  1. You are listening to a message from Southwood Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama.

  2. Our passion is to experience and express grace.

  3. Join us.

  4. God, we bow before you now.

  5. We come to adore you now.

  6. We come to receive from you the one who owns all things.

  7. We need you.

  8. We worship you.

  9. We ask your spirit would so work in our hearts now that we'd rather have Jesus.

  10. Help us.

  11. Help me.

  12. Teach us from your word.

  13. In Jesus' name.

  14. Amen.

  15. In John's account of Jesus' life, we are inching closer and closer.

  16. To the cross.

  17. A cross where we know Jesus is headed to climb in a very unusual way up on his throne.

  18. And that's because, as we saw earlier in Jesus' conversation with Pilate, he is a king from another world.

  19. With a kingdom entirely different from what we might expect.

  20. Just last week, Pilate has brought Jesus out before the crowd and said, behold the man.

  21. And though Pilate himself finds no guilt in Jesus, the crowds keep insisting that Jesus be killed.

  22. Now we pick up the reading at verse 12 of John 19.

  23. Pilate's last attempt to release Jesus.

  24. Already now, remember, beaten.

  25. The bloodied head.

  26. The bloodied head.

  27. The crown of thorns pressed into it.

  28. And we hear some sobering words that we'll contemplate together about Jesus as a king.

  29. This is God's holy word given to us to point our often forgetful and wandering hearts to find hope and life in the right place.

  30. From then on, Pilate sought to release Jesus.

  31. But the Jews cried out, if you release this man, you are not Caesar's friend.

  32. Everyone who makes himself a king opposes Caesar.

  33. So when Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judgment seat at a place called the Stone Pavement and in Aramaic Gabbatha.

  34. Now it was the day of preparation of the Passover.

  35. It was about the sixth hour.

  36. He said to the Jews, behold your king.

  37. They cried out, away with him, away with him, crucify him.

  38. Pilate said to them, shall I crucify your king?

  39. The chief priests answered, we have no king but Caesar.

  40. So he delivered him over to them to be crucified.

  41. What a poignant scene unfolds here outside the Roman praetorium in Jerusalem during the Passover feast.

  42. There's a lot going on.

  43. Now it's Friday, the day before the Sabbath.

  44. And the Jewish leaders turn up the heat on Pilate, don't they?

  45. They're getting worried.

  46. He's taking too long to deal with Jesus.

  47. And they know Pilate is all too fearful of being found to have failed his boss.

  48. His boss is a recently unpredictable and vengeful Tiberius Caesar.

  49. And so the leaders make their closing argument against Jesus.

  50. And Pilate finally walks out to render his verdict.

  51. Although multiple times we've heard Pilate pronounce that he's found absolutely no guilt in Jesus.

  52. Pilate makes a last ditch effort.

  53. Maybe one more time he offers them Jesus as their king.

  54. Certainly they don't want their king crucified.

  55. They'll go for this maybe.

  56. And the chief priests, the representatives of God's people reply,

  57. We have no king but Caesar.

  58. Wow.

  59. Those are powerful words in the moment.

  60. Get Jesus away.

  61. Kill him.

  62. Because we have no king but Caesar.

  63. I want us to see how shocking those words are this morning for a few minutes.

  64. But I want us to do that with an awareness that there are really only two types of people in this room in this regard.

