  1. You are listening to a message from Southwood Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama.

  2. ! Our passion is to experience and express grace. Join us.

  3. ! We're talking this summer about our union with Christ,

  4. about this glorious truth that God has placed us in Christ and Christ in us

  5. and how that reality impacts every aspect of our lives.

  6. Each week so far as we've talked about being located in Christ,

  7. being defined in Christ, being blessed in Christ,

  8. we've mentioned every week the idea of being loved in Christ,

  9. but it deserves a closer look.

  10. One of the big life questions that we all ask is,

  11. how can I find love?

  12. So we're going to look at a bunch of passages this morning,

  13. but I want to start in Romans 8.

  14. If you've never read Romans 8, it's a magnificent chapter that begins with this declaration

  15. that there is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

  16. Forgiveness, pardon in union with Christ.

  17. But as Paul continues, he says, there's even more than that.

  18. We're not merely pardoned, but we're truly adopted into God's family.

  19. So that even when things are difficult in our lives,

  20. we can know that he is working them all for our good, right?

  21. We're going to pick up the reading at verse 31 of Romans 8,

  22. as the crescendo peaks.

  23. I could say this every week when we open God's Word,

  24. but these words I'm about to read could change your life.

  25. They could transform your eternity.

  26. They could impact every day that you have between now and then.

  27. Not my words, God's.

  28. Listen to the wonder of his love.

  29. What then shall we say to these things?

  30. If God is for us, who can be against us?

  31. He who did not spare his own son, but gave him up for us all,

  32. how will he not also along with him graciously give us all things?

  33. Who shall bring any charge against God's elect?

  34. It is God who justifies.

  35. Who is to condemn?

  36. Christ Jesus is the one who died.

  37. More than that, who was raised.

  38. Who is at the right hand of God.

  39. Who indeed is interceding for us.

  40. So who shall separate us from the love of Christ?

  41. Shall tribulation or distress or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword?

  42. As it is written, for your sake, we are being killed all the day long.

  43. We are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.

  44. No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.

  45. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers,

  46. nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth,

  47. nor anything else in all creation will be able to separate us from the love of God

  48. in Christ Jesus our Lord.

  49. Father, thank you for love like that.

  50. might we hear it and see it and feel it by your spirit.

  51. Might we know more of it and share more of it today.

  52. Come and work in each of our hearts.

  53. We ask by your word in Jesus' name.

  54. Amen.

  55. Amen.

  56. Look at those last two verses again.

  57. Secondly, I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers,

  58. nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth,

  59. nor anything else in all creation will be able to do what?

  60. To separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

  61. There it is.

  62. In Christ Jesus, living in that unbreakable union,

  63. you can never be separated from God's love.

  64. Inseparable.

  65. Nothing can do it.

  66. Not anything spiritual or physical.

  67. Not your sin.

  68. Not their sin against you,

  69. as a derogates to tell these women.

  70. Nothing.

  71. That's really the takeaway today.

  72. That's it.

  73. I can give it to you right here up front in three words.

  74. God loves you.

  75. That's all I got.

  76. God loves you.

  77. And some of you may be wondering,

  78. did he forget he's not talking to the nursery kids this morning?

  79. Why do we need to hear this again?

  80. I knew that before I came to church.

  81. 30 minutes for that?

  82. It's going to take him that long?

  83. It always takes him that long.

  84. Well, some of us need this message

  85. because in our particular tribe,

  86. sometimes we skip over love

  87. to focus on the legal realities of our salvation

  88. because we know well the enormity of the debt of our sin.

  89. And we see that.

  90. And we calculate in the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross.

  91. We add in his imputed righteousness.

  92. We carry the one.

  93. And we conclude that God has to forgive us

  94. and let us into heaven

  95. because we receive Jesus by faith alone.

  96. Now that is good stuff.

  97. And those are important legal calculations to be made.

  98. But sometimes we forget

  99. that all of that glorious theology

  100. is part of a love story

  101. where the God who made you

  102. for his own glory

  103. is redeeming you

  104. into relationship with him

  105. that is to be eternally delightful,

  106. full of love.

