  1. You are listening to a message from Southwood Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama.

  2. ! Our passion is to experience and express grace. Join us.

  3. ! Can a selfish person really become loving and generous?

  4. ! Can a fearful, anxious person ever be at peace?

  5. Can a hothead really become patient? We have our doubts, don't we?

  6. But Jesus has good news for us this morning along those lines as we continue to learn about

  7. our union with Christ, about abiding in Christ. This summer we've been hearing God's Word tell

  8. us about this wonderful reality that God has placed us, has defined us, has blessed us,

  9. has loved us so completely in Christ that nothing can take us out of Jesus or take Jesus out of us.

  10. We've seen how unbreakable that union is, right?

  11. That gives us hope and confidence in Christ. But now as we kind of move towards the later part of

  12. the summer, we're considering how even the difficult parts of life are a part of this.

  13. There's a dynamic or developing aspect of that union. Last week Bill Nash really helpfully led us

  14. in considering how the suffering that we go through, right? We grow in knowing Jesus better,

  15. further up, further in. Now to be clear, we can't be united to Jesus any more truly than we already are,

  16. okay? But our awareness of that union, our living out of it, our drawing strength from it can and must

  17. grow over time. It's dynamic. That's what I mean by that word. In that sense, it's kind of like a

  18. marriage relationship which is one of the biblical pictures that God gives us for our union with Christ.

  19. Christy and I celebrated 21 years of marriage this week. That's really, really exciting.

  20. But we were just as officially married on that day 21 years ago as we are now. Legally, technically,

  21. officially, we are equally married as we were then. But the relationship has definitely deepened

  22. in 21 years, right? I mean, we can order for each other at most any restaurant pretty effectively.

  23. We know what the other one will feel in most situations. That really wasn't true 21 years ago.

  24. Now what happens is I'm like going along and just pretending to be happy with something. Christy will

  25. say to me, why are you frustrated? And I will say, me? Frustrated? Now I'm frustrated that you knew

  26. I was frustrated. How did you pick up on that? She knows everything.

  27. You're either married or you're not, right? You can't be half married. We're no more married than

  28. we ever were, but we're growing, right? In knowledge, in love, in the blessing of this dynamic relationship.

  29. We're growing because the reality of the relationship is secure.

  30. So in our relationship with God, God loves us, graces us, blesses us right where we are.

  31. Those realities don't change. They don't ebb and flow each day. And God longs for us to be shaped

  32. into His image the way that He created us to be and the way He envisioned us to be when He united us

  33. to His Son so that transformation would actually be possible for us. It could happen in our lives.

  34. That's what we're going to be talking about these next two weeks. How that relationship with Jesus

  35. that's so secure actually produces change, growth in otherwise stagnant or decaying people like you and me,

  36. who otherwise we'd care only about ourselves, who as we get older would just get more ornery and more sore.

  37. That's the way things trend.

  38. Instead, I want you to think of someone who's aging, someone older that you know of.

  39. Maybe their mind's not quite as sharp as before. Maybe their body is getting weaker, but you know someone

  40. and they're just a beautiful person, right? You know someone like this, full of love and joy and peace.

  41. This week we're going to look at the positive side of that change in bearing fruit.

  42. Next week we're going to look at the flip side in battling sin. Don't skip.

  43. Let's turn together to John chapter 15. This is Jesus' classic explanation of this reality to His disciples

    John 15 chapter mention

  44. the night before the cross. As He's sending them as His representatives on His mission,

  45. He gives them a vital picture of their ongoing relationship with Him even though He's going away.

  46. It's John 15 at verse 1. Jesus Himself says,

  47. I am the true vine and my Father is the vine dresser. Every branch of mine that does not bear fruit He takes away

  48. and every branch that does bear fruit He prunes that it may bear more fruit.

  49. Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you.

  50. Abide in me and I in you.

  51. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself unless it abides in the vine,

  52. neither can you unless you abide in me.

  53. I am the vine.

  54. You are the branches.

  55. Whoever abides in me and I in him,

  56. he it is that bears much fruit.

  57. For apart from me, you can do nothing.

  58. If anyone does not abide in me,

  59. he's thrown away like a branch and withers.

  60. And the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire and burned.

  61. But if you abide in me,

  62. and my words abide in you,

  63. ask whatever you wish and it will be done for you.

  64. By this my Father is glorified that you bear much fruit

  65. and so prove to be my disciples.

  66. As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you.

  67. Abide in my love.

  68. If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love,

  69. just as I have kept my Father's commandments and abide in His love.

  70. These things I have spoken to you,

  71. that my joy may be in you

  72. and that your joy may be full.

  73. This is God's word.

  74. Join me as we ask for His help.

  75. Father, we do pray that you would draw us close

  76. and teach us to abide.

