  1. You are listening to a message from Southwood Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama.

  2. ! Our passion is to experience and express grace. Join us.

  3. What a joy to hear you all sing. In case you haven't noticed it yet, that's our story around here.

  4. It's life and hope and grace found not in ourselves,

  5. but in our crucified and risen Savior, Jesus Christ. That's all we got, okay? That's all you're

  6. going to hear. It's not going to get any better than that, even though I will take more than 10

  7. minutes to talk about it. See, I only talked for two minutes this morning at the sunrise service,

  8. so you should have come earlier because this time it takes me longer to say the same thing.

  9. But that's okay, right? Because y'all wanted to hear me talk about Jesus a little bit, right?

  10. That's what we came for. Is that okay? Please say yes. Yes. Okay. Maybe. What a joy that is.

  11. That it's not that y'all specifically want to hear me talk about Jesus, but that I get the privilege of

  12. telling people I love about God who loves them. Man, what a joy. I get that privilege regularly,

  13. and especially on Easter, we get a chance to say He's here, and we're hearing from Him because He's with us.

  14. That's why we've been studying through the book of John over the last years

  15. to encounter Jesus Himself through the eyes of His closest friend. Now, nearly everyone in the world

  16. believes that Jesus lived. That's true for almost everyone. In fact, most people acknowledge that

  17. His life was a turning point in world history where we even count years before His birth and after His birth.

  18. Many have observed that His life fulfilled many prophecies that were written hundreds of years

  19. before His birth. Statisticians tell us that the odds of one person fulfilling even just 48 of these

  20. prophecies are something like 1 in 10 to the 157th power. It looks something like that. I don't do great

  21. with math, but it means it's rather unlikely. And scholars estimate that Jesus fulfilled over 300,

  22. not 48, but over 300 such prophecies. But the one of those that people have the most trouble

  23. believing He fulfilled is the one we're specifically talking about today. Some people actually believe

  24. not just that Jesus lived, but that He lived twice, that He walked out of the grave. That may seem crazy,

  25. but I'd suggest to you this morning each of us has to decide what we're going to do with Jesus.

  26. What do we believe about Him? He's such an influential figure. He's one who, from what we're told,

  27. invites us to be a part of something history-changing, life-changing, bigger than ourselves.

  28. Don't we long to be a part of something bigger than ourselves? What are we going to do with Jesus?

  29. What would the ramifications be for our world and for our lives if He did rise from the dead,

  30. if He did live twice, if He does live now? What difference does that make?

  31. I'd invite you to consider that with me as we consider John's first story of the risen Jesus.

  32. Jesus. Many in these first 19 chapters we've studied have encountered Jesus,

  33. but now He's died on a cross. He's been confirmed dead by Romans and Jews. He's been buried.

  34. And this first Easter morning will be the first encounter with Jesus newly alive.

  35. Follow along as I read the first 18 verses of John 20. This is God's Word.

  36. I'm going to read from the Gospel of John, actually, not from Revelation chapter 20.

    Revelation 20 chapter mention

  37. That was about to be really interesting.

  38. Now on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early while it was still dark

  39. and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb.

  40. So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved,

  41. and said to them,

  42. They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid Him.

  43. So Peter went out with the other disciple, and they were going toward the tomb.

  44. Both of them were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first.

  45. And stooping to look in, he saw the linen cloths lying there, but he did not go in.

  46. Then Simon Peter came, following Him, and went into the tomb.

  47. He saw the linen cloths lying there, and the face cloth, which had been on Jesus' head,

  48. not lying with the linen cloths, but folded up in a place by itself.

  49. Then the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went in,

  50. and he saw and believed.

  51. For as yet they did not understand the Scripture that He must rise from the dead.

  52. And then the disciples went back to their homes.

  53. But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb.

  54. And as she wept, she stooped to look into the tomb.

  55. And she saw two angels in white sitting where the body of Jesus had lain,

  56. one at the head and one at the feet.

  57. They said to her, Woman, why are you weeping?

  58. She said to them, They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid Him.

  59. Having said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing.

  60. But she did not know that it was Jesus.

  61. Jesus said to her, Woman, why are you weeping?

  62. Whom are you seeking?

  63. Supposing Him to be the gardener, she said to Him,

  64. Sir, if you have carried Him away, tell me where you have laid Him, and I will take Him away.

  65. Jesus said to her,

  66. Mary.

  67. Mary.

  68. She turned and said to Him in Aramaic,

  69. Rabboni, which means teacher.

  70. Jesus said to her, Do not cling to Me,

  71. for I have not yet ascended to the Father,

  72. but go to My brothers and say to them,

  73. I am ascending to My Father and your Father,

  74. to My God and your God.

  75. Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples,

  76. I have seen the Lord,

  77. and that He had said these things to her.

  78. Pray with me.

  79. God, we need Your help this morning.

  80. You sent Mary to tell.

  81. You've sent me to tell of this.

  82. You've sent us to tell.

  83. And we need help to know, to understand, to believe, to be changed.

  84. We ask for Your Spirit to speak through Your Word to our hearts.

  85. That we might not just hunt some eggs and dress up and take some pictures,

  86. but that we might meet Jesus,

  87. knowing that we'll never be the same if we do.

  88. And so we ask it in His name.

  89. Amen.

  90. Amen.

  91. John knows how to set a grand stage.

  92. He opens His book with,

  93. in the beginning.

