  1. You are listening to a message from Southwood Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama.

  2. Our passion is to experience and express grace.

  3. Join us.

  4. We need the reminder of that song because life will disappoint you.

  5. Friends may let you down, but Jesus has not and will not fail us.

  6. He won't.

  7. Amen?

  8. Amen.

  9. He won't.

  10. We just wrapped up several weeks this summer talking about our relationships with God, walking with Jesus.

  11. What it looks like for us day by day as he meets us right where we are in our lives.

  12. If you were here, you'll remember that we marveled at the reality that God speaks to us.

  13. So we treasure listening to him and his word and meeting him there.

  14. And then perhaps even more amazing that God listens to us and so we can speak to him in prayer and meet him there.

  15. We rejoiced in the gifts of baptism and the Lord's Supper to God's people to meet us there, to taste his grace together.

  16. Together.

  17. Right?

  18. Right?

  19. And in the past couple weeks, Pastor Derek has so helpfully reminded us that God makes space for us so that we can share that space with others.

  20. Because we walk with Jesus and meet him every day in our relationships with one another in this family and with our neighbors all throughout our lives and everywhere God takes us.

  21. Now we are about to jump back into our study of John's gospel that we are over halfway through.

  22. We've been encountering the real Jesus, the historical man now in the final week of his life before the cross.

  23. And this fall we get an inside look from his beloved disciple at these final intimate words to his disciples on the night that he's betrayed.

  24. It's going to be awesome.

  25. I can't wait to get back into that together but actually we're going to wait one more week.

  26. Restart that study next Sunday.

  27. Today I want to remind us of the importance of our relationship with Jesus one more time.

  28. Both so that we remember what we've been talking about, what we've learned this summer, to reflect on that together.

  29. And to kind of build a bridge toward diving back into John and remembering why it is we so desperately need to see Jesus, to listen to him, to love him.

  30. As we go back to John and read more about him there.

  31. We never stop focusing on walking with, in relationship, Jesus.

  32. I want to look this morning at a hymn about Jesus in Colossians chapter 1.

    Colossians 1 chapter mention

  33. I want to take a few minutes with you to take a deep breath of Jesus, to reflect on your life wherever you are, especially if you're starting a new year.

  34. A new rhythm in many ways to consider what it could or should look like for Jesus to be in first place.

  35. For your walking with Jesus, moment by moment, day by day, to be the supreme purpose.

  36. The central foundation, the highest delight of your entire life.

  37. Let's read Colossians 1, beginning at verse 15.

  38. God's holy, inerrant, inspired word about his son, Jesus.

  39. He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation.

  40. For by him all things were created in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities.

  41. All things were created through him and for him.

  42. And he is before all things and in him all things hold together.

  43. And he is the head of the body, the church.

  44. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent.

  45. For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell.

  46. And through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.

  47. This is God's word.

  48. Let's ask for his help.

  49. Father, would you renew our hearts?

  50. Would you reorder our lives according to your glory and grace?

  51. By your word?

  52. By your spirit?

  53. We ask you to do it even now for us this morning.

  54. Change us forever.

  55. We ask in Jesus' name.

  56. Amen.

  57. I know many of you, like my family, have gotten to enjoy watching some of the Olympic competition this week.

  58. See those golden moments when the athletes in first place step to the top of the podium to be honored as the greatest in the world.

  59. Right?

  60. The fastest, the strongest, the best at their craft.

  61. Like these five amazing gymnast gold medalists.

  62. It was incredible to watch.

  63. Or like Katie Ledecky, the world's greatest distance swimmer who keeps finding herself on top of the podium year after year.

