  3. We are going to get to the ark and the rainbow in our story this morning.

  4. But the story of Noah and the flood begins somewhere else.

  5. As we've been following the Bible's story from the good creation in the garden to our rebellion that broke that relationship with him,

  6. things go from bad to worse fast.

  7. Disobeying God and eating the forbidden fruit turns to violence.

  8. One brother killing another brother.

  9. Women being abused.

  10. God made these people special in his image and now they're destroying the life that he created.

  11. They're treating it how they want, not how he wants.

  12. We might say that these big sins are such as you look at this world in that day that everyone is going to hell in a handbasket,

  13. we sometimes would say.

  14. But what the Bible indicates grieves God the most is what's going on in people's hearts.

  15. There's always a cane, a lame-ic, a big sinner to make you feel better about your own sin.

  16. We love to follow the sagas of big sinners in the news, right?

  17. The Epsteins, the murderers on trial, the terrorists.

  18. There's always an Adolf Hitler, right?

  19. At least I'm not like him.

  20. That's one reason these big sinners are talked about a lot.

  21. Something about them makes us feel just a little bit better about ourselves, doesn't it?

  22. Certainly they'll get the real punishment.

  23. I'm not so bad.

  24. I want you to notice what God mentions leads him to wipe out the big sinners from the earth.

  25. Yes, there's been murder.

  26. But Genesis 6 opens talking about selfishness and lust.

  27. And then says,

  28. The Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth

  29. and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.

  30. He was not inclined toward goodness, toward life with God, toward reflecting his image.

  31. No, mankind wanted to be God, wanted to do things his own way,

  32. fought about himself first and harbored evil desires in his heart.

  33. That is our big sin.

  34. How do our selfish hearts make God feel?

  35. And the Lord was sorry that he had made man on the earth

  36. and it grieved him to his heart.

  37. So the Lord said,

  38. I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of the land,

  39. man and animals and creeping things and birds of the heavens,

  40. for I am sorry that I have made them.

  41. Once again, man's sin so big that it impacts all of creation, right?

  42. God designed it all to work differently.

  43. We were to model God's good care for God's creation.

  44. But now, murderers and decent guys who tell little white lies to get people to like them more

  45. will be killed.

  46. Now, rapists and nice girls who harbor jealousy toward others will be killed.

  47. The story of the flood first shows us God's wrath

  48. as it is poured out in just judgment due to our sin.

  49. Listen to what our sin deserves.

  50. Now, the earth was corrupt in God's sight

  51. and the earth was filled with violence

  52. and God saw the earth

  53. and behold, it was corrupt

  54. for all flesh had corrupted their way on the earth.

  55. We did it.

  56. And God said to Noah,

  57. I have determined to make an end of all flesh

  58. for the earth is filled with violence through them.

  59. Behold, I will destroy them with the earth.

  60. And God follows through.

  61. Chapter 7, verse 21.

  62. After the flood,

  63. and all flesh died that moved on the earth.

  64. Birds, livestock, beasts,

  65. all swarming creatures that swarm on the earth

  66. and all mankind.

  67. Everything on the dry land

  68. in whose nostrils was the breath of life died.

  69. He blotted out every living thing

  70. that was on the face of the ground.

  71. Man and animals and creeping things

  72. and birds of the heavens.

  73. They were blotted out from the earth.

  74. Do you understand what God is telling us

  75. in this story?

  76. Is what sin deserves?

  77. The wrath and curse of God.

  78. Death, not just for the big sinners,

  79. sinners for all of us rebels.

  80. Even the ones of us who keep it in our heads

  81. and our hearts most of the time.

  82. Even those of us who help the little old lady

  83. across the street,

  84. but do it so that someone else

  85. is going to think well of me.

  86. Or maybe she'll give me a tip.

  87. Who do lots of right things

  88. for lots of wrong reasons?

  89. Sinners like us.

  90. You with me?

  91. That's the sinners that are being discussed here.

  92. Mercifully, God often restrains

  93. the judgment due to our sin in the moment.