  94. And He then proceeds to tell,

  95. not about the creation of the earth,

  96. that's the one that starts that way back in Genesis,

  97. but about the Creator of the earth.

  98. The One who spoke light into darkness

  99. was coming to shine light into darkness.

  100. darkness.

  101. Darkness, see,

  102. because right after that Genesis account of creation,

  103. we see Adam.

  104. Adam's the gardener put in that beautiful garden,

  105. and he messes up the world

  106. by preferring his own way to God Himself.

  107. Darkness enters.

  108. Death.

  109. Distance from God.

  110. These are the stories of human history.

  111. And now,

  112. John begins to show us something so grand

  113. that it could only be described

  114. as new creation.

  115. Notice just a couple details in verse 1.

  116. On the first day of the week,

  117. that's when it all started in the beginning,

  118. in a garden,

  119. out of darkness,

  120. life coming out of the tomb.

  121. Mary,

  122. I'll tell you more about her in a few minutes.

  123. She's a follower of Jesus.

  124. She encounters then a gardener

  125. coming this time,

  126. not to bring death to the world

  127. by His selfish rebellion,

  128. but rather to bring life to the world

  129. by His selfless sacrifice.

  130. Something is really different.

  131. New creation is happening.

  132. That's the stage John sets.

  133. So if you think

  134. that we're overblowing

  135. the scope of this story

  136. by wearing fancy clothes

  137. and singing happy songs,

  138. trust me,

  139. I can't do justice

  140. to how magnificent,

  141. how life-changing,

  142. how earth-shattering

  143. this story should be.

  144. But as grand as this story is,

  145. it is profoundly personal.

  146. Personal in two ways

  147. that I don't want us to miss this morning.

  148. We'll just look at those two things.

  149. First, notice the personal resurrection.

  150. I know that was a tough first point

  151. to figure out on Easter.

  152. Maybe a bit obvious

  153. if you read the passage.

  154. But the focus of this entire account

  155. is a person.

  156. Jesus.

  157. Why is His tomb empty?

  158. Where's His body?

  159. What's going on with His grave clothes?

  160. Who moved His body

  161. and where'd they take it?

  162. It's concern about Jesus Himself

  163. that sends Mary

  164. to find Peter and John,

  165. that sends them rushing to the tomb.

  166. And there,

  167. these two disciples view

  168. the linen cloths

  169. that Joseph and Nicodemus

  170. have carefully wrapped

  171. Jesus' body in.

  172. And John describes it for us

  173. in what can only be described

  174. as firsthand detail.

  175. This is what He saw.

  176. The word for saw

  177. used here is one that means

  178. analyzed,

  179. reasoned about,

  180. considered.

  181. The cloths and the face cloth

  182. folded up and lying separately.

  183. John starts thinking

  184. that they have the appearance

  185. of a body inside them

  186. having just disappeared.

  187. That's what the words mean.

  188. They're neatly still in place

  189. like think of a chrysalis

  190. that a butterfly

  191. has just come out of

  192. and you see where it was.

  193. And John starts thinking

  194. to himself,

  195. well, hold on,

  196. this is no work of friends

  197. who never would have exposed

  198. Jesus' naked,

  199. tortured body

  200. if they were taking it away.

  201. On the other hand,

  202. this is no work of enemies.

  203. No, grave robber

  204. would slow down

  205. to unwrap a body

  206. and then carefully,

  207. carefully lay the cloths

  208. right back in place.

  209. No way,

  210. not when grave robbery

  211. is a capital crime.

  212. It's not happening.

  213. Something otherworldly

  214. is going on here.

  215. John looks

  216. and sees

  217. and believes.

  218. This must be,

  219. he's seen too many of it.

  220. It must be miracle working

  221. Jesus again.

  222. He doesn't know everything.

  223. He didn't understand

  224. that the prophecies

  225. said a resurrection

  226. would happen

  227. but John believed

  228. Jesus was alive.

  229. Think about that.

  230. Jesus,

  231. the man we

  232. walked and talked with,

  233. the one that we

  234. ate with,

  235. we've been with him

  236. for three years.

  237. We just saw him

  238. hung on a cross.

  239. He's alive.

  240. He really

  241. bodily,

  242. bodily rose

  243. from the grave

  244. and appeared to

  245. hundreds of people

  246. in the days ahead.

  247. More to come

  248. next week.

  249. But that's the story

  250. of the Bible, y'all.

  251. That's the good news

  252. of Jesus.

  253. See,

  254. Christianity

  255. is about

  256. a person.

  257. I don't want to

  258. overcomplicate it

  259. this morning.

  260. His personal

  261. bodily resurrection

  262. is at the heart

  263. of the message

  264. that changes the world

  265. and keeps changing it.

  266. Just as John

  267. was careful

  268. last week

  269. to show us

  270. that Jesus

  271. was really dead,

  272. now he is careful

  273. to testify to us

  274. that Jesus

  275. is really alive.

  276. And that's a huge deal.

  277. It's really important.

  278. We'll just start

  279. with this reason

  280. because remember,

  281. we had real debt.

  282. Remember that?

  283. That we'd accrued

  284. against God?

  285. We had real debt

  286. that needed a real payment

  287. to be made

  288. for that debt.

  289. And Jesus said what?

  290. It is finished.

  291. Remember on the cross?

  292. Paid in full

  293. as he poured out

  294. his life

  295. on the cross.

