  1. You are listening to a message from Southwood Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama.

  2. Our passion is to experience and express grace.

  3. Join us.

  4. We're continuing with our encounter with Jesus in the Gospel of John this morning.

  5. Jesus is in the upper room with his disciples the night before his death on the cross.

  6. And they are starting to process some pretty sobering realities.

  7. So much so that Jesus addresses their angst in this passage today by starting with saying to them,

  8. let not your hearts be troubled.

  9. Why were they troubled?

  10. Well, they've just learned that Jesus, the leader they love, won't be with them much longer.

  11. That he's about to die.

  12. He's just informed them that one of them will betray him.

  13. And then he's told them that another of them, a leader among his followers, will fail him as well.

  14. How are they going to go on?

  15. What's next?

  16. Is there any hope at all left for them?

  17. That's the context into which Jesus speaks, John 14, some of his most famous words.

  18. They are not just quotes to hang on your wall.

  19. They're not just for the sake of his Wikipedia page.

  20. They are words targeted for our hearts.

  21. I love that about Jesus.

  22. How Jesus saves some of his most glorious truths for some of our most desperate moments.

  23. Before I read them, I want to reflect with you briefly about how the hearts of the disciples in this room this morning

  24. may be similarly troubled to those this night we're about to read about.

  25. Y'all, there have been many different reasons just in this church family for us to feel troubled lately.

  26. Some of us have stood recently face to face with death at the bedside of a loved one.

  27. Others have reeled back with hearing difficult, life-altering health news.

  28. I've talked this week with parents.

  29. At their wits end, heavy hearts feeling like there's just no good path forward with this child they love.

  30. Someone else shared with me this week, he's just not sure there's value in what he's been pouring his life into for years.

  31. And what's it for?

  32. This job he spent so much time on just doesn't seem worth it to him.

  33. Many of us, day in and day out, find just the pace of daily life in this world overwhelming and beyond our control.

  34. Some of us, young and old, feel like we're missing out on life.

  35. We're alone.

  36. Everybody else is enjoying it.

  37. We're not.

  38. We're troubled about our uncertain relationship with God,

  39. even though we've been in church, around Jesus for a long time.

  40. We're troubled because the best among us seem to be failing Jesus.

  41. We're troubled because the group of people that we've followed Jesus with is not what we thought or hoped.

  42. Troubled by what's happening to myself, to my church, to my Jesus in the world.

  43. If you're troubled, if you're not troubled right now,

  44. I suspect your heart will sometime soon feel that unsettled, insecure, disrupted feeling.

  45. And Jesus has some of his most hopeful words for some of our most hopeless moments.

  46. Hear Jesus' words this morning as I read them.

  47. Listen closely right now because they will bring more comfort than any words I will say this morning.

  48. John 14, verse 1.

    John 14:1

  49. Let not your hearts be troubled.

  50. Believe in God.

  51. Believe also in me.

  52. In my Father's house are many rooms.

  53. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you?

  54. And if I go and prepare a place for you,

  55. I will come again and will take you to myself that where I am you may be also.

  56. And you know the way to where I am going.

  57. Thomas said to him,

  58. Lord, we do not know where you are going.

  59. How can we know the way?

  60. And Jesus said to him,

  61. I am the way and the truth and the life.

  62. No one comes to the Father except through me.

  63. If you had known me, you would have known the Father also.

  64. From now on you do know him and have seen him.

  65. Philip said to him,

  66. Lord, show us the Father and it is enough for us.

  67. Jesus said to him,

  68. Have I been with you so long and you still do not know me, Philip?

  69. Whoever has seen me has seen the Father.

  70. How can you say, show us the Father?

  71. Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me?

  72. The words that I say to you, I do not speak on my own authority,

  73. but the Father who dwells in me does his works.

  74. Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me.

  75. Or else believe on account of the works themselves.

  76. Truly, truly, I say to you,

  77. whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do.

  78. And greater works than these he will do,

  79. because I am going to the Father.

  80. Whatever you ask in my name,

  81. this I will do,

  82. that the Father may be glorified in the Son,

  83. if you ask me anything in my name.

  84. I will do it.

  85. Let's pray together.

  86. Jesus, in your name,

  87. we ask you to comfort our troubled hearts

  88. with your hope,

  89. by the power of your Spirit,

  90. for the glory of your name.

  91. But please, Jesus, now,

  92. would you speak to us?

  93. Amen.

  94. Many of us can remember a time

  95. when we walked into a locker room at halftime

  96. with our heads down,

  97. beaten down.