  107. Others of us need this truth

  108. because life is so bad

  109. that most days

  110. it feels like I must not be loved.

  111. Maybe you can relate to some of the women

  112. that Deer was sharing about.

  113. Maybe your story is different

  114. but life's hard enough and bad enough

  115. that it doesn't feel like the one in charge loves me.

  116. My kids are wandering away

  117. from what I want for them.

  118. My job is uncertain

  119. and it's unfulfilling anyway.

  120. My last doctor's appointment,

  121. my last bank statement

  122. was alarming.

  123. Life is so hard

  124. I'm not feeling the love, God.

  125. Still others of us need to listen

  126. because I know the reality of my heart.

  127. I live with myself.

  128. I'm deeply unlovable.

  129. If anyone knew,

  130. and God knows by the way,

  131. no way could he love me.

  132. For others,

  133. the people supposed to show God's love to us

  134. have been such a distorted reflection of it

  135. that we're not sure anymore

  136. about a loving God.

  137. Others of us can sense

  138. that we're living life

  139. looking for a spouse

  140. or a friend

  141. or a career

  142. to affirm us,

  143. to fill up our love tank

  144. and we keep coming up empty

  145. and at the same time

  146. crushing them in the process.

  147. Still others of us

  148. are living with a deep feeling

  149. that we were made to love

  150. God,

  151. family,

  152. neighbors,

  153. enemies,

  154. at least someone

  155. and we're not sure

  156. where to find resources

  157. to do that.

  158. We feel like we're empty

  159. all the time.

  160. I don't know where you are in that

  161. but God wants

  162. to look at every one of his children

  163. to hold your face in his hands

  164. and to say this morning,

  165. I love you.

  166. That means I have a deep affection for you,

  167. a high value of you,

  168. a deep commitment

  169. that is unshakable

  170. to work for your good.

  171. In fact,

  172. nothing can stop me

  173. and nothing can ever

  174. separate you

  175. from my love.

  176. Jesus didn't twist my arm

  177. with salvation mathematics

  178. when he went to the cross.

  179. No,

  180. it was because

  181. of the great love

  182. with which I loved you

  183. that I united you

  184. to Jesus

  185. in the first place

  186. that I made you alive

  187. together with him.

  188. It was because of my great love,

  189. Ephesians 2.

  190. And you remember last week,

  191. Ephesians 1,

  192. it was in love

  193. that I predestined you

  194. to be adopted,

  195. that I set out

  196. to welcome you

  197. into my family

  198. as a son

  199. or a daughter.

  200. Children of God

  201. by faith

  202. through

  203. Jesus

  204. Christ.

  205. God says,

  206. my love is not

  207. a momentary feeling.

  208. It's not a high value now

  209. that may go down

  210. when you have a bad day.

  211. It's not a one-time gift

  212. of grace,

  213. but it's a permanent

  214. commitment

  215. that I am working

  216. everything

  217. for your

  218. eternal good.

  219. You remember what we read

  220. earlier in this service?

  221. Love

  222. never

  223. ends.

  224. And you may think,

  225. yeah,

  226. not this love

  227. never

  228. ends.

  229. When you are in Jesus,

  230. nothing

  231. can separate you

  232. from God's

  233. love.

  234. Paul gets specific

  235. for us,

  236. not tribulation,

  237. our suffering

  238. and painful

  239. circumstances,

  240. not distress,

  241. our fears

  242. and anxieties,

  243. not persecution,

  244. Satan's attacks,

  245. not famine

  246. or nakedness,

  247. threats to our

  248. health and safety,

  249. not danger

  250. or sword,

  251. our harm

  252. or even

  253. our death.

  254. Nothing

  255. can separate you

  256. from God's

  257. passionate,

  258. personal,

  259. persistent

  260. love.

  261. It's as Sally Lloyd-Jones

  262. describes it so well,

  263. a never stopping,

  264. never giving up,

  265. unbreaking,

  266. always

  267. and forever

  268. love.

