  462. to know

  463. he cares

  464. for you.

  465. That's why

  466. you can count

  467. when you come

  468. to him

  469. on finding

  470. grace.

  471. I don't know

  472. what the grace

  473. will look like

  474. but you can

  475. count on him

  476. for that.

  477. Andrew Murray

  478. again

  479. in the infinite

  480. tenderness

  481. and pity

  482. and patience

  483. of the infinite

  484. father.

  485. What is he like?

  486. Infinitely tender

  487. and pitying

  488. and patient

  489. in his loving

  490. readiness

  491. to hear

  492. and to help

  493. the life

  494. of prayer

  495. has its joy.

  496. That's where

  497. the joy

  498. comes from.

  499. I think

  500. this image

  501. is famous

  502. because it

  503. does such a

  504. great job

  505. of capturing

  506. that joy

  507. in our

  508. relationship

  509. with God.

  510. John F.

  511. Kennedy

  512. was the most

  513. powerful man

  514. in the world.

  515. In the Oval

  516. Office

  517. sitting behind

  518. the Resolute

  519. desk

  520. very few

  521. people got

  522. an invitation

  523. to come in

  524. there with

  525. him,

  526. right?

  527. Except

  528. John F.

  529. Kennedy Jr.

  530. pictured

  531. happily playing

  532. underneath the

  533. desk.

  534. What's going

  535. on?

  536. Why is he

  537. there?

  538. Who invited

  539. him in?

  540. His father

  541. did

  542. because he

  543. was his

  544. son

  545. with

  546. unparalleled

  547. access

  548. to his

  549. father.

  550. Look at

  551. how much

  552. fun he's

  553. having in

  554. that grand

  555. place of

  556. power.

  557. But I want

  558. you to

  559. notice he's

  560. not the

  561. only one

  562. having fun.

  563. Look at

  564. the smile

  565. on his

  566. father's

  567. face.

  568. I think

  569. his father

  570. is enjoying

  571. his presence.

  572. What a

  573. beautiful picture

  574. of our

  575. relationship

  576. with God

  577. who joyfully

  578. welcomes

  579. us into

  580. his presence.

  581. The throne

  582. room of

  583. heaven to

  584. the throne

  585. of grace

  586. because Jesus

  587. makes us his

  588. sons and

  589. daughters.

  590. Amen.

  591. This is where he

  592. wants you to

  593. come.

  594. This is what you

  595. can expect to

  596. find on his

  597. face when you

  598. do.

  599. Just as we

  600. did for the

  601. Bible the last

  602. couple of

  603. weeks, we've

  604. put together some

  605. resources to

  606. help guide you

  607. in speaking

  608. to God.

  609. This QR code

  610. is also in the

  611. bulletin so

  612. don't stress

  613. when it goes

  614. away.

  615. There are

  616. copies, hard

  617. copies if it

  618. helps you to

  619. have it printed

  620. in the

  621. narthex.

  622. But books

  623. or things to

  624. listen to or

  625. models for

  626. prayer that

  627. might help you

  628. if you're

  629. feeling stuck or

  630. frustrated right

  631. now in your

  632. conversation with

  633. God.

  634. Kids, you

  635. often teach us

  636. so much about

  637. how to pray.

  638. It's the way

  639. we're supposed to

  640. relate to God

  641. as his children

  642. and so you

  643. often teach us

  644. in that.

  645. There are ideas

  646. here for you

  647. too that speak

  648. your language.

  649. I'm going to

  650. talk more about

  651. some of these

  652. next week but

  653. there are ways

  654. we can follow

  655. God's direction

  656. in turning our

  657. hearts toward

  658. him in regular

  659. conversation.

  660. I want to

  661. encourage you as

  662. we're thinking

  663. about this just

  664. to give some

  665. attention to your

  666. prayer life,

  667. your walk with

  668. God, how you

  669. talk with him.