  98. We're way behind.

  99. We messed up early in the game.

  100. Our star player is out for the rest of the game.

  101. There's really no hope for the second half.

  102. And the coach has to step up

  103. to send us back out for the second half.

  104. And he says something like this.

  105. All right, you guys, you got this.

  106. You can do it.

  107. Keep fighting.

  108. Don't give up.

  109. Dig deep.

  110. Believe in yourselves.

  111. That's the message, right?

  112. You've heard it in a number of different ways.

  113. I'm not against a good pep talk, by the way,

  114. to encourage or motivate a team.

  115. But notice the contrast with Jesus' words

  116. to his troubled disciples.

  117. He's sending them back out.

  118. Where will they find comfort and hope?

  119. Is it in digging deep inside themselves?

  120. Believing in themselves?

  121. Believe in God.

  122. Believe also in me.

  123. This is so important.

  124. The hope Jesus offers his troubled disciples

  125. throughout this conversation

  126. comes from outside ourselves.

  127. It's actually so hopeful, so encouraging.

  128. We need to place our faith in someone else.

  129. And he tells us to trust him.

  130. Jesus offers himself as our hope

  131. whenever we are troubled.

  132. Christian, hear that message clearly this morning.

  133. Lest you go back out into the world

  134. that he sends you to in your own strength.

  135. It's not how he sends you.

  136. And if you have never believed in Jesus,

  137. never trusted yourself to him,

  138. never decided that he is the source

  139. of the life that you are longing for,

  140. I'm so glad that you are here this morning.

  141. I would invite you to listen to what Jesus offers

  142. to those who do believe in him.

  143. Whether you're convinced right now

  144. that he can come through on what he offers or not,

  145. consider the comfort,

  146. the hope that Jesus promises to provide

  147. differently from anyone else.

  148. Trust me, Jesus says.

  149. And now the comfort that he offers begins.

  150. It is all in him.

  151. Verse two,

  152. in my father's house are many rooms.

  153. If it were not so,

  154. would I have told you

  155. that I go to prepare a place for you.

  156. Jesus is about to go away from them, right?

  157. But he is going to prepare a place for them.

  158. It's a dwelling, a home,

  159. with the idea of these words

  160. focusing not so much on the size

  161. as on the security,

  162. the certainty of the home.

  163. There's a place for you,

  164. a place where you belong,

  165. a home.

  166. When the storms of life

  167. have you confused and overwhelmed,

  168. there's no place like home.

  169. There's no place like home

  170. where you're accepted, right?

  171. Where you're at rest.

  172. Where's home for us?

  173. Paul will later say

  174. our citizenship is in heaven.

  175. That's home.

  176. With God in his house,

  177. a city, a heavenly home

  178. that he's made for us

  179. and made us for.

  180. Are you troubled by life

  181. not working out

  182. the way that you'd hoped?

  183. Feeling unfulfilled

  184. here in this world?

  185. Troubled perhaps

  186. by the end of your time here

  187. or someone else's time

  188. here in this world

  189. coming quickly?

  190. Jesus sets our hope,

  191. not here,

  192. but on a true home

  193. that is beyond this world.

  194. C.S. Lewis says

  195. this is why God

  196. gives us here

  197. only glimpses

  198. of true happiness,

  199. never enough

  200. to fully satisfy us.

  201. It's because he made us

  202. for another world,

  203. for another home

  204. where we'll more deeply

  205. feel that.

  206. Lewis writes

  207. in The Problem of Pain,

  208. the security that we crave

  209. would teach us

  210. to rest our hearts

  211. in this world

  212. and so it would pose

  213. an obstacle

  214. to our return to God.

  215. But a few moments

  216. of happy love,

  217. a landscape,

  218. a symphony,

  219. a merry meeting

  220. with friends,

  221. a bath

  222. or a football match

  223. have no such tendency.

  224. Our Father refreshes us

  225. on the journey

  226. with some pleasant ends

  227. but will not encourage us

  228. to mistake them

  229. for home.

  230. Let not your heart

  231. be troubled.

  232. Jesus is preparing

  233. a home for you.

  234. And then he clarifies

  235. the most important thing

  236. about our true home.

  237. It's one thing.

  238. It's that that home

  239. is with Jesus.

  240. Verse 3,

  241. if I go and prepare

  242. a place for you,

  243. I will come again

  244. and will take you

  245. to myself

  246. that where I am

  247. you may be also.

  248. I will take you where?

  249. To myself.

  250. That where I am

  251. you may be also.

  252. This, beloved,

  253. is heaven

  254. to be

  255. with

  256. Jesus.

  257. How does the Apostle Paul

  258. encourage us with hope

  259. in the end times?

