  4. House and the empty tomb. What happens in between there?

  5. It's going to give us several final views of our crucified King.

  6. Before we read it, I want to remember just, maybe you've been here every week, maybe you haven't,

  7. but just a few of the things we've been seeing about Jesus in this story.

  8. How we've seen Him specifically as King, not just on Palm Sunday, although He was hailed as King on Palm Sunday,

  9. but just in the last 24 hours of Thursday and Friday, Jesus is in control of every painful moment, isn't He?

  10. He spoke to His betrayer ahead of time, and then He had to awaken the awestruck soldiers who'd fallen to the ground at His I Am.

  11. When Pilate tried to question Him, He ended up questioning Pilate and having to explain to Him the nature of His unique kingdom.

  12. When being mocked with a crown of thorns, His silence reminded us that no one takes His life from Him,

  13. but He lays it down of His own accord.

  14. There's a sign on the cross that reads, King of the Jews,

  15. and He gives His life, lifted up to draw all kinds of people

  16. to Himself.

  17. He endures the fires of hell for His subjects to protect them, to fulfill the Scripture.

  18. In fact, He is the King of glory, paying all of our debts so that we have nothing left to pay

  19. or earn to be in His kingdom.

  20. It is finished!

  21. And then He remains in control to the very end and hands His Spirit to His Father.

  22. Man, what a king!

  23. But now it seems to be over.

  24. What will become of a crucified king?

  25. We continue reading at verse 31 of John 19.

  26. God's Word given for our blessing.

  27. Since it was the day of preparation, and so that the bodies would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath,

  28. for that Sabbath was a high day,

  29. the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken and that they might be taken away.

  30. So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first and of the other who had been crucified with Him.

  31. But when they came to Jesus and saw that He was already dead,

  32. they did not break His legs.

  33. But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear,

  34. and at once there came out blood and water.

  35. He who saw it has borne witness.

  36. His testimony is true, and He knows that He is telling the truth,

  37. that you also may believe.

  38. For these things took place that the Scripture might be fulfilled.

  39. Not one of His bones will be broken.

  40. And again, another Scripture says,

  41. They will look on Him whom they have pierced.

  42. After these things, Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus,

  43. but secretly for fear of the Jews,

  44. asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus,

  45. and Pilate gave Him permission.

  46. So he came and took away His body.

  47. Nicodemus also, who earlier had come to Jesus by night,

  48. came bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about 75 pounds in weight.

  49. So they took the body of Jesus and bound it in linen cloths with the spices,

  50. as is the burial custom of the Jews.

  51. Now in the place where He was crucified, there was a garden.

  52. And in the garden, a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid.

  53. So because of the Jewish day of preparation,

  54. since the tomb was close at hand,

  55. they laid Jesus there.

  56. This is God's Word.

  57. Let's ask for His help.

  58. Father, we're confident of Your help,

  59. because You sent Your Son to us,

  60. for us.

  61. You've given us Your written Word,

  62. that we might know You through knowing Him.

  63. By Your Spirit sent to us now,

  64. would You give us eyes to see Him,

  65. ears to hear Your Word as You would have us to?

  66. Oh, we need Your help for that.

  67. Help the one who speaks and the ones who listen.

  68. We need it.

  69. And ask for it in Jesus' name.

  70. Amen.

  71. Death just seems to keep coming.

  72. I feel like it's in charge sometimes.

  73. That's what a 90-year-old woman

  74. at a nearby retirement community told me this week.

  75. She wanted to talk about her grief

  76. that just seems to be compounding.

  77. She's had a lot of loss in her life,

  78. so much so that sometimes in her grief,

  79. she laughs and chuckles as she talks

  80. to keep from crying too much.

  81. She's lost a husband,

  82. multiple children,

  83. many, many friends.

  84. Just last week,

  85. a friend she's had for 75 years.

  86. Some of you aren't old enough

  87. to have had a friend 75 years.

  88. Death just seems to keep coming.

  89. Too soon, we sometimes say.

  90. Isn't it almost always too soon

  91. when it's someone you love?

  92. Maybe it is in charge.

  93. Maybe you felt like that.

  94. Maybe you get that uncomfortable feeling

  95. in a graveyard or cemetery.

  96. Like there's an enemy

  97. that you can't quite see

  98. and you don't know how to defeat.

  99. It's surrounding you somehow.

  100. Maybe you feel that way in hospitals

  101. or doctor's offices

  102. or some other place

  103. where death has tragically struck your life

  104. or your family.

  105. Sometimes maybe feel alone there

  106. or overwhelmed

  107. or afraid.

  108. perhaps of all of the wonderful angles

  109. that we've gotten to see

  110. Jesus' cross from,

  111. the most obvious one,

  112. what's happening,

  113. is that Jesus dies

  114. on the cross.

  115. The Lord of life

  116. encounters death.

  117. And we need to see this.

  118. We need to see how this battle goes

  119. when that happens

  120. because death

  121. is a formidable foe for us.

  122. Yes?

  123. It feels like it keeps coming.

  124. It feels like there's no way to avoid it.

  125. And so John gives us here

  126. as Jesus dies

  127. several final perspectives

  128. on this crucified king

  129. and all of them

  130. show us another wonderful facet

  131. of our king.

  132. Want us to consider his death again this morning?

  133. We'll do it again Thursday

  134. and again Friday, by the way.

  135. It's that important.

  136. And you know what it'll do in your heart

  137. if you keep doing that this week?