  296. And now this empty grave

  297. is the receipt,

  298. if you will,

  299. for that payment

  300. that Jesus has made

  301. in full

  302. for our debt.

  303. Listen,

  304. when Jesus wrote

  305. that check,

  306. it didn't bounce,

  307. did it?

  308. That credit card

  309. did not get declined.

  310. The God of all,

  311. the Lord and giver of life,

  312. accepted that payment

  313. of the sin-bearing substitute

  314. and says,

  315. paid in full.

  316. We need it to be real.

  317. Real human flesh

  318. paid for real human sin

  319. and rose in a real human resurrection.

  320. A nice idea of resurrection

  321. won't do it.

  322. See,

  323. I want to make sure

  324. you hear how important

  325. this is.

  326. Because even many churches

  327. across the city

  328. and beyond

  329. will tell you today

  330. to think about ideas

  331. like resurrection,

  332. new life,

  333. hope for change.

  334. but they'll say

  335. the story of the resurrection

  336. that we just read

  337. is pretty far-fetched.

  338. It's a metaphor.

  339. It's a powerful idea

  340. with really no basis in reality.

  341. But don't worry,

  342. it doesn't need to be real.

  343. It's a powerful idea.

  344. I mean,

  345. right here,

  346. many of us

  347. go to this church

  348. and others

  349. just because

  350. we want our kids

  351. raised on the principles

  352. of Jesus.

  353. Because the moral structure

  354. is commendable.

  355. Because they really need it

  356. these days.

  357. But listen,

  358. Christianity

  359. is not about

  360. a set of principles.

  361. It's about a person.

  362. Jesus' resurrection,

  363. never more to die,

  364. gives you a true reason

  365. to care for this world

  366. and the people

  367. who live in it.

  368. Because they will truly last.

  369. It's not true

  370. that the motivation

  371. to moral living

  372. is just the same

  373. regardless of the reality

  374. of the resurrection

  375. and eternal hope.

  376. I mean,

  377. just prove that to you

  378. with a couple of examples.

  379. Think about that.

  380. Consider the motivation

  381. of a group of workers

  382. who are building a house

  383. that they're told

  384. that they will personally live in

  385. for the next 50 years

  386. after they finish it.

  387. versus their motivation

  388. if you tell them

  389. as they begin the project

  390. that right after they finish it,

  391. a tornado is gonna blow through,

  392. destroy the house

  393. and nobody will ever live in it.

  394. It's a different motivation.

  395. Consider a group of students

  396. working on a group project

  397. that they're told

  398. will never be graded.

  399. How hard you gonna work, kids?

  400. Pouring all your extra time

  401. into that one?

  402. What about the difference

  403. if you're told

  404. that the grades you make

  405. on this will be

  406. the only thing

  407. that will decide

  408. whether or not

  409. you get into college?

  410. All of a sudden

  411. there's a different motivation.

  412. Consider even the difference

  413. in a teenager

  414. getting dressed

  415. to go to bed

  416. versus getting dressed

  417. for pictures

  418. that will live on online.

  419. I assure you

  420. there's a difference.

  421. The motivation

  422. is different

  423. when the result

  424. really lasts.

  425. So Jesus,

  426. rather than

  427. tell us to care

  428. for the earth

  429. even though it will

  430. eventually implode

  431. and cease to exist,

  432. rather than tell us

  433. to be kind

  434. to people near death

  435. who won't exist

  436. afterwards,

  437. rather than tell us

  438. to pursue

  439. a just society

  440. even though it's

  441. an accidental blip

  442. on a cosmic radar

  443. and soon will disappear,

  444. Jesus says,

  445. care for the earth

  446. because I'm alive

  447. and remaking it

  448. into my eternal home

  449. with you.

  450. That's what Easter says.

  451. Jesus says,

  452. love your neighbors

  453. because they're made

  454. in the image

  455. of a God

  456. who's alive

  457. and they will live

  458. bodily,

  459. personally,

  460. forever.

  461. Jesus says,

  462. pursue justice

  463. on behalf

  464. of the oppressed

  465. because even your

  466. feeble efforts

  467. here are not in vain

  468. because I'm alive

  469. and I will set

  470. all wrong things

  471. right forever.

  472. Come with me

  473. in that,

  474. I'm doing an amazing

  475. work,

  476. he says.

  477. All of that is true

  478. because Jesus

  479. really rose

  480. from that tomb.

  481. If he didn't rise,

  482. we are still

  483. in our sins.

  484. We have no receipt

  485. to prove otherwise.

  486. We're to be pitied

  487. for living

  488. only for this life.

  489. Oh,

  490. if he didn't rise,

  491. you might as well

  492. live very different lives.

  493. But Christ

  494. has been

  495. raised

  496. from the dead.

  497. Nothing

  498. can stop God

  499. from bringing life

  500. to this world.

  501. He's recreating,

  502. right?

  503. Remember that Jesus

  504. and John

  505. is showing us

  506. what God

  507. is really like

  508. in the flesh.

  509. Here he is

  510. powerful

  511. to recreate

  512. light

  513. overcoming

  514. darkness,

  515. life

  516. invading death.

  517. That's why we celebrate

  518. Easter

  519. because there's

  520. real hope.

  521. If you want

  522. to make me cry,

  523. it's apparently

  524. easier these days.