  77. We need your help with that.

  78. Even with coming to you for help, we need your help.

  79. We are desperately needy.

  80. We ask that you would meet us in our need,

  81. that you would change us,

  82. that you would, as you promised,

  83. make us like Jesus.

  84. That's our hope and it's our request of you today.

  85. Do that work in each of us.

  86. For Jesus' sake, we ask.

  87. Amen.

  88. We saw a few months ago in our study of John's Gospel

  89. that Jesus here in this passage

  90. is drawing on an Old Testament image

  91. of God's relationship with His people, right?

  92. They were to be for Him.

  93. They were to be for Him a fruitful vine.

  94. He wanted His people to produce righteousness

  95. and justice and reflect His image.

  96. But Isaiah says,

  97. While the vineyard of the Lord of hosts is the house of Israel

  98. and the men of Judah are as pleasant planting,

  99. God comes to look through His vineyard

  100. and find all of the wonderful fruit.

  101. He looked for justice, but behold, bloodshed.

  102. For righteousness, but behold, an outcry.

  103. It's that rotten fruit, right?

  104. Repeatedly, God's people are a vine that bears bad fruit.

  105. And so, the reason I point that out briefly

  106. is that Jesus is making a massive statement

  107. when He stands to say,

  108. I am the true vine.

  109. He's saying, I'm the one who will be obedient,

  110. faithful, just, merciful,

  111. a reflection of the King,

  112. a light to the nations.

  113. I'm gonna do that, Jesus says.

  114. That's who I am.

  115. And so, if we want to be fruitful branches,

  116. a part of God's people,

  117. we have to be connected to Jesus.

  118. Grafted in, if you will, to the true vine.

  119. You'll notice that throughout this passage.

  120. That's what makes all the difference, isn't it?

  121. Jesus says it a number of different ways.

  122. It's our vital connection to Him.

  123. Just notice for a minute before we move on

  124. how amazing and wonderful Jesus must be

  125. for that to be true.

  126. What life must be pulsing through Him

  127. to be the source of life for all of God's children.

  128. What utter goodness to please

  129. the perfectly righteous King.

  130. The vine dresser Himself is seeing the fruit

  131. that He longs for.

  132. What power Jesus must have to hold together

  133. in one branch all of these diverse branches

  134. of God's family from every tribe and tongue and nation

  135. all in Christ.

  136. He is the vine that we can count on.

  137. It's like what Paul says

  138. when he describes our ongoing life in this world

  139. and he reminds us to live the same way

  140. that we were saved in Jesus,

  141. in total dependence.

  142. As you received Christ Jesus the Lord,

  143. so walk in Him.

  144. Colossians chapter 2.

    Colossians 2 chapter mention

  145. Rooted and built up in Him.

  146. Put those roots down deeper into Jesus.

  147. Further up, further in.

  148. That will be the source of fruit in our lives.

  149. Let's not get confused and look for it anywhere else.

  150. Now we're gonna get to how that works.

  151. Right now that's pretty theoretical.

  152. But it's where we have to start.

  153. And don't you love what Jesus is saying?

  154. Notice what else.

  155. It's not just that He's the vine,

  156. but there's a promise here for us.

  157. Look, verse 5.

  158. Abide in me and I in you.

  159. That's what we've been talking about this summer.

  160. Christ in us.

  161. Us in Christ.

  162. This beautiful union.

  163. And bear much fruit.

  164. Not maybe.

  165. Not a little bit here and some there.

  166. But definitely, certainly, inevitably,

  167. you can count on much fruit.

  168. Perhaps we think first of the fruit of the Spirit, right?

  169. Like we read earlier.

  170. Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness,

  171. faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control

  172. starting to grow in our lives.

  173. Later in this passage,

  174. the fruit of answered prayers is mentioned.

  175. Clearly in this context,

  176. Jesus is sending His disciples on His mission

  177. to bear the fruit of others joining them

  178. in relationship with Jesus.

  179. Lots of different kinds of fruit.

  180. But listen, in any of those areas,

  181. because of what Jesus is saying,

  182. don't give up because you're down on yourself.

  183. And because you're feeling weak

  184. or stuck or hopeless.

  185. If you are united to Christ by faith,

  186. Jesus says change is coming.

  187. Growth is certain because He is the true vine,

  188. the life-giving vine.

  189. In fact, when we see even just a little fruit

  190. in our lives, that shouldn't discourage us.

  191. That should encourage us.

  192. What happens when there's a little fruit?

  193. What does Jesus say?

  194. Expect more to come

  195. because our Father, the vine dresser,

  196. is so good.

  197. Even in the painful seasons,

  198. He is pruning us.

  199. Right?

  200. So that what happens?

  201. So that we're miserable and give up?

  202. No.

  203. So that we bear more fruit.

  204. He is so good.

  205. Even when you can hardly see it,

  206. it's just a little blossom.