  94. So we don't always get this picture

  95. of exactly what our sin deserves,

  96. but it is also a mercy

  97. when God allows us to see,

  98. when he lets us see

  99. what just punishment really looks like,

  100. lest we think we're okay.

  101. So that we don't minimize our sin

  102. or minimize his justice.

  103. May it never be.

  104. There are times God allows

  105. just judgment to break into

  106. temporal history

  107. and give us a glimpse

  108. of what we eternally deserve.

  109. The flood's the first big example

  110. of that in the story.

  111. A few generations later,

  112. Sodom and Gomorrah

  113. will be destroyed

  114. by burning sulfur from heaven.

  115. In the New Testament,

  116. Ananias and Sapphira

  117. make a big donation to the church,

  118. but they lie about it

  119. and they're struck down immediately.

  120. Sin must be destroyed.

  121. It incites God's just wrath.

  122. It offends his holy purity.

  123. It violates his divine justice

  124. and the entire purpose of his creation

  125. because it keeps his people

  126. and his world

  127. from the relationship with him

  128. that he made them for.

  129. So the flood comes.

  130. The heavens literally open,

  131. rain for 40 days

  132. and 40 nights,

  133. waters covering the mountain peaks,

  134. people and animals wiped out.

  135. Y'all, floods are always terrible, right?

  136. And this was the flood

  137. we've never seen the likes of again.

  138. Chapter 7 recounts the waters rising.

  139. It recounts the death toll

  140. that we've already read about.

  141. And it concludes by saying

  142. that the waters prevailed on the earth

  143. 150 days.

  144. But God

  145. remembered

  146. Noah.

  147. But God,

  148. always a good sign

  149. when you're reading the Bible.

  150. This right here

  151. is the pinnacle

  152. of the whole story

  153. in these four chapters.

  154. All of the literary techniques

  155. are used to highlight

  156. chapter 8, verse 1.

  157. But God

  158. remembered

  159. Noah.

  160. At the heart

  161. of the flood account

  162. is not merely

  163. a God who judges sin,

  164. but more importantly,

  165. a God who remembers

  166. and rescues.

  167. God wants people

  168. to see

  169. that he rescues

  170. even as he

  171. judges

  172. sin.

  173. Wow.

  174. Think about that

  175. for a minute.

  176. Could there be

  177. any more

  178. unlikely time

  179. for a rescue

  180. to show up

  181. than right there

  182. when God

  183. is judging?

  184. What a gracious

  185. God

  186. we're dealing

  187. with here.

  188. God

  189. remembered

  190. Noah.

  191. And when God

  192. remembers,

  193. it's not merely

  194. an intellectual

  195. memory thing,

  196. okay?

  197. Just as in the Bible

  198. when we talk about

  199. God forgetting

  200. our sin,

  201. it doesn't just mean

  202. that he can't think

  203. about it anymore.

  204. He doesn't know

  205. what you did yesterday.

  206. It means that God's

  207. not holding our sin

  208. against us.

  209. He's not counting

  210. it against us.

  211. He's not using it

  212. to beat you down.

  213. That's forgetting.

  214. When God remembers,

  215. he acts

  216. to rescue,

  217. okay?

  218. It's more than just

  219. that he thinks about it.

  220. Remember that.

  221. When God remembers,

  222. he acts to rescue.

  223. It's gonna come up again.

  224. But God remembered

  225. Noah

  226. and all the beasts

  227. and all the livestock

  228. that were with him

  229. in the ark

  230. and God made a wind

  231. blow over the earth

  232. and the waters

  233. subsided.

  234. The fountains

  235. of the deep

  236. and the windows

  237. of the heavens

  238. were closed.

  239. The rain from the heavens

  240. was restrained

  241. and the waters

  242. receded from the earth

  243. continually.

  244. At the end

  245. of 150 days,

  246. the waters

  247. had abated.

  248. rescued,

  249. right?

  250. Finally,

  251. the water's gone.

  252. Back in chapter 6,

  253. when God

  254. first reveals

  255. his intent

  256. to destroy the earth,

  257. we get a similar

  258. but God

  259. interruption.

  260. Verse 8,

  261. but Noah

  262. found favor

  263. in the eyes

  264. of the Lord.