  269. If you

  270. and Jesus

  271. are inseparable,

  272. then you

  273. and God's love

  274. are inseparable.

  275. Amen?

  276. That's the truth.

  277. truth.

  278. I told you

  279. that's the message.

  280. That we need it

  281. in so many ways.

  282. That we

  283. struggle to embrace it

  284. for so many reasons.

  285. So I want to spend

  286. just a few minutes

  287. together

  288. asking God

  289. to help it

  290. sink deep

  291. into our hearts.

  292. That's what He wants.

  293. He wants us to know it

  294. and believe it

  295. and He's going to help us

  296. with that this morning.

  297. using many of our senses

  298. to embrace His love.

  299. First,

  300. hear His love.

  301. Hear it

  302. straight

  303. from the lips

  304. of Jesus first.

  305. John 17,

  306. Jesus is praying.

  307. He's talking to His Father

  308. on His way

  309. to the cross.

  310. I in them

  311. and you in me.

  312. He's talking about

  313. our union with Him.

  314. I in them.

  315. so that the world

  316. may know

  317. that You sent me

  318. and loved them

  319. even

  320. as You loved me.

  321. Father,

  322. You love

  323. them

  324. even

  325. as You love

  326. me.

  327. His one

  328. and only

  329. Son

  330. begotten

  331. and beloved

  332. by the Father

  333. before all worlds.

  334. The perfect image

  335. of the invisible God.

  336. Oh,

  337. how the Father

  338. loves Him.

  339. Can you even

  340. imagine

  341. how much

  342. He loves Him?

  343. He loves Him

  344. to the moon

  345. and back

  346. and beyond

  347. and listen,

  348. listen,

  349. so does

  350. He love

  351. you.

  352. Jesus says it.

  353. You're hidden

  354. in Christ.

  355. You're covered

  356. by Christ.

  357. You're united

  358. to Christ.

  359. so He loves

  360. you

  361. that way.

  362. Maybe this will

  363. help you a little

  364. get at what we're

  365. thinking here,

  366. what the Bible's

  367. describing.

  368. When it speaks

  369. of union with Christ,

  370. the Bible speaks

  371. of the analogy

  372. of marriage,

  373. right?

  374. In particular,

  375. that we,

  376. God's people,

  377. are the bride

  378. of Christ.

  379. So here,

  380. we would be

  381. loved by

  382. our father-in-law

  383. because He

  384. loves His Son.

  385. Let me very

  386. carefully

  387. preface this

  388. example with

  389. I love

  390. my in-laws.

  391. But I've got

  392. to tell you,

  393. if they met

  394. me on my own,

  395. I'm not sure

  396. they would love

  397. me.

  398. I mean,

  399. let's just be

  400. honest,

  401. I am an

  402. extreme extrovert

  403. who can talk

  404. until I wear

  405. them out.

  406. I am a

  407. planner with

  408. a tight

  409. schedule,

  410. especially if

  411. you travel with

  412. me on a trip

  413. where I've

  414. created the

  415. itinerary.

  416. I often

  417. don't love

  418. their animals

  419. the way

  420. that they

  421. do.

  422. Theoretically,

  423. hypothetically,

  424. I could drive

  425. them crazy.

  426. Amen.

  427. That was a

  428. big mistake

  429. on my part,

  430. wasn't it?

  431. Just softball.

  432. Well done.

  433. But they

  434. have never

  435. known me

  436. apart from

  437. their daughter.

  438. never.

  439. Never.

  440. Never.

  441. They have

  442. loved Christy

  443. since before

  444. she was born.

  445. So because

  446. she loved

  447. me,

  448. married me,

  449. is connected

  450. to me,

  451. they love

  452. me.

  453. And I really

  454. do believe

  455. that with

  456. Bob and

  457. Deb.

  458. love

  459. love

  460. but that

  461. loving

  462. in-law

  463. relationship

  464. is certainly

  465. not to be

  466. taken for

  467. granted,

  468. is it?

  469. In our

  470. broken world,

  471. sometimes in-laws

  472. resent you.