  65. There are those of us who explicitly reject Jesus as king.

  66. And there are those of us who claim Jesus as king but still sometimes reject his kingship by bowing to another king.

  67. All of us this morning need to consider how we say we have no king but Caesar.

  68. And then we need to look squarely at Jesus and see him as king and know what that would mean.

  69. We have no king but Caesar.

  70. First consider what it means to say these words this fateful night in John 19.

  71. Then we'll look at some background to this climactic moment in the story of God's people and their king.

  72. We have no king but Caesar means first that God's people are rejecting him.

  73. Rejecting Yahweh as king.

  74. They're looking to other things.

  75. Something else.

  76. Someone else for life.

  77. Caesar would represent to them worldly power.

  78. Right?

  79. Control.

  80. Influence.

  81. They're saying when they say these words that they want Caesar to give them life.

  82. He gives them lots of things, doesn't he?

  83. And they're saying they'll follow what he wants them to live like in order to get what he gives them.

  84. Did you hear that?

  85. That is a description of street-level idolatry.

  86. Okay?

  87. That's what it means.

  88. That they will do what he wants them to do to get what he can give to them.

  89. An idol is something or someone that you look to for life.

  90. Something to shape you into its image in order to get what it promises to give you.

  91. That's why when I was a young baseball player, it fits to say that I idolized Greg Maddox.

  92. Wow.

  93. I wanted to be just like him.

  94. Although somehow I never won a Cy Young Award or a World Series.

  95. Maddox, for those of you who don't know, was a great Braves pitcher who didn't throw 100 miles an hour like Nolan Ryan.

  96. But he always seemed to make the ball move and end up right where he wanted it.

  97. He was crafty, consistent, control pitcher.

  98. So as a fellow pitcher with a fastball in the 80s, I idolized him as a pitcher.

  99. Meaning I wanted to hold the ball the way he did.

  100. I wanted to throw the ball the way he did.

  101. I even wanted to wear my socks the way that he did.

  102. That was the ticket to life, to pitch in his image.

  103. Part of Israel's idolatry is preferring to find life living in Caesar's image.

  104. That's the first part.

  105. But part of idolatry is also looking to enthrone ourselves, isn't it?

  106. Think about that.

  107. Before you bow to another idol, another king, you are putting yourself on the throne.

  108. It's really evident in this passage because part of the irony here when they say,

  109. we have no king but Caesar, is that these Jewish leaders actually despised Caesar.

  110. And Pilate knew it.

  111. Caesar kept them under his thumb, the Gentile ruler of their promised land.

  112. What are they really saying?

  113. What they're really saying is that they have no king at all.

  114. No king but themselves.

  115. They're rejecting the messianic hope.

  116. The promise of a king coming to deliver God's people.

  117. They will bow, they've decided, to whoever or whatever gets them what they want right now.

  118. Keeps them in control for now.

  119. They want that king.

  120. They're in charge.

  121. But this moment, these fateful words where his own did not receive him have been building for centuries, for generations, haven't they?

  122. I think that's part of why they're so often on our hearts and our lips too.

  123. We love to be on the throne, don't we?

  124. Don't we enjoy being in control?

  125. Well, part of that's understandable.

  126. All the way back in the beginning, God the king creates man and woman in his image.

  127. And he tells us that part of that reflecting the image of the king is to rule on his behalf.

  128. To be vice regents.

  129. That's what he made us for.

  130. To rule the way that Yahweh, the true king, would rule over his whole creation.

  131. So our instinct, as a good one, is to rule.

  132. But we can't do it right unless we're living in relationship with the true king.

  133. Tending the garden.

  134. Caring for the animals.

  135. Creating beauty in the image of the king.

  136. And listen, God's people definitely have a king.

  137. It's not unclear.

  138. They sing about him all the time.

  139. Psalm 29.

  140. The Lord Yahweh sits enthroned over the flood.

  141. The Lord sits enthroned as king forever.

  142. Psalm 47.

  143. Sing praises to God.

  144. Sing praises.

  145. Sing praises to our king.

  146. Sing praises.

  147. For God is the king of all the earth.

  148. Psalm 145.

  149. They sing about his kingdom.

  150. Your kingdom, God, is an everlasting kingdom.

  151. Your dominion endures throughout all generations.

  152. This is why the Hillel Passover prayer that would have been prayed over and over in Jerusalem this very weekend.

  153. Says to Yahweh, we have no king but thee.

  154. Wow.

  155. Sound familiar?

  156. We have no king but Caesar?

  157. From the very first sin in Eden, men and women, boys and girls, have been rejecting the true king for our own idols.