  260. He says,

  261. and so

  262. we will be

  263. always

  264. with

  265. the Lord.

  266. Home,

  267. friends,

  268. is where

  269. Jesus is.

  270. In fact,

  271. 1 John 3

  272. tells us

  273. we'll be

  274. like Jesus

  275. because we will

  276. finally see him

  277. as he is

  278. face to face

  279. completely remade

  280. in his image.

  281. Jesus doesn't

  282. get into a lot

  283. of details

  284. about heaven here,

  285. does he?

  286. How gold

  287. are the streets,

  288. Jesus?

  289. I mean,

  290. how big

  291. is my house

  292. after all?

  293. What will I spend

  294. all of my time

  295. doing?

  296. Listen,

  297. he doesn't get into it

  298. because none of that

  299. comforts

  300. like the fact

  301. that you will be

  302. in the Father's house

  303. with Jesus,

  304. his Son.

  305. You know this.

  306. You know that's

  307. the most important thing.

  308. What is by far

  309. the most important

  310. thing about a honeymoon?

  311. Is it the particular

  312. details of the place

  313. that you stay?

  314. Is it the excellence

  315. of the food?

  316. Is it the quality

  317. of the service?

  318. No way!

  319. It is the presence

  320. of your beloved,

  321. right?

  322. That's what makes

  323. it a honeymoon.

  324. Jesus says,

  325. I've got a home

  326. for you.

  327. Not just a week,

  328. but an eternity.

  329. And I'll be there

  330. with you.

  331. So you can rest

  332. today

  333. instead of

  334. trying to make

  335. life in this world

  336. a perfect

  337. and satisfying home

  338. that gives you

  339. everything you've ever

  340. longed for.

  341. In fact,

  342. even those of you

  343. who fail me here

  344. miserably,

  345. you're coming home

  346. with me.

  347. Look,

  348. this is

  349. amazing grace

  350. beyond what you

  351. might be realizing

  352. if you're just

  353. thinking about heaven

  354. and the home

  355. right now.

  356. Stop and listen

  357. to Jesus here.

  358. Jesus is preparing

  359. a place for you,

  360. right?

  361. He's doing all

  362. of that work

  363. and then he's not

  364. waiting for you

  365. to find your way

  366. to get there

  367. to this wonderful

  368. place.

  369. He's actually

  370. coming back

  371. to get you.

  372. What comfort!

  373. Don't miss that

  374. because Thomas

  375. is about to miss

  376. that, okay?

  377. Let not your

  378. heart be troubled.

  379. Your true home

  380. is with

  381. Jesus.

  382. Thomas is too

  383. practical here,

  384. too down to earth,

  385. although I'm so

  386. thankful he is.

  387. Gets us a really

  388. beautiful interaction.

  389. And I find the

  390. same thing in me.

  391. When my heart

  392. is troubled,

  393. I often find that

  394. I grasp for

  395. something secure,

  396. some very

  397. practical security,

  398. something I can

  399. hold on to

  400. even if I know

  401. it won't really

  402. last.

  403. Look at verse 4.

  404. Jesus says,

  405. you know the way

  406. to where I'm going.

  407. And Thomas said

  408. to him,

  409. Lord, we don't

  410. know where you're

  411. going.

  412. How can we know

  413. the way?

  414. Do you hear him?

  415. Can you feel

  416. the anxiety

  417. in his voice?

  418. Cut the fluff,

  419. Jesus.

  420. You're leaving us.

  421. How are we going

  422. to be okay on our

  423. own?

  424. You've got to give

  425. us something more.

  426. how can they

  427. know the way

  428. to be with him?

  429. Jesus said to him,

  430. I am the way

  431. and the truth

  432. and the life.

  433. No one comes

  434. to the Father

  435. except through me.

  436. There's an exclusive

  437. claim here in this

  438. verse and that might

  439. be hanging some of us

  440. up.

  441. We're going to come

  442. back to that in just

  443. a second, okay?

  444. But what's Jesus

  445. primarily saying here

  446. when he makes the

  447. statement about who

  448. he is?

  449. He is comforting

  450. his disciples by

  451. telling them that he

  452. is all they need,

  453. that he is the

  454. sufficient way to

  455. the Father to get

  456. home.

  457. They need only to

  458. know him, to trust

  459. him, to live in

  460. relationship with

  461. him.

  462. Not some complex

  463. set of directions,

  464. this is not like the

  465. Mission Impossible

  466. movie where if

  467. you're going to

  468. find the treasure

  469. you have to get

  470. through a retina

  471. scan and then

  472. crawl through the

  473. air vents and

  474. dodge security

  475. cameras and jump

  476. through laser beams

  477. and balance on one

  478. tiptoe and crack the

  479. safe all the same

  480. time just to get to

  481. the treasure.