  473. Sometimes they

  474. tolerate you

  475. but they

  476. honestly feel

  477. that their

  478. child could

  479. have done

  480. better.

  481. No,

  482. no show of

  483. hands,

  484. but you're

  485. feeling it.

  486. Some of you

  487. know that

  488. truth.

  489. Not in

  490. God's

  491. family.

  492. No,

  493. no,

  494. no.

  495. Listen,

  496. the bride

  497. of Christ

  498. is actually

  499. a gift

  500. given to

  501. the Son

  502. by the

  503. Father.

  504. Remember how

  505. that kept

  506. coming up

  507. in our

  508. study of

  509. the Gospel

  510. of John?

  511. So God

  512. loved us

  513. but never

  514. apart from

  515. loving us

  516. in Christ.

  517. From the

  518. very beginning

  519. He united

  520. us in

  521. Him so

  522. that He

  523. could love

  524. us and

  525. we would

  526. never drift

  527. in and out

  528. of His

  529. good graces

  530. based on

  531. our failures.

  532. We've been

  533. connected to,

  534. covered by

  535. the perfect

  536. Son.

  537. Listen,

  538. I'm not making

  539. this up.

  540. Listen to

  541. Jesus again.

  542. He is the

  543. crown prince,

  544. the heir to

  545. heaven's throne,

  546. the apple of

  547. His Father's

  548. eye.

  549. You loved

  550. them even

  551. as you

  552. loved me.

  553. I've told you

  554. every week

  555. that union

  556. with Christ

  557. means whatever

  558. happens to

  559. Jesus happens

  560. to you.

  561. Now you

  562. believe God

  563. loves Jesus.

  564. Won't you

  565. believe that

  566. God loves you

  567. too?

  568. That's what

  569. He says.

  570. You can hear

  571. God's love for

  572. you from the

  573. lips of Jesus.

  574. You can hear

  575. God's love if

  576. you listen to

  577. the songs of

  578. His people

  579. in the Psalms

  580. where His

  581. steadfast love

  582. that endures

  583. forever is

  584. sung of

  585. hundreds and

  586. hundreds of

  587. times.

  588. You can hear

  589. God's love if

  590. you listen to

  591. His voice

  592. to the

  593. prophets.

  594. They speak

  595. to His

  596. beloved people.

  597. Jeremiah 31,

  598. I have loved

  599. you with an

  600. everlasting love,

  601. therefore I have

  602. continued my

  603. faithfulness to

  604. you.

  605. An everlasting

  606. love because

  607. you're precious

  608. in my eyes,

  609. Isaiah says,

  610. honored and I

  611. love you.

  612. I give men

  613. in return for

  614. you, peoples,

  615. in exchange for

  616. your life.

  617. Even when you

  618. have run away,

  619. that's what's

  620. going on in

  621. Isaiah, you've

  622. turned your

  623. back on me.

  624. God says, I'm

  625. going to run

  626. after you and

  627. bring you back.

  628. Listen to chapter

  629. 54, God says,

  630. with everlasting

  631. love I will have

  632. compassion on you.

  633. For the mountains

  634. may depart and the

  635. hills be removed,

  636. but my steadfast love

  637. shall not depart

  638. from you.

  639. My covenant of

  640. peace shall not

  641. be removed,

  642. says the Lord

  643. who thinks you've

  644. been perfect.

  645. no.

  646. Says the Lord

  647. who has compassion

  648. on you because

  649. you need his

  650. mercy and his

  651. grace.

  652. Do you hear his

  653. voice this morning?

  654. I love you.

  655. I love you.

  656. I love you.

  657. I'll never stop.

  658. Will you believe

  659. what he says in

  660. spite of what you

  661. feel, in spite of

  662. the circumstances

  663. screaming at you?

  664. I love you.

  665. I love you with

  666. an enduring,

  667. everlasting love,

  668. an unbreaking,

  669. always and forever

  670. love.

  671. But most of us

  672. need more than

  673. just words,

  674. don't we?