  64. Can you imagine it?

  65. So many amazing, gifted athletes all gathered together in one place competing.

  66. And then out of all of those, for someone to finish in first place.

  67. It's quite remarkable, isn't it?

  68. It's a great achievement.

  69. It's worthy of honor.

  70. That word first, the best, the top ranked in the world is used of Jesus several times in our passage today.

  71. It has even deeper meaning, even broader implications for us to see how and for what reason Jesus is in first place.

  72. I want us to do really two things this morning.

  73. First, for a few minutes, to wonder at the greatness of Jesus.

  74. And then for a few minutes, talk about what difference that actually makes in our lives.

  75. Is that greatness of Jesus coming home in the way that we relate to him and the way we live day in and day out?

  76. So, Paul starts here by first praising Jesus as first in creation.

  77. That word firstborn, which will be repeated in verse 18 to mark the second stanza of this hymn.

  78. Here it means that Jesus reigns supreme over all creation.

  79. He ranks first.

  80. He's number one.

  81. See, he made it all, didn't he?

  82. He is not created.

  83. Verse 16 is clear.

  84. He is creator.

  85. All things through him.

  86. Just as we read in John chapter 1, through him all things were made.

    John 1 chapter mention

  87. Without him nothing was made that has been made.

  88. Trees and flowers, bears and bugs and mountains and rivers, galaxies.

  89. Spiritual beings.

  90. Spiritual beings.

  91. All of them spring to life by the word of his power.

  92. Because he brings them into existence.

  93. And don't miss, by the way, while Paul is pointing this out.

  94. We're going to come back to this later.

  95. But they all exist for him.

  96. He is the goal of all creation.

  97. That is how high ranking the firstborn is.

  98. In fact, verse 17, it's not just that once upon a time he was the source of all of creation.

  99. But to this very moment, he is the one who powerfully holds it all together.

  100. Amazing.

  101. The bigness.

  102. The size of Jesus to be holding all of creation together.

  103. Some of you study space, right?

  104. You know a lot more about it than I do, okay?

  105. Way more.

  106. And you're still learning more about it.

  107. And it is mind-boggling as you consider space how small the biggest, strongest of all of us feels in that vast space.

  108. And yet the space that we study and that we explore, Jesus, is even in this very moment, he is sustaining it.

  109. He is holding it together.

  110. He is causing it not to explode.

  111. Wow.

  112. He's huge.

  113. Remember, we've seen it when he walked among us, right?

  114. This is the very Jesus who speaks and the powerful storm is still, right?

  115. Who prays and five loaves of bread and two fish feed 5,000 plus people with multiple leftovers.

  116. Who casts out a demon with a word.

  117. Who turns water into wine by merely asking.

  118. Who heals the worst diseases.

  119. Who even raises the dead.

  120. God, every power, every part of creation bows the knee to King Jesus.

  121. He is supreme.

  122. He is in first place.

  123. Because he is, in fact, the one true God.

  124. The image of the invisible God.

  125. The one who makes the unseen seen.

  126. The untouchable felt.

  127. The unknowable known.

  128. The idea here with that word is that it's not just a good copy.

  129. But it's something that participates in the very essence of the thing that it represents or reflects.

  130. That kind of image.

  131. Somewhat like a sunbeam.

  132. That is actually sun in itself, right?

  133. As well as it's how we feel the sun.

  134. The radiance of the glory of God, Hebrews says.

  135. The one who was with God and was God, John says.

  136. This is God himself.

  137. In a way you can touch and know and see.

  138. Jesus is first place in creation because he supremely makes the God that we so desperately need to know.

  139. One we can and do know.

  140. How wonderful that is.

  141. As if that weren't enough cause for wonder and worship at the person of Jesus.

  142. Stanza two then praises Jesus as first in the new creation.

  143. Verse 18.

  144. He is the head of the body, the church.

  145. He is the beginning.

  146. The first born from the dead.

  147. See, God who once upon a time breathed life into humanity.

  148. Now when he finds them dead and separated from himself.

  149. He breathes new life into people, doesn't he?

  150. He recreates them through the first born who rises from the dead.

  151. Jesus is supreme over the most powerful forces we know.

  152. Conquering sin and death.

  153. Becoming the first one to rise.

  154. Never more to die, but to reign forever.

  155. God exalted him to the highest place.

  156. First place.

  157. First place.

  158. And gave him the name above every name.

  159. The name of King Jesus.

  160. Supreme one.

  161. First place.

  162. Philippians 2 tells us.

  163. Jesus Christ is Lord.

  164. No one else.

  165. He is God in his fullness.

  166. Jesus Christ is Lord.

  167. Not merely a peace or a part of God, but the true God himself.

  168. Rising victorious to return to his throne where he has always reigned.

  169. And as he does that, in rising to his eternal throne, Jesus brings to life the new people of God who were far from God.