  158. Looking to what looks good to us, right?

  159. What will give us life?

  160. Adam and Eve, right?

  161. The nation of Israel at the time of the judges.

  162. Another great example of this.

  163. Gideon rescued God's people.

  164. God sent him as a judge to deliver them.

  165. And they wanted to make this flawed man their king.

  166. Gideon said, no way.

  167. Gideon said to them, I will not rule over you.

  168. My son will not rule over you.

  169. The Lord will rule over you.

  170. You have a king.

  171. You have a king.

  172. But the problem was they had quit acknowledging Yahweh's rule.

  173. The whole book of Judges says over and over, in those days, there was no king in Israel.

  174. Everyone did what was right in his own eyes.

  175. Man, we go there quickly these days, don't we?

  176. I know who I am, how I should live, what I want.

  177. I know that.

  178. When the Israelites do ask God for a king like the nations, Samuel, their last judge, is distraught.

  179. And God says to Samuel, hey, don't take it personally.

  180. Obey the voice of the people and all they say to you.

  181. For they have not rejected you.

  182. You're not the king, Samuel.

  183. They have rejected me from being king over them.

  184. They want a king that they can see and they can follow wherever he leads.

  185. They don't care if he leads them after Yahweh or not.

  186. See, they were made to look like Yahweh.

  187. But they were longing to look like the nations.

  188. To be remade in their image.

  189. They reject Yahweh and they get Saul.

  190. When that doesn't go well, God says, look, if anyone's going to be king of my people,

  191. the point will be to point them to me with your whole heart.

  192. Point them away from the idols of the nations around them.

  193. Remind them to rule over my world in my image.

  194. Show them, king, what the true king looks like.

  195. And so David and Solomon come to the throne and it's repeatedly called the throne of Yahweh.

  196. The throne of the Lord that they will sit on.

  197. And many, many evil kings, if you've read through those books before, follow them.

  198. They lead the people away from God.

  199. Even many of those kings setting up new idols for the people to worship.

  200. That's what happens all through the history of the Old Testament.

  201. When you reject Yahweh, like we read earlier in Jeremiah chapter 2,

    Jeremiah 2 chapter mention

  202. you look somewhere else for life.

  203. Another idol to bow to.

  204. Something to be shaped in its image to give you what you want.

  205. We're always being shaped, right?

  206. Formed into something's image all the time.

  207. The question is, what is it?

  208. So look at the description of a pretty good king.

  209. There are some.

  210. Hezekiah.

  211. 2 Kings 18.

  212. What does a good king do?

  213. He tears down idols.

  214. He rules God's way.

  215. He points the people to Yahweh.

  216. And to hope in his promises.

  217. Because what's clear throughout these centuries in the Psalms and the Prophets,

  218. over and over so many examples,

  219. is that Yahweh is going to send a king for his people.

  220. There's someone coming.

  221. A king who will never leave the throne.

  222. A king who will perfectly reflect God's image.

  223. A king who will destroy every idol and any other pretender to the throne of God

  224. and lead God's people in life everlasting.

  225. That is where the term Messiah, anointed one, comes from.

  226. That was the hope of generations of Jews, right?

  227. They needed a king like that.

  228. The Messiah.

  229. The king.

  230. The faithful servant of God who will rescue us once and for all

  231. by bringing us back into relationship with the true king.

  232. That's what they're longing for.

  233. That's what they're looking forward to for generations and generations.

  234. Yet on this night,

  235. when Jesus stands before them in a purple robe,

  236. with a bloodied face,

  237. topped by a crown of thorns,

  238. they reject messianic hope as well.

  239. He came to his own.

  240. People who grew up hearing about him all the time.

  241. But his own did not receive him.

  242. We have no king but Caesar.

  243. Really, no king at all, right?

  244. If you don't listen carefully to their accents,

  245. you might think that they're American patriots.

  246. Our country has a rich history of rejecting kings,

  247. their tea,

  248. and their taxes.

  249. We're proud.

  250. And we have a rich history of enthroning ourselves as king,

  251. don't we?

  252. Maybe we should be less proud of that part.

  253. But I think that you and I inherit that heart from our spiritual fathers and our cultural fathers.

  254. Just think for a minute.

  255. I bow to idols all the time.

  256. Shape myself in their image.

  257. Enthrone myself.

  258. Just thinking of a few ways.

  259. I do worship Jesus as king,

  260. but I reject him as king

  261. when as a parent,

  262. I think my hope for my kids lies

  263. in my controlling what they do

  264. and where they go

  265. and what they believe.

  266. I reject the messianic hope

  267. that Jesus alone rescues them

  268. when I quit praying so much for them

  269. and I start pressuring them to perform the way I want them to.

