  1. You are listening to a message from Southwood Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama.

  2. Our passion is to experience and express grace.

  3. Join us.

  4. As we open God's Word together again this morning, I mean, what a gift it is that we

  5. get to do that, right?

  6. That we get to open the Word of truth and hear the truth of God's greatness and read

  7. it together.

  8. We're going to return to John chapter 18, John's account of this fateful night where

    John 18 chapter mention

  9. Jesus is actually going to head to the cross.

  10. He has just been betrayed by Judas and his band of several hundred men, Roman soldiers,

  11. Jewish leaders.

  12. And John has kept our attention fixed firmly on Jesus.

  13. All the way through.

  14. He's the last man standing, controlling all the others, protecting his disciples.

  15. It reminded me this week of this iconic photo from 1989, the day after the Tiananmen Square

  16. massacre massacre in Beijing, China, when one man, you can barely even see him down there.

  17. He stood alone before a line of military tanks and he brought them to a halt.

  18. Tank man, he's known as.

  19. He was going to have to do this.

  20. Stepping forward bravely to stand against unjust power for the sake of others, even if it costs him.

  21. And now in these next verses, John turns our eyes back and forth from Jesus to Peter and back again.

  22. It seems a little bit odd the way John mixes these scenes together.

  23. But actually, if you think about it, this is a literary convention that you've seen or read hundreds of times.

  24. Right?

  25. It's in so many movies.

  26. When you go back and forth to draw a contrast.

  27. Right?

  28. To highlight specific differences in the two scenes or the two characters you're watching.

  29. Maybe you remember it most famously in a movie that cuts back and forth between a baptism in a church and violence on the streets.

  30. Let's pick up our reading at verse 12 of John 18.

  31. With our eyes still on Jesus, the last man standing.

  32. And let's read this first scene.

  33. Remember, just a few moments before, those guys had all fallen to the ground before the I am of Jesus.

  34. The last man standing in total control of the situation.

  35. But now he helps them back up.

  36. And they complete the arrest.

  37. First they led him to Annas.

  38. For he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas who was high priest that year.

  39. It was Caiaphas who had advised the Jews that it would be expedient that one man should die for the people.

  40. So many priests here, it can be easy to get confused.

  41. Now, Annas has been a high priest for a decade.

  42. Okay?

  43. But whereas the Jews elected him to that role and appointed him there for life,

  44. the Romans didn't want it to work that way with positions of power.

  45. They wanted a lot more turnover.

  46. And so Annas' sons and son-in-law Caiaphas have been taking turns serving as high priest.

  47. But Annas is still looked to by many Jews as the real high priest.

  48. So John takes this opportunity when he's telling us about this to remind us that Caiaphas,

  49. the son-in-law of Annas,

  50. had advised the Sanhedrin not long ago

  51. that even though some people might be upset,

  52. having this Jesus die would be best for the rest of them.

  53. One man die for the people.

  54. Two reasons I think John highlights it here.

  55. The first is that it makes really clear to us that Jesus is willingly going to an unjust trial, right?

  56. These guys he's standing before have already decided,

  57. they're already on the record that he should die.

  58. That would be a good thing if this guy would die.

  59. But more importantly, just as we saw back in chapter 11,

  60. Caiaphas spoke better than he knew, didn't he?

  61. John tells us he was prophesying actually.

  62. Jesus would indeed die for the people

  63. and all the other people who would be gathered to him,

  64. people like you and me if we trust him.

  65. God is using the wicked words of men for a greater purpose.

  66. Love how he does that.

  67. John reminds us yet again that Jesus is heading to the unjust trial

  68. and the biased rulers and the awful cross in our place.

  69. Jesus stands for us.

  70. Jesus stands for us.

  71. And then, as he stands, the camera pans back behind us,

  72. this large group that's escorting Jesus,

  73. and it finds Peter following at a distance.

  74. Verse 15.

  75. Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple.

  76. Now, you might wonder who that is.

  77. We don't know for sure.

  78. Many people think it's John himself,

  79. the author of this gospel who sometimes refers to himself

  80. without using his name,

  81. but it doesn't matter too much,

  82. whether it was John or another of the 12 disciples.

  83. But that disciple was known to the high priest.

  84. So since that disciple was known to the high priest,

  85. he entered with Jesus into the court of the high priest,

  86. but Peter stood outside at the door.