  138. It'll make you long for Easter.

  139. Anybody excited for Easter?

  140. It's because I got you real sad there

  141. for a few minutes.

  142. You wanted to breathe.

  143. But you'll start longing.

  144. You'll long for life.

  145. Let's get some glimpses of the crucified king.

  146. First, eyewitness testimony.

  147. Likely from John himself

  148. who's writing,

  149. oh, it's fine if it's someone else

  150. who was there.

  151. Jesus dies on Friday, remember,

  152. the day before the Sabbath.

  153. And this is a special Sabbath

  154. because it's during the Passover feast.

  155. So it's a big deal.

  156. The Jews don't want bodies on the cross

  157. on such a special day

  158. because bodies on the cross are cursed, right?

  159. In fact, it brings a curse on the whole land.

  160. And so they went,

  161. get those bodies off of there.

  162. They want to hasten their deaths

  163. and get them out of the way.

  164. So the Roman soldiers break the legs

  165. of the two thieves that are crucified

  166. on either side of Jesus,

  167. breaking the shin bone

  168. so that you can no longer push up

  169. to get air and thus you die quickly.

  170. Archaeologists have unearthed bodies

  171. of crucifixion victims from the first century

  172. and seen those crushed shin bones.

  173. But then as the witness looks on,

  174. the soldiers come to Jesus

  175. and they realize something different.

  176. What's different about Jesus?

  177. He's already dead.

  178. Perhaps faster than the others

  179. because of the beating that he's taken,

  180. the torments of hell that he's endured,

  181. that would do it.

  182. Perhaps also because he's handed his spirit

  183. over to his father.

  184. Whatever the reason,

  185. they don't break his legs.

  186. But don't be confused.

  187. These executioners,

  188. this special group of Roman soldiers

  189. doing the crucifixion,

  190. these are death experts.

  191. Okay?

  192. That's their line of work.

  193. Leaving no doubt,

  194. one thrusts his spear

  195. into Jesus' side

  196. and John looks on

  197. as blood and water

  198. flow out separately from his side.

  199. There are multiple medical explanations

  200. for this,

  201. but all of them agree

  202. that what's being witnessed

  203. is a confirmation

  204. of his death.

  205. Jesus is really dead.

  206. This is what the witness primarily

  207. is telling us.

  208. Why it's so important

  209. that he's telling the truth,

  210. right?

  211. That Jesus has really encountered

  212. and endured death.

  213. That common human enemy,

  214. that common human experience,

  215. he experienced

  216. for us

  217. in our place,

  218. paying the wages of sin,

  219. right?

  220. Death.

  221. He died.

  222. The word

  223. became real flesh,

  224. real human flesh,

  225. really lived on this earth

  226. and really

  227. died.

  228. He didn't dodge

  229. any battle.

  230. He didn't avoid

  231. any enemy.

  232. He didn't shortcut

  233. any suffering.

  234. He didn't swoon,

  235. as some have said,

  236. and resuscitate

  237. in the cool tomb.

  238. That's a theory

  239. that develops quickly

  240. after Jesus' death.

  241. You know why?

  242. Because he's alive.

  243. And there's so many people

  244. who see him alive,

  245. so many appearances

  246. that they say,

  247. well,

  248. he's obviously alive.

  249. I don't know.

  250. Maybe

  251. he never died.

  252. That must have been

  253. what happened,

  254. some say.

  255. No way,

  256. the witness says.

  257. Many saw the blood

  258. and water,

  259. the pierced side.

  260. There's so many other issues

  261. with a swoon theory,

  262. but it is vital

  263. for us to know

  264. that Jesus died

  265. and was buried.

  266. Paul tells us

  267. that's at the heart

  268. of the gospel, right?

  269. Right there in the early creed

  270. that we professed

  271. earlier this morning,

  272. he was crucified,

  273. dead,

  274. and buried.

  275. Now, many have seen

  276. in the blood and water

  277. flowing from Jesus' side

  278. those clear signs

  279. of life

  280. and cleansing

  281. and purification.

  282. Michael and Lindsay

  283. just sang about that

  284. so beautifully.

  285. Let the water

  286. and the blood

  287. from thy riven side

  288. which flowed

  289. be of sin

  290. the double cure.

  291. Cleanse me

  292. from its guilt

  293. and power.

  294. That's the picture

  295. as God meets

  296. his people's needs

  297. from the rock

  298. that is struck,

  299. the rock of Christ.

  300. John doesn't elaborate

  301. on that.

  302. The witness

  303. is focused

  304. on testifying

  305. that Jesus

  306. is really,

  307. truly,

  308. certainly

  309. dead.

  310. But the Old Testament

  311. background

  312. will lend credence

  313. to seeing

  314. the spiritual picture

  315. as well.

  316. See,

  317. these very unusual

  318. circumstances

  319. at the cross

  320. directly fulfill

  321. Scripture written

  322. hundreds of years

  323. before these events.

  324. We keep

  325. encountering

  326. every week

  327. it has been

  328. another Old Testament

  329. Scripture,

  330. many weeks

  331. multiple ones

  332. being fulfilled.

  333. This is not

  334. a defeated

  335. out of control

  336. imposter

  337. Messiah,

  338. right?

  339. But a God

  340. showing us

  341. this plan

  342. to rescue us

  343. at the cost

  344. of his own

  345. son

  346. has been

  347. their joint

  348. commitment

  349. since before

  350. they created

  351. the world

  352. together.

  353. And this

  354. Jesus is

  355. the long-awaited

  356. Christ,

  357. the promised

  358. Messiah King,

  359. the anointed

  360. one.