  170. Jesus brings to life the new creation of God that was suffering under the curse of God.

  171. He reconciles all things, verse 20 says, to God by the blood of his cross.

  172. Because he's the firstborn from the dead.

  173. And many, many will follow.

  174. See, his resurrection life is what gives us hope, right?

  175. His resurrection body.

  176. It heralds the renewal of all creation that is presently groaning or deteriorating.

  177. His resurrection power today fuels our life and mission.

  178. It's his resurrection presence at God's right hand that secures our adoption, our acceptance into the family of God.

  179. As some of the many who live never more to die.

  180. That's true of you.

  181. Never more to die.

  182. He will raise you with him forever with the Father.

  183. That is good stuff, church.

  184. This is why he is our head.

  185. This is why we are his people that are part of the entire creation that was made for him.

  186. We exist for his glory so that he will receive the praise that he deserves.

  187. We were created by him and for him.

  188. So we worship him.

  189. Join me in that.

  190. Let's worship Jesus today.

  191. And every day with full hearts.

  192. The only one who could give us life like that, right?

  193. Because he is the firstborn over all.

  194. The risen King Jesus is our head.

  195. The one who started all of this for us.

  196. The world's great creator.

  197. The greatest re-creator.

  198. The firstborn over all.

  199. With the result.

  200. The end of verse 18.

  201. That in everything he might be preeminent.

  202. Kids, preeminent is a fancy word for first place.

  203. It's got that same word first in the Greek.

  204. It may even be used here in this hymn as a title for Jesus.

  205. Like the incomparable Christ.

  206. The supreme one.

  207. The first place gold medalist Jesus.

  208. Now just consider this with me for a second as we begin to ask how this changes our lives.

  209. These gold medalists right here are great athletes, aren't they?

  210. World class gymnasts.

  211. But do you think that the five of them, is there any chance those women would get first place in basketball?

  212. On a track relay maybe?

  213. Could the great Katie Ledecky win first place in weightlifting or tennis?

  214. Is that likely?

  215. I think not.

  216. And yet Jesus is to be first place in everything.

  217. In every stage of life, no matter how young or old you are.

  218. In every area of life, no matter what you have on your schedule or agenda this week.

  219. In every single life.

  220. What about in your life?

  221. Is that where he is?

  222. See for most of us, most of the time,

  223. what we experience in our lives is Jesus as one among many slices of life that we have to manage.

  224. This right here is not the picture that the Bible gives us, to be clear.

  225. I don't want you to be confused.

  226. But you see Jesus here as one slice up there at the top of a pie.

  227. And we have to manage all of these things.

  228. With nothing at the center,

  229. with nothing in first place,

  230. supremely orchestrating the heart and goal of our lives,

  231. what happens?

  232. Our own instincts,

  233. our desires,

  234. our comfort,

  235. they become central

  236. and they direct us toward managing all these varied priorities,

  237. including Jesus,

  238. for our own purposes.

  239. This is true for all of us.

  240. We all have a lot of things to manage.

  241. But I've been thinking,

  242. especially this week of young people,

  243. as you start a new school year.

  244. Will you look at this pie with me for a couple minutes?

  245. This is one I made a special for you.

  246. You can read some of them.

  247. You'll notice Jesus is still there.

  248. Up there, kind of top right.

  249. Life can be really challenging.

  250. Can't it?

  251. I mean, just think, young people,

  252. all the relationships

  253. that you're managing,

  254. your family,

  255. your friends,

  256. all the classes at school,

  257. the different subjects you're trying to learn,

  258. what you look like,

  259. what you're going to wear,

  260. the hobbies you enjoy,

  261. or the college you're getting ready for,

  262. or the part-time job you have.

  263. You got to check social media to stay in the loop.

  264. You got to make sure you figure out what skibbity means,

  265. because otherwise you might be left out.