  87. So that other disciple who was known to the high priest

  88. went out and spoke to the servant girl

  89. who kept watch at the door and brought Peter in.

  90. The servant girl at the door said to Peter,

  91. you also are not one of this man's disciples, are you?

  92. He said, I am not.

  93. Now, the servants and officers had made a charcoal fire

  94. because it was cold,

  95. and they were standing and warming themselves.

  96. Peter also was with them,

  97. standing and warming himself.

  98. Now, let's not be too hard on Peter, okay?

  99. I mean, look, at least he's following, right?

  100. At least he's there.

  101. Most of the other disciples have left.

  102. They've gone to look for safety or sleep.

  103. Peter probably goes here following behind Jesus

  104. with the intent of being courageous,

  105. loyal, even heroic, perhaps.

  106. You can tell already tonight

  107. he's been looking for a chance, hasn't he?

  108. But he fails.

  109. There's no other way to put it.

  110. It's even more painful than that

  111. in the original Greek

  112. because we remember the power.

  113. Peter's heard the words.

  114. Jesus has just said,

  115. ego, a me, I am.

  116. And Peter says,

  117. uke, a me,

  118. I am not.

  119. But the contrast couldn't be clearer

  120. than the two of them.

  121. Jesus' embrace of the truth.

  122. Peter's denial of the truth.

  123. You with Jesus?

  124. I am not.

  125. It seems unlikely Peter planned this response,

  126. doesn't it?

  127. But confronted by the question

  128. of a mere servant girl,

  129. his knees buckle,

  130. his strength fails,

  131. and the one who had said

  132. that he would be with Jesus,

  133. he would die with Jesus,

  134. he can't even admit to living with them.

  135. Perhaps it was a small denial

  136. to one not very intimidating person,

  137. maybe nobody else heard,

  138. but it opens the door

  139. to a night of denial

  140. of his Lord, doesn't it?

  141. Before we apply this to ourselves,

  142. let me observe something here

  143. for those of us who struggle

  144. with the Bible stories

  145. of Jesus being true.

  146. Did this really happen?

  147. I want you to think,

  148. here are Jesus' disciples now,

  149. all of them,

  150. either abandoning him,

  151. betraying him,

  152. or denying him,

  153. as in Peter's case.

  154. The future leader of the church

  155. putting his failures

  156. on public record.

  157. That, friends,

  158. is a very strong mark

  159. of historicity

  160. when you're reading

  161. a written account.

  162. When the authors of Scripture

  163. write of their own failures,

  164. failures,

  165. and maybe you think,

  166. no big deal,

  167. you don't really care

  168. if this story is true,

  169. I mean,

  170. you don't follow Jesus,

  171. so no big deal

  172. if it is,

  173. you don't,

  174. if you deny

  175. that you follow Jesus,

  176. that's just telling the truth,

  177. right?

  178. Just being honest.

  179. But if this story is true,

  180. what about all the others?

  181. I mean,

  182. what about his dying

  183. on the cross?

  184. Next chapter.

  185. Or his rising from the dead,

  186. the next chapter.

  187. If everything John writes

  188. about him is true,

  189. then you can find

  190. a life in Jesus.

  191. You must find

  192. your life in Jesus.

  193. I mean,

  194. which one is it?

  195. It's one or the other.

  196. Either they made

  197. all of this up

  198. and threw themselves

  199. under the bus

  200. in the process

  201. just for good measure

  202. because they liked

  203. to embarrass themselves.

  204. Or they told

  205. these embarrassing,

  206. exposing stories

  207. because they're true.

  208. That's what happened.

  209. Back to our failures.

  210. I remember a couple years ago

  211. when Bill Nash

  212. was teaching us

  213. about sharing Jesus

  214. with our neighbors.

  215. I don't know

  216. if that sounded right.

  217. I didn't mean Bill Nash

  218. was our biggest failure.

  219. Sorry, Bill.

  220. Back to our failures.

  221. Bill Nash.

  222. It's not the way

  223. I thought about it

  224. the first time.

  225. I actually remember

  226. Bill teaching us

  227. about sharing Jesus

  228. with our neighbors.

  229. And he said,

  230. a basic beginning

  231. is making sure

  232. that the people you know

  233. know that you're a Christian.