  207. God, it feels like He's cutting on you.

  208. It feels like, oh, this is painful.

  209. If you're a gardener,

  210. it might look like death.

  211. Right?

  212. There's all this stuff all over the lawn,

  213. but He's bringing more fruit.

  214. I mean, that makes sense, doesn't it?

  215. How could it be that we could be

  216. in such close, vital relationship with Jesus

  217. like we've been talking about

  218. and not be changed?

  219. Not bear fruit?

  220. It wouldn't make sense,

  221. would it as powerful as He is?

  222. That is the vital, dynamic nature

  223. of this picture for our union with Christ.

  224. Maybe I picture Jesus walking with His disciples,

  225. you know, toward the garden that night

  226. after they've left the upper room,

  227. and He maybe picks up a branch like this

  228. and He's holding it and saying,

  229. look, this kind of fruit.

  230. He's saying the life of the vine

  231. flows into the branches

  232. so that they bear fruit.

  233. And He's saying, I might be leaving,

  234. but this is the kind of relationship we have.

  235. Expect it.

  236. Count on it.

  237. There's fruit coming in your life.

  238. And side note,

  239. we need to believe that

  240. not only in our own lives,

  241. but if it's true for us,

  242. where else can we believe it?

  243. What about others?

  244. Don't give up on them.

  245. Don't decide that He's too far gone,

  246. that she's not worth having any hope for,

  247. because Jesus brings fruit.

  248. Don't give up.

  249. He promises there's fruit coming.

  250. But it's not just this automatic transaction, is it?

  251. It's not that everyone united to Christ

  252. bears exactly the same fruit

  253. at exactly the same time, right?

  254. That's not our experience.

  255. Jesus takes great pains here,

  256. repeating over and over,

  257. what are we supposed to do?

  258. Abide.

  259. Abide.

  260. If you abide.

  261. He's saying,

  262. apart from me,

  263. you can do

  264. nothing.

  265. Not much fruit.

  266. Not even a little fruit.

  267. No fruit.

  268. It's a big difference.

  269. So don't just,

  270. don't just stop by and visit me occasionally,

  271. Jesus is saying.

  272. Make your home

  273. with me.

  274. Will it be fruitful

  275. to go this afternoon

  276. and find a dead branch

  277. in your yard

  278. and hold it up

  279. to a tree

  280. or a vine?

  281. Will you start to see fruit grow

  282. all of a sudden?

  283. What if you did it overnight?

  284. If you stood out there

  285. a long time

  286. holding the dead branch

  287. up next to the vine,

  288. would that help?

  289. What if you held them close,

  290. like a few minutes

  291. every day

  292. all year,

  293. you know?

  294. Five or ten minutes

  295. in the morning.

  296. Would that do it?

  297. No.

  298. You have to connect

  299. to them

  300. vitally.

  301. If you just

  302. go around

  303. and there's another option,

  304. you could find some good fruit

  305. and you could

  306. tape it to the dead branch,

  307. right?

  308. And that would look good

  309. for a few minutes

  310. and then

  311. pretty soon

  312. that's not gonna last,

  313. is it?

  314. The fruit's gonna go bad.

  315. The branch

  316. won't look good.

  317. No,

  318. for real

  319. lasting fruit,

  320. the branch

  321. has to make

  322. its home

  323. in the vine

  324. so that it is

  325. actually connected

  326. in a way that draws

  327. life and nourishment

  328. and power

  329. from the source

  330. of that life.

  331. That's what has to happen,

  332. right?

  333. I've showed you pictures

  334. of Team Hoyt

  335. before.

  336. It's not a perfect

  337. illustration

  338. for everything,

  339. but it does picture

  340. this aspect

  341. of our union

  342. with Christ

  343. really well.

  344. The branch

  345. draws its power

  346. from the vine.

  347. Dick and Rick Hoyt

  348. are father and son

  349. triathletes.

  350. They have competed

  351. together in triathlons

  352. and marathons

  353. around the world.

  354. Rick,

  355. the son

  356. in the chair there,

  357. has cerebral palsy.

  358. And so,

  359. Rick

  360. really can't

  361. compete

  362. on his own

  363. in triathlons.

  364. But his father,

  365. Dick,

  366. powers the team.

  367. Rick's job

  368. is to stay connected

  369. to the power source,

  370. not just occasionally,

  371. not just checking in

  372. during the race,

  373. but constantly.

  374. They have a wheelchair

  375. adapted

  376. for Dick

  377. to push Rick

  378. as they run

  379. and then when they get

  380. to the biking part,

  381. there's a special chair

  382. that Rick sits in

  383. while Dick

  384. is riding

  385. and then you gotta swim

  386. and so they've got

  387. this special little boat

  388. and Rick

  389. gets in the boat,

  390. Dick ties it around

  391. his arm

  392. and starts to

  393. swim

  394. because apart

  395. from Dick,

  396. Rick can do

  397. nothing

  398. of the completion

  399. of a triathlon,

  400. right?