  361. It's Jesus.

  362. The first

  363. Scripture cited

  364. is not one

  365. of his bones

  366. will be broken.

  367. That may refer

  368. to Psalm 34

  369. where the righteous

  370. one has no bones

  371. broken.

  372. That fits

  373. certainly here,

  374. but perhaps

  375. even better

  376. is the reference

  377. to Passover.

  378. John has made

  379. this repeatedly,

  380. right,

  381. with the Lamb

  382. of God.

  383. All the way

  384. back to the Exodus,

  385. God institutes

  386. the Passover

  387. and talks about

  388. the Lamb saying,

  389. you shall not

  390. break any

  391. of its bones.

  392. Here then,

  393. I think,

  394. is biblical

  395. reason for us

  396. to see

  397. the blood

  398. flowing from

  399. Jesus

  400. as bringing

  401. life

  402. to others.

  403. You may

  404. know the story.

  405. Derek mentioned

  406. part of it

  407. earlier in the

  408. service.

  409. God has

  410. promised

  411. to send

  412. the angel

  413. of death

  414. to kill

  415. the firstborn

  416. son of

  417. every home

  418. in Egypt.

  419. That's a pretty

  420. scary promise,

  421. right?

  422. Especially if

  423. you're an Israelite

  424. living in Egypt

  425. as they did

  426. then.

  427. Especially if

  428. you are a

  429. firstborn son.

  430. That's

  431. scary.

  432. scary.

  433. But what

  434. does God

  435. tell his

  436. people?

  437. He says,

  438. kill a

  439. lamb and

  440. use a

  441. hyssop branch

  442. to put

  443. its blood

  444. up on the

  445. door frame

  446. of the

  447. house.

  448. And the

  449. angel of

  450. death will

  451. pass over

  452. that house

  453. with the

  454. blood on

  455. the door

  456. frame and

  457. let the

  458. child live

  459. because the

  460. lamb has

  461. died.

  462. Right?

  463. Jesus has

  464. already sat

  465. with his

  466. disciples just

  467. last night

  468. and he's

  469. told them

  470. that his

  471. blood would

  472. be shed to

  473. give life in

  474. the new

  475. covenant.

  476. That's the

  477. blood of the

  478. new covenant.

  479. And now we

  480. see here the

  481. picture of his

  482. sacrifice.

  483. What a

  484. beautiful picture

  485. when we think

  486. about the

  487. blood that has

  488. been shed for

  489. us.

  490. I love the

  491. reminder that

  492. this is of

  493. the finished

  494. work of

  495. Christ that

  496. he really

  497. fully

  498. finally

  499. saves us.

  500. The power

  501. of his

  502. blood that

  503. we were

  504. singing about.

  505. There's nothing

  506. stronger than

  507. the wonder

  508. working power

  509. of the

  510. blood that

  511. it would

  512. make us

  513. sons and

  514. daughters of

  515. God who

  516. we otherwise

  517. couldn't even

  518. come into his

  519. presence.

  520. Can his

  521. blood really

  522. do that?

  523. I'd ask you

  524. to imagine

  525. back to the

  526. Passover.

  527. What if I'm

  528. not sure?

  529. Pastor, what if

  530. I don't know

  531. all the answers

  532. to all of my

  533. questions?

  534. Well, imagine

  535. that that's the

  536. way you were

  537. as an Israelite

  538. family and you

  539. hear what Moses

  540. tells you to do.

  541. This is Yahweh's

  542. command and you

  543. think, I don't

  544. know, I've got

  545. some questions for

  546. Yahweh before

  547. tonight.

  548. I'm not really

  549. sure how all

  550. this is going

  551. to work out.

  552. And you're

  553. wrestling with

  554. it, but before

  555. you go to bed,

  556. you do kill the

  557. lamb and put the

  558. blood on the

  559. door frame.

  560. Or imagine,

  561. you're just

  562. really scared.

  563. I mean, you're

  564. not sure how

  565. this night's

  566. going to go.

  567. You can't even

  568. sleep.

  569. You're anxious

  570. all night.

  571. But before you

  572. go to sleep, you

  573. kill the lamb and

  574. put the blood on

  575. the door frame of

  576. your house.

  577. I want to ask

  578. you, were the

  579. firstborn sons in

  580. those houses full

  581. of fears and

  582. questions and

  583. anxieties, were

  584. they alive in the

  585. morning?

  586. Yes, they were.

  587. And it was not

  588. because of their

  589. clarity.

  590. It was not because

  591. of their confidence.

  592. It was because of

  593. the blood of the

  594. lamb.

  595. The power in that

  596. blood of that

  597. lamb.

  598. That is actually

  599. the good news of

  600. Jesus, isn't it?

  601. That while Passover

  602. lambs are being

  603. slaughtered inside the

  604. city of Jerusalem, he

  605. is the perfect Passover

  606. lamb with no blemish or

  607. defect, with no bones

  608. broken, being slaughtered

  609. outside the city, and he

  610. cries out what?

  611. It is finished.

  612. As he sacrifices his

  613. life.

  614. No more sacrifice

  615. needed.

  616. He gives his life to

  617. protect all who will

  618. place their trust in

  619. him from eternal

  620. death.

  621. You can count on it.

  622. The second scripture

  623. here quotes the

  624. prophet Zechariah.

