  1. You are listening to a message from Southwood Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama.

  2. Our passion is to experience and express grace.

  3. Join us.

  4. Thanks, DJ, for helping to lead us before God's throne.

  5. I want to stay there this morning.

  6. We're going to get back in just a little bit to our study of John's gospel.

  7. Lord willing, we will finish this spring.

  8. I know some of you don't believe that, but we will.

  9. But today, I wanted to get back to basics.

  10. At the beginning of a new year, I want us to talk a little bit about why we are here.

  11. What's our why, so to speak?

  12. What motivates and drives us personally and as a church together?

  13. What's your why?

  14. Some of you, especially business people, like to ask that question a lot.

  15. What the question's about is, what's your purpose?

  16. What gets you out of bed in the morning?

  17. What gets you through the afternoon when you're starting to get weary?

  18. For many of us, at its core, our answer to that question is basically to be happy.

  19. Whether that means being comfortable, you know, making enough money to retire early and do whatever I want.

  20. Or, you know, being respected.

  21. Having others recognize me.

  22. Having my parents see me as successful and made something of myself.

  23. Maybe it's making a difference or an impact in the world.

  24. Giving my kids a better life than I had.

  25. Or seeing justice advanced in my community.

  26. And many of those are very noble goals as far as they go.

  27. But if at the end of the day my why is really about myself.

  28. About my being fulfilled.

  29. My being happy.

  30. The Bible says it actually has a higher purpose for us.

  31. A grander mission if we're willing to accept it.

  32. It's the why without which we will never be fulfilled.

  33. We've articulated the mission here at Southwood as to experience and express grace.

  34. In relationships that impact eternity.

  35. You've heard me say before that that's a big statement.

  36. And it's synonymous with other things like knowing God and making Him known.

  37. Like tasting God's love and sharing God's love.

  38. As Libby said, like loving God and loving neighbor.

  39. It's why we exist.

  40. And notice that in all of those things, no matter what words we use to say it, it's all about who?

  41. God.

  42. All of them.

  43. My purpose begins with Him.

  44. Grace.

  45. Jesus.

  46. That comes from God.

  47. That is Him.

  48. It's the same idea saying the main thing is about my relationship with God.

  49. Out of which flow my relationships with other people.

  50. An eternal impact.

  51. Because He's eternal.

  52. It's what our every breath should be about as we breathe in God's grace.

  53. And then, moment by moment, breathing out God's grace over and over.

  54. And I want you to remember this morning that that's not merely for Southwood as a church.

  55. Because it's easy to think that and think, well, when I show up in this building, I'll be about that.

  56. Okay?

  57. Today?

  58. No.

  59. It's for each of us individually, too.

  60. That's our why.

  61. Life with God.

  62. And today, I want us to see that primary purpose that you may already think about through a fresh lens.

  63. I want to play word association with you this morning, which I know is risky, like asking a question during a children's moment.