  266. I don't know what it means,

  267. but some of you do.

  268. And if you don't keep up with these things,

  269. you're going to be left out, right?

  270. That's an anxiety I would carry.

  271. And in the midst of all of that,

  272. you're trying to manage,

  273. and so much more,

  274. Jesus, too.

  275. Jesus is, like, really important to you,

  276. isn't he?

  277. But it's all just so much,

  278. so much to manage.

  279. You may even love Jesus so much

  280. that you think what many of us do,

  281. that what you really need to do

  282. is make that Jesus slice of the pie a bit larger,

  283. you know?

  284. Like, read a devotional,

  285. or rush to youth group as many times as possible,

  286. or join FCA,

  287. or something to make Jesus

  288. get just a little bit bigger, right?

  289. I get it.

  290. I've done that.

  291. But see what happens as the days go by,

  292. and more and more people come in,

  293. and more and more decisions,

  294. and more and more responsibilities,

  295. they all get added into your life,

  296. and you start to feel pressure

  297. to squeeze it all in,

  298. and somehow make it all make sense,

  299. and figure out who you are in the midst of that.

  300. And some of us hold that together

  301. longer than others, right?

  302. But eventually, at some point,

  303. it will just explode.

  304. It's just gonna fall apart.

  305. Maybe you've felt it,

  306. maybe you're feeling that it could be there

  307. in just a few days.

  308. We feel this overwhelming confusion,

  309. like, where do I even start

  310. to pick up the pieces,

  311. and know how to put my life back together,

  312. and figure out what I'm supposed to do.

  313. It feels like way too much.

  314. Kids, you know why it sometimes

  315. feels like way too much,

  316. and you start to feel pressure and anxiety,

  317. maybe even right now while I'm talking about it?

  318. Sometimes it feels like that because it is.

  319. It is too much.

  320. It is more than we can manage.

  321. And so,

  322. God is speaking to you today from His Word

  323. to tell you something that will help you

  324. not just with this school year,

  325. but with the rest of your life.

  326. Jesus first

  327. in everything.

  328. Everything.

  329. How many things do you leave out of everything?

  330. Nothing.

  331. In everything.

  332. Don't start by trying to figure everything out.

  333. It won't work on your own.

  334. Start by turning to Jesus.

  335. Seeing how supremely valuable He is,

  336. and then let Him direct all of those other things.

  337. See, it's not merely that Jesus needs to be

  338. a bigger slice of your life.

  339. That will just build pressure for you, won't it?

  340. It's truly that He is first place

  341. in every aspect of your life.

  342. So slowly, maybe one piece at a time,

  343. you can start by asking,

  344. what does it look like for Jesus

  345. to be first place in my schoolwork?

  346. That's a hard question.

  347. That'll take you a while to sort through.

  348. You can ask,

  349. what does it look like for Jesus

  350. to be first place in my friendships?

  351. What does it look like for Jesus

  352. to be first place in my money,

  353. my free time,

  354. with my phone?

  355. But we need to ask all those questions

  356. because He is that worthy.

  357. He is that wonderful

  358. that He would be first place

  359. in everything.

  360. Young people,

  361. if that seems tough to you,

  362. you should ask your parents

  363. how they're doing it, right?

  364. So that they can help you.

  365. But when you do that,

  366. when you go to your parents,

  367. you need to be patient

  368. because if they're anything

  369. like the adults in my house,

  370. they'll need to admit

  371. that they don't live with Jesus

  372. in first place

  373. in every area of life either.

  374. They're still learning.

  375. They're trying to figure that out

  376. and all that that means

  377. in their life.

  378. But we need to do that together.

  379. And don't you long to?

  380. Don't you long for that

  381. to be more of what your life is like?

  382. Wouldn't that give our lives purpose

  383. and direction

  384. and focus

  385. so that we're not overwhelmed

  386. all the time?

  387. But instead,

  388. we're living the way

  389. our Maker designed us to live,

  390. to flourish?

  391. Y'all, it's hard

  392. to keep Jesus in first place

  393. for a lot of reasons.