  401. In fact,

  402. Rick would be crazy

  403. to go even for a little while

  404. outside of the boat

  405. or out of his chair.

  406. but connected to Dick,

  407. Rick competes

  408. with power

  409. and life

  410. and joy

  411. when you see

  412. the picture

  413. reveling

  414. not only

  415. that he's finishing

  416. the race

  417. but I think

  418. there's joy.

  419. They say this,

  420. that this is their favorite

  421. thing to do together.

  422. He's reveling

  423. in the relationship

  424. with his father

  425. that they get

  426. to do this together

  427. and there we are

  428. with Jesus,

  429. right?

  430. who promises

  431. as we draw

  432. our life

  433. from him

  434. rather than

  435. wandering out

  436. on our own

  437. to rely on

  438. our own strength

  439. that we will

  440. bear

  441. much

  442. fruit.

  443. And as Jesus

  444. continues talking

  445. he explains

  446. a bit more

  447. of how that works

  448. itself out

  449. in our lives.

  450. He tells us

  451. to abide

  452. which Pastor Andrew

  453. Murray helpfully

  454. reminds us

  455. is weakness

  456. entrusting itself

  457. to a mighty one

  458. an unfaithful one

  459. casting self

  460. on one

  461. altogether

  462. trustworthy

  463. and true.

  464. That's what

  465. abiding is.

  466. Jesus indeed

  467. is a home

  468. we can count on.

  469. Making our

  470. home with him.

  471. That's the idea

  472. of abiding.

  473. That's what I mean

  474. by that.

  475. We make our home

  476. in him

  477. as he makes

  478. his home

  479. in us.

  480. He assures us

  481. over and over here

  482. that this process

  483. of trusting in him

  484. making the reality

  485. of our relationship

  486. with him

  487. the core of our identity

  488. the center

  489. of our reality

  490. our home

  491. will produce fruit.

  492. But we don't

  493. really understand

  494. that very easily.

  495. How?

  496. How does that happen?

  497. I'm going to give you

  498. three things

  499. that he says

  500. in this passage

  501. and then I want to give you

  502. a picture of what

  503. it looks like.

  504. Some of us need

  505. both of those

  506. some of us are more

  507. helped by one

  508. than the other.

  509. Three ways

  510. that this works

  511. itself out

  512. in our lives.

  513. First

  514. Jesus' words

  515. being at home

  516. in you.

  517. Verse 7

  518. If you abide

  519. in me

  520. and my words

  521. abide in you

  522. ask whatever you wish

  523. and it will be

  524. done for you.

  525. This is repeated

  526. throughout scripture

  527. that the word

  528. of Christ

  529. should dwell

  530. in us richly

  531. to shape our lives

  532. together as God's

  533. people.

  534. That we are to hide

  535. God's word

  536. in our heart

  537. that we might not

  538. sin against him

  539. because his word

  540. is a lamp to our feet

  541. and a light to our path

  542. right?

  543. So abiding

  544. in his word

  545. means reading it

  546. yes for sure

  547. and meditating

  548. on its direction

  549. for my life

  550. even memorizing it

  551. so that I hear it

  552. in my head

  553. throughout the day

  554. even when I don't have

  555. a Bible in my hands

  556. I'm hearing God's word

  557. it's shaping my day

  558. his word

  559. at home

  560. in me

  561. right?

  562. And particularly here

  563. the promise is

  564. that as God's word

  565. shapes our desires

  566. shapes our prayers

  567. our prayers

  568. for fruit

  569. are answered

  570. that's what we're

  571. praying for here

  572. see they're not

  573. selfish prayers

  574. they're prayers

  575. for the Father's

  576. glory

  577. when you pray

  578. for him

  579. to make you

  580. fruitful

  581. and gentle

  582. generous

  583. like him

  584. God make me

  585. more like

  586. you

  587. his words

  588. dwell in us

  589. and they make

  590. our desires

  591. obedient to his

  592. will

  593. for his glory

  594. in verse 9

  595. we make our

  596. home

  597. in Jesus'

  598. love

  599. as the Father

  600. has loved me

  601. so have I

  602. loved you

  603. abide

  604. in my love

  605. this is that

  606. mind-blowing

  607. truth that we

  608. saw again a

  609. couple of weeks

  610. ago

  611. right?

  612. Because we're

  613. united to

  614. Jesus

  615. as the Father

  616. has loved

  617. Jesus

  618. how is that?