  64. You know, you don't know what you're going to get.

  65. But word association means I'm going to say a word.

  66. And some of you are going to need to talk.

  67. And say the first thing that comes to mind.

  68. We don't do this often.

  69. So, if you're visiting, we're trying something new.

  70. Okay?

  71. The word for this morning is holy.

  72. Whoa.

  73. Okay.

  74. Now you're going to have to slow down.

  75. It was too many at once.

  76. Holy.

  77. Set apart.

  78. God's.

  79. Weak.

  80. Weighty.

  81. Thank you.

  82. Better than weak, I think.

  83. Other things?

  84. Yeah.

  85. Halo.

  86. Yeah.

  87. So, a lot of times we think of holy and we think of something churchy, right?

  88. And super spiritual with a halo.

  89. And I understand that.

  90. You may think about a lot of things when that word is thrown out there.

  91. What if I said to you this morning, you are holy?

  92. You don't have to respond.

  93. But how would you feel if I said that to you?

  94. I've tried this on a few people.

  95. And so, I know some of the answers.

  96. Would you be too ashamed to agree?

  97. Apparently, pastor, you don't know how I talk.

  98. You don't know what I've done.

  99. Whatever it is that you'd fill in that blank.

  100. I'm not super spiritual.

  101. What are you talking about?

  102. Would you be embarrassed to think of yourself that way?

  103. Because of the negative connotation that word has for many of us.

  104. I'm not stuffy, stuck up, thinking I'm better than everybody else, holier than thou.

  105. Would you maybe accept it?

  106. You've been in church long enough.

  107. You're like, yeah, I think that's probably true.

  108. But kind of begrudgingly, like, I mean, maybe I am.

  109. But I'm really not excited because holy means no fun.

  110. I know that much.

  111. I hope to start changing the script on holy this morning.

  112. What it means for you to be holy.

  113. So that you'd be excited about being holy in 2025 or any other time.

  114. What a great why that is.

  115. What a great purpose.

  116. What adventure is in that.

  117. What fun even.

  118. Yeah, some of you don't believe that's going to be convincing.

  119. But let me back up for a minute before we go there.

  120. Your instincts were right, a couple of you, in word association.

  121. You can't talk about holiness without talking about God first.

  122. It is all about God.

  123. Holiness is sort of, it's his godness.

  124. What sets him apart from everyone and everything else as the one true God.

  125. We sang it that there is none beside thee.

  126. Perfect in power.

  127. Perfect in love.

  128. Perfect in purity.

  129. God is holy, holy, holy.

  130. Right?

  131. In fact, being holy is so associated with God in the Bible that whatever is associated

  132. with God, whatever gets close to him, becomes holy.

  133. That's how it happens.

  134. This is actually what got me thinking about this topic.

  135. We were reading toward the end of last year.

  136. If you were doing the Bible reading plan with us last year.

  137. And one of the last books we got to toward the end of the year was Leviticus.

  138. I kept noticing things in Leviticus that were holy to the Lord over and over.

  139. Lots of things.

  140. And see, what happens in Exodus, it's right before Leviticus.

  141. And at the end of Exodus, God's people finish building the tabernacle.

  142. It's the initial temple, the house for God to live in among them.

  143. And the book ends with Yahweh's presence coming down and filling the tabernacle, which is what

  144. makes it a holy place.

  145. It's just a nice-looking tent before God shows up to live there, right?

  146. And so in Leviticus, I noticed all sorts of things being referred to as holy, being set

  147. apart for God.

  148. The crazy things, a table, an altar, various utensils, a basin, a stand, every tenth animal,

  149. holy.

  150. And it's not that they were superior objects to all of the other objects.

  151. That's not what made them holy.

  152. What was it?

  153. It was that they were gods.

  154. They were in His presence.

  155. They were used for the purposes of God.

  156. So they were holy.

  157. Otherwise, honestly, they're not a whole lot different from the next table or the next cow

  158. or the next utensil.

  159. But holy, set apart to be gods.

  160. I just think about that.

  161. That's pretty cool for the average bowl, right?

  162. I mean, you're just a bowl, an ordinary, everyday bowl.

  163. And all of a sudden, you get set apart.

  164. And what happens to you?

  165. This bowl is going to witness the sacrifices for sins, for thanksgiving to Yahweh Himself.

  166. It's going to hear God's voice speaking to the priest.

  167. And most of the people of Israel don't ever get to hear it.

  168. It's going to be an instrument itself of cleansing and forgiveness as blood that is in the bowl

  169. is sprinkled on things.

  170. And on a daily basis, that's what it's going to be used for.

  171. How amazing for an average bowl, right?

  172. And it didn't even win a contest.

  173. It didn't perform the best or the longest as a bowl.

  174. It just got placed in God's presence.

  175. Wow.

  176. You starting to track with me?

  177. Being holy means being gods.

  178. It means an average person without having to perform to win a contest,

  179. without having to outdo someone else,

  180. can come in close contact with God Himself,

  181. can find oneself becoming an instrument of His healing in ordinary, everyday places,

  182. just by being placed in God's presence.

  183. And here's the deal.

  184. It's not just that that could happen, theoretically.

  185. It's that the Bible says over and over to God's people,

  186. you are holy.

  187. So many places.

  188. I'll just start with one.

  189. 1 Corinthians chapter 3.

    1 Corinthians 3 chapter mention

  190. Do you not know that you are God's temple

  191. and that God's Spirit dwells in you?

  192. If anyone destroys God's temple,

  193. God will destroy him.

  194. For God's temple is holy

  195. and you are that temple.

  196. You are holy.

  197. You, not the super spiritual elite task force.

  198. You are the tabernacle of the Most High God.

  199. His Holy Spirit dwells inside of you.

  200. So your why is to be His.

  201. Your purpose, above all else,

  202. is to live with Him, through Him,

  203. and for Him in everything.