  394. We have so many commitments

  395. that we may have to drop

  396. or hold back on

  397. some good things

  398. in order to make sure

  399. we don't miss

  400. the best thing.

  401. Our lives are so full

  402. of so much

  403. that sometimes

  404. we have to simplify things

  405. or it will explode.

  406. Right?

  407. You've been there.

  408. It's hard to keep Jesus

  409. at the center

  410. because living with myself

  411. at the center

  412. is more natural.

  413. It requires a lot less effort

  414. and a lot less intentionality.

  415. I'm used to it.

  416. I know how to live that way.

  417. But it's also hard

  418. for another reason

  419. I want to be honest about

  420. for a couple minutes.

  421. Jesus being first place

  422. in your life

  423. is both better

  424. and worse

  425. than the other things

  426. that take his place

  427. in first place.

  428. In other words

  429. it's not always better

  430. in terms of how our lives feel.

  431. That's a lie.

  432. That's not what the Bible says.

  433. It does not

  434. just make everything easy

  435. all the time.

  436. No.

  437. I wrestled with this

  438. this week.

  439. I wrestled with

  440. considering Jesus first

  441. multiple times

  442. even as I was preparing

  443. to preach about it.

  444. You think I could have

  445. had a good week?

  446. An easy week

  447. of Jesus being first.

  448. It's all I was studying about.

  449. And he brought a neighbor

  450. into my path

  451. who was inconvenient

  452. for me to love

  453. and didn't fit my schedule

  454. and I needed to sit

  455. and listen

  456. and I didn't have time

  457. I thought.

  458. I struggled with

  459. living with Jesus first

  460. when my car repair

  461. cost more than I expected.

  462. I hadn't planned

  463. to use the money that way.

  464. I had other plans for it.

  465. I struggled with it

  466. when I felt

  467. the decision Jesus

  468. wanted me to make

  469. as a parent

  470. was disappointing

  471. to my kids

  472. and I hate that feeling

  473. of disappointing them.

  474. If you consider

  475. Jesus first place

  476. in your friendships

  477. you may find yourself

  478. left out

  479. by a group

  480. you really care

  481. to be liked by

  482. because you're loving

  483. someone who is

  484. already lonely

  485. and left out

  486. the way Jesus

  487. would love them.

  488. It doesn't feel good.

  489. If you decide

  490. to consider

  491. Jesus first

  492. in your job

  493. it may at times

  494. mean that you don't

  495. make quite as much money

  496. or get to

  497. buy that car

  498. or that dress

  499. if you consider

  500. Jesus first

  501. in your free time

  502. you may decide

  503. he wouldn't have you

  504. doing something

  505. that you enjoy doing

  506. and you sacrifice

  507. that

  508. in order to live

  509. with him.