  482. That's not what

  483. Jesus is saying.

  484. He says, no, you

  485. trust me.

  486. I do the work.

  487. I come back to

  488. rescue you.

  489. I bring you all the

  490. way home.

  491. Y'all, that's grace.

  492. That's Jesus.

  493. That's how he works.

  494. I am, he says.

  495. Yet again in John, a

  496. pointer to his true

  497. divine identity.

  498. Remember the bread of

  499. life, the light of the

  500. world, the door, the

  501. good shepherd, the

  502. resurrection and the

  503. life and now I am the

  504. way, the truth and the

  505. life.

  506. We just need to know

  507. him because he's not

  508. merely the way to the

  509. father but the truth

  510. and life himself.

  511. Just as we said, not

  512. merely the way home, the

  513. way to that place but he

  514. is the destination, the

  515. rest, the highlight of

  516. the home himself.

  517. Thomas Akempis famously

  518. paraphrased Jesus here in

  519. the 15th century.

  520. Without the way, there is

  521. no going.

  522. Without the truth, there

  523. is no knowing.

  524. Without the life, there is

  525. no living.

  526. I am the way which you

  527. must follow, the truth

  528. which you must believe, the

  529. life for which you must

  530. hope.

  531. I am the inviolable way, the

  532. infallible truth, the

  533. unending life.

  534. I am the way that is

  535. straight, the supreme

  536. truth, the life that is

  537. true, the blessed, the

  538. uncreated life.

  539. That's the main thing Jesus

  540. is communicating.

  541. That he is the sufficient

  542. way.

  543. But it's true, and I want

  544. to slow down here because

  545. this throws most people

  546. these days.

  547. He is the only way.

  548. That's quite clear in the

  549. Greek.

  550. The way, the truth, the

  551. life.

  552. In fact, Jesus clarifies

  553. that no one comes to the

  554. Father except through him.

  555. Despite what you hear these

  556. days, even in many

  557. churches, this is consistent

  558. with Jesus' claims elsewhere

  559. in John, the teaching of

  560. Scripture as a whole.

  561. salvation is found in no

  562. one else, for there is no

  563. other name under heaven

  564. given to men by which we

  565. must be saved.

  566. Acts 4.12.

  567. Now, there are books and

  568. blogs all over the place

  569. about this and what it

  570. means and how it impacts

  571. us.

  572. Let me just say two things

  573. this morning.

  574. The first one, primarily for

  575. those of you here

  576. investigating Jesus,

  577. when something is personal,

  578. it's always exclusive.

  579. In other words, when it's

  580. about relationship, there's

  581. only one way.

  582. There's only one me and one

  583. you.

  584. You can't pick someone else

  585. and spend time with him,

  586. getting to know him, and

  587. then claim through that to

  588. have a relationship with me.

  589. It's not the nature of

  590. relationship.

  591. And Christianity teaches

  592. that what we need, in fact,

  593. what we long for, because

  594. it's what we were made for,

  595. is relationship with God

  596. himself.

  597. And so, Jesus, as we'll see

  598. more here, is connecting us

  599. to that uniquely.

  600. Christianity is not like many

  601. religions, an experience,

  602. or primarily a philosophy,

  603. or an achievement,

  604. something you do.

  605. The God of the Bible

  606. is a unique person

  607. in relationship with whom

  608. we actually get to know him,

  609. and we experience true love.

  610. We trust his justice.

  611. We rejoice in his presence.

  612. So to say that there's a

  613. person who exclusively

  614. is the way to God

  615. is wonderfully personal

  616. and completely normal.

  617. Especially wonderful

  618. if he's bringing God

  619. to us, right?

  620. What we should be concerned

  621. about when we talk about

  622. being exclusive,

  623. this is the second thing

  624. I especially want those

  625. who trust Jesus already

  626. to be listening to,

  627. who is excluded

  628. by Jesus' exclusivity?

  629. We rightly should be careful.

  630. Typically, when we think

  631. of people being excluded,

  632. it is those who don't

  633. measure up,

  634. who can't reach the bar,

  635. who don't offer

  636. what's needed.

  637. Exclusivity almost always

  638. means that those

  639. who are good enough

  640. are in,

  641. and those who are too bad

  642. are out, right?

  643. The good news of Jesus

  644. is the most inclusive

  645. exclusivity ever.

  646. Listen, this grace

  647. we've been talking about

  648. here this morning,

  649. Jesus prepares the place,

  650. he pays the penalty,

  651. he comes and brings us

  652. home to himself.