  265. These are the

  266. generations of Noah.

  267. Noah was a

  268. righteous man,

  269. blameless

  270. in his generation.

  271. Noah

  272. walked

  273. with God.

  274. Let me be clear

  275. because these are

  276. strong words.

  277. Noah was not

  278. perfect.

  279. We see that

  280. later before you

  281. get out of chapter 9

  282. in big ways.

  283. But he walked

  284. with

  285. God.

  286. Isn't that

  287. what God loves?

  288. Isn't that

  289. why God

  290. made us?

  291. That we would

  292. walk

  293. with him.

  294. In contrast

  295. to living

  296. for self,

  297. to being

  298. filled with

  299. evil thoughts,

  300. Noah

  301. filled up

  302. his days

  303. with thoughts

  304. of God

  305. all the time.

  306. Don't forget

  307. that relationship

  308. is the reason

  309. you exist.

  310. Noah

  311. walked

  312. with

  313. God.

  314. God

  315. and one

  316. day,

  317. I don't know,

  318. maybe they were

  319. actually walking.

  320. God

  321. had news

  322. for Noah.

  323. There's

  324. bad stuff

  325. coming,

  326. lots of

  327. water,

  328. right?

  329. So,

  330. build an ark.

  331. Verse 18

  332. of chapter 6,

  333. But I will

  334. establish my

  335. covenant with

  336. you,

  337. Noah,

  338. and you shall

  339. come into the ark,

  340. you,

  341. your sons,

  342. your wife,

  343. and your sons'

  344. wives with you.

  345. And of every living

  346. thing of all flesh,

  347. you shall bring two

  348. of every sort

  349. into the ark

  350. to keep them

  351. alive with you.

  352. They shall be

  353. male and female.

  354. God's got plans

  355. for the future.

  356. But what he does

  357. here is he makes

  358. a covenant.

  359. Covenant.

  360. When you hear

  361. that word covenant,

  362. I want you to

  363. think relationship.

  364. We're gonna hear

  365. that word a lot

  366. in these stories

  367. through the Old

  368. Testament.

  369. It's a relationship,

  370. a special relationship

  371. that speaks

  372. of God's

  373. salvation,

  374. of his grace,

  375. of his

  376. creating a family.

  377. We're gonna hear

  378. more about it

  379. later in this story.

  380. But what God

  381. has just said

  382. is what happens

  383. when God tells

  384. them it's time.

  385. Chapter 7,

  386. verse 7,

  387. Noah and his sons

  388. and his wife

  389. and his sons'

  390. wives with him

  391. went into the ark

  392. to escape the waters

  393. of the flood,

  394. of clean animals

  395. and of animals

  396. that are not clean

  397. and of birds

  398. and of everything

  399. that creeps on the ground.

  400. Two and two,

  401. male and female,

  402. went into the ark

  403. with Noah

  404. as God

  405. had commanded

  406. Noah.

  407. In this story,

  408. the famous

  409. vehicle

  410. for God's rescue,

  411. kids,

  412. what rescued

  413. Noah and his family?

  414. The ark,

  415. right?

  416. The dimensions

  417. of the ark

  418. are really

  419. mind-blowing.

  420. If I hadn't been

  421. to the replica

  422. in Kentucky

  423. myself,

  424. I wouldn't

  425. be able

  426. to imagine it.

  427. I recommend

  428. that visit,

  429. by the way.

  430. You'll be struck

  431. by just the

  432. grand scale

  433. of the whole thing.

  434. It'll give you

  435. a vision for

  436. where the animals

  437. could have fit

  438. and what it

  439. might have looked like.

  440. But I want to

  441. help you

  442. where you're

  443. sitting right now.

  444. You're in a big room

  445. with lots of people.

  446. The ark

  447. was a wooden boat,

  448. solid wooden boat,

  449. almost exactly

  450. as wide

  451. as this sanctuary

  452. from wall to windows,

  453. okay?

  454. All of this

  455. is ark.

  456. In fact,

  457. the top of the ark,

  458. can you look up

  459. at the ceiling?