  619. I couldn't

  620. exhaust it for you

  621. but full knowledge

  622. of everything

  623. eternal perfection

  624. complete sharing

  625. of all good things

  626. it's this unending

  627. Trinitarian love

  628. within the God

  629. who is love

  630. everything possible

  631. you could say

  632. about love

  633. just in that way

  634. Jesus

  635. has loved you

  636. so much so

  637. that Paul says

  638. this is a love

  639. that surpasses

  640. knowledge

  641. and yet he prays

  642. that we will

  643. actually know

  644. how long

  645. and how wide

  646. and how high

  647. and how deep

  648. is this measureless

  649. love

  650. because why do we

  651. need to know

  652. all the dimensions?

  653. because we're told

  654. to live there

  655. to make our

  656. home there

  657. to abide there

  658. in his love

  659. to have this reality

  660. that is really

  661. beyond our

  662. comprehension

  663. shape our lives

  664. listen his love

  665. is there

  666. it's not changing

  667. the question is

  668. are we resting

  669. living

  670. being empowered

  671. in it

  672. don't get out

  673. of the wheelchair

  674. or out of the boat

  675. and try to make

  676. it on your own

  677. and try to produce

  678. your own fruit

  679. if you're disconnected

  680. from Jesus' love

  681. self-sacrificing love

  682. like God's love

  683. will grow in our lives

  684. as we soak

  685. constantly

  686. in his love

  687. for us

  688. and then Jesus

  689. says one more

  690. thing about abiding

  691. it's his joy

  692. making its home

  693. in you

  694. verse 11

  695. these things

  696. I have spoken

  697. to you

  698. that my joy

  699. may be in you

  700. and that your joy

  701. as a result

  702. may be full

  703. Jesus' joy

  704. we know Jesus' joy

  705. is not based on

  706. happy circumstances

  707. right

  708. because it was for

  709. the joy

  710. that was set

  711. before him

  712. that he endured

  713. the cross

  714. his joy

  715. we see here

  716. involves obedience

  717. to his father

  718. and it must have

  719. involved rescuing us

  720. right

  721. to bring us

  722. into this relationship

  723. that joy

  724. that was set

  725. before him

  726. he delights

  727. in you

  728. it's a joy

  729. that knows

  730. no matter what happens

  731. even death

  732. on a cross

  733. good is coming

  734. from his loving father

  735. it's a joy

  736. that feels

  737. certain

  738. that satisfaction

  739. in God's provision

  740. what he knows

  741. we need

  742. is more fulfilling

  743. than anything

  744. that this world offers

  745. it's that kind of joy

  746. it's a joy

  747. that trust God's

  748. eternal inheritance

  749. relationship with him

  750. is more lasting

  751. than any other relationship

  752. we've ever known

  753. or will know

  754. it's a joy

  755. that celebrates

  756. Jesus' victory

  757. right

  758. he is the one

  759. who has driven this

  760. and achieved this victory

  761. but it celebrates

  762. his victory

  763. as ours

  764. as we're delightfully

  765. connected to him

  766. and crossing the finish line

  767. yes

  768. he conquered

  769. sin

  770. and death

  771. we have conquered

  772. sin

  773. and death

  774. what joy

  775. in what he has done

  776. so

  777. wake up

  778. and sit in my presence

  779. Jesus says

  780. come with your

  781. your honest tears

  782. and your genuine heartache

  783. about the really hard

  784. things you're walking through

  785. and open my word

  786. and open your heart

  787. to me

  788. and I will

  789. pour my joy

  790. into you

  791. so that it's at home

  792. in your heart

  793. a joy that comes

  794. from knowing

  795. you're the apple

  796. of my eye

  797. you're the delight

  798. of my heart

  799. you're the ones

  800. for whom I gave

  801. my life

  802. so that you would share

  803. in the greatest thing ever

  804. life with me

  805. and my father

  806. I've given my life

  807. so that my joy

  808. can start to fill

  809. your heart

  810. when it's the joy

  811. of Christ

  812. that fills your heart

  813. then your joy

  814. is full

  815. so

  816. when your

  817. kid wanders away

  818. when your house

  819. burns

  820. when you

  821. get mocked

  822. by co-workers

  823. or friends

  824. you hurt

  825. and you grieve

  826. and you rejoice

  827. see that's different

  828. right

  829. that's something

  830. that's gotta change

  831. this is what Jesus

  832. tells us

  833. will change us

  834. in time

  835. we're so at home

  836. in him

  837. that his word

  838. and his love

  839. and his joy

  840. flow into us

  841. branches

  842. and bear fruit

  843. in our lives