  234. That you actually follow Jesus.

  235. That you're a disciple of His.

  236. Peter wants to keep

  237. that information

  238. to himself here,

  239. doesn't he?

  240. He doesn't run Jesus down.

  241. He doesn't yell

  242. terrible things at Him.

  243. He just avoids

  244. associating with Him.

  245. I don't know

  246. if you're like me,

  247. but I often find

  248. that it is easier

  249. than I realize

  250. to keep my mouth shut

  251. about Jesus

  252. day in and day out.

  253. often even

  254. without planning to.

  255. I used to be committed

  256. to telling people

  257. about Him.

  258. I'll tell you about

  259. college, Will.

  260. I went to Clemson

  261. and surprisingly,

  262. perhaps,

  263. to some of you,

  264. I was a bit intense

  265. back then.

  266. I used

  267. banned book week

  268. on campus

  269. as a chance

  270. to read from the Bible

  271. on a microphone

  272. in the Clemson Amphitheater.

  273. Saved them all.

  274. When the syllabus said

  275. pick one of four books

  276. to read,

  277. I bought all four of them.

  278. I was that guy.

  279. And I came to that first class

  280. with a copy of each one

  281. and a guy sitting

  282. in front of me,

  283. he hadn't gotten

  284. any of them

  285. and so he asked me

  286. if he could have

  287. one of mine.

  288. Of course.

  289. And he said,

  290. hey,

  291. how much was it?

  292. I said,

  293. just keep it.

  294. Jesus has given me

  295. way more than that

  296. for free.

  297. I'm happy for you

  298. to have it.

  299. You want to know

  300. about Jesus?

  301. That's freshman Will.

  302. That's what I was like.

  303. It's the way I am

  304. on a missions trip, right?

  305. Boy,

  306. if you put me

  307. on a plane

  308. on a missions trip,

  309. then you better

  310. watch out

  311. because the Muslim guy

  312. next to me

  313. and the Buddhist guy

  314. sitting right in front of me,

  315. they're going to tell me

  316. their whole life stories

  317. and get a gospel presentation

  318. on scratch paper

  319. before that plane lands.

  320. I'm in representative

  321. of Jesus mode

  322. that whole trip

  323. and in the taxi,

  324. at the restaurant,

  325. all the time.

  326. It feels like

  327. I'm in enemy territory.

  328. I can't wait

  329. to tell people about him.

  330. But just last week,

  331. I was sitting at a restaurant

  332. with some friends

  333. and our kind young waitress

  334. asks me this,

  335. can I get you

  336. some of our free

  337. homemade sourdough bread?

  338. And I say,

  339. is that a question?

  340. If I ever say no

  341. to free

  342. homemade sourdough,

  343. please check my pulse.

  344. But I went

  345. the entire meal

  346. with no comment

  347. about the free bread

  348. Jesus has given me.

  349. It was like she was

  350. asking for it.

  351. I mean,

  352. it crossed my mind

  353. to ask her

  354. if she knew

  355. about Jesus' free gift

  356. and how much

  357. he gives us,

  358. but I just decided

  359. it was easier not to.

  360. Another day,

  361. just two days after that,

  362. I went to drop off

  363. some donations

  364. at a thrift store

  365. and the young man

  366. asked if I wanted

  367. a receipt.

  368. No thanks.

  369. He said,

  370. but you don't want

  371. credit for it?

  372. No thanks.

  373. I mean,

  374. I had a schedule

  375. to keep.

  376. I was in a hurry,

  377. but not even one comment

  378. about Jesus giving me

  379. all the credit

  380. that I could ever need

  381. or anything like that.

  382. I had somewhere to go.

  383. I didn't even talk

  384. to him about Jesus.

  385. In those small,

  386. non-intimidating

  387. interactions,

  388. are we with Jesus?

  389. Are we not

  390. his representatives

  391. then too?

  392. Does he have to send you

  393. on a plane

  394. across the world?

  395. I'm not suggesting

  396. that you need

  397. a corny pun

  398. to bring Jesus

  399. into conversation.

  400. It's not really

  401. recommended.

  402. But are you looking

  403. for an excuse

  404. to leave him

  405. out of it?

  406. What I've seen

  407. in myself

  408. is that those habits

  409. of denying,

  410. even silently,

  411. just living so much

  412. of my life

  413. without reference

  414. to him,

  415. I'm denying

  416. my relationship

  417. with him.