  460. It's a ways up there.

  461. The top of the ark

  462. would have just

  463. broken through

  464. the ceiling,

  465. taller than this room.

  466. But this will get you.

  467. If I'm standing

  468. right here

  469. at the front of the ark,

  470. looking over the edge

  471. of the boat

  472. towards the rest of it,

  473. the ark was so big

  474. that you'd have to go

  475. out the back doors.

  476. It would stretch

  477. through the parking lot,

  478. across Carl T. Jones Drive,

  479. somewhere over there

  480. in the middle

  481. of the cow pasture

  482. would be the end

  483. of the ark.

  484. That's how big

  485. this boat is.

  486. See,

  487. God is providing

  488. a refuge

  489. refuge

  490. for Noah,

  491. right?

  492. To rescue him

  493. from the flood

  494. that is coming.

  495. He instructs Noah

  496. how to build the ark

  497. and he asks Noah

  498. to trust him.

  499. Why does Noah

  500. have to trust him?

  501. Well,

  502. because there didn't seem

  503. like a lot of need

  504. for a really big boat

  505. like that

  506. where Noah was.

  507. Wouldn't have made sense

  508. to anyone,

  509. I don't think.

  510. but with,

  511. I'm sure,

  512. limited understanding

  513. in his own heart,

  514. with plenty of mocking

  515. from his neighbors,

  516. Noah trusted

  517. and obeyed God.

  518. Maybe you can relate

  519. to how hard

  520. it can be

  521. to trust God

  522. when you don't understand.

  523. when life

  524. just doesn't

  525. make sense.

  526. When others

  527. mock you

  528. and say,

  529. you're really

  530. going to do it

  531. that way?

  532. It's so stupid.

  533. When you're tempted

  534. to trust your own

  535. instincts,

  536. they make more

  537. sense to you.

  538. Maybe God

  539. is saying to you

  540. again today,

  541. trust me.

  542. The safe place

  543. to live

  544. is following

  545. my directions.

  546. Trust me.

  547. So,

  548. God

  549. rescues

  550. eight people,

  551. Noah's family,

  552. in the ark.

  553. It's a good thing

  554. they got on board,

  555. the one safe

  556. place

  557. left,

  558. right?

  559. Only

  560. Noah

  561. was left

  562. and those

  563. who were with

  564. him

  565. in the ark.

  566. It's also

  567. an amazing

  568. picture of

  569. God's grace,

  570. isn't it?

  571. Even in the midst

  572. of all of that

  573. judgment,

  574. he's rescuing.

  575. There's so much

  576. judgment here,

  577. it's easy to think

  578. that this

  579. Yahweh is full

  580. of wrath

  581. and justice

  582. only.

  583. But no,

  584. this God

  585. is not an

  586. either-or

  587. deity

  588. of our

  589. imagination.

  590. That's the way

  591. some of us

  592. make him up.

  593. Some of us

  594. say,

  595. well,

  596. he's one way

  597. in the Old

  598. Testament,

  599. he's another

  600. way in the

  601. New Testament.

  602. No,

  603. he's not a

  604. different God.

  605. He is all

  606. the time

  607. full of grace

  608. and full

  609. of truth,

  610. right?

  611. Both.

  612. The world

  613. may be going

  614. to hell

  615. in a hand

  616. basket,

  617. but God

  618. is always

  619. looking

  620. to rescue.

  621. Like Lot

  622. escaping Sodom.

  623. Like the

  624. exiles

  625. returning

  626. with Nehemiah

  627. to God's

  628. city,

  629. God always

  630. rescues a

  631. remnant

  632. when he

  633. judges

  634. sin.

  635. 2 Peter

  636. says Noah

  637. is an

  638. example as

  639. well.

  640. God knows

  641. how to

  642. rescue

  643. his people

  644. when such

  645. destruction

  646. comes upon

  647. sin.

  648. Know that.

  649. Here it's

  650. eight people

  651. and pairs

  652. of animals

  653. reminding us

  654. this story

  655. is not

  656. merely about

  657. judgment,

  658. but even

  659. more poignantly,

  660. even more

  661. powerfully for

  662. us,

  663. it's about

  664. rescue in

  665. the midst

  666. of wrath.