  204. Young or old, by the way,

  205. kids, don't you check out on this

  206. because holy sounds like a word for big people.

  207. Elsewhere in the Bible,

  208. our kids are specifically referred to as holy.

  209. And then throughout your life,

  210. once you're holy, you never cease to be.

  211. I want us to see that set apart for God reality

  212. in two ways this morning.

  213. First, we were made for this.

  214. To be God's people.

  215. Yahweh is God.

  216. It is He who made us.

  217. And as a result, we are His.

  218. Psalm 100.

  219. In Isaiah, God gives us a glimpse of His heart

  220. in creating us.

  221. Everyone called by my name whom I created.

  222. Why?

  223. For my glory, whom I formed and made.

  224. It's about me, God says.

  225. Jesus boils it down to this in John 17.

  226. Remember, if you were here last year,

  227. this is His high priestly prayer.

  228. He's talking to His Father.

  229. And He says, where is life?

  230. It's in knowing and having relationship with

  231. the only true God and Jesus Christ whom He sent.

  232. We were made for this.

  233. I mean, imagine that you owned a race car, okay?

  234. Some of you have driven some of these cars that are designed to go 200,

  235. even 300 miles an hour.

  236. Imagine you owned one of those.

  237. That would be pretty cool.

  238. Imagine you took it out every day on the streets of your neighborhood here in Huntsville

  239. and drove it 20 to 30 miles an hour.

  240. There's a lot of things you could do with that race car.

  241. You could drop the kids off at school,

  242. although it might be a little tight squeeze for carpool in the back.

  243. You could coast down neighborhood roads to Lowe's

  244. and pick up a dozen bags of mulch,

  245. probably fit them in the back.

  246. You may have some issues when you get home to the driveway.

  247. It may do some damage.

  248. It may ding up the race car trying to get in the driveway

  249. with the back dragging full of mulch.

  250. It's not made for that.

  251. I mean, the race car could do some of those things, right?

  252. But the whole time, I think you'd be feeling something.

  253. I know the car would be.

  254. You'd be thinking, it could do so much more.

  255. This car was made for more.

  256. Wouldn't you be thinking that?

  257. Some of us thinking, man, I was made to sing.

  258. I was made to make good grades.

  259. I was made to play basketball.

  260. I was made to make money.

  261. And this year, I'm going to do that.

  262. Come what may, nothing's going to stop me.

  263. That's what I was made for.

  264. And you probably will.

  265. Although, if you do those things, you may get dinged up along the way.

  266. And at some point, you will almost certainly,

  267. if not this year, in a year soon, you'll feel,

  268. you know, I was made for more than studying and acing tests.

  269. Amen, students?

  270. I was made for more than studying and taking tests.

  271. Have you felt that before?

  272. Some of you feel that a lot right now.

  273. Others of you remember feeling it when you were younger.

  274. You know why you'll say that at some point?

  275. I just feel like I was made for more.

  276. It's because you were.

  277. You were made to be holy.

  278. Among other things,

  279. to glimpse the glory of God's infinite holiness

  280. and study Him until you realize

  281. you're never going to ace that test.

  282. There's always more to marvel at than you can comprehend.

  283. You were made to rest

  284. in an eternal security

  285. as the tightly held treasure of the king of the universe,

  286. even when the storms of life hit hard.

  287. You were made to share

  288. the wonder of a perfect creator

  289. who would grace a rebellious creation

  290. with mercy and life and hope.

  291. And you were made to strategize

  292. how that wonderful message

  293. would reach every corner of the globe

  294. and every person in your life.

  295. Whoa.

  296. Kids.

  297. God says if even one of your parents

  298. has this special relationship with Him,

  299. you are holy from birth.

  300. You were made to be His.

  301. So whatever else it is that you want to be,

  302. and I know there's a lot of things,

  303. firefighter, right?

  304. Professional athlete,

  305. nurse, engineer,

  306. whatever it is,

  307. first, you are holy.

  308. You're God's.

  309. And as good as those other things are,

  310. there's a lot of good things for you to be.

  311. They'll never fulfill you.

  312. They will never make you deeply happy on their own

  313. if you skip living with God.

  314. You'll always feel like that race car

  315. was made for more.

  316. And you were.

  317. 1,700 years ago,

  318. a man named Augustine

  319. tried out a bunch of these possibilities.