  270. God, forgive me.

  271. That's idolatry.

  272. We reject Jesus as king by searching for life,

  273. for a firm foundation,

  274. for a successful life somewhere else.

  275. You know, I'll do things Jesus' way

  276. and prioritize my relationship with God

  277. once I get the next promotion

  278. and settle into my long-term career

  279. and have financial security.

  280. Then I can live for Jesus.

  281. For the time being,

  282. I'll bow to Jesus on Sundays,

  283. but honestly, I'm living my life

  284. formed by another king

  285. and another kingdom most of the week.

  286. Friends, just in case you don't recognize that,

  287. that's idolatry at its finest, right?

  288. Honoring God with our lips,

  289. with hearts far from him.

  290. Focusing on our outward appearance

  291. while neglecting our inward formation in God's image.

  292. Living like the firm foundation

  293. is worldly success

  294. while singing about God being worthy.

  295. Spending way less time pursuing God

  296. than pursuing success

  297. and somehow expecting to be formed into his image.

  298. God, forgive us.

  299. If you're there right now,

  300. these idolatrous habits

  301. and patterns of life,

  302. they're hard to break, aren't they?

  303. And we...

  304. We still think we're worshiping God.

  305. We just have forgotten

  306. how to quit bowing to the idols.

  307. We reject Jesus as king

  308. when we say we love and follow him

  309. but live according to our own designs.

  310. We read God's design for our sexuality,

  311. for marriage,

  312. but we're pretty sure

  313. we've got better ideas these days.

  314. From where we sit,

  315. on our throne,

  316. this makes more sense

  317. and it feels like more life,

  318. better life.

  319. Maybe we think in the back of our minds,

  320. after all,

  321. if Jesus doesn't come through,

  322. I better have some hope

  323. and some life already,

  324. somewhere else.

  325. God, forgive us.

  326. Y'all, I've seen all this idolatry

  327. and much more in my own heart and life.

  328. Do you see any idolatry like this

  329. in your own heart and life?

  330. Can you think of anywhere

  331. you're silently rejecting

  332. the kingship of Jesus,

  333. preferring your own rule?

  334. It's understandable, friends.

  335. You were made to rule

  336. just as number two,

  337. not number one.

  338. In the name of the king,

  339. not in your own name,

  340. for his glory,

  341. not for your own success and comfort.

  342. Do you honestly think

  343. you're managing life fine

  344. without him most days?

  345. Do you feel at peace

  346. only when you're in control

  347. and spend most days

  348. deeply anxious,

  349. worried, afraid?

  350. Do you believe you know better

  351. what to do with the time

  352. that he gives you,

  353. the body he made,

  354. the others he made

  355. in his image?

  356. we have no king but Caesar.

  357. It's a rejection of God.

  358. It's idolatry.

  359. It's a rejection of hope

  360. in the Messiah.

  361. All of us are guilty at times.

  362. We need to repent.

  363. We need to quit bowing

  364. to worthless idols.

  365. We need to turn back

  366. to King Jesus.

  367. How do you do that?

  368. Pilate,

  369. whether he knows it or not,

  370. is offering us

  371. the path

  372. to true life.

  373. Behold

  374. your

  375. king.

  376. It's the only way

  377. that I know

  378. to dethrone

  379. the idols

  380. of your heart,

  381. to kick yourself

  382. off the throne,

  383. to behold

  384. your king,

  385. to bow

  386. to Jesus.

  387. What I mean

  388. when I

  389. say that

  390. is instead of

  391. the eyes

  392. of your heart

  393. looking to

  394. other things

  395. for life,

  396. looking to

  397. enthrone

  398. yourself,

  399. instead

  400. look to

  401. Jesus

  402. desperately

  403. as the

  404. only one

  405. in control.

  406. Not him

  407. with a little bit

  408. of you.

  409. As the only

  410. king you can

  411. trust

  412. to rule

  413. over all

  414. things.

  415. The one

  416. without whom

  417. you must

  418. give up

  419. hope

  420. of peace

  421. and joy

  422. and life.

  423. You've bowed

  424. to other idols.