  625. Zechariah, likewise,

  626. tells of salvation for

  627. God's people.

  628. I will pour out on the

  629. house of David and the

  630. inhabitants of Jerusalem a

  631. spirit of grace and

  632. pleas for mercy, so that

  633. when they look on me, God

  634. says, on him whom they

  635. have pierced, they shall

  636. mourn for him.

  637. As one mourns for an only

  638. child and weep bitterly

  639. over him as one weeps

  640. over a firstborn.

  641. Some common themes here,

  642. aren't there?

  643. On that day, the mourning

  644. in Jerusalem will be as

  645. great as the mourning for

  646. Hadad-Rim, and on that

  647. day, there shall be a

  648. fountain opened for the

  649. house of David and the

  650. inhabitants of Jerusalem

  651. to cleanse them from sin

  652. and uncleanness.

  653. This is a dark day, right?

  654. Just like the one we're

  655. reading about on Good

  656. Friday, because they've

  657. pierced God himself.

  658. The word made flesh.

  659. You know, remarkable

  660. prophecies, right?

  661. Because rarely is anyone

  662. ever crucified and

  663. pierced.

  664. But when Jesus is

  665. pierced on that day, a

  666. fountain is opened to

  667. cleanse from sin and

  668. uncleanness, and oh, how

  669. we need that fountain,

  670. don't we?

  671. For us, the fountain from

  672. Emmanuel's veins that we

  673. sang about to wash away

  674. with clean water.

  675. All our guilty stains to

  676. cleanse us from the guilt

  677. and power of sin.

  678. John says, look no further

  679. for that fountain.

  680. Come and mourn.

  681. It's right.

  682. Jesus is crucified.

  683. But as he dies, don't miss

  684. the life that flows from

  685. him.

  686. The cleansing and the

  687. forgiveness that results

  688. from his sacrifice for

  689. sins once for all.

  690. The witnesses here at the

  691. cross watching what the

  692. law and the prophets have

  693. foretold for centuries,

  694. right?

  695. Behold the Lamb of God who

  696. takes away the sins of the

  697. world.

  698. He sees it.

  699. Next we notice two men who

  700. get involved in Jesus' burial.

  701. Normally what would happen is

  702. that crucifixion victims would

  703. be left up on the cross for the

  704. vultures to pick at.

  705. And then eventually thrown in a

  706. common criminal grave called

  707. Gehenna.

  708. But Joseph, he's a connected

  709. man.

  710. He gets all the way to Pilate,

  711. doesn't he?

  712. Somehow on this day, all the way

  713. to Pilate and receives

  714. permission to take the body

  715. of Jesus.

  716. Maybe even more remarkable

  717. than that is that until this

  718. day, virtually no one knew

  719. that Joseph even followed

  720. Jesus, even cared about this

  721. guy.

  722. He was a secret disciple.

  723. Does that sound pretty cool?

  724. Secret disciple.

  725. Except the reason he was a

  726. secret disciple is that he was

  727. afraid that it would cost him

  728. personally, perhaps professionally,

  729. to follow Jesus.

  730. Joseph was a member of this

  731. Jewish ruling council that had

  732. just condemned Jesus.

  733. And now, all of a sudden, this

  734. fearful, secretive, self-serving,

  735. self-protective Joseph steps

  736. forward to spare the precious body

  737. of Jesus from the

  738. vultures and

  739. Gehenna.

  740. We don't know

  741. what all went on in Joseph's heart.

  742. What we do know

  743. is that the cross

  744. inspires

  745. bold discipleship

  746. where there has been fearful

  747. following

  748. of Jesus.

  749. We see the power

  750. of the cross

  751. to do in

  752. his life

  753. what nothing else

  754. had done

  755. to motivate Joseph

  756. out of hiding

  757. and into the service

  758. of King Jesus.

  759. And I love this part.

  760. I mean, think about this.

  761. Just

  762. imagine what this could mean

  763. for you.

  764. That God uses here

  765. resources

  766. and connections

  767. that Joseph has

  768. in part

  769. due to his weaknesses

  770. and sins

  771. and his fear

  772. of man.

  773. He's still influential

  774. and has access

  775. to power.

  776. He's still wealthy

  777. and has access

  778. to a new tomb nearby

  779. and in his abundant grace

  780. toward Joseph

  781. God says

  782. I've placed you here

  783. and I've given you

  784. access to these things

  785. to use

  786. for the king.

  787. Where has God placed you?

  788. And what has he given you?

  789. Would some of you

  790. sometimes describe yourself

  791. as a secret disciple?

  792. Sometimes because of fear?

  793. What relationship

  794. might God

  795. use

  796. for his kingdom?

  797. What resource

  798. might God

  799. ask you

  800. to consider using

  801. for King Jesus?

  802. Even now

  803. are you perhaps

  804. in a new season

  805. of life

  806. where there's opportunity

  807. where you've felt

  808. an outsider

  809. in rooms

  810. like this one

  811. for a while

  812. maybe?

  813. And you think

  814. I never really

  815. could be

  816. central in God's work

  817. and God says

  818. yes you can.

  819. That's the way

  820. I work

  821. with people

  822. like you.

  823. Where might God

  824. call you to go

  825. boldly

  826. because you begin

  827. to grasp

  828. the value

  829. of King Jesus.

  830. You say

  831. oh he's worth

  832. the cost

  833. whatever it is

  834. I don't know

  835. what it'll be

  836. but I'm going

  837. Jesus

  838. I'll be there

  839. for the king.

  840. Joseph teams

  841. up with

  842. Nicodemus

  843. God rarely

  844. sends his followers

  845. out alone

  846. does he?