  667. See,

  668. those who

  669. take refuge

  670. in the ark

  671. and survive

  672. the flood,

  673. they don't

  674. merely survive,

  675. they become

  676. a part of

  677. God's

  678. wonderful

  679. recreation.

  680. When Noah

  681. and his

  682. family get

  683. off the ark

  684. after the

  685. flood,

  686. we read

  687. this at

  688. chapter 8

  689. verse 20,

  690. then Noah

  691. built an

  692. altar to

  693. the Lord

  694. and took

  695. some of

  696. every clean

  697. animal and

  698. some of

  699. every clean

  700. bird and

  701. offered burnt

  702. offerings on

  703. the altar.

  704. There's a

  705. reason they

  706. had more.

  707. And when

  708. the Lord

  709. smelled the

  710. pleasing aroma,

  711. the Lord

  712. said in his

  713. heart,

  714. I will never

  715. again curse

  716. the ground

  717. because of

  718. man,

  719. for the

  720. intention of

  721. man's

  722. heart is

  723. evil from

  724. his youth,

  725. but neither

  726. will I ever

  727. again strike

  728. down every

  729. living creature

  730. as I have

  731. done.

  732. While the

  733. earth remains,

  734. seed time

  735. and harvest,

  736. cold and

  737. heat,

  738. summer and

  739. winter,

  740. day and

  741. night,

  742. shall not

  743. cease.

  744. God's

  745. world is

  746. going to

  747. continue.

  748. Sun and

  749. moon,

  750. plants and

  751. animals,

  752. seasons and

  753. centuries.

  754. And in

  755. case you're

  756. wondering about

  757. where you

  758. fit in,

  759. people I

  760. created,

  761. God says,

  762. flashback to

  763. Genesis 1,

  764. the Garden of

  765. Eden.

  766. We read it

  767. just a couple

  768. weeks ago.

  769. And God

  770. blessed

  771. Noah.

  772. You remember

  773. that?

  774. God

  775. blessed.

  776. He's

  777. starting fresh.

  778. What does

  779. He start

  780. with every

  781. time?

  782. Blessing.

  783. Blessing the

  784. way He

  785. engages.

  786. You're hearing

  787. the echoes

  788. of Genesis

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  789. chapter 1?

  790. Keep

  791. listening.

  792. Blessed

  793. Noah and

  794. his sons

  795. and said

  796. to them,

  797. be fruitful

  798. and multiply

  799. and fill

  800. the earth.

  801. There it is,

  802. fill.

  803. Fill it,

  804. it's what I

  805. created you

  806. to do.

  807. Shine my

  808. image everywhere

  809. so it's full

  810. of my glory.

  811. And also,

  812. rule.

  813. The fear of

  814. you and the

  815. dread of

  816. you shall be

  817. upon every

  818. beast of

  819. the earth

  820. and upon

  821. every bird

  822. of the heavens,

  823. upon everything

  824. that creeps

  825. on the ground

  826. and all the

  827. fish of the

  828. sea.

  829. Into your

  830. hand they

  831. are delivered.

  832. Every moving

  833. thing that

  834. lives shall

  835. be food

  836. for you.

  837. There's

  838. food provided

  839. again.

  840. As I gave

  841. you the green

  842. plants, I

  843. give you

  844. everything.

  845. Still in

  846. Genesis 1,

  847. look at

  848. verse 6 of

  849. chapter 9.

  850. Whoever sheds

  851. the blood

  852. of man,

  853. by man

  854. shall his

  855. blood be

  856. shed.

  857. For God

  858. made man

  859. in his

  860. own

  861. image.

  862. That highest

  863. of all

  864. blessings that

  865. were given,

  866. right?

  867. Made in

  868. the image

  869. of the

  870. one who

  871. made us.

  872. As we

  873. fill,

  874. you be

  875. fruitful and

  876. multiply,

  877. team on

  878. the earth

  879. and multiply

  880. in it.