  675. I told you I've

  676. got plenty of

  677. words, so Christy

  678. hears I love you

  679. from me more than

  680. she can stand

  681. some days.

  682. Maybe you've

  683. felt what I know

  684. she has at times,

  685. something like,

  686. why don't you

  687. stop talking about

  688. it so much and

  689. actually do

  690. something about

  691. it?

  692. Show me!

  693. God won't stop

  694. telling us, but

  695. he will show us

  696. because he wants

  697. us to see

  698. his love

  699. too.

  700. How'd he do it?

  701. He came in the

  702. flesh, didn't he?

  703. For sake of time,

  704. let's just skip

  705. straight to the

  706. cross, okay?

  707. Where we already

  708. know we were

  709. crucified with

  710. Christ.

  711. We were really

  712. mysteriously united

  713. to him in his

  714. death, but he's

  715. the one who

  716. personally,

  717. physically suffered

  718. and died as he

  719. showed us the

  720. full extent of

  721. his love, as he

  722. loved us to the

  723. very end.

  724. Romans 5, 8

  725. reminds us that

  726. God shows his

  727. love so we can

  728. see it.

  729. He shows his

  730. love in that

  731. Christ died for

  732. us while we were

  733. still sinners.

  734. In other words,

  735. God sent his

  736. perfect son to

  737. rescue very

  738. imperfect people,

  739. to die in

  740. their place.

  741. How deep the

  742. father's love,

  743. giving his only

  744. son his treasure

  745. in order to make

  746. a wretch his

  747. treasure.

  748. The father turns

  749. his face away from

  750. the son of his

  751. delight so that

  752. wounds that mar the

  753. chosen one bring

  754. many sons to

  755. glory.

  756. See?

  757. Look!

  758. Behold what

  759. manner of love the

  760. father has given to

  761. us that we should be

  762. called the sons of

  763. God.

  764. Adopted, chosen,

  765. brought into his

  766. family because of our

  767. relationship with his

  768. son.

  769. This is why the

  770. Bible says the father

  771. sent the son.

  772. at just the right

  773. time so that we

  774. could be sons of

  775. God.

  776. Galatians 4.

  777. This is love.

  778. How do we see it?

  779. 1 John 4.

  780. Not even our own

  781. love for God,

  782. although I hope that

  783. we do love him,

  784. but that's not even

  785. really what love is.

  786. I mean, how could we

  787. not love God when he

  788. rescued us as orphans

  789. and lavished his grace

  790. upon us and making us

  791. his sons, heirs?

  792. Not that, but that he

  793. loved us and sent his

  794. son to pay the penalty

  795. to cover all of our

  796. sins.

  797. Survey the wondrous

  798. cross.

  799. See from his head,

  800. his hands, his feet,

  801. sorrow and love flow

  802. mingled down.

  803. Did e'er such love

  804. and sorrow meet

  805. or thorns compose

  806. so rich a crown?

  807. Have you looked at the

  808. cross of Jesus today

  809. to see his love?

  810. Have you spent an hour

  811. there lately at the

  812. foot of the cross

  813. just taking it in,

  814. letting his love sink

  815. deeply in?

  816. Have you let it be more

  817. than just a passing

  818. thing you've heard or

  819. you were to sense to,

  820. but actually starts to

  821. change your heart?

  822. I mean, just look at

  823. the ways we show our

  824. love.

  825. We show our love by

  826. waking up so that our

  827. spouse can sleep,

  828. by eating our kids

  829. broccoli so that they

  830. can focus on dessert,

  831. disadvantaging

  832. ourselves for the

  833. advantage of one we

  834. love, right?

  835. how much further does Jesus

  836. go to do that for you?

  837. Have you contemplated what

  838. it feels like when

  839. someone takes something

  840. that you hate for you

  841. to give you something

  842. that you love?

  843. And Jesus has done that

  844. with the worst possible

  845. thing, eternal separation

  846. from God and his love.

  847. And Jesus takes your

  848. separation to bring you

  849. back to him.

  850. God gave you his best

  851. when you were at your

  852. worst.