  653. What does that mean?

  654. It means the weak,

  655. the poor,

  656. the bad,

  657. the humble

  658. are in.

  659. They're in

  660. with Jesus.

  661. The ones excluded

  662. are those who proudly

  663. insist on their own way,

  664. who reject a God

  665. who's greater than they are,

  666. who refuse the path

  667. of grace.

  668. Friends, that probably means

  669. there is way more grace

  670. than we can comprehend

  671. for mistakes

  672. and misunderstandings

  673. and missed opportunities.

  674. So we Christians

  675. should be the last people

  676. who are looking down

  677. on anyone else

  678. who disagrees with us.

  679. It should be

  680. that we're looking out

  681. for them.

  682. We are the bad,

  683. the left out,

  684. the weak,

  685. and Jesus has brought us in.

  686. Amen?

  687. It's the only way

  688. you get there.

  689. He is the way,

  690. not you being good enough.

  691. Jesus is the way

  692. and he loves

  693. bringing people home.

  694. you struggling

  695. with your performance

  696. these days?

  697. Are you hurt

  698. by your church's

  699. failures?

  700. Are you thinking

  701. you've lost your way

  702. in life?

  703. Let not your heart

  704. be troubled.

  705. Jesus

  706. is all you need

  707. to get home.

  708. Two more bits

  709. of comfort

  710. more briefly.

  711. Jesus continues

  712. in verse 7.

  713. If you had known me

  714. you would have known

  715. my father also.

  716. From now on

  717. you do know him

  718. and have seen him.

  719. Philip said to him,

  720. Lord show us the father

  721. and it is enough

  722. for us.

  723. And Jesus then

  724. asks a really

  725. sobering question.

  726. Especially if you've

  727. been in a church

  728. a long time

  729. but you don't feel

  730. close to Jesus.

  731. Jesus said to him,

  732. Have I been with you

  733. so long

  734. and you still

  735. do not

  736. know me?

  737. Have I been with you

  738. so long

  739. and you still

  740. don't

  741. know

  742. me?

  743. See,

  744. whoever has seen me

  745. has seen the father.

  746. How can you say

  747. show us the father?

  748. Do you not believe

  749. that I'm in the father

  750. and the father

  751. is in me?

  752. The words that I say

  753. to you,

  754. I don't speak them

  755. on my own authority.

  756. You know this,

  757. Philip.

  758. The father who dwells

  759. in me does his works.

  760. Believe me

  761. that I am in the father

  762. and the father

  763. is in me.

  764. Have you gotten

  765. the message yet?

  766. Or else believe

  767. on account

  768. of the works

  769. themselves.

  770. Remember that

  771. personal knowing

  772. that I said

  773. Christianity

  774. is all about?

  775. That's what Jesus

  776. is saying here.

  777. It's not

  778. information about.

  779. Information about

  780. someone is not

  781. exclusive.

  782. You can read

  783. about someone.

  784. You can know

  785. a lot of information.

  786. Jesus wants you

  787. personally

  788. to know

  789. God,

  790. your father.

  791. Jesus is telling

  792. his friends

  793. that when they

  794. know him,

  795. they know

  796. the father.

  797. Wow!

  798. See,

  799. in this culture

  800. that would have

  801. been unthinkable.

  802. God was

  803. the unknowable.

  804. Yahweh

  805. was high

  806. and exalted

  807. and above them

  808. and so Philip

  809. is understandably

  810. still worried

  811. that Jesus

  812. is about to leave

  813. and God

  814. is still out

  815. there unknown.

  816. Perhaps he's

  817. out to get them.

  818. Likely at this point

  819. he's disappointed

  820. in them, right?

  821. And Jesus

  822. was this messianic

  823. figure that

  824. they hoped

  825. would lead them

  826. to God

  827. and so Jesus

  828. says don't be

  829. confused.

  830. Don't be

  831. troubled by this.

  832. I am

  833. who God

  834. really is.

  835. Jesus

  836. came

  837. to reveal

  838. the father

  839. perfectly

  840. and personally

  841. to us.

  842. You want to know

  843. what God's like?

  844. He stoops

  845. to wash

  846. the feet

  847. of those

  848. beneath him.

  849. He weeps

  850. in the face

  851. of death

  852. at the tomb

  853. of a loved one.

  854. He feeds

  855. 5,000 plus people

  856. like that

  857. with no effort.

  858. He heals

  859. the sick,

  860. raises the dead,

  861. challenges

  862. the proud.