  320. He looked for life for his why

  321. in money,

  322. in women,

  323. in fame,

  324. and he finally concluded,

  325. you have made us for yourself,

  326. O Lord,

  327. and our hearts are restless

  328. till they find their rest

  329. in Thee.

  330. You have made us for what?

  331. For yourself.

  332. We are designed for God

  333. like a race car

  334. is designed for a speedway,

  335. like a fish

  336. is designed for water.

  337. Are any of you feeling

  338. like a fish out of water

  339. in this world?

  340. Are any of you feeling

  341. you're doing some good things,

  342. but you're a bit dinged up

  343. and there must be something more than this?

  344. I can't just do this

  345. the rest of my life.

  346. Are any of you feeling restless?

  347. Would you be honest enough

  348. to admit,

  349. I know that restlessness

  350. he's talking about.

  351. You're on the road

  352. to being happy

  353. and fulfilled

  354. and comfortable

  355. and respected

  356. and all the things

  357. you've ever dreamed of,

  358. but you feel the restlessness.

  359. Would you be willing

  360. to consider

  361. you may be feeling that

  362. because you were made

  363. for God.

  364. You were designed

  365. to live with Him.

  366. You're destined

  367. for another world.

  368. You're shaped

  369. with a void

  370. at the center

  371. of your soul

  372. that only God can fill.

  373. Well, one of the reasons

  374. we know what that feels like,

  375. I think we all

  376. can relate to that,

  377. is because all the way

  378. since the Garden of Eden,

  379. we've been trying

  380. to make ourselves happy

  381. apart from God.

  382. We prefer our own ways

  383. most of the time.

  384. The Bible says,

  385. although we were made for Him,

  386. we were separated

  387. from God

  388. by our sin.

  389. So what did God do?

  390. God sent His Son

  391. to deal with that sin

  392. so that we could live

  393. with Him again,

  394. so that we could be

  395. in the holy place

  396. where He lives.

  397. So, Christian,

  398. you were redeemed

  399. for God,

  400. not only made

  401. to be holy,

  402. but redeemed,

  403. remade,

  404. if you will,

  405. to be holy.

  406. Now, I just want you

  407. to marvel with me

  408. at this for a minute.

  409. It's amazing enough

  410. to think that God

  411. would make you

  412. once upon a time

  413. to be His,

  414. to be holy,

  415. set apart for Him.

  416. You know how much

  417. He loves you?

  418. How precious you are

  419. to Him?

  420. That when you broke,

  421. when you didn't work

  422. right anymore,

  423. when you weren't really

  424. in that relationship

  425. with Him

  426. the way you were

  427. supposed to be,

  428. He came and remade you.

  429. He came to find you

  430. broken and remake you

  431. and restore you

  432. in that relationship

  433. with Him,

  434. to make you holy,

  435. to set you apart

  436. for Himself forever.

  437. That's how much

  438. He loves you.

  439. That's amazing.

  440. I hope that gives you joy.

  441. I hope it delights

  442. your soul

  443. to know that the God

  444. of the universe

  445. thinks of you that way

  446. and doesn't just think,

  447. but acts towards you

  448. in that way.

  449. I talked to John Foreman

  450. this week.

  451. John knows Leviticus.

  452. I've heard him teach it.

  453. That's how I knew.

  454. I asked him what he learned

  455. about holiness,

  456. spending so much time

  457. in Leviticus.

  458. Most of us don't camp out

  459. in Leviticus

  460. for long periods of time.

  461. And John said the thing

  462. that struck him

  463. is how amazing it is

  464. that God keeps providing

  465. for us to be in His presence.

  466. He keeps making provision

  467. for us to experience

  468. His holiness.

  469. It's why right after

  470. God's presence shows up

  471. in the tabernacle

  472. among His people,

  473. we get the book of Leviticus,

  474. which is mostly,

  475. if you read it on the surface,

  476. about what?

  477. Sacrifices.

  478. All kinds of sacrifices.

  479. What's happening

  480. is that God is dealing

  481. with our sin

  482. to make us holy.

  483. And He especially does that

  484. when He sends His Son

  485. to be the ultimate sacrifice.

  486. He's dealing with our sin

  487. to have us back holy to Him.

  488. I could put passages

  489. about this up here all day.

  490. I'll just highlight

  491. a couple different ones.

  492. Ephesians 1

  493. says,

  494. this has been on God's heart

  495. since before you were born.