  881. God is

  882. doing

  883. something new

  884. again,

  885. isn't he?

  886. There's

  887. a

  888. recreation

  889. and now

  890. here comes

  891. the covenant

  892. again.

  893. Relationship,

  894. remember?

  895. Relationship.

  896. What will

  897. Noah have

  898. to do

  899. to be

  900. good enough

  901. for God

  902. this time?

  903. That's not

  904. how this

  905. Yahweh

  906. works,

  907. is it?

  908. Listen to

  909. this one-sided

  910. covenant.

  911. God said to

  912. Noah and his

  913. sons with him,

  914. behold,

  915. I establish

  916. my covenant

  917. with you

  918. and your

  919. offspring

  920. after you

  921. and with

  922. every living

  923. creature that's

  924. with you,

  925. birds,

  926. livestock,

  927. every beast

  928. of the earth

  929. with you,

  930. as many as

  931. came out

  932. of the ark,

  933. it's for

  934. every beast

  935. of the earth.

  936. I establish

  937. my covenant

  938. with you

  939. that never

  940. again shall

  941. all flesh

  942. be cut off

  943. by the waters

  944. of the flood

  945. and never

  946. again shall

  947. there be a

  948. flood

  949. to destroy

  950. the earth.

  951. a covenant

  952. with all

  953. of creation.

  954. Beautiful.

  955. Established

  956. and upheld

  957. by whom?

  958. By the

  959. creator

  960. single-handedly.

  961. Seven times

  962. in this story

  963. we hear about

  964. the covenant

  965. that will

  966. carry the new

  967. creation forward

  968. in relationship

  969. with its

  970. creator.

  971. No matter

  972. what,

  973. no matter

  974. what they

  975. do,

  976. God will

  977. not destroy

  978. the earth

  979. like this

  980. again.

  981. Even though

  982. his judgment

  983. is real,

  984. he is making

  985. all things

  986. new and

  987. there's a

  988. new path

  989. going forward.

  990. Are you

  991. ever discouraged

  992. by the

  993. wickedness

  994. around you?

  995. Do you

  996. sometimes feel

  997. like,

  998. don't raise

  999. your hand,

  1000. America is

  1001. going to

  1002. hell in a

  1003. handbasket?

  1004. Do you

  1005. think God's

  1006. people receiving

  1007. this book

  1008. the first

  1009. time,

  1010. remembering

  1011. Egyptian

  1012. oppressors

  1013. for years

  1014. and years

  1015. and generations

  1016. witnessing

  1017. their own

  1018. selfishness

  1019. and idolatry,

  1020. disobedience

  1021. to God's

  1022. commands that

  1023. didn't make

  1024. sense to

  1025. them,

  1026. grumbling

  1027. against God's

  1028. leaders who

  1029. just seem to

  1030. be taking

  1031. them towards

  1032. more danger,

  1033. right?

  1034. You think

  1035. they might

  1036. have been

  1037. easily discouraged

  1038. at living

  1039. in a world

  1040. like this?

  1041. What's God's

  1042. message to

  1043. them and to

  1044. us then

  1045. through Noah's

  1046. story?

  1047. Isn't it

  1048. God saying,

  1049. trust me,

  1050. follow me

  1051. because I'm

  1052. restoring this

  1053. world in the

  1054. midst of sinful

  1055. rescued people.

  1056. All the time

  1057. that's what he's

  1058. doing.

  1059. Noah blows it

  1060. big time in the

  1061. next story.

  1062. But God is

  1063. committed to

  1064. remaking things

  1065. the way he

  1066. wants them.

  1067. I don't know

  1068. if you're blowing

  1069. it big time right

  1070. now or if you

  1071. think you never

  1072. have.

  1073. But you might

  1074. look around you

  1075. and think

  1076. somebody's blowing

  1077. it big time.

  1078. Everything's out

  1079. of control.

  1080. There is no

  1081. hope and God

  1082. says that's

  1083. exactly where I

  1084. show.

  1085. Those are the

  1086. kinds of people

  1087. I use.

  1088. I rescue them

  1089. and I recreate

  1090. with them.