  510. You'll still have

  511. hard family arguments

  512. still get news

  513. of cancer

  514. you'll still make

  515. mistakes at work

  516. it does not

  517. magically

  518. fix everything

  519. okay

  520. but

  521. but

  522. having

  523. Jesus

  524. in first place

  525. planning your life

  526. around your

  527. relationship with him

  528. is better

  529. even when it

  530. seems or feels

  531. worse

  532. don't miss this

  533. as you spend

  534. more time

  535. with Jesus

  536. as his love

  537. for you

  538. transforms your life

  539. and your reality

  540. living with him

  541. first

  542. is best

  543. it is

  544. best

  545. because

  546. no matter who

  547. you're left out by

  548. you'll never be left

  549. alone by him

  550. or without community

  551. and his family

  552. you'll always have that

  553. because no matter

  554. what you can't afford

  555. your value

  556. is secure

  557. by the precious

  558. blood

  559. of Jesus Christ

  560. given for you

  561. because no matter

  562. what bad

  563. medical news

  564. you receive

  565. you're never

  566. without eternal

  567. hope

  568. and the promise

  569. of a resurrection

  570. body that will be

  571. given to you

  572. that will never

  573. break

  574. and will never

  575. hurt

  576. and will always

  577. last

  578. it's better

  579. even best

  580. to consider

  581. Jesus

  582. first

  583. because no matter

  584. how challenging

  585. your marriage is

  586. you will be

  587. tasting the love

  588. of a perfect

  589. spouse

  590. who loves you

  591. unfailingly

  592. and forever

  593. because no matter

  594. how badly

  595. you mess up

  596. at work

  597. or school

  598. you'll always

  599. have an identity

  600. that's established

  601. outside of anything

  602. you do

  603. or how well

  604. you perform

  605. you'll be

  606. safe

  607. and secure

  608. and valuable

  609. in Christ

  610. because no matter

  611. how many experiences

  612. you feel like

  613. you're missing out

  614. on in this life

  615. you'll never

  616. run out of time

  617. through eternity

  618. to explore

  619. every inch

  620. of God's

  621. glorious creation

  622. and enjoy life

  623. to the full

  624. with Him

  625. and with others

  626. you love

  627. forever

  628. see no matter

  629. whom you lose

  630. or what it costs you

  631. you'll have

  632. Jesus

  633. Himself

  634. the great King

  635. over all creation

  636. the powerful

  637. sustainer

  638. of the universe

  639. the supreme

  640. lover

  641. of your soul

  642. He

  643. will be

  644. yours

  645. always

  646. never

  647. ever

  648. letting you down

  649. Southwood

  650. I'm inviting

  651. you

  652. again

  653. I am

  654. urging

  655. you

  656. to join

  657. me

  658. in the

  659. journey

  660. of walking

  661. with Jesus

  662. learning

  663. together

  664. what it means

  665. in our lives

  666. to have Him

  667. in first place

  668. in

  669. everything

  670. that's why

  671. we're still here

  672. this morning

  673. I don't want

  674. anyone to miss

  675. this

  676. in case you're

  677. wondering

  678. this is a journey

  679. that will not end

  680. I'm committed

  681. to keeping it

  682. before us

  683. keeping us

  684. on this journey

  685. in fact

  686. as a church

  687. it is our first

  688. core commitment

  689. to being

  690. Christ

  691. centered

  692. by which we mean

  693. in every slice

  694. of life

  695. not just in our

  696. preaching

  697. or on Sundays

  698. but in our mission

  699. our shepherding

  700. our serving

  701. in all of life

  702. 24-7

  703. 365

  704. we must do

  705. this together

  706. we need one another

  707. for this

  708. right

  709. we as your leaders

  710. are especially

  711. trying to keep this

  712. before us right now

  713. because we know

  714. how vital it is

  715. and because we know

  716. how hard it is

  717. because we're living

  718. it with you

  719. it's a struggle

  720. for us

  721. too

  722. so especially

  723. be listening

  724. in the days

  725. and weeks

  726. ahead

  727. be talking

  728. together

  729. about how we

  730. consider Jesus

  731. first

  732. lots of ways

  733. to have this

  734. on your radar

  735. as we go back

  736. to the gospel

  737. of John

  738. week in

  739. and week out

  740. and watch

  741. and listen

  742. to Jesus

  743. hear his final

  744. passionate

  745. instructions to us

  746. what it looks like

  747. to live in relationship

  748. with him

  749. as we gather

  750. in grace groups

  751. to process together

  752. what we're learning

  753. and how this

  754. transforms our lives

  755. it's this first

  756. place

  757. Jesus

  758. that is

  759. what will be

  760. training our

  761. grace group

  762. leaders

  763. to help you

  764. walk in together