  525. Someone said to me

  526. the other day,

  527. well,

  528. it's like two out of

  529. three sermons lately.

  530. Yeah.

  531. I don't think

  532. it's that bad.

  533. Don't check the tape

  534. on that.

  535. If you want

  536. to make me cry,

  537. just show me

  538. videos of

  539. soldiers

  540. returning from

  541. war

  542. to surprise

  543. their families

  544. at a sporting

  545. event

  546. or a school

  547. or wherever

  548. it is.

  549. It gets me

  550. every time.

  551. The personal

  552. impact of

  553. dad

  554. or sister

  555. or husband

  556. showing up.

  557. It's so powerful.

  558. I told you

  559. a few weeks ago

  560. of the young boy

  561. whose dad

  562. went off to war

  563. and he kept

  564. a picture

  565. of his dad

  566. beside his bed

  567. to comfort him

  568. when things

  569. were hard.

  570. But one night

  571. when it was

  572. really hard,

  573. that wasn't

  574. enough.

  575. And he,

  576. through his tears,

  577. said to his

  578. mother,

  579. I just want

  580. daddy to come

  581. out of the

  582. frame.

  583. He wanted

  584. his father

  585. there

  586. personally,

  587. bodily,

  588. not just another

  589. picture,

  590. not just a nice

  591. thought or an

  592. idea of dad.

  593. and we

  594. reflected then

  595. how wonderful

  596. it was that

  597. our heavenly

  598. father comes

  599. out of the

  600. frame to

  601. enter into

  602. our sorrows.

  603. That Jesus

  604. really suffers

  605. in this world,

  606. in the flesh.

  607. He doesn't leave

  608. us alone in our

  609. pain.

  610. But can you

  611. imagine how

  612. much more

  613. amazing,

  614. how much more

  615. life changing

  616. it would be

  617. if that young

  618. boy had just

  619. been told

  620. that his dad

  621. died in

  622. combat?

  623. How many

  624. more tears

  625. he cried?

  626. How much

  627. more desperate

  628. he was?

  629. And then a few

  630. days later his

  631. dad shows up

  632. and wraps his

  633. son in his

  634. arms and lifts

  635. him up high.

  636. Can you imagine

  637. how much that

  638. would change

  639. things if he

  640. not only came

  641. out of the

  642. frame but

  643. walked out of

  644. the grave?

  645. Not merely

  646. entering our

  647. suffering with

  648. us but conquering

  649. our greatest

  650. enemy for us?

  651. How much

  652. more does that

  653. change things?

  654. How much

  655. more joy?

  656. How much

  657. more life?

  658. How much

  659. more hope?

  660. Interestingly,

  661. Peter and

  662. John don't

  663. yet encounter

  664. the risen

  665. Jesus, do

  666. they?

  667. Not in this

  668. story.

  669. They do what

  670. you might do

  671. this Easter,

  672. they go back

  673. to their

  674. homes.

  675. See, they

  676. have the

  677. principles but

  678. not yet the

  679. person.

  680. and it's

  681. not enough to

  682. transform their

  683. lives, is it?

  684. Just wait.

  685. Mary gets

  686. to be first.

  687. This is one of

  688. my favorite

  689. personal encounters

  690. with Jesus in

  691. the whole Bible.

  692. I know some of

  693. you really love

  694. it too.

  695. Mary stands

  696. outside the

  697. tomb, still

  698. weeping.

  699. The others

  700. have gone

  701. away.

  702. Why?

  703. Well, some

  704. background may

  705. help.

  706. Jesus changed

  707. Mary's life

  708. completely just a

  709. couple years ago

  710. when he cast

  711. seven demons

  712. out from her.

  713. She's been

  714. following him

  715. since then.

  716. She was one of

  717. the very few

  718. friends at the

  719. cross when

  720. Jesus died with

  721. him to the

  722. bitter end.

  723. She is now

  724. clearly grieving

  725. the loss of

  726. Jesus' life

  727. changing presence

  728. with her.

  729. She's searching

  730. everywhere for

  731. his body.

  732. We all know

  733. tears like this.

  734. I want to

  735. encourage you to

  736. put yourself in

  737. the story here

  738. for a minute.

  739. It's a little

  740. bit hard for

  741. some of you

  742. because I know

  743. it's Easter and

  744. you thought maybe

  745. I'm safe coming.

  746. They'll be happy

  747. and they won't

  748. make me think

  749. about the hard

  750. things.

  751. I get it.

  752. But we've all

  753. cried tears like

  754. this at the

  755. grave of a

  756. loved one.

  757. Right?

  758. Feeling that

  759. ache of death

  760. and separation.

  761. Maybe the

  762. tears are tears

  763. of disappointment

  764. in a life that

  765. used to have

  766. this clear path

  767. that made sense.

  768. A future that

  769. was full of

  770. hope and

  771. purpose.

  772. It was free

  773. from death

  774. and war

  775. and injustice

  776. and now that

  777. life path

  778. seems gone.

  779. Maybe they're

  780. fearful tears

  781. for you.

  782. Tears of not

  783. being enough.

  784. afraid demons

  785. from my past

  786. will catch up

  787. to me now.

  788. Some combination

  789. of those tears

  790. makes Mary

  791. long for

  792. Jesus.

  793. Don't you love

  794. how as you read

  795. through these

  796. verses

  797. nothing will

  798. satisfy her

  799. except Jesus

  800. himself.