  496. That when the Father

  497. and the Son

  498. decided to rescue you,

  499. it was setting you apart

  500. for God

  501. that you would be holy

  502. with the goal,

  503. next verse says,

  504. of adopting you

  505. into His family,

  506. that you'd be His.

  507. Colossians 1

  508. says that making you holy

  509. is the specific effect

  510. of Jesus' sacrificial death

  511. on the cross for you.

  512. That you are now holy

  513. before God.

  514. He bought you.

  515. You are His.

  516. In fact, 1 Peter 2

  517. says it's not just you,

  518. but you're part of a group

  519. of people bigger

  520. than you can imagine

  521. that are a holy nation

  522. set apart for God

  523. that you might know Him

  524. and make His excellencies,

  525. His glory,

  526. His greatness known

  527. because we are God's people.

  528. His treasured possession,

  529. instruments to serve His purpose

  530. in His kingdom,

  531. to battle.

  532. This is what He saved you into.

  533. Into a battle

  534. that's not a cage match

  535. against flesh

  536. and blood,

  537. but it's actually

  538. even more adventurous,

  539. even more daring

  540. than entering into

  541. something like that.

  542. It's a battle

  543. against the forces of evil,

  544. against powers

  545. and principalities,

  546. Satan and his minions,

  547. and it's a battle

  548. with the souls

  549. of men and women

  550. and boys and girls

  551. and the destiny

  552. of all creation at stake.

  553. And He bought you back

  554. to be on His side

  555. in that great war.

  556. If being holy

  557. doesn't sound like fun

  558. to you,

  559. then you might need

  560. to get outside these walls

  561. for a little while.

  562. You might need actually

  563. to get wounded

  564. in this battle

  565. and to watch King Jesus

  566. ride in

  567. and swoop you up

  568. and rescue you

  569. and heal you

  570. while He Himself

  571. is wounded

  572. in your place.

  573. Pastor Jack Miller

  574. said of that

  575. last verse

  576. we just looked at,

  577. what is the fundamental

  578. nature of the church?

  579. To belong to God.

  580. That's why we exist.

  581. Those who are

  582. the God-possessed

  583. by virtue

  584. of their new life

  585. and relationship

  586. to God

  587. are also holy.

  588. If we belong

  589. to a holy God,

  590. we are inherently

  591. involved in His holiness

  592. by virtue

  593. of that relationship.

  594. I share that with you

  595. to remind us

  596. how it happens.

  597. We didn't perform well

  598. to attract

  599. God's attention.

  600. Remember?

  601. That's not how

  602. holiness develops.

  603. We are ordinary people,

  604. often those

  605. that no one

  606. would choose,

  607. who become set apart

  608. for something

  609. extraordinary

  610. because God

  611. shows up

  612. in our lives,

  613. decides to take

  614. residence

  615. in our hearts,

  616. making us

  617. the tabernacle

  618. of the Most High God,

  619. vessels for His

  620. majesty.

  621. I assure you

  622. that's more than

  623. you can contain

  624. and think about.

  625. But He dwells in you

  626. and the reality

  627. of that transforms

  628. everything about us.

  629. Everything.

  630. It makes you

  631. entirely different.

  632. Friday morning

  633. I woke up early.

  634. I was excited

  635. and I went outside

  636. and the ground

  637. was wet.

  638. Merely wet.

  639. And muddy

  640. in a lot of places.

  641. Messy.

  642. And I was very disappointed

  643. like some of you.

  644. But over the next few hours

  645. you watched

  646. what happened,

  647. didn't you?

  648. This pure

  649. white

  650. stuff

  651. started falling

  652. from heaven.

  653. and it came

  654. in contact

  655. with the messy

  656. ground.

  657. And I was inside

  658. for a little while

  659. and I came back out

  660. and it was perfect,

  661. wasn't it?

  662. It was

  663. beautiful.

  664. That's how God's

  665. holiness

  666. works.

  667. You got a glimpse

  668. of it this weekend.

  669. God comes down

  670. from heaven

  671. in utter purity

  672. to land

  673. on messy

  674. people.

  675. And there's still

  676. some mess

  677. underneath there.

  678. Right?

  679. But His

  680. perfect purity

  681. covers it.

  682. And we are

  683. as clean

  684. as the driven

  685. snow.

  686. And you only get

  687. to see that

  688. every once in a while

  689. around here.

  690. But that's something

  691. we got to taste

  692. and see

  693. that's holiness.