  847. Remember Nicodemus?

  848. The teacher

  849. of Israel

  850. who had

  851. lots of questions

  852. for Jesus

  853. under the cover

  854. of darkness

  855. back in

  856. John chapter 3?

    John 3 chapter mention

  857. Nicodemus

  858. was really

  859. thrown off

  860. by the idea

  861. of being born again

  862. he had a lot

  863. of questions

  864. about that

  865. right?

  866. You could

  867. certainly

  868. call Nicodemus

  869. a skeptic

  870. about Jesus.

  871. He speaks up

  872. for him

  873. at the Sanhedrin

  874. once

  875. later in John

  876. but really

  877. we have no

  878. evidence

  879. that he

  880. believed

  881. in Jesus

  882. until now.

  883. I want you

  884. to try to

  885. put yourself

  886. in his mind

  887. for a minute

  888. just from

  889. what we know

  890. of him

  891. back in chapter 3

  892. Jesus had

  893. told Nicodemus

  894. that he

  895. Jesus

  896. would have

  897. to be

  898. lifted up

  899. on a cross

  900. like the

  901. snake

  902. in the

  903. wilderness

  904. in order

  905. for men

  906. to be born

  907. again

  908. to have

  909. new life

  910. in fact

  911. without that

  912. kind of

  913. new birth

  914. from above

  915. Nicodemus

  916. the one

  917. who knew

  918. so much

  919. would never

  920. even see

  921. the kingdom

  922. of God

  923. it seems

  924. that

  925. skeptical

  926. Nicodemus

  927. thought

  928. I believe

  929. that kind

  930. of crazy

  931. sacrificial

  932. leadership

  933. when

  934. I

  935. see

  936. it

  937. that's

  938. not

  939. the way

  940. kings

  941. and kingdoms

  942. work

  943. around

  944. here

  945. and now

  946. at the cross

  947. what happens

  948. all of a sudden

  949. the guy who's

  950. waiting

  951. he's in

  952. wait and see

  953. mode

  954. with this

  955. Jesus

  956. that he's

  957. talked to

  958. he sees

  959. the cross

  960. and it all

  961. starts

  962. falling

  963. into place

  964. Nicodemus

  965. is all

  966. in

  967. born

  968. again

  969. you might

  970. say

  971. 75

  972. pounds

  973. of spices

  974. so expensive

  975. trust me

  976. the honor

  977. of a rich

  978. man's tomb

  979. in fulfillment

  980. of Isaiah

  981. 53

  982. and these

  983. are spices

  984. fit for

  985. a king

  986. no one else

  987. in these days

  988. would have

  989. received

  990. that amount

  991. of spices

  992. for a burial

  993. except a king

  994. do you hear

  995. what Nicodemus

  996. is saying

  997. now

  998. there's the king

  999. this is a royal

  1000. burial

  1001. the king

  1002. of the Jews

  1003. the Messiah

  1004. even

  1005. in a graveyard

  1006. the king

  1007. even as he's

  1008. wrapped head to toe

1009. and placed in a tomb

  1010. the king

  1011. Nicodemus

  1012. doesn't know

  1013. what's coming next

  1014. does he

  1015. there's lots

  1016. of spices there

  1017. that wouldn't be

  1018. practically necessary

  1019. but like

  1020. Lazarus'

  1021. sister Mary

  1022. just a few

  1023. months ago

  1024. he sees

  1025. the value

  1026. of Jesus

  1027. and he honors

  1028. him the best

  1029. way he knows

  1030. how

  1031. listen

  1032. bring your

  1033. questions

  1034. bring your

  1035. confusion

  1036. bring your

  1037. skepticism

  1038. to Jesus

  1039. he welcomes

  1040. those

  1041. he welcomes

  1042. you

  1043. he wants to

  1044. walk with you

  1045. to the cross

  1046. and say

  1047. look what I'm

  1048. going to do

  1049. for you

  1050. bring your

  1051. questions there

  1052. to him

  1053. he dies on

  1054. the cross

  1055. to give you

  1056. new life

  1057. what a gift

  1058. from a self

  1059. sacrificing

  1060. king

  1061. quite a king

  1062. see there's one

  1063. more perspective

  1064. on this crucified

  1065. king that

  1066. is clearly very

  1067. important to

  1068. John

  1069. it's ours

  1070. it's yours

  1071. look back at

  1072. the witness

  1073. why does

  1074. John go to

  1075. such great

  1076. lengths

  1077. to shine

  1078. the spotlight

  1079. on the death

  1080. of Jesus

  1081. why does he

  1082. need us to

  1083. know it's an

  1084. eyewitness

  1085. who sees

  1086. exactly what

  1087. happens and

  1088. can confirm

  1089. this for us

  1090. that you

  1091. also

  1092. may believe

  1093. John is

  1094. urging you

  1095. as he does

  1096. in this whole

  1097. book

  1098. to see that

  1099. the true king

  1100. the promised

  1101. Christ

  1102. Christ

  1103. is Jesus

  1104. he invites

  1105. you to

  1106. see that

  1107. he really

  1108. suffered

  1109. and truly

  1110. died

  1111. that he

  1112. fulfilled the

  1113. scriptures

  1114. that he

  1115. obeyed

  1116. to the

  1117. end

  1118. but

  1119. it's more

  1120. than that