  844. let me help us

  845. feel what this

  846. looks like

  847. in our lives

  848. to think how this

  849. abiding in the vine

  850. could actually

  851. bear fruit for us

  852. I wanna do that

  853. just give you

  854. one example

  855. this morning

  856. I wanna talk about

  857. loving someone

  858. who's hard to love

  859. I mean can we all

  860. agree that love

  861. is gonna be at the top

  862. of the list

  863. of the kind of fruit

  864. we want showing up

  865. in our lives

  866. and in our relationships

  867. and man

  868. that can be really hard

  869. sometimes

  870. imagine you're

  871. the parent

  872. of a difficult

  873. two year old

  874. for some of you

  875. that's really painful

  876. right now

  877. I get that

  878. if you're not

  879. presently the parent

  880. of a difficult

  881. two year old

  882. you can apply this

  883. equally well

  884. to a childish

  885. co-worker

  886. or friend

  887. right

  888. kids

  889. what does it look like

  890. to love a sibling

  891. sometimes the people

  892. closest to us

  893. can be hard

  894. to love

  895. you know someone

  896. hard to love

  897. people for whom

  898. love is not naturally

  899. in your hearts

  900. it's not the first thing

  901. that comes to mind

  902. think of someone

  903. okay

  904. in your life

  905. but for sake

  906. of one example

  907. your parent

  908. and your two year old

  909. is wearing you out

  910. disobeying

  911. everything

  912. that you say

  913. wreaking

  914. havoc

  915. around the house

  916. all day

  917. and refusing

  918. to go

  919. to bed at night

  920. so that the chaos

  921. just continues

  922. and it never stops

  923. and you never

  924. get a break

  925. and in those

  926. tired moments

  927. that you've started

  928. to experience

  929. more and more of

  930. you've started

  931. losing your temper

  932. quite often

  933. losing control

  934. it seems like

  935. just about

  936. every night

  937. lately

  938. and you're

  939. discouraged

  940. you're ashamed

  941. you're angry

  942. you don't want

  943. to be

  944. like this

  945. so here you are

  946. now you're driving

  947. home

  948. from work

  949. again

  950. and you know

  951. that you are

  952. entering the whirlwind

  953. that's what you're

  954. coming home to

  955. you have a few minutes

  956. before you get there

  957. you want to reset

  958. in those few minutes

  959. you could feel

  960. defeated

  961. and just decide

  962. that this child

  963. is too wild

  964. and I am too

  965. short tempered

  966. so I'm just going

  967. to lose it again

  968. tonight

  969. nothing can help

  970. that's it

  971. I've been there

  972. okay

  973. those feelings

  974. are real

  975. and can be

  976. overwhelming

  977. but Jesus says

  978. don't give up

  979. he says

  980. he's still

  981. working on you

  982. there's hope

  983. so let's suppose

  984. you're not there yet

  985. and you're not

  986. willing

  987. to give up

  988. on your evening

  989. you really want

  990. to be patient

  991. you really want

  992. to love your child

  993. you really want

  994. to be a good dad

  995. you really want

  996. to think of yourself

  997. like that

  998. right

  999. you have two basic

  1000. options for how

1001. to do it that night

  1002. okay

  1003. there's the option

  1004. of growth

  1005. in self

  1006. by striving

  1007. really hard

  1008. or

  1009. growth in grace

  1010. in union

  1011. with Christ

1012. let me try to paint

  1013. two different pictures

  1014. you could spend

  1015. those few minutes

1016. like most of us do

  1017. making your home

  1018. in yourself

  1019. it's a very tempting

  1020. thing to do

  1021. because we want

  1022. to be good

  1023. right

1024. I want to do this

  1025. I want to find

  1026. this in myself

  1027. making my home

  1028. in my own efforts

  1029. this is my default

  1030. I'm locking in

  1031. on the way home

  1032. I am giving myself

  1033. a pep talk

  1034. I can be a good dad

  1035. I won't lose

  1036. to a toddler again

  1037. that is so embarrassing

  1038. I can outlast him

1039. I'm going to do it

  1040. he can't make me

  1041. lose my temper

  1042. tonight

  1043. in other words

  1044. what are you doing

  1045. as those thoughts

  1046. start to go through

  1047. your head

  1048. you're seeking

  1049. to shape

  1050. your own identity

  1051. aren't you

  1052. to tell yourself

  1053. who you are

  1054. I'm going to be

  1055. like this

  1056. I insist on it

  1057. this is who

  1058. I'm going to be

  1059. you could say it

  1060. this way

  1061. you're trying to

  1062. decorate your branch

  1063. with some

  1064. good fruit