  853. He loves you.

  854. And the reason I'm talking

  855. about contemplating and

  856. meditating, slowing down

  857. with this is that God

  858. wants it to go beyond our

  859. ears and our eyes to our

  860. hearts through our whole

  861. beings.

  862. Puritan preacher Thomas

  863. Goodwin noticed a

  864. beautiful example of this

  865. one day as a father and a

  866. son were walking together

  867. down a street and he saw

  868. them coming towards him.

  869. They were just kind of

  870. walking a few feet apart

  871. when suddenly the father

  872. bent down and he grabbed

  873. his son and he swept him

  874. up into his arms and he

  875. hugged him and he kissed

  876. him and he told him I love

  877. you so much.

  878. He just held him for a

  879. minute while busy people

  880. passed by them on either

  881. side.

  882. And then he put him back

  883. down and they walked on

  884. together.

  885. And Goodwin said he looked

  886. and he realized that the

  887. boy was objectively,

  888. legally, just as much the

  889. father's son on the ground

  890. as he was in his arms.

  891. Right?

  892. But he subjectively,

  893. experientially felt the truth

  894. of his sonship, the

  895. relationship, the safety, the

  896. love, so much more in his

  897. father's arms.

  898. That's what Paul's getting

  899. at, I believe, earlier in

  900. Romans 8 when he talks about

  901. our adoption and helping us

  902. get to the point that we know

  903. God loves us and is working

  904. for our good and can't be

  905. separated from us.

  906. Look at verse 15.

  907. For you did not receive the

  908. spirit of slavery to fall back

  909. into fear, but you have

  910. received the spirit of

  911. adoption as sons by whom we

  912. cry, Abba, Father.

  913. The spirit himself bears

  914. witness with our spirit that we

  915. are children of God.

  916. See, he's wanting you to

  917. experience not fear.

  918. That's an experience, an

  919. emotion, right?

  920. When cars are rushing by you

  921. and people are everywhere and

  922. there's chaos around you.

  923. And you're in the street and

  924. you have a father somewhere

  925. but you feel alone and

  926. afraid.

  927. You have a spirit of fear.

  928. Paul says, no, no, God

  929. wants you to experience

  930. something else.

  931. Holy Spirit comes to pick

  932. us up, put us in our

  933. father's arms so that we feel

  934. the reality that we're held

  935. and we're safe and we can

  936. cry, Abba, Father.

  937. It's part of why we need to

  938. pray, by the way.

  939. You don't need to pray

  940. because I told you to.

  941. You need to pray to cry out,

  942. Father, not because praying

  943. makes you more a son of God

  944. than you were before you

  945. prayed.

  946. Praying doesn't make you a

  947. child of God.

  948. No, prayer makes you more

  949. aware of your father than you

  950. were before you prayed.

  951. It taps in to the unparalleled

  952. access that you have to the

  953. throne room of heaven, to the

  954. king of glory himself.

  955. It crawls up into his arms,

  956. doesn't it?

  957. To feel his love that was

  958. already there, but it needed

  959. to seep deep into your heart,

  960. Jesus says.

  961. Spend some time calling God

  962. Father, depending upon him,

  963. remembering that he delights

  964. to give good gifts to his

  965. children.

  966. He is that kind of perfect

  967. father for you now and always.

  968. Let the Spirit call you to that.

  969. Psalm 90 says,

  970. Satisfy us in the morning

  971. with your steadfast love,

  972. that we may rejoice and be

  973. glad all our days.

  974. Psalm 90 is a prayer here,

  975. not that God's love would be

  976. good enough to satisfy us,

  977. okay?

  978. It is.

  979. But that we would feel it,

  980. that we would experience it

  981. that way as it leads to joy

  982. and gladness in our lives.

  983. This is another way that being

  984. in Christ, loved in him,

  985. transforms your life.

  986. You weren't meant to be

  987. satisfied with merely human

  988. love.