  418. Those habits

  419. are easy to make

  420. and they're hard

  421. to break

  422. if I'm focused

  423. day in and day out

  424. on my comfort,

  425. my safety,

  426. my schedule.

  427. While Jesus

  428. is standing,

  429. Peter

  430. has fallen.

  431. Maybe we can relate.

  432. Is Jesus

  433. still standing?

  434. What's going on

  435. with him?

  436. Scene three

  437. goes inside the house

  438. to Jesus again.

  439. Verse 19,

  440. the high priest

  441. then questioned

  442. Jesus

  443. about his disciples

  444. and his teaching.

  445. Do you still have

  446. a bunch of followers

  447. out there

  448. that you've incited,

  449. you've stirred them up

  450. to cause trouble?

  451. What have you been

  452. telling them to do?

  453. What should we expect?

  454. Now the problem

  455. with this

  456. is that this is not

  457. the legal way

  458. to handle

  459. this arrest.

  460. This is not

  461. what should be

  462. happening.

  463. Witnesses

  464. are supposed

  465. to be called

  466. first

  467. and that should

  468. actually start

  469. with witnesses

  470. for the defense.

  471. The accused

  472. doesn't get

  473. questioned

  474. in Jewish law,

  475. certainly not

  476. by the high priest

  477. and Jesus

  478. points this out.

  479. Jesus answered him,

  480. I have spoken

  481. openly to the world.

  482. I have always

  483. taught in synagogues

  484. and in the temple

  485. where all Jews

  486. come together.

  487. I've said nothing

  488. in secret.

  489. Why do you ask me?

  490. Ask those

  491. who have heard me

  492. what I said

  493. to them.

  494. They know

  495. what I said.

  496. Call a witness.

  497. It's public

  498. knowledge.

  499. Nothing will

  500. surprise you.

  501. Your men

  502. just watched me

  503. tell my followers

  504. to put their

  505. swords away.

  506. Those who have

  507. heard and seen

  508. me teaching

  509. are the ones

  510. who should be

  511. testifying.

  512. That's how

  513. this should work.

  514. And when he

  515. had said these

  516. things,

  517. one of the

  518. officers standing

  519. by struck

  520. Jesus with his

  521. hand saying,

  522. is that how you

  523. answer the high

  524. priest?

  525. Jesus answered

  526. him,

  527. if what I

  528. said is wrong,

  529. bear witness

  530. about the wrong.

  531. But if what I

  532. said is right,

  533. why do you

  534. strike me?

  535. Annas then

  536. sent him bound

  537. to Caiaphas,

  538. the high

  539. priest.

  540. I'm speaking

  541. the truth.

  542. Jesus says,

  543. I'm urging

  544. him to do

  545. this the right

  546. way.

  547. I'm telling

  548. you that you

  549. don't have to

  550. worry about my

  551. followers starting

  552. a riot.

  553. Even though

  554. with a slap,

  555. the violence

  556. against Jesus

  557. has begun.

  558. Now here's

  559. someone a bit

  560. more dangerous

  561. and influential

  562. than the servant

  563. girl, right?

  564. Jesus is being

  565. threatened unjustly.

  566. A pattern that's

  567. going to continue

  568. throughout his

  569. trial.

  570. And the Jews

  571. are rushing this

  572. trial overnight

  573. because they

  574. fear the Passover

  575. feast and the

  576. upcoming Sabbath

  577. will delay their

  578. big chance,

  579. their chance to

  580. finish Jesus

  581. while they finally

  582. have him.

  583. They're going to

  584. do things they'd

  585. never do otherwise.

  586. Let's get him

  587. under the cover of

  588. darkness in the

  589. wee hours of the

  590. morning with no

  591. one to testify on

  592. his behalf.

  593. Here he is,

  594. now he's really

  595. trapped.

  596. Is Jesus

  597. intimidated?

  598. Is he caught

  599. into self-protecting

  600. silence where he'll

  601. deny the truth?

  602. Not hardly.

  603. He responds boldly,

  604. truthfully, even

  605. indirectly instructing

  606. the high priest

  607. himself about the

  608. just manner to

  609. proceed.

  610. Jesus declares the

  611. open statement of

  612. the truth.

  613. He's not hiding from

  614. anything, is he?

  615. His message never

  616. changes.