  801. Peter and

  802. John

  803. where's

  804. Jesus?

  805. two bright

  806. shining angels

  807. not even

  808. distracted by

  809. y'all.

  810. Where's

  811. Jesus?

  812. People are

  813. usually afraid

  814. of us.

  815. No, no,

  816. where's

  817. Jesus?

  818. Some

  819. gardener guy

  820. outside the

  821. tomb

  822. not paying

  823. attention to

  824. him,

  825. not even

  826. giving him

  827. the time

  828. of day.

  829. Where's

  830. Jesus?

  831. Not a

  832. beautiful

  833. longing.

  834. But her

  835. tears

  836. and her

  837. frantic grief

  838. keep her

  839. from recognizing

  840. Jesus

  841. until

  842. Mary.

  843. The good

  844. shepherd

  845. calls his

  846. sheep by

  847. name

  848. and they

  849. know his

  850. voice.

  851. There's a

  852. personal

  853. resurrection

  854. of Jesus.

  855. All of a sudden

  856. things change

  857. for Mary,

  858. don't they?

  859. That personal

  860. resurrection of

  861. Jesus means

  862. there's a

  863. personal

  864. relationship

  865. for Mary

  866. with her

  867. Lord.

  868. His one

  869. word

  870. changes

  871. everything.

  872. He lives

  873. my

  874. teacher,

  875. savior,

  876. Lord.

  877. Throws

  878. herself

  879. around him.

  880. See,

  881. because he

  882. lives,

  883. the demons

  884. that haunt

  885. Mary's life

  886. are gone

  887. forever,

  888. aren't they?

  889. He's already

  890. shown his

  891. power over

  892. them once

  893. and if this

  894. is no

  895. failed

  896. Messiah,

  897. no dead

  898. rebel,

  899. then he

  900. is the

  901. real deal

  902. and those

  903. demons

  904. are really

  905. defeated.

  906. Nobody

  907. else ever

  908. could,

  909. but this

  910. guy,

  911. if he's

  912. with me,

  913. I know

  914. who's in

  915. charge.

  916. He's come

  917. out of the

  918. frame and

  919. out of the

  920. grave,

  921. so I have

  922. hope instead

  923. of endless

  924. sorrow.

  925. I'm no

  926. longer most

  927. to be pitied

  928. with hope

  929. only for

  930. this life

  931. that maybe

  932. I'll have a

  933. little better

  934. day tomorrow,

  935. a little more

  936. comfort next

  937. time.

  938. No,

  939. no,

  940. no,

  941. eternal

  942. life,

  943. beyond the

  944. grave with

  945. all of

  946. those things

  947. removed from

  948. it.

  949. The good

  950. news of

  951. Jesus is that

  952. he really

  953. died to pay

  954. the penalty

  955. for all your

  956. sins and

  957. failures,

  958. that he

  959. really rose

  960. from the

  961. dead to

  962. show that

  963. God has

  964. accepted that

  965. payment in

  966. full and

  967. give you

  968. resurrection

  969. power.

  970. Death no

  971. longer holds

  972. you captive.

  973. It's a

  974. personal thing

  975. that Jesus

  976. has done.

  977. Pastor Andrew

  978. Murray once

  979. said,

  980. a dead

  981. Christ I

  982. must do

  983. everything

  984. for.

  985. A living

  986. Christ does

  987. everything for

  988. me.

  989. You get that?

  990. Can you believe

  991. that?

  992. A living

  993. Christ does

  994. everything for

  995. me.

  996. He's paid it

  997. all.

  998. He's with me

  999. now.

  1000. He's never

  1001. leaving me.

  1002. I can rest

  1003. in him.

  1004. That's true

  1005. that you may

  1006. still battle

  1007. demons because

  1008. we're all still

  1009. in this groaning

  1010. world.

  1011. But if you

  1012. trust this

  1013. resurrected

  1014. Savior, you're

  1015. united with

  1016. him today and

  1017. you will surely

  1018. be united with

  1019. him in a

  1020. resurrection like

  1021. his.

  1022. That's Romans

  1023. 6.

  1024. You'll never be

  1025. the failure that

  1026. you're afraid you

  1027. are.

  1028. You'll be the

  1029. glorious child of

  1030. God that he

  1031. created you to

  1032. be forever.

  1033. Your best days

  1034. are always ahead.

  1035. That's the good

  1036. news of Jesus.

  1037. Because he lives,

  1038. Mary's now known

  1039. instead of

  1040. insignificant,

  1041. distant from

  1042. the one who

  1043. loves her.

  1044. Jesus doesn't

  1045. preach a long

  1046. sermon, does

  1047. he?

  1048. Some of us

  1049. could learn

  1050. from that.

  1051. He doesn't

  1052. spend a lot of

  1053. time with her

  1054. explaining how

  1055. resurrection works,

  1056. the nature of

  1057. the new body,

  1058. glorified.

  1059. what does he

  1060. do?

  1061. He calls her

  1062. name.

  1063. Do you need

  1064. to hear Jesus

  1065. speak your name

  1066. this morning?

  1067. It really helps

  1068. if you're named

  1069. Mary.

  1070. You can't really

  1071. read yourself

  1072. right in.

  1073. Do you need to

  1074. hear him say

  1075. Joseph,

  1076. Gabriella,

  1077. David?

  1078. David?

  1079. Jesus sees you.

  1080. Jesus understands

  1081. your tears.