  989. God didn't design you that way.

  990. So when you try to make a

  991. husband or a wife,

  992. a boyfriend or a girlfriend,

  993. a child or a parent,

  994. satisfy you,

  995. it doesn't work.

  996. It doesn't last.

  997. It can give you a taste,

  998. a picture,

  999. a glimpse of what you're

  1000. longing for,

1001. but your heart was made

1002. to be satisfied only in this

  1003. perfect and permanent love

1004. of the one who made you

  1005. for himself.

  1006. So remembering,

  1007. feeling how deeply loved

  1008. you are in Christ

  1009. actually frees you

  1010. from searching for love,

  1011. for value,

  1012. for security

  1013. in someone else's arms.

  1014. Why?

1015. Because you've already got it

  1016. in your father's.

  1017. It does something else.

  1018. It also frees you

  1019. to love

  1020. and be loved

  1021. selflessly,

  1022. at great cost,

  1023. even when they

  1024. and you

  1025. are imperfect

  1026. and to rejoice

  1027. in such imperfect

  1028. glimpses

  1029. of the perfect

  1030. lover.

  1031. Both of those.

1032. You don't have to run

  1033. after human love

  1034. to find life,

  1035. but you're freed now

  1036. to enjoy

  1037. glimpses

  1038. of that love.

  1039. God loves us

  1040. so well,

  1041. doesn't he?

  1042. One more way

  1043. you experience it.

  1044. Zephaniah says

  1045. when we feel

  1046. his love,

  1047. it quiets

  1048. our noisy hearts.

  1049. I don't know

  1050. if there's anybody

  1051. else in here,

  1052. but I've got

  1053. a noisy heart.

  1054. This verse

  1055. in Zephaniah 3

  1056. says God's love

  1057. calms

  1058. our restless,

  1059. anxious,

  1060. fearful souls.

  1061. This is the difference

  1062. that being loved

  1063. in Christ

  1064. makes in hard times.

  1065. When everything

  1066. around us

  1067. screams that we

  1068. can't possibly

  1069. be loved,

  1070. that we must have

  1071. fallen out of

  1072. God's good graces

  1073. and that makes sense

  1074. to us,

  1075. we know we deserve

  1076. that.

  1077. But the world

  1078. seems to be spinning

  1079. out of control.

  1080. Where's the God

  1081. who loves me?

  1082. Is he looking

  1083. out for me?

  1084. I've messed up

  1085. so much,

  1086. he probably will

  1087. never do anything

  1088. good for me.

  1089. And Zephaniah says

  1090. don't be frantic.

  1091. Don't try to earn

  1092. your way back

  1093. into God.

  1094. Don't forget

  1095. how even imperfect

  1096. parents often

  1097. love their children

  1098. on bad days.

  1099. So let God's

  1100. perfect love

  1101. quiet you

  1102. this morning.

  1103. Hear his love.

  1104. See his love.

  1105. feel his love.

  1106. You have been

  1107. married to his son.

  1108. He has paid

  1109. the most precious

  1110. price ever

  1111. to have you

  1112. as his own.

  1113. He has adopted

  1114. you into his

  1115. family.

  1116. He has given

  1117. you his spirit

  1118. so that you can

  1119. crawl up into

  1120. his arms anytime

  1121. and talk to him

  1122. even when you

  1123. don't know what

  1124. to say.

  1125. He has loved

  1126. you with an

  1127. everlasting love

  1128. like the eternal

  1129. love between

  1130. father and son

  1131. from which you

  1132. can never

  1133. be separated.

  1134. So child of God

  1135. come taste his

  1136. love as well

  1137. as what he wants

  1138. for you.

  1139. He's set the table.

  1140. What a father

  1141. who knew how much

  1142. we would need his

  1143. love.

  1144. Who knew how much

  1145. we would struggle

  1146. to let it sink

  1147. in and really

  1148. be embraced

  1149. and change our

  1150. hearts.

  1151. So he keeps

  1152. giving us himself

  1153. a taste

  1154. of the way

  1155. he most fully

  1156. showed his

  1157. love.

  1158. A picture

  1159. of relationship

  1160. shared intimately

  1161. around a table.