  617. No matter where he

  618. is or to whom he's

  619. speaking, he may be

  620. bound, he may be

  621. slapped, but he

  622. speaks boldly and he

  623. stands firmly no

  624. matter the pain or

  625. the cost.

  626. So he's off to

  627. another home, but

  628. that's next week.

  629. John wants first to

  630. finish Peter's part of

  631. the story here.

  632. Verse 25, back where

  633. we left Peter at the

  634. warm, crackling,

  635. charcoal fire.

  636. Peter.

  637. Now Simon Peter was

  638. standing and warming

  639. himself, so they

  640. said to him, you also

  641. are not one of his

  642. disciples, are you?

  643. He denied it and

  644. said, I am not.

  645. One of the servants of

  646. the high priest, a

  647. relative of the man

  648. whose ear Peter had

  649. cut off, asked, did I

  650. not see you in the

  651. garden with him?

  652. Peter again denied

  653. it and at once a

  654. rooster crowed.

  655. While Jesus is

  656. standing, succeeding

  657. for Peter, Peter

  658. keeps failing, denying

  659. again, uke me, I am

  660. not.

  661. I bet Peter never

  662. thought he would

  663. deny Jesus.

  664. He's a pretty

  665. confident guy.

  666. It was just earlier

  667. this evening that

  668. Peter had passionately

  669. proclaimed that even

  670. if everyone else ran

  671. away, he would stand

  672. with Jesus to the

  673. death if need be.

  674. Just tonight.

  675. I will never deny

  676. you.

  677. But denial ain't

  678. just a river, you

  679. know.

  680. You'll get that in a

  681. minute.

  682. Credit to Andrew

  683. Peterson.

  684. It's a helpful

  685. line because denial

  686. is not just a one-time

  687. thing.

  688. It's something you get

  689. caught in, isn't it?

  690. A small denial

  691. becomes a big

  692. problem.

  693. It snowballs into

  694. these repeated and

  695. more passionate

  696. denials of Christ.

  697. Peter gives in to his

  698. sin.

  699. He cracks the door on

  700. indulging his fear,

  701. his pride.

  702. Maybe this is a good

  703. place for all of us to

  704. consider the warning

  705. that Paul gives in 1

    1 Corinthians 10 chapter mention

  706. Corinthians chapter 10.

  707. Therefore, let anyone

  708. who thinks he stands

  709. take heed lest he fall.

  710. especially when you're

  711. sure you're going to be

  712. good.

  713. Watch out.

  714. When you know you're

  715. strong, when you think

  716. you're better than

  717. everyone else, Peter,

  718. watch out.

  719. Peter thought he would

  720. stand.

  721. Yet again tonight,

  722. where the spirit is

  723. willing, the flesh is

  724. still weak.

  725. Peter blows it again.

  726. Perhaps the first time he

  727. was just taken off guard,

  728. right now he'll get,

  729. nope, now he's stuck in

  730. the lie.

  731. Now he's committed to

  732. distancing himself from

  733. Jesus rather than

  734. standing by his king.

  735. Peter swore it would

  736. never happen like this.

  737. And then it did.

  738. I bet most of us can

  739. relate.

  740. You know that feeling?

  741. Oh, it's awful.

  742. You ever failed to stand

  743. with Jesus or speak for

  744. Jesus when you said you

  745. would?

  746. Just last week, you may

  747. notice I'm not having to

  748. go far back for these

  749. struggles in my life.

  750. I met with a group of men

  751. I love and we're talking

  752. about the rhythms and the

  753. habits in our lives that

  754. either draw us towards

  755. Jesus or kind of lead us

  756. away from Jesus.

  757. And I zeroed in for that

  758. day on one small change

  759. I committed to making.

  760. Even just privately in my

  761. own home, that's all it

  762. was.

  763. The first few minutes when I

  764. get out of bed in the

  765. morning, I want to talk

  766. first with Jesus.

  767. To contemplate Jesus.

  768. To start my day with him.

  769. This Friday I committed to

  770. the same thing because I

  771. was 0 for 7 this week.

  772. Wordle, ESPN, the news on

  773. my phone, that they kept

  774. getting my attention first.

  775. It was a small thing.

  776. It seemed so easy.

  777. I was really embarrassed

  778. that I didn't do it.

  779. When I said I would.

  780. This is something Jesus

  781. wants me to do.