  694. Child of God,

  695. you are

  696. holy.

  697. Like it or not,

  698. and I hope

  699. the more we talk

  700. about it,

  701. the more you will

  702. like it.

  703. You are

  704. holy.

  705. Set apart

  706. to be

  707. gods.

  708. Well,

  709. so what?

  710. There is another

  711. facet of holiness

  712. in the Bible

  713. where God

  714. calls us

  715. to become

  716. holy.

  717. To holy

  718. living.

  719. And we'll

  720. focus on that

  721. next week.

  722. But here's

  723. what we're

  724. going to

  725. remember then

  726. as well.

  727. I want to

  728. connect this

  729. one dot

  730. before we

  731. come to

  732. the table.

  733. Dr.

  734. Martin Lloyd-Jones

  735. says it well.

  736. Holiness is

  737. not something

  738. we are called

  739. upon to do

  740. in order that

  741. we may become

  742. something.

  743. It is

  744. something we

  745. are to do

  746. because of

  747. what we

  748. already are.

  749. it's a big

  750. difference.

  751. Something we

  752. do

  753. because of

  754. what we

  755. already are.

  756. Because God

  757. has shown

  758. up.

  759. God has

  760. set us

  761. apart.

  762. God has

  763. made us

  764. holy.

  765. That's where I

  766. want to challenge

  767. all of us to

  768. start today.

  769. If it's all

  770. about Him,

  771. you are

  772. holy.

  773. You are set

  774. apart for God.

  775. You are made

  776. to live in

  777. relationship with

  778. Him every

  779. moment of

  780. every day

  781. and every

  782. place to

  783. be holy,

  784. holy.

  785. The why

  786. behind every

  787. other why

  788. for you

  789. must come

  790. back to

  791. Him.

  792. And some

  793. of us

  794. recognize that.

  795. For many

  796. of you,

  797. that's not

  798. surprising to

  799. hear this

  800. morning,

  801. but what

  802. you're living

  803. in is the

  804. reality that

  805. life is

  806. coming at

  807. you so

  808. fast.

  809. It's

  810. work and

  811. school and

  812. parenting and

  813. dance and

  814. sports and

  815. God and

  816. family and

  817. friendships and

  818. finances and

  819. it just feels

  820. overwhelming and

  821. it feels like

  822. the best we

  823. can do is

  824. squeeze God

  825. in among all

  826. of those other

  827. important things.

  828. Squeeze Him

  829. in when we get

  830. a minute to

  831. make it to

  832. church or to

  833. grace group or

  834. a few minutes

  835. of Bible

  836. reading.

  837. But I think

  838. God in His

  839. Word today is

  840. calling us to

  841. something a bit

  842. different.

  843. different to

  844. start with

  845. Him as we

  846. approach all

  847. of those other

  848. things.

  849. He's not one

  850. among them.

  851. We've been set

  852. apart for one of

  853. those specifically

  854. for Him.

  855. There are a lot

  856. of ways to

  857. approach this.

  858. We'll talk more

  859. next week, but

  860. talk with your

  861. grace group.

  862. Challenge one

  863. another.

  864. It's what the

  865. Bible means when

  866. it says spur one

  867. another on.

  868. What's it look

  869. like for you?

  870. One thing you

  871. can do is you

  872. could pick a

  873. verse of take

  874. my life and

  875. let it be.

  876. The song DJ

  877. just sang.

  878. And pray and

  879. reflect through

  880. it.

  881. I say just pick

  882. one because I'm

  883. still on the

  884. first verse.

  885. It's about time.

  886. You might want

  887. to skip it.

  888. Take my moments

  889. and my days,

  890. God.

  891. You take them.

  892. That means my

  893. mornings.

  894. And my evenings.

  895. It means my

  896. meetings that I'm

  897. expecting and it

  898. means my free

  899. time.

  900. It means my

  901. weekends and it

  902. means my vacation

  903. weeks.

  904. God, they're

  905. yours.

  906. They're to be

  907. about you.

  908. They're to be

  909. with you.

  910. They're to be

  911. for you.

  912. God, all of

  913. them.

  914. Nothing else

  915. assumed.

  916. Nothing else I

  917. know has to

  918. happen.

  919. And I've got to

  920. start on that now

  921. because I don't

  922. know about you,

  923. but I've already

  924. started dropping

  925. in on my calendar

  926. commitments for this

  927. year and ways I'm

  928. spending a lot of

  929. that time.