  863. In fact,

  864. he chases

  865. religious

  866. profiteers

  867. out of his

  868. house,

  869. drives them

  870. away.

  871. It disgusts

  872. him when

  873. people use

  874. his name

  875. and his

  876. church

  877. to hurt

  878. others

  879. and to

  880. point them

  881. away from

  882. him.

  883. Just wait

  884. till you see

  885. if that's

  886. what he's

  887. like towards

  888. religious

  889. people.

  890. What do

  891. you think

  892. he's going

  893. to do

  894. when he

  895. finds a

  896. sinful

  897. woman

  898. at the

  899. well?

  900. Well,

  901. he patiently

  902. and lovingly

  903. and against

  904. all expectations

  905. engages with

  906. her.

  907. He in

  908. fact brings

  909. hope to

  910. her life

  911. and through

  912. her to

  913. her whole

  914. community.

  915. Will God

  916. really be

  917. that way

  918. with me?

  919. Will it be

  920. like that for

  921. me?

  922. even though

  923. I've known

  924. about him

  925. for so

  926. long?

  927. Will he

  928. still be

  929. that way

  930. with me?

  931. Is there

  932. justice for

  933. my suffering?

  934. Is there

  935. grace for

  936. my sin?

  937. Yes.

  938. Most

  939. assuredly,

  940. yes,

  941. there is.

  942. Let not

  943. your heart

  944. be troubled.

  945. God is

  946. really like

  947. what you've

  948. seen in

  949. Jesus.

  950. Such

  951. good news.

  952. We're

  953. going to

  954. see more

  955. of these

  956. next hopeful

  957. words next

  958. week.

  959. But they're

  960. words of

  961. comfort and

  962. hope too.

  963. How will

  964. we accomplish

  965. anything with

  966. you gone,

  967. Jesus?

  968. You know

  969. they're asking

  970. that.

  971. You're the

  972. miracle worker.

  973. You're the

  974. wise teacher.

  975. You're the

  976. winner of

  977. followers.

  978. Verse 12,

  979. truly,

  980. truly,

  981. I say to

  982. you,

  983. whoever

  984. believes in

  985. me will

  986. also do

  987. the works

  988. that I

  989. do.

  990. And

  991. greater

  992. works than

  993. these will

  994. he do

  995. because I

  996. am going

  997. to the

  998. Father.

  999. In fact,

  1000. whatever you

  1001. ask in

  1002. my name,

  1003. this I

  1004. will do,

  1005. that the

  1006. Father may

  1007. be glorified

  1008. in the

  1009. Son.

  1010. If you

  1011. ask me

  1012. anything in

  1013. my name,

  1014. I will

  1015. do it.

  1016. Believe in

  1017. me.

  1018. Right?

  1019. Right where we

  1020. started.

  1021. Jesus offers

  1022. himself as

  1023. our hope.

  1024. He's leaving,

  1025. but he's

  1026. not leaving

  1027. us alone.

  1028. He's going

  1029. to keep

  1030. working in

  1031. us to

  1032. live like

  1033. him,

  1034. to do

  1035. even

  1036. greater

  1037. things in

  1038. the sense

  1039. of the

  1040. timing of

  1041. Jesus'

  1042. kingdom.

  1043. After his

  1044. death and

  1045. resurrection,

  1046. the full

  1047. gospel will

  1048. be proclaimed

  1049. clearly and

  1050. personally.

  1051. More people

  1052. will be brought

  1053. into his

  1054. kingdom.

  1055. God's glory

  1056. will come

  1057. and be seen

  1058. in fresh

  1059. ways.

  1060. And when

  1061. you start

  1062. asking,

  1063. by the

  1064. power of

  1065. Jesus,

  1066. not your

  1067. own,

  1068. for the

  1069. glory of

  1070. Jesus,

  1071. not your

  1072. own,

  1073. he will

  1074. delight to

  1075. hear and

  1076. answer your

  1077. prayers.

  1078. You can talk

  1079. with him like

  1080. he's still

  1081. right there

  1082. with you.

  1083. Now these

  1084. last verses

  1085. can be abused

  1086. in both

  1087. directions.

  1088. I'm aware

  1089. of that.

  1090. No, he's

  1091. not saying

  1092. name it and

  1093. claim it,

  1094. whatever car

  1095. you want,

  1096. just it'll

  1097. show up in

  1098. your driveway

  1099. this afternoon.

  1100. But I

  1101. want to warn

  1102. us Presbyterians

  1103. more on the

  1104. other side,

  1105. okay?

  1106. Don't

  1107. underestimate

  1108. the power

  1109. of prayer

  1110. because it

  1111. connects to

  1112. the power

  1113. of Jesus

  1114. who is

  1115. alive like

  1116. he's right

  1117. here with

  1118. you.