  425. Only

  426. King Jesus

  427. can restore

  428. you to God

  429. and enable

  430. you to live

  431. the life

  432. that you

  433. were made

  434. for.

  435. That's

  436. looking to

  437. him

  438. desperately.

  439. Jesus,

  440. I need

  441. you.

  442. And

  443. look to

  444. him

  445. daily.

  446. Not just

  447. bow the

  448. knee once.

  449. Many of us

  450. have done

  451. that,

  452. have acknowledged

  453. Jesus as

  454. king,

  455. but actually

  456. realize that

  457. he is ruling

  458. for you

  459. in every

  460. moment,

  461. in every

  462. situation,

  463. even the ones

  464. you can't

  465. see it.

  466. He's not

  467. cheering you

  468. on in hopes

  469. that you

  470. can win

  471. the battle

  472. yourself.

  473. He's not

  474. a cosmic

  475. cheerleader.

  476. He's coming

  477. in to conquer

  478. you,

  479. to actually

  480. to let you

  481. off the

  482. throne

  483. and give

  484. you rest.

  485. So that

  486. when you do

  487. stand up to

  488. fight,

  489. it is in

  490. his already

  491. accomplished

  492. victory.

  493. That's the

  494. kind of king

  495. that he is.

  496. When King

  497. Simba comes

  498. back to

  499. Pride Rock,

  500. there are

  501. many lions

  502. and other

  503. good animals.

  504. They've

  505. been fighting

  506. but mostly

  507. cowering in

  508. fear and

  509. losing.

  510. And he

  511. doesn't just

  512. provide inspiration

  513. for their

  514. fight so they

  515. do better.

  516. What happens?

  517. They fall

  518. back and

  519. stand behind

  520. him and

  521. he steps

  522. forward to

  523. defeat their

  524. greatest enemies

  525. and then at

  526. the end they

  527. rush forward

  528. and clean up

  529. the scattering

  530. hyenas.

  531. just as David

  532. defeated Goliath

  533. on behalf of

  534. God's fearful

  535. people and

  536. they then

  537. rushed forward

  538. to plunder

  539. the fleeing

  540. Philistines.

  541. So Jesus,

  542. our champion,

  543. defeats all

  544. his and our

  545. enemies and

  546. in so doing

  547. this king

  548. invites us

  549. to rest,

  550. to rejoice

  551. in his victory

  552. and then

  553. in his train

  554. to plunder

  555. the fleeing

  556. darkness

  557. in the battle

  558. that he's

  559. already won.

  560. Bowing to

  561. King Jesus,

  562. it actually

  563. means really

  564. truly looking

  565. to him,

  566. doesn't it?

  567. Remembering

  568. often that

  569. he is on

  570. the throne,

  571. applying that

  572. reality,

  573. that truth

  574. that we say

  575. we believe

  576. to the

  577. relationships,

  578. the decisions,

  579. the situations

  580. of my life

  581. that seem out

  582. of control.

  583. Or they

  584. seem harmful

  585. to me.

  586. I mean,

  587. honestly,

  588. ask yourself,

  589. if you're not

  590. at any point

  591. in your day

  592. remembering

  593. that Jesus

  594. is on the

  595. throne of

  596. your life,

  597. how would

  598. you expect

  599. to be formed

  600. in his

  601. image?

  602. What happens

  603. when you do

  604. behold him?

  605. What happens

  606. when your eyes

  607. are fixed,

  608. when you see

  609. who's really

  610. on the throne,

  611. who the true

  612. king is?

  613. Then idols

  614. are displaced.

  615. self is

  616. dethroned,

  617. the true

  618. king is

  619. crowned,

  620. and his

  621. image starts

  622. to be formed

  623. in us

  624. more and

  625. more.

  626. Behold

  627. your

  628. king.

  629. That's what

  630. I'd like us

  631. to spend

  632. the last few

  633. minutes doing

  634. together.

  635. If you've

  636. never seen

  637. Jesus

  638. as king,

  639. I'd like to

  640. encourage you

  641. just to imagine

  642. what it would

  643. be like

  644. to have a

  645. king like

  646. this,

  647. to bow to

  648. him.