  930. We need to start

  931. from being holy,

  932. set apart for God.

  933. That's the one

  934. thing.

  935. Believing what's

  936. best is actually

  937. being His.

  938. That's the best

  939. thing.

  940. That's a life of

  941. real purpose.

  942. Would you be more

  943. excited about this

  944. year if you

  945. actually believed

  946. that God was

  947. living in you,

  948. that you were a

  949. tabernacle of the

  950. Most High God,

  951. and that He was

  952. going to be using

  953. you for His

  954. purposes that will

  955. last for eternity

  956. this year?

  957. Is that how you've

  958. thought about your

  959. year?

  960. Is that what you

  961. think He's going to

  962. do with the time

  963. that He's given

  964. you?

  965. I don't know how

  966. long it'll be.

  967. It may be just

  968. today.

  969. You may have a

  970. whole year ahead

  971. of you.

  972. But how exciting

  973. if God was going

  974. to show up and use

  975. you for His

  976. purposes.

  977. If you're really

  978. brave, you can

  979. start with take

  980. my hands and

  981. feet, what I do,

  982. where I go, or take

  983. my money and my

  984. intellect, or take

  985. my words and my

  986. will, all of them

  987. consecrated, set

  988. apart, holy to the

  989. Lord, because they

  990. are.

  991. Whatever you

  992. consider, I'm

  993. challenging you to

  994. wipe the slate

  995. clean.

  996. I've done this

  997. enough times to

  998. know that our

  999. first assumed

  1000. priorities are

  1001. often selfish.

  1002. Yes?

  1003. Have you ever

  1004. had a selfish

  1005. priority?

  1006. I think you

  1007. have.

  1008. If they're not

  1009. selfish, they may

  1010. well be culturally

  1011. driven, just

  1012. assumed priorities.

  1013. I have to make

  1014. this much.

  1015. I have to wear

  1016. this, work this

  1017. long, live here,

  1018. fit in there, reach

  1019. that goal.

  1020. I have to.

  1021. I want to

  1022. reframe that for

  1023. you.

  1024. You are holy.

  1025. You are set

  1026. apart for God.

  1027. You have to be

  1028. His, period.

  1029. Just stop there for

  1030. now.

  1031. No matter how old

  1032. you are, this year

  1033. is for knowing

  1034. Him, living with

  1035. Him, living for

  1036. Him, not to become

  1037. holy, but because

  1038. you are holy.

  1039. He's made it that

  1040. way.

  1041. Remember that.

  1042. He wants you to

  1043. remember that you

  1044. are holy.

  1045. It's one of the

  1046. things this table

  1047. teaches us because

  1048. as you come here,

  1049. just ask yourself

  1050. the question, how

  1051. else could He sit

  1052. and eat with you?

  1053. Right?

  1054. The holy

  1055. God

  1056. comes here

  1057. by His

  1058. Holy Spirit

  1059. to a holy

  1060. table.

  1061. Not holy

  1062. because it's

  1063. made of better

  1064. wood than

  1065. another table.

  1066. Not holy

  1067. because this

  1068. bread is better

  1069. bread than

  1070. some other

  1071. bread.

  1072. Holy

  1073. because He

  1074. is here.

  1075. The only

  1076. holy,

  1077. holy,

  1078. holy

  1079. one.

  1080. And He

  1081. eats with

  1082. holy people,

  1083. doesn't He?

  1084. That's the only

  1085. way it can be.

  1086. So we come

  1087. here

  1088. calling ourselves

  1089. holy,

  1090. not because we've

  1091. outperformed

  1092. anyone else.

  1093. Don't get the

  1094. wrong idea,

  1095. please.

  1096. But because

  1097. Jesus has

  1098. outgraced

  1099. our sin.

  1100. Amen?

  1101. He's taking

  1102. care of

  1103. everything that

  1104. would make us

  1105. unholy.

  1106. In fact,

  1107. when we

  1108. wandered

  1109. away from

  1110. God,

  1111. that's what

  1112. made us

  1113. unholy,

  1114. right?