  1121. John's

  1122. inviting you

  1123. into more

  1124. than that

  1125. he's offering

  1126. that as

  1127. you believe

  1128. you will

  1129. have life

  1130. through

  1131. Jesus

  1132. see

  1133. dependent

  1134. faith

  1135. what he's

  1136. inviting you

  1137. into

  1138. it's not

  1139. mere

  1140. intellectual

  1141. ascent

  1142. to some

  1143. historical

  1144. realities

  1145. and teachings

  1146. about

  1147. Jesus

  1148. John often

  1149. uses the

  1150. phrase

  1151. believing

  1152. into

  1153. Jesus

  1154. because

  1155. it's

  1156. about

  1157. a

  1158. relationship

  1159. entering

  1160. into

  1161. this

  1162. relationship

  1163. with

  1164. Jesus

  1165. that's

  1166. what

  1167. John's

  1168. describing

  1169. for you

  1170. it is

  1171. a

  1172. relationship

  1173. of

  1174. grace

  1175. where

  1176. you

  1177. believe

  1178. in

  1179. him

  1180. not

  1181. merely

  1182. that

  1183. he

  1184. died

  1185. not

  1186. merely

  1187. that

  1188. he

  1189. died

  1190. as

  1191. a

  1192. sacrifice

  1193. for

  1194. sins

  1195. but

  1196. that

  1197. he

  1198. died

  1199. to

  1200. pay

  1201. the

  1202. penalty

  1203. of

  1204. your

  1205. sins

  1206. that

  1207. the

  1208. penalty

  1209. you

  1210. could

  1211. never

  1212. pay

  1213. and

  1214. so

  1215. bring

  1216. you

  1217. into

  1218. the

  1219. presence

  1220. of

  1221. God

  1222. he

  1223. pays

  1224. the

  1225. price

  1226. you

  1227. get

  1228. the

  1229. credits

  1230. it's

  1231. a

  1232. relationship

  1233. of

  1234. grace

  1235. where

  1236. you

  1237. believe

  1238. into

  1239. Jesus

  1240. not

  1241. merely

  1242. that

  1243. he

  1244. was

  1245. pierced

  1246. in

  1247. blood

  1248. and

  1249. water

  1250. flowed

  1251. out

  1252. of

  1253. his

  1254. body

  1255. but

  1256. that

  1257. his

  1258. blood

  1259. washes

  1260. you

  1261. clean

  1262. and

  1263. that

  1264. rivers

  1265. of

  1266. living

  1267. water

  1268. will

  1269. flow

  1270. from

  1271. you

  1272. as

  1273. you

  1274. are

  1275. the

  1276. one

  1277. who

  1278. receives

  1279. his

  1280. spirit

  1281. because

  1282. you

  1283. know

  1284. the

  1285. unique

  1286. king

  1287. the

  1288. king

  1289. who

  1290. gives

  1291. his

  1292. life

  1293. for

  1294. his

  1295. people

  1296. rather

  1297. than

  1298. demanding

  1299. they

  1300. give

  1301. theirs

  1302. for

  1303. him

  1304. it's

  1305. a

  1306. relationship

  1307. of

  1308. grace

  1309. where

  1310. you

  1311. believe

  1312. Jesus

  1313. not

  1314. merely

  1315. that

  1316. he

  1317. was

  1318. a

  1319. king

  1320. and

  1321. did

  1322. lots

  1323. of

  1324. wonderful

  1325. things

  1326. that

  1327. should

  1328. be

  1329. emulated

  1330. in

  1331. your

  1332. life

  1333. get to

  1334. work

  1335. do

  1336. enough

  1337. try

  1338. harder

  1339. but

  1340. you

  1341. believe

  1342. that

  1343. he

  1344. finished

  1345. all

  1346. righteousness

  1347. for

  1348. you

  1349. all

  1350. that

  1351. God

  1352. required

  1353. of

  1354. you

  1355. so

  1356. the

  1357. burden

  1358. is

  1359. off

  1360. of

  1361. you

  1362. and

  1363. yet

  1364. he

  1365. gives

  1366. you

  1367. his

  1368. spirit

  1369. so

  1370. that

  1371. you

  1372. can

  1373. do

  1374. the

  1375. good

  1376. works

  1377. that

  1378. he

  1379. has

  1380. prepared

  1381. personally

  1382. for

  1383. you

  1384. while

  1385. he

  1386. walks

  1387. with

  1388. you

  1389. in

  1390. his

  1391. name

  1392. for

  1393. his

  1394. glory

  1395. he

  1396. set

  1397. you

  1398. up

  1399. for

  1400. that

  1401. I

  1402. heard

  1403. someone

  1404. describe

  1405. this

  1406. believing

  1407. into

  1408. Jesus

  1409. as

  1410. boarding

  1411. an

  1412. airplane

  1413. some

  1414. passengers

  1415. on

  1416. an

  1417. airplane

  1418. understand

  1419. more

  1420. than

  1421. others

  1422. about

  1423. how

  1424. the

  1425. plane

  1426. flies

  1427. how

  1428. it

  1429. stays

  1430. up

  1431. in

  1432. the

  1433. air

  1434. right

  1435. perhaps

  1436. as a

  1437. result

  1438. some

  1439. are

  1440. more

  1441. fearful

  1442. than

  1443. others

  1444. maybe

  1445. you

  1446. felt

  1447. that

  1448. some

  1449. sleep

  1450. while

  1451. others

  1452. busy

  1453. themselves

  1454. with

  1455. work

  1456. but

  1457. everyone

  1458. who

  1459. by

  1460. faith

  1461. steps

  1462. into

  1463. that

  1464. plane

  1465. arrives

  1466. at the

  1467. same

  1468. destination

  1469. together

  1470. come

  1471. aboard

  1472. !