  1065. it's the fruit

  1066. that you should want

  1067. put a little patience

  1068. and love on it

  1069. I want to look

  1070. good tonight

  1071. and some of us

  1072. will have

  1073. better nights

  1074. than others

  1075. some will have

  1076. a little bit

  1077. more success

  1078. might depend

  1079. on what kind

  1080. of night

  1081. your two year old

  1082. has

  1083. but at the end

  1084. of the night

  1085. no matter

  1086. how it went

  1087. you're still

  1088. going to resent

  1089. your child

  1090. aren't you

  1091. for all of the

  1092. effort

  1093. you're having

  1094. to put in

  1095. you're exerting

  1096. all of this effort

  1097. and you're feeling

  1098. resentful

  1099. rather than

  1100. loving the child

  1101. you see that

  1102. there's no love

  1103. growing

  1104. except perhaps

  1105. self-love

  1106. growing in your

  1107. heart

  1108. is there

  1109. as a result

  1110. there's going to

  1111. be a night

  1112. again soon

  1113. where that toddler

  1114. disturbs your peace

  1115. and you're going

  1116. to break again

  1117. or

  1118. you could spend

  1119. those few moments

  1120. that you have

  1121. in the car ride

  1122. home

  1123. making your home

  1124. if you will

  1125. in Christ

  1126. abiding

  1127. in him

  1128. maybe you know

  1129. you struggle

  1130. to do that

  1131. and someone

  1132. in your grace

  1133. group

  1134. texts you

  1135. to remind you

  1136. of the wonder

  1137. of Jesus

  1138. and your relationship

  1139. with him

  1140. right as you're

  1141. walking out the door

  1142. and you're getting

  1143. in the car

  1144. and so you start

  1145. to pray

  1146. because you're

  1147. desperate

  1148. God I want

  1149. to be a good

  1150. dad

  1151. but I need

  1152. your help

  1153. I need your

  1154. power

  1155. God I see

  1156. my selfishness

  1157. when I lose

  1158. my temper

  1159. with my kid

  1160. man I know

  1161. I'm just

  1162. like him

  1163. parents you've

  1164. felt that before

  1165. if I'm honest

  1166. God and slow

  1167. down long enough

  1168. I am just

  1169. like my child

  1170. no one respects

  1171. me at work

  1172. I feel out of

  1173. control in life

  1174. and so I'm

  1175. coming home

  1176. to that chaos

  1177. it just attacks

  1178. my longing

  1179. for peace

  1180. and for control

  1181. and for having

  1182. success at

  1183. something

  1184. and I'm just

  1185. a mess

  1186. God

  1187. and in that

  1188. moment you say

  1189. but God

  1190. I can tell you

  1191. that

  1192. I'm in Christ

  1193. so even when I

  1194. tell you what a

  1195. mess I am

  1196. I'm still

  1197. loved

  1198. I'm so loved

  1199. by you God

  1200. that even my

  1201. toddler level

  1202. fits

  1203. and God

  1204. I confess

  1205. that's what they

  1206. are

  1207. when I lose

  1208. my temper

  1209. even those

  1210. fits don't

  1211. diminish your

  1212. love for me

  1213. in fact

  1214. they motivated

  1215. you to send

  1216. your son

  1217. for me

  1218. when I was

  1219. a sinner

  1220. like that

  1221. so I know

  1222. that even as

  1223. a sinner God

  1224. coming to you

  1225. now asking

  1226. for your help

  1227. I know your

  1228. word tells me

  1229. nothing can

  1230. separate me

  1231. from your

  1232. love in

  1233. Christ

  1234. I love that

  1235. verse God

  1236. thank you

  1237. thank you

  1238. I am loved

  1239. right now

  1240. what starts

  1241. to happen

  1242. now God

  1243. I am longing

  1244. for my

  1245. toddler

  1246. to experience

  1247. that kind

  1248. of love

  1249. God

  1250. there's nothing

  1251. better than

  1252. your love

  1253. so I am

  1254. asking you

  1255. to empower

  1256. me by your

  1257. spirit

  1258. because you're

  1259. sending me

  1260. as his dad

  1261. back into

  1262. this chaos

  1263. I need you

  1264. to empower

  1265. me by your

  1266. spirit within

  1267. me with love

  1268. and patience

  1269. for tonight

  1270. remind me

  1271. that nothing

  1272. he can do

  1273. will make me

  1274. love him

  1275. less

  1276. father even

  1277. if it's a

  1278. hard night

  1279. I'm going

  1280. to take that

  1281. as painful

  1282. as it is

  1283. to be a

  1284. part of

  1285. your pruning

  1286. me

  1287. because you

  1288. want me

  1289. to bear

  1290. more fruit

  1291. and you're

  1292. doing something

  1293. in the life

  1294. of my child

  1295. that I don't

  1296. even recognize

  1297. so I'm

  1298. going to go

  1299. and trust

  1300. you

  1301. thank you

  1302. that I have

  1303. nothing to

  1304. prove to

  1305. you or to

  1306. anyone else