  1119. You long

  1120. to see

  1121. Jesus glorified

  1122. in the life

  1123. of your

  1124. child,

  1125. your neighbor,

  1126. yourself,

  1127. in an area

  1128. that seems

  1129. to you

  1130. impossible.

  1131. How could

  1132. the light

  1133. of Jesus

  1134. shine there?

  1135. Ask him.

  1136. Keep asking.

  1137. He's telling

  1138. you that he

  1139. may not be

  1140. here performing

  1141. miracles bodily

  1142. anymore,

  1143. but the miraculous

  1144. things beyond

  1145. what any of us

  1146. asks or imagines,

  1147. they haven't

  1148. stopped and

  1149. they won't

  1150. stop.

  1151. And I don't

  1152. know if you're

  1153. starting to feel

  1154. uncomfortable because

  1155. I am just a little

  1156. bit, but I'm

  1157. preaching the text

  1158. and this is

  1159. what Jesus

  1160. says will

  1161. happen.

  1162. So he's

  1163. talking to

  1164. Peter, listen

  1165. Peter, you're

  1166. the one who

  1167. saw my glory

  1168. and my

  1169. transfiguration.

  1170. You're the

  1171. one who

  1172. watched Lazarus

  1173. walk out of

  1174. a grave.

  1175. You, Peter,

  1176. have seen the

  1177. Samaritan woman

  1178. come to faith

  1179. and the Jewish

  1180. Messiah and I'm

  1181. telling you that

  1182. even though all

  1183. those things have

  1184. happened, your

  1185. best days with

  1186. me are still to

  1187. come.

  1188. Greater things

  1189. yet will happen,

  1190. Jesus says.

  1191. Just ask.

  1192. You know why?

  1193. Because you're

  1194. not on your

  1195. own.

  1196. There are

  1197. greater things

  1198. with Jesus.

  1199. Holy Spirit

  1200. next week, so

  1201. good.

  1202. Jesus will never

  1203. leave you and

  1204. in his economy

  1205. the best things

  1206. are always yet

  1207. to come.

  1208. Let not your

  1209. heart be

  1210. troubled.

  1211. Your best days

  1212. with Jesus are

  1213. still ahead.

  1214. So much comfort

  1215. for us in one

  1216. passage.

  1217. right where we

  1218. most need it.

  1219. Right?

  1220. He speaks words

  1221. like this.

  1222. I'm not supposed

1223. to but I have to

  1224. show you one last

  1225. thing.

  1226. When Jesus says

  1227. let not your

  1228. hearts be

  1229. troubled,

  1230. he's not

  1231. saying shut

  1232. up and quit

  1233. whining.

  1234. Your troubles

  1235. are no big

  1236. deal.

  1237. He knows there

  1238. are real reasons

  1239. in this world

  1240. to get

  1241. troubled,

  1242. to be

  1243. unsettled,

  1244. even upset.

  1245. I know that

  1246. because we're

  1247. told that during

  1248. this very

  1249. conversation,

  1250. just a few

  1251. verses earlier,

  1252. Jesus himself

  1253. is troubled,

  1254. same word,

  1255. in his

  1256. spirit.

  1257. As he

  1258. contemplates

  1259. his betrayal

  1260. and his

  1261. approaching

  1262. death.

  1263. So what does

  1264. Jesus do

  1265. when his

  1266. heart is

  1267. troubled?

  1268. Hey, take

  1269. your own

  1270. advice, man.

  1271. Let not

  1272. your heart

  1273. be troubled.

  1274. What does

  1275. Jesus do?

  1276. Jesus

  1277. stays

  1278. troubled

  1279. so that

  1280. we don't

  1281. have to.

  1282. Jesus

  1283. troubles

  1284. himself

  1285. for our

  1286. comfort.

  1287. Jesus

  1288. goes to

  1289. an agonizing

  1290. death

  1291. willingly

  1292. as the

  1293. way to

  1294. prepare a

  1295. home for

  1296. us,

  1297. to bring

  1298. us to

  1299. that home

  1300. with him,

  1301. to love

  1302. you like

  1303. God so

  1304. that you

  1305. always have

  1306. hope of

  1307. brighter days

  1308. with Jesus.

  1309. He faces

  1310. the trouble

  1311. head on

  1312. to spare

  1313. us from

  1314. it so

  1315. that our

  1316. troubled hearts

  1317. today don't

  1318. have to

  1319. stay troubled.