  1162. That's what he

  1163. made you for.

  1164. The love story

  1165. that will never

  1166. end

  1167. because his

  1168. love will

  1169. never end.

  1170. Jesus said it

  1171. this way on the

  1172. night he was

  1173. betrayed he told

  1174. his disciples that

  1175. story as he took

  1176. bread and broke

  1177. it and gave it

  1178. to them as I

  1179. ministering in his

  1180. name give this

  1181. bread to you.

  1182. And he said

  1183. take and eat

  1184. this is my body

  1185. given to you

  1186. do this in

  1187. remembrance of

  1188. me.

  1189. And in the same

  1190. way he took the

  1191. cup after supper

  1192. and said this

  1193. cup is the new

  1194. covenant in my

  1195. blood.

  1196. shed for many

  1197. for the

  1198. forgiveness of

  1199. sins drink

  1200. from it all

  1201. of you for as

  1202. often as you

  1203. eat this bread

  1204. and drink this

  1205. cup you proclaim

  1206. the Lord's death

  1207. until he comes.

  1208. You shout the

  1209. truth that he

  1210. loves me enough

  1211. to give his

  1212. life for me.

  1213. If you trust

  1214. that Jesus gave

  1215. his body and

  1216. blood on the

  1217. cross for you

  1218. because of how

  1219. much he loves

  1220. you then don't

  1221. let what you

  1222. have done or

  1223. how you feel

  1224. be more important

  1225. right now than

  1226. what he has

  1227. done and how

  1228. he feels about

  1229. you.

  1230. You believe this

  1231. and come and

  1232. celebrate with

  1233. him.

  1234. If all of this

  1235. talk about love

  1236. sounds like love

  1237. that could be

  1238. life changing to

  1239. you but you're

  1240. honestly just not

  1241. sure about Jesus

  1242. yet then I want

  1243. to offer you

  1244. once more his

  1245. invitation.

  1246. We would love to

  1247. talk with you more

  1248. about him.

  1249. He wants to

  1250. invite you not to

  1251. these elements this

  1252. morning but to

  1253. crawling up in

  1254. your father's arms

  1255. and actually knowing

  1256. his love and

  1257. resting there

  1258. forever.

  1259. So feel free to

  1260. come and observe.

  1261. Come let us pray

1262. with you or if you

  1263. prefer stay where

  1264. you are and

  1265. contemplate these

  1266. things yourself

  1267. but for all of

  1268. you child of God

  1269. or one who's

  1270. wondering about

  1271. that my prayer is

  1272. that none of you

  1273. would leave here

  1274. and miss the

  1275. display of the

  1276. greatest love

  1277. ever given.

  1278. When you were at

  1279. your worst God

  1280. gave you his best

  1281. his son because

  1282. he loves you

  1283. let's pray and

  1284. we'll eat with

  1285. him.

  1286. Father might it

  1287. be that we would

  1288. actually taste

  1289. some of your love

  1290. that would sink

  1291. so deeply into

  1292. us that nothing

  1293. could be truer

  1294. nothing could be

  1295. more certain for

  1296. us.

  1297. Nothing could be

  1298. more inspiring to

  1299. us as we live

  1300. this week.

  1301. Because you are

  1302. so good would

  1303. you take things

  1304. that are really

  1305. common would you

  1306. use them for a

  1307. very uncommon

  1308. holy purpose in

  1309. our hearts to

  1310. build our faith

  1311. to bring us to

  1312. bow the knee and

  1313. embrace the love

  1314. of a God who

  1315. loves us when it

  1316. doesn't make sense

  1317. and when we don't

  1318. deserve it.

  1319. Thank you for

  1320. meeting with us

  1321. this morning that

  1322. we might believe

  1323. you don't just

  1324. love us from

  1325. afar but you love

  1326. us hand in hand

  1327. and even getting

  1328. up in your arms

  1329. right now.

  1330. Work by your

  1331. spirit in our

  1332. hearts in Jesus

  1333. name.

  1334. Amen.