  649. I assure

  650. you that he

  651. is quite

  652. unique in

  653. ways that you

  654. might not even

  655. believe,

  656. but if you'll

  657. look at him

  658. and just

  659. imagine,

  660. wouldn't it

  661. be wonderful

  662. to follow a

  663. king like

  664. this?

  665. If you know

  666. him but you've

  667. started bowing

  668. elsewhere,

  669. I want you to

  670. just take a

  671. deep breath

  672. and gaze on

  673. his beauty

  674. and his

  675. majesty for a

  676. few minutes

  677. with me

  678. and so rest

  679. and find

  680. hope and

  681. find life

  682. in Jesus

  683. our king.

  684. I'm grateful

  685. for the

  686. inspiration

  687. and some

  688. words from

  689. Pastor Shadrach

  690. Meshach

  691. Lockridge.

  692. What a great

  693. name.

  694. Shadrach and

  695. Meshach in the

  696. same.

  697. He ministered in

  698. California in the

  699. last century and

  700. he once preached

  701. an Easter themed

  702. sermon titled

  703. That's My

  704. King.

  705. I'll say

  706. that's our

  707. king.

  708. Just behold

  709. him for a few

  710. minutes.

  711. He's the king

  712. of creation.

  713. He's the king

  714. of righteousness.

  715. He's the king

  716. of promise.

  717. He's the king

  718. of redemption.

  719. He's the king

  720. of heaven.

  721. He's the king

  722. of glory.

  723. That's our

  724. king.

  725. The king of

  726. kings.

  727. The lord of

  728. lords.

  729. Look at him

  730. there for just a

  731. moment in this

  732. passage we just

  733. read.

  734. There he is.

  735. He's bloody.

  736. Yet he doesn't

  737. fight back.

  738. He's misunderstood.

  739. He's accused

  740. falsely.

  741. He's mocked

  742. unjustly.

  743. unjustly.

  744. He sits silent

  745. when he knows

  746. he's being led

  747. to the slaughter.

  748. Y'all he is

  749. absolutely committed

  750. to seeing this

  751. through.

  752. To the death

  753. in our

  754. place.

  755. When betrayal

  756. is rearing

  757. its ugly

  758. head.

  759. When the

  760. awful cross

  761. looms

  762. nearer and

  763. nearer.

  764. when the

  765. terrors of

  766. bearing sin

  767. torment his

  768. soul.

  769. Our king

  770. stands

  771. firm.

  772. So listen

  773. nothing in

  774. heaven or on

  775. earth will keep

  776. him from

  777. loving you.

  778. From rescuing

  779. you.

  780. From holding

  781. you.

  782. He is

  783. enduringly

  784. strong.

  785. He's entirely

  786. sincere.

  787. He's eternally

  788. steadfast.

  789. He's immortally

  790. graceful.

  791. He's

  792. imperially

  793. powerful.

  794. He is

  795. impartially

  796. merciful.

  797. He's our

  798. king.

  799. His promise

  800. is sure.

  801. His goodness

  802. is limitless.

  803. His mercy

  804. is everlasting.

  805. His love

  806. is unfailing.

  807. His word

  808. is eternal.

  809. His grace

  810. is sufficient.

  811. His reign

  812. is righteous.

  813. His mission

  814. is accomplished.

  815. And his

  816. yoke is easy.

  817. And his

  818. burden is

  819. light.

  820. That's our

  821. king.

  822. Marvel at

  823. him for a

  824. minute.

  825. Close your

  826. eyes if you

  827. need to.

  828. Y'all he

  829. dignifies his

  830. followers with

  831. high callings

  832. and forgives us

  833. when we fall

  834. short.

  835. He is

  836. condemned

  837. right here

  838. at the

  839. judgment

  840. seat so

  841. that there

  842. will be

  843. no

  844. condemnation

  845. at the

  846. judgment

  847. day for

  848. those who

  849. are in

  850. Christ

  851. Jesus.

  852. Amen.

  853. He conquers

  854. all of

  855. his and

  856. our

  857. enemies

  858. except for

  859. those that

  860. he picks up

  861. off the

  862. ground long

  863. enough to

  864. hang him on

  865. a cross

  866. where he

  867. conquers our

  868. greatest

  869. enemies once

  870. and for

  871. all.