  782. I said he wants me to be

  783. with him.

  784. He welcomes me to be with

  785. him.

  786. I'm going to do that.

  787. And again, no.

  788. Where have you fallen like

  789. Peter?

  790. Like me?

  791. Whom have you kept running

  792. down?

  793. What have you kept clicking

  794. on?

  795. When have you kept silent?

  796. What is Jesus calling you

  797. to do?

  798. And you know he is, but you

  799. are too self-protective to

  800. leave your comfort to stand

  801. with him.

  802. Even when you come here

  803. every week and open his

  804. word every day and you see

  805. Jesus standing there succeeding

  806. in much more dangerous and

  807. trying circumstances than you,

  808. you find you keep failing.

  809. Even when you're sure you

  810. won't.

  811. Even in the areas you're

  812. convinced you've got this

  813. one.

  814. It should break our hearts,

  815. shouldn't it?

  816. Even though our failures

  817. aren't recorded in Scripture

  818. for perpetuity like Peter's,

  819. I mean, there's still denials

  820. of our Savior.

  821. It's unfaithful to the

  822. faithful one.

  823. And this episode with Peter is

  824. not going to be the series

  825. finale and wrap everything up

  826. nicely.

  827. We have to wait till the end of

  828. John's gospel to wrap up Peter's

  829. story here.

  830. But there is a cliffhanger.

  831. There's a cliffhanger here in this

  832. passage that is full of hope.

  833. And if you're discouraged right

  834. now and if you feel the failure

  835. that I've felt and feel, you need

  836. to get this part.

  837. Peter again denied and at once a

  838. rooster crowed.

  839. What will come of Peter, we wonder,

  840. as the scene closes?

  841. Before we leave him, John wants to

  842. point us back to Jesus' upper room

  843. prediction just a few hours ago.

  844. Jesus says to Peter, will you lay down

  845. your life for me?

  846. Are you so sure?

  847. Truly, truly, I say to you, the

  848. rooster will not crow until you've

  849. denied me three times.

  850. Certainly not.

  851. Peter was so confident.

  852. Three times tonight?

  853. Yep.

  854. See, Jesus anticipates our failure.

  855. He knows our weakness.

  856. He's not surprised by our sin, is he?

  857. And, listen, this is so hopeful.

  858. He doesn't reject us because of

  859. those things.

  860. He didn't send Peter away.

  861. Go home, Peter.

  862. You're going to blow it.

  863. He didn't tell him not to bother

  864. coming to the garden to pray with

  865. him or try.

  866. No.

  867. No, instead of rejecting us, he

  868. invites us to repentance.

  869. And there's no question the sound of

  870. the rooster's crow was bad news for

  871. Peter, right?

  872. Can you feel that moment?

  873. It cut him to his heart.

  874. It exposed him as the denier that he

  875. was in that moment.

  876. I bet he remembered that moment on

  877. many more days when he heard that

  878. sound to start his day.

  879. Can you imagine waking up to that

  880. noise?

  881. In Luke's gospel, when Jesus tells

  882. Peter that he's going to deny him,

  883. Jesus also tells Peter that he has

  884. prayed for his faith to stand and for

  885. him to turn again, to repent.

  886. To repent means to turn from your sin

  887. in your heart to hate it because it's

  888. a denial, isn't it?

  889. It's a denial of the goodness, the

  890. sufficiency, the care of Jesus.

  891. You're going to find those things

  892. somewhere else.

  893. Turn from that back to Jesus.

  894. That's repentance.

  895. When Peter hears the rooster, meets

  896. Jesus' gaze passing by the courtyard

  897. apparently, and considers what he's done,

  898. he weeps bitterly.

  899. Friends, our failure, our weakness,

  900. our sin is worth weeping over

  901. and repenting of.

  902. When we turn back to Jesus, as worthy

  903. as it is that we be weeping in that

  904. moment, he does not meet us with a

  905. soul-crushing gaze.

  906. Can you imagine how capable he would

  907. have been of doing that to Peter in

  908. that moment?

  909. Maybe we'd expect it, but Jesus doesn't

  910. run us off.

  911. He welcomes us back.

  912. See, Jesus loves failures.

  913. Don't miss or forget that today.

  914. If you have failed even big time, there

  915. is great hope today because the gospel

  916. is not about you being strong enough or

  917. successful enough.