  1082. He knows your

  1083. sorrows,

  1084. yours specifically,

  1085. and he comes to

  1086. you to call you

  1087. his own

  1088. by name,

  1089. not forgotten,

  1090. no way.

  1091. you're not

  1092. abandoned,

  1093. not by him.

  1094. He will never

  1095. let Mary go,

  1096. even when she

  1097. has to leave

  1098. his side for

  1099. the mission on

  1100. which he sends

  1101. her.

  1102. It's okay,

  1103. she can't

  1104. because he's

  1105. with her.

  1106. Because he

  1107. lives,

  1108. she's no longer

  1109. alone.

  1110. In fact,

  1111. she has a new

  1112. community

  1113. instead of

  1114. isolation.

  1115. Notice what he

  1116. sends her to

  1117. announce to his

  1118. disciples,

  1119. to embrace

  1120. for herself.

  1121. tell my

  1122. brothers,

  1123. Jesus says,

  1124. that my

  1125. father is

  1126. their father,

  1127. that my

  1128. God is

  1129. their God.

  1130. Jesus'

  1131. resurrection

  1132. brings us

  1133. into a

  1134. family with

  1135. people of

  1136. all sorts

  1137. of stories

  1138. and none

  1139. of us has

  1140. it all

  1141. together.

  1142. None of

  1143. us has

  1144. it all

  1145. figured out.

  1146. I mean,

  1147. think about

  1148. that.

  1149. Are you

  1150. serious,

  1151. Jesus?

  1152. These

  1153. failures who

  1154. just abandoned

  1155. you,

  1156. who fell

  1157. asleep at

  1158. the wheel

  1159. when you

  1160. really needed

  1161. them,

  1162. who let

  1163. you down,

  1164. tell them

  1165. to buzz

  1166. off while

  1167. you win

  1168. the victory

  1169. and claim

  1170. all of the

  1171. glory for

  1172. yourself.

  1173. You tell

  1174. them,

  1175. Jesus,

  1176. nope.

  1177. Go tell

  1178. my brothers,

  1179. he hasn't

  1180. called them

  1181. that often,

  1182. go tell my

  1183. brothers that

  1184. you've seen

  1185. me and that

  1186. I say,

  1187. we're family

  1188. forever.

  1189. forever.

  1190. What grace

  1191. in Jesus'

  1192. words.

  1193. Remember,

  1194. Jesus is

  1195. showing us

  1196. what God

  1197. is like

  1198. in the

  1199. flesh.

  1200. We've

  1201. already

  1202. seen his

  1203. power to

  1204. bring life,

  1205. to recreate.

  1206. Now we

  1207. see part of

  1208. that new

  1209. creation is

  1210. remaking us

  1211. in his

  1212. image,

  1213. in his

  1214. family.

  1215. What do

  1216. we see

  1217. about God

  1218. here?

  1219. We need to

  1220. know this,

  1221. that nothing

  1222. can stop him

  1223. from being in

  1224. relationship with

  1225. you,

  1226. nothing.

  1227. That's why

  1228. he's made

  1229. the long

  1230. journey,

  1231. fought the

  1232. enemy,

  1233. paid the

  1234. price,

  1235. faced death

  1236. itself head

  1237. on,

  1238. emerged from

  1239. the grave

  1240. victorious,

  1241. and come

  1242. back to

  1243. call you by

  1244. name,

  1245. to call you

  1246. by name

  1247. and say,

  1248. I understand

  1249. your tears.

  1250. I know

  1251. you're

  1252. hurting.

  1253. I know

  1254. life is

  1255. hard.

  1256. I've

  1257. lived it.

  1258. I know

  1259. death looms.

  1260. I've felt

  1261. it.

  1262. That's why

  1263. I came

  1264. and I've

  1265. come back

  1266. for you

  1267. to wipe

  1268. all of

  1269. your

  1270. tears

  1271. away.

  1272. I don't

  1273. know all

  1274. of the

  1275. reasons you

  1276. may have

  1277. tears

  1278. today.

  1279. I will

  1280. tell you

  1281. after the

  1282. sunrise

  1283. service,

  1284. in just

  1285. a few

  1286. minutes,

  1287. people came

  1288. up to talk

  1289. to me about

  1290. tears from

  1291. miscarriage,

  1292. job loss,

  1293. death of

  1294. a loved

  1295. one,

  1296. depression,

  1297. debilitating

  1298. injury.

  1299. Y'all,

  1300. it's Easter.

  1301. And this

  1302. is what

  1303. we're sharing

  1304. with one

  1305. another about.

  1306. Saying,

  1307. well,

  1308. sometimes I

  1309. can't even

  1310. see Jesus

  1311. through all

  1312. the tears.

  1313. It's too

  1314. hard.

  1315. It's too

  1316. much.

  1317. I don't

  1318. know what

  1319. it is for

  1320. you,

  1321. but I know

  1322. this.

  1323. Derek said

  1324. it at the

  1325. beginning of

  1326. the service.

  1327. If Jesus

  1328. really walked

  1329. out of the

  1330. grave and

  1331. really calls

  1332. you by name,

  1333. then whatever

  1334. it is,

  1335. it's going

  1336. to be okay

  1337. in the end.

  1338. it will

  1339. be.

  1340. You can

  1341. trust him.