  1320. There's

  1321. comfort for

  1322. us today

  1323. only

  1324. because there

  1325. was no

  1326. comfort for

  1327. him on

  1328. the cross.

  1329. He died

  1330. to give

  1331. us these

  1332. glorious

  1333. promises of

  1334. life.

  1335. Do you see

  1336. his love

  1337. for you?

  1338. That's the

  1339. message of

  1340. the Lord's

  1341. Supper.

  1342. It was

  1343. this very

  1344. night where

  1345. he's saying

  1346. these things

  1347. where he

  1348. would be

  1349. betrayed.

  1350. That the

  1351. Lord Jesus

  1352. took bread

  1353. and he

  1354. broke it

  1355. and he

  1356. gave it

  1357. to his

  1358. disciples

  1359. as I'm

  1360. ministering

  1361. in his

  1362. name.

  1363. Give this

  1364. bread to

  1365. you.

  1366. And he

  1367. said,

  1368. take,

  1369. eat.

  1370. This is

  1371. my body

  1372. broken for

  1373. you.

  1374. Do this

  1375. in remembrance

  1376. of me.

  1377. And in the

  1378. same way

  1379. after supper

  1380. he took

  1381. the cup

  1382. and said,

  1383. this cup

  1384. is the new

  1385. covenant in

  1386. my blood

  1387. shed for

  1388. many for

  1389. the forgiveness

  1390. of sins.

  1391. Drink from

  1392. it all

  1393. of you.

  1394. For as

  1395. often as

  1396. you eat

  1397. this bread

  1398. and drink

  1399. this cup

  1400. you proclaim

  1401. the Lord's

  1402. death

  1403. until he

  1404. comes.

  1405. This is

  1406. Jesus'

  1407. table.

  1408. It's not

  1409. the table

  1410. of Southwood

  1411. or the

  1412. Presbyterian

  1413. church.

  1414. So child

  1415. of God

  1416. let not

  1417. your heart

  1418. be troubled.

  1419. His body

  1420. given

  1421. for you.

  1422. His blood

  1423. shed

  1424. for you.

  1425. Your home

  1426. purchased

  1427. and prepared

  1428. for you

  1429. to be with

  1430. him today.

  1431. Come and

  1432. taste it.

  1433. To be with

  1434. him forever.

  1435. Long for that.

  1436. Look forward

  1437. to that.

  1438. Come

  1439. and eat.

  1440. If you

  1441. don't

  1442. know Jesus

  1443. like that,

  1444. if you

  1445. have not

  1446. personally

  1447. embraced

  1448. him as

  1449. the way

  1450. into

  1451. relationship

  1452. with God,

  1453. the truth

  1454. and the

  1455. life that

  1456. you long

  1457. for,

  1458. then don't

  1459. come take

  1460. these elements

  1461. today.

  1462. But I

  1463. would plead

  1464. with you

  1465. instead,

  1466. take

  1467. Jesus

  1468. today as

  1469. he offers

  1470. himself

  1471. to you.

  1472. Believe

  1473. in him

  1474. as the

  1475. hope

  1476. for your

  1477. troubled

  1478. heart.

  1479. It's

  1480. trouble

  1481. that can't

  1482. be fully

  1483. handled,

  1484. fully

  1485. satisfied.

  1486. any

  1487. other

  1488. way.

  1489. And

  1490. Jesus

  1491. offers

  1492. himself

  1493. to

  1494. you

  1495. now

  1496. and

  1497. forever.

  1498. Come

  1499. let us

  1500. pray with

  1501. you during

  1502. the Lord's

  1503. Supper.

  1504. We'd

  1505. love to

  1506. talk with

  1507. you more

  1508. after.

  1509. But come

  1510. to Jesus.

  1511. Let's pray

  1512. and we'll

  1513. celebrate

  1514. together.

  1515. Jesus,

  1516. every one

  1517. of us

  1518. desperately

  1519. needs you

  1520. to come

  1521. to us.

  1522. By your

  1523. Holy Spirit

  1524. meet with

  1525. us now

  1526. so that

  1527. very normal

  1528. bread and

  1529. wine

  1530. minister to

  1531. our hearts

  1532. in a very

  1533. holy

  1534. and powerful

  1535. way

  1536. that you

  1537. would do

  1538. work here

  1539. today that

  1540. we couldn't

  1541. make happen

  1542. on our

  1543. own

  1544. because you're

  1545. present

  1546. and you're

  1547. giving us

  1548. your grace

  1549. again.

  1550. Do your

  1551. work

  1552. for your

  1553. glory and

  1554. our good.

  1555. We ask

  1556. in your

  1557. name.

  1558. Amen.