  872. And he

  873. lifts us up

  874. then from the

  875. ash heap to

  876. seat us with

  877. him in the

  878. heavenly places

  879. far above all

  880. other rule or

  881. power or

  882. dominion that

  883. ever existed or

  884. ever will

  885. exist.

  886. that's our

  887. king and

  888. we're seated

  889. with him.

  890. He's the

  891. visible image

  892. of the

  893. invisible God.

  894. He shows

  895. us what

  896. God is like

  897. in the flesh

  898. standing there

  899. as you

  900. look up at

  901. him.

  902. He shows us

  903. God's heart.

  904. He shows us

  905. God's commitment

  906. to us

  907. as he

  908. restores us

  909. to God

  910. and to the

  911. very image

  912. that we

  913. were created

  914. to reflect.

  915. Religious

  916. leaders couldn't

  917. stand him

  918. but they found

  919. out they

  920. couldn't stop

  921. him.

  922. Pilate

  923. couldn't find

  924. any fault

  925. in him.

  926. The people

  927. couldn't decide

  928. about him.

  929. The witnesses

  930. couldn't agree

  931. about him.

  932. Herod couldn't

  933. kill him.

  934. Death

  935. couldn't handle

  936. him and the

  937. grave couldn't

  938. hold him.

  939. That's our

  940. king.

  941. He's risen

  942. and reigning.

  943. Listen,

  944. he's never

  945. out of control.

  946. Never.

  947. He's never

  948. out of love.

  949. He's never

  950. out of patience.

  951. He's never

  952. out of grace.

  953. Our good

  954. and gracious

  955. king,

  956. you need to

  957. see him and

  958. know he's

  959. never out

  960. of control.

  961. Nowhere in

  962. your life

  963. never is he

  964. out of control.

  965. He strengthens

  966. the weak.

  967. He helps

  968. the tempted.

  969. He sympathizes

  970. with the

  971. downcast.

  972. He draws

  973. near to the

  974. brokenhearted.

  975. He forgives

  976. sinners.

  977. He heals

  978. the sick.

  979. He discharges

  980. debtors.

  981. He sets

  982. captives free.

  983. He defends

  984. the feeble.

  985. He blesses

  986. the young.

  987. He regards

  988. the aged.

  989. He beautifies

  990. the meek.

  991. He's the

  992. son of God.

  993. He's the

  994. savior of

  995. sinners.

  996. He's the

  997. friend of

  998. failures.

  999. He's the

  1000. shepherd of

  1001. the sheep.

  1002. He's the

  1003. light of

  1004. the world.

  1005. He's the

  1006. hope of

  1007. the nations.

  1008. And he's

  1009. our king.

  1010. He's the

  1011. alpha

  1012. and the

  1013. omega.

  1014. The beginning

  1015. and the

  1016. end.

  1017. He always

  1018. has been

  1019. and always

  1020. will be.

  1021. He had no

  1022. predecessor

  1023. and he will

  1024. have no

  1025. successor.

  1026. He's not up

  1027. for re-election

  1028. and he will

  1029. never resign.

  1030. He is

  1031. unparalleled.

  1032. He's supreme.

  1033. He is

  1034. pre-eminent.

  1035. that's our

  1036. king.

  1037. He wants

  1038. you to see

  1039. him.

  1040. He wants

  1041. you to see

  1042. him like

  1043. that.

  1044. He invites

  1045. you to rest

  1046. in him.

  1047. He calls

  1048. you to

  1049. worship him.

  1050. He enables

  1051. you to find

  1052. life in

  1053. him.

  1054. He offers

  1055. you to have

  1056. hope in

  1057. him.

  1058. He urges

  1059. you to

  1060. trust him.

  1061. That's our

  1062. king.

  1063. O king

  1064. Jesus,

  1065. give us

  1066. eyes to

  1067. see.

  1068. Give us

  1069. knees to

  1070. bow.

  1071. Give us

  1072. hearts to

  1073. worship

  1074. and to

  1075. light in

  1076. and rest

  1077. in you.

  1078. our

  1079. king.

  1080. We ask

  1081. it in

  1082. your

  1083. name.

  1084. Amen.