  765. as we gather

  766. with

  767. the parents

  768. of kids

  769. and youth

  770. and we're going

  771. to talk about

  772. the very same thing

  773. how we model

  774. Christ centered living

  775. and shape our kids

  776. toward Christ centered

  777. living together

  778. Jesus first

  779. in parenting

  780. in work

  781. in friendship

  782. in time

  783. in money

  784. in marriage

  785. there's a lot

  786. to talk about

  787. don't sit

  788. on the sidelines

  789. of this journey

  790. don't think

  791. Jesus is okay

  792. with the bronze medal

  793. hey he's a part

  794. of my life

  795. that's all he ever

  796. wanted

  797. don't think

  798. you're the gold medalist

  799. who will eventually

  800. sort your own life out

  801. it's just really busy

  802. right now

  803. but you'll eventually

  804. figure it out

  805. no

  806. no

  807. come back

  808. and be a part

  809. of this now

  810. Jesus

  811. first

  812. one last

  813. word of encouragement

  814. for us

  815. in this

  816. this is especially

  817. for those

  818. who are like me

  819. who feel convicted

  820. when you hear this

  821. maybe

  822. like me

  823. it's because

  824. you've heard this

  825. your whole life

  826. and you're

  827. you're kind of

  828. cynical about it

  829. at this point

  830. you're a little

  831. skeptical

  832. you're like

  833. yeah I mean

  834. I've believed that

  835. since I was a kid

  836. but I don't feel

  837. like it's ever

  838. kind of

  839. taken hold of me

  840. I don't feel like

  841. it's ever

  842. made the difference

  843. that it was

  844. supposed to

  845. and so I don't know

  846. what's going to be

  847. different this time

  848. I keep failing

  849. to live the way

  850. that I should

  851. that's actually

  852. a good thing

  853. to feel

  854. because there's

  855. there's hope

  856. right there

  857. first there's

  858. bad news

  859. you're likely

  860. to fail again

  861. probably this afternoon

  862. if I had to guess

  863. at considering

  864. Jesus first

  865. in everything

  866. in your life

  867. but there's

  868. really good news

  869. and I want this

  870. to inspire

  871. your heart

  872. in a new way

  873. and in fresh

  874. relationship

  875. with Jesus

  876. Jesus considered

  877. us first

  878. for all the times

  879. that we didn't

  880. consider him first

  881. all of them

  882. look at what

  883. follows this

  884. glorious

  885. Christ hymn

  886. it ends by saying

  887. Jesus' cross

  888. reconciles

  889. everything in the

  890. world to God

  891. and as for you

  892. you who were

  893. once alienated

  894. from God

  895. the Father

  896. who were

  897. hostile to him

  898. in your mind

  899. who were doing

  900. evil deeds

  901. even when you

  902. were doing

  903. the most evil

  904. deed possible

  905. what's that

  906. removing God

  907. from the center

  908. the throne

  909. of your heart

  910. and your life

  911. that's the first

  912. commandment

  913. right

  914. that we confessed

  915. earlier in the service

  916. we've failed

  917. to obey

  918. even then

  919. Jesus has

  920. reconciled you

  921. by his death

  922. so that he presents

  923. you holy

  924. and blameless

  925. and above reproach

  926. to his Father

  927. who has become

  928. now and forever

  929. your Father

  930. what amazing grace

  931. that Jesus

  932. would do that

  933. instead of his

  934. own comfort

  935. Jesus considered

  936. us first

  937. and what we

  938. would need

  939. and how much

  940. he means to us

  941. so that we now

  942. by his very

  943. spirit

  944. given to us

  945. can join in the

  946. journey

  947. the exciting

  948. costly

  949. hard

  950. fulfilling

  951. journey

  952. of considering

  953. him

  954. first place

  955. in

  956. everything

  957. what a gracious

  958. Savior

  959. let's ask for his

  960. help

  961. Jesus

  962. we

  963. renew

  964. even now

  965. our commitment

  966. to relationship

  967. with you

  968. before anything

  969. else

  970. oh Holy

  971. Spirit

  972. we ask

  973. for your

  974. help

  975. because our

  976. hearts

  977. are so

  978. prone

  979. to wander

  980. and even

  981. when

  982. when our

  983. hearts

  984. come to

  985. life

  986. and our

  987. spirits

  988. are willing

  989. you know

  990. our flesh

  991. is weak

  992. so help

  993. us

  994. we pray

  995. that we

  996. would not

  997. just give

  998. lip service

  999. to Jesus

  1000. that we

  1001. would not

  1002. just

  1003. grow his

  1004. slice of

  1005. the pie

  1006. but that we

  1007. would experience

  1008. what it means

  1009. that he would

  1010. be preeminent

  1011. in everything

  1012. for his glory

  1013. and for our

  1014. good we ask

  1015. it in his

  1016. name

  1017. amen