  670. Think about one

  671. way in which you

  672. might be able to

  673. give attention to

  674. that.

  675. Maybe to change

  676. something, maybe to

  677. enrich something that

  678. you're doing even

  679. this summer.

  680. We're going to talk

  681. next week through

  682. the Lord's Prayer

  683. one phrase at a

  684. time about the

  685. many different ways

  686. we pray, the

  687. different things we

  688. talk to God about.

  689. The way you pray

  690. doesn't need to look

  691. like the way I pray

  692. or the way someone

  693. else prays but

  694. there are a lot

  695. of different ways

  696. that God guides

  697. us, the different

  698. kinds of things

  699. we're to say when

  700. we're talking to

  701. him.

  702. So we'll talk about

  703. that next week but

  704. for today I want to

  705. focus on just the

  706. very beginning of

  707. that prayer.

  708. We prayed it

  709. together earlier.

  710. I want you to

  711. remember the way

  712. the prayer starts.

  713. That we're talking

  714. to whom when we

  715. pray?

  716. Our Father.

  717. Father.

  718. Our Father.

  719. You're talking to

  720. your Father so

  721. before we talk next

  722. week about some

  723. things to say I

  724. don't want you to

  725. get too hung up on

  726. saying the right

  727. thing.

  728. If you're a

  729. father you know

  730. how secondary that

  731. is to just getting

  732. to talk with your

  733. child to hear what's

  734. on their heart.

  735. He is listening in

  736. love.

  737. He's not here to

  738. critique your

  739. prayer.

  740. He loves hearing

  741. from his child.

  742. Puritan Thomas

  743. Watson.

  744. Were a man to

  745. petition his enemy

  746. there were little

  747. hope.

  748. But when a child

  749. petitions his

  750. father he may hope

  751. with confidence to

  752. succeed.

  753. The word Father

  754. works upon God.

  755. It touches his

  756. very bowels.

  757. Right at the heart.

  758. See Jesus tells us to

  759. call God Father.

  760. Not only does he do

  761. it and do you think

  762. God hears and

  763. answers when Jesus

  764. prays to him?

  765. Most of us would say

  766. yeah.

  767. Yeah.

  768. Yeah I think so.

  769. Jesus says you call

  770. my Father your

  771. Father.

  772. You come to him with

  773. the same relationship

  774. because of what I have

  775. done for you.

  776. that is why we can

  777. confidently draw near

  778. to God because he

  779. calls us to come.

  780. Let us with confidence

  781. draw near.

  782. Jesus knows our

  783. every weakness.

  784. We have a sympathetic

  785. high priest who has

  786. come down and met us

  787. and brought us back

  788. into the throne of

  789. grace confidently.

  790. Boldly.

  791. He says pick up the

  792. phone and say speak to a

  793. Father.

  794. Speak to a Father.

  795. Speak to a Father.

  796. And he answers.

  797. Oh what peace we often

  798. forfeit.

  799. Oh what needless pain we

  800. bear.

  801. All because we do not

  802. carry everything to God

  803. in prayer.

  804. And we can come

  805. consistently over and

  806. over confidently in

  807. prayer because our

  808. Father delights to give

  809. good gifts to his

  810. children.

  811. That's grace.

  812. That's who he is.

  813. And he knows that there

  814. is no better gift that

  815. he can give us than his

  816. very self.

  817. Right after Jesus teaches

  818. us to pray the Lord's

  819. prayer he comes back in

  820. Luke 11 to talk about

  821. what it means that God

  822. is our Father.

  823. And what his heart is

  824. and how he loves us like

  825. that.

  826. And he tells us that

  827. what God as our Father

  828. loves to do when we pray

  829. to him is to give the

  830. Holy Spirit to those who

  831. ask him.

  832. To meet us with his

  833. very self.

  834. To walk with us.

  835. To listen to us.

  836. To remind us of his

  837. delight in our

  838. relationship.

  839. That he's so glad we're

  840. here.