  1473. Believe

  1474. into

  1475. Jesus!

  1476. He

  1477. will

  1478. bring

  1479. you

  1480. home!

  1481. You

  1482. can

  1483. sit

  1484. back

  1485. and

  1486. relax

  1487. and

  1488. depend

  1489. on

  1490. him

  1491. and

  1492. he'll

  1493. get

  1494. you

  1495. there!

  1496. It's

  1497. why

  1498. he

  1499. died

  1500. for

  1501. you!

  1502. I

  1503. just

  1504. want

  1505. to

  1506. say

  1507. to

  1508. three

  1509. different

  1510. groups

  1511. of

  1512. you

  1513. this

  1514. morning

  1515. maybe

  1516. friend

  1517. who

  1518. has

  1519. never

  1520. seriously

  1521. considered

  1522. the

  1523. good

  1524. news

  1525. of

  1526. Jesus

  1527. would

  1528. you

  1529. see

  1530. Jesus

  1531. today

  1532. and

  1533. believe

  1534. in

  1535. him

  1536. and

  1537. find

  1538. life

  1539. forever

  1540. he's

  1541. the

  1542. king

  1543. who

  1544. dies

  1545. to

  1546. give

  1547. you

  1548. life

  1549. would

  1550. you

  1551. receive

  1552. that

  1553. today?

  1554. maybe

  1555. I think

  1556. there's

  1557. quite a

  1558. few

  1559. friends

  1560. who

  1561. have

  1562. for

  1563. many

  1564. many

  1565. years

  1566. of

  1567. your

  1568. life

  1569. you've

  1570. liked

  1571. the

  1572. idea

  1573. of

  1574. the

  1575. good

  1576. news

  1577. of

  1578. Jesus

  1579. and

  1580. so

  1581. you

  1582. hang

  1583. around

  1584. places

  1585. like

  1586. this

  1587. occasionally

  1588. won't

  1589. you

  1590. see

  1591. Jesus

  1592. and

  1593. believe

  1594. in

  1595. him

  1596. for

  1597. you

  1598. personally

  1599. you've

  1600. been

  1601. hanging

  1602. around

  1603. but

  1604. you've

  1605. thought

  1606. I'm

  1607. not

  1608. really

  1609. sure

  1610. why

  1611. I

  1612. need

  1613. him

  1614. embrace

  1615. how

  1616. dependent

  1617. you

  1618. personally

  1619. are

  1620. on

  1621. him

  1622. to

  1623. have

  1624. any

  1625. hope

  1626. in

  1627. the

  1628. face

  1629. of

  1630. death

  1631. what

  1632. else

  1633. would

  1634. you

  1635. hope

  1636. in

  1637. than

  1638. the

  1639. one

  1640. who

  1641. has

  1642. faced

  1643. it

  1644. and

  1645. conquered

  1646. it

  1647. and

  1648. then

  1649. there's

  1650. friends

  1651. here

  1652. who've

  1653. already

  1654. embraced

  1655. the

  1656. good

  1657. news

  1658. of

  1659. Jesus

  1660. won't

  1661. you

  1662. see

  1663. Jesus

  1664. today

  1665. believe

  1666. into

  1667. him

  1668. and

  1669. live

  1670. with

  1671. a

  1672. fresh

  1673. boldness

  1674. as

  1675. his

  1676. disciple

  1677. wherever

  1678. he calls

  1679. you to

  1680. follow

  1681. him

  1682. to

  1683. go

  1684. with

  1685. him

  1686. because

  1687. he's

  1688. worth

  1689. it

  1690. would

  1691. you

  1692. see

  1693. him

  1694. and

  1695. see

  1696. him

  1697. as

  1698. worthy

  1699. today

  1700. listen

  1701. he's

  1702. the

  1703. king

  1704. the

  1705. real

  1706. king

  1707. even

  1708. in

  1709. the

  1710. face

  1711. of

  1712. death

  1713. the

  1714. powers

  1715. of

  1716. darkness

  1717. don't

  1718. stand

  1719. against

  1720. king

  1721. Jesus

  1722. you

  1723. are

  1724. safe

  1725. only

  1726. in

  1727. him

  1728. I've

  1729. been

  1730. in a

  1731. lot

  1732. of

  1733. graveyards

  1734. as

  1735. a

  1736. tourist

  1737. kind

  1738. of

  1739. like

  1740. history

  1741. graveyards

  1742. are

  1743. good

  1744. places

  1745. to

  1746. go

  1747. as

  1748. a

  1749. pastor

  1750. you

  1751. end

  1752. up

  1753. there

  1754. quite

  1755. often

  1756. and

  1757. sometimes

  1758. I do

  1759. feel like

  1760. death

  1761. just

  1762. keeps

  1763. coming

  1764. like

  1765. it's

  1766. in

  1767. charge

  1768. so

  1769. I've

  1770. made

  1771. a

  1772. habit

  1773. when

  1774. I'm

  1775. there

  1776. in

  1777. a

  1778. graveyard

  1779. to

  1780. look

  1781. for

  1782. crosses

  1783. you

  1784. can

  1785. almost

  1786. always

  1787. find

  1788. some

  1789. kids

  1790. if

  1791. you

  1792. want

  1793. to

  1794. play

  1795. this

  1796. game

  1797. while

  1798. you're

  1799. being

  1800. a

  1801. secret

  1802. disciple

  1803. some

  1804. of

  1805. them

  1806. are

  1807. on

  1808. tombstones

  1809. Some

  1810. of

  1811. them

  1812. are

  1813. in

  1814. the

  1815. ground

  1816. themselves!