  1115. That distance

  1116. from Him,

  1117. Jesus chased

  1118. after us

  1119. to bring us

  1120. back and

  1121. He's done

  1122. that for

  1123. you even

  1124. this week

  1125. when your

  1126. heart has

  1127. wandered away

  1128. from God

  1129. and He's

  1130. chased after

  1131. you to

  1132. bring you

  1133. back,

  1134. to make

  1135. you holy

  1136. as you

  1137. turn back

  1138. even now

  1139. by faith

  1140. to being

  1141. His.

  1142. I'm His.

  1143. That's where

  1144. I rest.

  1145. If that's you

  1146. this morning,

  1147. whether you're

  1148. a member of

  1149. this church

  1150. or another

  1151. church that

  1152. preaches the

  1153. good news

  1154. that we

  1155. are holy

  1156. not because

  1157. of our

  1158. good efforts

  1159. or our

  1160. good performance

  1161. but by grace

  1162. through faith

  1163. in Christ

  1164. alone,

  1165. then please

  1166. come and

  1167. eat and

  1168. celebrate with

  1169. us.

  1170. If that is

  1171. not your

  1172. why,

  1173. if you're

  1174. not about

  1175. wanting to

  1176. be holy

  1177. to the Lord

  1178. or you're

  1179. not sure,

  1180. you're still

  1181. kind of wondering

  1182. about that

  1183. because it

  1184. seems like

  1185. a big

  1186. change for

  1187. you,

  1188. a big

  1189. commitment

  1190. to make,

  1191. what a

  1192. great thing

  1193. to be

  1194. considering.

  1195. I'm so

  1196. glad you're

  1197. here considering

  1198. that and

  1199. we would

  1200. invite you

  1201. not to

  1202. come to

  1203. this table

  1204. to this

  1205. bread and

  1206. it's a

  1207. bite of

  1208. bread,

  1209. a sip of

  1210. wine.

  1211. We want

  1212. more than

  1213. that for

  1214. you.

  1215. We believe

  1216. that you

  1217. were made

  1218. for more

  1219. than that.

  1220. You can

  1221. come up and

  1222. observe,

  1223. you can come

  1224. and let

  1225. us pray

  1226. with you

  1227. but we

  1228. would love

  1229. to talk

  1230. with you

  1231. about a

  1232. holy God

  1233. who makes

  1234. unholy people

  1235. holy with

  1236. him forever.

  1237. It is a

  1238. big change

  1239. for people

  1240. like us.

  1241. It is a

  1242. big commitment

  1243. but more

  1244. than that,

  1245. it is a

  1246. big gift

  1247. that he

  1248. offers to

  1249. you freely.

  1250. Jesus,

  1251. on the night

  1252. he was

  1253. betrayed,

  1254. sat with

  1255. his disciples,

  1256. he took

  1257. bread and

  1258. he broke

  1259. it.

  1260. As I

  1261. ministering

  1262. in his

  1263. name,

  1264. give this

  1265. bread to

  1266. you,

  1267. he gave

  1268. it to

  1269. them and

  1270. said,

  1271. this is

  1272. my body

  1273. given for

  1274. you.

  1275. Do this

  1276. in remembrance

  1277. of me.

  1278. In the

  1279. same way

  1280. after supper

  1281. he took

  1282. the cup

  1283. and said,

  1284. this cup

  1285. is the

  1286. new covenant

  1287. in my

  1288. blood,

  1289. shed for

  1290. many for

  1291. the forgiveness

  1292. of sins,

  1293. drink from

  1294. it all of

  1295. you.

  1296. For as

  1297. often as

  1298. you eat

  1299. this bread

  1300. and drink

  1301. this cup,

  1302. you proclaim

  1303. the Lord's

  1304. death.

  1305. until he

  1306. comes.

  1307. You declare

  1308. that your

  1309. holiness comes

  1310. not from

  1311. yourself but

  1312. from one who

  1313. would give

  1314. himself for

  1315. you.

  1316. Let's pray.

  1317. Jesus,

  1318. what an

  1319. amazing gift.

  1320. What a

  1321. great celebration.

  1322. Father,

  1323. would you use

  1324. a common

  1325. table set

  1326. with common

  1327. food and

  1328. drink for a

  1329. holy purpose?

  1330. That you

  1331. would meet

  1332. very common

  1333. people and

  1334. by your

  1335. spirit so

  1336. work in

  1337. their hearts

  1338. that they

  1339. would be

  1340. all of us

  1341. for a very

  1342. uncommon

  1343. purpose for

  1344. you and

  1345. for your

  1346. kingdom and

  1347. your glory.

  1348. Meet with

  1349. us, we ask

  1350. in Jesus'

  1351. name.

  1352. Amen.