  1307. tonight

  1308. but that from

  1309. the peace I

  1310. have with you

  1311. I can

  1312. really love

  1313. as you

  1314. have loved

  1315. me

  1316. see how

  1317. real love

  1318. is starting

  1319. to grow

  1320. you're

  1321. going to

  1322. have a

  1323. perfect

  1324. night

  1325. quite

  1326. possibly

  1327. not

  1328. but there's

  1329. actually

  1330. real fruit

  1331. starting to

  1332. grow

  1333. there's

  1334. going to

  1335. be pruning

  1336. there will

  1337. be another

  1338. hard night

  1339. when you'll

  1340. feel like

  1341. you really

  1342. blew it

  1343. again

  1344. and God

  1345. will use

  1346. that to

  1347. drive you

  1348. back to

  1349. him

  1350. and back

  1351. to his

  1352. love

  1353. and give

  1354. you the

  1355. joy of

  1356. letting

  1357. that love

  1358. that you're

  1359. now abiding

  1360. in be love

  1361. that flows

  1362. through you

  1363. again

  1364. because you

  1365. really are

  1366. starting to

  1367. love in a

  1368. new way

  1369. that's the

  1370. difference

  1371. that growth

  1372. in grace

  1373. growth

  1374. in Christ

  1375. makes from

  1376. growth in

  1377. self

  1378. I'm

  1379. commending

  1380. it to you

  1381. not as a

  1382. technique

  1383. it's not

  1384. some magic

  1385. formula

  1386. it's a

  1387. reality in

  1388. which God

  1389. made you

  1390. to live

  1391. that produces

  1392. lasting fruit

  1393. he promises

  1394. it might

  1395. make you

  1396. increasingly

  1397. patient

  1398. with a

  1399. whiny

  1400. toddler

  1401. it might

  1402. make you

  1403. love someone

  1404. enough to

  1405. share the

  1406. good news

  1407. of Jesus

  1408. with her

  1409. even though

  1410. you don't

  1411. know how

  1412. she'll

  1413. respond

  1414. it might

  1415. make you

  1416. an agent

  1417. of peace

  1418. as you

  1419. pray daily

  1420. for someone

  1421. who's

  1422. struggling

  1423. and you

  1424. encourage him

  1425. in his

  1426. pain

  1427. I don't

  1428. know what

  1429. sorts of

  1430. things it

  1431. will do

  1432. what it

  1433. will

  1434. assuredly

  1435. do

  1436. is

  1437. if you're

  1438. making your

  1439. home in

  1440. Jesus

  1441. it will

  1442. help you

  1443. delight in

  1444. him

  1445. as the

  1446. source

  1447. of your

  1448. life

  1449. see no

  1450. matter how

  1451. well you

  1452. do

  1453. our fruit

  1454. the amount

  1455. of it

  1456. the quality

  1457. of it

  1458. does not

  1459. connect us

  1460. to Jesus

  1461. that's not

  1462. how it works

  1463. right

  1464. that's not

  1465. how vines

  1466. and branches

  1467. work

  1468. it's not

  1469. the fruit

  1470. that connects

  1471. the branch

  1472. to the vine

  1473. no

  1474. what it does

  1475. is assure us

  1476. that we are

  1477. in the boat

  1478. with him

  1479. pulling

  1480. we start to

  1481. feel his

  1482. strength

  1483. we say

  1484. I don't

  1485. love like

  1486. this God

  1487. but you

  1488. do

  1489. it reminds

  1490. us of the

  1491. gracious

  1492. power of

  1493. our Savior

  1494. for us

  1495. that he

  1496. loves us

  1497. where we

  1498. are

  1499. and longs

  1500. for us

  1501. to bear

  1502. fruit in

  1503. him

  1504. because he

  1505. made us

  1506. for that

  1507. fruit

  1508. so I'm

  1509. not stuck

  1510. I'm not

  1511. hopeless

  1512. I'm not

  1513. a lost

  1514. cause

  1515. because Jesus

  1516. has attached

  1517. himself to

  1518. me

  1519. he's attached

  1520. me to

  1521. himself

  1522. and so he'll

  1523. enable me to

  1524. bear

  1525. much fruit

  1526. divine love

  1527. full joy

  1528. lasting peace

  1529. and more

  1530. and more

  1531. let's ask

  1532. for his help

  1533. Jesus

  1534. what an

  1535. amazing

  1536. promise

  1537. I confess

  1538. to you

  1539. that

  1540. that I

  1541. know

  1542. there's

  1543. skepticism

  1544. in hearing

  1545. that

  1546. because I

  1547. feel it

  1548. in my

  1549. own heart

  1550. Jesus

  1551. this is

  1552. not what

  1553. I experience

  1554. all the

  1555. time

  1556. in fact

  1557. we have

  1558. to trust

  1559. that you're

  1560. bearing fruit

  1561. that we

  1562. don't see

  1563. or recognize

  1564. but Jesus

  1565. we ask you

  1566. to help us

  1567. abide

  1568. that we

  1569. might not

  1570. be

  1571. striving

  1572. in our

  1573. own

  1574. strength

  1575. we know

  1576. that's

  1577. fruitless

  1578. by your

  1579. spirit

  1580. bring fruit

  1581. and life

  1582. and love

  1583. in us

  1584. and for you

  1585. we ask in

  1586. Jesus name

  1587. amen