  918. The gospel is about God being gracious

  919. enough.

  920. Amen?

  921. There's forgiveness here with Jesus

  922. because he has succeeded where we've

  923. failed.

  924. He has spoken boldly where we've been

  925. silent.

  926. He has sacrificed himself when we've

  927. protected ourselves.

  928. Your denial, your failure, your sin is

  929. not bigger than his grace.

  930. Please know that.

  931. Please see that here.

  932. In his great kindness, Jesus makes Peter

  933. a leader in his church, an author of

  934. holy scripture, a trophy of his grace.

  935. That is the kind of king that he is.

  936. Don't you love that?

  937. There's no other kind you can have.

  938. You've blown it too many times.

  939. I've messed up again.

  940. And listen, here's the deal.

  941. I don't want you to think that it's just

  942. that forgiveness is out there.

  943. It's this thing, this intangible idea.

  944. Y'all, if that's all there is, if it's just a

  945. transaction, forgiveness in place of my

  946. denial, I'll just do it again.

  947. I mean, I'm not waking up early when I could

  948. get extra sleep and forgiveness.

  949. Is that all it is?

  950. I'll deny him again.

  951. Right?

  952. What helps us change?

  953. What makes us different?

  954. What gives us hope to stand?

  955. It's that when we repent, when we look back

  956. with tears flowing down our face, Jesus is still

  957. standing there and not to condemn, but to welcome us

  958. back into a relationship with him.

  959. Not a cold transaction.

  960. Not a pill to take.

  961. A relationship.

  962. A relationship.

  963. I'm not going to wake up early for condemnation.

  964. To feel shame.

  965. I know that.

  966. But this Jesus stands for me.

  967. He speaks boldly to injustice where I've failed.

  968. He prays for my restoration rather than my condemnation.

  969. He doesn't merely pass out forgiveness.

  970. He offers himself as the one who forgives.

  971. The forgiving friend that you can have and be with

  972. all the time.

  973. That makes me long to be with him.

  974. So do that for your heart.

  975. It makes me want to stand for him.

  976. It makes me eager to speak for him to everyone,

  977. everywhere.

  978. He's that worth talking about.

  979. Do you see him standing there for you?

  980. See the love, compassion in his eyes?

  981. You see him take the pain that you deserve?

  982. Don't you want to stand and speak and live with him and for him?

  983. To be not merely a denier.

  984. I know it.

  985. We've all been there.

  986. But a repentant, forgiven, and restored follower?

  987. A friend of Jesus?

  988. Don't you want that relationship?

  989. John Newton was infamously the captain of a slave ship.

  990. Awful.

  991. Denying God's very existence at the time.

  992. Running from God.

  993. When he met Jesus and finally became convinced that Jesus loved even him in spite of himself,

  994. he struggled deeply with his failures and sins.

  995. So when he became a preacher, he always preached of amazing grace that saved a wretch like me.

  996. He wept often over his sins until the day he died.

  997. But Newton had turned to see one thing bigger than his big sin.

  998. The grace of his Savior.

  999. As his mind failed him and he neared his death, he said,

1000. My memory is nearly gone, but I remember two things.

1001. That I am a great sinner and that Christ is a great Savior.

1002. He couldn't stop talking and singing about Jesus, the Savior, with amazing grace enough for all of us.

1003. In a few weeks, we'll be back around the charcoal fire and listen to Peter talk with Jesus about his love.

1004. But for now, the rooster's crow is the sound of conviction.

  1005. The call to repentance.

1006. And so wonderfully, it is the voice of gospel good news.

  1007. Hope.

  1008. Mercy.

  1009. For you.

1010. The God who knows your weakness stands strong in your place as the last man standing and invites you and me

1011. in our greatest failures to run or crawl or even just cry out back to him this morning.

1012. He will lift you up to live with him and for him.

1013. Let's ask for his help.

  1014. Wonderful, merciful Savior.

  1015. Precious Redeemer and friend.

1016. We give you thanks for your forgiveness and that you have given us not merely a pardon, but yourself.

1017. Thank you that those of us with nothing else to offer, who've denied you way more than three times,

1018. find a rich welcome back to you.

1019. You are so good to us and we worship you for your grace.

1020. And we praise you today, Lord Jesus.

  1021. Amen.