  1091. How do you

  1092. know that that's

  1093. what God's doing?

  1094. Kids, how do we

  1095. remember that God

  1096. keeps his

  1097. promises?

  1098. What does God

  1099. give us in the

  1100. sky?

  1101. It's the

  1102. rainbow, right?

  1103. Verse 13.

  1104. I have set my

  1105. bow in the

  1106. cloud, God

  1107. says, and it

  1108. shall be a sign

  1109. of the covenant

  1110. between me and

  1111. the earth.

  1112. When I bring

  1113. clouds over the

  1114. earth and the

  1115. bow is seen in

  1116. the clouds, I

  1117. will remember my

  1118. covenant that is

  1119. between me and

  1120. you and every

  1121. living creature of

  1122. all flesh.

  1123. And the waters

  1124. shall never again

  1125. become a flood to

  1126. destroy all flesh.

  1127. when the bow is

  1128. in the clouds, I

  1129. will see it and

  1130. remember the

  1131. everlasting covenant

  1132. between God and

  1133. every living creature

1134. of all flesh that is

  1135. on the earth.

  1136. Don't you love that

1137. the bow is in the

  1138. clouds?

  1139. The darkness still

  1140. lingering from the

  1141. storm of God's

  1142. judgment that has

  1143. come.

  1144. And the word

  1145. for rainbow, the

  1146. reason we read

  1147. bow here, it's the

1148. same word as for a

  1149. war bow that you

  1150. would use to, you

  1151. know, shoot an

  1152. arrow.

  1153. God, see, is

  1154. hanging up his

  1155. bow, isn't he?

  1156. He's not coming to

  1157. attack his creation,

  1158. rather he's coming to

  1159. restore his

  1160. creation.

  1161. Kids, I told you

  1162. when you see a

  1163. rainbow, I want you

  1164. to remember what?

  1165. God keeps his

  1166. promises.

  1167. You want to know

  1168. something really cool

  1169. about that, kids?

  1170. It's not just there

  1171. when you see the

  1172. rainbow, it's not

  1173. just that you're

  1174. supposed to remember

  1175. that God keeps his

  1176. promises.

  1177. You know who else

  1178. sees a rainbow and

  1179. remembers that God

  1180. keeps his promises?

  1181. God does.

  1182. Look at this.

  1183. I will see it.

  1184. I will remember the

  1185. everlasting covenant,

  1186. God says.

  1187. That means a

  1188. covenant that's still

  1189. going on today.

  1190. God still sees the

  1191. rainbow and he still

  1192. remembers his

  1193. commitment to you.

  1194. When you see a

  1195. rainbow, you can also

  1196. remember God

  1197. remembers.

  1198. And when God

  1199. remembers, what does

  1200. he do?

  1201. He acts to rescue,

  1202. remember?

  1203. Remember?

  1204. So you, you who

  1205. survived the flood

  1206. have a purpose then,

  1207. don't you?

  1208. Don't lose sight of

  1209. being an image bearer

  1210. blessed to live in

  1211. relationship with the

  1212. creator because he's

  1213. still rescuing, he's

  1214. still recreating, he's

  1215. still restoring and he's

1216. calling you to fill the

1217. earth with his glory as

1218. he restores you so that

  1219. his glory shines

  1220. everywhere.

1221. The reason you exist is

  1222. relationship.

  1223. It's a relationship he

  1224. remembers to restore.

  1225. He promises.

  1226. Don't lose sight of God's

  1227. promise.

1228. You, even you, even me

  1229. can be rescued from

  1230. wrath, can be repurposed

  1231. for restoration in

  1232. relationship with him.

1233. But to be part of that,

1234. you must be in the ark

  1235. to survive the flood.

  1236. This may be patently

1237. obvious as you read the

1238. story, but those who are

1239. a part of the recreation

1240. in chapter 9 have all

  1241. been in the ark

  1242. through the flood.

  1243. Friends, please, please

  1244. don't miss this, okay?

  1245. Simple reality, but really

  1246. important for us.

1247. Don't miss what this is

  1248. telling us.

  1249. There is another flood

  1250. coming.