  1342. No matter

  1343. how hard

  1344. it is,

  1345. and it's

  1346. really hard

  1347. and you

  1348. don't have

  1349. to pretend

  1350. it's not.

  1351. He's got

  1352. this.

  1353. He's alive.

  1354. He's got

  1355. you.

  1356. Just a couple

  1357. of years ago,

  1358. the last time

  1359. I preached

  1360. this passage,

  1361. he showed up

  1362. in my life.

  1363. I was in

  1364. a season

  1365. of excessive

  1366. self-focus.

  1367. I was not

  1368. caring well

  1369. for others.

  1370. I could feel

  1371. it.

  1372. I was frustrated.

  1373. I was disappointed

  1374. in myself.

  1375. I was thinking

  1376. things like,

  1377. I know the

  1378. principles about

  1379. Jesus,

  1380. but Jesus

  1381. himself,

  1382. the person,

  1383. feels distant.

  1384. I was saying,

  1385. I need him

  1386. to show up,

  1387. but I'm afraid

  1388. he won't.

  1389. But he did

  1390. to remind me

  1391. that I was

  1392. his

  1393. and that he

  1394. had me.

  1395. Just last week,

  1396. I was

  1397. confessing

  1398. some sins

  1399. to a trusted

  1400. friend.

  1401. He listened

  1402. patiently,

  1403. took a while,

  1404. usually does

  1405. when I talk,

  1406. especially does

  1407. when I need

  1408. to confess.

  1409. When I finally

  1410. stopped,

  1411. he said

  1412. something like

  1413. this.

  1414. Will,

  1415. before I

  1416. share something

  1417. with you,

  1418. I just want

  1419. you to know

  1420. those things

  1421. in your heart

  1422. and life

  1423. are real

  1424. and awful.

  1425. Jesus went

  1426. to the cross

  1427. and paid

  1428. for them

  1429. completely.

  1430. And he rose

  1431. from the grave

  1432. because he

  1433. wanted you

  1434. to live

  1435. with him

  1436. even though

  1437. you struggle

  1438. like this.

  1439. Will,

  1440. he loves you

  1441. even when

  1442. you don't

  1443. feel lovable.

  1444. It was as

  1445. though

  1446. sitting at

  1447. Eggs Up Grill,

  1448. Jesus

  1449. called me

  1450. by name

  1451. and spoke

  1452. to me

  1453. words of

  1454. life

  1455. and grace

  1456. and peace

  1457. to my heart.

  1458. It was like

  1459. he spoke

  1460. of himself.

  1461. what a gift

  1462. that is.

  1463. Maybe you're

  1464. wondering this

  1465. morning if that

  1466. personal relationship

  1467. with Jesus

  1468. is real

  1469. or just

  1470. pastor talk,

  1471. church speak.

  1472. I'd encourage you

  1473. not to take my

  1474. word for it

  1475. but would you

  1476. ask Jesus

  1477. himself?

  1478. Would you

  1479. set aside

  1480. some time

  1481. to talk

  1482. with him?

  1483. To ask

  1484. Jesus if he's

  1485. real to speak

  1486. to you,

  1487. to read his

  1488. word,

  1489. maybe just

  1490. read through

  1491. the gospels,

  1492. Matthew,

  1493. Mark,

  1494. Luke,

  1495. John over

  1496. the next few

  1497. days to

  1498. encounter

  1499. Jesus.

  1500. It doesn't

  1501. take real

  1502. long,

  1503. honestly.

  1504. Ask him

  1505. to show

  1506. you who

  1507. he is.

  1508. Because I

  1509. mean here's

  1510. the deal

  1511. for me,

  1512. if Christianity

  1513. is a person

  1514. not a set

  1515. of principles

  1516. don't reject

  1517. it without

  1518. encountering

  1519. him.

  1520. In fact

  1521. if Christianity

  1522. is a person

  1523. not a set

  1524. of principles

  1525. don't claim

  1526. to embrace

  1527. it without

  1528. encountering

  1529. him.

  1530. You may be

  1531. in church

  1532. like this

  1533. every Easter

  1534. and you

  1535. may think

  1536. none of

  1537. this stuff

  1538. about Jesus

  1539. matters at

  1540. all.

  1541. Would you

  1542. ask him

  1543. to show

  1544. you who

  1545. he is?

  1546. Ask Jesus

  1547. to call

  1548. you by

  1549. name.

  1550. Ask him,

  1551. challenge him

  1552. to show

  1553. you how a

  1554. relationship

  1555. with him

  1556. can change

  1557. your life.

  1558. And it's

  1559. not just

  1560. you.

  1561. This is

  1562. why you

  1563. can be

  1564. assured

  1565. that

  1566. everything

  1567. no matter

  1568. what it

  1569. is

  1570. everything

  1571. will

  1572. ultimately

  1573. be

  1574. okay.

  1575. See because

  1576. he's alive

  1577. entering into

  1578. a relationship

  1579. with Jesus

  1580. believing into

  1581. him makes

  1582. you part

  1583. of something

  1584. bigger than

  1585. yourself

  1586. just like

  1587. you've been

  1588. longing for.

  1589. We saw

  1590. hints of

  1591. this in

  1592. bringing you

  1593. into community

  1594. but Jesus

  1595. says he's

  1596. making all

  1597. things

  1598. new

  1599. not just

  1600. you.

  1601. Listen to

  1602. Revelation

  1603. 21.