  841. And talking with him

  842. again.

  843. That father-child

  844. relationship is designed

  845. even though we don't

  846. always experience it

  847. that way.

  848. It's designed to be so

  849. close.

  850. So personal.

  851. That in the Old

  852. Testament you would

  853. never call God your

  854. father when you

  855. prayed.

  856. It wasn't right.

  857. It wasn't okay.

  858. That was out of respect

  859. for his distinct

  860. holiness.

  861. That he was utterly

  862. beyond us.

  863. But Jesus

  864. always

  865. calls God

  866. father

  867. when he prays.

  868. Every

  869. single

  870. time.

  871. Every

  872. Father.

  873. My father.

  874. Father.

  875. Every time Jesus

  876. prays in scripture

  877. except one.

  878. Except one time.

  879. When Jesus is on the

  880. cross.

  881. and the wrath of

  882. God towards our

  883. sin is being poured

  884. out on him and

  885. Jesus cries out

  886. my God

  887. my God

  888. why

  889. have you

  890. forsaken

  891. me?

  892. The only time

  893. he doesn't feel

  894. in the same way

  895. the nearness

  896. of his father.

  897. Why?

  898. Why did the

  899. father turn his

  900. face away?

  901. so that

  902. his wounds

  903. Jesus

  904. wounds

  905. would bring

  906. many

  907. sons

  908. to glory.

  909. Sons

  910. and daughters

  911. from every tribe

  912. and tongue

  913. and people

  914. and nation

  915. sitting here

  916. this morning

  917. that we would be

  918. brought to glory

  919. so that we would

  920. be welcomed

  921. under the

  922. desk

  923. into his

  924. presence

  925. to the very

  926. throne

  927. of grace

  928. so that we

  929. would be invited

  930. to sit at

  931. this table

  932. and share

  933. this meal

  934. with a God

  935. who is so

  936. holy

  937. that apart

  938. from him

  939. dealing with

  940. our sins

  941. we could never

  942. sit and eat

  943. with him

  944. the way he

  945. made us

  946. to

  947. and he

  948. made us

  949. for himself

  950. so he

  951. had to deal

  952. with our sins

  953. to have us

  954. back with him.

  955. Jesus used

  956. this meal

  957. to explain

  958. what he was

  959. doing

  960. as he went

  961. to the cross.