  1251. When the heavens will

1252. open and the justice and

1253. wrath of God will be poured

  1254. out on sin.

1255. A day, the Bible says, of

  1256. terror and destruction, of

  1257. weeping and wailing.

1258. Big sinners on the news and

  1259. in prison and everyday

  1260. day sinners with selfish

  1261. desires and evil thoughts,

1262. both types going to hell

  1263. in a handbasket.

1264. And this is the only

  1265. warning we get.

1266. Jesus says this flood will

1267. come on a day when we are

  1268. eating and drinking,

  1269. getting married,

  1270. going to work.

1271. So many of us pursuing our

  1272. normal lives, going to

  1273. school, spending money,

1274. scrolling on our phones to

1275. see if there's anything of

1276. significance going on in the

  1277. world.

  1278. Just living for ourselves,

1279. and we won't know it,

  1280. but there's another flood

  1281. coming.

1282. And another ark has been

  1283. built.

  1284. Dear people, please, please

  1285. listen.

  1286. Don't laugh.

  1287. Don't mock this.

1288. Don't ignore it because you

1289. live in a world where it

1290. doesn't seem like you need

  1291. rescuing.

  1292. There is another flood

  1293. coming.

1294. There is another ark that

  1295. has been built.

1296. And you don't have to build

1297. it, but you must come

  1298. aboard.

  1299. You must.

1300. See, there was another day

1301. in God's story when His

  1302. judgment broke into temporal

1303. history and was poured out

  1304. against sin without restraint

1305. on a man hanging on a cross.

1306. for people who mocked the one

  1307. obeying God.

1308. For them, the nails were

1309. driven into His hands and

  1310. into His feet.

1311. For people who just live for

1312. their own comfort, the crown

  1313. of thorns was excruciatingly

  1314. pressed into His head.

1315. For people who are big, evil

  1316. murderers and idolaters and

  1317. everyday normal covetors and

1318. selfish people, God poured out

1319. His wrath and His curse while

1320. turning away His face of love

  1321. and blessing.

1322. Jesus suffered so that when the

1323. flood of God's wrath comes

1324. against sin, people like us

1325. deserving to be destroyed and

1326. wiped out can be safe in the

  1327. ark in Jesus.

1328. Jesus, that's why He hung there.

1329. Remember, when God judges sin, He

  1330. always rescues a remnant.

1331. And if this little ark right

1332. here is only a small model of

1333. that really huge ark, then Noah's

1334. really huge ark that goes across

1335. the street is only a small model of

1336. the ark of Christ in whom we're

  1337. safe from the flood.

1338. The ark of Christ in whom there is

1339. room for our friends and our

1340. neighbors and people from every

1341. tribe and tongue and nation, no

1342. matter how big of sinners they may

  1343. be.

1344. The ark of Christ in whom on the

1345. darkest nights, in the strongest

1346. storms, there shines a bow pointed

1347. at heaven where God takes the arrow

1348. for sinners, where God suffers to

1349. rescue us, to bring us back into

1350. relationship with Him, to welcome

1351. us into His new creation.

1352. Friends, flee the wrath to come.

1353. It is real and we have been warned

1354. and run to the ark of Jesus.

1355. Only Noah and those in the ark were

1356. left and friends, everyone in the ark

  1357. is safe.

1358. Trust the promises of God and the God

1359. of the promises who still hangs

1360. rainbows in the clouds so that we

1361. remember that He remembers us.

  1362. Let's pray.

1363. Father, how good you are to remind us.

1364. But more importantly, how amazingly

1365. gracious you are to remember us.

  1366. Thank you.

1367. Thank you for the call today that we

1368. can turn from our sin and run to

1369. Jesus and there's safety for us.

1370. Father, would no one in the sound of

1371. my voice be left outside that ark?

1372. Might you so work, Holy Spirit, that

1373. though we see our sin bigger and bigger

1374. this morning, we see a Savior who's

1375. more than enough, whose mercy is more,

1376. and whose love will never let us go.

1377. Work in us for the sake of eternity

1378. and for today, we ask in Jesus' name.

  1379. Amen.