  1817. They're

  1818. reminders

  1819. to me

  1820. that

  1821. there's

  1822. a

  1823. king

  1824. who's

  1825. in

  1826. the

  1827. graveyard

  1828. who

  1829. has

  1830. really

  1831. encountered

  1832. death

  1833. so

  1834. I'm

  1835. not

  1836. alone

  1837. when

  1838. I

  1839. feel

  1840. overwhelmed

  1841. and

  1842. alone

  1843. because

  1844. no

  1845. one

  1846. else

  1847. can

  1848. enter

  1849. death

  1850. with

  1851. you

  1852. but

  1853. Jesus

  1854. does

  1855. you'll

  1856. still

  1857. be

  1858. united

  1859. to

  1860. him

  1861. on

  1862. his

  1863. plane

  1864. when

  1865. you

  1866. die

  1867. those

  1868. crosses

  1869. are

  1870. reminders

  1871. to

  1872. me

  1873. that

  1874. death

  1875. is

  1876. not

  1877. in

  1878. fact

  1879. in

  1880. charge

  1881. is

  1882. not

  1883. the

  1884. king

  1885. because

  1886. this

  1887. king

  1888. is

  1889. always

  1890. in

  1891. control

  1892. and

  1893. actually

  1894. conquers

  1895. death

  1896. spoiler

  1897. alert

  1898. for next

  1899. week

  1900. I am

  1901. so

  1902. sorry

  1903. if

  1904. you

  1905. were

  1906. waiting

  1907. till

  1908. we

  1909. got

  1910. to

  1911. chapter

  1912. 20

  1913. and

  1914. what

  1915. happens

  1916. next

  1917. week

  1918. I

  1919. know

  1920. that

  1921. is

  1922. most

  1923. of

  1924. you

  1925. but

  1926. this

  1927. king

  1928. will

  1929. rise

  1930. victorious

  1931. saying

  1932. and

  1933. enabling

  1934. us

  1935. to

  1936. say

  1937. where

  1938. oh

  1939. death

  1940. is

  1941. your

  1942. victory

  1943. where

  1944. oh

  1945. death

  1946. is

  1947. your

  1948. sting

  1949. because

  1950. our

  1951. sin

  1952. is

  1953. forgiven

  1954. and

  1955. our

  1956. God

  1957. is

  1958. restored

  1959. and

  1960. we

  1961. no

  1962. longer

  1963. have

  1964. an

  1965. enemy

  1966. to

  1967. fear

  1968. because

  1969. even

  1970. death

  1971. is a

  1972. defeated

  1973. foe

  1974. even

  1975. when it

  1976. feels

  1977. like

  1978. he

  1979. has

  1980. the

  1981. upper

  1982. hand

  1983. I've

  1984. told you

  1985. before

  1986. of the

  1987. painting

  1988. entitled

  1989. Checkmate

  1990. this

  1991. painting

  1992. once

  1993. hung

  1994. in

  1995. the

  1996. Louvre

  1997. in

  1998. Paris

  1999. you'll

  2000. see this

  2001. young

  2002. man

  2003. playing

  2004. chess

  2005. against

  2006. the

  2007. devil

  2008. he's

  2009. looking

  2010. pretty

  2011. hopeless

  2012. the

  2013. devil

  2014. grim

  2015. grins

  2016. smugly

  2017. he's

  2018. got him

  2019. where he

  2020. wants him

  2021. he's

  2022. got him

  2023. stuck

  2024. in

  2025. Checkmate

  2026. years

  2027. after

  2028. Frederick

  2029. Moritz

  2030. Auguste

  2031. Wretch

  2032. painted

  2033. Checkmate

  2034. an

  2035. international

  2036. chess

  2037. master

  2038. stopped

  2039. and stared

  2040. at the

  2041. painting

  2042. particularly

  2043. the chess

  2044. board

  2045. and he

  2046. said it's

  2047. not

  2048. true

  2049. it's

  2050. not

  2051. true

  2052. the

  2053. king

  2054. still

  2055. has

  2056. another

  2057. move

  2058. maybe

  2059. death

  2060. feels

  2061. overpowering

  2062. foreboding

  2063. it's

  2064. coming

  2065. it's

  2066. going to

  2067. have

  2068. the

  2069. last

  2070. laugh

  2071. in

  2072. your

  2073. life

  2074. if you

  2075. feel

  2076. that way

  2077. this

  2078. morning

  2079. I want

  2080. you to

  2081. know

  2082. it's

  2083. not

  2084. true

  2085. it's

  2086. not

  2087. it

  2088. has

  2089. met

  2090. its

  2091. match

  2092. in

  2093. king

  2094. jesus

  2095. king

  2096. jesus

  2097. encounters

  2098. death

  2099. head

  2100. on

  2101. and while

  2102. on

  2103. friday

  2104. night

  2105. it looks

  2106. for all

  2107. the world

  2108. like he's

  2109. defeated

  2110. rest assured

  2111. !

  2112. he

  2113. is

  2114. the

  2115. king

  2116. and

  2117. come

  2118. back

  2119. sunday

  2120. because

  2121. the

  2122. king

  2123. has

  2124. another

  2125. move

  2126. let's

  2127. pray

  2128. jesus

  2129. we

  2130. worship

  2131. you

  2132. for

  2133. that

  2134. we're

  2135. so

  2136. grateful

  2137. that

  2138. you