  1604. The dwelling

  1605. place of

  1606. God is

  1607. with man.

  1608. He will

  1609. dwell with

  1610. them and

  1611. they'll be

  1612. his people

  1613. and God

  1614. himself will

  1615. be with

  1616. them as

  1617. their God.

  1618. He will

  1619. wipe away

  1620. every tear

  1621. from their

  1622. eyes and

  1623. death shall

  1624. be no more.

  1625. Neither shall

  1626. there be

  1627. mourning or

  1628. crying or

  1629. pain anymore

  1630. for the

  1631. former things

  1632. have passed

  1633. away and

  1634. the one

  1635. seated on

  1636. the throne

  1637. says behold

  1638. I am

  1639. making all

  1640. things

  1641. new.

  1642. Remember

  1643. John has

  1644. given us

  1645. an account

  1646. of a new

  1647. creation

  1648. so life

  1649. starts to

  1650. flow doesn't

  1651. it?

  1652. Not just

  1653. to Mary's

  1654. soul as

  1655. wonderful as

  1656. that is

  1657. but to her

  1658. body as

  1659. her tears

  1660. clear and

  1661. she can see

  1662. Jesus.

  1663. Not only to

  1664. her but also

  1665. to the people

  1666. around her

  1667. that Jesus

  1668. sends her

  1669. to.

  1670. Not only to

  1671. all those

  1672. people but

  1673. but to

  1674. the entire

  1675. creation

  1676. groaning

  1677. since our

  1678. rebellion

  1679. broke it

  1680. to the

  1681. to the

  1682. world

  1683. that is

  1684. haunted by

  1685. death

  1686. that will

  1687. now be

  1688. flooded with

  1689. life

  1690. because God

  1691. has come

  1692. to live

  1693. here and

  1694. that's what

  1695. happens when

  1696. he's present.

  1697. Jesus will

  1698. make this

  1699. world new

  1700. with passionate

  1701. commitment

  1702. because he

  1703. like Mary

  1704. like you and

  1705. me has

  1706. shed tears

  1707. at the grave

  1708. of a loved

  1709. one hasn't

  1710. he?

  1711. He knows

  1712. those tears

  1713. he hates

  1714. death

  1715. he longs

  1716. to remove

  1717. all its

  1718. effects on

  1719. the world

  1720. and people

  1721. he lovingly

  1722. created

  1723. you can count

  1724. on his

  1725. commitment

  1726. to wipe

  1727. all of those

  1728. tears away

  1729. one day

  1730. he's going

  1731. to make

  1732. all things

  1733. new

  1734. he's going

  1735. to destroy

  1736. death

  1737. forever

  1738. swallow it

  1739. up in

  1740. his victory

  1741. make his

  1742. blessings

  1743. flow as

  1744. far as

  1745. the curse

  1746. is found

  1747. joy to

  1748. the world

  1749. the Lord

  1750. has come

  1751. and he's

  1752. coming back

  1753. alive

  1754. forever

  1755. never more

  1756. to die

  1757. that's our

  1758. hope

  1759. Jesus wipes

  1760. Mary's tears

  1761. away

  1762. with his

  1763. personal

  1764. presence

  1765. and then he

  1766. sends her to

  1767. share the good

  1768. news

  1769. what is it?

  1770. I've seen

  1771. the Lord

  1772. tears

  1773. are being wiped

  1774. away

  1775. mourning

  1776. is over

  1777. because death

  1778. has died

  1779. because Jesus

  1780. is alive

  1781. your relationship

  1782. with God

  1783. and then

  1784. your

  1785. relationship

  1786. with your

  1787. spouse

  1788. your

  1789. kids

  1790. your

  1791. parents

  1792. your

  1793. friends

  1794. your

  1795. neighbors

  1796. your

  1797. body

  1798. your work

  1799. your schedule

  1800. whatever it is

  1801. that's broken

  1802. and is tormenting

  1803. you

  1804. all of those

  1805. relationships

  1806. now have

  1807. hope

  1808. not in the

  1809. mere idea

  1810. or the

  1811. power of

  1812. positive

  1813. thinking

  1814. but in a

  1815. risen

  1816. savior

  1817. and the

  1818. power of

  1819. a life

  1820. giving

  1821. relationship

  1822. healing

  1823. God

  1824. who walked

  1825. out of

  1826. the frame

  1827. to enter

  1828. your pain

  1829. and walked

  1830. out of

  1831. the grave

  1832. to give

  1833. you life

  1834. forever

  1835. let's pray

  1836. Jesus

  1837. I just

  1838. ask

  1839. this

  1840. morning

  1841. that

  1842. you

  1843. would

  1844. encounter

  1845. each

  1846. of

  1847. us

  1848. that

  1849. you

  1850. would

  1851. speak

  1852. personally

  1853. and

  1854. powerfully

  1855. because

  1856. we need

  1857. to hear

  1858. your

  1859. voice

  1860. I do

  1861. all

  1862. of us

  1863. do

  1864. would you

  1865. assure us

  1866. of your

  1867. love

  1868. would you

  1869. remind us

  1870. of your

  1871. power

  1872. would you

  1873. comfort us

  1874. with your

  1875. presence

  1876. never ever

  1877. to leave us

  1878. thank you

  1879. that you're

  1880. alive

  1881. we rejoice

  1882. in that

  1883. and we

  1884. thank you

  1885. in your

  1886. name

  1887. amen