  962. he sat

  963. with his

  964. disciples

  965. that night

  966. and he took

  967. bread

  968. and he

  969. broke it

  970. and he

  971. gave it

  972. to them

  973. as I

  974. ministering

  975. in his

  976. name

  977. give this

  978. bread

  979. to you

  980. he said

  981. take

  982. eat

  983. this is

  984. my body

  985. given

  986. for you

  987. do this

  988. in remembrance

  989. of me

  990. and then

  991. in the same

  992. way after

  993. supper

  994. he took

  995. the cup

  996. and he

  997. said to

  998. them

  999. this cup

  1000. is the

  1001. new covenant

  1002. and my

  1003. blood

  1004. which is

  1005. shed

  1006. for many

  1007. for the

  1008. forgiveness

  1009. of sins

  1010. drink

  1011. from it

  1012. all of you

  1013. for as

  1014. often

  1015. as you

  1016. eat

  1017. this

  1018. bread

  1019. and you

  1020. drink

  1021. this

  1022. cup

  1023. you

  1024. proclaim

  1025. the

  1026. Lord's

  1027. death

  1028. until he

  1029. comes

  1030. you say

  1031. there is

  1032. no other

  1033. way

  1034. for me

  1035. to know

  1036. my

  1037. father

  1038. than that

  1039. his

  1040. son

  1041. would bring

  1042. me

  1043. into his

  1044. presence

  1045. if you

  1046. have never

  1047. trusted

  1048. Jesus

  1049. to pay

  1050. for your

  1051. sins

  1052. to welcome

  1053. you into

  1054. relationship

  1055. with your

  1056. heavenly father

  1057. or if

  1058. you have

  1059. but you're

  1060. not willing

  1061. today

  1062. to be

  1063. honest

  1064. to approach

  1065. him

  1066. honestly

  1067. about your

  1068. sin

  1069. to trust

  1070. him

  1071. to be

  1072. the only

  1073. one

  1074. whose

  1075. blood

  1076. can cover

  1077. you

  1078. and forgive

  1079. those sins

  1080. then don't

  1081. come eat

  1082. this morning

  1083. don't do

  1084. something

  1085. outwardly

  1086. that you're

  1087. not presently

  1088. believing

  1089. inwardly

  1090. that's

  1091. hypocrisy

  1092. and God

  1093. warns us

  1094. against

  1095. approaching

  1096. him

  1097. that way

  1098. in relationship

  1099. he welcomes

  1100. us to

  1101. come

  1102. honestly

  1103. we invite

  1104. you this

  1105. morning

  1106. if you're

  1107. in one

  1108. of those

  1109. places

  1110. today

  1111. not to

  1112. come

  1113. eat

  1114. but

  1115. we invite

  1116. you to

  1117. pray

  1118. to talk

  1119. with God

  1120. about it

  1121. to confess

  1122. your sin

  1123. even now

  1124. to him

  1125. we invite

  1126. you to

  1127. come let

  1128. us pray

  1129. with you

  1130. to observe

  1131. the body

  1132. and blood

  1133. of Jesus

  1134. given

  1135. for you

  1136. we're so

  1137. glad you're

  1138. here

  1139. wherever

  1140. your heart

  1141. is

  1142. but if

  1143. you are

  1144. weak

  1145. and needy

  1146. and desperate

  1147. and have

  1148. no other

  1149. way into

  1150. relationship

  1151. with God

  1152. other than

  1153. the blood

  1154. of Jesus

  1155. that you

  1156. have trusted

  1157. for yourself

  1158. then you

  1159. come

  1160. confidently

  1161. boldly

  1162. to the throne

  1163. of grace

  1164. and to this

  1165. table this

  1166. morning

  1167. because of

  1168. Jesus

  1169. not because

  1170. you've been

  1171. good

  1172. not because

  1173. you're a

  1174. Presbyterian

  1175. but because

  1176. you have

  1177. a father

  1178. who delights

  1179. in you

  1180. as his

  1181. child

  1182. who sent

  1183. his son

  1184. for you

  1185. so that

  1186. you can

  1187. confess

  1188. your sins

  1189. even now

  1190. and receive

  1191. his grace

  1192. afresh

  1193. as you

  1194. take and

  1195. eat and

  1196. drink

  1197. let's pray

  1198. and we'll

  1199. come do

  1200. that together

  1201. Jesus

  1202. we're so

  1203. humbled

  1204. by your

  1205. love

  1206. that is

  1207. so far

  1208. beyond

  1209. anything

  1210. we could

  1211. deserve

  1212. that brings

  1213. us into

  1214. a place

  1215. we never

  1216. else

  1217. could be

  1218. except that

  1219. you loved

  1220. us

  1221. and gave

  1222. yourself

  1223. for us

  1224. would we

  1225. come crawling

  1226. would we

  1227. stand

  1228. on our

  1229. knees

  1230. boldly

  1231. but humbly

  1232. knowing there's

  1233. no other

  1234. way

  1235. that we

  1236. could be

  1237. with you

  1238. and for

  1239. you

  1240. to welcome

  1241. us in

  1242. use these

  1243. very common

  1244. elements

  1245. to remind

  1246. our

  1247. doubting

  1248. weak

  1249. hearts

  1250. that you

  1251. have done

  1252. it

  1253. that it

  1254. is finished

  1255. and that we

  1256. have a father

  1257. who loves

  1258. us

  1259. do that work

  1260. by your spirit

  1261. we ask in the

  1262. name of Jesus
